Welcome

October & November

The Coast is not just about obtaining the home of your dreams, but the lifestyle that follows it. With this in mind, over the coming months, HOME and LIFESTYLE Magazine will be expanding its range of content. We will be offering you more... more articles, more info, more inspiration to help you to get involved with the people, places and events that breathe life into the Costa del Sol. Whether that’s volunteering time at a local charity, trying out a new menu at a local restaurant, visiting an art exhibit, shopping at a local boutique or planning a vacation, you’ll find a myriad of suggestions about the vast opportunities available in this place we’ve all chosen to call home. To start the ball rolling (pardon the pun) in this issue, we have introduced a new section on Fitness, Leisure and Golf and have created our own golf society “4PlayGolf” for our readers and advertisers (turn to page 68 for more info). Our aim is to provide even more content across extra pages and print even more editions of what is fast becoming one of the most widely enjoyed Home and Lifestyle magazines on the Costa del Sol. Talking of change … the temperatures have cooled and the festive season is fast approaching. This issue inspires you to add warmth to our notoriously cold Spanish homes

during the late Autumn and Winter seasons. Rugs, colours, textures, fabrics, flooring options and contemporary fireplaces can make your home warm and cosy every evening during the coming months — more on these decor improvements inside. We also have our regular competitions for our readers — a Skin Brightening Facial and Dinner for Two. Also, make a note in your diary for the Perfect Wedding Expo in Fuengirola on the 14th and 15th of November. It promises to be a spectacular and unmissable event. Even if you don’t have any plans to tie the knot, it’ll be well worth a visit. Enjoy yourself and get inspired.

The Motley III Collection by Samuel Chan for Channels British design firm Channels launched its latest collection of furniture and lighting — Motley III — at 100% Design in London on September 24th27th. The series explores new geometric and organic forms and reflects Samuel’s signature purist style. Inherent in his approach is an ability to understand the ongoing potential of wood in new design. The designs demand the most exacting hand-finished craft while introducing new manufacturing processes — so giving this most traditional of materials a strong contemporary expression. www.channelsdesign.com

BoConcept launches its 2010 collection across the globe September was a big month for BoConcept, not just in Spain but across the world, as the leading international Danish furniture manufacturer officially unveiled its brand new collection for 2010. BoConcept is the brand name of Denmark’s most global retail furniture chain with more than 220 brand stores and 120 studios in 45 countries. To celebrate the launch of the new inspirational catalogue, dedicated to urban design, BoConcept threw the longest worldwide release party in all BoConcept stores across the globe — and the new collection has been very well received to say the least. The Mijas BoConcept store in the province of Málaga hosted their regional launch event on Thursday 18th April which was attended by over 100 clients and media professionals. With no expense spared, guests were treated to a mouth-watering Danish breakfast, delicious Spanish tapas and celebratory drinks in between and during the new catalogue presentation. With the eagerly anticipated arrival of BoConcept’s new 2010 urban design range, everyone will be surprised and excited to see a big splash of colour prevailing throughout. Famous for their line of contemporary urban furniture, the new 2010 range aims to inspire everyone — whether you prefer neutral tones or more daring vibrant colours. The furniture pieces in the new collection are full of modern aesthetics which become prominent and eye-catching when placed in the right home. BoConcept has also incorporated a fair amount of soft, comfortable, high quality leather furniture in its new range, to appeal to almost everyone who enjoys luxury living at affordable prices. The classic colours like black, white and different tones of brown are still found in the 2010 BoConcept collection, but it’s also possible to spice up your upholstery with deep indigo blue, warm mocha, mustard yellow and raspberry pink colour schemes. The new 2010 collection is sure to go down a storm across the globe. To find your nearest BoConcept store or to browse the latest catalogue online, please visit www.boconcept.es

Goldon Glass Sally Morgan’s designs in gold or metal leaf are applied to sheet glass which is then mounted with fittings that hold the piece 1.5 cm off the wall. A unique feature of these pieces is that you can see the wall colour clearly through the glass and the shadow cast by the design onto the wall. You get the overall impression that the gold design is floating on the wall. Just about anything you can imagine can be reproduced in this way, including portraits. Your Design – Your Style Today, style is perhaps an even more highly complex concept than ever. An indefinable thing which is above all personal and individual. Style is an overall look which expresses the personality of the individual, right down to her finger ring. The Danish jewellery company Spinning Jewelry has created a unique concept, giving girls and women who don’t want to compromise their personal style the opportunity to emphasise and support it with one-off jewellery. With Spinning Jewelry, they can design and re-design rings, necklaces, bracelets and

earrings according to the latest trends and to suit their mood, personality or special occasion. Quality and durability are key values for the Danish jewellery manufacturer, therefore chief designer Lina Mørk always personally supervises and approves the trial production before actual production is initiated. As a starting point, all jewellery is made of genuine sterling silver or 8/9 carat gold with added details of either precious stones, pearls or 14 carat gold. Every day, Spinning Jewelry experiments with new surfaces, colours and shapes. Twice a year the collection is supplemented with new designs. Today, Spinning Jewelry consists of more than 100 unique rings, over 90 different pendants for necklaces and bracelets (and even more for earrings) which can all be combined in countless ways.

X-Series Barbeque by Porsche Design Studio Porsche owners have long reveled in their ability to smoke the competition on track and street, but now Porsche lovers can also leave their marque’s mark on the backside of burgers, hotdogs and ribeyes. Grill marks, of course. Barbeques Galore and Porsche Design Studio have burned the midnight oil for two years while working on the the new X-Series Grill. Under its sleek, German-styled exterior lies some fairly hot grilling technology. Fitted with infra-red ceramic burners and utilising ‘Crossway’ technology — using up to 50 percent less gas and emitting 80 percent less smoke than your average barbeque — heck, the Porsche Design Studio X-Series BBQ practically pays for itself in environmental kudos points. Like a high-performance vehicle, it’s what’s under the hood that counts, so here are some of the features: • Temperature gauge • Secondary cooking rack • Stainless steel firebox • Insulated double walled hood • Black stone side shelves • 4 porcelain coated cast-iron cooking grids • 1,120 total square inches of cooking surface • LCD display with remote probe • LED lights indicating burners in operation • Rechargeable battery pack for electrics. Also included is the right to brag to your friends that you have a Porsche on your patio. The 1st English Speaking Wedding Exhibition FUENGIROLA, PALACIO DE LA PAZ Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November 2009

The Perfect Wedding Expo will be the very first Wedding Exhibition for English Speaking residents and visitors to be held in Fuengirola. Whether you’re making wedding plans, thinking of renewing your wedding vows, or maybe just looking for evening or cocktail wear, a visit to the exhibition is a must. Seventy exhibitors will be showcasing their products and services, from hair to makeup, flowers, photography, venues, lingerie, Harley Davidson and classic cars, plus much much more. For this first year I have chosen a celtic-theme from Anglo-Saxon Britain. The question many people ask is: Why? The inspiration comes from a British action/adventure television series called “Arthur of the Britons” starring Oliver Tobias in the lead role. I was about nine years old when this was being shown and it had such an impact on me that I began to develop a deep interest in celtic culture. This exhibition for English speaking visitors includes a high number of Scandinavians, so I thought it would be a good idea to use this celtic theme as the perfect opportunity to highlight the Scandinavian culture, encompassing vikings, saxons and jutes. We are bringing this together on the big theatre stage to give the exhibition an extra accent. In Britain both cultures ended up mixing together well, just as we do here, so I though the theme would be a good idea. The TV series “Arthur of the Britons” came up with one important rule — if all the celtic tribes united they would be a much stronger force against the invasion. I have tried to apply this rule to the exhibition. If all the companies who have a connection with weddings and wedding ceremonies are united together we will be a strong and creative force to create a fantastic wedding event that will be the social event of the year; an event which everyone will want to visit, meeting together to enjoy and share a good time. So I invite you all to come and visit us at this non-profit making event. And remember, we are supporting the following charities — Cuedeca and Positively Pink. Wendy

Let me Entertain You

Wedding Expo runway shows? Well, we’ve all seen them before, haven’t we? A battalion of Bambi-eyed goddesses gliding down the runway in an explosion of luciouslydraped satin and tulle ! Been there, done that, bought the corsage! Well not this time! While our stage WILL of course swish to the sound of couture gowns caressing the catwalk, we’re also planning something quite different (and altogether more spectacular) for the choreographed part of our first English-speaking Costa Wedding Expo. In short we’re going to ENTERTAIN you! Firstly, with a full rolling programme of live performers and musicians. From Classical Divas (and ‘DIVOS’!) to Big Band crooners and a jaw-dropping U2 tribute act that’ll convince you Bono’s gone AWOL!!!! A heady brew of talent indeed. You’re sure to find something among them to add that final sprinkling of Fairy Dust, Romance or Sass to your very special day. But there’s more. Thanks to the fevered imagination of our MC/Staging Director Jim McNulty (self-styled SINGER-DANCER-ACTOR-MANIAC!) the performance part of our show will ‘climax’ (there! That naughty word!) in a full-on ‘Riverdance’ meets ‘Romeo & Juliet’ theatrical spectacular. There’ll be butch boys brandishing sparkly shields and a fey Celtic Princess looking for love… Even your ‘you-won’t-get-me-ata-poncy-wedding-show’ macho other half might just find himself having a good time! Well we hope that’s got you salivating in the aisles! But really, please stop! That’s not a good look for you! Anyway, look forward to seeing you there! OCTOBER & NOVEMBER 2009 15

P erfect W edding expo

WELCOME TO THE EXHIBITION From Fuengirola Mayoress Esperanza Oña It is with great pleasure that Fuengirola will be hosting the “Perfect Wedding Expo” on the 14th and 15th of November. There is no better setting than Fuengirola to host a multicultural event of this kind. Although the city is one of Spain’s smallest municipalities it has always had big ideas, especially as a self-styled “cultural capital” of the Costa del Sol; a city which is a key element in Spain’s residential tourism and a destination known worldwide for its popularity among tourists. From the town hall, we would like to express our appreciation to the organisers of the “Perfect Wedding Expo” for choosing Fuengirola as a focal point for two days, in bringing together multi cultural companies that can make your wedding the “Perfect Day”.

Costa del Sol HOME and LIFESTYLE Magazine speaks to Fuengirola Mayoress, Esperanza Oña, on the Town Hall’s support for the “Perfect Wedding Expo’’ and on choosing the Costa del Sol and Fuengirola as the perfect venue for your special wedding day. How is the City of Fuengirola supporting the “Perfect Wedding Expo”? The City of Fuengirola has always supported such initiatives that make the city more attractive and complement our important tourism and trade. From the outset we wanted to help the exhibition achieve its goal to raise funds for the non-profit charities “Positively Pink” and “Cuedeca”. These charities make life easier for people sick with cancer and their families. As Mayoress you can always count on my support to fight this serious disease, so we offered the organisers of the event the facilities of the Palacio de la Paz for the “Perfect Wedding Expo” and news coverage.

Message from Suvi Kauranen, Councillor of Foreign Residents Fuengirola is a multicultural city, home to more than 120 nationalities. The Town Hall tries to offer foreign residents as well as tourists, diverse activities. This is why we are so glad to be participating in the organisation of the “Perfect Wedding Expo”.

16 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

In your opinion, what makes the Costa del Sol the ideal place for a wedding? In my opinion, Fuengirola is the best place for any couple who want to celebrate their wedding in a unique setting. In our city you can enjoy a wonderful climate all year round and landmarks which can help immortalise such an important moment in anyone’s life. Sohail Castle, stronghold of the eleventh century, is the symbol of the city and one of the most popular venues for the ceremony; an exceptional setting with 60,000 square meters of green areas. It is certainly the ideal place for the union of many couples. Do you have any advice for couples who want to celebrate their perfect wedding in Fuengirola? I would advise making use of the enormous range of related businesses and high quality services that Fuengirola has to offer. Our city can provide advice in all business sectors, whether hostelry, fashion, flower shop, service, photography, printing, etc. The perfect wedding can be celebrated

Message from José Vallejo, Councillor of Youth Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Exhibition organiser, Wendy, a professional in the industry and a person with an extraordinary heart. Since March 2009, she has been pouring talent and enthusiasm into the organisation of the event, which will ensure its success. Secondly, in addition to supporting the event as Councillor of Youth, I am also donating my time and image as a male model for the exhibition as it supports two local charities — Positively Pink and Cuedeca. This is a time for people to come together in support as well as enjoying an incredible Wedding Expo. Thank you for all your support.

without having to move from the city. What do you hope the “Perfect Wedding Expo” will bring to the city of Fuengirola? First of all I wish the Organisers of the “Perfect Wedding Expo” much success, because we must not forget that this is an event with a good cause. Moreover, I hope that many of the individuals or couples who come to see what the exhibition has to offer take an interest in our city as a place to celebrate their union in marriage. I’m sure it will be an enriching event for Fuengirola. Do you foresee that more exhibitions of this kind will be held in the Palacio de la Paz? I’m sure. Not only exhibitions of this kind, but of many other sectors. A few weeks ago the palace hosted an international medical meeting with over 400 professionals in attendance. Fuengirola is a city where everything has a place and where the fuengiroleños offer hospitality. The quality of life they enjoy makes visitors want to return year after year, so I expect them to repeat this magnificent “Perfect Wedding Expo”.

Message from José Sánchez Diaz, Councillor of Tourism and Commerce I am very happy to be supporting this this event as it promotes Fuengirola and the Costa del Sol as an ideal place to get married and celebrate your honeymoon. The event is very important to Fuengirola’s and the Costa del Sol’s commerce, especially in this time of recession. The Fuengirola town hall will be supplying tourist information for visitors to the exhibition and therefore have a special role in the “Perfect Wedding Expo” and promoting the Costa del Sol.

Punches of lime-green in the glass pendants, counter stools and a luminous fibre optic onyx sculpture accent the kitchen.

Overlooking Calpe Port, this Costa Blanca home was a blank canvas waiting to be painted. It began as a modest request. Impressed with the redesign of his offices in the heart of Calpe, owner Michael Page asked his designer and artictect, an admirer of Italian architect Paolo Soleri, to take a look at his home in the hills of Calpe. “I want a ‘wow’ around every corner,” Michael told his architect. While the original footprint of the house remains, all else was altered beginning with the front elevation. The rich red hue draws attention away from the garage and presents a focal point at the entrance. Bringing the colour indoors, the hallway is accentuated with a punch of red, three square windows and a modern floor lamp made of treated crushed-silk that capture the shapes and shades of coral reefs. A red faux-leather fireplace wall distinguishes the main living area. “Touch is a vital part of good design, people need to be drawn to it.” explained the architect. Here, curved lines of the tan leather sofa lend a horizontal reference to the dramatic spiral staircase. Substantially widened and turned in a more suitable direction, the stairs appear to float. A handrail wrapped in red leather and the use of Brazilian Ipei wood add texture. “You don’t realise it until you touch it,” Michael says. “The staircase is truly a work of art.” The architect integrated another unexpected visual and tactile element with an onyx sculptural form in the kitchen. Sliced and stacked ribbons of onyx create a resplendent fiber optic sculpture that establishes an interplay of wood, steel and stone. He chose African Wenge wood for the custom-milled cabinetry and poured concrete for the countertops — sealed and finished to a polished sheen. Colour is introduced in the media room, where a custom designed area rug in signature shades of red, green and brown centers an oversized tan leather sofa in front of the media wall. Texture is layered in with a pair of bamboo floor vases, while woven barrel chairs mirror an 22 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

underlying circular theme. Generous proportions in the master bedroom accommodate the custom-designed bed and cabinetry. Wide-plank wood flooring adds texture and depth to the space, while chenille bedding, suede pillows in muted reds and greens and a tan faux-suede headboard bring the home’s natural elements together. To soften the space, copper-coloured sheers hang gracefully behind the bed. Honed Turkish limestone floors throughout extend seamlessly to the pool’s raised exotic Ipei wood deck. A contemporary touch is created on the upper deck with a modern sail design for the awnings. The owner went with a more interesting railing angle and a unique design for the canvas that lends a sense of place on the coast. Here, a tradition began. “I climb to the upper deck and view the coastline,” Michael says. “Then I make my way down to the lower deck and cannonball into the pool,” he says with a laugh. “It’s just one of those things I always said I would do if I got my dream home.” H&L 24 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

TIPS FOR SURVIVING A MAJOR RENOVATION • You need planning permission and a building licence (licencia de obra) from your local town hall. There are two types of building licence: one for major works (obra mayor) and another for minor works (obra menor), depending on the nature and size of the intended construction. • Move out of the house while renovations are underway. You won’t have to panic when the roof is being ripped off and bulldozers destroy the outdoor area. • Assign only one person to communicate with consultants, general contractor and trades; or hire a ‘clerk of works’ such as an architectural engineer (aparejador) to oversee a large job . • Ask your architect to prepare a Master Plan, and include all the work you want to complete, even if you intend to do it in phases. Then, order all goods while available. This will allow you to get what you want while the

product is available and prevent delays, lastminute panics, and compromises. • Budget for everything in advance, in addition to the construction, including design and engineering fees, landscaping, lighting, furniture, area rugs, accesories, artwork, dishes, linens, etc. Prioritising between your wants and your needs will allow the end product to be consistent. • Make sure that a quotation includes everything you want done and that you fully understand it. You should fix a date for the start and completion of work, and if you can get a builder to agree to it, include a penalty for failing to finish on time. After signing a contract it’s usual to pay a deposit, the amount of which depends on the size and cost of the job. • Be consistent in your communications. If you say your budget is 400,000 Euros stick to it, or no one will respect your budget guidelines. H&L

30 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

Since dedicated bathrooms started to become more widespread around a century ago, the space has been constantly evolving along with trends, innovations, and lifestyles — and what began as a functional area used primarily used for quick morning ablutions has transformed into a place where hours can be happily spent, relaxing away the stresses and strains of life in the 21st century. In part, the most recent element of this trend can be attributed to the influence of health club culture, and the increase in popularity of boutique hotel accommodation — and of course to the pace of our modern hectic schedules. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits that a spa-like bathroom can offer them, by recreating the look and feel of exclusive resort bathrooms in their own home. In line with this sort of thinking, more and more domestic bathrooms now come equipped with the sort of facilities you might expect to find in an exclusive resort — with all sorts of innovative products now available, such as steam cabins, saunas, and chromatherapy showers. And this influence is even making us consider our bathoom’s decor in a completely different light. When seen as a space of wellbeing, the bathroom takes on greater significance in the living area and enhances people’s quality of life, as well as in shaping architectural spaces. With a shift in thinking about what a bathroom ‘means’ comes a new approach to design and layout that’s influenced by other parts of the home — we’re now seeing a raft of cabinetry designs styled on furniture pieces. The addition of chaise lounges or comfy chairs, a contemporary fire place and the inclusion of AV equipment (such as TVs built into shower cubicles or wall-hung cabinets) make on-trend bathrooms places where you really want to linger longer. It’s not just in the entertainment field that technological innovations

are effecting change, either. Thanks to advances in plumbing, fixtures can now come straight out of the wall, allowing greater freedom in furnishing choices. For example, there’s no longer a need to opt for a cabinet to hide the pipework below a bowl-shaped basin, so you can pick a simpler plinth design. With such previous constraints diminishing, designers have more freedom, and bathroom fittings are now almost entering the realm of art. Lighting options are also now far more flexible than the old conventions dictated, thanks to fibre optics and LEDs. Chromatherapy is very fashionable, and it can really make an impact on your sense of wellbeing. Just as sunlight brightens your day, the colours of the light spectrum will work on your frame of mind. Red will stimulate the metabolism, purify and help clear the upper respiratory system, while blue will calm and cool. Green creates harmony, relaxes and is restorative; while orange or yellow are warming, appetite-stimulating and vitalising. Another notable development is the rise of the bathroom designed for sharing — while modest bathers still may prefer privacy when it comes to some of the, ahem, more basic daily rituals, quite frankly it can sometimes get a bit lonely soaking in the tub for hours (unless shutting the door on the world is your intenA warm and romantic sanctuary tion). Recognising that some couples wish to enjoy a sociable spa exwith many exciting details. The perience at home, manufacturers such as Kohler, Jacuzzi and Teuco square drawers with their “antique” knobs are completely produce tubs suitable for bathing à deux, while it’s also now possible surrounded by the light ash to find enclosures sizeable enough for two — or you could simply worktop which continues all the double up on fixtures for side-by-side showering. way down to the floor. As both the design of our homes and evolution of our lifestyles can be somewhat co-dependent, who knows where this trend might lead? While weight-

HomeDesign > lifting and yoga activities already take place in some bathrooms, sitting rooms are often taken over by games-console fitness sports and TV watch-along-workouts. Then there is the ‘home office’ residing in many a living room corner. Who knows whether, as electrics get more sophisticated and safer for use in ‘wet areas’, the ‘bathroom’ as we know it will become obsolete and we’ll be playing Nintendo Wii aqua-aerobics and surfing the internet from the comfort of our very own water lounge. One thing that won’t disappear though is that oft-cited bathroom complaint: “Will you please hurry up in there?” H&L

This roomy bathroom with its wide tub, walk-in shower, long mirror and sink unit offers more than enough space for two. The hard wall and floor surfaces are made more welcoming with finishing touches such as flowers, candles and piles of plush towels.

Bathroom and Kitchen Tips SYMMETRY SUCCESS Consider symmetry to be fundamental to any design. Make sure you have a focal point in which to achieve harmony and balance within your kitchen or bathroom. MAKE IT SPARKLE

Bring the opulence of a luxury spa to your home, a sauna and infrared cabin with chromatherapy and aromatherapy will fit effortlessly into most larger bathrooms. The coordinating range of furniture matches its sleek lines, featuring slide-in glass shelves and integrated lighting.

Inject a little glamour into your interiors wherever you can. Create features with decorative tiles or artistic objects and leave the rest of the areas relatively plain and clear. For example, try using a large gilt mirror over a basin as an alternative to a plain mirror. LIGHTING FLEXIBILITY General lighting is great for functional activities, but having an atmospheric scheme can transform a bathroom into a haven of relaxation or a kitchen into an ambient eating and entertaining area. Ensure your light fixtures have adjustable settings for different moods, and that you have good task lighting where you need it. CONTAIN THE CLUTTER Understand what storage you may need before you plan and design your room. Allow enough for additional and future requirements too — you always need more than you think you will! Accumulation of bottles and containers can quickly create unnecessary clutter and detract from your scheme.

The bathroom demonstrates refined bathing at its finest. Even if not ostensibly, the pieces take inspiration from the shape of the circle, using sculptural asymmetry to dramatic effect. The slanted form of the range takes essentially bulky ceramic units and streamlines them to create a feeling of light and space

EMBRACE THE ENTERTAINMENT AGE Consider what media requirements you are looking for in the bathroom or kitchen. There are so many products and companies able to accommodate your wishes, be it watching TV in the bath, relaxing to your favourite music or ordering your next grocery shop from the fridge!

Heating Up Home Décor

Once the mainstay of a traditional living room, fireplaces and heating stoves are appearing in every room of the home, including the bathroom. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t want a fireplace somewhere in their home. Talk to architects, designers, manufacturers and homeowners and you’ll find that fireplaces can be found in the living room, dining room, kitchen, family room and bathroom. And, a gas fireplace or stove will heat-up and add ambiance to any master bedroom suite. Just recently, architects and designers have started to create home designs with sitting rooms that have fireplaces that adjoin other rooms. And let’s not forget the great outdoors where many homeowners are enjoying a longer outdoor living season thanks to their outdoor fireplace. Driving the “outside the living room” thinking are the multitude of magazines, books and home makeover television shows that are devoted to home décor. And manufacturers have responded by offering a fireplace that is easily installed in any

room of the house. While a hearth product can add scale, colour and personality to a room, before purchasing a new fireplace for your existing home or designing one into your new home plans, take time to consider fuel and whether or not the hearth product is to provide heat, ambiance or both. Consider your lifestyle and local restrictions when choosing between wood or gas fuelled appliances. Wood, a renewable fuel, requires more work to haul inside and a commitment to stay with the fire until it burns out, while gas can be easily turned on and off with a switch. Either way, hearth appliances are becoming a popular secondary source of heat to warm specific rooms or areas in a home while turning down the central furnace. With the fuel now considered, it’s time to select a room or rooms. A raised fireplace in the kitchen, even one that doubles as an oven or bread warmer, adds ambiance. A well placed stove will warm a game room and just about any fireplace will look great in a great room. And, placed just so, a portrait-sized fireplace installed at eye level is a work of art on any wall. Many new hearth products are almost wall art. Exaggerated shapes and new media being used in gas units are very eye-catching. Considered wall art, these new hearth products can go anywhere that you would hang a painting. No matter what the location — upstairs, downstairs, indoors and out — there’s a hearth appliance to add warmth, charm and a soothing glow to any room of the house. H&L

COLOUR

Colour is one of the most exciting, rewarding and inexpensive things that can easily create a complete transformation of any room. Yet what excites professionals often overwhelms the rest of us, particularly colour. The possibilities it offers are almost infinite.

CHOOSING COLOUR Colour and Mood

Light is the most important thing to consider when choosing a paint colour for a scheme. Start by taking into account which way the room faces as this will have a significant impact on the appearance of colour; northern light, for example, will make colours look greener while southern, sunny light will make everything look more yellow. In rooms that run from east to west, the colour will change during the day as the sun moves around the room. The effect of light on col-

ours should be embraced rather than feared — this is what makes them come alive, adding depth to a scheme. However, it is also the reason why it’s vital that you try samples of colours in your home rather than simply choosing them off a chart. Remember to take into account not only the natural light in a room but also how you intend to light it artificially. Bear in mind that modern downlighters tend to bleach out a lot of colour, so in these circumstances it’s advisable to consider a slightly darker tone than you might have been drawn to initially. If you are decorating a room that’s often lit with candles, opt for very velvety colours or silvery colours, which will perform best in low and irregular light to give you an intimate and romantic feel.

Colour and Mood The shade you choose won’t just affect the appearance of an interior but also the way that it feels. If you want a room to feel very formal then it’s best to select cool colours such as blues and greys, but if you want a room to be relaxing and cosy you’re better off with warm reds and yellows. The aim of choosing colours for a scheme is to find

< SIMPLY WHITE From urban chic to rustic simplicity, white offers infinite possibilities. In its purest form it can be almost blindingly stark in bright sunlight. It also tends to take on a variety of appearances at different times of day. However, with the addition of almost imperceptible quantities of other colours, it can assume a completely new personality. White’s most important function, however, is its capacity to reflect light, making walls appear to recede and rooms feel larger.

Everyone loves neutrals – they create a calm feel and mix effortlessly with other colours. Yet creating a successful scheme isn’t as simple as it looks. The secret lies in a layered feel with paints and textured fabrics in a variety of tones. Because different neutrals create different looks experimentation is essential; those with a touch of yellow create a rustic look, while those with a hint of lilac lends them to a clean, urban feel.

Neutrals When faced with a large palette of colours to choose from it is often useful to first establish which neutrals will work best in your room scheme. Remember, however, that these may need to be adjusted to work depending on dif-

fering light conditions. Most neutrals can be divided into the following groups: Grey warm base — This group has a very sophisticated feel — they are very traditional colours but work well in contemporary situations too and create the feeling of a Parisian apartment. Yellow base — These colours have a pretty country feel that’s easy to live with. Red base — Use these shades to create a warm, modern and extremely relaxing feel -

can be described as a “taupe dream”. Grey cool base — With a firmly urban contemporary feel, this group has an underlying warm lilac tone.

Strong Colours If you are using one colour you can often afford to use darker tones. There’ll be no contrasts (except for the ceiling) so the colour won’t appear so strong. This particularly applies in small spaces with very little or no natural light. If you have a small, dark room and you paint it white, you will end up with a

DARK & MOODY It’s tempting to think that bright colours offer the best way to create impact — yet in their own subtle way, so do rich dark dues such as deep red, brown, black and green. While often associated with a period look, they also lend depth and sophistication to modern schemes. In small spaces with little light, they offer the perfect opportunity to create an intimate atmosphere, ideal for bedrooms and studies. But if it’s a lighter feel you’re after, pair them with light colours in complementary hues. Photo courtesy of Westminster Furniture

COOL & CALM > For a tranquil feel that will bring softness and life to a contemporary scheme, these colours are the ideal choice. However, remember that when selecting from a soft palette, there’s a thin line between subtle and insipid; the best shades are those intense enough to withstand both sombre and bright light.

small, dark and dull room. It is much better to embrace the small space by using a strong rich colour and create an intimate, dramatic space. It is always fun to use full gloss on the walls in small spaces as well, so that light is bounced off all the walls. And don’t forget that busy patterned wallpaper can also work in a small space. Another bonus of using a strong colour, particularly in a hall, is that when you pass from a darker area into a light one, it creates the illusion that the lighter area is bigger. If you’re war y of using strong colour, use it in a small space or a room you don’t frequent a lot — it can bring real joy to glimpse something different through a door or even the inside of a cupboard. This is especially effective in children’s bedrooms if you prefer them to be mostly neutral.

Even in a ver y neutral house, it’s great to introduce some accent colours — these often help to make the neutrals look lighter and create more interest. Accent colours can be introduced in recesses, on furniture, or feature walls. For the latter, the shape of the room may be affected because a stronger colour will advance towards you in contrast to a cooler colour. So if you want a room to look more square, put the stronger colour on a shorter wall. This is particularly useful for making a narrow corridor feel less tunnel-like. A darker tone on the end short wall will bring that wall towards you and make the space a more satisfactor y shape.

There are three basic ways of decorating: • Coloured walls and white woodwork • Lighter walls and darker woodwork • One colour for both walls and woodwork The most traditional style – colour on the walls and white gloss on the woodwork is a clean but somewhat austere look which has become less fashionable in the last decade. There is a lot to be gained by using a white that is more sympathetic to the wall colour to create a softer atmosphere. If the contrast

VIBRANT HUES > These are colours that bring a room to life. From glowing yellows and reds to rich, shimmering blues, they offer an opportunity to add real warmth and depth to both airy, contemporary spaces and small light-starved rooms. In order to create a cohesive look, ensure that wall colours are picked up in upholstery, rugs and accessories.

PATTERN & COLOUR Wallpapers offer the perfect way to create a distinctive look. The more decorative they are, the simpler you can be in your approach to other elements such as upholstery and curtains. The appeal of high-quality wallpapers is that they have a tactile quality that gives walls a completely new dimension. For a cohesive feel, co-ordinate the dominant colour of your design with flooring, paintwork, fabrics and accessories.

between your walls and woodwork is strong, your eye will be drawn to the line of contrast and you become very aware of where the windows and doors are. When you’re too conscious of these elements it makes the room feel smaller. If they’re all softened you will notice the confines of the room less and it will therefore appear bigger. Most people want to create as much light and space in a room as they can. Putting a lighter colour on the walls and darker tone on the woodwork is the easiest way to achieve this, as the darker woodwork makes the walls appear lighter. While this might seem an intimidating prospect, remember that we often see rooms where the woodwork is unpainted — maybe a rich mahogany or a light pine — and accept it, so that just has to be transferred into paint colours. This form of decorating works best when you are using a totally neutral scheme. A very dark colour on skirting boards creates a contemporary look. If you have a darker colour low down in a room, everything above it feels lighter and the overall feel is lighter. Dark skirtings work best when they are deep so that there isn’t a thin dark line at floor level. The third method of decorating is to use one colour on both the walls and the woodwork. Many people are scared of using colour on woodwork, particularly on windows, but it is amazing how natural it feels, even if a strong colour has been used. A room painted in just one colour also feels bigger, because with no contrasts you are less aware of the confines of the room. Another bonus of using one colour is that it connects the interior with the exterior. If your window woodwork is the same colour as the walls the eye doesn’t stop to register a second colour on the frame, but glides straight out to the view.

Ceilings Most people think that the whiter a ceiling is, the higher and lighter the room will feel, but this is not always the case. If the colour of the ceiling is in extreme contrast to the wall colour, the eye is immediately drawn to this contrast line. Therefore, you are aware of where the wall ends and the ceiling begins. If the wall and ceiling colours are closer in tone, that area will be less noticeable. Go as dark as you dare on the ceilings, it won’t take away light and there’s a high chance that your ceiling height will appear to increase. If the line where the wall and ceiling meet is not very straight you can hide it by using the same colour on both. H&L

Seven steps to make sure your WINDOW TREATMENTS MEASURE UP Designers know that the best, most fashionable window treatments are custom-made. Long before making your selection you will have looked at your lifestyle, fashion preferences and your home’s general architecture to see what will work aesthetically and practically.

INSIDE

OUTSIDE

Now, just before leaving for the store, it’s time to measure. This is critical, whether you’re taking a minimalist approach or wanting full-blown treatments and shutters. Designers and window treatment manufacturers suggest you take the best, most accurate measurements you can yourself. Providing digital photos of each window is also very helpful, especially if there are special considerations. The following are guidelines only for measuring. Check with your INSIDE designer or fabricator to see what their policies are so you don’t wind up with window fashions that don’t quite measure up. Ask about having your window pro or designer INSIDE do the final measuring. OUTSIDE Measure EVERY window. They may all look alike, but windows of similar sizes, even if they’re from the same manufacturer, can be deceptive. This is most common in older Spanish homes where hand-work or site carpentry was common. A window also could have been repaired with lumber of slightly different dimension from the original, just enough to throw off a measurement. Every half a centimeter counts in a custom fit! Use a metal tape for accurate measurement. Fabric tapes and yardsticks are notoriously inaccurate. They stretch, warp and swell over time. Record all measurements to the nearest 1/4 of a centimeter. (Check with your manufacturer to be sure.) Take inner and outer measurements. For inside mount window treatments … measure a window’s inside frame width in three places: top, center and bottom. Same for its height at left, center and right. Record the narrowest and shortest measurement for each window. For outside mount window treatments … measure the entire area you wish to cover, width and length, including overlapping areas of the wall beyond your windows’ boundaries, if that’s part of your design. Here again, a photo or sketch will illustrate your plan. Take all possible dimensions and note window depth, framing/trim dimensions, hardware type, placement and sizes (i.e. latch, hinge, etc.). Jot down if the windows slide past each other left and right or up and down or if they open outward or in. Mark where you want window treatment controls, direction of opening and hardware and trim options. Sketch approximate size and location of specialty shapes like arches, quarter and half rounds, or other geometric shapes. H&L

Rugs for texture The winter months are rapidly approaching and with the days being shorter, darker and colder, the temptation to stay snug under the duvet can make getting up in the morning a real effort.

Mixed flooring Rugs work really well in the home with other flooring types — like in this lounge where the rug is used to define the seating area and also give you that lovely underfoot feel as you kick your shoes off!

Rug up to keep warm … or transform the floor of your home into a focal point! Rugs lift your decorative scheme out of the ordinary, adding colour, an accent and life. They are easy to move and give you the ultimate in flexibility. Rugs are perfect for defining areas such as a dining table in a family room, or different seating areas in a large living room. If your scheme is missing something, pop into a carpet gallery or design company and take home a few of their extensive range of rugs. There will be one to suit your chosen decorative scheme.

A new way to look at rugs! • Rugs look great layered over carpet and especially stylish over a flat weave that will frame it, like wool sisal. Layering rugs is a lot like layering clothes — a skillful mix of styles results in an updated look. So, pile it on this Autumn, and enjoy the endless possibilities. • Wool carpets and rugs can make a statement in some very atypical areas of the home as well as creating a unique personal space as in a home theatre. • Designers tell us that rugs are hard workers because they absorb sound. Heathered rugs in darker shades are also good at hiding everyday dirt tracked in from outdoors. • If you are adding a rug or carpet to a fully decorated room, your best choice may be a solid style that contributes a single colour, or a subtle combination of shades, along with a bit of texture. A coordinating rug can also be used in a room with patterned furnishings, but designers will generally advise that the patterns should not touch. In this environment, make sure your upholstered furniture has legs and that a solid-colour edge is added to the bottom of chair skirts and that full-length curtains are used to separate the two patterns. • Think of your floor as your “fi fth wall,” worthy of your decor attention, and don’t forget that it’s the surface people come in contact more than any other. So, why not make a bold, dramatic statement with products like the ones you find here. • Ideally, a rug or carpet should be the first purchase for a room, providing a palette that inspires the rest of the décor. By decorating from the floor up, you can pull accent colours from the rug to use as base colours in furnishings and custom window treatments. Coordinating patterns in accessories, such as custom pillows to pick up colours and patterns, add visual interest without causing pattern overload, and they’re quick design freshen-uppers. Sheet Vinyl and Vinyl Tile Vinyl Flooring has come a long way! From the limited linoleum designs of the 50’s and 60’s, today’s vinyl offers amazingly realistic wood, stone, or ceramic looks. Today’s wear layers are thicker and more durable than ever and there are now vinyl floors that can even be installed “below-grade” in a basement game or family room. Vinyl is warm underfoot, easy to install and easy to maintain. Simply mop with a no-wax cleaner and sweep to remove particles that might scratch the floor. Modern vinyl floors are asbestos-free, making them a safer choice. Vinyl is an extremely versatile flooring option. It can be laid in large sheets, meaning that a larger area can be covered quickly and with a minimum of seams. It can also be laid in strips to give your floor a realistic wood, ceramic or stone look. Natural Habitat in La Cala de Mijas offer a wide variety from Karndean International. Of course either way you go, vinyl has lots going for it. It’s hardwearing and easy to clean and care for; being soft and warm underfoot, it’s a popular choice for areas such as bathrooms and kitchens..

New style textures Vinyl can now also bring your floor texture and detail to bring to life the authentic look of stone, wood or metal.

Tiles

Ceramic tiles are an age old product and the timeless choice. They can add that special touch of class to a home and are one of your most durable flooring options. With beautiful imported ranges available in a huge selection of materials, textures, colours, sizes, shapes and prices, tiles are great in utility areas, but can also be used imaginatively in many other areas of the home, too. A wooden floor is the perfect type of flooring as it’s a classic surface that wears well, improves with age and complements most styles of interior; from the stripped down, minimalist interior to the warm, friendly interior of a finca. Wooden floors are attractive, warm underfoot, and durable. And now there are laminate floors available as well. But what’s the difference? Timber floors are made with a layer of real wood on the top of a HDF core and are laid over top of your existing floor. Depending on the thickness of the wood layer you can sand back and refinish the floor several times. They are pre-finished with lacquers, which means no smells and waiting around for layers of polyurethane to dry! Laminate flooring also has a layered system with an HDF core, but here the top layer is actually a photograph. The advantages of laminate flooring are they can cost less, are tough, and easy to clean. H&L

Give any room a fresh new look and complement your home decor with attractive and affordable

Choosing the right rug can reduce harsh echoes and warm up the cold and hard surfaces present in many Spanish homes. Painted walls and marble or tiled floors look great but in the winter months these cool surfaces benefit from the warmth of textiles. Whether they’re furniture, curtains, carpets or rugs, all soft textiles will help to warm up the look, feel and sound of a room, softening echoes throughout. Rugs made from natural materials such as wool are a firm favourite thanks to their warm feel and sound-dampening qualities.

But remember — choosing the right rug is all about what makes you happy. As helpful as it can be to get opinions from friends, neighbours or visitors, you should listen to your own taste and take advantage of expert tips from professionals. Some materials, including carpets, can be treated with dirt-repellent Teflon and anti-static heat set thermal treatment. Treated rugs are more easy to care for and stand up to hard use. Rug retailers specialise in knowing these materials and treatments and they can recommend the best options for sustainability and easy care.

Attractive prices

Rug Galleries

It’s easy to find an attractive rug at a good price. All you need to do is: 1. Measure the room in which you intend to place the rug and get an idea of the size of rug you require. 2. Consider colour carefully. If you can, take a photograph of the room so that you can use it to coordinate the colour and design of the ideal rug with the room’s decor. 3. Note any family allergies (such as to wool or other fabrics) and other factors such as whether the room is under regular or heavily use, such as a hallway. Then, with this information at hand, you can visit a shop where you can get expert advice and assistance on: • Opting for the most suitable material. • Selecting the right colour and design to suit your room. • Choosing the right rug to suit your budget.

These days rug galleries contain a wide choice of styles — from ultra-modern to traditional. Choose from various colours and sizes — some may even offer your own measurements. Some specialist shops can also offer bespoke rugs made to your own colours and even your own design, creating highly individualised rugs. Large rug manufacturers know that individuality is the word of the day when it comes to home decor and have started to offer customizable products.

Fitted carpets

During the winter many homes cry out for warmer floors, particularly in bedrooms. As for rugs, there’s also a huge range of fitted carpets. Your first step is to visit a professional store and get some ideas on what kind of carpet will look right in your home. The best way to do this is to ask someone from the shop to provide you with a selection of carpet samples. Within a couple of days of making your choice,

an expert can visit your home free-of-charge to measure-up and recommend the best type of material. For example, one popular choice is stainfree Teflon treatment. Remember to allow time for your carpet to arrive. Because many carpet manufacturers are located in Belgium and the UK it can easily take over a week to ship the material to Spain.

Demand good service

Rugs and carpets are specialist products, especially in Spain. People who work with these products every day have a lot of experience with materials, colours and patterns. So, select an experienced retailer who will give good service. Ask them to visit your home for getting some new ideas. Use their knowledge to give a breath of fresh air to your home decor. Many Spanish homes are unique and that often means that it takes more time to decorate them well. You can achieve better and faster results by using professionals.

Interior decoration takes time

Selecting and building a suitable interior for your home takes time, but if you choose wisely you’ll never get tired of it. Your home decor is for you to love and enjoy! A View to a Thrill BY CHRIS DUFFILL

An imaginative and clever approach to windows and doors can transform your living space, enhance your home and make the best of the Spanish climate — without spoiling that fantastic view… There’s no doubt that most people enjoy a room with a view. Throw in some good weather, a sun lounger (and perhaps even a drink or two) and you’ve got it made. Spain certainly has a lot to offer when it comes to life’s simple pleasures — but what if you could enjoy it all just that little bit more? Come rain or come shine. Well, you can. Taking a bold new approach to windows and doors can invite light, air and natural beauty into your home, protect it from the elements and enhance the value and appeal of your property. You might even start using the garden or patio as an accessible and attractive extension to your home - the addition of folding doors or sliding walls transforming the great outdoors into valuable extra living space.

Folding Doors Enjoy your vista.

Why sit behind a row of doors and windows when you could fold them all away and enjoy the scenery without having to peer past doors and around frames? By replacing traditional doors and windows with a ‘wall’ of folding doors you’re able to change the look of the 50 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

façade and maximise the size of the opening. With frames chosen from a variety of materials and designs (including no frames, more on that later) a set of folding doors can be quickly folded away — concertina fashion — to provide a wide open view of your surroundings and easy access to outside areas.

Sliding Walls

The great outdoors: now available in widescreen. The last time you saw one of these amazing things was probably on a penthouse apartment in a James Bond movie. But don’t worry — getting your very own sliding wall doesn’t require a master-plan for world domination or a vault filled with gold bullion. Much like a set of folding doors, the individual panels that make up the sliding wall move aside and stack up together – but instead of being visible at the side of your façade, the sliding wall panels are instead housed in an internal niche and totally hidden. Because most don’t require a threshold in the floor, they’re used internally as well as externally to divide rooms and enable dy-

namic use of living space. Add to that the undeniable wow-factor of being able to slide away an entire wall to reveal your pool or sun patio, it’s no surprise that sliding walls are seen as a sophisticated and stylish option for both interior and exterior design. Also a popular choice for frameless installation.

Going Frameless?

When less really is more. Frameless glazing (also known as ‘Glass Curtains’ or a ‘horizontally-sliding wall’) is possibly the next best thing to putting nothing at all between you and the great outdoors. It does exactly what is says on the tin — glazing without Photo courtesy of PROTEC WINDOWS

conventional frames. Instead, just a few attractive steel fixings hold the panels in place, offering superior visibility and ease of movement. A frameless installation can often be provided for folding doors too. As windows and doors go, this is probably the ultimate solution in providing unspoilt views and open access to the outdoor life.

Balcony Glazing

An all-year-round romance. Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo? Well, he’s outside in the cold while you’re sitting pretty on your balcony — in the winter. Yes that’s right — on a balcony, in the winter. Or in the summer. All year round in fact, thanks to balcony glazing. Most people really only get to use their balconies a few days of the year — partly because they’ve become used to treating them as off-limits during the winter. But why not enjoy a balcony all year round? With the addition of glazing that encloses the entire balcony, you can enjoy the view in all weathers. And you’ll be glad to know that when the sun does shine you won’t slow-cook yourself in the balcony equivalent of a sauna — just fold back the balcony glazing and enjoy the views, the light and the fresh air. As an added bonus, adding any form of glazing to a balcony creates a heat buffer between the outdoors and the rest of the house, saving on wasted heat and energy bills in the winter. The savings can really add up if you install thermally insulated Double Glazing, which can effectively reduce noise pollution too.

Choosing wisely... When considering new windows and doors the choices you make should

suit your taste and budget as much as they’ll suit your home. These days there are certainly plenty of styles to choose from and a range of attractive and practical materials. But home-improvements like these aren’t just about creating space and sprucing things up. Depending on your final choice, there are clever ways to reduce costs — both to your fuel bill and to the environment.

HomeImprovement > Which frame? Broadly speaking, frames usually come in variations of wood, UPVC or aluminium. Beyond choosing the frame that suits your property best (unless, of course, you’re going frameless with folding or sliding glass doors), it’s good to know the key strengths of each material before you go ahead.

Wood There’s no getting away from it — sometimes only real wood will do. It ranks highly in the beauty stakes and insulates quite well against heat loss. For the green-minded amongst you, opting for wood might seem an unlikely step — but when you consider the energy needed to produce alternative artificial materials, wood is actually the one of the greener options. Many window and door frames are made from renewable sources. Although wood, particularly hardwood, is inherently durable, it does require maintenance and treatment to keep it in tip-top shape. Yes, wooden frames may not be the cheapest option, but they do look fantastic.

UPVC It’s basically plastic, but UPVC has come a long way in the last few years. Surprisingly it’s 100% recyclable — meaning there’s little impact to the environment in re-using the material. The production of UPVC is an energy-intensive process, but it is long-lasting. Modern UPVC does a great job of impersonating various types of wood — except that, unlike real wood, it won’t rot or require treatment. It’s also a great thermal insulator, further enhancing the energy efficiency of your home.

Aluminium Light, strong and modern-looking, aluminium has the added benefit of being extremely weather-resistant. It’s non-corrosive and handles changes in temperature well. And, if you’re thinking ‘green’, aluminium is also one of the easier materials to recycle. Aluminium does conduct heat though, so most frames are provided with thermal insulation strips to stop heat leakage. The super low-maintenance option.

Double Glazing? Remember the dark ages of Double Glazing? Those dreadful sliding patio doors that misted up and only opened a few inches at a time before sticking? Thankfully things have moved on a lot in the design and functionality stakes since then. Double Glazing works in a number of ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home as well as maintain the outside of your property. The main trick it has up its sleeve is the design – two panes of glass form a sandwich with gas (or a vacuum) trapped between them to form a sealed unit. As heat can’t transfer through the space inside, Double Glazing is highly effective at reducing heat loss. In addition, some have special coatings designed to reduce infrared radiation (heat waves) from transferring through the window itself, helping to keep the interior of the house cool. If you’re really into the technical stuff as well as saving the environment then the label, or data sheet, provided with the glazing should tell you everything you need to know; from condensation resistance to heat transmission. But for the rest of us the bottom line is that it actually works. Despite the barrage of cheap window adverts that hit you whenever you set foot in the UK, Double Glazing is still the best and most cost-efficient way of minimising heat-loss and reducing those energy bills.

Expand your horizons You can find a huge range of styles to suit your personal taste and enhance your Spanish home. Add Double Glazing to a sliding wall, balcony or some folding doors and you’ll have embraced the best that the Spanish lifestyle has to offer, increased your living space and taken your first step into a greener environment. Literally. Enjoy the view. H&L 52 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

Energy Saving with Glass Manufacturers S.L Argon Gas and Glass Curtains Window Technology: Argon Gas Filled Units

An improvement that can be made to the thermal performance of insulating glazing units is to reduce the conductance of the air space between the layers. Originally, the space was filled with air or flushed with dry nitrogen just prior to sealing. In a sealed glass insulating unit, air currents between the two panes of glazing carry heat to the top of the unit and settle into cold pools at the bottom. Filling the space with a less conductive, more viscous, or slow-moving gas minimises the convection currents within the space, conduction through the gas is reduced, and the overall transfer of heat between the inside and outside is reduced. In time, this concentration will gradually evaporate, but only at a rate estimated from 0, 5 to 1% per year. R-DMC’S has recognised the need for argon gas in Spain and their investment in the machinery has enabled them to offer customers this much improved sealed unit. R-DMC’S is a TESTIMONIAL family run business with We have now returned to the UK, and I am 5 years experience on the just writing to let you know how pleased we Coast in all aspects of glass are with the outside rail and glass curtain manufacturing, from double glazed sealed units to supply & installation that your company table tops, showers, shop RDMCS supplied us with. Thank the only company manuyou, Dave and Dan for supplying us with facturing the complete value for money quality products. system in-house. Best regards John & Margaret Bellenie They have had great success with their glass curtains as they are manufacturing a German system called Sunflex. R-DMC’S have been given the official distribution for the area and are very happy with the product. Sunflex truly sells itself, it is a far superior system which is typical of German design. A lot of time and thought has gone into the system, making it one of, if not the best available. Not only does it look far more robust but the design makes it very easy for owners to use and therefore reduces damage that can occur (especially for rental properties) with the use of glass curtain systems. Glass curtains can also be an energy saving investment, and their customers have commented on the difference glass curtains have made to the warmth inside their homes. For example, if you are enclosing a terrace that is joined to a lounge you have an extra layer of 10mm glass giving you that extra insulation and stops drafts, also if the glass curtains are kept closed in the winter during the daytime the terrace has already warmed up and the glass helps keep the heat in. Another energy saver is to use reflectorsol glass in a sealed unit. By using this glass indoor heat energy is reflected into the home during winter, and in the summer, outdoor heat energy is reflected outdoors. (See picture for explanation). R-DMC’S prides itself on a fast and reliable service, offering companies and the public a very quick service. If you have had a break in or an accident then this is the company to contact. R-DMC’S are also specialists in stainless steel and pool surrounds. They use only the highest grade stainless steel which means that the end product does not suffer from rust and corrosion. Stainless steel can be used with a multitude of glass from toughened to coloured laminated which is a very effective way of personalising your property as this is a bespoke service.

Going Green, Saving Green Pool and spa owners who want to go green — and save it — need only look to the sun.

Water for what ails you

Hydrotherapy is probably the oldest form of medical treatment. It involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating ailments. Every Sunrise Spa has been engineered to optimise your hydrotherapy experience. We have designed our spas to combine the warm healing waters with the principles of massage therapy to produce a stress melting, body healing soaking experience. Over the past 30 years, solar technology has evolved into an environmentally friendly alternative to gas or oil for heating pools that also makes financial sense. In fact, solar pool heating is the most cost-effective use of solar energy in many climates. Although the initial upfront cost depends on the size of your pool or spa, the number of collectors needed and your geographic location, solar heating systems typically pay for themselves in two to seven years). After that, the energy needed for comfortable swimming or soaking is gratis.

Most solar pool heating systems contain the following: • Solar collectors, typically panels fixed near the pool — often on a roof — through which pool water is circulated to be heated by the sun • A filter to remove debris before water is pumped through the collectors • A pump to circulate water through the filter and collectors and back to the pool • A flow control valve, an automatic or manual device that diverts pool water through the solar collectors • Sensors, often mounted next to collector panels and in the pool, to monitor water and collector temperatures — and determine whether water should be directed or bypassed through the heating system Water is pumped through the filter and then the solar collectors, where it is heated before returned to the pool. In hot climates, like the Costa del Sol, collectors can also cool the pool during peak summer months by circulating the water at night.

Sizing a system depends on many factors — pool size, length of the pool use season, average regional temperatures, desired pool temperature, the collectors’ directional orientation and tilt, and whether you use a pool cover (if you do, you can decrease the required collector area). Solar system contractors use computer programs to determine specific system requirements and collector number and sizing.

Spain — world leader in Solar Power

• In March 2007 the world’s first commercial solar power tower plant, PS10, was opened near Seville. • In late April 2009, the world’s biggest solar power tower near Sevilla began commercial operation, called the PS20. The new facility is located adjacent to PS10.

Collector Confidential

The heart of the system is the solar collectors, typically flat panels that come in a variety of sizes and can be mixed and matched. As a general rule, their total surface should equal 50 to 100 percent of the surface area of your pool. On the Costa del Sol if you want to enjoy year-round pool use the collectors should equal 100 percent of the pool’s square footage. If you only use your pool six to eight months a year, the typical system size is 60 to 70 percent of the pool surface area. Glazed collectors have copper tubes and a black metal absorber plate, which are stored in a glass-covered insulated case. Because they produce higher temperatures, they are most commonly used for heating spas, hot tubs and indoor pools (as well as in-home hot water). Unglazed collectors are typically used to heat outdoor pools. The panels are usually made from durable polypropylene plastics with an ultraviolet light inhibitor to extend panel life; sometimes, unglazed copper or copper-aluminum is used. Positioning solar collectors is like real estate. It’s all about location, location, location. You want them in an unshaded area, as close to a southern exposure as possible. But collectors don’t necessarily have to be situated on the roof. They can be elevated on a rack or ground-mounted near an existing slope. Once installed, a solar heating system should last about 20 years if properly maintained. If the pool’s chemical balance and filtering system are checked regularly, there’s little maintenance required, but glazed collectors may need to be cleaned where rainwater doesn’t provide a natural rinse. The bottom line: Look above for one answer to go green and enjoy your daily dip, knowing that you’re helping both the environment and your bank account. After all, you’ve got it made out of the shade.

In the Red George Bernard Shaw wrote that “If a woman rebels against high-heeled shoes, she should do it in a very smart hat.” … We say she should do it wearing fabulous red lipstick. How to Achieve the Classic Red Lipstick Look 1) Apply concealer around your lips, then, using a big brush, dust your face with a light coat of powder. 2) Outline lips with a lip liner as close to your lipstick color as possible. 3) Using a lip brush, carefully apply your favorite red lipstick, filling in the line inside your lips. Kiss a tissue and apply again. 4) Keep everything else on your face to a minimum. Dust a light eye shadow over your eye lids. Chanel’s Liberty, Estée Lauder’s Apricot and Dior’s Ready to Beige are wonderful neutral colors. 5) Apply a thin flick of black eyeliner to the corners of your eyes and a single coat of black mascara. Stay clear of blusher. 6) Roll your tongue on the inside of your lips to avoid lipstick marks on your teeth. 7) Smile! You’re ready for just about anything.

Eye Concerns Your eyes always give the game away. Late nights, smoky atmospheres and slaving over a computer all take their toll on the skin around your eyes and the older you get the harder it is to disguise the damage. The appearance is swollen eyelids, bags, dark circles, crows feet and puffiness. EYE FACTS • The skin is this area is very fine and fragile (about 4 times thinner than the rest of the face). • There are no oil glands or fatty tissue to protect the area. • You are 10 times more likely to have reactions and allergies here than anywhere else on the body. • Blinking up to 10,000 times a day, leads to destruction of collagen and elastin fibres. This fine and delicate area needs extra special attention with specially formulated products that are light in texture and can address particular concerns associated with the eyes. It is very important to avoid using any moisturiser made for the face as these can be rich and heavy and cause further problems. Here are a few common eye problems and some suggestions to sort them out.

Problem: Puffy skin around the eyes Usually worse in the morning, caused by a pooling of fluid and lipids under the eye as you sleep. This happens as there is a lack of natural toxin drainage system (the lymphatic circulation). The supportive tissue becomes stretched and the contours loosen. Solution: An eye gel will constrict the bags and cool and refresh the area. Apply a small amount of eye gel under the eye and pat in with your fingertips. These gels contain stimulants to increase circulation and decongest the area. They also tighten and firm up the skin to strengthen any loosened skin from the bags. Apply with small presses from the bridge of the nose towards your ears. This will help to drain the fluid and improve the appearance. Keep your eye gel in the fridge for an instant wake up fix. Try a gel eye mask or soothing eye makeup remover straight from the fridge. Placed on the eyes for 10 minutes, it should help to constrict blood vessels in the area, reducing the puffiness and eye bags.

Problem: Dark circles Most people believe that this problem occurs after too many late nights, but is actually caused by the blood vessels showing through the fine skin here. When slight trauma occurs, similar to when a bruise appears, there is a slowing of toxin removal and circulation so the blood becomes static and shows through the already thin skin. Solution: Try an eye balm or cream to cool and decongest the area. Specialist eye products are designed to decrease the appearance of dark circles under the eyes by strengthening the capillary network under the skin. Products containing Vitamin K, Cucumber and Caffeine work wonders. If the shadows are very dark you may want to use an under eye concealer to cover them. Chose a shade to match your skin tone or very slightly lighter. Old wives tales of cucumber slices and tea bags do hold some truth. Cucumber is very soothing and decongesting, whilst the caffeine in tea is an excellent diuretic. Try Green Tea for its antioxidant benefits or Chamomile for its anti-inflammatory effects.

Problem: Fine lines & wrinkles It’s a common concern, as the eye area is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing. Constant blinking and frowning loosens the conjunctive tissue (collagen and elastin fibres) and makes it fragile and more prone to crow’s feet. UV rays, stress and looking at computer screens all play a big role in premature ageing setting in. Solution: Choose a lightweight eye cream that will give protection, help to minimise crow’s feet and smooth fine lines and wrinkles by strengthening collagen and elastin fibres. These products also work very well at smoothing fine lines and wrinkles 60 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

5 Essential Flat-Belly Foods Even if you’ve spent the past months dieting yourself into fit form, a few poor food choices each week can quickly add up to a juggernaut of jiggle well before Christmas Day. Don’t believe us? Consider the caloric damage of typical summer activities — weekly BBQs provide pounds of juicy burgers topped with gobs of high-calorie condiments; ice cream dates offer options of double and triple scoops, smothered in sugarpacked and fat-blasted toppings; and seasonal drink choices (the kind you add umbrellas to and sip from faux-coconuts) guarantee you’ll wash it all down with hundreds of extra calories. Not exactly flat-belly fare. Following is a list of five flat belly foods — the more of these bulgebattlers you eat, the better your chances of keeping those abs flat.

QUINOA

1

Per 1/4 cup: 170 calories 2.5 g fat 7 g protein 3 g fiber For starters, anytime you choose a whole-grain product over one made from nutrient-stripped white flour, you wage war against belly fat. Researchers found that dieters who ate wholegrains lost twice as much belly fat as those who stuck to white-flour products — even though they’d consumed the same number of calories. What’s more, quinoa contains twice the belly-filling protein as regular cereal grains, fewer glucose-raising carbohydrates, and even a handful of healthy fats. So start your day off with a cup of cooked quinoa combined with a 1/2 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of blueberries — microwave for 60 seconds, and you have a delicious (and slimming) alternative to your traditional oatmeal.

GREEN TEA (0 calories) Catechins, the powerful antioxidants found in green tea, are known to increase metabolism. A study by Japanese researchers found that participants who consumed 690 milligrams of catechins from green tea daily had significantly lower body mass indexes and smaller waist measurements than those in a control group. It’s safe to say that green tea is one of the best beverages for your health.

KEFIR

3

Per cup: 174 calories 2 g fat 14 g protein 3 g fiber Think of kefir as drinkable yogurt, or an extra-thick, protein-packed smoothie. In either case, this delicious dairy product is a belly-blasting essential. Beyond the satiety-inducing protein, the probiotics in kefir may also speed weight loss. British scientists found that these active organisms boosted the breakdown of fat molecules in mice, preventing the rodents from gaining weight. The researchers still need to prove the finding in humans, but there’s no danger in downing probiotic-packed products. We like Lifeway Lowfat Blueberry Kefir — it contains L. casei, the same probiotic used in the study.

4

AVOCADO

Per avocado: 322 calories 29 g fat (4 g saturated, 20 g monounsaturated) 13 g fiber 4 g protein Never fear this full-fat Mediterranean-diet staple: It’s teeming with healthy monounsaturated fats (also found in olive oil), which have been linked to lowered LDL cholesterol levels and weight loss — so go ahead and indulge!

EGGS

5

Per 1 large scrambled egg: 102 calories 7 g fat (2 g saturated) 7 g protein A British study found that people who increased the percentage of protein-based calories in their diet burned 71 more calories a day. Jumpstart your metabolism as soon as you wake up with a protein-rich breakfast of scrambled eggs.

The Driver’s Seat >

PLAYING IT SAFE Mercedes has a long history of protecting its customers. In the 1950s, the company introduced the world (and crash test dummies everywhere) to the concept of the “crumple zone.” Twenty years later, Mercedes was first on the block with antilock brakes. In the 1980s, it debuted the now-ubiquitous airbag. So the all-new E-Class’s forward-thinking safety gadgetry is probably just a sneak peak at tomorrow’s standard equipment.

Special Ops-worthy gear abounds, like Night View Assist Plus, which uses infrared light and a windshield-mounted camera to beam crystalclear images of the dark road ahead to the in-dash screen. Then there’s the aforementioned Brake Assist Plus, which uses info from three differ66 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

ent front-mounted radars to detect objects up to 700 feet in front of the car and, depending on speed and distance, apply varying degrees of braking pressure to avoid — or at least mitigate — a collision. A network of sensors called Attention Assist continuously monitors 70 different variables, ranging from road conditions to the driver’s steering angle and pedal pressure inputs, to formulate a unique profile of anyone who gets behind the wheel. If the system detects deviations from the profile (ostensibly due to dozing), there’s an audible warning — and a cute little icon of a steaming coffee cup displayed on the instrument panel. Taken together, Mercedes claims that all this new safety technology elevates the E-Class from mere midsize luxury sedan to “an ‘intelligent partner’ that can see, feel, react instinctively, and function independently in critical situations…” Cool or kind of scary? You decide. The incredibly long stretches of the AP-7 on the Costa del Sol don’t lend themselves to spirited driving; then again, neither does an E-Class. The E350 (starting at 54,700 euros) is motivated by a 268-hp V-6 — more than enough to get you where you’re going. The E500 (starting at 75,750 euros) packs a V-8 that delivers a potent 382 horses and 391lb-ft. of torque, which offers a bit of driving excitement — especially in Sport mode, which features more aggressive throttle response and shift times. The exterior styling is a pleasant extension of the current angular language invading the Mercedes lineup, punctuated most noticeably on the E-Class by sharp new headlamps. In looks and road manners alike, the new E-Class sedan is fairly mild-mannered But the E-Class story doesn’t end there. After six years of the femme-skewing second-generation CLK coupe, Mercedes offers up its replacement: the E-Class coupe. Has Mercedes finally given us a proper sports coupe? Fitness, Leisure & Golf > Note from the Editor

Welcome to the newest addition to the Costa del Sol HOME & LIFETYLE Magazine. Fitness, Leisure and Golf form a large part of the Costa del Sol Lifestyle, therefore it was a natural transition to introduce this new section in the magazine. In the coming issues, in addition to up-to-date golfing news and feature article on fitness and leisure, we will be featuring some of the beautiful golf courses the coast has to offer — starting with Calanova Golf Club. Golfing is not just a sport but also a social activity and Costa del Sol HOME & LIFESTYLE magazine has introduced its own Golfing Society for our readers and advertisers — The 4Play Golf Society — a society that not only enjoys the game of golf, but also introduces new friendships, business deals and social events. We also hope to build a large ladies membership for our special Ladies Day Events which include lunch. To tee off the season for new members, we have a round of Competition Golf, with legendary Darts Player John Low (please see below and the following pages for more details). I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome to the team avid golfer Stuart Woodall, who is our 4Play Golf Society Coordinator and Event Organiser; also “Lin”, our feature writer for Fitness, Health, Leisure and Golf issues. Sam Torrance

Sam Torrance and Costantino Rocca are the latest European Senior Tour professionals to confirm their attendance at the Benahavis Senior Masters which is taking place at La Quinta Golf and Country Club from 16th to 18th October 2009. Torrance and Rocca will join former Spanish Ryder Cup legend Manuel Piñero, who is also the course designer at La Costantino Rocca Quinta. Piñero is the tournament ambassador and will be flying the flag for his native Spain when he competes in what is proving to be a very strong field for this inaugural event. La Quinta Golf and Country Club lies in the heart of the Benahavis Region — an area renowned for its beautiful mountain scenery and outstanding golf courses. It is currently home to nine of the sixty golf courses in the Costa del Sol with this number expected to increase to fi fteen in the next decade. Volvo World Match Play Championship 29th October 2009 to 1st November 2009 The Championship will be held in Spain for the first time in its history, moving from Wentworth Club. Sixteen of the world’s best players will go head-to-head in classic match play golf over the magnificent 7,439-yard course at Finca Cortesin designed by Cabell B Robinson. The change in qualifying criteria announced last year will ensure the most cosmopolitan and International World Match Play field in its 45-year history. The Official World Golf Ranking and The Race to Dubai will be used to identify the 16-man field, with leading players from the continents of Europe, Africa/Middle East, North America, South America, Asia and Australasia qualifying along with the defending Champion and winner of the 2009 Volvo China Open. The winner of each group will qualify for the semi finals which, along with the final, will be played over 36 holes in traditional and compelling head-to head-match play golf, considered by many to be the purest form of the royal and ancient game.

< Fitness, Leisure & Golf HEALTH BENEFITS OF PLAYING GOLF

Golf isn’t just about improving your handicap it also improves your health…

Hi, Let me introduce myself! My name is Linda and I am a recovering Fitness-holic. I continually strive to resist the hype of all the Do’s and Don’ts of Diets and fitness regimes. After earlier trials and tribulations I try hard not to be consumed with all the latest lifestyle protocol and the set of rules to which I should abide. But I have become stronger, by using my common sense to prevail, sieving out the trash and dissecting the latest fads, I can now distinguish the facts from the fiction. But it has been a long and winding road to reach this stage … let me tell you how it all began. I first became acquainted with the leisure industry — dare I say it — thirty plus years ago! I have therefore worked within the health and fitness field nearly all my life, in a professional capacity and on a personal level during four major gaps when I had my children. Over the years, through strive and struggle, I have continually studied and gained an array of qualifications to increase my knowledge base. Adding ‘strings to my bow’ so to speak. The incentive: to increase my expertise on my subject matter and, finally, encompassing the array of health related qualifications with a B.A Honors Degree in Health Studies in 2008. Whilst I don’t claim to be an authority on any one particular subject I do profess to having an inkling. I tell you these things so that when I impart any health related information to you that it is just that! I will not be preaching to you but will pass on to you what I think is relevant and recent, then you can decide. My last role was as a Development Officer at Active Lifestyles, providing local leisure services in the UK. My recent role is still in the leisure industry but for golf in Spain. My first article will aptly be about some of the health benefits of playing golf. Here is a prelude to that article which will be in the December/ January issue of Costa del Sol Home & Lifestyle Magazine. If you wish to contact me with any questions or issues you would like to see published please contact me at lin@golfingoptions.com

If you think golf is a boring and elitist game that does absolutely nothing to improve health, then think again. Golf provides a stimulating challenge combined with a walk in pleasant surroundings and can be played by people of all abilities and ages. Played on your own or in a team as a casual or a competitive activity.

Health Benefits

One of the most beneficial by-products of playing golf is the actual exercise an individual can achieve. This exercise comprises of walking on the golf course from hole to hole, the swinging of the golf club and the pulling or carrying of the golf club bag. Because golf involves a lot of walking (if you don’t use a buggy), playing once a week means that you are walking between four and eight miles, which is great for your heart and lungs. Walking offers a low impact workout with less stress on the joints than running or jogging. Research has shown that walking is the simplest yet most effective form of exercise, and (almost) anyone can participate in it. For those who need an extra incentive, why not attach a pedometer which measures the amount of steps you take and mileage covered. This might encourage you to “Abandon the Buggy”. Another incentive for walking the walk is that you have the opportunity to walk around some of the most beautiful golf courses on the Costa del Sol and take in their natural surroundings. Playing golf is also all about you. Being outdoors provides a change of venue and helps you get away from the normal treadmill (pardon the pun) of routine. A healthy change of environment also helps in reducing your stress levels and suddenly exercise becomes fun! It is important that we find sporting activities that we enjoy which, at the same time, improves our fitness — golf is the perfect answer.

Social Benefits

Golf is a social game, something you might not have considered if you have never set foot on a golf course. Many interactions and friendships are developed on the course during and after the game. It creates the opportunity to socialise with other players and friends. Meeting people and bonding with them also helps you to create a positive attitude about life which can lift up your spirits, your mental outlook and promote an overall feeling of well-being — and is therefore good for your general health. So, playing golf is not only physically good for you, it also releases a powerful natural mood enhancing drug called endorphin into your blood stream. As long as you don’t strive to play like Tiger Woods, just having a walk in the open air and enjoying a round of golf with your friends helps to make you feel better. If the sun is shining — even better! So what are you waiting for, grab your clubs, set your sights on a golf course and enjoy a day in the sun! After all, it is good for your physical and mental health. Ask any avid golfer… Before starting any physical exercise, make sure you are healthy enough by checking with your doctor. Featured Golf Course >

COURSE INFORMATION 18 holes, Par 72 5586m • 5325m • 4657m Handicap: Men 28, Ladies 36 Requirements: Soft spikes only Facilities: Pro Shop, Trollies, Buggies, Putting Green, Club Cleaning, Tennis, Lawn Bowls, Sauna, Clubhouse, Gymnasium, Snooker and Billards Room

The most recent acquisition to the Costa del Sol’s growing list of courses is Calanova Golf Club, located in the Mijas ‘Golf Valley.’ The course is immediately visible from the toll road although road access is via the A-7 highway at La Cala de Mijas. It measures 5,866 metres and complies with USGA regulations concerning course construction. Under the management of Iñigo Hernández and his team, golfers are assured of a warm welcome at the temporary clubhouse: comprising pro shop, changing rooms and restaurant. Work is already underway on the new clubhouse and the aim is to give it a real ‘ members feel ’. We had the opportunity to play the course recently and — due to the outlying terrain in the area — took a buggy. This is advisable as there are a couple of long walks between tees; most notably from the 16th to the 17th. The first is a dogleg left par 5 where a topped drive will end up in the lake. The second is a good hole — 350m from the yellow markers — but requiring a good second to make it to the green if the wind is blowing in your face. The third and fourth are downhill par 4s where accuracy is paramount from the tee, that is if you do not go for the green on the latter. The par 4 5th is worthy of its stroke 1 index. A decent drive will leave you with a mid iron to a two tiered green. Hole 6 has the obligatory water hazard waiting to catch any ball slightly to right of the green. This will become a firm favourite of ‘boleros’ in years to come! The ninth and tenth are both par 5s and require straight drives: to the right of the ninth apartments are being constructed and will no doubt catch a few wayward hits. The tenth is downhill all the way although, big hitters like myself might have problems trying to impart spin on their long second if they decide to go for the green: quite small, surrounded by bunkers and with a

What is meant by the Spanish Lifestyle? It doesn’t matter if you are an ex pat living here or a regular visitor. It’s the same for all. Lazy days or weekends recovering from work, relaxing on a beach, or lying by the pool. A game of golf with your mates and a slow beer afterwards, good food in fantastic restaurants washed down with fine wine or sangria, and smiles and laughter as the weather rarely depresses or gets one down. The choice of Golf course is so great that it’s hard to know where to start when it comes to talking about them. There are courses up and down the coast from Malaga to Alcadaisa and the standard of all are very high. They are well built, well maintained and well run. You can play the lovely 9 hole courses, or any one of the many courses set either on the coast or inland, a lot of which are set in rolling countryside; or you could drive down towards

70 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

Gibraltar and spoil yourself on one of the luxury courses. Costs of a round of Golf vary according to the Season, with high season being largely October to April when the courses are at their busiest. Booking in advance is recommended and you may book through our Golf Society, 4Play Golf, to make it easier for you. A Golf Buggy is also recommended, as the heat can make walking very tiring. Some of the courses are also fairly hilly, so it helps to keep the game going if the players are on buggies. A few courses include buggies in their Green Fee. During the year there are often deals to be had on certain courses and these may not be known to the general public. They will, however, be known to us and our 4 Play Golf Society. Again, contact us in advance.

bank over the back. From the 10th there is a long walk/ride to the next tee located under the toll road. The 11th is a flat par 4 with a dried up river running parallel to the green. The 12th is short at 250m and slightly dogleg to the left: either play a long iron off the tee or take the big guns out and have a shot at it. Playing the par 3 13th from one of the highest points of the course requires good club selection due to the wind factor. At 150m it could be anything from a short to a long iron depending on the breeze. The 14th is another dog leg left where one has to keep the ball in play from the tee. From there on the fairway widens for your second and approach shots. One of my favourite holes was the 15th where you have to aim for the left side of the fairway otherwise the ball will roll down the to the right. Your approach is then played to a long, narrow green sloping from left to right. The 16th is probably the only hole lacking maturity. Manuel mentioned that they had problems with downpours on the fairway whilst seeding. It is currently playable but the fairway is not up to the standard of the rest of the course. Again, another long drive/walk to the next tee: a par 3 from an elevated teeing position to a two tiered green. As long as you do not hit your ball into the lake to the right of the 18th this should be no more than a drive and a flick for most people. As you climb past the final green towards the clubhouse you can see where the driving range will be. All in all, it is a course where you are itching to a have another round. If you are familiar with La Cala courses then, you well know, it takes a couple of trips before you familiarise yourself with the terrain. The same goes for Calanova. Saying that, there are few blind tee shots and uphill climbs which should please most golfers. The greens were in superb condition given the short time they have been open.

Now that you have the urge to play, either as an ex pat or visitor, how do you go about it? Nothing could be easier!!! Join us at the 4 Play Golf Society. This Society is DIFFERENT from any others you may find on the Costa because, as well as being a Golf Society, it is a Social Golf Society. We will be having Golf Competitions on a regular basis, monthly or weekly, depending on demand. We will be using different courses and, when the numbers justify it, we will run mixed pairs competitions. Green fees will be at the best possible prices and sometimes we will be doing special offers such as 2 for 1 on the green fees, or with a 4 ball “3 pay 4 play”. We will have a VERY special competition. It will be run as a Stableford over 12 courses. Entrants must play at least 8 and the 8 best cards count. The winner gets a long weekend for 2 in Portugal — all expenses (except drink!!) included. It includes travel (you will be driven), accommodation, dinner, breakfast and golf. If the demand is there, we would organise weekend trips further afield

The Garden >

ENSURE A

Colourful Garden FOR Christmas Dealbata varieties of mimosa

One of the joys of having a property along the Costas is the pleasure of experiencing a colourful garden or apartment terrace at Christmas. A garden that motivates you to sit outside and enjoy the winter sun, and perhaps also to work more like spring than the middle of winter, even if you need to wear a light jumper.

By Clodagh and Dick Handscombe Holistic gardeners, authors and broadcasters who have enjoyed Christmas in Spain for twenty five years.

72 CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

There are five main things to be done to ensure that the garden is full of colour at Christmas. 1 Resist doing the major annual garden cut back in the autumn as you would have done in Northern Europe. The cut back is best done during the months of January and February. Earlier will mean few flowers in December. 2 Throughout the autumn prolong the flowering of existing perennials and shrubs by continuously deadheading as soon as flowers die and the cutting back of unsightly branches to stimulate new flowering shoots. If you have a dry autumn also continue to water. 3 Stimulate the early flowering of shrubs and trees that often do not flower until early to mid January. The three main requirements are to plant selected plants in south facing beds sheltered from cold winds, to keep the plants watered whether in garden beds or containers and to feed with a high potassium feed. Shelter can be provided by walls, glass screens, hedges or fences. In this way it is possible to encourage mimosas to flower a few weeks earlier than other gardens in the area. 4 If your garden is not already fully planted plant up some of the shrubs and trees we list below during October and November. With luck they will flower this year. 5 Purchase a selection of plants in flower just before Christmas whether a permanent resident or an absentee owner visiting for the festivities.

Things that must be done

TREES

The most reliable late flowering trees are: • The strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) has vivid red fruits to brighten the corner of a garden. The fruits are edible but in large quantities rather heavy on the stomach. We now prefer to leave them as a winter treat for wild birds, especially blackbirds. • The galan de noche that might be persuaded to pump out its heavy perfume on Christmas eve. • The dealbata and bon accueil varieties of mimosa are very spectacular with their network of branches covered in masses of yellow flowers. Cut branches look wonderful in a large vase and can last for a week or more. • Another tree to plant up this autumn, or next spring for the following Christmas, is the justice tree, which can be covered with large bunches of attractive white flowers throughout December and indeed much of the year. • And of course your almond tree might be in flower.

Bignonia

CLIMBING SHRUBS > Bougainvilleas, bignonias, blue and white solanums and the perfumed white and yellow varieties of jasmines can produce some of the most spectacular year end displays. If you are lucky both the blue and white plumbago can also be in flower although not at there best. During the autumn ensure that you trim them to shape, thus stimulating flower buds.

Lantana Hibiscus

coronarium chrysanthemum

Blue and white solanum

SHRUBS

Lantanas are reliable in most gardens and also hibiscus in warmer spots. Likewise roses if they have been deadheaded, watered and fed during the autumn. In a warm corner poinsettias up to two metres in height can be the perfect replacement for a garden Christmas tree. Unfortunately many of the millions of potted poinsettias sold around Christmas time are dwarf, consist of several cuttings in one pot very forced in hothouse conditions and are therefore often unsuitable for successfully transplanting into the garden in the spring. So don’t waste time trying to transplant these into the garden. Instead look out for the larger variety bred for planting in gardens.

PERENNIALS

The frutescens and coronarium chrysanthemums and euryops daisy give reliable colour in many gardens. If you are very lucky a few margeritas may still be in flower. A near neighbour has a wonderful display of naturalised violets that always brighten up her front steps in December. We obtained a few cuttings last spring to give colour to a raised bed of clivias until they flower for Easter. Red hot pocker aloes

< SUCCULENTS Several succulents can come into flower around Xmas notably the red hot pocker aloes and the aeoniums with their bright yellow spires of flowers and the various varieties of Xmas cacti. To prepare colourful displays of the latter pot up some large flower pots, say 25cm diameter, with eight or nine cuttings in mid summer or early autumn and bring on in the greenhouse or in a sunny naya. Aeonium

Pansies

< WINTER ANNUALS

Wallflower

The most reliable for colourful displays are the seasonal pansies, busy lizzies, stocks, wallowers and also petunias which are now available almost all the year round. If the autumn has been warm and wet you may be lucky to have self seeded nasturtiums brightening up the front of beds and cascading over walls. Also colourful portulacas can often be coaxed to flower through to the new year. Although strictly a perennial, forced primulas are often best treated as annuals and purchased fresh each autumn. They can create a vivid display especially if five or six are planted up in a large shallow container. OCTOBER & NOVEMBER 2009 73

CHRISTMAS BULBS > Our favorites include pots of specimen amaryllis and hyacinths, and in warm corners of rockeries anenomies, crocuses, minature daffodils and freesias. These bulbs need to be planted up during the next month. Naturally you can also wait until December and buy pots of bulbs just coming into flower. Ensure that bulbs in pots and in the garden are kept damp. Flamingo plant

SPECTACULAR PLANTS FOR PORCH AND COVERED TERRACE Brighten up the entry porch and covered terrace where you probably sit out to enjoy the low winter sun in the sun and your balconies and terraces. This a good time to indulge in a few spectacular plants. Perhaps a flamingo or orchid plant in full flower or a group of pointsettias potted up together in a large container. Cyclamens and azaleas are our favourites for north facing porches or shaded terraces. If you kept cyclamens from last year ensure that you now start watering lightly a couple of times a week. Always water from the base and never wet the corm. As the plants start to bud feed weekly with a high in potassium plant fertilizer. Azaleas should also be watered and fed throughout the autumn. Looked after properly all the above plants can give continuous colour for several months. If you are an absentee gardener coming out for Christmas and the New Year treat the mentioned plants as a Christmas expense. But when you depart don’t leave them to die but give them to your friends or neighbours. We hope that these ideas help stimulate colourful and perfumed Christmas gardens and balcony displays that go beyond the traditional front garden Christmas tree with lights and decorations. And of course Clodagh and Dick’s books Your Garden in Spain, Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain and Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain make ideal Christmas presents within the family and for friends and neighbours.

< Pets at Home

Adopting Adult Cats and Dogs Getting a new pet is never a quick or easy decision. How do you know what pet is right for you? First you must figure out what your options are. There are purebreds, strays, rescues, puppies, kittens, and adults. That’s right, adult pets (pets over two years old) need homes, too. Just as with any animal, you must try to research its history, temperament, and breed. You may not have thought about adopting an adult pet, but after reading this article, perhaps you will at least consider it as an option. Many people are afraid that adult pets will come with some behavioural problems. That may be true. Pets at animal shelters tend to be at a higher risk for issues like separation anxiety and food aggression (when an animal becomes defensively aggressive if you approach its food). However, not all pets have these difficult problems. The vast majority of dogs and cats are animal rescue shelters are not difficult or bad, they are simply lonely. The best way to make sure the animal will not have any behavioural problems is to learn its history (where possible) and spent time asking about its personality. Of course, all adult pets, just like adult humans, have personality quirks. Maybe the cat needs vigilant cleaning of the litter box, or the dog doesn’t get along well with other dogs. Any of these personality traits can develop and exist in a pet whether you owned it since it was little or welcomed it into the house as an older pet. A puppy or kitten is not exactly a blank slate. You can influence its manners and control its personality to a certain extent, but you will never be able to exactly dictate the type of animal it will become. Even the influence that you have comes only with hard work and vigilance. The thing is, when you have an older pet, at least you already know

its personality. There will be no surprises that arise, as can sometimes happen with a young pet. When you first get your tiny new puppy or kitten, you have no way of predicting whether it will be calm, neurotic, hyper, loud, friendly, or shy. You can guess based on its breed and the temperament of its parents, but there is no guarantee. When you adopt an adult pet, you will know straight away what kind of personality and energy level you going to be dealing with. On that note sometimes adult pets suit your lifestyle better than a puppy. Are you an older person? Do you have limited time? Just like kids, young pets need constant supervision and patience. They will need to be potty-trained and will interrupt your day constantly for crucial socialization. Puppies and kittens don’t come with manners; they don’t yet know the rules and roles of hierarchy and the human world. Their attention span is incredibly short, which can make them cute and frustrating at the same time. Also, the first year of life is often the most expensive with vaccinations, dewormers, check-ups, etc. On the other hand, with older adult pets you have to consider potential expensive geriatric issues like kidney disease and diabetes. However, these are issues that you would eventually deal with if you got a young pet anyway. One common misconception is that an adult pet will never bond with you or your family the way a young pet, who has spent its whole life with you would. It might take time for an adult animal to learn to trust, respect, and bond with you. However, it also takes a young animal some time to adjust to a life without its mother and littermates. You may be surprised to learn that often the pets with the strongest bond to their owner are adult rescues. They are so strongly attached to their owner that, as mentioned above, they can have more of a predisposition for separation anxiety. When you adopt a pet, you get the satisfaction that you have saved this animal from a life in a cage or no life at all. When you adopt an adult pet, you get the opportunity to show an animal love, an animal that may have suffered abandonment, abuse, or loneliness. Animals may not think the way humans do, but they still somehow manage to show us their appreciation for the new start that we give them. As always, when you are thinking about getting a pet, do your research. Consider the time and effort you are willing to put into a pet. When you look at different breeds, determine what personality quirks are you willing to tolerate. Are you willing to have a high-energy pet? What about a vocal, attention-needy, or protective pet? There is nothing wrong with wanting to adopt a kitten or puppy, and to enjoy those younger years. The benefits adopting an adult pet however, may be better suited to your lifestyle.

FOR ADOPTION ALGO

Algo is one of the many ver y sweet dogs who is not so lucky — yet! He was born around April 2008 and came to the animal shelter on the 2711-2008. He is a ver y loving young Silly Billy and so easy with all other dogs; he loves to be with us people and the little ones also. When you take him out for a walk he likes to hold his own lead… this is so sweet! We hope we can find him a loving home before the end of this year because he has now spent too much time in jail. Spooky Snacks

Set out a fiendish spread of appetizers when you host the annual Halloween costume party.

Avocado-Yogurt Dip with Cumin Scoop this creamy dip with pita chips and carrot, celery, and red bell pepper sticks. Prepare up to 8 hours in advance, and refrigerate in an airtight container. To further simplify your evening, use precut vegetables from the produce section.

breadstick dough, perfect for goblins, pretty princesses, superheroes, and even their parents. Prep: 15 min., Bake: 15 min., Stand: 5 min. Makes 12 servings  1 (11-oz.) can refrigerated breadstick dough  12 bun-length hot dogs  Wooden picks (optional)  Vegetable cooking spray 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Unroll breadstick dough, and separate into 12 strips at perforations. Gently stretch each strip to a length of 20cm. 2. Wrap 1 dough strip lengthwise around each hot dog. Secure with wooden picks, if necessary. Coat lightly with cooking spray. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet. 3. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes. (If using wooden picks, remove before serving.)

Stir together first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; add eggs, and let stand 1 hour. Remove and drain on paper towels. Peel eggs to reveal pattern on whites. Cut eggs in half lengthwise; carefully remove yolks. Mash yolks; stir in potato flakes and next 5 ingredients until blended. Spoon the yolk mixture evenly into egg white halves. Attach 2 halves, gently pressing together stuffed sides.

Goat Cheese, Roasted Garlic & Tomato Croutes Roasting the garlic and the tomatoes is the key to flavour in this savory appetizer. After the garlic is roasted, you combine the pulp with the goat cheese, spread it on the toasted baguette slices, and top with tomato wedges.

Deviled Green Goblin Eggs

A GUIDE TO THE BEST RESTAURANTS ON THE COAST

Black-and-White Caramel Apples Create a dramatic costume for your apples using both white and semisweet chocolate.  5 Apples  50 unwrapped caramels  White Chocolate  Semisweet dark chocolate Rinse and dry 5 apples. Insert a popsicle stick halfway into the stem end of each apple. Line a baking sheet with plain parchment paper or wax paper that has been generously coated with butter. In a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, combine about 50 pieces unwrapped soft caramels and 2 tablespoons water. Stir frequently until melted and smooth. Holding the stick, dip each apple one at a time into the caramel about three-quarters of the way. Swirl to coat evenly. Hold stem side up and use a knife to scrape excess caramel off the bottom of apple back into bowl. Place apples on the parchment paper or buttered waxed paper and refrigerate until caramel is firm, about 5 minutes. Return pan of water to a boil; remove from heat. Place 10 ounces white chocolate in another bowl and set over pan. Stir frequently until chocolate is melted and smooth. Dip the bottom half of each apple in the white chocolate, turning to coat evenly. Hold stem side up and use a knife to scrape excess white chocolate off bottom of apple and back into bowl. Place each coated apple on the parchment paper or buttered waxed paper and refrigerate until chocolate is slightly set, about 10 minutes. Using a fork, drizzle 4 ounces melted semisweet chocolate on all sides. Refrigerate until chocolate is firm, about 15 minutes.

Focus on … Saffron

This delicate, fragrant spice is obtained from the bright red/orange stigma of the saffron crocus flower. Its exorbitant price tag is easily justified by its low yield — it takes about 200,000 stigmas to make a single kilo of saffron. Around 70% of the world’s saffron used to come from Spain, in particular La Mancha. These days saffron floods the world from the Middle East and the saffron growers in Spain struggle to survive the competition. The Moors brought saffron to Spain over a thousand years ago, and its use has never been so popular. It’s the gold of the spices, expensive and sought after and therefore open to corruption. The rich colour has a great aesthetic value for your cooking and the taste is unbeatable Buying Saffron Only a small pinch of saffron is necessary to adequately flavour a dish. For an authentic flavour, avoid buying powdered saffron as the likelihood of it being mixed with artificial colourings is high unless sourced from a trusted supplier. When buying powder it should be a dark/red orange colour, never yellow. How to Cook Saffron is the defining ingredient in some of the Continent’s most celebrated dishes —Spain’s paella, the bouillabaisse of Provence, risotto milanese — and is essential to the cuisines of India, Morocco, and Iran. It has also been coveted throughout history as a dye, a perfume, and a medicine. Saffron is generally steeped in milk, water or stock before using and then added to the liquid towards the end of cooking.

Costa del Sol Voice COMMUNITY AND CHARITY NEWS ALONG THE COAST Promoting Positive People on the Costa By David Jeffers Mairs Is anyone else glad to see the back of the intense heat we’ve been experiencing over the last six weeks or so? Don’t get me wrong, I love the sunshine — the reason that I, and so many others, are here in the first place — but “everything in degree” as they say. It’s so uncomfortable stepping out of the shower and before you’ve had the chance to get dressed, you’re wet again. Anyway, less of the complaining… I’ve restarted working, after the August slow down, on a bunch of new songs for the next CD and hope to have completed same by the end of the year. Will keep you posted on progress. Here’s another group of “Ordinary people doing extraordinary things”.

RESTAURANTE LOS NARANJOS RAISE €5,577 IN AID OF CUDECA HOSPICE

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

The restaurant Los Naranjos in Mijas Pueblo, held a dinner and raffle in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice on Saturday 22nd August. It was an extremely successful evening and very well attended by locals and friends of Cudeca raising a grand total of €5,577 for the Cudeca Hospice! It was fantastic to see the local community, coming together, to make the night so enjoyable. Entertainment was provided by Flashback, and performances by Rob Stevens and the Mijas Babes (Christine, Helen, Jackie, Kay and Pat) who put a lot of effort in a tribute to the Nolan Sisters and Abba, as well as the local Mijas Salsa dancers group from the Open University. Congratulations to you all in raising such an impressive amount. Very well done and continued success to The Restaurant Los Naranjos.

PERFECT WEDDING EXPO Another upcoming event to watch for is the English speaking Wedding Exhibition on November the 14th and 15th at the Palacio de la Paz in Fuengirola. Not to be missed if there’s wedding bells in the air, though it promises to be a great day out for those who don’t. There’s live music from great bands, individual musicians and solo singers; Harley Davidson bikes and classic cars. That’ll keep me happily occupied while my wife picks that new Christmas outfit she’s threatening to buy. Looking forward to seeing you there. David
