EDITORIAL As another year draws to a close, any distractions from ongoing pandemic protocols are warmly welcome. Especially when related to the resilient focal point and embracing heart of our evolving lifestyles: the home. As we have noted here before, homes have become an even more integral cornerstone of people’s everyday lives over the past nearly two years, dominating our attention as we upgrade and adapt them in tune with our new physical and emotional needs. To that end, many of us have been keenly following news of latest trends and innovations in home design and décor, not only to make our homes more functional but also more aesthetically appealing. The latest popular trend that has been gaining a growing number of adepts in 2021 – following (in recent years) Denmark’s “hygge” and Sweden’s “lagom”, plus the evergreen favourite “feng shui”, of course – is “japandi”. Japandi is a hybrid interior design trend that combines the elegant aesthetics of Japanese minimalism and the flair of rustic Scandinavian simplicity – encompassing furniture, tableware and interior spaces that are highlighted by clean lines, neutral tones, organic functionality, natural textures and impeccable finishes. Meanwhile, Dulux have been especially quick off mark this year, presenting their “Colour of the Year” for 2022 in September, and leaving Pantone’s own eagerly awaited annual announcement (presumably now envisaged for December) for our next issue. “After a spell of feeling shut in,” declared Dulux, “we now find ourselves craving expansion. We feel drawn to the great outdoors and the open air. And we long for a fresh approach and a new start. So, here it is. “Bright Skies is our Colour of the Year 2022, and the breath of fresh air that you’ve been waiting for. A light, airy and optimistic shade that reflects 8

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

the limitless skies around us. And alongside its four supporting palettes – Workshop, Greenhouse, Studio and Salon – it will help you look up and imagine a fresh new look in your home.” While on the colour theme, arguably even more interesting, practical and relevant is the news from Purdue University in Indiana, where a team of engineers has created an ultra-white paint that Guinness has formally recognised as a world record for the whitest ever made. The project was devised and launched as a means to curb climate change by developing a paint that would be able to cool down buildings and subsequently reduce the need for air conditioning. As team leader Xiulin Ruan explained, “When we started this project about seven years ago, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind. If you were to use this paint to cover a roof area of about 1,000 square feet (93 square metres), we estimate that you could get a cooling power of 10 kilowatts. That’s more powerful than the central air conditioners used by most houses.” So, on that positive note – which is particularly timely as world leaders gather in Glasgow in November for the United Nations Climate Change Conference – we prepare to say adios to this tumultuous year by recalling another trend from the pre-COVID era. Or, more accurately, an informal motto, Iceland’s “þetta reddast”, which essentially means that everything will work out okay in the end. As Christmas is around the corner, we have selected some inspirational décor ideas for your home (and possible gifts), and we wish everyone a richly relaxing festive season and a significantly less disruptive 2022. BEDROOMS THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF

Transforming your bedroom into a haven requires you to take a few important factors into consideration… Of course, you want your bedroom to be stylish but it must also be functional, and ultimately relaxing. Simplicity is key, so a calming colour palette is always recommended – and avoid busy patterns. Keeping surfaces clear and the room orderly requires convenient cabinetry and storage systems. Good lighting to create a relaxing ambience and plenty of softness through textiles both help create a soothing effect. Buying a mattress that supports your body type and the particular way you sleep can be a gamechanger, so it is well worth doing some in-depth research in this area and making the investment – it can truly change your life!

Homehagen’s salmon pink cotton percale is woven from 100 per cent organic and Oeko-Tex certified cotton with a 310 thread count and a delightful dark orange border. The cotton has been given a gentle soft wash that gives a beautiful matte finish and is soft against the skin (www.homehagen.dk). 10

LIVING ROOMS ...

INSPO FOR YOUR LIVING ROOM We are entering the winter months and this is when our living room takes precedence. As we retire from our patio to the warmth of the living room, we often realise that perhaps this area of our home, where we have planned to entertain family and guests over Christmas, could be in need of an update. There are many adjustments you can make, such as a feature wall (check out our wallpaper section for inspiration in this area) or go “all-in” and invest in a new sofa, statement chair or coffee table. Guests receive an overall impression of your style in the living room, so make it representative of YOUR distinctive taste and be proud to showcase it…

Where does your passion for interior design come from? It comes from an innate desire to make a positive change in the world. Design is about people, and about the change they want to create. Every person is a unique universe, so every project brings something new. This is another reason why I love design so much, because you can visually and sensorially create bespoke spaces for people to enjoy, enhancing their quality of life and/or business. I am passionate about creating a mesmerising interplay between materials, textures, tones, shapes and dimensions, as this is what makes a space special and gives it that indefinable character, regardless of the stylistic genre or whether the design is exuberant or subdued. We always aim to build upon the architectural characteristics of a property. How do you approach a new project? It’s very important to have a good and detailed briefing from the client in order to successfully achieve a creative, beautiful and functional design. We have quite a few briefings with our clients in order to grasp their vision and then we start at the drawing board. Communication is key and having a good rapport with our clients is essential. We then have brainstorming meetings with the team and do extensive research based on the brief, and finally 32

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

start putting together the concept and design for our clients to visualise. Once all has been approved by our clients, we start with the execution of the project, and that involves our project management team, who ensure all is ordered according to the approved project. We manage all aspects and liaison with our suppliers, manufacturers and craftsmen, from the outset until completion, thus offering a turn-key service. How would you describe your design style? For me, design is a sensory experience, so it can never be a repeated “standard” process but should instead reflect those elements that make that room, home or commercial venue different from all others. My work is to highlight this while offering practical solutions and creating a beautiful setting, and I use the light, dimensions, materials and architectural details as my ingredients. I like creating spaces that are stylish and elegant, that feel rich in texture and that combine pieces that juxtapose each other yet co-live effortlessly. I like neutrals and also enjoy making a bold statement. I love designing pieces to measure and carefully selecting materials, which is a very big part of design for me. I enjoy playing with lighting and natural elements as they can bring so much life to a space.

At the end of the day, it’s really about the project and what the client brief requires. Overall I would say my design style is elegant-contemporary meets organic-eclectic.

it’s finished. So it’s important to have a good connection with your designer and professional team who will be handling the project, for a pleasant and successful experience and a great outcome.

Do you ever struggle to find inspiration – and where do you ultimately obtain your inspiration from? I think every creative person feels like that sometimes. I usually give it some time until I’m feeling the inspirational breakthrough again. I focus on something less creative to then get my energy back. But most of the time you have to be creative on demand, and staying self-motivated is super important as there are organisational deadlines that must be met. I also get inspired by design books, nature, conversation, travel…

In conclusion... The places we spend the most time in, which are usually the home, workplace or commercial venue, should add to the quality of our lives. Design is so special because it allows us to produce something beautiful that transcends mere visual attractiveness and makes us feel good. This is the ultimate goal I strive for when designing interior and outdoor areas – creating that special spot that brings out the best in you.

What tips do you have for someone who wants to set about redesigning their home? Having a plan that is thought-through is essential, especially if you are looking to design a whole project. Think long-term! Understand what is important to you and don’t compromise on that. Find a designer who really understands your vision, as they will co-create with you and sometimes a project can be six months or even years before

OUTDOOR LIVING ...

LOVING LIFE OUTDOORS As we live in southern Europe and are lucky enough to have clement weather almost all year round, our outdoor furniture is extremely important. It must of course be weather resistant but also stylish. The relatively recent trend in melding the indoors with the outdoors has really taken off and shows no sign of changing anytime soon – and there is good reason for this. Having a consistent décor style running throughout the home (inside and out) makes it feel more harmonious and cohesive. Low and deep-seated sofas and chairs have become especially popular, offering extra comfort and luxurious lounging. Natural colour palettes and raw materials have also made a huge comeback, as they are ideal for blending outdoor furniture into the natural environment. Don’t be afraid to put some character into your outdoor space… consider, for example, a hanging chair or hammock, a large pouf, a cosy outdoor rug, some fun lighting or a firepit that you can all gather around while enjoying winter evenings out in your garden.

Opposite Page North By North are specialists in boho bamboo furniture. This three-seater sofa is adorned with high-quality, hard-wearing cushions (available in three other colours) which are treated to prevent UV damage and to repel water and dirt. Shown here with their coffee table, this set is part of a wider range and can be combined with other sofas and armchairs – suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Each piece of furniture is made from 100 per cent natural materials and has been assembled in production. Buy online at www.northbynorth.com 34

DINING IN ...

DINING IN OVER THE WINTER SEASON

With Christmas coming up, you might be thinking of buying a new dining set to cater for guests during the festive season. The dining table has to take on a lot of wear and tear, so invest wisely and it will be more long-lasting. Make sure you buy a table that fits the dimensions of the room and will not be too small and look drowned-out, but also not so large that you cannot even walk around it when diners are seated. The dining table is often also used as a work desk, so if this is the case a hardwearing tabletop is even more important to avoid scratches from laptops and desktop organisers as well as pen indentations. The dining table unites friends and family as they rejoice together sharing food and drinks so it holds a great deal of importance in the home.

LIGHTING ...

BRIGHTENING UP THE WINTER Now we have entered the winter months and daylight hours are reduced, lighting in the home comes even more to the fore. When choosing lamps for your home, don’t rely on just one unit to illuminate an entire room. Instead, layer the lighting so that each part of the room has carefully thought-out pockets of light – which is more atmospheric and practical. Just one single lamp can tend to be too glaring, and usually will be unable to fill the room with the amount of light required. Whether you want to go for minimalist lighting to offer functionality over decoration, or go all-out on a flamboyant chandelier, your lighting is key to creating a welcoming ambience when you enter the room, as well as for your outdoor areas.

Smart home specialists Illusion joined other top architecture, interior design and art companies presenting cutting-edge products and projects at the inaugural edition of Design Week Marbella. Conceived as a meeting point, the exhibition was a resounding success in terms of both public attendance and professional participation. During the week, dozens of internationally renowned experts showcasing exclusive projects, as well as more than 350 participating brands, were complemented by over 20 informative talks and conferences – transforming Marbella into the capital of international design. Illusion had the opportunity, and pleasure, of collaborating with various premier stands at the exhibition. One highlight was Bang & Olufsen Marbella’s Beoliving space, which was awarded the top award for “Best Interior Design Project”, showcasing a sophisticated and meticulous design by Pedro Peña that created an environment characterised by warm lighting and exceptional sound, with special nuances that awakened the five senses. Providing an attractive recreational space where exhibitors and visitors could meet over a glass of wine, 3Bar brought together hundreds of people who were able to share valuable time with partners, colleagues and friends, while also discovering the harmony that nature transmits – thanks to the choice of vegetation as a key feature of Inhabit Architects’ fabulous design concept. This, together with great sound, cosy lighting and excellent quality lunch options thanks to Barbulla, enabled them to secure the award as “Best Free Construction Project”. 100

An ideal ambience for meetings, exhibition presentations and dialogue was created by Juan Antonio Fernandez with the Apymespa space, where elegance and simplicity were the main protagonists. At FS Experience, Francisco Segarra’s design and riddles provided a synonym for unpredictability, with a touch of subtle magic thanks to control systems that supported and outlined a wonderfully non-conventional pattern. In Adarve’s outdoor spaces, the audio system was concealed between vegetation, while the design chosen by Beatriz Perlac added an insightful and celebratory note to the ensemble. Meanwhile, Illusion was involved in a collaborative project with Lutron that helped promote sustainability in the sector: “Wellness Real Estate in the Residential Sector”, presented by Pablo Muñoz Hernandez, a specialist and consultant in sustainability and architectural health, and co-founder and CEO of Espacios Evalore. This presentation highlighted an architectural concept of housing where sustainability, energy efficiency and respect for the environment are paramount in a design that positions the individual as the central element. WORKING FROM HOME There is a strong chance that, if you didn’t have a home office a couple of years ago, you do now. The pandemic has made everyone appreciate the importance of setting up a suitable workspace within the home, with many people no doubt thinking, “Why didn’t I do this before?”. If the dining table has been working overtime to serve as a desk, perhaps it’s time to carve out your own little workspace that works best for you – whether it’s in a bedroom or an enclave in the living room, or at the end of a hallway (preferably with a window in front of it). Desks with drawers are the best option so you have built-in storage solutions to keep your area clear of clutter. An ergonomic chair that can be adjusted to your exact seating requirements is also highly recommended, and you need to protect your eyes from glare with an adjustable table lamp (light on your face is also good for video calling!). Finally, beautify your space with a plant or an attractive paperweight. In addition to being convenient and comfortable, your workspace should also represent your personality and help you become inspired.

FABRIC FANTASTIC The world of fabrics can be mind-boggling, with different materials serving different purposes. Cushions make a living room cosy and welcoming, jazz-up a tired sofa or chair economically and can be quite transformational – a little can go a long way. Good-quality fabric for curtains will immediately make the room look refined and elegant, especially if you hang your curtains high – adding drama from ceiling to floor. MISIA PERSONIFYING GLAMOROUS LUXURY INSPIRED BY TRAVELS Interview with Florence Vermelle (Artistic Director)

What prompted the group to set up MISIA? The MISIA brand was born out of the desire to have the freedom to create a new, more intimate genre of luxury. The desire to offer a brand with exacting taste that meets increasingly high aspirations and specifications. A brand dedicated to all the influential people in the world of decoration. True to the standards of French sophistication, the brand decided to tap into the free and avant-garde world of the twenties: joyful and creative, provocative and daring, glamorous and refined. This is the philosophy and common thread that has run through the project from its inception. Tell us about some of the key features and special aspects of MISIA. MISIA pays special attention to the provenance of its materials and how its fabrics are made. Our weavers are all from Europe and selected with the utmost care, with the objective of offering the highest quality and the best service. In choosing to associate with partners from India, the brand is also able to celebrate and support one of the country’s most ancient skills: producing precious silks. MISIA is a setting, a seductive brand. A resolutely modern French brand. Both classic and iconoclastic in its approach, it resembles the beauties of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Florence Vermelle (Artistic Director)

One of MISIA’s creative highlights in 2021 was the launch of “French Riviera”. How would you define this collection? It is a tribute to this most stylish of coastlines: coated voiles, iridescent faux-leathers and silks shot with gold warm your face with their rays. At the heart of the collection, large floral or plant motifs exude their heady perfumes of lavender or oleander with a simple crumple. The cotton and linen textures billow at windows, like a sail off the Croisette. The collection represents an adventure, both luxurious and understated, like the mythical hotels of the Côte d’Azur but also luminous and pastel like its summer skies, the façades of cliffside villages and the crystal-clear waters of creeks under the Riviera sun. In conclusion... The next collection for 2022 has been created in collaboration with a designer, and we will also have a new outdoor collection. www.misia-paris.com

TURNING YOUR BATHROOM INTO A SPA Often, the bathroom is the last room to be considered when redesigning your home, but a few little tweaks to its design can go a long way. For example, changing the washbasin or faucets might be all your bathroom needs to give the overall look a modern update. If you want to turn your bathroom into the ultimate spa experience, the bathroom sector has plenty to offer, with hi-tech rain showers, jacuzzi bathtubs and toilets that illuminate and even give you a wash. Here are some ideas…

THE IMPORTANCE OF RUGS Some would argue that rugs are essential accessories for the home as they can play various useful roles to enhance your living spaces. They blend harmoniously into a room, offering warmth underfoot and a welcoming ambience without disturbing the space’s overall interior design. They can also make a bold statement, taking the limelight with a vivid colour or bold pattern. In addition, rugs not only offer a warming design feature but also an acoustic aspect, helping to absorb echoes in a room as well as dulling the sound of footsteps. AT L AS G RO U P OPEN NEW OFFICE IN SEVILLA Article supplied by Atlas Group

While their presence in the Costa del Sol property market continues to experience considerable growth, Estepona-based construction company Atlas Group have set their sights on the wider Andalucía region and opened a new office in Sevilla. Starting with a single, luxury villa project, the team brought their expertise and dedication to the new build, constructing the property hand in hand with Mytaki Architects. Featuring a contemporary and cubist design, the villa has four bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom, and a large garden overlooking golf fairways, plus an infinity swimming pool. The home also has a spacious basement with games and play areas, a gym and underground parking. 144

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

Mike Gregory, General Director at Atlas Group, said, “When we were presented with the opportunity to build a luxury property in Sevilla, we were excited to further extend our expertise outside of the Costa del Sol. Working closely with the architects and project managing the build has ensured the property was completed to our typical high standards. Basing a team from Atlas Group in Sevilla has also naturally extended our portfolio there, and we have several more projects in the pipeline.”

Due to the excellent work shown by Atlas Group on the first villa, the company are now in the process of building a further two properties in the Montequinto district, also located frontline to a golf course, with architects T10 and CM4. One of the properties is more complex in construction, as there is an existing villa which will be connected to a large extension of 1,000 square metres to house a spa area with sauna and gym, and underground parking. The engineering and technical precision required to build the extension and underground parking, as well as connect it with the existing property, is paramount. One of the villas will house an incredible basketball court within the basement, which has to be specially modified to allow for increased height to play. In addition to the three villas in the Montequinto area, builds of several townhouses in the busy centre of Los Remedios are going ahead. Due to the central location, the logistics and planning for this project is extremely important, and the basements require considerable technical knowledge.

The basements are located at the roadside, and the complexity of the excavation requires the skill and knowledge of an experienced construction company, one of the reasons Atlas Group was chosen for this project. “These projects demonstrate our skillset and overall competence for a range of builds, and we look forward to continuing our presence in the Sevilla market and in the wider Andalucía region,” added Mike Gregory. Additional projects in Sevilla also include two apartment blocks for student housing and, from Atlas Group’s new Sevilla headquarters, the team are working on builds in Sanlucar de Barrameda and Puerto de Santa María.

A cutting-edge tourism project has been launched in Granada with the objective of changing current concepts of luxury accommodation for travellers who want to disconnect from the outside world. District Hive is a capsule hotel (or “podtel”) located in the Gorafe desert area and described as the “first 100 per cent self-sufficient and transportable module that can be deployed on any terrain, even where construction is not possible”. Created by Spanish studio MOHO Arquitectos, it has been designed from a multi-disciplinary perspective and with a commitment to tourism that is sustainable, ecological and responsible. This, according to the studio, is achieved by “accessing nature without leaving a trace”. To that end, the impact “is zero at an environmental level, as no local resource is consumed and, once removed, the location returns to its original state”. This eco-hotel is capable of generating its own water from the air and its electricity needs from solar energy (enough to power the capsule for four days without sun). It also has its own sewage management system, transforming waste into ash, with wastewater filtered through two filtering processes so that it can be used for irrigation. “The module’s total autonomy means that common and complementary services are not necessary, thus optimising resources and guaranteeing a reduction in the carbon footprint.” The podtel is a fully industrialised construction that is offered in a finished state, transported to the site and ready for use within hours. It is raised above the ground, and does not require a foundation or any type of channeling, pipes or sanitation. The support system comprises six legs that rest on the ground “like a spaceship”. The 35 square metre building is divided into several spaces, with a bathroom, kitchen-living-dining room, bedroom (double bed and two hidden singles), multi-functional modular wardrobes and shelves and small utility room (where all the technical equipment is located). It also has an open terrace for stargazing, while all the furniture, storage spaces, walls and finishes have been designed with the aim of providing a combination of luxury and cosy warmth. Automation and the use of latest technologies are key features of the capsule’s development. A mobile app controls all the devices and offers information on remaining energy levels, solar production, temperature, water quality and water production. The app also controls door openings, the interior aroma, lighting, sound, TV, shopping for food and drink on demand, and the temperature. The capsule’s artificial intelligence (known as “Hivemind”) is intuitive and set up “to assist guests throughout their stay to ensure a high-tech, connected experience as they relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery in absolute privacy”. District Hive has been designed and conceived as part of the “Colonia Podtel” concept of high-end autonomous luxury accommodation that is planned to be installed in different parts of the world, “all of them remote and with the most spectacular views and environments”. www.districthive.com Photos by Dani Guindo

THE END OF THE YEAR IS NIGH

BY ALIA BABAPULLE Alia Babapulle. Interior and Exterior Designer. Tel. (+34) 616 670 975 / aliabdesigns@live.co.uk

Not in a bad way but because this tumultuous year, in so many ways, is drawing to a close. It is also the last time I will be writing for Home & Lifestyle magazine. I have had a lot of fun writing about everything to do with gardening in general and I hope you have enjoyed my articles. The end of the year is always about Christmas and the New Year, and the seasonal aspects of your gardening plan remain the same.... Take stock. What do you like together and what not? Do things need to be moved? Should they be replanted, as they are not doing well where they are? Cut back any old branches, clear up pots, spread good mulch and thin out your spaces. Are you pleased with the general aspect of your garden or terrace? If not, make a note of what you have there and write down the plants you would like to change. Speak to your local garden centre. Spain can have relatively extreme weather here in the south. It’s quite hot in summer and wet in winter, so take that into consideration. But, apart from all that, have fun. Now to décor... If you have a mantelpiece, go for it and decorate in a big way. Use lots of greenery from your garden or found on walks. Look for lovely pieces of wood. You can spray them in traditional colours or go in a different direction and use luminous paints. With lots of candles in the design, it can look spectacular. Fairy lights threaded through a table decoration (make sure the wire is taped down securely to the floor so no-one has an accident) – with candles, lovely glasses, pretty plates and cutlery, large napkins tied with raffia and pieces of cinnamon stuck into them – give off a very Christmasy feel. 148

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

Gardens are full of surprises so raid them now. Let wood dry off and then in December go to work. Children love to help, so let them. Wreaths on the front door can also be made from pieces from your garden, together with old glass baubles stuck and glued to them. In short, the sky’s the limit. Stay safe, enjoy your gardens and remember that, like children, they never stop growing.

The Mosh Group, which comprises Mosh Fun Kitchen, Playa Padre, Momento and Nido Estepona, has made another addition to its list of popular hotspots, with the new private members club Motel Particulier. Situated in the Polígono Industrial (industrial estate) in Nueva Andalucía’s La Campana area, the location may surprise you – and, indeed, the entrance is quite unassuming – but that is the whole point. This venue is for a sophisticated clientele who want to enjoy a night out and appreciate high-quality gastronomy, stylish decoration, good music and, last but not least, privacy. N.B.: If you like to broadcast your life across social media, this venue is not for you, as photos are strictly forbidden. When you enter Motel Particulier you are hit with a sea of deep red from the walls to the carpet and beyond. In the main lounge, you cannot fail to be impressed by the luxuriant décor. Well-known Sevilla architect Manuel Burgos carried out the design project and all aspects have been well thought-out to the finest detail. There are various references to French décor, with stainedglass windows depicting characters from the French bourgeoisie, while the use of fringes that hang from the ceiling and on the lampshades provides an art-deco feel. The resplendent lounge comprises dining tables with comfortable club chairs, a DJ stage, a magnificent island bar and, behind that, a large open kitchen. Upstairs there are two intimate and beautifully designed rooms that can be hired for private parties, with one having its very own bar and private DJ booth. Service is extremely important to Motel Particulier, with waiters dressed in delightful uniforms and poised like springs to attend to your every need, without being overbearing. You immediately get the sensation that you have entered a special place – the staff are upbeat and friendly and seem excited about where they work – and so they should as it is a truly exceptional venue. 152

Created by Argentinian chef Franco Franceschini, the menu offers a varied array of exquisite French-inspired dishes such as bouillabaisse, Marennes D’Oleron oysters, turbot with Périgord sauce, tartare de boeuf and pigeon served with salsify (a type of turnip) plus more, with four homemade and indulgent desserts to top-off the gastronomic adventure. There is an impressive selection of wines on offer including Pouilly Fumé, PulignyMontrachet 1er Cru, Vega Sicilia Único and Sassicaia, to name but a few. It must be stressed that “Joe Public” cannot enter Motel Particulier: it is necessary to become a member or be invited by one and, as you would expect, there is a strict dress code. Already they have managed to accumulate an impressive membership that encompasses all ages. There is live entertainment every night and you can enjoy the Motel Particulier experience until almost dawn (check opening times on their social media). Pol. Ind. M AST E RS OF WINE BY AJ LINN

The essential prerequisites for anyone wanting to work in the wine trade in the US are memberships of the Guild of Sommeliers and Court of Master Sommeliers. In the UK no qualifications are ordinarily required, but they can be of help. The Institute of Masters of Wine (“MW”) is Britain’s top title and is open to citizens of every country. As an observer of, and spasmodic participant in, the trade, I have frequently felt a certain schadenfreude as friends weigh up the pros and cons of taking the MW exam. While achieving this very prestigious title is about as meritorious as it is possible to go in the wine business, to take the exam and fail is not something that anyone would want to be shouted to the four winds. Clearly the examination is very difficult, and the number of passes handed out annually can be counted on the fingers of two hands. So which is the best option: to take the exam or to ignore it? It has been reckoned that the total cost of studying for the extended course, taking into account the entrance fee, costs around €12,000, to which must be added the not inconsiderable expenditure of purchasing the wines for tasting practice. Of course, if you are in the biz, this may not be such a consideration, but for the private individual it is a serious additional cost. And then there is the time involved to do the actual tastings. Not just anyone can apply. There are the obligatory initial application procedures, and adding everything up can put the entire exercise out of the financial reach of ordinary mortals. Just to stake a claim the requirements are: a tasting paper, two essays, three further theses, and a 6,000 to 10,000-word research paper on a topic of the applicant’s choice. And they must allow many months for doing all this before even being accepted for the main MW exam! Do you really want to go on? Pre-1983, only UK-based candidates could apply, and they had to be winemakers, consultants, media and/or employed in the trade. Now the qualification is worldwide, and there were even three Chinese at the last count. Each student has a personal mentor, so he or she is not entirely on their own. Indeed, the Institute of Masters of Wine emphasises that its goal is not to make achieving the title difficult, but rather to make sure that only those who will promote wine on every level internationally can use the coveted initials after their name. 154

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

There are 460 in total, a number that in recent years has kept pretty stable, as the new entrants are balanced by others leaving the trade or dying off. Spain has seven MWs, although not all are of Spanish nationality – and one, Chilean-born Pancho Campo, handed back his title. Not everyone believes that qualifications such as Master Sommelier and Master of Wine have any real merit. If only by virtue of their cost most of those working in restaurants are excluded. However much a top sommelier may earn, it will seldom be enough to give him or her the luxury of dedicating the money and the time over an extended period to study for the exam and to sit it. The obvious conclusion therefore is that many sommeliers deserve the title and would undoubtedly qualify academically for it – but the opportunity is denied them by their financial situation and work commitments. Hardly fair, but obtaining this professional qualification and its like, while appearing to be great ideas at first sight, over time are shown to be impractical for the very people for whom they were originally introduced.

Fine Dining: Sidrería Usategui in Marbella This is a little piece of the Basque Country on the Costa del Sol. It is one of the few “asadors” (grill houses) actually owned by Basques, and the title “sidrería” (cider house) is rather misleading. Cider typically comes from Asturias and, although the huge wooden vats that dominate the dining room never tire of dispatching the cloudy liquid, meat is the star turn. The selection is the best in town for price/quality, and customers can choose their own cuts. The fish is excellent, and typical regional dishes such as fabada, kokotxas and mollejas are unique in Marbella. There is a short wine list, the price is around €35 per person plus wine, and there are set menus. El Mirador, Edif. El Palomar, Marbella Open lunch and dinner Tel. (+34) 952 827 317

Rovaniemi is best known as the “home” of Santa Claus, but its appeal extends far beyond providing an enchanting world of wonderment for families with young (and not so young) children. For older winter travellers seeking new experiences, the capital of Lapland is also an excellent base to explore the Arctic Circle, be dazzled by the Northern Lights and spend nights under the stars (appropriately rugged up, of course) in lodgings committed to sustainability. In short, Rovaniemi is an urban city surrounded by arctic nature, with traditional Lappish culture enhanced by modern tourist amenities. But first to Santa Claus… A month before Christmas, he declares the festive season open in Santa Claus Village, while later (on 23 December) he officially departs on his mission to hand out gifts to children around the world. During the rest of the year, he can be visited every day in the village, located right on the Arctic Circle. According to Visit Rovaniemi, Santa Claus’s original home is in the “mysterious” Korvatunturi (“Ear Fell”) in Finnish Lapland. As the exact location is “a secret only known to a chosen few”, he decided to establish an office in Rovaniemi in 1985. In 2010, Rovaniemi received the status of “Official Hometown of Santa Claus”. Today, Santa Claus Village is Lapland’s best-known attraction and a resort in its own right, with companies offering diverse activities, and dozens of shops, restaurants and cafés. Visitors can enjoy husky and reindeer rides, snowmobile tours, designer items and souvenirs, ice and snow constructions, an igloo hotel and holiday village accommodation. In addition, Rovaniemi is one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights. Also known as Aurora Borealis, they are visible on 150 nights a year in Finnish Lapland. In Rovaniemi, the astral show can be spotted in and around the city from late August until early April. According to Sámi folklore, the Auroras are caused by a fox running over the fields of Lapland, whipping up snow with its tail and sending sparks up to

the northern sky. The sparks form a colourful arc of fire that lights up the dark landscape. The Finnish name for the Northern Lights, “revontulet” (“fox fire”), derives from this myth. As for the scientific explanation… the Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with each other on entering the earth’s atmosphere. This results in emissions of various colours of light – with green being the most common, although red, pink, violet, yellow and blue can also be spotted at times. Eco Lodge on the Arctic Circle One of the holiday destinations featured in the second season of the Netflix series “The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals” is Rovaniemi – or specifically Ollero Eco Lodge. This family-owned, environmentally friendly cottage retreat by the Ounasjoki river on the Arctic Circle is where four siblings, Aaro, Arttu, Amalia and Anni, used to spend their childhood holidays and weekends. Now they offer guests a taste of Finland’s ecological lifestyle and adventure travel, complete with icy dips in a frozen lake and a glass igloo – all in a private natural setting. Awarded Visit FInland’s “Sustainable Travel Finland” label, Ollero Eco Lodge offers holidaymakers the opportunity of enjoying a getaway in style “without feeling guilty”. As they note, “Sustainability has been driving every decision from building materials and methods to energy consumption. By choosing Ollero Eco Lodge you commit to both an authentic local lifestyle and eco-responsible travel.” Photos supplied by Visit Rovaniemi www.visitrovaniemi.fi www.olleroecolodge.com www.santaclausvillage.info HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES 2021

JEEP

CHEROKEE AND WRANGLER GROUND-BREAKING OFF-ROAD INNOVATION

Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Jeep Wrangler 1941

Two Jeep models unveiled this year have consolidated Jeep’s reputation for cutting-edge off-road and SUV motoring. As part of its 80th anniversary celebrations, Jeep introduced what the company described as “the most capable Wrangler ever offered on UK roads”, and also presented a reimagined Grand Cherokee L as a tribute to the iconic SUV model’s 30-year legacy. Based on a Wrangler Rubicon, the limited-edition Jeep Wrangler 1941 (just 41 models in the UK) utilises Jeep performance parts to enhance its off-road ability. Setting this model apart from the rest of the Wrangler range, each 1941 has been factory-modified with a two-inch suspension lift kit, black door sill guards, front and rear splash guards, black fuel filler door, all-weather mats and 1941 bonnet decal. Enhanced rear underbody protection and wheel arch extensions further extend its capabilities, while the addition of a hardtop headliner enhances the cabin’s ambience. Each accessory has been designed and engineered specifically for the vehicle, and tested thoroughly. 158

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

Available exclusively as a four-door, in combination with the 2.2-litre Multijet diesel engine, the 41 model includes a choice of four colours: Brilliant Black, Granite Crystal, Firecracker Red and Billet Silver. Meanwhile, the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L delivers an innovative combination of enhanced 4x4 capability, superior on-road refinement, premium styling and craftsmanship, and advanced safety and technology features – and is available for the first time with seating for six or seven. “When you set out to reimagine an SUV as beloved as the Jeep Grand Cherokee,” says Jeep global president Christian Meunier, “building on its nearly 30-year legacy as an overachiever is paramount to every decision that is made. “The new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is crafted to exceed expectations and do what no other SUV can do: deliver legendary Jeep 4x4 off-road capability blended with superior on-road manners. It is built on an all-new architecture and wrapped in a stunning new design that honours its iconic Jeep design heritage, while also extending to accommodate a third row to

meet the growing needs of our Jeep customers who have asked for more space and functionality.” The Jeep Grand Cherokee L includes numerous improvements to optimise ride, handling and sound insulation, while also reducing weight and improving fuel economy. It features a new unibody design, together with three available 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and QuadraDrive II), as well as Quadra-Lift air suspension and a standard Selec-Terrain traction management system. The Jeep Grand Cherokee L comes with a choice of two powerful and fuelefficient engines set up for any driving situation. Standard is the all-aluminium 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine, with 290 hp and 348 Nm of torque, while buyers who want more power can opt for the 5.7-litre V8, with 357 hp and 528 Nm torque delivered over a broad power band. Externally, notes Mark Allen, head of Jeep exterior design, “The Jeep design team envisioned a modern aesthetic – they worked to sculpt it down and gave it a clean and updated premium appearance tailored for today’s

customer. The design for the first-ever three-row Grand Cherokee pays respect to its heritage and honours its utilitarian roots.” As for the interior, according to head of advanced interior design Chris Benjamin, “We viewed the overall design process through a wide lens that allowed us to use a new generation of Jeep interiors. While the Jeep Grand Cherokee interior has been synonymous with sophistication, our approach to the three-row version was to showcase distinguished details, handcrafted materials and modern amenities that pair seamlessly with its tailored exterior.” Also introduced for the Grand Cherokee L was a new premium package, Summit Reserve, highlighted by hand-wrapped, quilted Palermo leather, ventilated front and second-row seats, memory and massage front seats, and the choice of a new Tupelo interior colour. Technologically, the Jeep Grand Cherokee features significant nextgeneration innovations including an advanced Uconnect 5 system, rear-seat monitoring camera, digital rear-view mirror, HUD, frameless digital cluster and McIntosh 19-speaker premium audio system. Globally, they note, 70-80 per cent of photography students are women, but they account for only 13-15 per cent of professional photographers. “And when women’s stories aren’t recognised, we’re not getting the whole picture.” This year’s award once again aims to help overcome that imbalance. “From Imogen Freeland’s poignant take on motherhood to Marzena Han’s look at the “social invisibility” felt by middle-aged women – Paola Vivas’ defiant portrait of Latino identity to Thandiwe Muriu’s vibrant celebration of African individuality – Female in Focus 2021 weaves a raw and intricate tapestry of women’s experiences from around the world.” Sponsored by MPB, the world’s largest online platform for used photo and video kit, the exhibition is scheduled to go on show at Green Space Miami from 18 November to 18 January as part of the inaugural WOPHA Congress in the U.S., while a UK exhibition is also planned for later this year. The winners were selected by an international panel of judges including Joanna Milter, director of photography for the New Yorker; Aldeide Delgado, founder and director of Women Photographers International Archive; and Holly Fraser, editor-in-chief of WePresent. Commenting on the award WOPHA’s Aldeide Delgado said, “In a fertile moment where we witness the rise of initiatives oriented to render visible women’s long-neglected contributions to photographic arts, the Female in

Focus award represents an extraordinary opportunity for emerging talents to have their work promoted by one of the most prestigious photography platforms. It provides recognition, professional opportunities and fosters collaboration among an international supporting network of women in photography. “I’m honoured to co-present the Female in Focus exhibition as part of the celebration of the world’s first-ever WOPHA Congress, an international convening that invites women photography organisations from around the world to participate alongside acclaimed art historians, curators, and preeminent women photographers on the topics of women, photography and feminisms.” Added MPB chief marketing officer Sophie Collins, “At MPB, we understand the transformative power of photography and why it’s critical to address gender inequality in the industry. We are committed to increasing opportunities in visual storytelling by putting photo and video kit into more hands, giving more people a voice, and helping to visualise a more sustainable future. We’re incredibly proud to sponsor Female in Focus to shine a light on the extraordinary work of women and non-binary photographers around the globe” 1854 Media is an award-winning digital media organisation with a global audience of photographers, arts lovers and industry experts. At its core is British Journal of Photography, “the world’s longest running photography title, which has been showcasing pioneers of the art form since 1854”. www.1854.photography HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES 2021

Marifé Nuñez is an artist and the director of Es.Arte Gallery. After several years exhibiting in different parts of the world, she decided to look for a space where she could exhibit her own work as well as the work of other colleagues – and help promote their careers. The challenge of running Es.Arte Gallery has led her to reduce the production of her own works, but it is also an opportunity to be in constant contact with other artists and to offer them a platform where they can make themselves known. “It’s great to be able to support other artists from my space. As an artist I know how complicated it is to find a gallery that supports you and wants to exhibit your work. Not just any artist enters, however, as I’m very critical, we look for a particular artistic line, and the artist needs to fit the gallery’s profile.” She initially opened her gallery in San Pedro in June 2017 before moving to Centro Plaza in August this year. Even though she has not yet presented any solo exhibition in her own gallery, she is deeply immersed in the process of creation. In her art the female figure is always the protagonist, wrapped in a social discourse that leaves no one indifferent. She shows women as the mainstay of events, in tune with feminist theories of gender reversal by placing them in situations previously reserved only for men. Her series “Past and Present” (with nearly all the pieces sold) warrants special mention. Núñez has made extensive use of quotation, creating associative 162

links between the past and established meanings and contemporary layers of postmodern critical discourse. In this way, portraits of the old masters, now with a new set of aesthetic and symbolic elements, look out at us from her paintings. She is currently working on “Lost Angels”, with one eye highlighted by a neon drawing of the all-seeing eye. Núñez creates layers of elaborate compositions by adhering to shapes, and with deeper insight we gain a fuller impression of the intellectual aspects of her painting. It becomes clear to us that the artist is familiar with and fascinated by contemporary theories of quantum physics, iconographic rules and the historical structures of gender identities, and that she uses this skillfully in her work. She creates a kind of authorial metalanguage in this contemporary moment, often described as the “Age of Communication“. To that end, Núñez empowers discourse on the issues of today and offers her perceptive input. T E N T H O U SA N D ST E PS M Y T H O R FACT? BY RACHEL GARROD

I have written about the benefits of walking previously, but having just finished the Camino de Santiago I feel compelled to write again about its wonders. We walked “The English Way”, which was only a small part of the Camino (113 kilometres to be exact), but on some days that did not feel like a small part! In all, the Camino took us five days and we were blown away by the sense of camaraderie, achievement and pure joy that hours of daily walking gave us. But you don’t need to walk as far as we did to reap benefits. Most of us know that 10,000 steps a day is touted as the recommended amount in order to gain health benefits such as improved cardiovascular function, increased bone density, and better mood, creativity and focus. But is it really necessary to be doing that much every day? Recent evidence seems to suggest that 7,000 steps a day might be enough to accrue significant health benefits. Research from the University of Massachusetts found that, in a cohort of 2,000 people, the risk of dying over an 11-year period was 50 to 70 per cent lower among those taking 7,000 steps a day compared with those taking fewer than that. Other studies have confirmed this and shown that even as few as 4,000 steps a day confers a 30 per cent reduced risk of death compared with 2,000 steps per day. Interestingly, the Massachusetts study showed no effect of intensity of walking on health benefits, though this was perhaps because those who walked fastest inevitably tended to walk further, and individual effects were difficult to tease out. While these studies are complicated to carry out, particularly when considering mortality as an outcome, the combined wisdom now really is that something is better than nothing. You don’t need to walk the Camino, although I would heartily recommend it, but a daily walk will do you the power of good. And by monitoring your step 164

count you may find the motivation to do a little more each day. What You Eat Can Improve Waist Size Eating more whole grains may mean a smaller waistline. Middle-aged and older-aged adults who ate at least three servings of whole grains daily had smaller increases in waist size, blood pressure and blood sugar levels over time compared to those who ate less than one-half serving per day, according to new medical data. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers at Tufts University (Boston) examined how whole-grain and refined-grain intake over time impacted five risk factors of heart disease. The American researchers looked at waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar, triglyceride and HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels. Using data from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring Cohort, which began in the 1970s to assess long-term risk factors of heart disease, the researchers examined health outcomes associated with whole-grain and refined-grain consumption over a median of 18 years. The 3,100 participants were on average in their mid-50s at the start of data collection. The research team compared changes in the five risk factors, over four-year intervals, across four categories of reported whole grain intake, ranging from less than a half serving per day to three or more servings per day. An example of a serving is one slice of whole-grain bread, a half cup of rolled oats cereal, or a half cup of brown rice. Researchers found that waist size increased by an average of more than one inch (2.5 centimetres) in the low intake participants compared to about half an inch in the high intake participants. Even after accounting for changes in waist size, average increases in blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels were greater in low intake participants compared to high intake participants. “Our findings suggest that eating whole-grain foods as part of a healthy diet delivers health benefits beyond just helping us lose or maintain weight as we age. In fact, these data suggest that people who eat more whole grains are better able to maintain their blood sugar and blood pressure over time. Managing these risk factors as we age may help to protect against heart disease,” said study investigator Nicola McKeown, who is a scientist on the nutritional epidemiology team at Tufts University in Massachusetts. The presence of dietary fibre in whole grains can have a satiating effect, and the magnesium, potassium and antioxidants may contribute to lowering blood pressure. The greatest contributor to whole-grain intake among participants was whole-wheat breads and ready-to-eat whole-grain breakfast cereals. The refined grains came mostly from pasta and white bread. Boosting Brain Power with Small Dietary Changes Individuals who eat a diet that includes at least half a serving per day of foods high in flavonoids like strawberries, oranges, peppers and apples may have a 20 per cent lower risk of cognitive decline, according to a study 166

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

published in the journal Neurology. American researchers looked at several types of flavonoids, and found that flavones and anthocyanins may have the most protective effect. Flavonoids are naturally occurring compounds found in plants and are considered powerful antioxidants. It is thought that having too few antioxidants may play a role in cognitive decline as you age. “There is mounting evidence suggesting flavonoids are powerhouses when it comes to preventing your thinking skills from declining as you get older,” said study author Dr. Walter Willett, who is with Harvard University in Boston (Massachusetts). “Our results are exciting because they show that making simple changes to your diet could help prevent cognitive decline.” The study looked at 49,493 women with an average age of 48 and 27,842 men with an average age of 51 at the start of the study. Researchers also looked at individual flavonoids and other factors. Flavones, found in some spices and yellow or orange fruits and vegetables, had the strongest protective qualities, and were associated with a 38 per cent reduction in risk of cognitive decline, which is the equivalent of being three to four years younger in age. Peppers have about five milligrams of flavones per 100 gram serving. Anthocyanins, found in blueberries, blackberries and cherries, were associated with a 24 per cent reduced risk of cognitive decline. Blueberries have about 164 milligrams of anthocyanins per 100 gram serving. The authors suggest we think about colour and pick the darkest berries and fruits for the biggest nutritional punch. K E E P I T S I M P L E : M A K E A W I L L I N S PA I N ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS

Our law firm advised a Dutch couple on the purchase of a small house in Spain that they planned to use as a second home during their retirement after years of working in the Netherlands. Following the purchase, we recommended they make a will in Spain. However, the couple decided to wait because they were in the process of making a will in their home country. To buy a property in Spain, it is necessary to appear personally before a notary public to sign the deed of sale. At that time, it is a good moment to make a will in Spain, before the Spanish notary, and to make it clear what to do with your assets in Spain after your death. We recommend making a will in Spain to avoid any headaches for heirs and legatees in the future. Well, back to our Dutch retired couple... Unfortunately, one of them died shortly after and they did not have time to sign the will in either the Netherlands or Spain. The surviving spouse came to our office informing us of this situation and brought us a European Certificate of Inheritance, issued by a competent authority in the Netherlands so that we could process the inheritance in Spain. Many readers ask, “What is this European Certificate of Succession? Can it replace a will granted in Spain?” In 2012, the European Union approved a rule (No. 650/2012 of July 4, 2012) regulating the powers, applicable law, recognition and execution of decisions and public documents in matters of succession and the creation of a certificate of succession at European level. The European Certificate of Succession is a document valid in all member states that have signed it, and which allows the assets of an inheritance to be registered in the corresponding registers of any member state, in favour of the heirs, legatees who have direct rights in the inheritance and executors, testamentary administrators who need to exercise their rights in other member states. Each member state shall determine which authority is competent to issue such certificates. It is normally the notary of each member state who has the power to issue this certificate of succession. The European Certificate of Succession should be considered as a certificate of inheritance in any member state, without additional formal or documentary requirements. However, sometimes we can find obstacles. 178

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2021

Let us return to our Dutch client, who came to our offices with the European Certificate of Inheritance after her husband’s death, issued by a competent notary in the Netherlands. It should be noted that the issue of the European Certificate of Inheritance is voluntary, at the request – in our case – of her husband’s widow, who is the universal heir to her late husband’s assets. However, the certificate issued by the Dutch notary appeared before the Spanish law as an excessively short document, lacking the essential elements to be able to register the proportional part of the property in the name of the widow. The Spanish notary, on analysing the European certificate that we presented to him, refused to grant a deed of acceptance and award of inheritance in favour of the inheriting wife under this certificate as it was insufficient. Finally, we managed to get the Dutch notary to issue a clarification of the European certificate, thus ending the registration of the property in favour of our client. However, the conclusion we want our readers to draw from all of the above is that many administrative and documentation gathering procedures can be avoided by making a will in Spain. Your heirs will thank you for it.
