It was inevitable really, that the home décor and design industry would be drawn into the debate. In recent months artificial intelligence has dominated headlines and we have been suitably dazzled – and a little disturbed, even alarmed – by the exploits of a certain “ChatGPT”.
The future, we are told, is all about bots that can converse intelligently with us, do homework for our children, write doctoral thesis for university students, and (this is the most scary aspect) edit home and lifestyle magazines.
Okay, the last bit was just personal hysteria, but clearly artificial intelligence has the potential, in theory at least, to influence and re-shape our everyday lives – both professional and particular. And yes, it is true that this influence might not always be benign.
One (artificial) voice of alarm was recently raised about the future of architects, although it could apply equally to a multitude of professions. Writing for Dezeen, AI architecture expert and Florida-based professor Neil Leach asked ChatGPT for an “attention grabbing” answer to how AI could negatively impact the architecture profession in the future.
“In the near future,” ChatGPT warned, “architects may become a thing of the past. AI is quickly advancing to a point where it can generate the design of a building completely autonomously. With the potential to create designs faster and with more accuracy than ever before, AI has the potential to revolutionise the architecture industry, leaving traditional architects out of the equation. This could spell the end of the profession as we know it, raising questions of what the future holds for architects in a world of AI-generated buildings.”
Somewhat less disconcerting, a study published in the PLOS ONE journal found that robots would be doing 39 per cent of domestic chores in a decade. According to researchers from the UK and Japan, AI experts were asked, “If robots will take our jobs, will they at least also take out the trash for us?” Their prediction was that automation would make such household tasks as washing up, cleaning and laundry, as well as ordering groceries, essentially obsolete for humans by 2033.
That actually sounds like quite an appealing AI prospect – except perhaps for those who like to gently meditate while ironing clothes – but it’s still premature to put our feet up permanently. Kate Devlin, a reader in AI and Society at King’s College in London suggested to the BBC that technology is more likely to help humans rather than replace them. “It’s difficult and expensive to make a robot that can do multiple or general tasks. Instead, it’s easier and more useful to create assistive technology that helps us rather than replaces us.”
So, fortunately, it seems as though we are not yet facing a fully-automated brave new world, with numerous issues, including both technical and ethical (privacy, etc.), still to be addressed. That means we can look forward to many more years enjoying pleasurable moments in our homes – like cooking a family favourite in our newly-refurbished kitchen, or pottering in the garden and giving our terrace plants some tender loving care.
In short, most of us will continue to take comfort from the fact that the human touch will always prevail in one way or another, and traditional skills will still be indispensable. Whether it is a home decorator offering their specialist advice based on years of experience, or an architect creatively tweaking a design to cater for a client’s idiosyncrasies, or a builder (rather than a robot) wielding a hammer and nails in an awkward corner, or a real estate agent taking a buyer on a personalised property tour, or a photographer arranging a shoot... or a journalist editing a home and lifestyle magazine.
The key will be to not demonise all AI-assisted razzle-dazzle, to cautiously embrace the positive and advantageous options, and ultimately to ensure these future evolutionary developments work in our favour, as effectively as possible in our home, workplace and general lives.

EDITOR’S NOTE
AMAZING OUTDOOR SPACES
As we ease ourselves into the spring months, we need to cast greater attention on our outdoor furniture, especially with the Easter break approaching when there is the possibility of entertaining visiting guests.
Living in southern Spain means that the outdoor living space holds just as much value as the interior of the home, so the design style should not stop at the patio door. Rather, it should continue to the outdoors, thus connecting the two areas in order to give a seamless sense of flow. Creating cosy lounge areas with the option of shade provides a welcoming feel, allowing you to relax and enjoy the outdoors to the full.
Many leading outdoor furniture companies are bringing out new collections that not only offer stylish designs but also superlative comfort using technologically-advanced materials that stand the test of time. Take a look at these ideas…

THE SUNBRELLA FABRIC PHENOMENON
A SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE TEXTILE
We all love spending time enjoying our open-air spaces, which is why it is so important to get outdoor furniture right. As much as we want our outdoor furniture to be stylish, we also need it to last. With harsh weather conditions, outdoor furniture can sometimes only survive one season, so it is wise to choose premium materials that will stand the test of time and enable you to enjoy your furniture for longer periods.
Sunbrella furniture fabrics are made using resilient acrylic fibres that are 100 per cent solution-dyed. It does not fade in the sun or wash out in the rain, maintaining its colour as fresh as the day you bought it – for years to come. Where other fabrics can get easily stained or mouldy due to humidity, Sunbrella fabric repels water droplets and mildew, keeping the fabric looking like new year in, year out.
Sunbrella not only offers the advantages of long-lasting enjoyment, but when the furniture is not in use, you can leave it outside without a care in the world, as it holds-up perfectly to the ravages of extreme weather conditions.
The Sunbrella brand was born in the sixties and was used in the production of awnings after the realisation that it had a much longer lifespan than cotton, which had been used previously. Its value was soon recognised and it became more widely used for other shade solutions, outdoor furniture upholstery and textiles within the marine sector.
Sunbrella tirelessly carries out research and development to refine the durability of its fabric, as well as continuously bringing out new designs and applications so that they can be used in an increasing number of ways.
De Tropen is an official retailer of Sunbrella, with many of their furniture items being upholstered in the innovative fabric. Their huge 13,000 square-metre showroom is located on the Avda. del Mediterráneo A7, Exit 953 Vélez-Málaga, or you can shop online at www.detropen.es.

SIMPLY DELIGHTFUL LIGHTING
A room that only has ambient lighting will feel flat and cold, which is why layering your lighting is so important to add depth and create a cosy feel to the space. Ideally, a room should have task lighting such as a table or floor lamp for reading and accent lighting to highlight certain interesting points such as artwork or display cabinetry. When the room is dark the best features will not fade away, as accent lighting brings them to the fore and creates focal interest within the space. Decorative lighting adds artistic expression, but too many lamps in a room can make the space feel cluttered – so put some careful consideration into what you choose and avoid overkill.
The overall trend for using natural materials in the home has also veered into the lighting world, with shades made from wood and natural fabrics often featured in contemporary collections. Metallic lamps are a great way to add a luxurious feel to a room, particularly if it is minimalist or neutral in colour, adding depth to the space with reflecting light.

LIGHTING UP THE NIGHT
Adding pockets of light in your garden or terrace immediately makes the outdoor space more inviting. After all, sitting in the dark outside is generally not a pleasant experience. Lighting up foliage and water features can create a whimsical look, while also acknowledging the beauty of nature around you.
Designed by Servomuto, the new Lagoon outdoor lamp collection by Contardi was inspired by the vertical lines and simplicity of the Typha plant, seen in marshy areas on the banks of rivers and lakes. Like the plant, the Lagoon comes in three different sizes. It has a matt-black lacquered frame with copper features and, when grouped together, creates an illuminated forest-like aesthetic. Available from Outdoor Concepts (www.outdoorconcepts.es) and Alison Bethell-Collins Interior Design (www.alisonbethellcollins.com), both situated in San Pedro de Alcántara.

LIVING ROOM PERFECTION
The living room is where your guests immediately ascertain your design style, so needless to say it is a hugely important area of the home. A cosy space is always the goal, but adding some statement pieces such as a sculptural armchair or table is a great way to create a contemporary design touch. A careful balance between keeping the room welcoming and functional yet stunningly beautiful can be a challenge, especially if space is an issue, but placing every item of furniture purposefully will pay off in the overall aesthetic of the room. Curvy sofas are especially popular at the moment, and understandably so, as their soft silhouettes immediately scream “comfort”. Multi-functional tables that offer storage below are excellent for space-saving solutions and for keeping surfaces clutter-free. Pouffes and stools are also handy additions, doubling-up as extra seating as well as mini tables, when unexpected guests pay a visit.
A well-thought-out living room will not only create a more relaxing space, but it will also cast a long-lasting impression on your guests. Remember that functionality, style, layout and comfort are the four basic rules to take into account when designing this significant area of your home, so consider all elements with care and don’t overfill the room with unnecessary items. That way you will ensure you have a room that everyone can truly enjoy.

NEW FURNITURE SHOWROOM OFFERING CASUAL MEDITERRANEAN STYLE
PHOTOS BY JOHNNY GATES
FIRST PERSON ... METAMORFOZA HOME INTERIORS
88 MARCH & APRIL 2023
A newly opened contemporary furniture showroom in Nueva Andalucía has already sparked great interest among the locals. Originating from Belgium, this enormous showroom – primarily retailing indoor furniture – offers something for everyone from sofas, tables, mirrors and textiles to accessories. We visited the showroom to have a chat with the owners, Christophe Tuytschaver and Julie Verhasselt, about their concept…
Who is behind Metamorfoza Home Interiors and how did you end up launching in Marbella?
Both Julie and I set up Metamorfoza in Knokke (Belgium) 25 years ago when we first got together. I always had an interest in design and, while in Indonesia on holiday, we were so inspired by all the artisanal pieces we saw that we had to organise a container to send it all back to Belgium, and it was then we decided to open a shop in Belgium to sell it. Metamorfoza is very well established in Knokke and we have enjoyed great success there. As we have visited Marbella many times over the years, my next goal was to open a showroom here on the Coast, which I finally achieved at the beginning of this year.
What is the general concept of the Metamorfoza showroom?
We do not see ourselves as interior designers but rather furniture retailers. We want people to come and feel relaxed to peruse the showroom displays and pick-and-choose whatever catches their eye. We are obviously experts in our field and can certainly advise on how to best furnish a living space – we are full of ideas! – but our showroom is really here to inspire people no matter what their budget is.
What would you consider is the general style of furniture within the showroom?
I would say that our style is contemporary, organic and casual, yet good quality at very reasonable prices. We work with well-respected Belgium brands such as Ethnicraft, Passe Partout, Mobitec and Bazar Bizar, for example, but also with other brands around Europe which we feel really fit our style in the showroom.
You have only been open a few weeks but what has been your experience so far?
We have had many people wander into the showroom curious to see what we have on offer. We thought we would have had many Belgian visitors but it has been a wide range of nationalities. I consider the reason for this is because the items we have here are appealing to everyone and fit very well into any casual Mediterranean home. Our sofas have been especially popular – probably because they have a contemporary look, yet are welcoming and very comfortable at really competitive prices.
Why did you choose such a large space for your showroom?
We purposely chose large premises so that we could stock as many furniture items on-site as possible and that when an item is sold we can replace it quickly. With delivery times taking so long these days, we wanted to be able to offer clients, when it is possible, furniture that they can take away on the spot and not have to endure the inconvenience of waiting weeks, sometimes months, for their order to arrive. Of course, when it comes to sofas, for example, especially customised ones, it is not always possible but we try our best to offer the best service possible to our clients.

DINING IN DESIGN TRENDS
Your dining area is more than just somewhere to eat. It is where the ones you care about come together to engage in conversation over home-cooked food. Choosing the right table for the job is important, as size, shape and durability are all key factors to consider. Recently we have seen a growing trend for sculptural bases, adding more of an artistic touch to the standard four-legged table. Mixingand-matching chairs is also an increasingly popular trend around dining tables, creating a more playful look. If you have a small dining area, choosing a circular table could be the perfect solution as they save on space, while extendable tables are fabulous for giving you the ability to accommodate unexpected guests. Your dining table should be highly durable, as it can take a few knocks over the years, which is why wood is such a popular go-to when it comes to materials for tables, being both resilient and gaining character with age.

YOUR RESTFUL BEDROOM
If there is one room in the house where maximalism should be avoided, it is the bedroom. A cluttered bedroom does not allow the brain to relax, which is so important in order to rest properly. Investing in good storage is, therefore, worth every penny. The ethnic trend has become increasingly popular in bedrooms, with natural materials such as linen and cotton, recycled wood and botanicals all adding to the overall organic feel of the space – and rightly so, as nature has a calming effect on all of us.
Ensuring a good night’s sleep is often down to the quality of your bed. Huge leaps in technology have transformed the standard bed into a game-changer, with tilting bed bases and mattresses that perfectly suit your body’s individual requirements achieving ergonomic superlativeness.
Bed linen that allows your body to breathe will keep your body temperature at a level that aids sleeping. Avoid synthetic fibres which can make you sweat and instead always go for natural fabrics. Bright or bold prints are not easy on the eye, with white being a firm favourite for many when choosing bed linen. It looks and feels clean, fresh and hygienic, which in effect makes you more comfortable and relaxed.

ORDER IN THE HOUSE
A designer home doesn’t necessarily have to be a sprawling villa. Small can also be beautiful – it is just a question of applying creative storage solutions in order to keep the home organised and aesthetically attractive. Medical studies have proven that clutter can raise cortisol levels, thus increasing stress – which is why walking into a room that is orderly and well thought out is immediately both welcoming and relaxing. Improving your storage solutions can make a room instantly feel much larger. If floor space is limited, hit the walls! Shelving units are excellent space-saving options to maintain floors clear. If you have a very large room, floor shelving can also be a great way to divide the space, as well as providing a resting place for household objects.
If you want to get really creative with storage solutions, employ a professional to design bespoke cabinetry for your home. There are also designers who specialise in the area of hidden spaces. That is to say that they design shelving or bookshelves that are also doors, concealing a safe, storage room or simply another living space, for example. This might seem very James Bond but they are becoming increasingly popular in luxury contemporary builds.

REVITALISING YOUR HOME WITH STYLISH UPHOLSTERY AND COOL CURTAINS
They might sometimes seem like an after-thought – only added after the key elements of a room’s design have already been earmarked – but curtains play an integral role in the overall home décor. In addition to providing a complementary decorative aspect to the room, they are also important for insulation, noise reduction, light control, cross-ventilation and privacy. In an aesthetic sense, they can make a room look taller and more spacious – and provide an enhanced homely feel. In short, while windows are our eyes to the outside world, curtains are like a pair of cool shades that still allow natural light and fresh air to enter the home – but keep it under control to ensure a comfortable living ambience is created. Just as important is upholstery, especially as the throwaway culture is now well and truly disavowed. Even when furniture items seem to be at the end of their usefulness, some resourceful and creative upholstering can brilliantly restore them to life.
Upholstery also enables you to add your own style to a piece of furniture or, alternatively, you can simply re-cover cushions that have become a little tired looking. Always remember that, as upholstery fabric is heavier than regular fabric, it should pass the double-rub count. This means that it is abrasion-resistant, and should be easy to clean, fire-retardant and aesthetically attractive.

DRESSING-UP OUR WALLS
The wallpaper industry has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, perhaps because it has evolved so quickly technologically that wallpapers now come in such a wide range of textures and materials that they can be hung anywhere in the home. This includes humid areas such as bathrooms and on exterior walls. Their transformative effect makes them highly versatile, which is why interior designers love to work with them. They can easily add warmth, ambience or a design statement, all on their own. Wallcoverings add texture and cosiness, and there are some extremely interesting options available which have a subtle design but also give a tactile quality to a bare wall.
The trend for earthy colours has accelerated, adding a natural and organic feel to a living space. Floral and botanical prints still make their appearance but contemporary designs are veering away from the typical English-country style and instead depict nature on a large-scale approach – almost like huge murals. Of course, if you would rather not enter into the realm of wallpapers, there is always paint or tiles, another industry that has also evolved enormously over the years. Needless to say, investing in a good paint makes the application much easier, and gives a better-quality finish with longer lasting results. The world of tiles on the other hand is a vast one, with a wide range of materials, sizes and price tags. So it is always wise to consult an expert when choosing the right tiles for the job.

THE CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN
Similar to the bathroom, years ago the kitchen was an area of the home that was generally considered to be functional and not a lot else. However, over time this whole concept has changed, and the importance of these areas has increased greatly in terms of style and “liveability”. The modern-day kitchen is highlighted by free-flowing space, meaning that you can walk around it easily – with clutter-free surfaces. Good storage systems are paramount and a well-thought-out layout will make the space not only practical but also easier on the eye.
Kitchens can obviously be a huge investment but tweaking certain details will make all the difference. For example, swapping old taps for ones with spray hoses, sensors or just a contemporary design can modernise the look of your kitchen in one easy purchase. If you have space for an island, they are a fabulous way not only to add extra workspace but also to introduce a bar area – instantly transforming a functional space into a more social area.
Lighting has also become a key component in giving the kitchen a more stylistic aesthetic. Overhead strip lighting is a thing of the past, as it offers flat, uninviting and, quite frankly, impractical illumination for kitchen tasks. Instead, go for direct lighting from your overhead cabinetry and pendant lighting over a bar area for a more effective solution in terms of practicality and from an aesthetic standpoint. Make your kitchen more inspiring and it will not only add value to your home but also effectively become an additional living space, where people can enjoy food and drinks in a stylish ambience – thanks to some well-considered design, layout and lighting.

A TABLE SETTING TO BE PROUD OF
Dinner parties and summer soirées are as popular as ever, especially here in southern Spain where we can enjoy dining outdoors with family and friends for most of the year. Bringing people together over a meal is one of the joys of life – sharing jokes, romantic moments and deep conversations over home-cooked food.
“Tablescaping” has become quite a buzzword in the design world in recent years, as the tableware market has exploded with inspiring new collections. Whether you prefer a formal setting or a more casual, rustic look, the way you style your table is just as important as the cuisine you serve. They say you eat with your eyes, so it is all part of the dining experience. Even though classic white tableware will always have a place in formal dining, mixing up colours and styles is increasingly popular, giving a more playful and relaxed look. Combining vintage with contemporary pieces or luxury with boho – anything goes – so have fun creating a table that will show off your individual style to guests.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING A REPUTABLE BUILDER
Whether building a luxury home for you and your family to live in, or an investment project, the choice of a reputable construction company to do the job should be a top priority.
The property market in Marbella and surrounding areas is booming, and it is more important than ever to choose a building partner with a solid reputation. It is paramount that they comply with the latest legislation and build using pioneering technology, delivering your dream property without any unwelcome surprises.
Atlas Group’s reputation is the result of years of steady growth, careful planning and a meticulous choice of staff. In addition to a large portfolio of luxury home builds, the team also has an impressive portfolio of apartment builds, offices and single home developments.
Mike Gregory, Director General of Atlas Group, gives advice on how to choose a construction company here on the Costa del Sol…
Cut-Price Builds
Can you really be sure that the cost of your cut-price home is as easy as what is detailed on the billboard, or marketing promotion? Or will buying a turnkey advertised project end up costing more money in the long run, and bring with it a plethora of legal issues?
“Despite small differences in quotes provided for the build when you go to tender, most costs are actually the same and unavoidable. For example, architect’s fees, materials and the wages of staff cannot be promised at lower prices. If the builder is determined to cut corners, it could result in a project not being completed to the original plans, or to adequate standards. Even legal costs can crop up when a contractor is working to undercut on costs.”
Meeting the Legal Requirements
“It is vital that the building company you choose implicitly complies with the regulations and laws associated with the works. Each member of the team building your project must have gone through rigorous health and safety training. The costs gained must be signed off by a technical architect and
the materials ordered for the build should be in line with the expectations of the architect as well as the client.
“The build must also be compliant with the rules and regulations in Spain, which will result in a huge headache and cost for the client if corners are cut. At Atlas Group, we choose professionals at the top of their game, work closely together with the architect and technical architect for the duration of the build, and only partner with companies who share the same ethics and dedication to the client. Avoiding a bargain will ensure a solid build that will stand the test of time.”
Choose the Right Materials
“Your building partner will advise and help you, along with the architect, on suitable materials for the build of the project to take into consideration the location, climate and conditions of the ground it will stand on. To cut corners here will prove costly in the future. If you are building a home by the beach, you must be educated on the water table and salt conditions that will have an impact on the foundations, the structure and, of course, the water proofing. Homes located in the mountains must have retaining walls to hold the build.
“Installations should be specifically designed to suit the individual property, depending on the location, orientation, ceiling heights and window sizes. Air conditioning, underfloor heating systems, dehumidifying systems, etc., are all specially designed and selected for the property, considering energy efficiency.
“Choose a home builder who has a dedicated team with a solid track record of building quality homes and projects, and all should anticipate a finish better than you imagined.”

POWERFUL “LAST WORD” FROM ASTON MARTIN
The DBS nameplate has a stellar history in the Aston Martin family. Since 2018 the DBS has, in the words of the renowned English luxury sports car marque, stood at the pinnacle of Aston Martin’s series production range: “a Twin-Turbo V12 powerhouse blessed with ferocious performance and unmatched style”. Now, with production of the current generation DBS nearing its end, Aston Martin has introduced “a DBS to surpass all others” – the DBS 770 Ultimate. As the name implies, the DBS 770 Ultimate is an emphatic last word. “The most powerful production Aston Martin ever, and the fastest and most powerful DBS to date, extensive design and engineering enhancements ensure the DBS 770 Ultimate is an unforgettable and highly-collectible celebration of Aston Martin’s flagship Super GT.”
It is available in both Coupe and Volante form, and will be built in strictly limited numbers (300 Coupes and 199 Volantes). However, no need to arrange
a meeting with the bank manager, as all examples have been sold ahead of release.
So what are those fortunate 499 getting for their investments (in the UK, £314,000 and £337,000 for the Coupe and Volante, respectively)?
“The DBS 770 Ultimate features a ferocious iteration of Aston Martin’s quadcam 60-deg 5.2-litre V12 engine. Now developing 770 PS at 6500 rpm and a colossal 900 Nm of torque from just 1800 rpm to 5000 rpm, propelling DBS 770 Ultimate to a top speed of 211 mph (340 km/h), this magnificent engine benefits from modified air and ignition pathways together with a seven per cent increase in maximum turbo boost pressure. Precise tuning of power and torque curves gives the driver a sense of boundless performance, with an intoxicating blend of exceptional response, outstanding in-gear acceleration and the authentic V12 soundtrack.”

DBS 770 ULTIMATE
174 MARCH & APRIL 2023
Inside, the DBS 770 Ultimate has an impressive array of fresh design treatments. Signifying its halo positioning, the DBS 770 Ultimate comes with Sports Plus Seats trimmed in full semi-aniline leather and Alcantara, featuring a “fluted” quilt and perforation pattern as standard.
A bespoke trim split has been introduced, with contrast colours linked to welt and stitching, as well as a tailor-made strap and buckle badge featuring a laser-etched DBS 770 Ultimate logo on the centre armrest. Carbon fibre gearshift paddles are also fitted as standard.
Commenting on the release, Aston Martin chief technology officer Roberto Fedeli said, “When an iconic model generation reaches the end of production it is important to mark the occasion with something special. In the case of the DBS 770 Ultimate, we have spared nothing in ensuring the final version of our current series production flagship is the best-ever in every respect. Not
only is it the fastest and most powerful DBS in our history, thanks to a comprehensive suite of improvements to the transmission, steering, suspension, and underbody structure, it is also the best to drive.”
Added chief creative officer Marek Reichman, “DBS has always sat at the pinnacle of the Aston Martin production model line-up. And now we’re infusing DBS 770 Ultimate with even more… more power, more performance purity and all with more sophistication, more taste and in the most considered manner. Something so raw, and yet so beautiful it’s almost intimidating to look at. It’s through this design approach that we came up with the shapes –starting with the amped-up front end – and from there everything else flows in design balance with the performance upgrades.”

EL LAGO AND JÓSE CARLOS GARCÍA
STELLAR CUISINE ON THE COSTA DEL SOL
Sustainability has become an increasingly key ingredient on the menus at most Costa del Sol restaurants. In tune with modern society’s sensitivities, the intentions are usually honourable and sincere, although the reality is that some establishments tend to talk the talk more than actually walk the walk. For two of the Coast’s most celebrated restaurants, however, all the talk is left bubbling on the backburner and the walk is an essential part of their DNA – permeating every centimetre of their kitchen space and front-of-house dining areas. They have not only mapped the walk’s creative pathways but also rewritten the guidebook – even if both are geographically slightly “off the beaten track” when it comes to the Costa del Sol’s more glamorous gastronomic hotspots. Both José Carlos García Restaurant in Málaga city centre and El Lago in Elviria (Marbella) are fully committed to “kilometre zero” cuisine – that is, focused (where possible) on locally sourced seasonal products that are sustainably produced. Last month Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited to savour this year’s updated tasting menus at the two restaurants, each honoured with long-standing Michelin star recognition.
Lakeside Luxury in Marbella
Located in a picturesque lakeside setting in Greenlife Estates in the Elviria Hills area of eastern Marbella, El Lago has maintained its one-star Michelin status since first receiving the honour in 2005.
Current chef Fernando Villasclaras has continued the restaurant’s tradition of establishing and maintaining close ties with local farmers and producers, and that has led to the creation of a new menu that is 100 per cent vegetarian. The “Terra” menu includes mini aubergines in sherry escabeche with pine nut baba ganoush; Estepona-sourced radish in “salmorreta” sauce made from capers; and green bean tartar with flaky potato and egg yolk.
A second menu created by Villasclaras is the “Sazón” which, apart from vegetables, includes fish and meat dishes such as red mullet from Marbella with hollandaise sauce (made from its livers) and mango; grilled veal heart gizzards in bigarade sauce with green beans and harissa paste; and suckling goat with mustard, capers and grilled endive.
The starter for both menus is a sustainably-produced vegetable consommé served with a touch of Palo Cortado, and they conclude with two desserts –sweet potato with sugar molasses and muscatel grape granita, and roasted parsnip with laurel sorbet, pear and pecan nuts.
From its cellar, El Lago offers diners 300 wines, most supplied by nearby winegrowers and small wineries, but also including a selection of international wines to accommodate popular demand.
The restaurant’s front-of-house team is managed by Antonio Jiménez who, like Fernando (Nerja), was born on the Costa del Sol (Frigiliana).
Classically Chic in Málaga
José Carlos García grew up in a rich culinary environment. His trained chef father had a cafetería in Rincón de la Victoria that specialised in breakfast churros but also – somewhat bizarrely – offered clients a “fun menu” of such gourmet delicacies as caviar. Later, he opened Café Paris in Málaga capital, which two decades ago obtained a Michelin star.
His son’s passion for gastronomy was forged among the Cafe París pots and pans, before he went off to study formally at the La Cónsula academy in Churriana which, over the years, has produced many of the Costa del Sol’s finest and most celebrated chefs. José Carlos then spent four years working in the kitchens of top French and Spanish chefs including Martin Berasategui, before returning to Café Paris.
Following his father’s retirement he took over Café Paris – and he still runs it, although it is currently temporarily closed – but he had additional dreams and ambitions. In 2012 he opened his eponymous restaurant in the Muelle Uno port area, a short walk from Café Paris in the neighbouring La Malagueta suburb.
After a brief transitional period, Michelin bestowed its highly-coveted star on the new restaurant in 2013, and it has held it ever since.
Extending over 1,000 square metres, the José Carlos García restaurant is located in, arguably, the most attractive area of Muelle Uno, overlooking superyachts berthed in the port and with unobstructed views of the Málaga skyline and it’s iconic cathedral, Alcazaba fortification and Gibralfaro castle. Inside, the décor is elegantly contemporary, highlighted by a spacious chillout area that can be reconverted for special celebrations and a meticulously maintained vertical garden that runs along an entire wall.
The culinary options are essentially focused on two tasting menus, although there is some à la carte flexibility for clients who, for example, have allergies. Both menus can be accompanied by a “maridaje” of paired wines, or specific wines from the bodega.
For our luncheon visit we were treated to the “smaller” menu, which still comprises 18 exquisite dishes: eight aperitifs, seven “mains” and three desserts. Many are infused with classic local “malagueño” flavours combined with ingeniously creative modern touches (such as the “mountain-style” gazpachuelo).
José Carlos is acutely aware that elaborate tasting menus are sometimes over the top and leave diners uncomfortably clutching their bulging stomachs as they stagger out the door, so he ensures that both menus are “easy on the digestion” – and he prefers to describe the smaller aperitifs as “bocattos” (bite-sized portions). Ultimately, therefore, we had plenty of room left to try two of the dishes from the extended menu – beluga caviar and a crêpe of angulas (eels).
As to be expected, the service, led by José Carlos’s wife Lourdes Luque, is impeccable and the whole team, including chefs, are encouraged to integrate with diners and explain the intricacies of each delicacy.

LUSH BLUSH ROSÉ
JUST WHAT THE WINE-LOVING WORLD HAS BEEN WAITING FOR
Lush Blush is a premium rosé wine that has taken the market by storm since it was launched in May 2022.
For Lush Blush founder Paul Bramley, a love of food, and especially wine, has been his passion for decades. Dining in over 430 Michelin-star restaurants worldwide has enabled him to learn and gain a wealth of knowledge. Coupled with the talents of Alexis Cornu, together they have created what many believe is one of the best rosé wines in the world.
Lush Blush rosé was born to be the perfect partner for gastronomic cuisine. The art of preparing and serving great food, and the science behind it, needs to be matched with superb wine. To that end, Lush Blush, with its delicate flavours, creates a harmonious marriage between food and wine.
This premium rosé can already be found on the wine list at many of the most iconic venues in Marbella and throughout Europe. This year is going to be a significant one for Lush Blush, with new markets being opened in the Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, Denmark, UAE, Luxembourg, Israel, Austria, Finland and Portugal –and many others to come.
Lush Blush Rosé will also be present at ProWein in Germany – the largest wine trade fair in the world. In addition, three-litre bottle will be launched, including a limited-edition version that has been created in collaboration with the renowned La Scogliera restaurant in La Maddalena.

PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTATION FOR SARCOPENIA SUFFERERS
BY RACHEL GARROD
From the age of 30 our muscles decline in mass and strength, by about five per cent every 10 years. In some individuals this can progress to sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a serious condition, with 10 per cent of adults over the age of 60 thought to have it. In many it goes undiagnosed until a fall or hospitalisation occurs.
Numerous things can contribute to sarcopenia, such as a period of immobilisation, certain medications, lack of exercise and poor nutrition. If sarcopenia is present the person may be unable to stand from a chair without assistance, or have difficulty lifting heavy objects or even walking across a room. Sarcopenia was found to be significantly more prevalent in individuals who performed little or no activity.
Since protein is an essential component of muscle, taking regular protein supplements may be helpful. In one review article (Gilmartin et al., 2020) daily supplementation with 35 grams of whey protein was shown to improve several markers in the blood associated with sarcopenia. Whey protein also conclusively showed an improvement in the mTOR pathway – this is the system in which the body converts protein into muscle. However, when compared with exercise, supplementation alone was inferior.
In another study of older adults (Lin et al., 2021) whey protein powder supplementation was compared with increased dietary intake of protein. In this study there were no significant differences between the groups in measures
of muscle strength. However, the supplementation group did show an additional benefit in terms of walking speed.
The daily recommendation for protein intake is 0.8 grams per kilogram of weight but older adults are encouraged to take more, 1-1.5 grams per kilogram of weight, and ideally this should be taken as different meals rather than in one sitting. Meat, fish, lentils, pulses, eggs and beans are all good sources of protein.
The upshot is that we need plenty of protein in our diet and plenty of exercise in our life. Walking, stair climbing and even gardening are good forms of exercise but resistance training is most effective at building muscle mass. If it is difficult to get sufficient protein from your diet then supplementing with a protein powder may be a good idea, but for most people a nutritious diet should be enough.
If you are worried about your muscle strength, or just want advice getting stronger, please get in touch.

180 MARCH & APRIL 2023
Music therapy now is moving into a new realm thanks to smartphones. A music app has been developed that provides therapy by consoling, relaxing and uplifting users. Music has the potential to change emotional states and can distract listeners from negative thoughts and pain. It has also been proven to help improve memory, performance and mood.
Man Hei Law of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and his team have developed what they currently are calling “The Emotion Equalisation App”. The app creates custom playlists to help listeners care for their emotions through music. Law said music is humanity’s universal language and it can significantly impact a person’s physical and emotional state. “We all know life is not always perfect and smooth. And sometimes we cannot even let go of some thoughts. Through this app, I hope it will take people to a positive mood where they can escape from all negative thoughts.”
The app is designed for individuals who may not want to receive counselling or treatment because of feelings of shame, inadequacy or distrust. By taking listeners on an emotional roller-coaster ride, the app aims to leave them in a more positive and focused state than where they began. Users take three self-led questionnaires in the app to measure their emotional status and provide the information needed to create a playlist.
By determining the emotional state of the user, the app creates a customised and specifically sequenced playlist of songs using one of three strategies: consoling, relaxing or uplifting. Consoling music reflects the energy and mood of the user, while relaxing music provides a positive, low energy. Uplifting music is also positive, but higher energy. “The most important thing is to enable people to drive their emotion to be more positive by themselves with the app,” said Law.
Music as a Form of Praying
In Johnny Mathis’ online fan clubs, many older adults report that listening to his music is like praying. For 72-year-old Susan Trezona, it is similar. When she was in grade school she took clarinet lessons and discovered how music can change mood, fear and anxiety. “It takes your thoughts away from wherever you are and takes you somewhere else,” said Trezona. Playing music, dancing and movement activities can aid in maintaining walking endurance, improving range of motion and strength in older adults. Also, playing an instrument as a kid can lead to a sharper mind in old age, according to a study at Emory University in Atlanta (Georgia). The study included 70 adults between the ages of 60 and 83, and researchers used

a battery of tests to measure memory and other cognitive abilities. They found those who had played an instrument for a decade or longer scored significantly higher on the tests than those with no musical background. Trezona, who lives in Eugene (Oregon), said as a child she attended opera regularly and so she learned how different genres can accomplish different things. “I use music to do housework and bop along with it and sing,” said Trezona, a nurse-midwife who has delivered more than 3,000 babies. When she is having a difficult day or feeling anxiety she finds listening to music and spending time in her greenhouse is like going to church.
Rejuvenating your Journey with Joni Mitchell Research shows that music activities, whether it is listening or making music, can influence older adults’ perceptions about the quality of their lives. Andy Nahas is the founder and executive director of MusicPower in the United States. MusicPower offers financial and analytical support to organisations and individuals using music as a tool for solving societal problems, boosting happiness levels, and empowering young and older adults.
He said, although everyone understands the importance of music, its application to quality of life issues is greatly underappreciated. Relatable popular music instruction for economically challenged youth, a choir for the homeless, an orchestra for refugees and professional style concerts at nursing homes are examples of initiatives which are far too rare, according to Nahas. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) defines music therapy as the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualised goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.
“The term music therapy refers to the formal, scientific approach to the use of music for improving certain outcomes,” said Nahas. “I can’t really speak to that, but I can tell you that musical entertainment, if it’s engaging enough, is one of the most powerful ways to increase happiness levels in elders.”
Stanford University School of Medicine in the US conducted a study with 30 depressed people over 80 years of age and found that participants in a weekly music therapy group were less anxious and less distressed, and had higher self-esteem.
“There is a song called Music is the Doctor by the Doobie Brothers. The words include ‘music is the doctor. It makes you feel like you want to’. That song is about changing how you want to feel and it is so important to know music can be a great tool for redefining things,” said Trezona.

BALLOON MUSEUM MOVES INFLATABLE DISPLAY TO MADRID
An inflatable art exhibition that has been on show in Milan is scheduled to move to Madrid in March. Presented by Balloon Museum, the display comprises the installations of 18 international artists and collectives. In addition to Milan, it has been on show in Paris and Rome, and future exhibitions are planned for Vienna, Berlin, Barcelona and London, as well as major cities in the US.
Balloon Museum is described on its website (www.balloonmuseum.world) as “a format created by a curatorial team that designs and realises contemporary art exhibitions with specific works in which ‘air’ is a distinctive element”.
The “Pop Air” exhibition that has just concluded in Milan, was “characterised by a dynamic and playful layout in a space of more than six thousand square metres, designed to create an emotional dialogue with the public”. More than 350,000 visitors were reported to have viewed the two-month exhibition.
The Madrid display will be on show at the Casa de Campo park, while the London edition in December is scheduled for Old Billingsgate, a historic Victorian complex located in the heart of the city on the banks of the Thames. www.balloonmuseum.world

DESIGN-LED HOSPITALITY IN PORTUGUESE SURFING MECCA
Located about 40 minutes north-west of Lisbon, Aethos Ericeira is a newly opened hotel whose aim is to cater for the next generation of high-end travellers. According to Aethos, which describes itself as a design-led hospitality brand, the hotel has been created for “a young, striving community, including nomads who love surfing but also appreciate effortless luxury”.
Developed on a former farm property near the surfing mecca and cobblestoned fishing village of Ericeira, the establishment was designed in partnership with Barcelona-based design studio Astet and Portuguese architect Luis Pedra Silva.
“Together, they have created a unique hospitality destination that captures the textures, diversity, and spirit of its surroundings: the ever-changing hue of the sand combined with the intense blue of the Atlantic Ocean and the earthy colours of the soaring cliff.”
Nestled on top of that 40-metre sandstone cliff, this innovative new lifestyle destination offers exceptional views of the Atlantic and is surrounded by some of Europe’s most stunning beaches.
Aethos’ focus on community-driven experiences is highlighted by what it says is a locally engaged approach that puts wellness, both physical and mental, at the centre. This healthy balance can be experienced in a variety of ways, including delicious cuisine, daily yoga and meditation classes.
“We are creating culture,” says Aethos founder and CEO Benjamin Habbel. “We have a community of influential change-makers and entrepreneurs, and we use Aethos as a platform to drive positive change for both our guests and the overall setting as a whole.
“We want to be an authentic reflection of the local environment, so every destination is very different from the others. What is true in all of our properties is that there’s always something happening, and there’s a reason to be there.”
The hotel complex comprises 50 rooms and suites, a wooden walkway along the edge of the cliff, a meditation and yoga deck and a fire pit area. In addition to a gym and heated saltwater pool, its spa area includes a hammam, a hot slab and treatment rooms.

Complimentary e-bikes and beach buggies are available for guests who want to discover the property’s natural surroundings and nearby bike paths and beaches. Surf enthusiasts have access to individual storage for boards and wetsuits, and they can also take advantage of in-house surf coaching, as well as a dedicated surf concierge who provides updated information and recommendations for the best surfing spot.
As for the architecture and interior design, Astet co-founder Ala Zreigat, explains, “One of the challenges was making it work for every season, but we believe we were able to solve it by proposing a dialogue between cold and warm materials.” From warm wood, leather, velvet, rugs, and other fabrics to other materials such as stone and marble, the interior design project “feels laid back yet elevated, with a colour palette that reminds the guests where they are”.
The unpretentiousness of the space, says Zreigat, is materialised through several architectural and design choices that allow guests to “enjoy the pleasures life can offer… the proposal is very eclectic. You feel that it belongs
to the context but is also like an international project where anyone from anywhere would feel happy and relaxed, that they belong and are not out of place.” Adds Habbel, “I think what is exciting about Aethos for everybody is our ability to listen to the local community, to listen to our guests, and to just get on with it. And a lot of the ideas we implement come from what we picked up in conversations with the local community. And, of course, our global cluster of guests. As entrepreneurs, we try to find common-sense solutions to annoyances. And this is the beauty of building a hotel from scratch. We’re not traditional hoteliers. We’re owner-operators who can look at a hotel as a completely white canvas, since we have no brand standards dictated by anyone, and there’s no one telling us what to do — we can just do what we think is the best experience for our guests.”

THE SECOND CHANCE LAW IN SPAIN
ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS
Do you have debts in Spain and you can’t keep up with your payments? Are you immersed in insolvency proceedings? The second chance law in Spain allows you to renegotiate or even partially or totally eliminate your debts. So what does this entail? The second chance law is aimed at individuals and the self-employed who are overwhelmed by their debt situation in Spain and who, due to circumstances beyond their control, are unable to meet their payments. It provides them with the opportunity to “get their lives back on track and even risk new initiatives, without having to indefinitely cope with a debt burden that they will never be able to meet” (Explanatory Memorandum of Royal Decree-Law 25/2015).
Therefore, a person who has several creditors can file for voluntary insolvency proceedings and, from that moment on, any embargoes will be lifted and debt executions cannot be exercised, as all assets will belong to the insolvency proceedings’ liabilities.
Initially, an attempt will be made to reach an out-of-court agreement with your creditors in Spain.
This will involve renegotiating the debt by extending the deadlines or reducing the amount owed – commonly known as “quitas” or “esperas” – with the aim of improving the debt conditions in order to be able to repay the money. A plan and a payment schedule must be developed so that the debtor can meet their debts, and there is a period of two months to reach this agreement.
Once an agreement has been reached, and the conditions of the debts have been improved in such a way that the debtor can pay them, an insolvency administrator is appointed. This is the person responsible for managing and administering the insolvency proceedings, and they are appointed by a judge.
Therefore, the debtor will continue to have access to their assets, but they will be administered by the person appointed as administrator, in order for them to be able to pay their debts as agreed.
However, what happens if agreement is not reached with the creditors or, having reached an agreement, the debtor does not have sufficient economic capacity to comply with the terms?
This is usually the most common situation, and the debtor would then move on to the phase of consecutive insolvency proceedings, where a judge can exonerate them from 100 per cent of the debt.
