FROM THE EDITOR >
This edition of Home & Lifestyle Magazine marks our 4-year anniversary, and it’s incredible how much has changed since the publication launch in May 2008. The magazine first started as a smaller home décor publication for local businesses on the coast. Today, Home & Lifestyle is a full-sized magazine that has developed a readership throughout the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar and beyond. A big thank you to all our advertisers who have been with us since its launch and welcome to our biggest issue ever. In this issue we brilliantly capture the colours of summer, from burning sunsets to the cool hues of blue, enticing us outdoors with new understated and luxurious outdoor furniture collections, the bright summery hues of stackable chairs and the vivid colours of outdoor entertaining accessories. We also celebrate all things British with the much anticipated Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games this summer. From refrigerators to cool your cervéza to fabulous Union Jacks to decorate and adorn, plus we take a look at the innovative and unique architecture designed for London 2012. No matter what brilliant colour nature inspires in décor, in fashion diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and this issue sparkles with a perfect complement to the Armani Spring and Summer collection featured inside. For the more adventurous, a trip to Marrakech and Barcelona, plus a cruise down the highway on a custom chopper. This issue brings you a “feel good factor” — outdoor living, nostalgia and the ultimate thrill ride.
ABOUT THE COVER This issue’s cover “Flowers” are quirky and informal modern glass décor for every day living. Inspired by the colours of spring flowers, the “murano” plates are available in two different sizes: 30 cm or 19 cm wide. NasonMoretti, founded in the 1920s, is one of the leading glassworks on the Venetian island of Murano. The firm specialises in the production of drinking glasses and chalices manufactured in a wide range of styles. In these genuinely unique products the traditional skills of master glassmakers are integrated with modern concepts of design. Designers: NasonMoretti and Stefano Marcato www.nasonmoretti.it

Cortijo Las Flores classical elegance
Sometimes life steers us, as if by fate, into the positions to which we are most suited. It was in 1992, while assisting with the re-decoration of a friend’s villa in San Roque, that Linda Cockerell discovered her passion for home decoration. Her newfound creative flare and heartfelt joy for being part of bringing a beautiful home to life set the stage for a new enterprise. It began in a small garage tucked away in a picturesque Cortijo just outside Sotogrande, and has developed to become a bespoke home furnishing business, featuring over 1,000 books, 400 catalogues, and a full team of skilled and professional artisans. Linda very much focuses on the personal touch; “We like to become friends with our clients and to get to know their personal tastes and styles, so that we can create homes and living spaces that are more than just beautiful settings, but that also very much feel like home”. Over the years, the Cortijo Las Flores has flourished to become an established and trusted part of the Sotogrande community. Today, Linda and her team can boast a portfolio of stunning villa and Cortijo design projects, streaming from Gibraltar to marbella, and even with commissions from the UK. While the Cortijo Las Flores showroom certainly appeals to those who prefer the classic elegant country feel, reflecting Linda’s personal style, over the years Linda has been at the helm of a vast range of design projects; from classic and modern villas and designer apartments featuring brands such as Ralph Lauren. A highlight of the business has been the interior design of a palatial villa, decorated in the very finest silks, with
custom-made carpets running throughout, bespoke hand-made furniture highlighted with a gold leaf trim, and elegantly enhanced with highly decorative curtains and beautiful custom made trimmings. Not many people know this, but Cortijo Las Flores is the foundation from which many local and highlytrained artisans have been offering their services for almost two decades. This includes the creation of bespoke English hand-made curtains, furniture restoration, hand-made quilting, decorative painting, upholstering and professional pole fitting. This means that whether customers require a full home decoration service, are simply in need of some new curtains, or the restoration of an old favourite chair, Linda and her team take care to ensure the end product brings a content and happy smile. Linda and her team welcome you to the Cortijo Las Flores showroom to look through fabrics and brochures, to gain assistance with a specific home furnishing project, or to simply be inspired by ideas to help you enhance your home to your personal taste and style. Opening hours: 10-14 & 17-19 Monday to Friday. By Appointment Saturdays. C/ Las Flores 22 San Enrique de Guadiaro, Sotogrande. T: +34 956 615 143 m: +34 609 576 793 www.cortijolasflores.net

Shading with style
Artistic, creative, shapely and elegant Shade sails are a hot garden accessory, not only do they provide protection from the elements but they also inject style into your outdoor area. Developed in Australia 25 years ago, shade sails not only block out harsh heat and glaring light, but they also provide a very high factor of up to 97% UV protection from the sun’s rays. The custom made designs are appealing and practically perfect for any area around your home or business and can provide a cost effective solution to large areas such as swimming pools, playgrounds, car parking areas and tennis courts where minimal support is required. Durable, versatile and in striking contemporary design the sails are also an ideal choice to off-set your modern outdoor furniture and terraces to sprawling car ports, creating a practical and eye-catching area. Since 2007, The Shade Sail Company has been installing shade systems for satisfied clients all over Andalucía in Southern Spain. Based near marbella on the Costa del Sol, the company has taken on projects all over the province, including the main cities of Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada, Cádiz and málaga, as well as the coastal region from Gibraltar to motril.
Sleek sofas, slick prices It is refreshing to be able to publicise the opening of a new store on the coast, and not just one, in fact World of Sofas Spain have recently opened three new shops in the past year with plans for further expansion in the future. The reason behind their success and continued optimism comes purely down to price and product. The World of Sofas have achieved a level of quality that is only exceeded by the constant ability to bring their prices in-line with customers best expectations, and there is no substitute for the price quality equation. All four stores offer a huge range of leather suites, sofas, corner units and unique designer pieces in a staggering array of material and design options, complemented with helpful, multi-lingual staff to assist customers in their choices. With many of their products available for immediate delivery and the constant introduction of new ranges from the best manufacturers and brands, if it exists in soft furnishings, World of Sofas can almost certainly get it for you. If you’re the type who loves discovering unexpected deals in a cosy store atmosphere, visit their stores and keep a sharp look-out for their special promotions, one-off discounts and their soon to be launched on-line store. Everything including the kitchen sink
Bathrooms, bedrooms and of course… the kitchen room Established in 2004, The Kitchen Room in Estepona has stood its ground through a wavering global economy. Home & Lifestyle recently visited the showroom to gain an insight into their success and discovered that a large part of the business also specialises in bathrooms, bedrooms and total renovation projects. “I think one major reason our company is still here after more than 8 years, even in an economic climate that has hit this industry hard, is our staff, customer service and client satisfaction.” says Ian. “We’re a higher-end showroom for our product quality, but we’re structured to help people meet their budgets and with the assurance of guarantees and warranties. Our suppliers are well-established, internationally recognised brands — Symphony Kitchens, Nobilia Kitchens, Falcon Rangemaster, Neff, Bosch, Siemens and Franke to name a few — and our excellent relationship with suppliers enable us to give our clients not only the confidence they need in our business, but also reassurance that the products we sell have the backing of the manufacturer.” Rebecca provides the designing and planning
service and along with the personable and knowledgeable sales approach at The Kitchen Room, which ranges from new bathrooms and kitchens to major renovations, this friendly company is carefully structured to meet every client’s requirement. “Our job is not to impose our style on people, but to let individuals express their own style without making mistakes,” says Rebecca. “I regularly attend residential training courses with our suppliers to keep me informed on the latest products and developments in the market. During a recent major project in madrid, supplier Symphony were so interested in the scale of the project that their overseas export manager flew over to observe and report back on Symphony’s new product being used for the first time in Spain. The Kitchen Room’s commitment to excellence continues after the contract, planning and design stage. From the management of the building team and delivery to the timing and completion of the project, Director Andrew mitchell’s task is just beginning. “I quite often take my work home with me to ensure that I fully understand the client’s requirements and to scrutinise the finalised plans so that I
know where every nut and bolt is going. my standards, and those of my staff and suppliers are high, and when not on-site, I am constantly emailing clients with project updates, regular reports and photos of the work in progress. I believe that’s why virtually 99 percent of our business is word of mouth. I make sure our clients get fair pricing and the best quality for their money because they trust us to do that.” Success really does comes down to three things — customer service, client satisfaction and quality. TIMOTHY OULTON’S NEW DARING, AUTHENTIC COLLECTIONS.
This year, Timothy Oulton has introduced a range of stunning new products to his collection. Highlights include the stunning Saddle Chair, inspired by the traditional horse’s saddle, the Boarding School cabinets – made of reclaimed pine sourced from old UK buildings - as well as the Slabby sofa, a modular system of ultra-comfortable leather pieces. Additionally, a stunning new range of kitchen furniture has been introduced including cabinets, a butler’s pantry, a solid oak island and wine racks. Inspired by timeless, classic design and artisanship throughout the ages, Oulton succeeds in creating pieces which combine his love of vintage, his knowledge of antiques and his desire to create innovative, relevant pieces of luxury furniture for the contemporary consumer. Driven by an ongoing commitment to traditional hand craftsmanship, timeless designs provide inspiration for a fresh perspective, resulting in uniquely authentic and distinctive pieces that exude the perfect balance of tradition and modernity. This perfect balance between tradition and innovation is evident across all collections. The celebrated mars chair is
a primary example of Timothy’s trademark style. Retaining a 1930s proportion, the chair is made more contemporary by the unexpected combination of hand-moulded metal and distressed, vintage leathers. The new saddle chair is another example: equestrian saddles provide the starting point for an altogether new design, which at the same time captures an authentic equestrian heritage. The craftsmanship that goes into achieving the unique luxury aesthetic that has become synonymous with Timothy Oulton designs is second to none. For example, each piece in the stunning Trunk collection requires a minimum of 72 hours to complete, while the Kensington three-seater sofa contains 1,700 nails which are all individually handapplied. timothyoulton.com El Corte Inglés Capricho Blvd Principe Alfonso von Hohenlohe 2 Marbella
The Timothy Oulton Trunks are a salute to antique luggage and travel goods used during a period of grace and romance. Each trunk requires numerous labour hours to complete, from nailing and polishing studs to exterior finishes and detailing and are a testament to everlasting charm and enduring beauty.

made with the meticulous craftsmanship and materials, the Saddle Chair, inspired by a traditional horse’s saddle, is spectacular to behold. Complete with actual stirrups on each side and made of handfinished and hand-stitched leather on a wood frame, this chair is a stunning addition to any space.
One of Timothy Oulton’s most celebrated designs, the mars chair transports elements of Art Deco to the future of furniture design. Retaining a 1930s proportion, the chair is updated through its unlikely combination of hand-moulded metal with distressed, vintage leathers, while the chair’s curved, bevelled lines catapult the piece to the frontiers of design.

Hubert le Gall
A visual artist by training, Hubert le Gall designs sculptural furniture whose functional nature plays a supporting role to its narrative or abstract form. He uses materials as diverse as bronze, plaster, resin, wood, glass and ceramics to invent an original bestiary
of furniture to populate the most beautiful interiors. His flower tables have become icons, as have the baseless lamps that so effectively convey his liking for illusion and subversion. His is a taste that works with humour to celebrate the emotional relationship with objects he imbues with souls of their own. This is the free signature style of a truly independent designer who plays not only with whimsicality and subversion, but also with lines and colours, downstrokes and upstrokes, presence and absence. www.hubertlegall.fr

mAISON&OBJET 2012 DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
Humberto and Fernando Campana
Few designers or artists have managed to capture the wild, chaotic, explosive energy of Latin America like double-act Fernando and Humberto Campana, and the furniture they have made over the last 25 years is a better evocation of multiculturalism, an environmental conscience and a sense of quirkiness. Humberto graduated with a law degree, but early on abandoned that path and set up a small studio of hand-made products in the early 80’s after attending terracotta and iron sculpture workshops. In 1984, he joined forces with Fernando, who studied architecture, to help him deliver a large order and launched Estudio Campana. Their first real collaboration was on two iron chairs, Negativo and Positivo, for a series called Desconfortaveis (meaning “the uncomfortables”), which they exhibited in 1989. Since then, they are among the most celebrated partnerships in contemporary design, recognised by their style — a muscular and complex blend which incorporates brash and dirty colour; natural, unusual and often recycled materials. Hundreds of metres of rope or fabric can go into producing one impossible-looking woven piece.
Located in an old two-storey warehouse in the central Santa Cecília neighbourhood, Estudio Campana in Sao Paulo, work with many international companies in industrial and interior design. In addition to designs for international manufacturers of furniture, lighting and home accessories, they have also designed for shoe brand melissa, collaborated with Lacoste on a redesign of the brand’s iconic shirt in 2009 and have designed jewellery for H Stern – as well as more “serious” artistic endeavours. The majority of creations coming out of their Sao Paulo studio consist of custom-made one-off objects for the home. The Campanas’ “Favela” and “Vermela” armchairs, both produced by the Italian furniture manufacturer Edra, the “Banquete” armchairs created by hand in small series in their Sao Paulo- based studio, as well as their inflatable table or the “Plastico Bolha” easy chair made of bubble wrap, rapidly became icons of contemporary design. Nowadays, their creations integrate permanent collections of renowned cultural institutions such as the moma in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Vitra Design museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany and the museum of modern Art in Sao Paulo. In 2008 they were honoured with the Designer of the Year award in 2008 by Design miami. www.campanas.com.br

iSalone Trends Design has had to grapple with a pretty swinging financial crisis over the last few years. In 2012, however, rather than giving in to doom and gloom, the sector represented by the 2012 Saloni has taken a design/production approach to the situation, adapting supply to a demand that has not only shrunk but altered. There has been a revisiting of past catalogues, with an intelligent reissues of enduring pieces that has turned into a real re-reading, in an attempt to make the pieces smaller, easier to transport. “Rappel à l’ordre” (Call to order) is clearly one of this season’s winning themes, almost as if a decision had been made to avoid what might, these days, be seen as morally unacceptable provocative designs, outweighing any aesthetic issues. One interesting consequence of this phenomenon is the reappraisal of the designer, no longer seen as a planner working for the good of his or her company, but as a “media star.” The great names of the design world were obviously present at the 2012 Saloni, but the emphasis has shifted from the person to the product. The new trends at the 2012 Saloni clearly evidence a sophisticated attention to material. Every project evolves in a specific material, respecting its intrinsic qualities and peculiarities, such as wood and lightness Fabric has reached an all-time high in terms of importance, not so much in terms

Comic strip irony: Elena manferdini’s “Tracery” table for Driade. but as a totally innovative typology and a few deliberately “neutral” and therefore universal objects, in terms of their potential use and interpretation. What other common factors are inherent in 2012 furniture design? One of the most obvious things has to be nostalgia. Nostalgia for a lost status quo. The strange thing is that, for every designer, this putative era refers to a different decade, the 40s, 50s and 80s. These are gentle reminiscences, inspiration for a personal take, unlike the actual reproductions of work by the great masters of the past, now a major furniture design sector in its own right. Still in a nostalgic vein, but as applied to intimate bourgeois settings, there is a wealth of proposals for beds, not just from companies specialising in furniture of this kind, such as Flou in primis with the Ermes collection by Rodolfo Dordoni, but from new outlets, such as the structured Flexform range of sofas. Generally speaking, it is probably true to say that there is a kind of literary take on furniture design. The objects are narrated in a vocabulary that ranges from comic strip irony to a nod to the history of architecture.

A sinuous, flexible and soft leaf bending on itself: architect Giancarlo Zema was inspired by this vision to create his extraordinary design collection of living solutions - table and chair - for Avanzini Group.
French Bull shatterproof tableware. www.amazon.co.uk The link between the indoors and outdoors has never been more popular or practical. With the wonderful warm summers we are lucky to experience, outdoor rooms are essential when expanding your living space. No longer is the outdoor space a simple table with chairs under an umbrella. Today the outdoor space is an extension of the home, allowing you to walk easily between the two with walls, or lack of, being the major difference. Outdoor lounge rooms, dining rooms and even outdoor kitchens make sense. Having the choice to select from an indoor lounge room or outdoor lounge room ads flexibility to the way your home functions, which increases its value to you and your family. An outdoor kitchen and dining area can cater for a more informal gathering, giving all members of the family the opportunity to be together, while doing what they all enjoy best. manufacturers of outdoor products have fullyembraced the cocooning trend, making it possible to bring nearly every aspect of indoor living to the great outdoors, no matter what budget. Creating an effective outdoor room requires a little forethought, planning and research before you get started, but you’ll save money in the long run while getting the
look and functionality that you desire. Any fashion aficionado will tell you: It’s the accessories that make the outfit. Likewise, a well-chosen outdoor accessory, such as a fire pit, lighting and textiles, can turn even the most austere environment into an inviting outdoor oasis for entertainment, and there are more options than ever to set the stage. What’s more, you can add these stylish yet practical flourishes for a surprisingly small cash outlay. The main features of any outdoor room include a natural gas grill, a set of casual furniture and a natural gas heating product, such as a fire-pit, patio heater or a gas fireplace, to chase the chill from cooler evenings and create ambience. Natural gas fire-pits and fireplace sets have become a common choice for outdoor warmth — they burn clean, don’t produce the smoke or soot associated with wood, so no ash cleanup and you don’t have to wait for it to get hot or worry about sparking or popping embers falling onto your patio or deck. Fire-pits can have a traditional wood fire appearance or can be as elaborate as having fire surrounded by a water feature. Another popular heating option is the natural gas patio heater, which can be installed just about anywhere and can cast heat in a
wide radius. Fire-pits are good focal points to base your outdoor living area around. An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a natural gas grill and some furniture. However, outdoor kitchens have gone upscale, with a dizzying array of features and options. Stucco, tile, mosaics and stainless steel are popular finishes and can be purchased fully-finished or partially so, depending on how much of a doit-your self person you are. Before the outdoor kitchen can be built, you’ll need to pick a grill for that space, and when it comes to grilling outdoors, you have five choices: natural gas, propane, charcoal, wood or electric. But after weighing the options, natural gas wins. You may think you’ll just be grilling bratwursts and burgers outdoors, but once you start enjoying the outdoor lifestyle, chances are you’ll be bringing more of the meal preparation outside, which will require a larger, more powerful grill. New grills have more bells and whistles, including items like hot-surface ignition systems, built-in lights, infrared burners, rotisseries, smokers and multiple styles of side-burners. At least one manufacturer even has a power hood that opens by remote control. A wide range of complementary products will help you imprint your sense of style on the

OuTDOOR LIVING > outdoor room. To keep the sun at bay, umbrellas in matching or contrasting colours are popular choices. Like tables, umbrellas are getting larger and are available in octagon, square and rectangular shapes. Umbrellas can tilt to deflect the sun, and some even go up and down at the push of a button. Pergolas, awnings or shade sails over the outdoor kitchen or seating groups can define the entertainment area. Another relaxation option besides furniture is a hammock, with an optional stand that allows you to rock gently in style virtually anywhere. A water feature can add visual and aural excitement or serenity to any setting, while gaslights and torches add ambience. Wind chimes, gazing balls, statuary and extensive landscaping all should blend together to create the mood that you’re looking for — and a covered area can shelter you from the sun or rain. Completing the look is extensive landscaping to help the pool or spa flow to the outdoor kitchen, the outdoor dining room, the cosy seating area and the indoors. Carefully planted trees and shrubs can help create the illusion of a secluded environment, and plants can add splashes of colour as the seasons change. Define the entertaining space with a throw rug made from outdoor fabric and essentially you can create a mini living room right outside. Brightly coloured place mats on your outdoor table will create instant impact. Add contrasting napkins and brightly coloured plates and glasses for a beautiful table. Place small glass containers filled with brightly coloured stones, recycled glass nuggets and add an outdoor candle for dinner by candlelight. Outdoor living rooms, no matter how simple or well-appointed, become a magnetic spot for everything from the morning cup of coffee to an afternoon Sangria. make it a space you never want to leave.

OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING TIPS DECKING AND PERGOLA BY PÉRGOLAS INTERNACIONALES MARBELLA Food — Serve condiments in hollowed out red, green or yellow bell peppers. Simply cut off the tops and stems and remove the seeds from the inside of the pepper. Fill these unique containers with mustard, mayonnaise, salsa, guacamole, relish and more. Drinks — Freeze mint leaves in ice cubes to add to sparkling or still water for a cool, refreshing zing. To make the cubes last longer outside the refrigerator, set a bowl of ice inside a larger bowl filled with half ice and half water. Try carving out a watermelon lengthwise. Use the fruit for dessert and the watermelon shell as an ingenious ice bucket. Bug Control — Nothing spoils an outdoor party faster than an attack of mosquitoes or flies. Mosquito coils, citronella candles and citronella torches (that use oil) are cheap and effective methods of repelling mosquitoes, provided that conditions are not too windy. Herbs also keep the bugs away. Place small decorative pots or tied sprigs of parsley or rue on tables to deter ants. Create centerpieces of lavender or mint to discourage flies from joining the party. Décor — Create a more colourful setting by using fruit as part of your décor. Lemons and limes in a glass bowl or cylinder make an easy and vivid centerpiece. Finger bowls — Thoughtful touches such as finger bowls will be appreciated, particularly when finger-licking foods are on the menu. Fill small salad bowls with water and decorate with lemon slices and tiny flowers — that way the bowls also serve as individual floral arrangements.

Soft furnishings in your comfort zone together with satellite television and a music system by Bang & Olfsen add the finishing touches that will make your home popular with all your envious friends. Over the past few years, the casual furnishings industry has embraced deep-seating collections, making outdoor furniture just as comfortable as its indoor counterparts but durable enough to withstand the rigours of the changing seasons. You have a wide array of options, including teak, jarrah and cedar wood furniture, wicker, tubular and cast aluminum,
and even high-quality recycled plastic furniture. You don’t have to blow your budget on furniture, but you owe it to yourself and your guests to find the most comfortable furniture you can afford. The casual furniture you choose for your garden, deck, patio or pool area is an important consideration. Do you want to throw weekly barbecues with family and friends, or want a quiet lounging and relaxing area. Work out how you would like to use your space before you shop. Some outdoor spaces are used as an extension of the home, with tradi-
tional living room arrangements and fabrics that mimic those you would see indoors. Other times, outdoor spaces are treated as rugged, natural and completely different from the rest of the home. Whatever you prefer, decide on the type of space you’re trying to create, how you want to use it and what your own personal decorating tastes may be. Owning the hottest, best-looking outdoor kitchen in your neighbourhood means nothing if you don’t have comfortable places for guests to gather, eat, converse and enjoy your hospitality. many outHOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

door kitchens feature bar-height countertops and you should provide bar-height chairs where guests can visit and watch the master chef at work, but you still will need to provide comfortable dining and lounging areas. Higher dining and conversation sets also work well in places where railings, fences or balconies obstruct views. Some in the industry refer to this as “vertical living.” Choices in casual furniture have grown with the outdoor category, giving you myriad choices in furniture type, style, fabric and finishes. Don’t see what you want at your local specialty retailer? Special orders are easy and can help create the perfect look for your outdoor living room. Furniture prices can vary widely, so shop around to find the right look for your outdoor room — and your wallet. Quality furniture probably isn’t as expensive as you think. For poolside lounging, sling furniture remains your best bet. Sling furniture is lightweight, comfortable and available in a rainbow of frame finishes and fabric colours. Sling fabrics are designed to withstand repeated use while retaining their shape and colour. If you buy quality sling furniture, the slings are replaceable, so you can trade out worn slings or update the look. Although the trend in outdoor furniture definitely is toward larger pieces and more expansive seating areas, those with small patios and balconies haven’t been overlooked. Bistro tables with complementary chairs will fit perfectly on a small terrace or in an out-of-the-way garden spot to create a inviting, elegant atmosphere. The focal point of many outdoor areas is the dining set, but even the table and four-chair setup has undergone a dramatic transformation recently. Tables have becom considerably larger to accommodate more chairs, but considerate hosts know to keep a few extra comfortable folding chairs in storage for times when additional seating is required. You also can choose among many different tabletop options, from the formerly ubiquitous glass tabletop to faux stone, tile, granite, wood, wicker, solid aluminum, and wood and metal combinations. YOUR mATERIAL CHOICES There are many benefits associated with cast aluminum patio furniture. For one thing, it doesn’t rust, so you won’t have to run out and save your chairs in the middle of an impromptu rainfall. It also stands up requires little maintenance. A lot of cast aluminum furniture features a powder coating in an array of colour choices, although you will have to be careful not to chip it. Lightweight, sturdy and attractive, wicker is a popular choice for enclosed patios or outdoor spaces that are closed off from the elements. Wicker can be painted for a customised look and the seats of chairs and sofas are usually cushioned and very comfortable. However, because it doesn’t hold up well in

OuTDOOR LIVING > weather, you’ll have to bring it in every night to avoid damage. The ever popular wrought iron is heavy, substantial, gorgeous and expensive. However, if properly cared for it can last up to 30 years and only needs to be taken inside during winter, making it well worth its price. Chipping and scratches may become a problem and will require repair. Wrought iron outdoor furniture is a classic and will probably be a safe bet even years from now. Outdoor teak furniture not only looks beautiful, but is also strong and durable. This exotic wood changes colour over the years from weather and climate, but that’s part of its beauty and charm. Teak lasts an extremely long lime and doesn’t rot, mildew or warp from moisture and naturally wards off bugs. Teak doesn’t absorb heat, making it comfortable to relax in hot weather and you can leave it outside even during the winter.
Before you turn your nose up at plastic furniture keep in mind that gone are the days of the white plastic chair, plastic outdoor furniture is appealing on so many different levels. Very much en vogue it is everything it should be: futuristic, lightweight, compact comes in an array of neon colours and funky shapes thanks to molding techniques, plus not to mention durable. If it gets dirty, you can just wipe it down or give it a good washing with the hose, making it a low maintenance dream. Deep-seating pieces are popular, with a wide range of cushion fabrics, and many new and improved fabrics and materials are making it easier than ever to find furniture you’ll love. Synthetic materials are better than ever at mimicking the look of natural fibres without the upkeep. Today, it is possible to get an “a11-weather wicker” chair that is made from resin. Besides the tried-and-true water-repellent canvas, new beautiful plush fabrics are popping up onto the scene that are water repellent, mildew resistant and colour-fast. Created with revolutionary technology, these fabrics offer UV protection to resist fading, and anti-bacterial and anti-microbial characteristics to prevent the growth of mildew and fungi. Along with being stain-resistant, these new fabrics are much more durable than their cotton and canvas predecessors. It is one of the easiest ways to bring comfort, style and texture to your outdoor setting. With vivid, trendy hues, and lavish textures, it is easy to showcase your own personal style as you decorate your outdoor retreat.

Truly, it is unquestionable that stackable chairs have become one of the most useful piece of modern furniture in our society today, especially when entertaining guests can really be challenging when they come in big numbers and you only have a limited space. One of the first chairs, with the ability to stack, was the Bentwood stacking chair, developed by michael Thonet (1796-1871) which revolutionised chair production and became extremely popular, especially for commercial use, furnishing hotels and restaurants throughout Europe. But the benefits of stacking chairs became really appreciated in the after the Second World War, when Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen designed the series 7 model 3017 in 1955 and Robin Day created the very influential Polyprop stacking chair — an icon of 1960s style, and one of the most democratic modern designs of the 20th century, over 14 million chairs have since been sold 23 countries. Today the stackable chair is now available in an extensive selection of materials, colours, and design styles, very different from the worlds most popular chair in history — a single-piece, jointless, all-plastic, all-weather, inexpensive, molded stacking chair in white.

AQUATICS CENTER Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid, the Aquatics Center features three concrete supports holding up a 3,000 ton roof and more than 850,000 tiles. The Aquatics Centre’s spectacular undulating wave-like roof is 160m long and up to 80m wide – giving it a longer single span than Heathrow Terminal 5.
VELODROmE The Velodrome is one of the most sustainable venues in the Olympic Park, and the distinct double-curved cable-net roof has been designed to reflect the geometry of the cycling track, and features 16 km of cabling and 1,000 exposed timber panels, covering an area of 13,500m2. After the Games, the legacy of the Velodrome will be used by elite athletes and the local community and will include a café, bike hire and cycle workshop facilities. The 360 degree glazed concourse level in legacy offers spectators inside the Velodrome views out onto the rest of the Olympic Park and across the London skyline. The design team for the VeloPark is made up of Hopkins Architects, Expedition Engineering, and BDSP.

OCTUPUS — THE ROYAL ARTILLERY BARRACKS The Royal Artillery Barracks is the temporary venue holding the Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun Shooting competitions, in addition to the Paralympic Archery. The enclosures are clad in around PVC membrane that gives the structures their unique appearance. Vibrantly coloured openings help break-up the white facades and create tension, in addition to providing natural ventilation and light picture shows.
Called ‘The Coca-Cola Beatbox’, Pernilla and Asif’s pioneering building also acts as a musical instrument. It takes inspiration from Coca-Cola’s global platform for London 2012 – move to the Beat. The creative concept will enable people to ‘play’ the Pavilion through interacting with sounds embedded within the architecture itself. Visitors will be able to create their own beat for London 2012 by remixing sounds of Olympic sports captured for an anthem that is being created for Coca-Cola by Grammy award-winning producer, mark Ronson.

Kid-Friendly Spaces Children Will Love TRANSFORM YOUR CHILD’S SPACE INTO A CHEERY HANGOUT FILLED WITH BOLD COLOURS, PATTERNS AND FURNITURE.
68
MAY JUNE
A house where kids live is a house filled with energy, imagination, activity, and fun. Children’s spaces should celebrate that spirit of play, while addressing such practical issues as storage, safety, and kids’ changing needs, and creating an inviting, colourful and kidfriendly space is crucial to making their experience truly wonderful. There are projects that are especially fun. Ones which are designed with help from the kids themselves, the colourful preteen’s room that features furniture fashioned and made by the girl herself, and the bathroom where the walls are decorated with rubber stamps made from a little boy’s drawings. Rooms with secret compartments and kid-size features, such as a bed with a time capsule in the bedpost and custom-painted murals or premade scenes from books as wall art. Decorating your child’s space can be as much of an adventure for you as it is for your child’s enjoyment.
With today’s fabrics and leather options, it’s more than possible to put together roomfuls of furniture that can stand up to an active family life and still look fabulous with the following guidelines. Choose a style that is clean-lined and comfortable – Frills and tassels aren’t exactly practical for an active family room with little (often dirty) fingers, so whatever decorating style you choose, low-maintenance is a must. But low-maintenance doesn’t have to look cheap — think well-made, durable, and easy to clean. Choose furniture pieces that work overtime – Think multi-purpose when you shop for furniture — coffee tables with shelves and drawers underneath, or ottomans and consoles that open up for storage, and entertainment centers with lots of storage space and shelving for equipment and media. Look for durable materials – For upholstery, leather sometimes seems like a luxury, but it’s actually very durable — it easily wipes clean and ages beautifully (as long as no permanent markers are involved). For fabrics, you’ll want something that is soft, but also washable. Choose those with a flat weave, which will hold up better than lightweight or looped fabrics. Easy-care, practically stain-proof choices include vinyl, “pleather,” ultrasuede, twill, denim, velvet, wool, felt, and other natural fabrics with a touch of synthetic fiber woven in for added toughness. When purchasing upholstery, be sure to invest in a stain-resistant finish. Accessorise wisely – High shelves and mantles are great for dressing up a space while keeping little fingers at bay. Keep

your nicer accessories up top (but do make sure your bookcases or display shelves are bolted to the wall). Dress up lower shelves with several matching baskets or boxes for papers, toys, DVDs, and games. Colour and patterns – Decorating a bedroom room requires merging function with style. You want to have child-friendly fabrics and furnishings while also ensuring you have sufficient space for play time. In bedrooms, there’s no such thing as pattern overload. Combine stripes, polka dots, and prints with chenilles and cottons for a lighthearted look. Pick a two-tone palette, such as green and blue, and use several shades of each hue. A child can transform the simplest space into the most fantastic and wondrous accommodation — a castle, a space station, a cave or a tea room — where nothing is impossible and all fantasies come true. FAMILY-FRIENDLY DESIGN TIPS. • Choose a paint colour and finish that hides scuffs and stains. Semi-gloss finishes may be wiped down to clean off some items, like crayon or dirt. In a child’s room, consider painting one wall (or a portion of the wall) with chalkboard paint. This way you can deter drawing on other areas of the home. • Washable, fade-free fabrics, like Sunbrella, resist stains and moisture, so they’re perfect for curtains, covering chairs and floor pillows. • Buy durable items. It may cost a little more to buy a dependable brand, but it will pay off in the long run when Junior is using the sofa as a trampoline. • Keep spaces for the kids. It’s inevitable that toys will stray out of bedrooms and into other areas of the house. Build baskets and other storage devices into the design so there are places to quickly store items out of the way.

In Harmony with Nature ARK ARCHITECTS SOTOGRANDE, A “FUSION” BETWEEN mODERN AND CLASSIC ARCHITECTURE.
74
MAY JUNE
Southern Europe has a unique style and way of life. In the middle of the Alcornocales natural park, the untainted beauty of this enclave and continued investment into the services and infrastructure has converted Sotogrande into an international benchmark of luxury, glamour and style. Golf courses, marinas, restaurants, polo, shops, international schools and much more define a lifestyle that Ark Architects has been able to convey architecturally in its purest way by actually living this unique way of life in Sotogrande. The architectural style of ARK is defined as a “fusion” between modern and classic architecture, looking back at traditional Andalucían architecture and adapting it to the times and needs of con-
temporary life. They have a sensitive conception of space in which all the senses are activated and acknowledged where there is a clear, open space with the inner and outer interacting symbiotically. Luminous inner courtyards with columns and fountains freshen and harmonize you with its sound and natural materials. The beauty of the imperfections of handmade work make these spaces unique, personal and intimate that scream more than just a lifestyle, but a place to live. There is harmony between spaces and communication between rooms. The inner ARK architecture perfectly defines the feeling of spaciousness and lightweight structures. Open spaces allow you to view everything as a whole, living within all of the
space without visual barriers with small details that differentiate each area such as horseshoe arches leading you into another room or carved handmade doors that reveal the beauty of the courtyards. The haughty windows flood the place with light and colour bringing the garden back inside the house. In short, it is a search for harmony between each existing living area. There is a spectacular combination of different architectural styles to distinguish the rooms, giving personality to each and every one of them without losing their vision and harmony as a whole. There is a perfect symbiosis between different architectural styles to make the most of the mediterranean light. Domes, glass, wood... anything goes to create spaces and unique surroundings.
If AndalucĂa could be characterized by something it would be for its light and ARK seems to have embraced this. There is an intelligent play on light and shadows, warmth and freshness that seep into every corner of these homes. Large windows allow maximum entry of light whilst small strategically placed windows offer intimacy and privacy. Both the interior and exterior lighting take a leading role that defines the spaces giving greater splendour and personality to the project. ARK controls the light perfectly internally and externally. Everything is natural but is perfectly worked-out so that under projected the light, beautiful shapes are created. ARK in its design process pays special attention to detail using carefully selected materials. They
have a classic and contemporary style mixed with a great sense of aesthetics, elegance and functionality giving their houses their own personality. Ongoing research into many different classic materials such as iron, mortar or copper, and the application of modern techniques make spectacular results achievable in every project. This achievement is reinforced because ARK also focuses on decorating and conditioning interior spaces, not in an isolated way, but by creating a house as a whole, where the landscape, outdoor design, architecture, decoration plus much more form, when everything is put together, harmony in the home. Iron, rust, mud and other natural materials that harmonise with the exterior space offers an elegant HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

and original vision that comes with the home. Interiors with exquisite finishes with stuccoes and marbles combine with modern and sophisticated lines that make these houses represent the best of both worlds. The landscaping includes analysis, planning, design, management and monitoring of the natural and architectural environment achieving the full integration and sustainability that great architecture requires. For ARK, the landscape possesses the same importance as the house itself — all parts of the project therefore must operate and harmonise with the environment. The garden becomes an extension of the natural landscape, beautiful, solemn and peaceful, with the same natural elegance. NEW ARCHITECTURAL STYLES — NEW PROJECTS All ARK creations are modern and avant-garde with open spaces complementing the beautiful scenery and horizon that never forget the classic roots that bring elegance and sobriety to a project. A merger between the two concepts between modern and classic demonstrate a new vision in architecture. This fusion is reinforced when exterior and interior interact and harmonize to create a whole. ARK seeks out the best way possible for their villas to integrate with the surrounding landscape to form a unique and intimate home enhanced by the exquisite decoration within the home itself. ARK has a new division within their specialised studio in comprehensive interior design home projects. They present themselves as much more than a study of architecture as their projects go to another dimension. materials, structures and spaces are complemented in a symbiotic way with the interiors thus customising and integrating homes under the control and supervision of a single computer that will make your home perfectly habitable in every way. Their architects redefine the concept of architecture, landscape and your inner world. Also, they now offer ARK Interiors and ARK Landscape Division offering villas completely finished from start to finish.

PLANT HEALTH When considering healthy summer plants there are seven important issues. 1. Ensure that you purchase healthy plants in the first place. Unhealthy plants include those already affected by bugs, such as geraniums attacked by the geranium moth, plants with burnt leaves from cold spring winds and forced plants susceptible to insect and fungal attacks. 2. Ensure that the microclimate of your garden, apartment balcony or terrace is suitable for the plants. We have seen some wonderful spring gardens which are a dust bowl with few surviving plants by the end of the summer. 3. Do not co-plant drought resistant and thirsty plants. If you do the watering required by the thirsty plants can waterlog or attract fungal spores and insects to the drought resistant ones. 4. Do not over water and feed plants. Naturally grown plants tend to be healthier than the forced growth of over watered and fed plants. 5. Plant plants that have natural insect control properties or heath benefits for the family. For instance plant a lemon or rose scented geranium graveolens amongst pots of other varieties of geraniums to deter the geranium moth. Each of our books includes herb based insect and fungal solutions safe for the family, neighbours, pets and passing beneficial wildlife. 6. Use an ecological snail and slug killer such as Neudorff’s Ferramol Antilimicos to ensure that leaves or entire plants are not disfigured or totally lost. Recognise that snails and slugs can appear on apartment terraces having been brought in from the compost in pots or bags, or attached under leaves or on the sides of pots. 7. Purchase plants that are attractive as well as having human health benefits.

mICROCLImATE ISSUES
GROWING HEALTHY THINGS TO EAT
There are five main groups of summer plants to be considered, and used or not used in villa and apartment gardens. These are reflected in the practical and sensible plant lists and descriptions included in Your Garden in Spain and Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style. 1. Plants that love the sun and are not thirsty such as succulents and cacti. 2. Plants that can survive in full sun but are thirsty and therefore need watering daily or several times a day in the summer — the type of plants that wither when scorching winds blow from north Africa. These include begonias and celosias. Plants that do best in semi shade including some of the plants that you used as house plants in northern Europe such as spathiphyllum and dieffenbachia. 3. Plants that can survive in shady areas provided there is some reflected light. Such as aspidistra and tropical ferns. 4. Salt resistant plants for front line villas and apartments such as aeoniums and portulacas. We often pass a villa which has replaced a small lawn with a mass planting of colourful portulacas. The number of plants suitable for your own garden, terraces and balconies can be expanded by planting boundary, internal hedges and trees, and fitting blinds and awnings.
In our latest book Living Well from our Mediterranean Garden we describe a diverse range of edible flowers, leaves, herbs, vegetables and fruit with wellness benefits that can be harvested from Spanish gardens. Amazing crops can be grown in just a few metres and apartment dwellers can do just as well as those with large gardens. The A to Z of containers included in Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style opens up a wide range of possibilities.
LIVING WELL FROM OUR MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN Dick Handscombe
SOmE ESPECIALLY HEALTHY PLANTS many herbs can be used for making tasty and beneficial infusions as alternatives to tea and coffee with no chemical insecticides. In Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style we list our 10 favourites, which range from mint: a tasty digestive, morning awakener and hangover cure, to a garlic infusion to control insects. In recent years, more and more expatriates and Spaniards are obtaining the collection of plants available from www.dolcarevolucio.cat (info@ dolcerevolucio.cat), a charity focused on making plants, with significant health benefits, available to gardeners who have an interest in natural solutions to potential and current health problems. The plants available include: • Stevia — a sweetener alternative to saccharin and sugar and beneficial to suffers of diabetes.
• Perilla — used in Japanese Shiso raw fish dishes. Useful in preventing food poisoning and combating allergies to pollens etc. • A collection of three large leaved kalanchoes — interesting in salads and said to have anti-cancerous properties. The website gives more information and a list of regional sources of plants. The plants do well on apartment terraces as well as in gardens.
GO ECO Even if you decide not to grow edible plants do go eco in the garden. Ecological insecticides, fungicides and fertilisers are now widely available, so there is no need to resort to potentially hazardous inorganic chemical products. The benefits are cleaner air, less smelly garden sheds and garages, food without chemical residues and more resident wildlife ranging from birds to geckoes, that do a good job eating mosquitoes and other flying insects on balmy evenings. Prepare now for a great summer in the garden. © Clodagh and Dick Handscombe, www.gardeninginspain.com, march 2012.

BEFORE YOU START Always freeze the fish or seafood for at least 24 hours, in order to kill any possible Anisakis (a parasite which has a life cycle involving fish, squid and crustaceans). Anisakiasis can be easily prevented by adequate cooking at temperatures greater than 60°C or freezing. The FDA recommends all shellfish and fish intended for raw consumption be blast frozen to -35°C or below for 15 hours or be regularly frozen to -20°C or below for seven days. SUSHI ISN’T JUST EDIBLE ART, IT’S GOOD FOR YOU! The Japanese are renowned for doing things beautifully, and the principle of taking something simple and turning in to a form of visual art most certainly applies to the Japanese method of taking a little rice, decorating it with a thin slice of colourful raw fish, wrapping it with a strip of seaweed, and evolving it into the masterpiece we have come to know (and love) as sushi.
Sushi Rice
Sushi rice is sweetly vinegared, and the delicate taste goes so well with raw fish. Use short/medium grain rice and steam in a rice cooker is easiest. Wash the rice to remove the starch, and soak for at least 30 minutes before steaming.
Futomaki Sushi
Uramaki Sushi
INGREDIENTS Can of Salmon roe 50 grs of fresh Tuna 50 grs of fresh Salmon Half an avocado 3 or 4 nori algae (seaweed) Soya sauce
INGREDIENTS 100 grs of fresh salmon or tuna (or half of each) 1 avocado Crab meat 2 cans of flying fish roe or any other similar product (the black one is avruga) Nori algae (seaweed) Soya sauce
4 servings INGREDIENTS 4 servings 350g uncooked rice (Blue Dragon Japanese rice is recommended) 420 ml of water 5 tablespoons of rice vinegar (available at local Chinese supermarkets) 2 tablespoons of sugar Pinch of salt Mix the rice vinegar (use only rice vinegar), sugar and salt in a saucepan and heat to dissolve solids. When the rice is cooked, place in a hangiri, or unfinished wooden bowl and mix in the vinegar mixture. Use a spatula to mix in the vinegar with a cutting action so you don’t squash the rice grains. Fan the rice to make it shiny. Leave to cool covered with a wet cloth.
• Extend the bamboo mat over the clean counter. Place a nori algae on top with the shinny surface under and spread a thin layer of rice over it. Remember to leave the last space of algae free of rice (1 cm. approx). Use your finger to moisten this part to seal the futomaki later. • Cut the tuna and salmon in sticks of 1/2 cm. approx and place over the rice from right to left. Do the same with the avocado. • Roll the mat and close the futomaki sushi. Cut in slices and reserve in the fridge until serving. • You can play with the ingredients and make some out of shiitake mushrooms, omelette, cucumber (thinly sliced sheets, spring onions. • Place soya sauce in small bowls for dipping.
4 servings
• Extend the bamboo mat over the clean counter and place kitchen plastic film over it, on top put the nori algae. Spread the rice all over (wet your hands so that the rice doesn’t get sticky). Turn the algae and the rice upside down (now the rice is facing the plastic film). • Cut the avocado, salmon, tuna (all you want to use in the roll) and place it more or less in the middle of the algae. Roll it with the help of the bamboo mat, pressing carefully. • Take a small tray and pour the roe on top. Roll the roll over the roe so that it gets stuck to the rice. Cut in 8 pieces each roll. • Place soya sauce in small bowls for dipping.
TIPS
Wasabi
Wasabi is difficult to cultivate, and that makes it quite expensive. Wasabi also loses its flavour within 15 minutes of being made into a paste. A common substitute is a mixture of horseradish, Colman’s English mustard and green food colouring. Mix according to taste.
Use a fishmonger whom you trust to buy the ingredients fresh. Always freeze for at least 24 hours if eaten raw. Use expensive seaweed which is darker in colour, and is less likely to break when folded or rolled. Use Kikkoman or Yamasa branded soya sauce. Cover the bamboo sushi mat with plastic wrap, so that the rice will not stick to the mat. Hot, fresh, green tea is an excellent beverage to drink with your meal, as is beer or plain water. Once you make sushi or any dish that involves raw fish, consume it as soon as it is prepared, and do not refrigerate it longer than 24 hours. If refrigerating, cover with cling film so the rice does not dry out. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

knowing your diamonds BY VIKRAm BUDHRANI, ESSARDAS GROUP GIBRALTAR
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FOUR C’S Gemologists and jewellers assess the physical attributes of diamonds using the four classification system – CUT, CARAT, COLOUR and CLARITY, which enables the comparison and valuation of diamonds. CUT — The angles and proportions of a diamond. It is the only one of the four that is influenced by the human hand to cut a diamond perfectly. A craftsman will often need to cut away more than 50% of the rough diamond. The facets, when arranged in precise proportions, will maximise the fire, life and brilliance of a diamond. Cut also refers to the shape of a diamond – round, square, or pear, etc. While most of a diamond’s qualities are defined by nature, it takes a master craftsman to unlock the diamond’s true brilliance, fire and beauty. CARAT — The weight of a diamond. Often mistaken with size, carat is actually a measure of weight. Carat is a derivative of the word Carob. Carob seeds, which are surprisingly uniform in weight, were used as a reference for diamond weight in ancient civilisations. One carat can also be divided into 100 ‘points’. CLARITY — The presence of inclusions in a diamond. Inclusions are natural identifying characteristics such as minerals or fractures, occurring while the diamond
was formed. They appear in different shapes, such as crystals, clouds or feathers, most not visible to the naked eye unless magnified. The position of inclusions can affect the value of a diamond and you should consider the number, size, brightness, nature and position of inclusions. Flawless diamonds found in nature are rare, making these diamonds much more valuable. COLOUR — The degree to which a diamond is colourless. Diamonds can be found in many colours, however, the nearer a white diamond is to being absolutely colourless, the more rare and valuable it is. Graduations in colour are so subtle that intricate international grading scales have been devised to categorize these gems. Truly colourless stones, graded D are treasured for their rarity. Nature has also created diamonds in shades of blue, green, yellow, orange, and pink. Red ‘coloured fancies’ diamonds being the rarest, extremely scarce and highly treasured. For as long as diamonds and gems have been bought and sold, people have found ways to increase their value and make them more desirable through artificial enhancement. Diamonds are routinely subjected to treatment processes to improve their colour, clarity or both. When purchasing a diamond request the diamond grading report or Certificate (aka the 5th C) to know what you are really buying.

The “Saffron Suite”
Owners Christian and Ina Krug first teamed up with acclaimed German architect moritz Theden for The Great Getaway Marrakech Hotel & Spa to open on the outskirts of marrakech at the end of this year. Their second venture has transformed a traditional moroccan riad into an intimate six-room hotel for world travellers. Here, guests are invited to immerse themselves in the medina’s community, thanks to Ina Krug’s close relationships with the locals. Located in the heart of marrakech’s historic Sidi Ben Slimane quarter, the palace has been painstakingly refurbished to preserve its traditional architectural style. It is filled with an elegant mix of exquisite furnishings handmade by local craftsmen from the souk that surrounds the property. Immediately upon entering the property via the grand circular courtyard with its intricate carvings, flowing sheer white curtains, subdued lighting and star-shaped fountain, guests are enveloped by a sense of warmth and mysticism which is unmistakably moroccan. The interiors are a celebration of traditional design, from the walls plastered in the silky Tadelakt style to the custom-made furnishings sourced from local artisans and cabinetmakers. The public spaces of the hotel are dotted with intimate alcoves and stone fireplaces, and illuminated by flickering candles and lanterns. Each of the four deluxe rooms and two suites is named after fragrant scents that linger in the air: lavender, mint, saffron, pomegranate, cinnamon and ginger. The design palette pays tribute to the colours of the city, such as desert sand and ma-
jorelle Blue, the same colour chosen by Yves Saint Laurent for his marrakech house. ROOm WITH A VIEW For all the splendour of the property’s interiors, perhaps the most captivating space of all is to be found on the rooftop. The Great Getaway medina boasts a terrace where white sun loungers provide the perfect perch from which to drink in the panoramic views over the Koutoubia mosque and surrounding Atlas mountains. In the evening guests are invited to indulge in homemade moroccan delicacies to the backdrop of the magnificent sunsets for which marrakech is famed. WELCOmE TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Since moving to marrakech, Ina Krug has cultivated strong friendships with many of the local tradesmen and souk owners and is thus perfectly positioned to offer truly authentic experiences. She works exclusively with handpicked local guides in order to provide her guests with an unparalleled glimpse into the real marrakech, far removed from the standard tourist fare. From bargain hunting in hidden spots of the souk to motorbike tours in the Atlas mountains, The Great Getaway medina offers a level of personal service which leaves no wish unfulfilled. LOCATION AND RATES The Great Getaway medina has a prime location that enables guests to lose themselves in the historic, winding alleyways of the souks. HOTEL BARCELó RAVAL
Avant-Garde Ellipse A DESIGNER HOTEL WITH THE BEST PANORAmIC VIEWS, IN THE HEART OF BARCELONA CITY. 100
MAY JUNE
This the fourth hotel that Barceló Hotels & Resorts operates in Barcelona, construction of which has entailed investment to the tune of 35 million Euros. The Barceló Raval, with four stars and 186 bedrooms, is particularly noteworthy because of its unique oval structure, elegant avant-garde design, minimalistic interior and the spectacular panoramic views that it offers over the whole of Barcelona. Strategically located in the Rambla del Raval, the most fashionable area in the centre of Barcelona, the singular and modern hotel project was managed by architects Josep maría Blanco and Bartolomé Cursach (Construction and Development of Barceló Hotels & Resorts) in collaboration with CmV Arquitectes, and is an excellent example of the urban transformation and economic revitalisation of one of the most genuine areas of the ‘ciudad condal’. Touted as the “central gem of the city,”
Barceló Raval striking elliptical floors are built around a concrete core which stands 37.5 metres high, crowned with an outdoor terrace with a solarium and pool, and encased in a light reflecting stainless steel wire mesh over a façade of insulated glass which limits the sunlight and noise pollution. One of the hotel’s main attractions is a splendid 360 degree view over the whole city of Barcelona, which allows the viewer to make out the perimeter of the city, at four cardinal points. The interior space of the Barceló Raval is the work of renowned designer Jordi Gali, and is characterised by minimalism and contrasts, a play of wallpaper and the colours fuchsia, green, white and black, and incorporating some of the best designer names in one space such as Jaime Hayon, marcel Wanders for moooi and Vitra. The open plan ground floor lobby and B-Lounge reflects an urban and cosmo-
politan concept, a riot of colour, shapes, and sizes to create an environment of surreal playfulness — paired furniture in pinks and reds with madcap lamps, flocked wallpapers, and Bisazza-covered feature walls. The elevator core integrates a small and colourful reading room (a library full of books on the past history and present day of the neighbourhood) with hot pink padded walls combined with an upholstered couch that completes the space. Centrepieces of pink flowers on clear acrylic stems, that seem to float, by local design firm Wanda Barcelona adorn the tables. The floor is coated with silver triangular ceramics which reflects the LED lighting hidden in the ceiling. The ceiling of the lobby area features 2,200 Basotect® ceiling cylinders made from BASF’s exible melamine resin foam. Basotect® is exible, open cell foam made from melamine resin and has multiple design worthy properties, including high sound-absorption capacity, flameretardant characteristics, high-temperature resistance, low weight and thermal insulation. On the above floors, 186 rooms are arranged around interior corridors that surrounds the core and the eleva-
tor. Clearly laid-out, the bedrooms boast wide, large windows with motorised curtains so that guests can contemplate the city. The bathroom has been taken from its traditional concept, and made into a unique sculptural element. This piece with the multiple function of shower, sink and counter top to cabinet and fridge made entirely of white Corian, visually separates the bedroom from the bathroom but allows visual transparency. The lighting is resolved throughout the hotel with RGB LED technology and luminosity is increased in the corridors with large mirrors. Like the Barceló málaga, the Barceló Raval boasts an original B-Lounge, the concept of a lobby open to the city, introduced by Barceló Hotels & Resorts in some of its best designer hotels, which has a capacity of 125 people inside, and also a terrace that overlooks the square manuel Vazquez montalban square, and is one of the coolest places in Barcelona. Furthermore, the hotel collaborated with Antonio Bellés Vidal, current Chef and owner of the prestigious restaurant ‘Lola Rojo’ in London, as gastronomic consultant, in order to offer the most innovative and delicious tapas in the B-Lounge.

THE WILD SIDE: HONDA FURY Choppers have been a part of the motorcycling scene for decades, but for the most part they’ve occupied a small niche on the farthest edges of the sport. The first such machines were cobbledup home-builts with a reputation for being crudely wrought and uncomfortable to ride. Since then choppers have evolved into rolling art, with true customs commanding a very high price. The stunningly creative Honda Fury is a machine packed with radical lines, pure undiluted chopper essence, and a genre of motorcycle that simply feels right, looks right, sounds right and goes straight to the heart of core enthusiasts. Long, lean and mean, stretching nearly six feet from axle to axle, this machine is a real head-turner. And once you settle into the saddle, turn the key and fire up that big 1312cc V-twin, you’ll know this is the bike you’ve been dreaming about. The most obvious attraction to the Fury centres on its raked-out chopper styling: high-mount
steering head that gives the frame a see-through, open-air look with plenty of breathing room between the tank/upper frame and the front cylinder head; slim and long fuel tank perched up high; ultra-low 26.7 inch seat height; big-time rake; fat 200 series rear tire paired with a slim 21 inch front wheel; a condensed, hard-tail look to the rear end; and a stretched wheelbase. Perhaps equally important is that a close-up inspection of the Fury reveals remarkably clean lines, a Spartan return to basics plus superior attention to detail that together create the distinct impression of a full-on hand-built custom bike, but at a mere fraction of the cost. Although stunning and daring in its visuals, the Fury is great fun to ride, with a feel and sound that place the rider squarely in the chopper domain. LIVE TO RIDE, RIDE TO LIVE: HARLEY DAVIDSON When you think of Harley Davidson, what comes to mind? Well, motorcycles for sure. But if that
wasn’t your first thought, we’d argue that it was probably an open desert highway, leather boots and gear, and a rumbling exhaust that could make a jet engine seem all too meek. We’d also argue that Harley Davidson symbolises rebellion, youth, freedom, and open possibilities. It’s an image created by the people. The riders. When you buy a Harley Davidson it’s not just the bike you’re buying into it’s the experience, a result of enthusiasts that made Harley Davidson one of the most recognisable and mythological brands in the world. Low-down and beefy, the 2012 Dyna® Wide Glide® Harley Davidson motorcycle is all about attitude, with old-school chopper looks and the comfort of a modern ride. Its tough, dark styling and retro feel, along with a retro price tag, give riders the confidence to sit low and stretch out. The Wide Glide® is raw and true to its roots with a chopped rear fender, black rims on 40-spoke laced wheels, a black tank console, “Tommy Gun” exhaust, beefy, raked-out forks and a swept back

BE A PART OF HISTORY IN THE
Gibraltar Diamond Jubilee Flotilla There may be over a thousand miles between them, but Gibraltar isn’t going to miss out on London’s Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant and is instead bringing its own version to the Rock. Taking place on monday 4 June, a day later than the London event, hosts Ocean Village marina are aiming for 100 participating vessels to make the event a patriotic and fitting celebration of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. Ros Astengo, Event Organiser from Ocean Village, explains, “When we learnt that there was going to be a flotilla up the Thames on 3 June to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee we thought - why not do the same in Gibraltar? The idea was touted amongst boat owners here in Ocean Village marina and then, after a positive response, we took the proposal to the Government and the Governor’s office who offered unanimous support. Aside from enthusiasm on the Rock, we expect plenty of Brits and other nationalities along the Costa to come and join in the Jubilee pomp and circumstance.” Ros continues, “Apart from the spectacle at sea, with all manner of vessels dressed in streamers and Union Jacks, we’re also encouraging as much onshore support as possible with horn-tooting and flag-waving most welcome. The bars and restaurants within Ocean Village will be laying on special meals and cocktails and there will be a live band and DJ chill-out music in the evening. For crew members taking part in the flotilla, the soon-to-be-opened Champagne Bar on Leisure Island will host celebration drinks. Then, as the sun dips beneath the horizon, the beacon on top of the Rock will be lit up – a magical end to a special day.” The Flotilla will depart from Ocean Village marina at midday on monday and sail from the western side of the runway to the eastern and then make the return journey. It is free for all vessels to participate and there is no competitive element to the event, simply a wonderful way to show our appreciation for the Queen and enjoy some of the London spirit down here in the Gibraltar sunshine. If you don’t own a boat, or indeed fancy making a day of corporate hospitality for your colleagues, why not consider a yacht charter from one of Gibraltar’s many licensed operators. For a list of these providers, along with a full schedule of music events, food and drink offers and the timetable for the all-important skipper’s briefing — keep an eye on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/JubileeFlotillaGibraltar To register your yacht for the event fill in the form here - www.oceanvillage.gi/flotilla or to reserve a berth for an overnight stay at Ocean Village call the Pier Office on +350 200 73300 or email pieroffice@oceanvillage.gi
