FROM THE EDITOR >
ABOUT THE COVER FIORELLINA, Table Lamp Designer: Nigel Coates for Slamp S.p.A.
Finally, a time of tranquillity sets in after the hustle-and-bustle of the last few months as the hot summer days move to cooler temperatures. With that in mind, in this issue we once again look at stunning new trends in home décor, from brilliant lighting to add drama and sparkle to your living areas to accessories and home accents in a rich palette of autumn’s colourful hues. We also take a look at the latest trends in fabrics and patterns, florals to classic geometry, add a touch of pizzazz with breathtaking pieces of wall art and create a personal design statement with contemporary rugs. Moving outside, we feature some must-have accessories to extend your outdoor living season, plus state-of-the-art
One of Coates’ classics for Slamp, the Fiorella asserts an audacious side to nature: oversized leaves and flowers surround the lamp to bring softness into the home. The table lamp is part of the Fiorella Collection designed by Nigel Coates for Slamp which includes a floor lamp, suspension lamps and wall light. This handsome addition to any living room is made with Cristalflex® and Opalflex® and is available in three finish options - white, fume or gold. The table lamp was voted “Product of the year” in the lighting industry and won the “Homes and Gardens Classic Design Award”. www.www.slamp.it

Bang & Olufsen takes cinematic entertainment to a new high Designed by David Lewis Designers, BeoVision 12-65 offers a completely new design expression, which has a very thin and light appearance that truly innovates the heavier plasma concepts seen so far. Besides using an ultra slim NeoPDP panel with the latest and greatest in plasma technology, two aluminium profiles bent inward in a V-shape – one in black and one in natural high-gloss polished aluminium — create an optical illusion giving the TV a thin, light and extremely elegant visual expression. The BeoVision 12-65 includes: • Bang & Olufsen’s ICEpower technology in the Integrated BeoVision 12 centre speaker design which consists of five custom made speaker units. • Full 7.1 surround sound module, which allows you to connect a vast number of speakers in almost any sound configuration you may want. • Ultra slim NeoPDP panel, which includes new phosphors with a very short retention time giving
improved 3D performance and a much better motion performance in 2D. • Automatic colour management to compensate for the effects of ageing. • A robotic arm featuring a camera located underneath the screen, hidden behind the loudspeaker grill. • Automatic Picture Control to sense the level of incident light from the room and dynamically alters the picture adjustments accordingly. Placed in the upper right hand corner, the light sensor is designed to pick up the lighting conditions of the room at a 360 degree angle. The wall bracket is integrated into the rear cabinet, which means it hardly adds to the thickness of the TV at all. Dimensions: 161 x 96.4 x 6.4 cm/68 kg. PAD is a charitable organisation that was founded in 1996 and since then, together with voluntary help, the committee and members of PAD have run a successful shelter for the homing of abandoned cats and dogs (both within Spain, Europe and the shipment of dogs to Scandinavia). They have had many fundraising events throughout to year to try and maintain the charity and to also give a high standard of care to the animals within their shelter. During the last couple of years many charities, such as theirs have suffered due lack of funds caused by recession and a growing number of abandoned animals which have been bought to PAD due to personal circumstances or abandoned. It is always a distressing sight, but with the love and devotion of their helpers they are managing to survive the crisis. At present they have 48 dogs and 200 cats looking for homes, a number they cannot increase on. PAD are in desperate need of funds and would appreciate any donation even if it is a few Euros to ease their burden and to survive during the bad months ahead. Please visit www.padcatsanddogs.org and give your support. Join their Facebook page to keep updated on money raising events.

A New Look with Inspiration from the Past The new BoConcept 2013 collection We are in a time of transition and when the future is unsure we react in different ways. Maybe we look back to the well-known, or maybe we choose to look forward with optimism. Whatever the reaction, BoConcept translates the trends of the time in their new collection for 2013.
A collection that is inspired by one of this season’s trends of longing for old virtues and traditions by looking back to the 50’s and 60’s with the American ‘Mad men’ TV series as the perfect reference. The sofa is comfortable yet still elegant and the choice of material defines the look in the room — exclusive black leather for that formal and elegant look or a petrol blue for a more feminine setting. The coffee table combines 2 types of wood and is used as display for elegant glass vases and designer books. Both armchairs and dining chairs have a classic, clean look and the focus on comfort is high. Colours are deep and mature and of course beautifully coordinated for a stylish, well-balanced look. The other strong trend this coming season is a look based on the German Bauhaus style with all its graphic lines and signal colours. It is casual, optimistic and playful and mixes prints, patterns and

colours in unexpected ways. This trend in the the new collection is defined by the use of accessories — a personal mix of cushions in funny shapes and edgy prints in the modular sofa, quirky sculptures in natural materials and metal lamps with an industrial look. Or how about a bookcase in a bright blue combined with other wall units in white to further add some freshness to this casual, inspirational look. No matter if you are in for the old virtues and the classic look or you feel adventurous with bright colours and humorous sculptures you will find lots of great inspiration in your BoConcept store, online on boconcept.es or in their new inspiring design catalogue. The Philipp Plein Store’s style is unmistakable in each and every detail of a space that is cosy, dynamic, luminous and in perfect harmony with the sunny Mediterranean character of Marbella. Designed by the architectural firm AquiliAlberg, the store looks straight out onto the sea with its large shop windows. As in all of the Philipp Plein flagship stores, precious materials have been selected for its interior decoration. The predominant colour is white, in refined contrast with a lava stone flooring. Storage and display elements alternate lacquered finishes with chrome-plated metal and ostrich skin to create a pleasing interplay of voids and solid volumes. The entire line of Philipp Plein products for him and for her, along with the accessory collection, are showcased in the spacious light-flooded interiors of the boutique. Its interior design combines the sleek minimal style of the Philipp Plein Home Collection with the unconventional and rebellious luxury of the collections created by this Swiss signature brand. A distinctive feature of the Philipp Plein world is the unmistakable skull studded with CristallizedTM Swarovski Elements, presented in a glass showcase, now fully-incorporated in the store concept of this brand. Including Marbella, the Philipp Plein flagship stores now total 11, and are also present in Monte Carlo, Cannes Saint-Tropez, Forte dei Marmi, Vienna, Dusseldorf, Moscow, Baku and Kitzbühel.

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER
In the summertime when the weather is fine Euro leaders take their break, so after six months during which the unwelcome financial spotlight had shone on Spain, it swung in late August back towards Greece. It was not that investors no longer had any concerns about Spain, more that they find it difficult to panic about more than one thing at a time. With most of Europe — and most European political leaders — on their summer holidays investors recognised that there could be no realistic expectation of anybody doing anything to move the situation forward until September. Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank, did his best to improve things in late July. At a speech in London he said the ECB would do “whatever it takes” to preserve the Euro, “and believe me, it will be enough”. A week later he reiterated his position after the monthly meeting of the ECB governing council. The Bank and the EU bailout funds would, together, apply their theoretically unlimited spending power to support the price of Euroland sovereign bonds, thereby lowering borrowing costs for Spain and Italy. Investors were quite impressed by the strategy and the Euro strengthened in early August. In the space of little more than a week it rose by nearly three cents against the pound and by a cent and a half against the US dollar. But then it all went cold. In the following fortnight the euro made no further ground against the dollar and it fell back by two cents against the pound. In late August the euro was a cent and a half higher against the pound and two and a half cents higher against the dollar than its position a month earlier. Compared with its levels at the beginning of June the euro was unchanged against the dollar and two cents weaker against the pound. As they have during most of the last couple of years, investors are paying more attention to the political manoeuvrings in the euro area than they are to the minutiae of economic data. As long as the figures announced are within shouting distance of analysts’ forecasts they tend not to make waves. Only a handful of times have off-base ecostats sent currencies adrift. On one occasion Germany and France reported better than expected figures for economic growth in the second quarter of the year. Investors became excited that Euroland as a whole might avoid
a negative reading but it was not to be; euro area gross domestic product shrank by -0.2% in Q2. At another time, Britain managed to deliver, on successive days, three sets of economic data that exceeded analysts’ forecasts. Inflation, unemployment and retail sales were all more positive than expected for the Pound. Sterling went up on the news but was unable to hang onto its gains. Latest news also confirmed that the UK was far from recovering as UK disappointed with the release of data on public finances and factory orders. Unexpectedly public sector net borrowing went up by £.6bn so the UK wants its people to spend more!! Not sure where the money is going to come from particularly when you consider UK banks are considering charging you for the “benefits” you get with your UK bank account. So investors spend their time watching Brussels, Madrid, Frankfurt, Berlin and Athens for hints of what might — or might not — be coming next. In the immediate future they will be keen to find out whether Prime Minister Antonis Samaras can persuade Euroland’s movers and shakers to relax the repayment terms for Greece’s bailout borrowings. The next scheduled big deal is the ECB governing council meeting in Frankfurt on 6 September. Having been wound up to expect overwhelming force from the ECB in support of Spanish and Italian government bonds, they will be looking for something serious. Experience suggests they will probably not get it, and that Sig Draghi will simply restate his master plan with a warning that national politicians must get on with their budget reforms and banking union. That same experience also suggests a meek response from investors, who have become accustomed to living on a diet of jam tomorrow. Currency Range During the Month Currency High Low £ to US$

BASED IN MIJAS, THE STORE IS THE ONLY ONE IN ANDALUCÍA BUT IS AMONGST 250 IN THE WORLD ACROSS 58 COUNTRIES. HOME & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE CAUGHT UP WITH JAN PETERSEN, ONE OF THE OWNERS OF THE MIJAS STORE, TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THIS TRENDSETTING BRAND AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT. 40
SEPTEMBER OCTOBER
Danish owner, Jan Petersen, together with two other Danish investors, opened the BoConcept store in Mijas four and a half years ago. Jan’s background was in textiles whilst his business partners were from the home decoration sector, and together with a highly-trained team, they believe that it is this combination of expertise and experience that has made this BoConcept franchise the success it is today with plans to open more stores across the coast once they have found the ideal location. BoConcept understands that your house is a statement about you as a person and how you live. They realise that you like to live a certain way with the objects around you being the way you want them to be so that it makes your life easier and completely personal to you which is why all of their furniture can be fully-customised to your needs. BoConcept started out as a small furniture factory in Herning, Denmark. Started by two talented Danish craftsmen, Jens Ærthøj Jensen and Tage Mølholm, their vision was to make high quality furniture that was not only beautiful but also highly practical and good value for money. All of the manufacturing is still done in Denmark and then transported to the relevant shop ensuring consistency in quality and workmanship. Jan states, “The whole idea behind BoConcept is to tailor-make furniture to perfectly suit the living space and the requirements of the person living in that space. The shop itself serves as an ideas centre where the furniture on display can be remodelled in any way necessary to cater for the needs of the customer whether it is the colour, material or size offering limitless design possibilities. We offer a free 3D computer-aided design service in the shop itself so that the customer can visualise exactly what their room could look like redesigned by us.” The Scandinavians are renowned worldwide for their cutting-edge style and pioneering ideas within the world of decoration and this shop is testament to that – urban, spacious, well laid out with clean lines and exciting product ranges spread. Their staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and not overbearing and “salesy”, making you feel instantly at ease. Jan is softly-spoken and comes across as very honest with enormous drive and pride in his work. He lives and breathes the BoConcept brand with his wife Susanne who also works in the shop. “We love to travel and observe the lifestyles of other nationalities. We like to read their magazines and glean ideas and inspiration from the countries we visit.” This open-mindedness is very evident in the way the shop is presented with the upper level filled with other product ranges that are symbiotic to the BoConcept brand with names such as Muubs.com, Fatboy, Kartell and Cane-Line. This idea of stocking other product lines within the store is unique to the BoConcept franchises but it seems to work well. Decorative lighting fixtures are the “jewellery” of a room. Not only do they add interest and drama to a space, but they provide balance and artistic beauty. The choices in styles are virtually endless: antique or revival styles, retro designs, classic icons and modern-day originals. But we also need recessed lighting fixtures, which remain functional, and are now more energy-efficient and better-looking. Combining these two types of fixtures allows you to create any mood imaginable. With the addition of table and floor lamps, lighting can be designed to enhance, emphasize or tone down certain features of a room. Lighting manufacturers have been hard at work to bring a wealth of new fixture designs to the marketplace as well as amazing reproductions of classic lighting designs of the early to mid-1900s. Arts and crafts, art deco, arte moderne, midcentury modern and early utilitarian industrial warehouse styles are hot. Look for these themes at companies such as Aranda Iluminación, CasaSola and Gavira. It is easy to be safe and select an entire lighting suite from one manufacturer’s line. But let’s be honest, that approach can be boring and contrived. Give yourself artistic license by pairing unexpected styles together. MUSE A palette of fun and bright colours, this collection of lamps features soft, flexible lines which come to life in a vast range of colourful vibrations. At the same time, we do always say that “restraint is key,” so let’s not go overboard with our selections and make a design faux-pas by pairing styles that create discord. Pair a piece of furniture from one period with a lighting fixture from another or a modern chest with the intricate detailing of a pair of art nouveau light sconces. This juxtaposition has great balance and melds old with new, a true design forward statement. Don’t be afraid to experiment and break out of the same-old, same-old. HERE’S HOW TO SELECT LIGHT FIXTURES FOR A SPACE Open your favourite design magazines and look closely at the light fixtures in photos of professionally designed spaces. You might be amazed at what you have been missing. Clip photos of specific lighting fixtures that attract you; the more you clip, the better. When clipping photos, sit in the space you are designing or use the floor plans and photos of the furnishings for the space for inspiration and design continuity. Place your collection of photos on a table or tape them on the wall so you can get a good display of your potential selections. Zero in on how the fixtures work together, or do not work together. Discard the photos that don’t look harmonious with the room. By process of elimination, you will soon find yourself standing in front of the winners. But don’t finalise your selections yet. Remember the concept of “layering”. Not only does layering give more options for how the space is lit, but differ-

ent fixtures are more suited to ambient, task or accent lighting. For example, recessed or track lights work well for accent lighting, linear fluorescents for under cabinets, in coves or on each side of a bathroom mirror are excellent for task lighting and decorative fixtures with CFLs work well for ambient light. Often a fixture may do double duty; the accent lighting may provide task light, the task lights may provide enough ambient light, or the architectural coffer lighting may provide ambient light. This layering strategy is critical to creating a rich visual environment. The final step is of utmost importance: the finishes. Verify that the lighting styles you selected are available in the desired finish so that they will help to further unify the space.

BEFORE YOU BUY Scale is very important. Use painter tape to mark out the exact size of the fixture on your wall or ceiling. Wall sconces work best when they relate to an architectural element or key furniture piece within a room. They can flank doorways, windows, built-in bookcases, a mirror, a console, chest or bed. They can lead up a staircase, or be placed strategically down a long hallway. Mount wall sconces at a height no lower than the eye level of a man who is 5 feet, 10 inches tall. This is not a hard and fast rule. The sconces should be placed at their best viewing height. Suspended fixtures, such as chandeliers and pendant lights, are perfect for grounding a space. Place

them above a dining table, in the foyer above a centre table, over a kitchen island, in a great room with cathedral ceilings, above a staircase, over a bed, or in a powder room. Keep in mind the height of the suspended fixture — you do not want to have anyone hit their head while passing under them. A good rule of thumb is to suspend any fixture over a table no lower than 44 inches above the top of the table to allow for a centred arrangement, so as to not block the line of sight for those dining at the table. Add a decorative ceiling medallion for more drama. Semiflush mount fixtures are perfect for rooms with lower ceiling heights. All rooms should have ample lighting to be able to read by. Task lighting is the term used for fixtures that provide focused lighting on a specific area where activities such as bill payment, reading, writing and working take place. Be sure to check the maximum wattage allowed for each fixture so as not to cause a fire hazard. If a fixture is strictly decorative, then a lower wattage will suffice. To illuminate a room for activities, choose a fixture with a minimum 60watt UL rating. Look for the ENERGY STAR label when choosing new lamps and fixtures. Make sure your choices include automated energy saving features where appropriate, such as occupancy sensors or timers. Select lamps that have a long life for maximum savings and minimal replacements.

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING NOT ONLY ENHANCES THE ARCHITECTURE OF YOUR HOME, IT SPOTLIGHTS THE BEAUTY OF YOUR LANDSCAPE DESIGN WHILE ADDING AN EXTRA ELEMENT OF SECURITY.

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER
Few things compare to relaxing outside on peaceful Autumn nights. Whether entertaining friends or unwinding at home, your house and garden should look their best, and with the right landscape lighting, the fun doesn’t have to stop at sunset. Lighting adds beauty to your garden and outdoor living areas by highlighting architectural surfaces, lining walkways and steps, delineating patio borders, highlighting features in flower and rock gardens and illuminating garden ponds, decks, swimming pools and statues. AUTOMATED LIGHTING CONTROL ADDS TO HOME SECURITY AND CONVENIENCE. Today’s lighting technology is designed to enhance the beauty, security, and convenience of every room in your home and lighting control offers you a new way to look at light. Dimmers, along with motorised shades and draperies, give you personalised control of your light from the first soft moments of the morning until the gradual fade-to-off as you drift to sleep. It also provides the ability to change the way a room or home looks and feels. Making your home more beautiful, more secure, more energy-efficient, and simpler to operate just by adding lighting control instead of a standard lighting installation. The use of LED lighting in place of conventional halogen light bulbs are coming more commonplace reducing the consumption of electricity even more. LED strips and colour changing lighting can highlight an area like the garden or emphasise a feature within the house setting the ideal mood, all of which can be controlled by the touch of a button or on a timed program. For lighting control to function at its best keypads, touchscreens and smart devices such as iPads & iPhones can be used in various areas in a property. Lighting sensors can override these in areas such as the dressing rooms, laundry and bathrooms if required.
SOME FEATURES AND BENEFITS TO LIGHTING CONTROL • The linking of lighting zones for fading and dimming down lights simply as well as change an areas appearance instantly with one touch presets. • Sensors can pick up movement and a light path activated for key areas of the property. Ideal when arriving home with shopping or getting up in the night. • Other features of lighting sensors is they only trigger lights to come on upon entering an area for a predetermined time period unless it is overridden. • An ‘Exit’ macro would turn off all lights in the house upon leaving (leaving outdoor and selected interior lights on if required) with the touch of one button. • In the event of a disturbance during the night an ‘All on’ button can be created to illuminate the whole house at the touch of a button to allow the homeowner to check on the property. • Movement sensors can be located on the stairs and walkways for automatic triggering of lighting in the ceiling and step details. Program your lights to turn off automatically when a room is unoccupied for a certain amount of time. • There is no need to have lights working at their full capacity as in standard switch installations. By reducing a bulb’s output by a fraction from its normal load, the bulbs lifespan doubles and electricity bills are greatly reduced. • Set your lights to a maximum level of 80%; your eyes won’t notice the difference but your utility bill will!

LED Lighting is Cool It is commonly known that the main important benefit of LED lighting is energy efficiency: LEDs create and consequently waste very little heat. Incandescent bulbs release 90 percent of their energy as heat and compact fluorescent bulbs are only slightly more efficient. LEDs (light-emitting diodes), on the other hand, produce light much more efficiently, using 75 percent less energy than incandescents. The most recent developments that have come in to LED lighting is the amazing amount of types of LED lamps and fittings now available on the market and the light outputs that are being tested are that much greater. In the LED world it is commonly known that to keep a consistent colour during production is difficult. This is the main complaint that you notice between a good LED from a cheap one. This in part is down to the high CRI (colour rendering index) which manufacturers use to gauge the consistency of all coloured light in the spectrum realistically or naturally. This then confirms the performance of the LED as a final product. The
higher the CRI generally means the LED is of a better quality and an important effect that should be considered at the design stage of a lighting system. LED lamps also achieve a very high score for environmental friendliness throughout the entire cycle of production, use, and disposal. LEDS AND HOW THEY WORK LEDs differ from traditional light sources in the way they produce light. In an incandescent lamp, a tungsten filament is heated by an electric current until it glows or emits light. In a fluorescent lamp, an electric arc excites mercury atoms, which emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An LED is a semiconductor diode. It consists of a chip of semiconducting material treated to create a structure called a p-n (positive-negative) junction. It has been recently determined that 195 billion Euros is spent globally each year on energy for home use. Energy efficiency improvements could cut this number by well over half. Installing LEDs with lighting control is one way of achieving these results.

COOL FACTS ABOUT LED LIGHTING • Energy savings: they use at least 75 percent less energy than incandescents. • Long life, low maintenance: LED lights last 35 to 50 times longer than incandescents and about 2 to 5 times longer than fluorescents. • Directional light emission: they can direct light where it is needed. (Incandescent and fluorescent bulbs emit light and heat in all directions, which is wasteful.) • Size advantage: LEDs can be very compact and low-profile. • Durable: unlike bulbs, they have no breakable glass or filaments. • “Instant on”: LEDs require no warm-up time. • Their small size and ability to direct light, in particular, make LEDs ideal for task lighting. • LED lights are now totally dimmable and come in many model types. • RGB LED lamps including LED strip are the colour version of the lights and are able to produce a vast range of colours as well as warm and cool whites — completely controllable.

MEDINA - The Medina collection represents the modern day transformation of tradition. Its classical essence is achieved thanks to its handcrafted production in the north of Pakistan using a very old and traditional technique; the kilim. Designer: Nani Marquina www.nanimarquina.com Choosing the right area rug for a room goes beyond simply selecting a rug that you like. Existing factors within the room will determine the rug you should select. A common mistake many people make is merely selecting the rug they like best, without taking into account how it will work in the room. Factors such as floor colour, furniture colour, wall colour, and the amount of natural light a room receives will dictate what type of rug you choose. The first and most important variable that needs to be considered is the colour of the larger elements in the room. These elements include wall colour, sofa colour, and drapery colour. You should select a rug that complements or enhances this existing palette.
In addition, the patterns of these elements will also play a role in selecting the appropriate rug. A general rule of thumb to follow is not to overdo it in selecting an identical pattern. However, you do want to select a pattern that coincides with the current theme of the room. Finally, floor colour should be taken into account as well. Lighter coloured floors look best with a rug of rich, deeper colours, and the contrast of a light area rug on a darker toned floor is striking. The amount of foot traffic a room receives, as well as the lifestyle of those using your room, should be considered when choosing the material of your rug. Wool rugs are not only the most popular, but also surprisingly resilient. Most stains and

dirt can be easily removed from a wool rug, in addition to the fact that wool provides good durability. Machine made rugs consisting of artificial fabrics are slightly easier to clean but don’t offer the same durability as wool rugs. Another important factor to consider is rug size. The existing furniture layout in the room will determine the size of the rug you select. your major pieces of furniture. For example, in a dining room the rug should cover at least the floor space under the dining room table. You should also leave at least 24 inches of visible fl oor space around the edges of the room. Lastly, natural light plays a signifi cant role in creating a feeling of space in a room. A lack of natural light can be made up for by decorating with lighter coloured furniture, walls, and of course area rugs. By following these simple rules and thoughtfully selecting an area rug, you will be well on your way to creating a pleasing look in any space you decorate. Supernova is PEPE PEÑALVER’s most contemporary collection. Inspired by the universe, geometry and the organic forms of the galaxies which merge to give shape to these fabrics. This collection presents heavy jacquards with geometric forms, viscose-pile velvets with abstract animal prints and silk jacquards evoking ancient latticework. All of these combine with washed upholstery cottons and flowing pleated fabrics. Supernova is brought to life through water greens, stone greys, warm tans and browns combined with tones of red and bordeaux, and alternated with aubergine, taupe, pure whites and ivories. The collection offers a modern, cosmopolitan, understated and urban style. www.pepepenalver.com
OUT OF AFRICA AND STORM COLLECTION A collection of sheers with a colour scheme which includes natural tones, linens and off whites, passing through stone and pearl greys, through to mauves and pale blues. Available in a range of translucencies in dusted hues. Its timeless style and simplicity makes it highly suitable for all environments and decor. www.pepepenalver.com
ALL IN THE DETAILS Curtains offer infinite creative possibilities. Fabrics can be mixed and matched to create a romantic, formal space (think delicate organza sheers behind rich brocade curtains that puddle on the floor), or evoke a warm, informal mood with a mix of tones and textures in a single colour. One idea is to pick up a soft hue in a brightly patterned drape and use it on other windows to create consistency between rooms. SHEER APPEAL Beautiful in the bedroom or living room, soft transparent sheers provide a romantic touch without the drama of heavier drapes. Generally made from polyester or feather-light silk organza, sheers offer privacy while still letting in plenty of natural light.
The latest looks feature delicate pastels, invigorating stripes and organic inspired prints. For the environmentally minded, Zepel’s FR-One sheers are fire-retardant and come with Oeko-Tex 100 certification, meaning they’re free from formaldehyde, pesticides and allergenic dyes. Look out, too, for Pepe Peñalver Storm Collection, sheers in natural and charcoal tones PRINTS CHARMING Modern yet intimate, the latest prints add warmth to curtains. UK designer Nina Campbell’s Delphine fabric is a favourite. Inspired by Monet’s famous garden in Giverny, Campbell’s fabric features largescale pale blue and olive maple leaves on textured woven linen. If you’re nervous about going all out with prints, a vertical panel of a bold fabric joined
with the main body of the curtain, an elaborate pattern on a large scale ends up looking quite formal and luxe. TREND ALERT At Heimtextil, Europe’s renowned international textiles trade fair, upcoming trends for next year are historian, eccentric, inventor and geologist. Historian is inspired by the late 16th and 17th centuries and its extreme richness of its historical arts and crafts. The historian palette is muted by the absence of bright light. Daylight shimmers through to reveal pearlescent pales, candlelit metallic sheen and dim and mysterious dark shades. Eccentric is daring and flamboyant and show folkloric aspects, exotic references and tribal influences. A palette of passion that stages the abundant HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

as well as the understated to enable flamboyant colour clashes where extravagance meets elegance and exoticism. The inventor trend, where function meets fun, wellness and entertainment, displays a playful range of vivid shades — strange contrasts, combining the clinical with the organic, the hot with the frozen and sparking understated functionality with a healthy dose of fun. The fourth trend, geologist, is inspired by the earth’s geological textures and reflects the mysterious, dark side of nature. Intense hues are sparked with poisonous brightness and metallic sheen. Irregular surface effects breathe life into dense and understated natural shades.
ORIGINS COLLECTION BY ALHAMBRA INTERNATIONAL Inspired from nature and the spirit of romanticism, origins is classic and warm through the use of linen, cotton and viscose velvet. There is also an exotic influence in the form of Oriental-inspired trims. Origins’ colour theme is composed of a wide variety of different tones, ranging from neutral shades to more intense ones such as olive green, burgundy, deep brown, earth tones and rosy pinks. www.alhambraint.com
NATURALLY YOURS Living green may just have you seeing green, too, if the latest curtain colours are anything to go by. Muted shades of citrus, beige and charcoal continue to grow in popularity, as do eco fabrics such as cotton, linen and hemp. Most natural fabrics are also hand or machine-washable, so are easier to clean than many synthetics, which should be professionally cleaned once a year. Many natural fibres, however, are still treated with pesticides. Look for organic cotton grown without chemicals and wool is also good as it’s naturally fire-retardant and a very good insulating material. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Bathrooms are a great place to be more adventurous with a bold blind, as they are often white or neutral and can easily carry a splash of colour SLIDE STAR Trying to cover extra-large windows, glass bi-folds or sliding doors? Sliding panel blinds are a smart option. Suspended from anodised aluminium tracks, these operate remotely or manually with a wand. A series of lightweight fabric panels gently glide across the window until they slightly overlap – putting an end to the light gaps often associated with roller and Roman blinds. Choose transparent fabrics to retain light and views, or heavier blockout fabrics for total privacy. MOTOR RUNNING With no visible chains or tassels, motorised curtains and blinds are a great option for families, removing the issue of pets and children tangling (and getting tangled in) the cords. They’re also just the ticket for large windows or those out of reach. They are operated by remote control or a domotics system and have a timer option for when you’re not at home.
STRAIGHT SHOOTER With their architectural elegance, light-blocking abilities and warm, natural character, timber venetians are a perfect fit for modern, eco-conscious spaces. Some schools of thought say timber is the ultimate eco material, although there are a lot of problems around where the timber comes from – look for styles using sustainably sourced timbers. Plantation timbers such as western red cedar are a safe bet. It’s the king of timbers as far as venetians are concerned. Western red cedar is the bestlooking, is extremely durable and long-lasting, can be stained, painted or lacquered, and the timber is renewable and sustainable. Basswood is another readily available plantation timber, or try Ikea’s renewable hardwood ‘Lindmon’ venetians in brown or white stains, or with a clear finish. TROPICAL COOL Plantation shutters made of timber, aluminium or vinyl, are fixed to the window frame and operated with a tilt rod. Their smooth, wide slats evoke the feel of a lush, tropical retreat. Able to withstand heat and steam, plantation shutters, painted to match the window architraves, are very effective in a bathroom setting. Also shuteers made with strong, easy-to-clean Polyresin 3, won’t crack, warp or discolour, and help reduce the amount of heat entering the home. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Villa Morera,

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER
SOTOGRANDE-BASED ARCHITECT FIRM ARK ARKITECTS HAVE GAINED A FANTASTIC REPUTATION FOR FUSING MODERN AND CLASSIC ARCHITECTURE WITH BREATHTAKING RESULTS. THEIR LATEST CREATION, “VILLA MORERA” IN THE PRESTIGIOUS LA RESERVA DE SOTOGRANDE, IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF HOW THEY HAVE EARNED THIS RECOGNITION.
One of ARK’s main aims is to build harmoniously with the natural environment. Consequently, Villa Morera, a stunning display of modern and avant-garde design, sits on top of one of Sotogrande’s most exclusive areas and follows the landscape’s natural contours. This unique and intimate villa is elegant and serene, built on a 2,970 square-metre plot; it boasts two swimming pools and is surrounded by exquisitely manicured gardens. Even the foliage is striking with lemonade berry and cypress trees already planted so that the property is in full bloom from day one. The team behind the Villa Morera build relentlessly pursue perfection, and this is evident in every detail, from the architecture, landscaping to the interior design. The project is probably one of ARK’s most original, with more than 1,000 square-metres of contemporary features using nothing but the best in materials and craftsmanship. The glass walls and the impressive array of materials include marble flooring, Iroko wood, Arabic tiling, stucco and natural stone.
The interior is simply beautiful with crisp lines and bright open spaces with no visual barriers, giving the impression that the house is perched literally on the water’s edge, even though the sea is around four kilometres away. A comfortable and spacious openplan living room and dining room leads to a covered terrace, where the interior and exterior become one. The floor-to-ceiling glass allows light and colour to flood the villa as well as maximising the views of the garden and Mediterranean sea. For the cook of the home, there is an open-plan gourmet kitchen with the finest appliances and the ultimate in domotics. On the lower floor there is a wine cellar, home cinema room and spa with a hydro-massage indoor swimming pool, Turkish bath and sauna which merges with the outdoor relaxation area and heated infinity pool. On the top floor there is an office along with three of the five bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, private terraces and views to soak up the surroundings. The exquisite master bedroom and en-

suite boasts polished marble counters, a hydro-massage bathtub and an enormous dressing room. Stunning it may be, but the company knows that true luxury is not about being “flash”, it’s about warmth and harmony. Part of that comes from the privacy and peace that the villa brings, and the comforting amenities such as heated floors, air-conditioning and doubleglazing. But to the impassioned team at ARK, it comes down to the creation of harmony, where architecture, landscape, exterior and interior design merge into one to create a perfect oasis. All of this beauty and perfection is built around one truism: that nothing can compete with the natural beauty surrounding this property which is why the designers made sure that the villa faces the sunrise with spectacular views in every room of the sweeping Mediterranean, and perhaps even better, there is enough space to enjoy it.

natural additives to replace natural flavours, colours and texture. Although we included chapters on the mini growing of vegetables in just 1-10 square metres of space in our books, Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain and Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style, Dick continues to experiment. The photograph above shows part of our latest productive six square metre vegetable garden. The table is surrounded by crops growing in 10cm diameter plastic builder buckets. Except for the tomato and courgette buckets, the others are shaded for most of the day by a large garden umbrella as many salad vegetables and herbs dislike the hot sun of the summer. Few gardens could not fit this in and it is not labour intensive. By the way, most of what we grow are grown for their vitamin, mineral and fibre content. If these can be grown in the garden why purchase vitamin and mineral supplements? Naturally, many fruits and nuts have significant vitamin, mineral and health content, and many can be eaten 100% fresh from the trees and bushes while wandering around the garden. Recently we could not resist a few grapes, raspberries, blackberries and the first kiwinos before dinner – who said you can’t have dessert first! Unsprayed or at most sprayed only with neem and propolis oils there is no fear of surface or absorbed residual chemicals. By the time you read this article the almonds will also have been harvested and those inland may well be roasting chestnuts and cracking walnuts in October. Moving on to flowers, do ensure you have good autumn displays for the garden which tend to be used more in the last days of summer and autumn than in mid-summer. We enjoy an autumn display of sages. The only problem is that they are among our few thirsty
plants and some need nursing through the summer, especially this year with no rain from before Easter to mid-August at the time of writing. But as illustrated they are worth it. Naturally long established and no longer thirsty plants such as lantanas, bignonia, hibiscus with their edible flowers, bougainvilleas mirabilis and tulbagia will also be flowering well. Other useful autumn flowering plants will be found in the plant lists and descriptions, with botanical Spanish and English names for each, in Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting and maintenance. So one way or another do enjoy a good life within and from your garden. Maybe we will meet up in the Autumn to exchange ideas and experiences. COME AND MEET DICK AND CLODAGH From time-to-time we receive questions from readers to gardeninginspain@hotmail.com. We respond to these individually and where the topics of the questions and answers have wider interest we will integrate the topic in to articles published in Home and Lifestyle magazine. A few times over the years we have aslo agreed to be at shows to man a gardening question and answer stand, and it has been great to meet and help readers face-to-face. There will be another opportunity for this on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th of November when we will be at the Homes, Gardens and Outdoor Living Show at the Estepona Exhibition Centre. Hope to chat to some of you there.

There are three types of expat gardener. Those that pay someone to design and maintain their garden, taking little interest in these activities except to say “How do you like my garden” from a panoramic window or raised up terrace. Those that spend time deciding on what they want from and in their garden, and employ someone to implement their ideas under their close supervision. They tend to ask you to walk the garden with a “Come and see what we have done”. Thirdly, those that design, develop and maintain a garden themselves, ensuring that the garden incorporates the growing of healthy ecologically fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs, and tend to ask you “Let’s walk the garden and chat in our special hidden spot then we can collect some goodies for lunch”. Whichever your approach, the best gardens are not necessarily those with the greatest collection of plants, the largest pool, the largest lawn or cladding terrace, but those that enable the owner to make the best of their lives in Spain. This includes keeping their ageing minds active in thinking about the garden creatively, having realistic exercise from garden development and maintenance activities plus exercise in the swimming pool, tennis, badminton court or gym, a balance of sun and shade, strategically located seating and eating areas for different times of the year, perfumed plants to balance the increasing pollution along the Costas, thick hedges for privacy and reducing pollution, plus home grown edibles for healthy gastronomic eating. Having just enjoyed a genuine gastronomic dish of home reared rabbit stewed with home grown vegetables and herbs, it reminded us of how often these days so called gastronomic menus are an expensive series of pre-cooked dishes heated up in a micro-oven and possibly contains a number of un-

He has earned himself an impressive loyal fan-base of diners who regularly visit Nueva Kaskada,
but he is always excited to welcome new diners to taste his creations. He is quirky, passionate, and unlike many chefs, totally unassuming but at the same time charming. He changes his menu seasonally according to what produce is available at the time from the markets that he regularly loves to visit. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was lucky enough to be invited to sample some of Ewald’s many delights, one of them being his signature dish entitled “Yang” consisting of a crispy Asian-style spring chicken (or poulard) served with Singapore noodles combining crunchy and soft textures with salty and sweet flavours. We were also treated to a clever twist on the traditional Beef Wellington. Instead of the beef fillet being wrapped inside puff pastry, the ingredients were arranged in a tower with the pastry delicately placed on the top of a layer of melt-in-the-mouth foie gras, a succulent beef fillet and a delicate potato purée base surrounded by crunchy vegetables and a port wine jus. Amongst many, a dish that put a smile on our faces was the fillet of turbot Mona Lisa (please excuse the pun). Ewald profoundly commented, “I called it the Mona Lisa because the arrangement of the dish reminded me of the painting. If you love something, you give it a name, so that’s why I like to give my dishes names – they are a creation and I want to give them a personality of their own.” Nueva Kaskada is ideal for parties, weddings or a romantic meal. Open every day for dinner except for Tuesdays and open for lunch on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For reservations, call 952 864 478 or 669 230 699. toothed, you cannot miss out on the “White Passion” which is passion fruit encased in white chocolate, fusing sweet and tangy in every satisfying spoonful. In the restaurant itself, you will be met by Alberto Jimenez - young but highly-experienced in his field having worked in a number of prestigious restaurants across the Costa del Sol. A wine connoisseur, he has selected a wine and champagne list that is varied and discerning. The eighty wines on offer mainly come from France, Spain, California and Australia with big names such as Pingus 2004, Armand de Brignac Rosé and Moët & Chandon Jeroboam gracing the list as well as some exciting cocktails. It might sound like Sala Mirador will be a bank breaker, but in reality their prices are very reasonable. Apart from the dinner menu, they offer breakfast, snacks and a Menu del Día at lunchtime as an alternative option to the A La Carte menu. Sala Mirador is open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner with DJs on Fridays and Saturdays. They will be holding a Halloween party so for more details on that, go to their Facebook page. Sala Mirador is ideal for parties, weddings and conferences with a private dining area on offer. SALA MIRADOR, SITUATED IN
The view is the star of this chill-out venue, so Sala Mirador or in English “Viewing Lounge” is decked out with four-poster beds and comfortable sofas to fully appreciate the panoramic vistas set in front of you. Inside, the restaurant has high ceilings giving an airy feel about the place with stylish modern decor and floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering uninterrupted view across the coast even when you sit inside. Recently reopened, this idyllic venue gives a fantastic feeling of peace and tranquillity. It is part of the Cerrado de Aguilas resort which has a number of tennis and paddle courts, a gym and a golf course to boot. Juan Barriga, with his 25 years of experience, was overjoyed to take on the role of Head Chef this summer commenting, “I worked here a couple of years ago and have always loved this place – so it was my pleasure to come back as it’s a very special venue.” Juan is a very friendly and highly-dedicated Malagueño whose style is primarily French which is evident through his immaculate presentation and accomplished sauces, but you can also see that his inspirations have also come from all over Spain. When he put the menu together at Sala Mirador, he ensured that it was varied and appealing to all, whether you are a meat lover, fish lover or vegetarian alike – there is something for everyone. The terrine of homemade foie gras with Pedro Ximenez reduction and rose preserve is a popular starter. For the meat lovers, there’s rack of lamb, suckling pig and entrecote to tantalise the taste buds, and for the fish lovers, tuna steak, lobster and scallops amongst much more. For the sweetDAVID TOMS

Taking prime position at the heart of Ocean Village marina, rubbing shoulders with yachts at anchor, Dusk officially pop its first champagne corks at the Black & White Grand Opening Party on Friday 31 August. “Gibraltar has plenty of late and lively nightspots for the young, but those in their 30s with more refined tastes have, until now, struggled to find a venue that understands their idea of fun,” says Nicola Copeland, Dusk’s General Manager. “For after dinner drinks, dancing and mingling, Dusk will become the go-to late-night venue and we’ve got a door policy of over 30 for women and over 35 for men to create the perfect atmosphere for our target audience. Open from 10pm ‘til late, as late as 8am, on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, no other venue in Gibraltar can come close — and that’s how we want it to stay.” Dusk offers over 50 kinds of champagne from a magnum of Dom Perignon to a salmanazar (that’s nine litres) of Mumm, alongside a lovingly fashioned cocktail list created by Tom, the head cocktail maker. His mixes are already getting rave reviews from training nights and Tom says the emphasis is on quality, a memorable drink in a decadent setting of refinement and class – fitting for a marina resort known for its megayachts and prestigious homes. Attired in chic black and white, the staff are attuned to the needs of a discerning clientele and everyone will be made to feel like a VIP – regardless of the occasion. As a nod to North Africa, which lies visibly just 14km across the Strait, Dusk has an exotic and sensual flavour on its waterfront terrace. Oversized day beds for night lounging are accessorized with cushions in opulent fabrics, geometric iron lanterns, rich round ottomans, Persian-style carpets and lush planting – a touch of the Bedouin in Gibraltar. Inside the intricate mosaic tiled bar leads to the dance floor with glass cut-outs lighting up the marine life swimming beneath the marina. The décor is beyond compare. This dish can be served for breakfast or a light lunch. Moroccan egg for breakfast I hear you say? But fear not, this dish is hugely popular in Andalucia and Morocco as a breakfast dish and there are variations of it served in Italy. I am a huge fan of savoury and often spicy food especially for breakfast; I feel that having a really good meal in the morning is best when we are trying to beat hunger before lunchtime. 300g Ripe tomatoes, peeled, quartered & deseeded 1.5 tablespoons rapeseed oil 3 Spring Onions, trimmed and roughly sliced 2 Garlic Cloves, sliced thinly 1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seeds, roughly ground Pinch Cayenne Pepper or Chilli Flakes 2 medium organic eggs Handful roughly chopped coriander or flat parsley Himalayan Salt & Black Pepper Heat a medium-sized pan over a medium heat, when hot, add the oil and fry the spring onion, garlic and cumin until they start to colour. Add the tomatoes, cayenne and salt and pepper. Simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the tomatoes start to breakdown crack the eggs into the pan (one either side) use a fork to encourage the whites to settle over the tomato mixture and simmer until the eggs are how you like them (i.e. runny or not!). Sprinkle with the chopped herbs and serve.

Hotel Du Ministere LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE 8TH ARRONDISSEMENT, MOMENTS AWAY FROM THE MADELEINE AND THE FAUBOURG SAINT HONORÉ. 100
SEPTEMBER OCTOBER
The interior harmoniously combines the classic with the contemporary — warm tones are punctuated by accents of colour. Retro touches from the fifties are mixed with modern design creating a contemporary yet eminently stylish hotel experience. The hotel has been redesigned entirely by interior designer and creator extraordinaire François Champsaur. He has created a unique space that feels like a contemporary house — a home away from home where the living spaces are open plan and there is a feeling of light and harmony throughout the hotel. The choice of design materials has been made in order to create a perfect balance between the simple and the elaborate — marble juxtaposed with wood, natural tones mixed with vibrant splashes of colour. Gorgeous warm toned carpets with geometric prints
create an inviting feel to the rooms and suites throughout the hotel. Exquisite art and imposing scupltures adorn the hotel lobby. Coloured lithographs by David Lynch, Barthélémy Toguo and Raymond Pettibon sit alongside scultpures by Sébastien Kito. A feast for the eyes and a rare privilege to see such an impressive contemporary art collection adorning the walls of a hotel. An intimate “at home” atmosphere is created and hotel guests can enjoy a personal and intimate experience rather than a mass market corporate one. The lobby, rooms, suites and communal areas of the hotel are all designed with utmost care and harmony. The wine bar, decorated in elegant marble invites guests to sample the carefully chosen “natural” wine list and selection
of regional specialties — ideal for pre-dinner light meals. On the ground floor of the hotel, the various different sitting rooms radiate a soothing atmosphere with delicate, unique interior design touches such as the winter garden area with a clear glass roof which bathes the room in soft natural light. The meeting rooms of the hotel “L’Atrium” and “Le Cellier” provide a serene yet aesthetically pleasing working environment. Both rooms are fully equippped and enable guests to work efficiently in stylish surroundings. The hotel fitness room allows guests to exercise as well as relax. The 24 rooms within the hotel offer a modern yet cosy space opening onto exquisite bathrooms decorated in a cabana style in light wood tones. Each room is unique and each possesses a different layout. All are equipped
with the highest quality bed linen, mattresses and duvets to ensure a perfect night of sleep. The Superior rooms are characterised by luxurious wooden headboards enveloping the bed in an alcove style. The Deluxe rooms are even more spacious with double marble sinks in the bathrooms. The Junior suites of the hotel are located in an exclusive second wing adjacent to the main hotel and are designed to feel like a private apartment with a very large room and bathroom. All decorated in fresh colours, the suites are exquisite and designed with unique artistic flair. The Hôtel du Ministère is an intimate yet contemporary haven in the heart of Paris in which art, design and colour are combined to create a unique and unforgettable hotel experience. www.ministerehotel.com 31, Rue de Surène 75008 Paris HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse THE WORLD’S FASTEST CONVERTIBLE.
106
SEPTEMBER OCTOBER
DYNAMICS IN FIGURES. The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse boasts a remarkable maximum torque of 1,500 Nm (at 3000–5000 rpm) from the 7.9-liter capacity of its W16 engine. The maximum output (1,200 hp) is reached at 6,400 rpm. These figures allow the car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standing in unbelievable 2.6 seconds. The top speed of 410 km/h (255 mph) makes the four-wheel drive Vitesse (like all Veyrons) the fastest production roadster ever. The maximum speed is reached on closed tracks with special safety precautions. In “normal” handling mode, the Vitesse is electronically limited to 375 km/h (233 mph). OPTIMIZED DRIVE SYSTEM. The 199 hp increase over the Grand Sport has been mainly achieved by using four larger turbochargers with new intercoolers. Furthermore, Bugatti has extensively reinforced all drivetrain components in order to safely transfer the immense forces at all times. The gearing of the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) in particular has been adapted to the new requirements. In this context, as on the Super Sport, Bugatti has also modified the air ducting in the area of the drivetrain. As a consequence of the larger turbochargers and the overall reduced back pressure, it was even possible to reduce the fuel consumption slightly despite the increased output. The fuel system, with a four-pump tank, has been taken from the Super Sport. CHASSIS. In order to put the unrivalled power onto the road absolutely safely and masterfully, the engineers have reconfigured the chassis of the Vitesse. Thanks to the quickresponding dampers that have been adapted from motor racing, the control of the vehicle has been further improved and perfectly balanced. Body roll and pitching during hard acceleration and braking are now virtually imperceptible. Optimized wheel-load fluctuations have further reduced understeer and allow a maximum level of active safety. In addition to the incomparable lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 g, the precise interaction of the tires (on all-new, lighter 20-inch “Vitesse”-type alloy wheels), together with the intelligent all-wheel-drive system, ensures extremely good handling. The chassis, all-wheel-drive system and the revised ESP form a dynamic alliance: since the reconfigured ESP kicks in slightly later, for example when you accelerate out of corners, the Vitesse also provides a more dynamic performance in these situations. It goes without saying that Bugatti has adapted the brake-cooling system to account for the even higher engine output. The brakes, which are unparalleled in terms of stability and performance, now have additional and larger air intakes. In general, it can be said that the Vitesse is even sportier than the 1,001 hp Grand Sport, but at the same time it has not been turned into a full-blown racing car. It therefore remains easy to master for the driver. In this context, it is simply astounding that Bugatti managed to increase comfort in the chassis area by reducing the dynamic natural frequency. BODY. Bugatti has developed a new roof spoiler for the Vitesse that significantly reduces wind noise and buffeting in the interior. Furthermore, there will be a new windbreak for HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

the roadster that can be stored away compactly in the luggage compartment when not in use. Both details will also be available for the Grand Sport. Together, they allow extremely relaxed, open-top driving even at speeds of around 200 km/h (124 mph). Numerous aerodynamic measures at the front and rear that appeared on the Super Sport have been adapted for the Vitesse. The front end is therefore characterized by larger air intakes; the two central air intakes to the left and right of the Bugatti radiator grille are divided horizontally by a bar. The bottom air vent stretches sideways into the wheel housing and gives this exceptional sports car an extremely masterful appearance. Immediately below this air intake, you will see a new, visually refined front spoiler that has been designed in a similar way to the splitters used in motor racing. The improved xenon headlights from the Super Sport, which are now framed in black, are also new. The rear end, which is also derived from the Super Sport, is characterized by a double diffusor and a centrally positioned twin tailpipe. A new Park Distance Control system (PDC) watches over the front and the rear. The two air scoops on the left and right of the engine cover (redesigned for the Vitesse) are a characteristic of the Grand Sport and thus also of the Vitesse. These air scoops fulfill two tasks on the roadster. On the one hand, they pull in air for the engine, and on the other, they are an elegantly integrated part of the anti-roll protection system. As on the Super Sport, a full- carbon-fiber monocoque, which allows an extremely high torsional rigidity combined with maximum passive safety, is also used on the Vitesse. The outer skin is also made completely from carbon fiber and, consequently, the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is available in clear-coated exposed carbon fiber.
INTERIOR. Carbon fiber is (along with stainless metals such as aluminum and magnesium) also the dominant material in the interior of the Vitesse. Numerous interior parts are now made from carbon fiber in the 1,200 hp roadster. This includes the center console extension, a cover with EB logo in the rear-bulkhead leather trim (between the seat backrests) and the belt outlet covers on the seats. The décor on the center console, the door inserts and the adjoining trim on the instrument panel are also made from carbon fiber. Contrasting stitching is also featured on the leather armrest between the seats, which comes without the typical quilting. Also new: knee pads in the center tunnel area, an additional 12 V socket (in the glove compartment), the restraint systems, the illuminated start and parking lock button (same as Super Sport), an instrument cluster with shift-up information and – as a matter of honor – the power gauge that now goes up to 1,200 hp. Following the success of the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Bugatti did not have to wait long before it received the first inquiries about an open-top version of the Grand Sport that could also deliver 882 kW (1,200 hp). CONFIGURATION OF THE SHOW VEHICLE. There is no end to the individualization options for the Bugatti. Each one of the more than 300 Veyrons built is therefore unique. This also applies to the special edition Vitesse model Bugatti is exhibiting at The Quail. This version of the new roadster orientates itself at a Type 37A, which was built in 1928, won a multitude of Grand Prix races in its time and is now owned by the famous TV presenter Jay Leno. www.bugatti.com

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SPECTRUM FM >
UB40 A Life in Music 110
SEPTEMBER OCTOBER
MARK GOODIER INTERVIEWS ROBIN CAMPBELL, ASTRO AND DUNCAN CAMPBELL FROM UB40
MG: Formed as teenagers in the summer of 1978 in Birmingham, they have released more than 20 original albums and several Labour of Love covers albums which featured classic love and reggae songs. Over the years they’ve seen over 50 singles in the UK charts and in charts all over the world and enjoyed record sales of over 70 million making one of the world’s best selling music acts. In 2008, lead singer Ali Campbell left the band along with keyboardist, Mickey Virtue. Ali’s replacement was his brother, Duncan, also brother of guitarist and backing singer, Robin Campbell. Robin’s arrival coincided with the recording of their 2010 album, Labour of Love IV. RC: Every seven or eight years in our careers, we’ve done a labour of love... Obviously Duncan knows the tunes well... so it’s not like he had to learn new material, so it was actually very easy for us to do. MG: UB40 are unusual with their dual career as they not only write their own music, but are also a covers band with their Labour of Love series. But back in 1983, it was not an idea that their record company was particularly keen on. RC: We always intended it to have its own life because it was kind of a separate project. The labels we were with at the time said it was “lunacy” and “commercial suicide”, “you can’t do it – you’re a political band” and that we would be “laughed out of town”. It was something we always wanted to do, and when we did it, it was so successful that the record companies immediately asked, “When do we get the next one?” but we have left it a respectable 7 or 8 years between each one. MG: Trombonist and percussionist, Astro was certain that Labour of Love would be a big success. ASTRO: When we first talked about doing a Labour of Love album, it was just dismissed as lunacy but we truly believe in it in our heart of hearts as these were the songs we grew up listening to...” RC: ...And they were all hits in the reggae world – they were all number one records. ASTRO: We just believe that if they were exposed to the general public, the world would fall in love with them like we did. RC: In America we had at least 4 top ten records
off Labour of Love 2, I think 5 in England... I don’t think you could possibly know beforehand how successful they were going to be. We got our first number one with “Red, Red Wine” – that kind of vindicated everything - but you couldn’t possibly know the success that was going to come over the next 25 years.
a cover band at all but obviously the success of the Labour of Love series has kind of branded us as this just because they were so commercial. We’ve also had a couple of dozen of other tunes that we wrote that have been top 40 hits. I suppose because all of our number ones have been covers, so you get tarred with that brush.
MG: Please Don’t Cry appeared on the very first Labour of Love album and got to number 10 on the UK singles chart in 1983. Labour of Love One was a massive success and was also responsible for UB40’s number one single, Red Red Wine. RC: It went to number one in 25 countries so it was obviously a massive record for us and it was also a hit in America 5 years after it was a hit everywhere else. It got into the lower 40s the first time it was released in America in 1983, and then five years later, a DJ in Pheonix Arizona didn’t like the track he was supposed to be playing and randomly chose this song from some obscure reggae band from Birmingham and he got a fantastic response off it so he added it to his playlist and then became “heavy rotation” and then another radio station added it and it kind of blew up from there. Our American label rang us and asked us if we could re-release “Red Red Wine”, and we were quite bemused by it all really as it was a five year old record for us, so we had this very strange thing where we were touring in 1988 in America with a number one record that wasn’t on our current album!
MG: UB40’s biggest single worldwide is another song from the Labour of Love series, their 1993 cover, “I Just Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” originally made famous by Elvis Presley. Robin puts its success down to chance. RC: It’s more luck than judgement really. We were asked to do it for the Honeymoon in Vegas. They asked us to do an Elvis tune so we did that. When we gave it to them, they turned it down and went with Bono’s version.... So that sat on the shelf for about a year and then someone from the record company in America got it for Sliver and the producers for that film loved the tune, and low and behold, as I say with more than luck than judgement, otherwise that might have sat there forever, never seeing the light of day. I think it went to number one in 30 countries or something! New lead singer, Duncan recalls how he and his brothers, Robin and Ali had grown up being surrounded by music. DC: My dad was at the front of Britain’s probably most successful folk band and ran a folk club in Birmingham more importantly, for a long long time. RC: We were surrounded by music and musicians from when we were toddlers. We had many musicians stay at our house – they used to play at the club and he used to put them up. Billy Connelly, The Dubliners, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and all the big names of folk played at the club really. You just get to a point where you start looking for something different. Like all kids, they want to listen to the opposite of what their parents are into. When I was 12 or 13, reggae happened and that kind of changed my life and my approach to music completely changed.
MG: At the time of recording “Red Red Wine”, the band didn’t know that they were covering a Neil Diamond song, the only version of the song they knew was by Jamaican Rock Steady artist, Tony Tribe. ASTRO: The only time we knew about Neil Diamond was after we had already recorded it just for publishing purposes as we had to find out who the authors were. MG: Despite the success of the Labour of Love albums, Robin is keen to point out that UB40 is more than a just covers band. RC: It was a completely separate side project – we’ve done 21 I think other original albums of original material so we don’t think of ourselves as
MG: UB40 have often been asked why, coming from Birmingham, they play reggae. But for Robin and the rest of the band, it didn’t seem that unusual at all. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW FROM SPECTRUM FM >
RC: We were a bit evangelical about it...we were taking reggae to the masses. It was there, we were surrounded by it on the streets and we came from an immigrant area so we heard Jamaican pop music before it was reggae when it was Ska and Boogie Woogie. Reggae, for us, was the music we heard on a daily basis. It wasn’t until we started travelling around the UK that we saw people surprised that we played reggae. It was the whole reason for Labour of Love really... to show people really where we came from and why we were into reggae and the reggae that was prior to the Marley explosion and the politicising of reggae when it was just Jamaican pop music. Of course there were political songs and there were political artists but on the whole, most of them were love songs like other pop music and it was a kind of innocent period when the vocal trios like The Pioneers, The Paragons and The Melodians. That for me was my favourite period of reggae when everything happened. Since then, everything that has come since has really been a reworking of that period – the whole Studio One scene. All the records you hear now like Sean Paul etc are all backing tracks from those periods – they are all Studio One, Treasure Isle and Beverlies – stuff we grew up on. MG: Although UB40 as a band are family and childhood friends who grew up together, they might never have formed as a band, it may never have formed as a band if it hadn’t been for an incident that occurred when Ali Campbell was out celebrating his 17th birthday. RC: He was attacked in a bar and got criminal injuries compensation of a few thousand pounds which in 1978 was a lot of money so he actually bought a guitar and a drum kit and said, “That’s it, we’re starting a band!”. I think Ali originally wanted to be the drummer, and of course we talked him out of that because he’s a singer(!), so he ended up playing rhythm guitar, but it was the springboard or the catalyst for us forming the band really. MG: The band started to get more and more gigs but their lucky break came when Chrissie Hynde, lead

singer of The Pretenders, saw them playing in a pub one night. RC: It was our first mini tour of London – I think it was The Hope and Anchor where Chrissie came and saw us. There was a bit of a buzz about us so we got our first little tour in London and she turned up. We didn’t know she was there but she came and saw us afterwards backstage and invited us on her tour which was a sell-out tour already. She had a number one album, Brass In Pocket. So that kind of introduced us to an audience that we hadn’t seen previously – it was her audience obviously – and we got such a great reception that we released our first single while we were on the tour. When we came off the tour it was number four in the charts. MG: Supporting The Pretenders on tour proved to be invaluable when it came to the release of their first singles, “King” and “Food For Thought”. RC: It was a double A side that we released whilst we were on The Pretenders tour... We actually thought that “King” was going to be the commercial track – the one that everybody liked but it in fact it was “Food For Thought” that was the big success. MG: Not only was Chrissie Hynde elemental in getting exposure for UB40 in the early days, she also contributed to their growing stack of hit records by collaborating in songs such as “I got you babe” which got the band their second number one single. RC: I think she suggested it when we were on that tour. She said to Ali, “With your voice and my looks, we couldn’t fail” MG: From 1988, UB40 and Chrissie Hynde had “Breakfast In Bed”. As well as considerable success in Europe and America, UB40 also have a large following in Africa – it was a gig on the continent playing one of their earlier songs, “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today” when the experience on the most unlikely coincidences. ASTRO: We were doing a gig in Zimbabwe and they’d
had a drought for about seven years. So come the day of the gig, there about four other African bands before us - it was a beautiful day...baking hot... we’ve come on stage and sung two numbers and then Robin’s gone to the stage and said, “This next number is by a guy called Randy Newman and it’s called “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today”. We started the number and by the time we’d got to the first chorus, the sky had turned black and it’s throwing down so much rain, it bent all the scaffolding that was holding up the tarpaulin, 5 million gallons of water dumped on the stage, so we’ve had to stop, and then about a minute and a half later, the clouds have all disappeared and we’re back to blue skies. The gig was over as the monitor desks were under water as were the keyboards. The crowd were going bananas throwing bottles and bricks at the stage! MG: Among other things, UB40 have earned themselves a reputation of being a political band, indeed their name came from the UK unemployment benefit form required by the Department for Health and Social Security in order to sign on at the time of the bands forming. Right from the start they had a point to make, and as Astro confirms, it hasn’t changed with the many years of their career. One of their more political songs and one of their biggest hits, was the 1987 song, “Rat In The Kitchen” which came about thanks to Astro’s experience. ASTRO: I was looking for a subject matter to write about and I passed by Ali’s house and he said, “Forget about all of that, have you seen the rat I’ve got in my kitchen?”, so I had the title for the song, and as far as I’m concerned, the world is the kitchen where all good things are supposed to be and dirty vermin is the last thing you want in there, and at the time Margaret Thatcher was leading the country and she was the “rat” in our kitchen. The rest is history as they say! MG: Unless you listened closely, you may not have realised what the song was about.
RC: It was disguised in a nursery rhyme-type fashion which is something we have tried to do many a time because that’s what will get it played on the radio without anybody actually realising... The clenched fist in a velvet glove. MG: Three years after a “Rat In The Kitchen” in 1990, UB40 released Kingston Town which featured on their second Labour of Love album. RC: It’s another part of our musical heritage, a song about Kingston Town, the capital of Jamaica, written by a guy called Kindrick Patrick or Lord Creator, his stage name. That was a number one in the reggae charts and everywhere you went for the summer in 1969, all you heard everywhere was Kingston Town – it was just a tune that was part of our childhood and a tune I love... The whole reason for doing those songs in the first place was about recognition for those songs as they were the songs that made us want to be UB40 and play reggae and they were kind of unknown outside of reggae circles so it was really nice to be able to give them an airing and to take them to an audience that otherwise would never have heard them. The whole purpose of doing Labour of Love in the first place was to show people where we were coming from and why we loved these tunes and why they were so special to us. MG: Another track from the same album is the Al Green cover, “Here I Am, Come And Take Me” which shows another side of reggae. RC: Ever since Jamaicans have been making their own music, they’ve been covering American RnB because it is just across the water. So for us to be covering those tunes, they’re RnB tunes originally, but they’re still tunes that were covered in Jamaica. MG: One of the biggest events in the band’s history occurred in 2008, when family member and lead singer, Ali Campbell decided to leave the band. The most natural replacement was his brother, Duncan.
DC: I’ve been around all the time. I’ve only been in the band the last couple of years but I’ve always been here and come from the same place. I went to school with half the band and I’ve almost been a member since the beginning – just wasn’t actually on stage! MG: It has been quite a task for Duncan to learn the band’s massive catalogue of songs in particular, the lyrics. DC: I thought I knew them, especially the Labour of Love stuff... but I found the opposite was true. MG: There was also the issue of trying to sing all the old hits in the way the fans will recognise. DC: The job I had initially was to try to replace Ali but not mimic him exactly although, because we are brothers – there are only 10 months between us – it’s not that difficult to sound similar but it’s about keeping the UB40 sound. Now that we are doing this new UB40 album, I’m not limited in any way to repeat what was done before. This is still the UB40 sound but I don’t have to think about each line quite as detailed as I do with the old stuff. MG: Duncan’s position in the band was remarkably well-received by the fans. RC: He has had nothing but encouragement. There’s always banners in the crowd saying, “Go Duncan!” DC: I think because I am a brother and almost an honoury member of the band – I was up with them at the Nelson Mandela Concert – I have been a backstage member of the band since the year dot, so I think that’s what’s made it perhaps a little easier for me as it would have been for somebody else. MG: Duncan was happy to be able to put his sound on the band’s 2010 album, Labour of Love IV. DC: I’m a mad Sam Cook fan, so Bring It On Home To Me was an obvious choice for me. Singing a Sam Cook number is like singing a Frank Sinatra number, but what can you do? You can only do your best.”
RC: You can’t possibly hope to improve on what they did, all you can do is do it the best you can, they way you want to, you know, the way you feel, and that’s all we’ve ever tried to do. You wouldn’t possibly claim that it was better singing than Sam Cook’s, that would be ludicrous. It’s just a different take on a great tune and it’s of course, a reggae version which Sam Cook didn’t do, so that’s what makes it different. MG: “Bring It On Home To Me” was recorded in a way that UB40 returned to around the time of Duncan joining the band. RC: We got back into the studio and played as a band. We set up in one big room and the original takes for every track have been as a band playing and we kind of rediscovered ourselves doing that because we had sort of forgotten what it was like to be a band. ASTRO: We had allowed computers and technology to take us over. Instead of us using technology, technology was using us. We kind of lost our way really. RC: We were working in shifts. There were never more than two members of the band in at any one time – it just got a bit stale really. ASTRO: When we actually played those tunes live, they’re twenty times better than the actual recording because we are actually playing as a band instead of doing shift work. RC: We thought why aren’t we recording like that? So finally with “Who You Fighting For?” we just got back into the studio and did it as a band again and the difference was palpable. You could immediately tell that we were a band enjoying themselves again.” MG: After more than 30 years as a band, and more than 20 original albums under their belt, UB40 are still passionate about the music they’ve recorded. With an extravaganza of Fashionvilla Marbella swimwear, cocktail dresses and evening glamour sashaying down the catwalk, the stylish multibrand boutique’s vibrant show ended with a stylish wedding vignette leaving onlookers on a romantic high as Fashionvilla’s Julia Rep took to the stage to take a bow.
