The holidays - A season to be grateful; A season to be generous

This has been an extremely stressful year that brought unprecedented challenges, changes, and crises. We’ve all experienced loss and sadness. It is always important to give thanks for all the good things in our lives. During these crazy and chaotic times it is essential for our mental and emotional well being to reflect upon our blessings. The Serenity Prayer or Wisdom Prayer has been beneficial for people who are struggling to find acceptance and peace: God, grant me the Serenity To accept the things I cannot change... Courage to change the things I can, And Wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time.

The last two lines are my favorites. This year the holidays may be a difficult time to be jolly. Holiday traditions and celebrations may need to be changed. Hopefully we can live each day enjoying some peace and joy. Those truly are the best gifts we can give ourselves and others. One loss for us was not being able to meet and say “hi” at pet events. Holiday Fun with Your Pets!

elieve it or not, it is almost that time of year. The time when we focus on sending out cards, decorating our houses, buying gifts and outwardly dreading the holiday music (even though we hum merrily along in our heads)! It’s been a different kind of year to say the least, and while it may be a little difficult to get into the holiday spirit, here’s one way that will surely help out! Use this time to have some holiday fun with your pets! After all, our pets are indeed our family and although they may not know exactly what it is they are celebrating, they will be more than happy to oblige. There are many ways to include your pets in the festivities. For instance, does your pet mind wearing a little fashionable clothing? If not, find a Santa’s hat (the dollar stores always have them) and let your pet try it on. If they are open to sitting still for a picture, take it a step further and create a holiday card. As an added bonus, if you have someone who is willing, have them dress up as Santa and let your pet sit on their lap for the photo! Not only will it bring you memories in years to come, but it is the perfect way to send out joyous and uplifting greetings to friends and family! Do you love holiday classics? Well, chances are your pet will love your favorite ones too (without complaint)! Dedicate a certain night, invite your pet to sit next to you and indulge in a cozy, comfortable movie night. What better way to bring in the season than with your pet enjoying the movies with you! To make this night even more special, find a pet-friendly recipe, and start baking homemade dog biscuits. Your pet will sense the excitement and rejoice when they get to sample your masterpiece! And, of course, don’t forget to bake some human varieties too so that you can enjoy your pastries together! If you have a dog that enjoys exercise, take a stroll through the neighborhood and be on the lookout for decorated houses. The 6

animated figures that many people display are beautiful to look at and you might find that your pooch enjoys them as much as you do. Make it a family event if possible! Since your pet has been by your side through it all, there’s one thing we certainly can’t forget during the holidays. Presents! You may reward your pup with little gifts throughout the year, but during this season, why not take your pup to the store to pick out what they want? Take a trip to a pet-friendly store, stroll down the aisles and let your pet lead the way. The excitement on their face is surely enough to put anyone in a celebratory mood! Or, if your pup isn’t the type who enjoys shopping, visit any of the pet stores, or even dollar stores and pick up some new items to give them. Wrap them up and surprise your pup. There’s even wrapping paper with paw prints on it! One thing we can’t forget, Christmas stockings! Does your family have stockings hanging on the mantle? Don’t forget to pick up a stocking for your pet and be sure to fill it too! (You might want to fill it on the day you are celebrating, however, as overzealous pets may get curious and open their gifts way too early)!

This holiday season is the perfect time to pamper your pet and make them feel even more appreciated than they already do. Seeing them happy will bring a smile to your face as well!

Roof Rescue Mom Cat & 5 Kittens

This past year was one of the most challenging times in our lives. Though the pandemic took us all by surprise LVVHS continued its mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. The pandemic precautions created anxiety yet LVVHS was committed to safely continuing its rescue work. Staff and volunteers wore masks, gloves, used hand sanitizer and maintained social distances. LVVHS volunteers were still rescuing stray dogs, cat moms and kittens. Although many spay and neuter clinics were closed, several veterinarians opened their doors to us even though they were dealing with the necessary COVID-19 precautions. Volunteers and fosters of LVVHS responded positively to requests to provide homes. The community generously donated pet food during our pet food drives and with other donations of pet supplies and monetary gifts. THANK YOU for your continued support during this difficult year.

The lights are up, holiday scents are wafting out of the oven, and you are trying to figure out the perfect gifts to make your loved ones smile. As you check off names on your list, remember that someone else could use a little holiday cheer this season… rescue animals!

Here are a few ways that you can spread the joy this year:

DONATE SUPPLIES

Animal rescues and shelters are always in need of supplies to keep the pets comfy and healthy while they wait for their furever families. Consider dropping off food (wet and dry), litter, toys, or a nice comfy bed. Many rescues have owner support programs so if they don’t need the supplies for their adoptable animals, they’ll go to a family struggling to make ends meet for their fur babies.

Bonus Idea: Are you hosting a Secret Santa this year? Instead

of buying generic gifts that will likely be re-gifted the following year, why not select an animal rescue to support, and buy supplies for the homeless animals?

DONATE MONEY

It costs a great deal to vet an animal and then feed them and provide shelter until they get adopted. While rescues charge an adoption fee, that fee rarely covers the full cost. Community donations are essential to continue saving lives. This holiday season; please make a financial contribution to your local rescue.

FOSTER

Being in a kennel can be difficult for an animal. Even in the best of environments, the lack of full-time socialization and cuddles can be hard on them. When you foster an animal, you take them into your home as a temporary part of your family. You snuggle them, help train them, and show them what it means to be truly loved. And, the rescue pays the bills. Fostering saves lives and what better way to spread joy?

Bonus Idea: Sometimes, your foster is the perfect match

for your family. You weren’t looking for another fur baby, but you found one. It’s perfectly okay to adopt your foster and make them a permanent part of your family.

If you’d like to add a new baby to the family, please adopt. There are so many lovable animals waiting for the right home. Plus, with the family off from school and work around the holidays, it’s the perfect time to welcome a new family member.

When it’s time to spread the joy this holiday season, don’t forget our furry friends!

Get together with a few friends and decide to skip the gifts this year. Instead, donate to your favorite rescue in each other’s honor.

If you’ve got a few hours to spare, there are dogs that could use a good walk and some extra socialization, and cats who would love to be brushed (and maybe even have their litter box cleaned). The more time animals spend with humans, the more adoptable they become. If you aren’t comfortable working directly with the animals because “I’ll want to take them all home!” there are other tasks that need to be done. Check with your local rescue and see how else you can help.

Bonus Idea: Turn those few hours into a New Year’s resolution and commit to volunteering all year round. You’ll be surprised how amazing you feel. 10

LAS VEGAS UNITING 4 PETS With the lifting of the eviction moratorium, pet owners may be forced to rehome or surrender their pets; others may just leave them behind, as we witnessed during the 2008-09 crisis. Thousands of animals will need pet food, fostering, temporary boarding, etc. Shelters/rescues are preparing for these with various resources to try to keep pets with their families. Real estate agents are among the first responders to find abandoned pets in vacated properties. It’s important to know whom to call for help. HEARTS ALIVE VILLAGE ANIMAL RESCUE OPENS THE FIRST NONPROFIT, FULL-SERVICE VETERINARY CLINIC IN NEVADA The full-service clinic will provide reasonably priced veterinary care to community animals as well as adoptable animals through the rescue and other nonprofit rescue organizations. Additional services include grooming and a boarding facility. It is estimated roughly 140,000 people living with pets in the Las Vegas area struggle to meet the basic needs of their families. Too often, pet parents are forced to make a difficult decision. Faced with unreasonable veterinary bills, many owners will either have to let their pet suffer or euthanize them for a treatable condition. Some owners will surrender their pets to the shelter in the hopes that they will be cared for. Sadly, the outcome is often tragic for animals entering the shelter with an emergency medical condition. Executive Director Christy Stevens feels that “no animal should ever suffer or be surrendered because of their parent’s inability to afford veterinary care. The clinic will allow HAVLV to provide a more comprehensive solution for at-risk animals, preventing those pets from entering the system in the first place. Every year tens of thousands of animals find themselves in our valley’s shelters and rescues. Animal welfare people are warning about the hazards of pandemic littering. Disposable masks protect us yet pose serious risks to wildlife. The strings on a disposable mask create the same problems for animals as the plastic six-pack rings. Reports have been shared of wildlife getting entangled in the elastic straps. Please protect our wildlife – disposable masks should be thrown in the trash but CUT the strap before you scrap. 12

Keeping our pets happy and healthy is always foremost in our minds. We do our best to make sure they have healthy food, regular exercise, and LOTS of loving affection. With so many health issues to look out for, it is also important to pay attention and take care of any eye issues you may notice. Your pet needs your help to keep their eyes clean and healthy.

hile most eye issues are easily treated, there are some symptoms that you should report to your veterinarian as soon as you notice them. If you find that your pet’s eyes seem swollen, red or irritated, you should have your veterinarian evaluate the condition. Other symptoms that may require a medical opinion are pale, cloudy, squinted, or crusty eyes. Pay special attention to eye discharge that appears to be yellow or green in color. This can be a symptom or an eye infection, which should also be addressed by your veterinarian.

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups of flour at low speed, beating just until mixed. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky.

3. Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thick. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.

The Story of Cisco

Lessons from a dog to be curious about everything in life

Cisco was a dog like no other.

He was the most comical and curious dog I have ever known. He came to us one stormy night in August and startled me when I first saw his glowing, golden eyes peering through the darkness. I soon realized he was just a lost dog just looking for a home. Someone had abandoned him and he desperately wanted a family and somewhere to feel welcome. Cisco visited our house regularly during the summer of 2002. I could not get a good look at him in the daylight for a week or so. When I finally did, I was impressed at how beautiful and poised he was. I knew he must be hungry, so I put out a dish of dry food and water for him every night. He was maybe part Shepherd, part Rottweiler and part giant “something”? It didn’t matter, he was so very handsome. It was soon evident that he wanted us to adopt him by his strategic bribery plan of newspaper delivery. For about a week or so, a perfectly intact newspaper was neatly placed on the top step by our back door every morning. Not a page was torn. This would have been an extremely appreciated gesture except for one thing –we weren’t subscribers to the newspaper! Hmm…I’m guessing that one of our neighbors was probably missing their newspaper for about a week. (Oh my, sorry about that.) Long story short, we took Cisco in and cared for him for many amusing and wonderful years. Throughout our daily life, I learned that Cisco was extremely gentle, loving and CURIOUS. No matter what I was doing in the yard, he was right there putting his nose in all my tools, burying my work gloves, and running off with my tape measure. On our daily walks, Cisco would literally pick up anything he saw value in and would proudly carry it home. One day it was a hamburger wrapper, the next day it was a banana peel. (Fairly embarrassing to be walking a dog with a banana peel in his mouth.) He couldn’t help himself -- that was Cisco. Bailey, our other rescued dog, and Cisco had become the best of friends. They had both been abandoned by someone and I think that helped bond them for life. One morning, as part of our usual routine, I walked them down to the wash for a walk on their leashes. On this particular Sunday morning, I noticed that there was no one around –no walkers, no dogs, no one. PERFECT! I knew I could never trust Bailey to be off-leash, but Cisco maybe? He desperately wanted to run and be free for a while. I couldn’t help but understand that. As I took one last look down the wash, I saw that it was still deserted. “Okay Cisco, go have fun!” I unsnapped his leash and watched him sprint away as he sprayed my face with the cool, damp sand. I was happy to see him run and be free for a 18

bit. About 20 minutes later, I spotted two horseback riders and their dogs coming towards me from the far end of the wash. I needed to get Cisco back before he spotted them. I didn’t know if Cisco even knew what a horse was, much less how to behave around one. Horses, plus dogs, plus a very exuberant Cisco was a potentially dangerous situation. I called Cisco repeatedly, displayed the dog treats I had in my pocket, and desperately tried to coax him back to Bailey and me. “Come on Cisco, it’s time to go home!” Nope, not working at all. His newfound freedom was far more valuable than an incidental treat. I could see the tips of his dark black ears perk up in the dense brush along the side of the wash, but he continued on his quest for adventure. I needed to make a plan...THINK! What could possibly get him to come back? Calling him didn’t work, treats didn’t work, but maybe his insatiable curiosity would? I needed to create a situation that he could not resist! In a desperate attempt to peek his curiosity, I grabbed a piece of a tree branch and began digging a hole in the middle of the wash where I knew Cisco could see me. I exuberantly dug in the sand while I excitedly spoke to Bailey in a loud voice, “What is it Bailey…what is it?!”. As I vigorously pitched the sand in the air with my stick, I acted like I was discovering a treasure in my newly dug hole. (Bailey kept looking at me like with a VERY confused look on his face. Why was I acting so crazy?!) Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Cisco perk up his ears. He was ALL IN for exploring my newly found treasure and HERE he came! Like a newly born moose with too many legs and too little coordination, Cisco burst out of the brush sprinting straight towards us. Amidst the flying sand and flailing legs, even Bailey seemed a little apprehensive at his abrupt arrival. Cisco bullishly pushed Bailey out of the way of our newly discovered, very curious hole. He pushed his nose all around the inside of the hole, and then, when he was totally immersed in his own curiosity, SNAP went the leash. “Gotcha!!” I can’t adequately explain the look on Cisco’s face when he realized that he’d been duped. He was embarrassed, outsmarted, and defeated. If you can put all of those feelings into one expression, that would be it. Poor guy. SO busted! Although I outlived Cisco, he will always have a special place in my heart. He gave me so many wonderful memories, so I do my best not to be too sad over his passing. He enjoyed a good life with my family and finally found the loving home that he so deserved. I will always remember you, Cisco. Thank you for teaching me to be curious about everything in life.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of many cannabinoids produced uniquely by the cannabis family. Unlike its cousin THC, CBD is nonpsychoactive, meaning it does not get the user “high.” CBD is increasingly being touted as an effective treatment in humans for conditions ranging from chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia and inflammation to name a few. As a result, public interest in the use of CBD on pets has also grown. Almost every pet owner considers their furry friends as part of the family and want to keep their animals as happy and healthy as possible. Just like with humans, pharmaceuticals can have some serious side effects with animals. CBD is a fresh alternative to pharmaceuticals, and it is finally getting a lot of attention.

The Endocannabinoid System

CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid system (ECS) in humans and all animals with a backbone. ECS is believed to be the largest receptor system in mammals. The ECS plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis throughout the body and is thought to regulate functions such as sleep, appetite, and mood.

Dosage

There are no current studies on dosage for CBD to correctly and effectively dose a 6-pound Chihuahua or a 125-pound Rottweiler. While not backed by any science, a rule of thumb is to administer 5mg for every 20lbs of the animal.

CBD Pet Products

CBD pet products come in many of the same forms people are using including edibles (treats or capsules) or oils that can be added to food or placed under the tongue. Other applications can also include topical creams or balms that are rubbed directly on the skin.

Conclusion

Research is key, make sure you do your own research on products that you are interested in purchasing. Look for the certificate of analysis (COA). All reputable companies will have recent test results. Purchasing CBD is easy as it is readily available in pet stores and specialty shops in every major city in the United States. Your local pet store is always an excellent resource for information on CBD.

CBD and the FDA

CBD hit mainstream in 2018 when the FDA approved a CBDbased human prescription medication for two rare forms of epilepsy. Even though pet treats and other pet CBD products are sold in stores and online, the FDA has not approved CBD for any type of treatment in animals, which means veterinarians are not allowed to recommend it. That has not stopped eager pet owners from turning to their veterinarians for information and advice regarding the use of CBD. In many cases, the owners have successfully used CBD to treat their own medical conditions and believe it would be equally beneficial for their animals. Right now, most veterinarians advise fur parents that there is no data to support the claims associated with CBD.

Surviving Cancer

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE UNIMAGINABLE They’re the four words no pet parent ever wants to hear: “Your pet has cancer.” However, with November being National Pet Cancer Awareness Month, there’s no better time to make sure you’re prepared should the unthinkable happen.

ight here in Southern Nevada, the only place that offers full-time medical oncology treatments by boardcertified and residency-trained veterinary oncologists, the Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center (LVVSC) sees approximately 2,000 new cancer patients every year. While that number is startling, it doesn’t even include the many cats and dogs that have been under the staff’s continued care. Among those patients is my 15-year-old chihuahua, Orca, who was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on her upper lip in 2013. By the time the cancer was discovered, it had metastasized to her left lymph node, so we were referred to the California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad since that was the closest facility that had the radiation equipment needed to help save her life. For nearly six-and-a-half years, Orca was in remission. Then, this past February during one of her routine check-ups at the LVVSC, her doctors discovered she had splenic lymphoma. Thankfully, this time the best course of action was six months of IV chemotherapy treatments at the LVVSC, so we didn’t have to relocate to California for a month again. Although both instances were scary, Dr. Stephanie Byrne, one of four oncologists at the LVVSC, wants pet parents to know that a cancer diagnosis doesn’t mean their fur babies have an untreatable illness. There are often many treatment options available that can result in a good quality of life. “Our aim with cancer therapy is to improve patient comfort, reduce symptoms related to their illness and help control their illness so that our pets live happily and enjoy their normal routines with their families,” Byrne said. Not surprisingly, treatments can be costly. The LVVSC tries to tailor each patient’s individual care to their family’s financial situation, but if you’re like me, you’re going to want what’s best for your pet. While pet insurance is a great way to reduce the financial burden and pursue more avenues of treatment, it’s important to research different insurance plans before your pet gets sick. When Orca got cancer, I found out the hard way that her insurance only covered services performed by her vet — any specialty doctor appointments weren’t covered. That lack of 24

By H. Turk research on my behalf ended up costing me tens of thousands of dollars over the past seven years since no new insurance companies would cover pre-existing conditions. While it’s great to have an emergency credit card set aside for unplanned situations like these, you aren’t going to want to incur a lot of interest if you can’t pay off the bill each month. Luckily, the LVVSC accepts CareCredit, a health and wellness credit card that offers special financing options, including no interest on medical expenses of $200 or more at select providers so long as you make the minimum monthly payments and pay off your balance within a certain period of time. It’s also important to remember that other people care about you and your pet. I’ve had colleagues start online fundraisers both times Orca was diagnosed with cancer to help raise some money to pay her bills. Every dollar helps in situations like these, so don’t be ashamed to accept help. Of course, an early diagnosis is always the most important factor toward a successful cancer treatment, so be sure to take your pet to the vet for routine wellness exams and don’t be afraid to mention if you notice anything out of the ordinary. I mentioned the bump on Orca’s lip for almost a year before her vet finally biopsied it — trust your instincts. Even if you don’t have a degree in veterinary medicine, you always know your baby best! •

of us are ready to ring in the new year. So, as you’re starting to bring out your holiday decorations, why not include your pets and pet lovers into the festivities. So here are some fun holiday decorations for your pets and gifts for the pet lovers you know. I’m sure we all have plenty of photos of our pets from the holidays; it’s time to get them printed and hung up. An easy way is to use paper or binder clips. Attach them to string and use as garland on your tree or mantel. Don’t have a tree, hang the PHOTO GARLAND on the wall with removable hooks. No matter where you put them, they’ll bring back happy and fun times.

MAKE A TREE JUST FOR THEM. Take their favorite treats and new toys and wrap a string around them to hang on the tree. Now, I’m sure you know to keep this out of reach. WHAT ABOUT A DOG AND CAT WREATH? You can buy the wreaths at a dollar store, then wrap pipe cleaners around the treats and toys and twist onto the wreath. Add a holiday bow or flower and their present is ready to go. This is fun to do for any holiday. Who says they can’t get a gift for Thanksgiving or New Years’. If you have a covered litter box, make it into a GINGERBREAD HOUSE. Use a large cardboard box to form the house and then decorate it. Or for a quick and easy way, wrap it in holiday paper.

Now let’s bring some cheer to your pet lover friends or business associates by giving them gifts for their pets. I don’t know what to get my friends anymore. I also want unique gifts for my business associates. So here are a couple of ideas for you:

Donate to a charity in their pet’s name or one that is near and dear to their heart. For example, my last pup had cancer and her doctor donated to an animal cancer research organization.

I like to put together themed gifts. I have a friend who loves to entertain and has a pup. I fashioned an all puppy theme decorative gift box with dish towels, guest bath fingertip towels, paw print soaps, wine charms (she has plenty of glasses), paper plates, napkins, placemats, table cloth, bone and paw baking molds, cookie cutters, and ice cube trays.

Put together a gift box with treats and toys for their pet. And maybe include a little treat for them; gift cards are always good. If you have a friend who’d loved to get away overnight but won’t because they don’t want to board their pet, give them a pet sitting gift certificate where you’ll stay over for them. I know we live in the digital age, but I still like to read through magazines. So, send them a year subscription to a pet magazine. Hmm, I think one to Las Vegas Pet Scene would be nice. Commission a piece of artwork. Unless you know of a picture they love, give a gift certificate. Or if they can’t seem to get that perfect picture, a photo session with a professional photographer would be great. We had one come to our house many years ago to get a photo with our dog and birds. I have no idea how he did it, but all five of us looked picture perfect.

CATS SEEKING EMPLOYMENT IN CRITTER CONTROL!

ooler temperatures are coming. And with cooler temperatures there is increased activity in mice and rats seeking indoor shelter and food. Many people are discovering that cats provide a safe and effective way to deter these pests. Yet it’s not a new discovery. There are many theories regarding when and where cats were first domesticated. However, the why is well known – they were tamed to control the rat and mice infestations in barns, granaries, monasteries and homes. A mutually beneficial relationship developed between cats and people; cats were fed and they earned their keep by doing pest control. How effective are cats at pest control? Cats are natural predators. Just their scent alone can be effective for getting rid of rodents. Cats mark their territory by rubbing against things leaving their scent. The smell of cats causes fear in mice. It’s as if they’re “hard wired” to fear cats. When rats or mice sense the presence of cats they usually resettle somewhere else. I know, you’re glancing at your fluffy ball of fur that spends 20 to 24 hours a day grooming, sleeping or eating and you’re questioning if they would be good in the role of pest patrol. Probably not - outdoor cats are better suited for controlling rodent population. Nationally, working cat programs are experiencing a demand for working cats

Not all cats can thrive in a home environment especially cats that have not experienced early human contact and socialization. We’re excited that two local shelters have developed working cat programs. The Animal Foundation has a few organizations participating in their Working Cats program and over 200 individuals have adopted cats to keep around their own residence. Since the program started they have placed 226 cats. According to Communications Coordinator, Kelsey Pizzi, the adopters are glad to take these cats. Their rodent problems go away and they get to save a life. In fact, most people hear about the program through positive word of mouth. We provide everything needed to acclimate them to their new outdoor homes, and as long as their new families

Nevada SPCA No-Kill Animal Shelter launched its Patrol Cats program late 2019. The purpose is to turn cats at risk of never finding homes into employeesof-the-month at local residences, businesses, and community buildings. The shelter finds suitable homes for the cats which helps solve the growing rodent problem in the Las Vegas area. This year they placed 15 cats with individuals who have property and can provide shelter for them. The cats are vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. Adoption fees for them are waived, although they must be adopted as a pair to help them settle into their new routine. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES… the job locations and possibilities are endless: barns, warehouses, green houses, private homes, breweries, warehouses, stables and churches, or any place with a pest problem. Remember when you “hire” a working cat you are saving a life and gaining a loyal critter control employee.

Even though we cannot pet them, their presence in our community is a blessing.” John is very enthusiastic about the program of working cats. He encourages more people and businesses to get involved.

I lost my Tuffy Boy on August 26th and was having such a difficult time dealing with it. The article Keeping Memories Alive (Sept/Oct issue) by Elizabeth Parker helped me heal from losing my beloved pet. Here is Tuffy Boy’s Story:

I just arrived home when a neighbor’s friend called out to me to come see her. To my surprise she handed me a children’s shoe box and asked me if I could take it and care for it. I opened the box and out popped a little Chihuahua’s head. Its tiny body wiggled from head to toe and my heart was taken over by this little one. That was fifteen years ago. The angels came and it was time to let him go. He touched so many lives; brought smiles to the children in the cancer ward and children’s hospital. When we went for nursing home for visits we had a difficult time leaving because all the residents would line up to give him a hug and say goodbye. When we retired and moved from Honolulu to Las Vegas Tuffy Boy got to ride in the plane. He sat in our laps and by the time we arrived more than half of the people on the plane had become his friend because of his silly actions and friendly manner. As he got older he was not able to walk because of a problem with his bones. We built him a wheel chair and he managed to get around the home just fine. For now and always you will remain in our hearts - Tuffy Boy. Lisa, Tootsy and Jerry

Want to make someone like a parent, friend, relative, or teacher smile? Let them know how special they are by giving them a personalized item you make yourself!

Cut paper in half to make 2 cards. Fold papers in half to form horizontal or vertical cards.

HOW a piece of construction (or other) paper in half. 1 Cut (EXAMPLE 1) 2 Fold each half horizontally or vertically. (EXAMPLE 1) A: Cut out a picture from either Pet Scene or 3 Option another magazine (with permission).

EXAMPLE 2 Make a Sihouette: Select your picture.

Trace on black paper; Cut out.

Certain foods have been labeled as having “empty calories” – you know the snacky-type food we reach for when we’re too tired or too busy to prepare a meal. They have lots of calories but almost zero nutrients and are high in sugar and fat. Superfoods are the opposite; they are nutritionally dense or rich in vitamins, minerals and proportionally lower in calories. AND Good News – these foods help us and our pets fight disease, boost energy and maintain good health. Here are three superfoods safe for people and pets. Do not add salt or butter to keep them as a healthy food choice.

powers, rich in eye-protecting lutein potassium, fiber and calcium. It can eaten raw or cooked and can help prevent skin and heart problems in older dogs.

PUMPKIN is high in carotenoids,

potassium and vitamin C. High in soluble fiber which helps maintain a healthy digestive system. If you’re buying canned pumpkin buy pureed rather than pie filling which has added sugar or added spices.

Enjoy these foods and share with your pet! NOTE: Introduce new food gradually, one at a time, in small portions for a few days to make sure your pet doesn’t have a reaction to the food.
