Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

“Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.”On March 2, 1836, at the Town of Washington (now called Washington-on-the-Brazos), fifty-nine representatives voted into existence a sovereign nation: the Republic of Texas. And, for almost a decade, Texas existed as a nation. Perhaps the novelist, John Steinbeck, stated it best: Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word.

Granbury will celebrate Texas’ Independence on March 1 and 2 with a parade at 11 am, historical re-enactments, historical exhibits, music and dancing, kids’ activities, and even bull riding on the beach!! (And, our beach is much bigger these days.) Have you noticed all the events, fun hikes and family outings that Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose has to offer? There are even night hikes and campfire fun roasting marshmallows and telling scary stories. Oakdale Park has their Spring Fling with events all day from the 8th through the 15th with several bands performing in the evenings. The Somervell County Expo Center has a miniature horse show, barrel racing, as well as a fashion show and trunk show. We were saddened that the Nature Store at Fossil Rim

Wildlife Center partially burned in February, but their children’s animal center, café, lodgings, and scenic drive are still open for business as usual. A temporary gift store will open later this month. It sure is exciting that Big City Music Revue is performing in the former Granbury Live Theater. Sean Mitchell Productions presents The Gold & Soul of Rock-N-Roll on the 15th and 29th. You can enjoy cook offs of brisket, beans and ribs at the 36th Annual General Granbury’s Birthday Celebration on the Granbury historic square. Some of the fun events include birthday cake and ice cream, arts and crafts vendors, entertainment and contests.

Oh, don’t forget it is Spring Break from the 8th through the 16th for most area schools. That means more people and traffic, so be safe and allow extra time to get where you are going.

FAREWELL LENO, HELLO OSCAR

THE

CHIN WITH THE GRIN

It was as expected. A subdued, at times somber, but always pleasant Jay Leno giving us his last show. For twenty-two years we tuned in to NBC as the host of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” kept us entertained and laughing, watching him magically go from a young quick witted talent with dark hair to the grey-haired older statesman of late night. Never failing to capture number one in the ratings, Jay Leno has been a staple in American households. Getting the keys from “the greatest” Johnny Carson himself, Leno positioned himself into the top rated spot with interviews from the latest and hottest celebrities, politicians, astronauts, and musicians. (Not to mention those hilarious headlines) One can’t help but wonder as he now hands those Tonight Show keys over to Jimmy Fallon, exactly what is on the horizon for Jay Leno? A notorious workaholic and gifted stand-up comedian, with the ability to navigate studio executives, we have seen Jay Leno come back before. Is it the end of Jay Leno on American television or is there a final act yet to be seen? As we all ponder this option, I would like to take a few moments and remember my time spent in The Tonight Show audience back in 2002. During a work hiatus, and just living down the street from Burbank in North Hollywood, I decided one day to see how a person off the street – a

regular Joe- gets tickets to be in the audience of The Tonight Show. After a quick phone call, I found out that it was easy enough. Stand in line outside the doors. That I could do. I found myself the first in line the next morning, 8a.m. sharp in the warm and breezy NBC corridor. Turns out, the line doesn’t start to form until around noon. Live and learn. I was the first in and got front row smack in the middle of Jay Leno. I was so close I could have offended him with bad cologne. I can’t remember who the guests were that first night, or much else I’m afraid, but I had a blast and decided to do it all again the next day. Not wanting to lose my coveted number one spot, I again arrived at 8 a.m. I repeated this behaviour for two and a half weeks until my own job beckoned me back. I would show up every morning at 8 a.m. as if I worked there. I got to know the ushers on a first name basis and was even allowed to wait in the V.I.P. section the last few days I attended. (I do remember sitting next to Carnie Wilson as we watched Tina Turner perform) Jay was so giving of his time to the audience during warm-up. He would always answer questions and try to stump audience members with trivia. I was even brazen enough to ask for a photo with the host after he pointed to me and said “you sure hang out here a lot”, which drew a big laugh from the staff and band. It will be a long haul for another host to make it past the second decade mark in modern-era television, so let’s give accolades where they are due. Farewell Jay Leno… (At least for now)

awards, coupled with talented and deserving some surprise newcomers. Let’s get right to the dish, shall we? Best Motion Picture of the Year: With a whopping total of nine nominees for the biggest award, we are assured a night of watch-worthy television! From AMERICAN HUSTLE to 12 YEARS A SLAVE; the category is as diverse in the story lines and themes as they are in the artists who portray them. Also nominated in this category is CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, GRAVITY, HER, NEBRASKA, PHILOMENA, and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. Having seen all of the films excluding HER, my pick for the top prize goes to DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. Fact is stranger than fiction, and this North Texas story just couldn’t be surpassed by the others in the same field.

OSCAR FEVER 2014 With the Academy Awards just a stone’s throw away, all of Hollywood is gearing up for the industry’s biggest night of the year. Millions of eyes will be glued to the small screen March 2 as the 86th Academy Awards kick off in The Dolby Theatre. As usual, we have the well-known and accomplished big name artists vying for the prestigious

www.myhometownstexas.com

However, I feel that the “powers that be” in the Academy might just bypass my decision and instead go for “AMERICAN HUSTLE”. Who you got? Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role: Again, four internationally known big named stars and one that’s unheard of. Christian Bale for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Bruce Dern for NEBRASKA, Leonardo DiCaprio for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, ChiwetelEjiofor for 12 YEARS A SLAVE, and finally Matthew McConaughey for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. My pick to grab Oscar in this category would surprisingly be Bruce Dern for NEBRASKA. Although I did choose DALLAS BUYERS CLUB for Best Picture, I thought Dern played a diligent and well thought-out character in this film. Perhaps because his face is that of continued on page 17

by the abstract photo artistry that Richard specializes in, paired with Chad’s expertise in high tech computerization and printing. Bettinger Studio does all of their own printing, which allows them quality control and the ability to customize. These wallpapers have unlimited custom capabilities, including colors and the size of the print and are in high demand by interior decorators across the country.

Capturing Moments in Time Through Light Photo artist Richard Bettinger uses light as his medium. Although most photographers use light to create a mood or to highlight a subject, Bettinger uses it to take the most ordinary objects and transform them into beautiful, abstract pieces of art. His work has been called “Vibrant, Alluring and Sexy” by many, and has graced the pages of magazines across the nation including; Architectural Digest, Dallas Modern Luxury, California Home and Design, Interior Design, Luxe and Patron. Richard’s innovative, ethereal visions of the modern world can be seen in his original and limited edition fine art photography, as well as an astounding collection of wall coverings and furnishings based on his photographic designs. The artist’s career in photography really began with the technological advances of digital photography.Bettinger’s subtle variations of shutter speeds, lens manipulations and camera movements, allow him to transform the subject creating a painterly

effect and an otherworldly quality that is far removed from the original. Richard’s groundbreaking technique, which he has given the name, Decompressionism, creates unique and startlingly beautiful images; filled with electrifying natural color and energy. “This new medium satisfies my desire to capture the reflection of life instead of its reality,” says Richard. “You see it in the light against darkness, fire against water and in finding beauty in the contrasts that the visual world presents. Nothing is what it seems.”

Confiding their woes to their respective best friends in letters, they each separately decide to dress down and go walking in the park, hoping for something different. They end up meeting and fall in love with the others’ assumed persona. In the present, best friends Monica and Sam with their respective spouses Lenny and Barb are on vacation. Lenny and Barb go to bed, leaving the friends to talk. The talk soon turns to the idea of having affairs, though they both recognize that they love their spouses very much. familiarity and the picture being in black and white, he comes through as a vibrant character actor in his role. However, once again, I think the Academy might just put me in my place here as well and go with Leonardo DiCaprio for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. Your pick? Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role: What can I say about this category? Let me start with Cate Blanchett, Cate Blanchett, Cate Blanchett. Ever the chameleon, Blanchett delivers again with her character weaving the storyline together in BLUE JASMINE. Ok, now that you know my pick in this one, let’s list the other fine ladies in this category. Amy Adams for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Sandra Bullock for GRAVITY, Judi Dench for PHILOMENA, and the great Meryl Streep for AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Academy will agree with me on this one and award the honor to Cate Blanchett. Although… there’s hardly a loser among the nominees in this field. What say you? Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: Five outstanding performances are given by all five gentlemen in this category. Barkhad Abdi for CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, Bradley Cooper for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Michael Fassbender for 12 YEARS A SLAVE, Jonah Hill for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, and Jared Leto for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. My pick for the night is Jared Leto. Again, we see a real story unfold in this film and is brought to transformation by Leto. Having bucked Hollywood in the past, Jared Leto is back at his craft and portraying a memorable character in this North Texas story. Yet once again, I’m afraid the Academy

Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role: Sally Hawkins for BLUE JASMINE, Jennifer Lawrence for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Lupita Nyong’o for 12 YEARS A SLAVE, Julia Roberts for AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY and finally June Squibb for NEBRASKA. All these ladies gave memorable moments to their accredited film and personally, I was happy to see June Squibb fit perfectly in her role for NEBRASKA and back in the American public’s eye. Yet, I will have to say that any character that Jennifer Lawrence portrays always seems fresh and spot on. (Which is what is supposed to happen, right?) That is why my pick for this category goes to Jennifer Lawrence for AMERICAN HUSTLE. The Academy could go a few ways on this one, but I think we just might be in step here. Who do you think should nab this prize? As always, Hollywood’s biggest night could not happen without the contributions of the REAL talent. The producers, directors, lighting, prop, production assistants, wardrobe folk, script supervisors, editors, and so on and so forth. Those people that work extremely hard behind the scenes without the paycheck that the celebrities see, those diligent and artistic busy bees that love their craft and give up so much to make sure that the show goes on. We thank them all for their talent as well. FUN FACT: Gone with the Wind is the longest Best Picture winner, clocking in at 234 minutes. You could watch the shortest winner, Marty, two and a half times before Scarlett hangs up her ball gown. By: Jimmy Ray Sorrells

19th Century Grace Paired With 21st Century Amenities The year was 1892 when Samuel B. and Nannie Milliken Lancaster moved to Granbury, Texas from Kentucky, purchased the tract of land and built the house that is now Baker St. Harbour Bed and Breakfast. Over the years the property has had numerous owners and many “facelifts” prior to its current life as a peaceful setting for romantic getaways, weddings, and special celebrations. Current owners of the beautiful, historic home are Perry and Terry Wray. Terry moved to Colorado from Texas in the early 90’s where she met her husband Perry. When they decided it was time to retire, they chose Texas as their destination. In May of 2008, Perry and Terry bought Baker St. Harbour from the previous owners and set about using their special combination of hospitality and culinary expertise to make their bed and breakfast the ultimate in comfortable and luxurious lodging. ment you book your accommodations. Perhaps, more importantly, she “makes you feel welcome before you even arrive at the beautiful property overlooking Lake Granbury” say folks who have stayed with the Wrays and enjoyed their genuine hospitality. When you arrive at Baker St. Harbour, you are quickly greeted by Terry and Perry who welcome you into their beautiful 19th century home loaded with all the 21st century amenities you could ask for. Each room is furnished with aesthetics and comfort in mind; beautiful period furniture combines with a clever mix of contemporary conveniences to make your stay truly special. “Chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate chip muffins were ready for us on arrival and the food provided at breakfast was amazing!” commented a recent visitor. Each morning you are treated to a delicious breakfast prepared by chef Perry and his sous chef Terry while the aroma of fresh hot coffee fills the air. In the living room, you are invited to lounge on one of the comfortable couches and choose a book from the shelves of the Wray’s personal library or enjoy your favorite TV show or movie. On a perfect Texas morning, take time out of your day to relax on the beautiful wrap around porch overwww.myhometownstexas.com

of 2013. She and Eady have been dubbed the “New Texas Power Couple” by folks who know in the music industry and the couple have been performing along-side each other for the last couple of years.

“Music has always been a part of my life,” says the artist. “I’ve grieved with songs, I’ve celebrated with songs, I could set my life to a soundtrack. And, because of music and my relationship with it, I’m finally

making a living because of it.” A young girl just discovering Courtney’s music echoes her sentiments saying, “I’ve never had a broken heart, but I’m thankful I have music like this to break my fall when it happens.” Follow Courtney Patton on Facebook and Twitter to find out where she will be performing next and “Stay Tuned” for her website coming soon!

Courtney’s first full-length record,Triggering a Flood, came out on her birthday in May of 2013, and has been racking up accolades ever since. “Just when I though there were enough good female releases already in

hen you click on the website for Courtney Patton it says, “This will be the future home of Courtney Patton Music – Stay Tuned,” and when you listen to her beautiful, soulful Texas sound you know that this is something you should definitely “stay tuned” for! The talented, singer/songwriter from Stephenville, Texas, frequents music venues in the area with friends such as, Jamie Wilson, Brandy Zdan, Adam Hood, Brian Keane, The Trishas and Jason Eady, her fiancé since September

2013 to last a few years until the next wave of female talent rolls in, a new one popped up right in front of me and blew me away,” blogged a recent addition to the talented artists fan club. “Triggering a Flood is one of those I can listen to front to back and not get bored or need to skip a song here and there. Her soulful voice combined with the classic country elements and instruments is perfection!” Touted as one of the most in-demand, essential voices on Texas’ regional, independent roots music scene today, Courtney’s music is a combination of hard-country waltzes and ballads with a thread of ‘70s pop-folk sophistication.

Ketzler’s features all kinds of schnitzel, which is pork loin with various seasonings, breaded and then fried. “Some people think schnitzel is a sausage, but it’s not,” says Angelika. “Just think of things that are “chicken fried”… only with a much smaller amount of oil,” noted a recent customer,“We love venturing out and trying new things and we’re looking forward to the bratwurst and other things on

the menu.” Schnitzel, it turns out, is just the tip of the iceburg in German fare at Ketzlers. The menu includes: rouladend, rolled steak with bacon, onion and pickles; schweinebraten, which is similar to pot roast; goulash; all kinds of sausages; German potato pancakes and sauerkraut with bacon and apples; and that’s just a brief preview of the delicious, authentic offerings this restaurant delivers. What goes better with German food than good German beer? Choose from Ketzler’s large variety of German or domestic beer and wine served in the restaurant’s biergarten patio on one of our beautiful Texas evenings. The pretzels that the Wrights serve at festivals are also on the menu as an appetizer. “Those pretzels were a big hit at the local festivals and we were excited to see them on the menu” said a satisfied restaurant reviewer, “We’ve needed a place like

a traditional taste of NorthWestfahlen Germany to hungry Texas patrons.

Angelika and her family moved from Germany to Texas in 1988 and they have resided in the Austin and Fort Worth areas for the last twenty five years. Growing up in a German family with six children, Angelika started working in restaurants as a teen and wasn’t content with just cooking or serving; she wanted to learn the whole business, from the ground up. It was after a visit to the United States in 1988 that she decided to move from Germany and pursue her father’s dream. Four years ago, Angelica opened a catering business in the Dallas/ FortWorth Metroplex and began working area events as well as festivals. It was at a festival that she discovered the quaint town of Granbury and decided to make it her home. Angelica and her husband Nathan loved the small town charm and atmosphere of Granbury and were especially drawn to the lovely turn of the century buildings on the square.
