Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

April – just the word as it rolls off the tongue brings a smile to the face. Whenever I think of April it brings to mind a vacation I took to south Texas several years ago. We stayed in lovely hillside accommodations perched in the trees surrounded by vegetation. It was April and the beautiful Texas mountain laurels were in full bloom; the trees literally dripping with clusters of periwinkle colored blossoms. The lovely fragrance of those blooms filled the air in the early morning and has lingered with me ever since; If blue gave off a scent that would surely be it!

This year the glorious season has arrived early and, once again, has brought with it a bounty of beauty along with an abundance of activities to usher in another spring. From festivals and music events to Easter egg hunts, this April promises to be a busy and exciting time in our part of the world.

The air soft as that of Seville in April, and so fragrant that it was delicious to breathe it.

April Is Animated

Spring is here again and as bright colors and new life come forth in nature so too does the silver screen light up with animation. For those of you with kids to entertain, this is a great month for the movies with plenty of PG picks to choose from.

April fourteenth opens with only two films but they’re highly anticipated. For those of you who enjoy the fast pace, tire-screeching, car crashing, heist films that are the “Fast and Furious” franchise, this is your week. Followed by an action-packed space odyssey filmed with humor and heart titled “Spark”. This will be a good one for the kids and stars Jace Norman and Hilary Swank. April twenty first brings with it five new offerings. The animated feature “Leap” is set in late nineteenth century. Only two thrillers come out this month: “Unforgettable”, starring Rosario Dawson and Kathrine Heigl is sure to run a chill down the spine and “The Promise”, with Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Le Bon, and Christian Bale explodes with romantic rivalry. April twenty eighth ends this month in films with three wide releases including our only original comedy of the month. “How to Be a Latin Lover”. Also, sliding in this week, is “Sleight”, a film about a young street magician (Jacob Latimore) whose parents pass away causing him to turn to a life of crime to care for his little sister. The final film of the month is “The Circle”; Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for a tech & social media company in Silicon Valley. By Wyatt Nantz

In honor of the upcoming, annual Granbury Wine Walk, the weekend of April 28th and 29th here are a few tid-bits to wet your appetite. The wine walk gives local wineries and vineyards an opportunity to share their wines, and accessories with the public. But, it is more than just sipping wine. It is an opportunity to support local, to learn about the viticulture of our great state and what it has done. Better still, seeing what it can do and how wine grown here can enhance our economy, even our culture. And, it benefits several local charitable organizations.

Photos by Shad Ramsey: Reds on the Square, Artefactz, Home Sweet Home, Spellbound, Destiny, Doug’s Sports House, Connie’s, Pan Handle. Incorporating wine into events like wine glass painting, cooking classes and even the occasional murder mystery dinner demonstrates that wine grown, produced, served and purchased here reflects the very nature of Texans, relaxed and flexible. Wine is not snobbish. In Texas it is varied, hearty and pairs well with outdoor events.

Some trends to be looking for this year are wine in a can. Yes, I said canned wine, perhaps not at the Wine Walk. But, it’s definitely for the laid back wine drinker. Sales have increased over the last year and are expected to more than double in 2017. And, how about this, a “Yeti-like” stemless, stainless steel tumbler? These beauties can be monogramed, glittered or topped with a spill proof lid. Give one as a wedding gift or take one along on a fishing trip. One of my all time favorite things for wine drinkers is wine-wipes. They get rid of that pesky purple color on your teeth and lips after drinking a robust red.

Whatever you like, odds are you will find it at the Granbury Wine Walk. Taste, support, learn and most of all have fun, wine was never meant to be a snob. By Marie Valden www.myhometownstexas.com

healthy me now!

Want to infuse your home with a little happiness, without having to go to extremes? There are a few mystical, even if uncommon ways to bring positive energy and personal happiness to flow through out your house. Crystal Energy Healing

There is just something about shiny rocks that appeals to me. Crystals are a very subtle practice, setting crystals throughout a space is believed to affect the energy of a room, and those who inhabit it. Sure, it sounds a little crazy to think rocks can affect mood, but proponents of crystal therapy believe in the beneficial effects of placing crystals in the home. Crystal healers recommend trying hematite to protect the home from negative energy and black obsidian to absorb any negativity from others. Want to bring in that loving feeling? Try sticking a rose quartz crystal in the common area, this light pink crystal brings feelings of love and joy wherever it is.

DoTerra Essential Oils

Ever walk into a friend’s home or your favorite yoga studio and immediately felt a sense of belonging? That is probably due in part to the use of essential oils. Essentials oils can be used to create a calm and balanced atmosphere. Diffusing oils at home can purify the air, cleanse the energy and directly affect the mood of anyone who enters. DoTerra offers relatively inexpensive, especially when diffused, pure essential oils in wide range of scents. Play around with different combinations or choose one of their prepackaged blends to clear away negative energy, create a relaxing environment, remove allergens and even purify the air.

Smudging

A Native American form of clearing energy in a space. Energy can become stagnant after a while. Some believe bad luck happens due to energy getting, figuratively stuck. Smudging requires burning dried and fresh herbs such as sage, cedar, lavender and juniper while allowing the smoke to dissipate into the room to cleanse the energy of the space. This process is deeply rooted in ceremony and should be researched as to how to practice properly. To increase your personal happiness come join me for a mood boosting yoga session at Chandor Gardens every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 or at a Hiking Yoga session at LG Ranch. Activities Activities

One of the most asked questions at the event has been, “is the grape grown here?” More and more that answer is a resounding, “yes”. The wine industry as a whole is growing in Texas, in leaps and bounds. Most of the wineries at the wine walk are small, dedicated producers who aim to give Texas fruit a path to it’s highest calling.

Abundant April Activities a spectacular array of springtime fun!

Two of those wineries/vineyards are Barking Rocks Winery and Lost Oak Winery. Both are bringing some amazing wines to the table. Barking Rocks for instance will have an Italian Sangiovese, typically used as the base grape for Chianti. This wine is a medium bodied red that can be earthy, fruit forward and pairs well with a lot of different food. Lost Oak will be presenting a full-bodied white, Viognier (vee-own-yay) from Rhone, France at the VIP event along with their Tempranillo.

ACTIVITIES

April is alive with enough activities to spark the interest of everyone. Granbury, Weatherford, Glen Rose and Springtown are gearing up to provide folks with what promises to be a spectacular array of springtime fun!

Granbury’s annual Wine Walk will be held Friday, April 28th

Attendees will enjoy a true taste of Texas offered by a host of celebrity chefs including: Chef Gerard Thompson, Chef Curren Dodds, Chef Michael Watkins, Chef Chris Garcia, Chef Phil Greer, Gary Folger, Laurie Williamson and Chef Megan Potts. Savory hors d’oeuvres combine with live jazz music and Texas wines to provide an unforgettable evening. As many as fifteen wineries participate in the Friday and Saturday event along with food vendors, music and art. Wine Walkers will enjoy a treat for all the senses as they sip delicious Texas wines and stroll around the Historic Downtown Granbury Square packed
