“I love the Christmas-tide, and yet, I notice this, each year I live; I always like the gifts I get, But how I love the gifts I give!” ~ Carolyn Wells I’ve been thinking a lot about the upcoming Holidays and, let’s face it, stressing over what to give the people in my life this year. Like so many of us, I view the season with a mix of excitement and dread. Gift giving on a limited budget is sometimes a daunting task.

that she has passed on, I try as best I can to remember the importance of good gift giving. Lacking her immense talents, more often than not I am forced to purchase “storebought” gifts for friends and family; a real challenge if you’re not satisfied with just any old thing.

An old friend of mine once said, “poverty demands creativity.” She was the most creative gift giver I have ever known; even after all these years, I still treasure her little homemade gifts more than any I’ve ever received. From hand-written little books with quirky illustrations, full of inside jokes and memories that we shared, to exquisitely needlepointed pillows, she always made each gift personal. Even when it was a flea market or antique store find it was always apparent that she knew who I was and honored our unique friendship. As a result, now

Luckily, our community is simply chock full of shops and markets that contain an abundance of unique finds. From the historic square in Downtown Granbury to the shops on York Avenue in Weatherford and every town in between you will find the perfect gifts for the special folks in your life. Many stores and shops have extended hours throughout the Holidays and designated evenings to stroll and shop at your leisure – stress free! For the gift that keeps on giving, even when the Holidays are over, be sure to

How to Keep Holiday Stress in Check

R

elatives, parties, shopping, oh my! It’s easy to see why the most wonderful time of the year can also be one of the most anxiety-producing. Try a different stay-cool strategy each day, and from now on your troubles will be out of sight! Instead of driving around to see your neighborhood light displays, slip on your jacket and walk. Just 20 minutes of exercise elevates serotonin levels and with it your mood! Or sign up for a hiking and yoga sessions at LG Ranch. Adding nature to the mix is gratifyingly stress busting. Drop some coin in the Salvation Army bucket. Giving even a little to charity activates the same “reward circuit” in the brain that lights up when you indulge in chocolate or other fun activities such as Yoga at Chandor Gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm. Just Breathe! Breathe in for four counts, out for eight. Don’t force the air out (that will create tension) just release. Try this any where, at a party, the grocery store, in traffic—anytime you feel stressed. This type of exhalation stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system which lowers your heart rate and relaxes the entire body. You can experience different types of breathwork at both Hiking and Yoga or Yoga at the Gardens.

Be present. While baking batch number 2,759 of holiday goodies, stop and take in the sights, sounds and smells of all those delicious homemade desserts. Stop worrying about the future and take stock of the moment, bringing yourself back to the present silences anxieties. Yoga at Chandor Gardens or LG Ranch can also bring you back to the present. While out shopping, duck into an essential oil, candle or bath and body shop. Rub on some lotion or inhale a scent. Lavender and ylang-ylang scents are particularly soothing, but any favorite scent will do. Every time you treat yourself, you feel more in control. So give yourself some credit and amplify the physical stress relieving effect of pampering yourself.

Shopping Local Makes Everyone Feel Good!

It is shopping season! And, it is all in the square. Why go anywhere else? No bah-humbug here. The Granbury square is donned in her holiday finest and brimming with shops that offer jewelry, home décor, kitchen gadgets, sports memorabilia, clothing, boots and shoes for all those upcoming parties, toys, art, specialty home made goods and just about anything you can imagine. Most stores will be offering treats, and libations along with their extended hours so you can take time to revel in the aroma of candles, perfumes and baked goods. Feel the buttery leather of boots, and the cloud like softness of fur lined slippers. Bask in the warmth of the season as you stroll www.myhometownstexas.com

leisurely from one store to the next. Listen to carolers and have a chat with Santa. Make it a weekend and stay at one of the many bed and breakfasts or hotels. Girl’s Night Out, in Granbury, on the second Saturday of each month, will be on December 10th. Grab a couple of girlfriends and get busy checking off your list. You may even want to take a break at one of the many area wineries, bistros or breweries like Farina’s Winery and Bistro, Barking Rocks Winery, D’Vine Wine, and on Saturday’s at Revolver. Pick your weekend and spend time with friends and family and make this holiday season a time of real peace and joy.

Remember, many shops are offering free gift wrapping over the holidays! By, Marie Valden

SHOPPING

W

ith the tumultuous year we have all had, I think we are ready for some Christmas cheer. There are only, 38 days until Christmas; so why spend it running around the malls, or sitting at home pounding the keys on your keyboard giving away your personal information. Head to Granbury, Weatherford, Aledo, Glen Rose, or Springtown where getting into the Christmas spirit is a pleasure not a chore.

John Noel – A Singer/ Songwriter with Style One of my favorite words in the English language is “serendipity” which means “a happy accident”. On a recent trip to Vintage Grill in Weatherford, a friend and I enjoyed one of those rare serendipitous moments when we happened upon a truly remarkable artist playing keyboard and singing on the patio. John Noel is a pop artist that fuses jazz, soul, and gospel into his original songs. Although he has been playing piano since childhood, he has only been

composing original works for the last two years. John says he hopes to release a record in 2017, and has been working with Carrie Underwood’s musicians to help make his dream a reality. Check out the Vintage Grill website for a listing of live music on the patio. John will be playing there once again in December and, believe me, you shouldn’t miss it! Take time out of your busy Holiday schedule, relax on the cozy heated patio with a drink and a tasty appetizer, and enjoy the beautiful sounds of this very talented artist.
