Wonderful May – Everybody’s Got the Fever! It’s spring fever.... You don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so! - Mark Twain What is this feeling? Not altogether unpleasant but certainly undeniable. We’ve caught it like a cold and there is biological proof that spring fever symptoms really do exist! We don’t have an actual fever and it’s not going to put us to bed for a week but human beings experience a surge of energy in spring due to an increase in sunlight. The change in daylight triggers a change in the amounts of hormones our brains produce and that, along with an altered amount of melatonin, contribute to this strange phenomenon we call spring fever. You’re eating lighter meals, you’re sleeping less, you can’t seem to stop smiling, quite suddenly you feel the need to exercise and clean house…it’s a real thing folks! For most of us it’s a welcome sickness that contributes to an overall sense of well-being. I don’t know about you but anything that urges me to get off the sofa and move around is a plus in my book.

Held on the Langdon Center lawn, you can dine and dance amid art and the stars. Later in the month Granbury hosts its annual tribute to all things 50’s when it kicks off Memorial Day Weekend with Cruisin’ Granbury. This popular festival features hot rods, food, entertainment, shopping and, best of all, Elvis! The three-day event ends with a Memorial Day Tribute to the men and women who have given their lives in the defense of our country.

If you’re looking for something to use up a little of that excess energy this spring our activities pages are just chock full of festivals and events that are sure to help with that. Saturday, May 13th the Dora Lee Langdon Center in Granbury is the site for the Granbury Arts Alliance’s Dinner in White (Spring Edition). This Mother’s Day weekend event is their second pop-up picnic modeled after an event that began in Paris in 1988 and has since become an international sensation. It’s an outdoor dinner attended in elegant, all white attire, with

Clark Gardens in Weatherford celebrates with a day full of gardening activities including: an art in nature exhibit, a bee hive exhibit, Vermi composting, a butterfly educational exhibit, a presentation on attracting native pollinators to your garden, and a Zentangle Class that teaches you how to create beautiful works of art with ink on small paper tiles. Make plans to attend one, or maybe all, of the many entertaining and educational events offered by our community this month. May Starts with Marvel Friday, May fifth, brings us one of the most anticipated films of the year, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2”. For those of you who don’t already know, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on a Marvel comic first published in 1969. Volume One was a hit, earning over seven hundred and seventy million worldwide. Volume Two will address the questions set up in Volume One about Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) biological father. Friday, May twelfth, begins with “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” starring Charlie Hunnam, who you may recognize from “Sons of Anarchy”, playing the iconic Arthur. For those more interested in comedy, “Snatched” is a perfect movie for Mother’s Day, starring Amy Schumer as Emily Middleton, a dreamer who persuades her careful mother Linda (Goldie Hawn) to travel with her on an exotic vacation where misfortune and hilarity ensue. Lastly, this Friday, is “Lowriders” a drama set in LA about a young graffiti artist who uses his talent to help his family’s prize winning, classic car painting business. Friday, May nineteenth, bursts in with “Alien: Covenant”. Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in the second chapter of a prequel trilogy that began with “Prometheus”. It’s possible that “Everything, everything” will be the tear jerker of the month about a teen with severe immunodeficiency who decides she wants to date the boy next door. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” is the fourth installment in the ongoing series of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movies. This time we are taking a road trip to attend Me maw’s 90th birthday party. Thursday, May twenty-fifth welcomes back the old classic “Baywatch” in which Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson), an experienced lifeguard, butts heads with a brash new recruit played by (Zach Effron). When Mitch begins to believe his beloved bay is in danger his team will come together to save it. This movie should have a similar tone to recent action comedies like “Twenty-One Jump Street”. This movie will also feature the return of Pamela Anderson to the series. Friday, May twenty-sixth sails into theatres with “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”. Johnny Depp returns in his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow with Orlando Bloom resurfacing as Will Turner but with a new adversary, Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who is determined to kill every pirate at sea to escape from the Devil’s Triangle. Captain Jack’s only hope will be to seek out the legendary trident of Poseidon; which in mythology bestows power and control over the seas. A little trivia for the month: the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films have earned over 3.7 billion worldwide. Most recently, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” earned over a billion dollars alone. So, it will be interesting to see whether “Guardians of the Galaxy” or “Pirates of the Caribbean” will be the number one box office sensation this month. By Wyatt Nantz

healthy me now! A Beginners Guide to Yoga The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline. A male who practices yoga is called a yogi, a female practitioner, a yogini.

Yoga is not a religion. It is a philosophy that began in India an estimated 5,000 years ago. The father of the

classical eight-limbed path, is said to be Patanjali, who wrote the Yoga Sutra. These writings provide a framework for spiritual growth and mastery over the physical and mental body. Yoga sometimes interweaves other philosophies such as Hinduism or Buddhism, but it is not necessary to study those paths in order to practice or study yoga, nor is it necessary to change any of your religious beliefs.

Patanjali is believed to

have collated the practice of yoga into the Yoga Sutra an estimated 2,000 years ago. The Sutra is a collection of 195 statements that serves as a philosophical guidebook. It also outlines eight limbs of yoga: the Yamas (restraints), Niyamas (observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing), Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyani (meditation), and Samadhi (absorption). As we explore these eight limbs, we begin to refine our behavior in the outer world, and then we focus inwardly until we reach Samadhi (liberation, enlightenment). Most gym oriented yoga practices are focused on the third limb, asana, which is a

program of physical postures designed to purify the body and provide the physical strength and stamina required for long periods of meditation. For a more indepth yoga experience consider attending a yoga studio.

Hatha Yoga refers to a set of

asanas or postures, and sequences of asanas, designed to align your skin, muscles, and bones. The postures are also designed to open the many channels of the body—especially the main channel, the spine—so that energy can flow freely. Hatha is translated as ha meaning “sun” and tha meaning “moon.” This refers to the balance of masculine aspects—active, hot, sun—and feminine aspects— receptive, cool, moon—within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We also learn to balance our effort and surrender in each pose.

Not Flexible? You are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that’s a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play golf in order to take golf lessons. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible. All you really need to begin practicing yoga is your body, your mind, and a bit of curiosity. But it is also helpful to have a pair of yoga pants, or shorts, and a t-shirt that’s not too baggy. No special footgear is required because you will be barefoot. It may be helpful to bring water to class with you, but you should refrain from eating a large meal 2-3 hours before class. As your practice develops you might want to buy your own yoga mat, but most studios will have mats and other props available for you.

Yoga is a powerful tool for self-transformation. It asks us to bring our attention to our breath, which helps us to still the fluctuations of the mind and be more present in the unfolding of each moment.

Jeff Mew will perform Elvis’ greatest gospel songs from Noon to 1p.m. and from 3 to 4p.m. there will be a contest to find the best aspiring Elvis impersonator. Nationally famous Elvis tribute artist, Victor Trevino Jr., will be performing at 5p.m. that day. Monday is the final day of the festival and begins at 10a.m. with Granbury’s Memorial Day Commemoration and the Texas country band, Southern Anthem, playing at 1p.m. Make it a truly great Memorial Day Weekend by staying over at one of Granbury’s beautiful Bed and Breakfasts or Boutique Hotels. Not content to be just a car show, this festival is for the entire family. Over the course of the weekend, there will be live entertainment, games for the kids, street dancing, and contests for the adults. Rounding out the event, on Monday, there will be a Memorial Day ceremony commemorating our service men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country. On Saturday evening a street dance will be held from 5-8p.m. and Granbury Roller Derby gals will be showing off their skating skills around the square. Also scheduled for Saturday are photo opportunities with Elvis, a Hoola Hoop contest, and Hot Dog and Apple Pie eating contests! Food vendors and area merchants along with arts and crafts vendors will be open for business so you can grab a snack and do a little shopping along with looking at some gorgeous vintage cars. The car show includes participants from car clubs all over Texas and the Southwest. The 14th Annual Texas Steak Cookoff is just around the corner. On Saturday, May 20, 2017, cooks, vendors, and tourists from around the state will make their way to historic downtown Hico. The Texas Steak Cookoff is the largest steak cookoff in the Southwest, drawing thousands of tourists from all over the country. The Cookoff is a competition for the best tasting 12 ounce Texas rib-eye steak. Besides a great steak dinner, attendees and participants enjoy shopping, live entertainment, and a separate wine tasting event.
