Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

It’s February and Life is Like a Box of Chocolates! Chocolate and love – they seem to go together. Have you ever wondered why? As it turns out, chocolate really does have a history as a love food. Passion for chocolate is rooted in Mesoamerican history. It was a highly-prized luxury item among Mayan and Aztec upper class elites, who were known to savor a drink that combined roasted cacao beans with cornmeal, vanilla, honey and chilies. Cacao beans were as valuable a commodity as gold, and were even used to pay taxes levied by Aztec rulers. When Marie Antoinette married Louis XVI in 1770, she brought her personal chocolate maker to Versailles. He created recipes such as: chocolate mixed with orchid bulb for strength, chocolate with orange blossom to calm nerves and even chocolate with sweet almond milk to aid in digestion. Louis IV drank it daily and Madame du Barry was said to use chocolate mixed with amber to entice her male acquaintances.

All in all, chocolate has never been chaste. Movies from the earliest days of “talkies” have used chocolate as a symbol of seduction. Jean Harlow’s performance in the 1933 film “Dinner at Eight,” forever linked chocolate to decadent indulgence. Draped in satin, Harlow lounges in bed on a heart-shaped pillow and suggestively nibbles her way through an enormous heartshaped box of chocolates. So, it just makes sense that a holiday dedicated to love would eventually combine with a food that is so closely associated with that emotion. Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated with a variety of items from stuffed animals, balloons, and cards to bottles of wine, flowers, and jewelry but, in my opinion, nothing tops the traditional box of chocolates. Around this neck of the woods, you’ll find everything you need to make this February 14th one to remember. Treat

your sweetie to a scrumptious dinner at one of the many fine dining establishments offering special Valentine’s Day menus. Area florists are on high alert with a variety of beautiful plants and flowers that have been specially brought in to celebrate the holiday – but, remember to order early if you want roses, as those are the first to go out the door on the 14th! Movie theaters will have a variety of film offerings in February, many of which will be Oscar winners. Or, why not make a romantic day last a bit longer and stay overnight at one of the beautiful bed and breakfasts or boutique hotels in our area? Check around for special Valentine offerings that sometimes include chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne waiting when you arrive!

bleachers on the 17th. The family comedy of the month may be “Rock Dog,” an animated film with Luke Wilson playing a guard dog that just wants to rock; rolling into theaters on the 24th.

A Film Filled February This month has a little bit of everything where movies are concerned. If you are looking for romance, “The Space Between Us,” staring Asa Butterfield, promises to be a Romeo and Juliet story in space. For those of you who are looking for something with a more adult rating, “Fifty Shades Darker” may be the ticket. The Space Between Us” has a release date of February 3rd, while Fifty Shades Darker is slated for the 10th, and both are just in time for Valentine’s day. One of the more talked about action films in recent years was “John Wick,” an action-packed adrenalin rush of a film, starring Keanu Reeves. On February tenth, chapter two of this “shoot-em-up” will hit theaters. “The Great Wall” is another offering in the action adventure category. It stars Matt Damon and is set in a fantasy world where he must confront an unimaginable and unstoppable force. “The Great Wall” comes to theaters February 17th. The final action film of the month is “Collide,” starring Nicholas Hoult; this is one for the highoctane crowd, so race to theaters on the 24th. In comedy, this month, Lego has a new offering in the form of “The Lego Batman Movie,” with the familiar voice of Will Arnett as Batman, hitting theaters February 10th. If animation isn’t your thing, “Fist Fight” is an R rated comedy with Charlie Day and Ice Cube playing two teachers in a school preparing to Fist Fight each other; so, meet behind the

If horror films are your thing, you’ll be rushing to the theater for the next Ring film. That’s right, the creepy girl and her VHS are back on February 3rd in “Rings,” starring Laura Wiggins and Aimee Teegarden. Looking for something more original in the horror department? Check out “Patient Zero” or “A Cure For Wellness.” Both will be near you on the 17th. “Patient Zero” is a pandemic infection film starring Matt Smith and Natalie Dormer. “A Cure For Wellness” is a must see for thriller people; if you found yourself enamored with “Shutter Island,” this is for you. With actors like Jason Isaacs and Dane DeHaan, this movie should be a good addition to the cerebral thriller genre. Lastly, in the horror category for this month is “Get Out,” a movie about a boyfriend who goes to meet the girlfriend’s parents and discovers that things are definitely not what he expected.

Activities By HealthyMeNow.Net It’s been said that we teach what we need to learn, and so I write not as someone who has it all figured out, but rather as someone who is struggling to make sense of it all. Exhausted, stressed, and irritated there just wasn’t enough of me to go around. I had been trying to do things for everyone else without taking care of me first. I thought if I kept going, giving and doing, then one day I’d feel happy and I’d find my purpose. It never happened. We search for happiness for our purpose, thinking that once we find the answer – that thing we are meant to do – we will find peace. But as we look around, comparing ourselves to others, deciding what we think we ‘should’ be doing, we are rarely fulfilled and more often than not, exhausted by our efforts to fit in with the crowd. So give yourself some love by setting the tone for your day, wake up to a soft light or a wind chime alarm. Hit the snooze and snuggle under those blankets a little longer. Scroll through facebook-NoNoNO We’re at the mercy of the external world when we launch into the day without plugging into ourselves first. Before getting out of bed, ask yourself “How are you feeling today?” Talk to yourself like you are your own best friend. If feeling a bit off, ask yourself how to get back on track. Ask what do I need to do and whatever it is, do it.

12 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Take five minutes in the morning for meditation. Just five minutes benefits you all day. Meditation creates space for honesty in all its beautiful and brutal forms. Be honest and listen to yourself, your needs. Just listen! What makes you feel alive? What makes your heart sing? Follow whatever it is that brings you the most joy and share it with others because it is this shimmering passion that lights up the world and makes more of a difference than you can ever imagine! Allow your perspective to shift as you spend more time with yourself. Listen to your heart. Listen to your feelings. And that means all of them. So pay attention, acknowledge what is present and embrace it all – embrace everything that makes you human, realize this is the only way to be. And remember that whatever you do, you are not alone, ever. We live on this planet with billions of other people and are connected to an infinite source of love and support. We are not meant to struggle. Reach out for help and ask for what you need. There is nothing you need to do or not do to be more or less worthy. Forget trying to be perfect and know that right now, you are perfect as you are. If you’re anything like me – and yes, as I said, I am learning too – your mind may drift to every reason that this isn’t so, but if you can take a deep breath and look yourself in the eye with half the compassion and acceptance you so easily offer your best friend, then you’re well on your way to recognizing the truth of who you are.

LOVE is complicated... finding the right gift, we’ve got you covered!

alentine’s Day is a day to celebrate Love. Not just romantic love but love for family, friends and neighbors. Remember giving little cards to all your classmates, gift giving can be that easy again. Head out to the Historic Granbury Square and feast your eyes on the many treasures you can find to show that special someone how much you care. Doug’s Sports House has all you could ask for to find for the guys and gals of all ages you love with collegiate and professional sports team apparel and accessories. You may even find a new leash or sports team chew toy for your furry friend. Everything old is new again, how about hippie chic, hobo style, feminine and romantic. You’ll find it all at The Shoppes at Cheerful Village including the flowy, loose fit, print tunics that are a hot fashion item this season, you can dress in style and comfort at the same time. And you can’t go wrong with a

little something in jewelry, which is always a real treat. Another great gift idea is a gift certificate, or two or three from her favorite shops. Gather a few of her favorite sweet treats and create a basket of shopping fun. Stuff N Nonsense has women’s clothing, fashion jewelry and accessories galore for every woman you love for your mom, your wife or your daughter. Want to surround your loved ones in luxury and make the whole family happy, head over to JR Spas for a look at the season’s latest Vita Spas. This is the gift of love that keeps on giving all year round. How about a new bathtub? Turn a dreary tub into a new experience at Best Buy Walk-In Bathtubs.

If you’ll be in Glen Rose, stop in at Texas Treasures, or Miss Dixie’s Cottage, which has the latest in furniture and décor or look for a great new outfit at Strut Your Stuff. Cheerful Heart Gifts and Boutique on Hwy 67 even has a man-zone with a curved screen T.V. In Weatherford, Twisted Snifter is perfect for the guys, with craft beer, small batch spirits, TX products, hard to find wines and gift baskets. New to the square is Hope Boutique. Drop by and check out their baby/kid and women’s fashions. You can stop by some of your favorites like Zennias 2 Zebras, Just Peachy Home Décor and Truly Trendy Boutique. Of course for a special sweet treat you’ll want to stop at Back Home Bakery where a diet is just a cupcake without sprinkles. By, Marie Valden
