une brings us, yet another, holiday‌ Father’s Day. Lately, I have been pondering the need for all these special days. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparent’s Day; and then there’s Labor Day, Memorial Day, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas‌the list just goes on and on. It’s easy to believe that all these holidays are just a way for retailers and venues to pick our pockets and fill their coffers all year long. That would be the cynical way of looking at that continuously growing list but today I had a minor revelation. Maybe another, more redeeming, reason for these forced celebrations is to wake us up with a little shove every now and then so that we don’t become complacent and forget the need to celebrate human kind. These events bring us together; require us to concentrate on others, to put down our cell phones and lap tops for a brief time, to honor the wonderful men and women who have sacrificed to make our lives better, and to give us a sense of tradition and continuity in a world that is sorely in need of those values. Here at My Hometown’s Texas we try to help in some small way to make all of life’s celebrations special by supplying you with the information you need to construct a day, a weekend, or

even a year full of entertaining, fun, and educational outings that you and your family will always remember. Your local communities are kicking it in high gear this June with Father’s Day activities that range from Hot Rods in Granbury to live music concerts at Oak Dale Park in Glen Rose and Heritage Park Amphitheater in Weatherford. Area restaurants will be providing all of Dad’s favorite fare and retailers have stocked their shelves with enough goodies to please every man on your list this year. Check out the activities, restaurant, and live music pages of the magazine for a full list of all the fun! Whatever you decide to do this Father’s Day enjoy it with the folks you love and care for. Eat, drink and be merry! We won’t have the opportunity to celebrate again until July. đ&#x;˜Š Enjoy your day Dad!

We would like to take this opportunity to correct an error in last month’s issue. What should have been A Granbury Salute: Memorial Weekend was inadvertently touted as Cruisin’ Granbury and the article contained outdated information. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our readers or advertisers and assure you that we will be more vigilant in future. Elvis has left the building!

riday, June second, brings us the first, and possibly the most anticipated movie of the month, “Wonder Woman”; a film based on the comic of the same name and set in the already popular DC cinematic universe. In this origin story, Diana (Gal Gadot), must fulfill the destiny long ago bestowed upon her by the gods and become the hero known as Wonder Woman. The second opening week movie is “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” based on the children’s book. This animated movie tells the story of two overly imaginative pranksters named George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who hypnotize their principal (Ed Helms) into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

Friday, June ninth, only one film is slated for wide release. A return of “The Mummy”, starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, that Universal Pictures is calling an action-adventure tentpole with horror elements, will be kicking off a series of monster film reboots from Universal.

City Lights - Hudson Oaks

1000 Cinema Dr. | (817) 341-3232 schulmantheatres.com

Friday, June sixteenth the week kicks off with, “All Eyes on Me”, a movie that chronicles the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur (Demetrius Shipp, Jr.). Later in the week, the comedy “Rough Night” makes its debut; five friends rent a beach house in Miami for a bachelorette weekend and accidentally kill a male stripper. “Cars 3”, featuring the voice of Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen, releases this week also and is the third in a series of extremely popular animated films the kids will be excited to see.

Wednesday, June Twenty-first brings us just one movie but that movie features giant fighting robots, that’s right… another Transformers film! “Transformers: The Last Knight” shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock). Knowing the directing style of Michael Bay this is sure to be another explosive filled film. Wednesday, June twenty-eighth is a good day for car chase fans out there with the premier of “Baby Driver”. Baby (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best driver in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to break out of his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss, (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a heist threatens his life, love, and freedom. Friday, June thirtieth brings us the last two wide release films this month. “Despicable Me 3” continues with the adventures of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters, Margo, Edith and Agnes and, of course, the Minions. Our final film features comedic geniuses Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler in “The House”. The couple lose their daughter Alex’s

(Ryan Simpkins) college fund and are so desperate to get it back that they decide to open an illegal casino in the basement of their neighbor Frank’s (Jason Mantzoukas) house. Fun Fact: The Wonder Woman comic has been published continuously by DC, except for a brief hiatus in 1986, since its inception in 1941. By, Wyatt Nantz

healthy me now! Farmer’s Market What’s in Season?

By HealthyMeNow.Net

Summer is almost here! Can you feel it? The sight of fresh cherries, blueberries and strawberries means that the season of sunshine is near.

Avocados, good gracious, how

I love avocado. Avocado on a sandwich is almost impossible to beat, but it’s also a fantastic addition to Mexican meals and fresh green recipes of any kind, really. The avocados you’ll find in stores now are probably from Mexico, where avocados are in season year-round, but California avocados are in season now, too.

Beets I’m slowly changing

my tune about beets. I like them raw in salads and even in my juice. I’m still learning to appreciate roasted beets, though. Beets are tremendously earthy and can be eaten fresh, cooked or roasted. Some, like the golden variety, are pretty sweet.

Cherries, Sweet, red cherries will grace us with their presence this June. I like to snack on fresh cherries, but roasting cherries really brings out their inherent sweetness. Roasted or not, they are great with balsamic vinegar. Beyond America’s beloved cherry pie, cherries are a great addition to salads, cocktails and desserts.

Strawberries are here!

Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits to eat as is. I love them in salads, in sauces and desserts. June in North Central Texas can also give us blueberries, cucumbers, greens, mangos, fresh peas, red potatoes, and lots and lots of fresh herbs. So get out to your local farmers market and enjoy some of the season’s best produce!

Easy Strawberry Vinaigrette • 1/2 pound fresh strawberries • 2 tablespoon honey (or more to taste if your berries are not very sweet) • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Directions: 1. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. 2. Adjust honey to taste.

Green beans are easily overlooked. They go great with almonds, basil, butter, Parmesan, olive oil, onions, parsley, potatoes, shallots, tomatoes and vinegar.
