Bittersweet October The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter – Carol Bishop Hipps

October truly is the “perfect pause” with cool nights and mild days, leaves turning color, and wood smoke perfuming the air. It’s also the season for pumpkin!! Bakers all around town are offering pumpkin pies, cakes and breads. Even Starbucks rolls out their pumpkin spice latte. But my favorite pumpkin tradition is the Jack O’Lantern. People have been making Jack O’Lanterns for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack”. The legend goes: Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him but then, true to his name, Jack didn’t have money to pay so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin so Jack could pay the tab.

Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put the coin in his pocket next to a silver cross. The cross prevented the Devil from changing back to his original form. He eventually freed the Devil on the condition that he not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, the Devil would not claim his soul. The story goes on that Jack continued to fool the Devil trapping and releasing him several times throughout the years always asking for the same conditions upon his release until, one day, Jack died. Well, God was not about to allow such an unsavory character into heaven and the Devil, upset about the tricks Jack had played on him, stayed true to his promise not to claim his soul and would not let him into hell. Instead, he sent him out into the dark night with only a coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved out turnip and has been roaming the earth with it ever since. The Irish began to refer to the ghostly creature as “Jack of the Lantern” which eventually became, Jack O’Lantern. People in Ireland and Scotland began carving out turnips and potatoes and putting small candles inside. They would then place them in their windows

Immigrants brought the tradition with them to the United States and found that the pumpkin, native to America, was the perfect gourd to use for a Jack O’Lantern. Thus began a Halloween tradition. So, get out and celebrate the humble pumpkin this year at one of the many fall events held throughout our communities. From Granbury’s Harvest Moon Festival of the Arts, now in its 37th year, to Chandor Gardens annual family friendly, trick or treat event, Goblins in the Gardens, October abounds with opportunities to get your fill of eating, drinking, photographing and carving the gorgeous gourd. As someone once said, “there are four seasons: spring, summer, winter, and pumpkin!” Happy Pumpkin to you all,

October brings Thrills and Chills to the big screen! Get ready to be spooked out of your gourd this October. A record number seventeen horror, suspense, and good old fashioned slasher films will be out by Hallows Eve! Of course, there will also be the usual sprinkling of comedies, dramas, and thoughtprovoking documentaries as well… but don’t be fooled… this is the time of year for zombies, blood-curdling screams, and psychological torture. To start your haunted nightmare of a month off, we have A Christmas Horror Story coming out in limited theatres October 2nd. Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy, peace and goodwill. But for some folks in the small town of Bailey Downs, it turns into something much less festive. When Krampus - the antiSanta who punishes the naughty children - is summoned by a young boy, everyone’s fight for survival begins. The first week of the month also brings out the thriller films, Narcopolis, Shanghai, and Partisan. However, this week will also bring

a big draw due to Legend, a true story. The rise and fall of London’s most notorious gangsters, Reggie and Ron Kray, both portrayed by Tom Hardy in a double performance. Legend is a classic crime thriller taking us into the secret history of the 1960s and the extraordinary events that secured the infamy of the Kray twins. The Martian, starring Matt Damon is expected to bring the biggest draw of the week to the big screen. During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. The second and third weeks in October doesn’t let up with even more thrillers. Knock Knock, The Final Girls, Victoria, and Trash all promise to fill you with suspense and leave you sleepless. Pan, however, based on the children’s beloved fictional character Peter Pan, will have the smaller kids begging their parents to take them to the movies! Coming out nationwide, and in 3D no less, Pan is action adventure that follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter

Pan. Steve Jobs will also come out October 9th for the techie in all of us. Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter. Crimson Peak, The Diabolical, and Meadowland will nicely round out your psychological thrillers until just before Halloween, when the biggest, scariest movie of the season will come out nationwide. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension promises to bring the series to a shocking end this Halloween season. The film will follow supernatural occurrences that take place in a newly moved family’s home in Palo Alto, California. The family consists of four members including Ryan, a game developer, Ryan’s wife Emily, a stay-at-home mom described as “more serious than her young husband—she’s

constantly on the go, does yoga, and though loving, has an air of maturity about her”, their 6-year old daughter Leila, described as “a fearless, opinionated tomboy”, and Ryan’s younger brother described as a “less fit, less funky version of his brother”. The brothers find tapes of young Katie and Kristi being taught supernatural abilities by their grandmother. Despite the video being filmed 20 years ago, Katie breaks the fourth wall by noticing the brothers’ presence. They also find a camera which can see paranormal phenomena that the human eye can’t see. With Leila being targeted by supernatural forces, Ryan must find a way to protect his daughter before it is too late. So be sure to go scare yourself this October and remember to get your “boo!” on. Christmas is coming and that means Christmas music! “Mary Did You Know?” is one of the most loved and sought after modern day Christmas songs, ever. Mark Lowry, the co-writer of the beloved song is a songwriter, singer, storyteller, humorist, and author. Lowry attended Liberty University from 1975 to 1980. He planned to study business but a ‘spiritual calling’, lead him to music and after graduation, his agent, Roy Morgan, booked him in 43 cities in 41 days. In 1988, Mark was approached by Bill Gaither to be the baritone for the group. His antics on stage between sets quickly became legendary and led him to capitalize on his comedic talent. ““Those few seconds of “dead air” can feel like hours when you’re on stage facing a crowd – so, to fill time, I’d start talking about my life and my testimony. People would laugh… and I finally realized I was on to something.”” Mark claims his Hyperactivity Disorder is the reason his shows sell out so fast. He is a witty, high energy and fast paced comic. Lowry’s career with the Gaither Vocal Band spanned thirteen years during his first stint with the group. In October 2013, Mark Lowry left the group to devote more time to his solo career. His career is solid. His albums, Mouth In Motion, The Last Word, and Remotely Controlled are certified Gold (more than 50,000 units sold). Mark Lowry On Broadway was certified Gold quickly after its release and later certified Platinum www.myhometownstexas.com

(more than 100,000 units sold). The Christmas hit “Mary Did You Know?”, cowritten with Buddy Greene, has been recorded over 400 times by varying artists like, Reba McIntire and Cee Lo Green. His last comic video, titled Mark Lowry Goes To Hollywood was released on September 12, 2005, but you can still view lots of his comedic energy and timing on www.godtube.com. Mark has joked that all of his videos have gone “aluminum”. Mark maintains a full schedule of solo concerts with special friends such as Quest Quartet. They will be performing with him in Weatherford, Texas at The Texas Opry Theater for 3 shows on Friday, October 16th at 7:30pm and Saturday, October 17th at 1:00pm and 6:00pm. HARVEST MOON FESTIVAL of the ARTS & Balloon Dayz

This year’s festival marks the 37th year for the popular event and the HGMA along with the Granbury Arts Alliance will be taking the event back to its original format of showcasing contemporary craft and fine arts. In addition to food vendors, local entertainment, and seasonal activities, the second annual Hot Air Balloon Event will be held at the Granbury Regional Airport once again. The family friendly arts event will be held on the paved area around the charming downtown square in the heart of the historic shopping district on Saturday October 17 from 9a.m. to 6p.m. and on Sunday, October 18 from 10 a.m. to 5p.m.

For almost 40 years the Historic Granbury Merchants Association has celebrated the fall, adorned the famous courthouse square, and invited local folks as well as the entire Dallas/Fort Worth area to the Harvest Moon Festival of the Arts.

The juried arts festival had winners in a myriad of art forms in 2014. Best in Show went to Larry East for his clay works, Cort Anderson for photography, Linda and Daniel Baker for jewelry, Clint Brewer for photography, Cynthia Ross for glass and many more skilled artist and crafts people. This year promises to showcase even more unique and beautiful art forms that are bound to catch the eye of festival patrons.

In 2014 the HGMA in conjunction with the City of Granbury and the Granbury Arts Alliance kicked off the festival in BIG fashion with the first ever Balloons in Granbury (BIG) event. Balloons launched just before dawn and glowed at dusk. In between, visitors enjoyed a high-caliber arts festival set against the backdrop of Texas’ most historic courthouse. As one excited festival goer declared, “the Harvest Moon Festival in Granbury = spectacular! People were waiting in anticipation.”

During the festival, Preserve Granbury will be on hand with samples of the artifacts and antiques discovered during the renovation of the President’s House. The treasures will be there to view or you could even go home with one if you’re lucky! In addition, they will be offering the special edition of Mary Saltarelli’s, “Historic Hood County: An Illustrated History.” History buffs won’t want to miss the opportunity to own a copy of this very special book.

Activities Health = Fitness + You + Nutrition (FUN) Better Brain Health Are you concerned about maintaining the health of your brain as you age? You’re not alone. Losing one’s memory and mental abilities to cognitive decline is something we all fear, and the current statistics on the prevalence of cognitive decline in this country are not pretty. By age 65, sadly 1 in 8 Americans will suffer from severe cognitive decline, and by age 80, an astonishing 1 in 2 will. There are a number of natural brain protectors out there, but did you know that one herb has shown more promise when it comes to supporting your neurological system than any other medical finding to date? It’s a scientific fact that curcumin, an antioxidant compound found in the root of the turmeric plant, is one of the most powerful natural brain protecting substances on the planet! It continues to amaze scientists with its remarkable cognitive health benefits. You may be familiar with turmeric as the bright yellow spice that is commonly found in curry powder. Turmeric has a long history as a healing herb and culinary spice in India. Interestingly, India has the highest per capita consumption of turmeric AND the lowest incidence of cognitive decline worldwide!

The hallmark process associated with certain types of cognitive decline is the formation in the brain of abnormal protein structures. Normally when malformed proteins are formed with the brain, the immune system sends out cells known as macrophages, which engulf and destroy the proteins. If this ordinary function fails, defective proteins accumulate in the brain and cognitive decline can follow. You may have heard about the dangers of “silent” chronic inflammation. It’s been discussed by Dr. Oz and have made headlines in publications such as Newsweek and Time. It’s important for you to know that low-grade inflammation is rapidly becoming recognized as the root cause of the development of cognitive decline, as well as a wide range of serious health problems. Unfortunately, most people don’t do anything until the initial

Activities symptoms, such as muscle aches and joint discomfort, appear. When this happens, their gut reaction often is to go see a doctor, who is unlikely to correctly diagnose the problem, and more than likely will prescribe drugs that are far from safe and only provide short-term benefits. But the initial symptoms of pain are just the beginning. If left unchecked, chronic inflammation can damage your body in many ways. One of the worst examples of this is cognitive decline, which can ravage your memory and severely impact your quality of life in what should be your golden years. Cutting-edge science is showing that curcumin is one of the most powerful, natural anti-inflammatories ever studied. Curcumin is so effective because it is a potent inhibitor of the body’s most powerful inflammationcausing chemical, called Nf-kappa Beta. Miraculously, curcumin has been shown in numerous studies to tame joint pain and muscle soreness, protect the brain, support cardiovascular health, bolster immunity and more. If you have a lingering health problem that no doctor can resolve, you may be suffering from chronic inflammation and curcumin may be just the natural solution you’ve been looking for.

Shopping with picnic baskets, banners, games, koozies, t-shirts and more. Doug has a tailgate special on caps of 20% off for the month of October. If you’re not a sports enthusiast, then you will want to check out his collections of Corvettes and Mustangs, and Army, Navy and Marines T-shirts.

Let’s begin our what’s new for fall with what’s new for the guys at Doug’s Sports House. Doug

just received a shipment of seasonal boxers and sleepwear in a variety of designs, like baseball, the US flag and camouflage. He has new NFL t-shirts available in most franchises, and you can get lots of Dallas Cowboy stuff as well. The hot commodity right now is the Texas Rangers who are in first place. You can purchase the latest ‘V’ design t-shirt with it’s tie-dye color scheme and Rangers logo. If tailgating is your thing, you can support your favorite team

He has traveled and worked all over the world, including NY, Paris, London, Denver and Santa Fe. He’s worked with some big names like Sak’s and Marshall Fields. I personally like the newest trend for fall, the reversible all weather coat. The designs are such that you could wear this coat in the rain or to a dinner party. Stylish and comfortable, they will be one of the biggest hits of the season. Exclusive to Stephens is the Chenille gloves (one size fits most) trimmed in fox or mink with a touch of Texas bling. There are lots of brand names www.myhometownstexas.com

like Rockmount Ranch wear, Cattle Las, accessories, antiques and novelties like branding irons and Kentucky Cheroots Cigars. Just a hint, Stephen will be designing something very special for Granbury during the season of giving. Spellbound is all a buzz, as they took over the space located a couple doors down from their current store. Tammy has already begun stocking the store with Corral boots and some beautiful leather western wear. She will include new and stylish apparel such as the Up Pant by Ultimate Pants, and the Scully brand of clothing. My favorite is a line called Face Plant that manufactures bamboo sleepwear and casual wear that feels like you are wearing a cloud. Waxing Poetic is another line of jewelry with sterling, brass and Swarovski charms that can be fitted onto a necklace or bracelet, a truly personal item you can add to year after year. For the upcoming holidays you can count on Spellbound’s extended hours, everyday policy of free gift wrapping and free shipping (from their online store www.shopspellbound.com). By: Marie Valden

SHOPPING

The leaves have begun to change, cold fronts have brought us out of triple digits, school has begun and there is Pumpkin Spice Latte. Autumn is upon us with only 13 Fridays until Christmas. My apologies but someone had to do it. Soon, it will be all about the shopping and there is no place better than the Granbury Square to find that one of a kind treasure.

Stephen’s of Granbury is new to the Square, but by the 200+ people that turned out at his grand opening on September 18th, he has begun with a bang and even donated 10% of sales to Mission Granbury. Stephen is a master furrier and designer of both men and women’s designs, which also means he can repair or restyle any fur.
