The
theory of the origin of April Fools Day goes like this: In 1564 France reformed its calendar, moving the start of the year from the end of March to January 1. Those who failed to keep up with the change and stubbornly clung to the old calendar system, continuing to celebrate the New Year during the week that fell between March 24th and April 1st, had jokes played on them. Pranksters would surreptitiously stick paper fish to their backs. The victims of the prank were thus called Poisson d’Avril, or April Fish – which, to this day, remains the French term for April Fools – and so the tradition was born. Over the years I’m sure many of you have been either the perpetrator or the victim of an April Fools prank; sometimes a little mean but most of the time just silly. When someone yells “April Fools” in your face you feel a bit ashamed that you would fall prey to something like that – in fact, you feel a fool. I would like to go on the record and say yes, I am an April fool and proud of it. I am a fool for the very sound of the word “April” bringing with it all the loveliness of the spring season. I’m a fool for the feel of April with it’s warm
breezes that speak of picnics and walks in the park; the smell of the blossom scented air that surrounds you only in April; the cool rain that coaxes seedlings from the earth and helps them to grow into the succulent tomatoes I will enjoy so much in the summer. In case you haven’t figured it out by now…I think April is the Bomb!! Here, in our neck of the woods, we celebrate April with a myriad of special events and festivals heralding the arrival of spring. Saturday, April 2nd is the date for Chandor Gardens Annual Spring Fling. This popular event draws visitors and vendors from all over Texas. Artists and artisans will be set up throughout the Gardens displaying and selling their paintings, textiles, jewelry, soaps and lotions, handmade wind chimes, signs and much more. Kids will enjoy JJ the Clown with his balloon animals and face painting and the “Ask a Master Gardener” booth will be on site to answer all your gardening questions. Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day and area musicians will also be on hand to entertain. Best of all – it’s only $1 per person admission!
The Annual Granbury Wine Walk takes place Friday, April 29th and Saturday, April 30th around the historic downtown Granbury square. Wine Walk visitors will have the chance to taste wine from as many as twenty different Texas wineries while listening to live local music, sampling delicious food, and looking at stunning art work. The two day event will benefit local nonprofit organizations and provide educational fellowships and scholarships. Thursday, April 28th is the Granbury Wine Walk VIP Event “Sip & Savor” that includes an evening of hors d’oeuvres, prepared by North Texas’ most talented chefs, art, and live jazz. Check out the article in this month’s magazine for details on the events and ticket information. There is a proverb that says, “He who is born a fool is never cured”. Well, my friends, I plan to never seek treatment for being an April fool…in fact, I’m hoping it’s contagious!

APRIL REFRESHES AUDIENCES WITH LAUGHTER Spring is definitely in the air as April rushes in a new and exciting month of laughter, comedy, and romance. Animation and fairy tale adventures also make it a great month for family time at the theatre. So feel free to leave your winter coat hanging in the closet and opt instead for some lighter and carefree cinemascope! This month’s refreshing movie viewing is as welcome as the warmer breeze heading our way. Melissa McCarthy will headline the month with The Boss – a comedy coming out nationwide April 8th. McCarthy stars as a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she’s
caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. Also opening April 8th is Mr. Right. Hyperactive at the best of times, Martha (Anna Kendrick) has gone full-on manic since her latest breakup. She babbles, parties like a monster, cooks everything in sight — and is looking to do something terrible when she meets Francis (Sam Rockwell). To anyone else, Francis’s approach would come across as creepy, but Martha can’t help but be intrigued. They seem a perfect match: she’s bananas, he’s bananas... except he’s a deadly sort of bananas. He’s a professional assassin. April 15th will be a big draw with two popular films slated for release the same day. First up is The Jungle Book. The Jungle Book is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who
bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. The second film is Barbershop: The Next Cut. It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. Calvin (Ice Cube) and his longtime crew, including Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), are still there, but the shop has undergone some major changes. Most noticeably, our once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. The ladies bring their own flavor, drama and gossip to the shop challenging the fellas at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie within the shop, the surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, forcing Calvin and our crew to come together to not only save the shop, but their neighborhood. The Huntsman: Winters War will be
opening nationwide April 22nd and expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love. Okay, so if slapstick comedies or animation is not your cup of tea, there are oddly a number of thriller, horror, and dark comedy films up at bat this month. Why April? Why not I guess. Usually the darker stuff is reserved for fall and winter months, however the genre has proven to be a huge money maker any time of year. My bet for the biggest thriller of April is Before I Wake, starring Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane. The trailer alone for it is nerve-wracking! FUN FACT: Did you know that funny gal Melissa McCarthy and Jenny McCarthy are first cousins and that before she took her place in front of camera she worked as a production coordinator for “The Weird Al Show.” Who knew, right?! Art Mike was born and raised in Oklahoma. When he was very young, his mother would buy him coloring books and he would draw the pictures instead of coloring them. During that time of drawing, he was unwittingly developing a talent he would utilize his entire life. In school, there are lots of opportunities to draw, color, paste and work in different mediums, but Mike did not receive any formal training in art. He moved to Texas with his family, when he was 16 years old. A neighbor of Mike’s once hired a man to do a painting of wild horses on a snowy background, in a Bev Doolittle style, onto a large 2-man “A professional (insert anything) is an amateur who didn’t quit.” Richard Bach. What makes you a professional? Some say it’s the moment you are paid for your work and others say it’s when you get recognized. Mike Reed believes it’s when an artist becomes ‘established’. For him that means when he becomes ‘represented by a gallery’ and when he is able to make a living through his art. If you have ever viewed Mike’s art you would know that time is near. Check out his Facebook page. (Mike Reed Granbury)
crosscut saw. The man started the work and then walked away. The woman, anxious to get the job finished, asked Mike to complete the work. He reluctantly agreed to give it a go. Mike is a self-proclaimed Obsessive Compulsive when it comes to his work. Every detail has to be exact or he starts over. He would paint some, trying to match the style and technique of the other artist, and finally through enormous efforts, trial and error, he successfully completed the work to the woman’s delight. He matched someone else’s style and technique that he had never been taught, like the pianist who can play by ear. He can sketch in pencil or charcoal, and has worked in carbon acrylics, oil, airbrushing and even wood burning, known as pyrography.
It wasn’t until Mike was 31, that he felt he could look at his art more seriously. He likes the photorealistic works of Dru Blair, whose airbrushed portraits look more like photographs. Steve Hanks is another favorite of Mike’s, in part because he paints realism with watercolors. Mike is a detail person and that can be seen in his colored pencil work of Josh Hamilton, which he did for his sister. He lives in Granbury and works full-time with Snodgrass Paint and Remodeling. He also makes signs for businesses. When I asked if there were any works he would not wish to part with, he said he wished he had gotten a picture of the Harley he once painted with an ‘Underworld’ scene, complete with Kate Beckinsale and a Liken in the full moon. He says with all the styles he is learning, he is just beginning to find his own style. He prefers to paint with oils and likes to paint photorealism with a touch of impressionism. Recently, Stacey Watkins Martin asked him to do a painting or two for her studio/gallery on the square, Your Private Collection. His dream is to create a following of people who enjoy his art. Yet, his heart’s desire is for his works to reach the very heart of those who view it in the same way he views other artists’ works, with pure joy. Mike told me, “When the learning stops, the ego kicks in. No ego, only learning.” By: Marie Valden

Moe’s long string of hits include “Bandy The Rodeo Clown”, “Hank Williams, You Wrote My Life”, “Till I’m Too Old To Die young”, “Americana”, “It’s A Cheatin’ Situation”, “Just good Ol’ Boys”, “Barstool Mountain”, “I Cheated Me Right Out of You”, “I Just
Started Hatin’ Cheatin’ Songs Today”, “Rodeo Romeo”, “You Haven’t Heard the Last of Me”, “Holding The Bag” And dozens of other chart-toppers. Whether writing, recording new songs or travelling the world performing. Moe keeps one of the busiest schedules in show business. Some of his noteworthy accomplishments are: 10 # 1 Hits, 40 Top Ten Hits, 66 Chart Hits, 5 Gold Albums, ACM Song of The Year, ACM most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year, American Video of the year, ACM and CMA Duet of the Year. Country music legend Moe Bandy has come a long way from his bull riding days in Texas. Not to mention his years as a sheet metal worker by day and playing Honkey Tonks at night in and around his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. In the mid-seventies when the country pop Kenny Rogers, John Denver and the outlaw sound of Waylon and Willie was at the rage, along came the traditionalist Moe Bandy. The Texas singer with twin fiddles and steel guitar in the band kept Texas-style Honkey Tonk music alive, but it wasn’t easy. In 1972 Moe met record producer Ray Baker on a hunting trip and convinced him to listen to some demo tapes he had made. Baker agreed to produce Moe if he was willing

to pay for recording session. Moe agreed and out of that session came Moe’s first hit song “I just Started Hatin Cheatin’ Songs Today”. GRC records picked up the song and released it nationally where it became a top 20 hit and that was just the beginning. Moe followed up with “It Was Always So Easy (To Find An Unhappy Woman)” and his first #1 hit “Bandy The Rodeo Clown”. His songs never strayed far from the traditionally Honky Tonk fare. Loving, cheating, drinking and patriotic songs formed the core of his music. Moe continues to perform to packed houses all over the world. More than anything else Moe loves to perform for his countless fans. Be sure to check out Moe’s

Are you noticing a rise in “gluten sensitivity” in your circle of friends and family? If so, have they tried to eat gluten overseas? Final question: Why do you think this rise is happening?
Ken H. wrote…
1- gluten sensitivity is on the rise and I know people who are gluten intolerant 2- I don’t know if any of them have tried it in Europe 3- as I have read a lot about it - a book called Wheat Belly is one of the best - it is because our grain is no longer the “staff of life” it used to be - it has been bred and re-bred to make it easier to harvest and it is not in any way like the original wheat ... the “waves of grain” in the national anthem.
Constantino F. wrote…
I was born and raised in Mexico, moved here to the States 17+ years ago, mostly living in NY, NJ and now MD (actually in Columbia, though work in Baltimore); somehow since about 6 years ago started to develop some allergy, after reading information about grains, gluten and trial-error found was gluten, changed my diet, though if I eat Ezekiel bread am fine, or gluten free or when I go to Mexico to visit family I can eat any bread or cereals with no problems. Actually goes beyond that, but my body acts very different when I eat same things in same portions here (US) than in Mexico. Why? I think may be the seeds use for growing grains use for people or animal consumption. Anecdotally, my brother who has been living same time, different regions in the US, feels very similar when eating here and in Mexico. Go figure.
Yes, I have ‘heard’ from more people now than ever that have gluten sensitivity. My logic tells me that it’s not the gluten but rather the glyphosate that is used on the wheat, which may be why people don’t have that problem overseas... I think the EU (Germany) recently banned it. What have you heard? It’s frightening and maddening that we’ve all been a bunch of guinea pigs.
Janet J. writes…
Got your latest column on gluten and had to pass along some info. I can tell you exactly why people are having more issues with gluten containing grains. You see, it just isn’t about the grain itself but the fact that they spray it with Monsanto roundup (i.e. glyphosate) before harvest to make the stalks wither. It is the pesticides people are reacting to as much as it can be the grain itself. Pass the word on about all of this. Let’s help people with this. I buy organic grains now that I learned all of this. I am not sensitive to gluten but I can sure tell when a pesticide is on something. I get my organic unbleached wheat flour here. They have awesome flours that you can put in a bread maker and make your own bread at Great River Organic Milling and they are very accessible via phone. I have called them and they can answer any question you might have on their products. Julian’s bakery has a great selection of gluten free breads that your readers can enjoy if they don’t want to make their own breads. Some people find that they can eat a form of ancient wheat called Einkorn. It was resurrected in Italy by Carla Bartolucci who created theJovial Food brand of cookies and pasta. There’s a podcast about it at Carla Bartolucci – Einkorn Wheat May Just Be the Answer for Those Who Are Gluten -Wheat Sensitive – August 20, 2015

I’m a 69 yr. young female, and took myself off of gluten three years ago. It helped me a lot at the time. It’s hard, and I imagine not 100% accurate, to be tested for anything gluten related, if you’ve been off of it for so long. I have been strict about not touching gluten, UNTIL we went to Europe. We went to a winery, and they had a pretzel making demo. I declined at first, but then decided because Europe does NOT allow GMO’s, and because I had no plans that evening, that I would have a giant pretzel that I used to enjoy so much. I ate the whole thing without any problems. I believe WE’RE DOING IT TO OURSELVES!! As time goes on, I’m experiencing many other internal issues, digestion and colon related. I pray that answers will be found. In the past I had no allergies or digestion issues, and could eat and love anything. Now anything food related makes me miserable. Thank you for the vent time. It seems that the almighty dollar has won too many rounds!
PASTA ETC., ALONG WITH THE OTHER COMMONLY CONSUMED GRAINS • ALL SUGAR. • ALL DAIRY PRODUCTS OTHER THAN THOSE FROM GRASS RAISED, NONHORMONE, NON- ANTIBIOTIC TREATED COWS THAT HAVE NOT BETWEEN FED ON PASTURES FERTILIZED WITH ARTIFICIAL CHEMICALS AND MOST DEFINITELY NOT FROM CAFO OPERATIONS. UNLESS NON PASTEURIZED, NON HOMOGENIZED, ALL DAIRY PRODUCTS ARE ALSO POISON TO THE BODY. The highest incidence of bone disease and related health issues in the world are in North America where you find the highest consumption of dairy products. The calcium in cow’s milk actually robs calcium from the bone structure when being processed by the metabolism. There is more, but the 3 above are the most important and will make the greatest difference to the victims of modern food production.

The jury is NOT out on this: Wheat and its common cousins are POISON - gluten is just the scapegoat. The usual grains (wheat, oats, barley, rye) have been screwed up so much since before WWII that they should not be put in the marketplace OR in a body. Period. THEY ARE ALL GMO. And they have less than 2% protein, the rest is just starch and gluten which are high among the major causes of diabetes, leaky gut, IBS, obesity and a host of seemingly related allergies - it all converts to sugar once consumed. See the book ‘Wheat Belly’ for a glimpse of the consequences of ignoring the facts. If people want to improve their health without major hassles, do the following 3 simple things: Eliminate (TOTALLY) • ALL WHEAT AND DERIVATIVES (PASTRIES, COOKIES, BREADS,

Shopping is to hire and train a full working staff, including her own replacement as CEO who can continue to operate in a mindful and charismatic way to bring Granbury and all it has to offer to the attention of the rest of the world.
Shopping, Tourism, Lake Living, Dining, Outdoor Recreation, Festivals, Weddings... OH MY!
SHOPPING
When you live and work in a lake community, it is natural to take some of its resources for granted. But, Granbury is a thriving city with vast opportunities available in tourism, shopping, dining, lake living, outdoor recreation, festivals, weddings and more. It can be daunting for those who live here to truly convey the uniqueness of the Granbury experience, so city officials decided to bring in a pro, Teresa Anderson. Teresa Anderson, founder of Teresa Anderson & Associates, worked for more than 20 years with other DMO’s across the country, from Hilton Head to Newport Beach, before she began consulting on her own. DMO stands for Destination Management Organization and is the coordinated management of all the elements that make up a destination, i.e. attractions, access, marketing, human resources, image and pricing. It takes a strategic approach to link-up separate entities, like tourism, branding, experience development, and marketing, for the better management of the destinatio. The first move was to separate Visit Granbury from the city, and make it a 501(c)(6). That differs from a 501(c)(3) in that its goal is to focus on business development rather than philanthropic. The end goal for Teresa

Right now, she lives on the square, so she gets a real feel for all the area has to offer. Visit Granbury has an office located in the visitor center inside the town hall. That will change in the fall as Teresa is actively looking for the best location to house Visit Granbury. In the meantime, she has her work cut out for her. Along with hiring staff, she is in the process of producing a new visitor’s guide and revamping the online site, originally produced by the city, to include several new sections like weddings, and more. I was surprised to learn that Teresa is married and has a home in Indiana. Teresa will live in Granbury for one year while she re-organizes and then re-launches Visit Granbury. She and her husband are in similar occupations and since they are empty nesters, they have the freedom to travel and to spend quality time really getting to know a place. She told me that this is her first time to Texas and that she really likes working with the people here in Granbury. What Teresa loves most is the challenge of organization, the triage and the setting of priorities when she enters a new project. She has a talent for knowing who to hire to get the job done right, and knowing who the movers and shakers are, whether it be in advocacy, budgeting, planning, staff needs, and/or community relations. She is a definitive asset to the community with her focus and dedication to bringing attention to the uniqueness that is Granbury. Her call to action is simple. She speaks at various meetings such as Rotary, Kiwanis and others to spread the word about what Granbury has to offer, so if you know someone or are interested, go to the website and sign up for the newsletter.
