My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine - 3
Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
It’s August in Texas – Find a Spot to Chill Out! Well, folks, it’s that time of year again. To call this season “dog days” doesn’t do it justice. It’s just plain hot and the only thing to do is to find someplace cool to hang out until the weather changes. With that in mind, here are a few of the best spring fed swimming holes all located within a short drive of where you live! Unk’s Lake campground and swimming hold in Perrin is a veritable oasis of pleasure on a hot summer day. If you enjoy swimming at a lake you will absolutely love Unk’s lake. Its spring fed, wonderfully cold water is 22’ in the middle with a bottom of sand and rock. The spring is diverted each winter and the bottom is cleaned before the start of each season. Because it’s chlorinated, there aren’t any fish, turtles or other critters in the water to surprise swimmers. There are plenty of picnic tables under the trees and near the water with grills for cooking out and a large sandy beach for the kids to play in. Floats and tubes are welcome and they also have a huge, inflated “blob” that your kids, and you, will love jumping on and being launched out into the lake. Bring a life-vest if you want to jump on the “blob” and visit Unk’s Lake for a fun family outing. Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose has a “blue hole” swimming section at the first dinosaur track viewing sight and a shallow river with a raised bed and visible tracks at the second viewing sight. The water is clear and cold and you can wade up and down the shallow Paluxy River searching for tracks and staying cool all at the same time. The river bottom is gravel or smooth stone so bring
along your swim shoes or waterproof sandals and walk in the footsteps of an Acrocanthosaurus this summer! Just west of Austin in Spicewood, is possibly the most beautiful swimming hole in the state. Situated on a bluff overlooking Cypress Creek, Krause Springs is lined with towering cypress trees and has a waterfall coming over a cliff covered with ferns. Elton and Jane Krause bought the property in the 1950s and each year Elton, his sons, and hired help find more improvements to add to the privately owned park. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was probably used by Native Americans for centuries before white settlers arrived. There are 32 springs throughout the campground, two of which feed the 70’ x 20’ swimming hole at a rate of 70 gallons a minute at a temperature of about 70 degrees. There are 24 sites for recreational vehicles and a tent camping area in a meadow above the creek with loads of shade trees. Krause Springs is open for swimming during the summer months from 9a.m. till dusk. Fort Worth’s Burger’s Lake offers loads of summer fun at the 30-acre park that features a one-acre spring-fed lake for swimming. Two sandy beaches with big shade trees, over 300 picnic tables, 6 diving boards, a 20-foot slide and a 25foot trapeze have made Burger’s Lake the go-to place for summer fun in Fort Worth for generations. All in all, our state boasts over 30 swimming holes open to the public to float, swim, swing and bounce in all summer long. Explore a few with your family this year and chill out Texas style!

Period Pieces, Thrillers, and 3D reign in August Nothing beats the heat in August better than a cool, darkened theater and some interesting flicks to lead you in to another world and leave the scorching temperatures behind! With some pretty incredible films in the queue, it will not take much to tempt you to get out this late summer season and enjoy your local theater. August is such a great month in many ways for film and television.
In film, August is usually the “anything goes” month that will display a wide variety of genres and themes. It is typically this way because August is also among the poorest rated times of the year at the box office. Therefore, movie studios try to “mix-it-up” and really diversify the types of films coming out. Which, of course, is fantastic. Television enjoys August because it is the end of hiatus on regular shows and people can finally catch up on the last season of their favorite before it starts up again. Any way you look at it, August definitely has its perks and we are eager to take advantage! Coming out nationwide in 3D on August Friday, August 5th is a Suicide Squad. A mix of wellknown and unknown villains (Deadshot, King Shark, Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn) are recruited by the government to accomplish a task deemed too dangerous for superheroes.
The historically independent operators must bury their own interpersonal conflicts and agendas to form a cohesive unit to take on a singular task. This film features everything one would expect- action, adventure, and of course, superhero’s! Opening the same day, Nine Lives is a comedy that can be enjoyed with the entire family. The story of a stuffy businessman, Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey), who finds himself trapped inside the body of his family’s cat. If any hope exists of returning to his family as the husband and father they deserve, Tom will have to learn why he has been placed in this peculiar situation and the great lengths he must go to earn back his human existence.
girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. August 19th takes us back to an absolute Hollywood classic. Ben-Hur. In this epic drama, Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption. FUN FACT: Kevin Spacey’s brother is a Rod Stewart impersonator, and generally asks for $100 per night for his performances. Hmmm. Jimmy Ray Sorrells
A fantastic film sure to be a huge hit with kids of all ages is Pete’s Dragon. Opening nationwide and in 3D on August 12th. For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales… until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old

Activities Activities Brown retired in 2008, but his wife could tell he was not done just yet. She would later suggest he pursue the Fossil Rim opportunity. “We have a house on Lake Granbury near several other Fossil Rim employees,” Brown said. “This has been my first full-time job since retirement, and it’s a wonderful opportunity that I really enjoy. I love the challenges and have a great bunch of people to work with, so it’s been very rewarding.” My cooks are very skilled and they consistently produce quality cuisine. My lodge associates put forth a great effort to meet all guests’ needs.”
[
Brown strives to boost Fossil Rim lodging enjoyment The quality of experience for a Fossil Rim Wildlife Center overnight guest has been on the rise ever since Bill Brown took the helm as lodging manager in April 2016. He recalls an array of adventures that led up to this point. “I started in lodging by purchasing a ski lodge in Winter Park, Colorado with a partner,” Brown said. “After nine months, I sold my portion to him and bought another property for myself in Winter Park. I ran that one for 23 years. During my time in Winter Park, I owned and managed WoodSpur Ski Lodge, Winter Haven Ski Lodge, Adolpf’s Saloon and Timing Shack Lounge.” The hospitality field actually caught Brown’s attention years earlier. “After I got out of college and (military) service, I jokingly told my granddad I wanted to go on vacation,” Bill said. “He said that’s the profession I should go into.” Sometime later, while managing a condo resort in Red River, New Mexico, Brown met his current wife, Cricket. They remained in New Mexico, as Brown went on to manage the 120,000-acre East Moreno Ranch.
“It was a working ranch that was converted into a dude ranch that people from the city would visit,” he said. “We built a pro rodeo arena, an 18-hole golf course, offered trophy elk hunting and fishing, plus Cowboy Evening Dinners with famous musicians entertaining.” These previous experiences prepared Brown for what he would see and learn during his time working for the United States Department of Defense. “I met people from the Pentagon who came for the grand opening ceremonies of the 400-room military lodge at Fort Bragg Army Base in North Carolina,” Brown said. “They told me the Navy was looking for someone with my skillset. Six months later, I was hired to manage the navy lodging at bases throughout North America, Europe, Puerto Rico and Cuba. It was a great opportunity to learn and travel.”

Activities downstairs – Egret and Hummingbird – share a bath,” he said. “That works out well for large families. We have two rooms on the second floor – Parrot and Attwater – with king beds. The Parrot has a Jacuzzi. “The Peregrine is on the third floor and also has a Jacuzzi. It’s the romantic room. We’ve had several anniversaries celebrated in The Lodge, and I think it’s a good venue for a variety of different events.”
The original “ranch house” for the property, The Lodge is now a five-room bed and breakfast. “Location, location, location,” Brown said when asked about its selling points. “It’s priced right, you get a full breakfast, a free Scenic Wildlife
There are plenty of ways to relax at The Lodge. “We have a game room with a TV,” Brown said. “Our ‘Great Room’ also has a TV, plus it’s a huge room with a kitchen and dining room that we utilize for parties. Every room except the Peregrine has a nice patio area where people can sit and watch the exotic and native animals.” Speaking of animals, species that can be seen from The Lodge include addax, sable, gemsbok, waterbuck, deer and wild turkeys.
When making decisions, Brown tries to adopt the customer perspective. “I know that customers seek value,” he said. Each lodge room is named after a different bird: Peregrine, Parrot, Attwater, Egret and Hummingbird. “The two rooms
For a different overnight experience, Fossil Rim has seven Foothills Safari Cabins. “The cabins are well-received by families,” Brown said. “There

morning. Guests of either facility can bring their own alcohol, and dinner can be provided. We serve dinner Friday and Saturday nights by reservation only,” Brown said. “Request a menu while making your reservations.”
All the same animals from The Lodge can be seen from the cabins, as well as greater sandhill cranes. Good food is a part of nearly any quality lodging experience, and the Fossil Rim facilities are no different. “Just like clean towels and sheets, air conditioning and heat, food is very important,” Brown said. “Hot and tasty with a good presentation – you’ve got to deliver a quality product.”
Brown highly recommends stargazing on a clear night from either location. “The Lodge and the Foothills Safari Cabins are quite different, but both allow you to get a safari experience without spending thousands of dollars,” Brown said. “This is also a great venue for small group events.”
Breakfast is served every morning for guests from The Lodge and the cabins inside the glass-walled pavilion at Foothills Safari Camp. “In the morning, we have a full breakfast buffet,” Brown said. “Guests who have scheduled a morning safari tour are picked up directly from the camp after

SHOPPING
oxanne Knapp, Owner and Shay Clark, partner, at ReUnique Boutique are busy daily creating a shopping experience like no other. Celebrating almost two years in their current location, their store looks like a home not a resale shop. But, that is what they do. ReUnique Boutique is an upscale consignment and resale shop for good quality, low priced specialty items in furniture and décor. Every day something unique and wonderful comes in. They work diligently and with a decorator’s eye to showcase those new items. If you are looking for a rare gem for your home or office, you would want to make it a point to come in several times a week so you do not miss that opportunity as the inventory changes almost daily.
In-store versus online shopping. That was the question; the answer is simple, out-of-the-box ideas. When you come to ReUnique Boutique you get years of experience with a personal touch and good interior advice. You don’t get personal with an online purchase. These ladies can answer any question you may have about putting it all together in your home. They are very close to the community of Granbury in Acton. ReUnique organized the event, “All Things Acton” in the Acton Crossroads Shopping Center, along with over 20 other vendors. Shay Clark said in an article for Hood County Free Press that the event received positive feedback from the people of Granbury and they are looking forward to offering this great event again, in the near future.
