The Autumn Leaves Us Breathless! While we were swimming and playing in the hot sun during summer vacation, the trees on the streets, in the parks, and in the forests were working hard to keep us cool and comfortable. Now its autumn, and we were ready -- okay, almost ready -- to be back in school or back to carpooling, dance lessons, football practice, etc. Those hardworking trees, on the other hand, need to take a break from all that photosynthesizing. When leaves change color from green to yellow, bright orange, or red, we know that trees are beginning their long winter’s rest.

For most of us, a return to autumn means anything but a rest. With the holidays fast approaching and the prospect of friends and family visiting, most people are busy preparing their homes and doing all the many tasks associated with the approaching winter season. Cleaning gutters, trimming trees, wrapping pipes…all while making grocery lists for Thanksgiving and addressing Holiday cards…it’s enough to make you want to stay in bed and sleep along with the trees!

You could even get your boots shined or milk a cow! For a list of all the fabulous things to do this fall and winter check out our activities pages and the calendar of events. Who needs rest anyway? firmly in all that is Hollywood! I certainly have an inside track to many celebrities, insights from behind the scenes (current and past films), and naturally an overwhelming abundance of personal stories just waiting to be told.
Our intrepid film buff is under the weather this month so we thought we’d take the opportunity to reintroduce him to those of you who weren’t fortunate enough to read his original bio. So, here it is, in all it’s glory!! Get well soon buddy! Hello fellow film and entertainment lovers, both novice and professional, young and old alike! Welcome to a fun place, here in this great publication, where we can journey together in all things Hollywood. I am so excited and grateful to be able to share with you my passion for film, television, and the arts. Please join me here every month for the latest and greatest escapes that tinsel town has to offer us, as I delve into the world of film and entertainment. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jimmy Ray Sorrells. I have spent fourteen years toiling away in the film industry (19982012) working in production and post-production, on-location and in-house (studio) projects. I worked directly on large budget, big studio films all over the U.S. and Canada. I held numerous positions in various films from the lowly file clerk to the department head and everything in between. My knowledge in film production is vast and varied, and my interest is ever-growing. Though I am no longer professionally employed in the film industry, my contacts (and big nose) keep me planted
Originally from Dublin, TX and having attended Weatherford College in my younger days, I feel truly back at home in this area. As much as I loved and will always miss my life on the road as a gypsy in filmmaking, I am even happier with my decision to be back in Texas and close to family and friends. Growing up one might guess I had an inclination to show business and movies, right? Well, not really. No more than the average kid who would daydream of being the real Karate Kid or possibly being Elliot and best friends with E.T..At most, I would have wanted to have the ability of the young Drew Barrymore in “Firestarter” to keep pesky older brothers at bay…but beyond that, I had no interest or desire to learn filmmaking or what it was like for those that do. My professional introduction into movies is quite a story itself. In 1997, I moved from Weatherford to San Angelo to attend Angelo State University. I took a semester off to work and save money before hitting the books again. (Atypical 20’s move, right?) I quickly landed a full-time job at a Holiday Inn working as both a night bell-boy and at the front desk. One late evening, I checked in a group of people who were scouting the area for film locations on a movie that was shooting in Dallas. Over the next two weeks, I got to know and hang out with several of the crew members while they socialized and I asked every question in the book about their jobs. My gift of gab back then was well-documented I can tell you.
www.myhometownstexas.com
Upon their departure, I was assured we would keep in touch and was told if an entry-level position ever opened up, I would get a call. Oh sure, I thought. A million dollars will also fall from the sky and hit me in the head. Then low and behold – the call! After some excited school girl screams and more than a few high-five’s all the way around, I boarded a plane for Los Angeles for the quickest training period in an unknown industry known to man. A month later I was in Vancouver, British Columbia working on my first film. From there, it was city after city, film to film. My introduction to the movies wasn’t a particular typical one either. I didn’t go to film school. I wasn’t a struggling artist that had moved to Los Angeles and had paid my dues waiting tables, nor did I even have the distinct desire to get into film. I was just a curious young guy interested in some people doing something so fascinating to me, that I just kept talking. I quickly learned that my fate was unlike those around me. Those other young men and women had been in the trenches for years already trying to earn the prized spot on working on a large studio film shooting on-location. Those who had applied for special programs to work with professional crew members, and those who interned for free a thousand miles from home for six months just for the experience and the resume qualifications. Here I was, new and inexperienced, getting paid to do a job that others my age would kill for. At first I just felt lucky, but soon lucky turned into un-deserving and quite frankly, unqualified. I was never told that or made to feel that way by anyone. That is something I put upon myself, not having the vast experience or the same conviction about film work that my colleagues had. I made up my mind that I would earn my
keep and that no job would be too menial. I would volunteer for even the most mundane and unpopular tasks, speaking to everyone, and being the first one in and the last one to leave. Every day. From that first day of working, I loved it all, the entire business. I learned that behind the scenes is where it’s all at from the deal making, to on-set antics. I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. So that is what I hope to offer here. An insightful and sometimes humorous look into the entertainment that we spend our leisure time viewing. I will be watching and giving reviews of films that are coming out and talking about ones that are currently still in production, and even the occasional big-name interview. With so much material to view in this multi-media age; films, television, pod-casts, film festivals, online viewing options, plays, award shows, national and local film events…well, one can get dizzy-headed keeping up. I hope to showcase a sprinkling from all of these entertainment platforms in this column, along with some fun facts you might not know. Also included will be stories and films connected to certain times of the year. Holiday vintage movies, for instance, provide the nostalgia needed to bring one around into the spiritof the season. Local filmmakers are also a great source of inspiration and can provide us with stories and tales that may hit a little closer to home. Live music performers and various venues in and around our area will surely grace the column, as well as a good pinch of Hollywood gossip and latest news. My sources and friends are long and seasoned in the industry, blessing me with many strings to pull! I hope you’ll join me here every month and follow along as I do what I love to do best … film jive! Most of all, I hope that you enjoy the column as much as I already do and we can discover together why there really is no business like showbusiness! Jimmy Ray Sorrells

Nature Lovers Holiday Remedy
W
orkout fads come and go, but virtually no other exercise program is as enduring as yoga. It’s been around for more than 5,000 years. Yoga does more than burn calories and tone muscles. It’s a total mind-body workout that combines strengthening and stretching poses with deep breathing and meditation for relaxation.
We already know that exercising is fantastic for our overall well-being. Hiking yoga is easier on the joints than other activities like running. It has also been proven that people who exercise outside are more likely to keep at it and stick to their programs, making hiking yoga an excellent choice for those wishing to become more active on a regular basis.
Add hiking in nature and what do you have? A complete package that can actually change your mind, body and soul for the better.
Such exercise reduces memory loss, and can also help prevent it. Researchers also found that it can reduce stress and anxiety, boost selfesteem, and release endorphins. Many people take medication to solve each and every one of these issues, but the solution to these ills may be a lot simpler than you think!
Aside from the almost instant feeling of calm and contentment that accompanies time outdoors, yoga and hiking in nature can reduce negative, obsessive thoughts. A recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that spending time in nature decreases obsessive, negative thoughts by a significant margin. Taking the time to regularly remove ourselves from urban settings and spend more time in nature can greatly benefit our psychological (and physical) wellbeing. A study conducted by psychologists Ruth Ann Atchley and David L. Strayer found that creative problem solving can be drastically improved by both disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with nature. The researchers of this study noted that both technology and urban noise are incredibly disruptive, constantly demanding our attention and preventing us from focusing, all of which can be taxing to our cognitive functions. A nice brisk hike with gentle yoga stretches, minus technology, can reduce mental fatigue, soothe the mind, and boost creative thinking. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is becoming more and more common among children. Children who have ADHD have a difficult time with impulse control and staying focused, they get distracted easily, and exhibit excessive hyperactivity. Yoga can help kids learn to cope with emotions and stay calm while a study conducted by Frances E Kup, PhD, and Andrea Faber Taylor, PhD, found that exposing children with ADHD to “green outdoor activities” reduces symptoms significantly. The results of this study suggest nature and yoga exposure can benefit anyone who has a difficult time paying attention and/or exhibits impulsive behavior.
Go take a hike and stretch! Hiking yoga has so many benefits why not give it a try at LG Ranch Saturday 9am or book a private session that fits into your own schedule. Grab your Spandex and BE Super! The Super Hero run is a 1-mile, 5K and 10K event that takes runners through the Dinosaur Capital of Texas. The run helps kick off the inaugural BE Festival, November 1113, which gives people the opportunity to converge on Glen Rose, Texas, and mark things off their life list. The three day event was designed to inspire people to live on purpose.
• BE Intentional: Access to all the Be Festival breakout sessions (e.g. art class, photography class, volunteer, cooking class, canoeing, and so much more)
A better way to describe this event...it’s a Bucket List Festival! Have you always wanted to run a 5K or 10K? Here’s your chance. Are you interested in taking a photography class or cooking class? What about a dance class? You’ll have the opportunity to do all of that, too.
The number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime is the Google definition of a bucket list. KOME 95.3 morning host, Drew Myers, has decided to take the concept of the bucket list and create what he is hoping will turn into an annual festival, known as the Be Festival, in Glen Rose. Myers became determined to start a festival in Glen Rose after noticing that other towns around the area held similar annual festivals and decided that it was time for people to get a taste of Glen Rose in a fun and unique way.
Eat some of the best burgers in Texas, while tasting some of the finest craft beers the state has to offer. The event includes a dynamic speaker’s series, a 5K and 10K race and a Texas Country Music concert. They are also incorporating a service project into the three-day event. You can purchase a VIP Allaccess pass to the Be Festival for $85, which includes the following items (limited to first 400 people): • BE Inspired: One ticket to the Friday night speaker’s series • BE Super: Entry into Super Hero Run
www.myhometownstexas.com
• BE Delicious: One ticket to Saturday’s cookoff • BE Amazed: One ticket to the Saturday night Texas Country Music concert
“The worst phrase in the English language is, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’. We want to inspire people to stop saying that and put their goals, dreams and aspirations in the spotlight”, says Myers.
