Welcome to My Hometowns Texas
Cultural & Entertainment Magazine of Parker Countiy
October is a
BOOtiful month in Parker County!
Falling leaves, shorter days and an end to the dog days of summer are a preamble to the fun filled days ahead. Annual autumn events are plentiful in October, beginning with a special evening for the kids at Weatherford College’s Safe Halloween event on October 1st , held in the Cout’s Hall parking lot on the Weatherford College campus. Adults will enjoy their own entertaining evening at the 93rd Annual Weatherford Chamber of Commerce Banquet, There’s No Place Like Home, held at the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse event facility on October 3rd. Even our canine friends won’t be left out of this month’s activities since Parker Paws holds their second annual Dogtoberfest at Fish Creek Restaurant and ACE hardware in Willow Park on October 5th. This event includes a doggie costume contest, wiener dog races, and a special visit from McGruff and the Parker County Cruisers car club. Ladies will enjoy Belk’s department store’s Girls Nite Out, Thursday, October 10th from 5 to 8:30 p.m., where they can indulge in refreshments, music, a fashion show and drawings for gift baskets full of fantastic goodies. Families are invited to spend a fun filled day at the Second Annual Hometown Heritage Stampede on Saturday, October 12th, in historic downtown Weatherford. This free event will include music by Buffalo Bill’s Cowboy Band and the Legends of Texas Band. Visitors to the Stampede will enjoy a stroll down Antique Alley for mom and dad followed by a visit to the Kiddie Korral for the little buckaroos. Another free event this month is the fourth annual Business Expo at Willow Park
Baptist Church on Thursday, October 17th. The Expo will bring together more than sixty diverse business exhibitors showcasing their products and services. Food trucks will provide snacks and treats and the afternoon will include live musical entertainment. October also brings the return of The Talking Tombstone Tour. The annual event is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Saturday, October 19th at Weatherford’s Old City Greenwood Cemetery with their latest offering titled, “Men of the Cloth”. Docents have been guiding visitors to different sites throughout the Cemetery, where they are greeted by period-attired actors sharing the life stories of early day citizens, since 2004. This fascinating history-based event is sponsored by the Parker County Heritage Society and draws hundreds of visitors every year. The list of annual October events draws to a close with two popular Chandor Gardens’ offerings. Sunday, October 20th the Gardens will host their 3rd Annual Autumn Art Walk where visitors will be invited to stroll the grounds and visit with a multitude of area artists and craftsmen; showing, demonstrating, and selling their creations. The day includes food, live music, and tours of the Chandor grounds and home. Last, but not least, in the long list of October offerings, is Chandor Gardens’ popular

Whew!! There is no shortage of fun things to do in October! And, while you’re out attending all the area events, don’t forget to take time out to Eat, Shop and Stay at our many fine restaurants, specialty stores and hotels in Parker County. Happy trails from your friends at My Hometown’s Texas

A
nd, since Sarah is just a sophomore in high school, that wasn’t all that long ago. But, for one so young, Sarah has managed to rack up an admirable list of accomplishments and awards in the art world. When she was only seven years old, she won her first art contest in school competing with students from first through sixth grade where she managed to place third, right behind a couple of upperclassmen. She then went on to place
second in a county competition between people of all ages… and Sarah was ten years old! For a period of time, Sarah stopped competing and even considered dropping out of art altogether but was encouraged to try again by a very special teacher who believed in her abilities. She then went on another winning streak and was even able to skip a grade in art, making her one of very few sophomore students taking Art 3.
since the first time you picked up a pencil. And, always remember, that no two artists paint the same and no two see things in the same colors. Everyone is unique, with their own vision of the world around them. Experts also agree that the most important thing for aspiring artists to do is expose themselves to the great art of the world. As you increase in sophistication you will be able to appreciate the sophistication of great artists.
Sarah is the perfect example of someone who is born with talent. Although experts in the art world agree that being born with ability isn’t absolutely necessary to become an artist, most would also say that those who are talented as children have a much easier road to travel. Advice from folks who have already walked the path that Sarah is on include a few guidelines for success as a struggling artist; when you finish your first sketchbook, buy another! By the time you’ve finished that you will have improved dramatically. They also advise keeping all of your books and looking back at them when you are feeling uninspired and ready to quit. You will be able to see how far you have come
Unlike a lot of artists, Sarah will most likely find success in her

lifetime. She has already used her talents in graphic design to create logos for several businesses and has been commissioned to create an original piece as well as to do restoration work on a painting. A solid beginning on an artistic road that will contain its share of twists and turns along the way but will surely be exciting and ultimately fulfilling for this young talent.

Area residents are being encouraged to take the pledge to THINK first of their local community, SHOP first at their local businesses, and BUY first from local companies. To this end, the City of Aledo and Aledo Economic Development Corporation will host the Urban Farmers’ Market each Saturday from September 23rd thru October 26th from 8a.m. to 1p.m. on North Front Street in Historic Downtown Aledo. “The new attraction will provide a gathering place where everyone can socialize, listen to live music, make new friends or just enjoy browsing the Market’s selection of fresh produce and handmade crafts and specialty items from Downtowns’ finest boutiques,” said Aledo Community Events Planner, Lori Wedgeworth.

ACTIVITIES
Celebrating their 10th Anniversary!!! For the past nine years, visitors from around the state of Texas have traveled to Weatherford to meet the “Silent Citizens” of Old City Greenwood Cemetery at the annual Talking Tombstones Tour. On October 19, docents will once again guide visitors through the cemetery from one site to another. They will be greeted by periodattired presenters who will share the life stories of “departed” residents of Weatherford who impacted the history of this area during the 1800’s. Included on the 10th anniversary tour will be: 1. Duncan Alexander, a local educator, who will portray Reverend Reuben A. Eddleman, a Methodist circuit rider who pastored the C.M.E. church during the War Between the States. 2. Reverend Van N. Houser, Senior Pastor of North Side Baptist Church, will portray Reverend William Gaston Parsons, a 36 year-old Cumberland Presbyterian pastor who was mistaken for a wild turkey, was shot and killed.
3. Pastor B. Gee Pearson will portray Reverend Henry Day Bantau, an editor of Disciples of Christ periodicals and an educator who organized Add-Ran College in Thorpe Springs, Texas.
6. Dr. Randolph Coney, Retired, will portray Reverend Father Patrick F. Brannan, a 14 year-old Confederate drummer boy-poet who became a lawyer, a Mayor of Weatherford and a Catholic priest. Volunteers for the 10th Anniversary tour include Linda Bagwell, Larry Bartoli, Kathleen Baker, Jean Bennett, Gwendolyn Dowdy-Nash, Dale Fleeger, Andra Franks, Ron Gaskill, Carolyn Glenn, Kaye Huse, Jacquie King, Kathy Mosby, Karen Nantz, Barbara Osborne, Lana Robinson, David Smith and Janice Smith.

Branded YO In the Hill Country of Texas, on a part locals call the Divide Capt. Charles Schreiner built a ranch and branded the Longhorns hide
A great ranch was created And the legend began to grow For over a hundred years the Longhorn cattle have been branded YO
He bought a herd in Gonzales County and slowly trailed’em West established the ranch on rugged land and now he faced the test
Through the good years and the lean times the YO still survives With a mix of hard work, sweat, blood, determination and a continuin’ pioneer drive
The test between man and nature a test all ranchers know Droughts and floods, snow and ice and times when inflation was the only thing that would grow
If you’re ever at the ranch when the West suns settin’ low you can almost hear the ol’ ranch sounds from a hundred years ago
He drove Longhorn cattle up the trail to railheads goin’ East providin’ work for lots a Cowboys and meat for city peoples feast A lotta good cowboys worked for Capt. Schreiner they were the ranches strong right hand they never shirked the hard work days and knew what it meant to ride for the Brand
The sounds of ‘hosses’ and cowboys come to life and you hear the Longhorns bawl all around, the sounds of history and from horse back Capt. Schreiner oversees it all Well they no longer drive’em up the trail like they did so long ago But they still raise and work Longhorn cattle and they’re still branded YO

Theatre of the Square presents a spine tingling thriller!
The Bad Seed October 18-November 3, 2013 Written by Maxwell Anderson, from William March’s novel Presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service
Theatre Off the Square opened its Fall Mini Season with the popular play “Bus Stop” and continues its tradition of quality theatre with their second offering, “The Bad Seed”. Set in a small Southern town, Maxwell Anderson’s play, based on the William March novel, is the story of eight year old Rhonda Penmark and her parents Kenneth and Christine. On the surface, little Rhonda is sweet, charming, full of old-fashioned graces, loved by her parents, and admired by all her elders. But those who know her more intimately suspect there is something ugly beneath all the surface charm; her peers can’t stand her, her teachers see a disturbing lack of feeling or sensitivity in her, and her parents, who dote on her, wonder if she’s capable of love, affection, remorse, or any of the characteristics that make us human. When one of Rhonda’s schoolmates is mysteriously drowned at a picnic, Mrs. Penmark is alarmed, for the boy who was drowned was the one who had won the penmanship medal that Rhonda felt she deserved. This edge of the seat story, starring Sierra Cherryhomes , a budding young actress from Weatherford, as Rhonda, was written by March in 1954 but has lost none of its vibrancy through the passage of time, and holds itself in the lead of creeping, stealthy thrillers that will curl your toes and straighten your hair!
The entire Addams Family will make an appearance and perform their theme song!
Come join the fun and support your local theatre at Theatre Off the Square’s Halloween Bash! Thursday, October 31st, 6:30-9:30 p.m. 114 N. classical/flamenco guitarist and composer here in the Parker County area, Kevin has performed extensively as a soloist and with his Latin-Jazz group, The Kevin Townson Band, for a variety of events throughout the DFW Metroplex for over two decades. He has released two CD’s to date featuring his unique blend of flamenco, jazz and pop sounds. Pictures from Spain (2003) and Between The Lines (2005).
In addition to his classical training, he is quite passionate about other genres of music such as Spanish flamenco music and jazz. Kevin says, “these genres of music show the full range of what the guitar is capable of achieving.” He goes on to say “Discovering music of other cultures and how that music connects with ours is something that’s very interesting and intriguing to me.” Kevin says he also likes to work on a popular tune every now and then; they’re fun to play and it keeps him in touch with what’s contemporary in our own culture. A native Texan, Kevin attended the University of North Texas in Denton where he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Classical guitar performance. Kevin says “going to UNT was such a wonderful experience. Just hanging out with musicians of that caliber and from all over the world was amazing.”
Kevin has been teaching guitar since the mid 1980’s and is presently Director of The Childbloom Guitar Program here in Parker County, which introduces music through the guitar to young people 5-12 years of age. He has been teaching this method since 1995, including the past 12 years here in Parker County. Kevin says “I really love teaching this method. It’s so wonderful to see the kid’s eyes just light up when they learn something they thought was not attainable. It’s such a fun way to communicate with young people and hopefully inspire them to greater goals.” Kevin is also an adjunct faculty member at Tarleton State where he teaches Classical and Jazz guitar.
for a few years but this year has been diagnosed as cancer free. He states, “It was such a rough portion of my life struggling everyday with this disease, to overcome it and be released from the doctor this year was a massive weight lifted off of my shoulders.” Since marrying his wife Kimla in 2008 he has taken on a new, deeper responsibility. Kimla was a sponsor for a family of refugees
from Africa, the Hassani family. Kevin tells me, “they have been a joy to mentor and nurture as well as guide them through the problems of acclimating to our culture.” Since he and his wife do not have children, they involve themselves heavily in those kids lives, along with all of his Childbloom guitar students. Kevin says he hopes to continue teaching, guiding, and inspiring young guitarists to reach their full potential both as musicians and individuals. He’s also looking forward to growing and discovering new and interesting ways of writing, and finally to recording a new CD. You can listen to Kevin this month at the following venues. Howell’s Western Cafe No designer burgers here, just classic country cooking like grandma used to make!
DINING
T
hat’s the philosophy behind the success of Howell’s Western Cafe. Originally opened in Azle around 1960 by Claude and Dorothy Howell, the country style restaurant made its permanent home in Springtown in 1962 where it has been going strong since. Today, the restaurant is run by Shirley Fletcher and Harold Buffington, daughter and grandson of Claude and Dorothy. Shirley remembers eating fried chicken at the original Azle location when she was a small child. “The fried chicken was made using a cast iron skillet and was the best I’ve ever eaten” says Shirley. She keeps that tradition alive and makes most everything with the same time honored recipes used by her parents. Dorothy Howell willed the restaurant to her daughter because, Shirley says, “she knew I would keep it running and she also wanted her grandson to get involved with the Cafe.” Today, Harold is enjoying the legacy left to him by his grandmother and working with his mother to continue Howells tradition of what one diner described as “nothing pretentious, just good food and friendly people”. Howells menu focuses on favorites such as enchiladas, pan fried steaks, chicken fried
steaks, cheese burgers and, of course, breakfast items, including homemade biscuits and gravy. In fact, most everything at Howell’s Western Cafe is made from scratch,
food their regulars will order each day they almost always know exactly what they want to drink. “We’ll see them coming through the door and have their drink order at the table before they sit down!” says the owner. When asked how Cafe culture has changed over the years Shirley admits that the “fast food” revolution has changed the eating habits of much of the population. “Some people are just looking for fast and quick these days. Older people remember when you knew that whatever you got was going to be good because restaurants cared about quality.” Howells has managed to hold its own in an increasingly difficult industry for over fifty years by sticking with their original philosophy of good food prepared well, and lots of it! Howells is open seven days a week and for four of those days it is open a staggering twenty-four hours! Shirley says overnight patrons differ in that they are mostly late night shift workers, truck drivers or travelers, whereas daytime customers tend to consist of more area townspeople. But no matter what the time of day, you will be greeted with a good meal and
a friendly smile at this Springtown treasure. The owners would like to thank all of their customers and employees who have been loyal to Howells all these years. “Unless the building falls down around us, we intend to keep going!” … parting words from a woman who truly understands the necessity for a good dose of “comfort food” when you really need it. including their hand cut french fries and onion rings. Some regular customers of the Cafe have been coming for more than thirty years to enjoy the food, drink coffee, and socialize. Shirley admits that even though the staff might not guess what
