Welcome to My Hometowns Texas
Cultural & Entertainment Magazine of Parker Countiy
Just yesterday, I came across a quote that seems to sum up my thoughts as another Thanksgiving is just around the corner. “Each day I am thankful for nights that turned into mornings, friends that turned into family, dreams that turned into reality and likes that turned into love.” As leaves turn to vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow and the end of another year approaches, November always seems to be the perfect month to reflect on all we are thankful for. Family, friends, lifestyle and everything that makes being in a smaller community worthwhile are sometimes taken for granted the rest of the year, as we bustle along, going about the business of daily life. So, it’s appropriate to say “thank you” to all the folks who work so hard to make Parker County, and the surrounding areas, the unique, diverse and friendly
places to live in that we have come to appreciate so much. In this edition of “My Hometowns Texas Cultural and Entertainment Magazine”, we feature just a few of the many artists contributing their talents to make our nights special and our days interesting. Country singer/songwriter Randy Brown lights up the nights entertaining us with his unique brand of down home music, while artist and author Geri Lowry shares her enthusiasm for seizing the day and following your dreams at any age. Aledo celebrates friends and family this holiday season with a day-long festival at their 13th Annual Christmas Tyme in Aledo and 36th Annual Arts and Crafts Fair. And, dreams turn into reality, as The Granbury Opera House holds its grand re-opening Gala and brings live theatre back as a holiday
gift to the community. As any resident of Parker County can attest to – you might come to this part of Texas because you like the hometown atmosphere and charm but you
will stay because of the warm and welcoming citizens… all that said, what’s not to love? Happy Thanksgiving Parker County!

Glass artist, Anne Simms, spurred Geri on to her next adventure by providing the guidance and expertise necessary to build her first art glass tower. Geri’s towers were a real hit at the Autumn Art Walk, held this past October, at Chandor Gardens in Weatherford. The artist sold out of her beautiful and unique pieces during the festival and, as a result, her towers hold court in gardens throughout Texas.

eri Lowry credits her experience as a wife, mother, Girl Scout leader, accomplished sailor, professional seamstress, shopping mall manager and leasing agent along with her thirty-year career in commercial real estate for the “substance” of her writings and the basis of her many adventures in life. She began serious writing in high school and her passion for telling stories continued into college, where she wrote news and feature articles for her college newspaper and following that wrote a weekly column in the city’s community newspaper.
Marriage, family, and several careers took priority until retirement, when she returned to her passion for writing stories. “I love to make people laugh and have fun with what they read,” she says, and her stories confirm this.

Cynthia James, another glass artist and owner of Artefactz on the Square in Granbury has joined Geri in her latest adventure. Recognizing they had a message to share, they decided to inspire others to follow their passion. “And Speaking of Empowerment...!” is a program they created for groups looking for a unique motivational presentation that lifts its listeners off their seats with a very clear message: “Listen to what’s tugging at your heart right now,
Geri claims, “Things evolve from one adventure to the next. For me, it started with knitting, and I simply had to write about the incredible enjoyment I was having with newfound friends.” Her first published book, “The Rats of Grandville” came out in 2012, and is the first in a Trilogy about a group of women who gather to knit but unexpectedly find themselves making a furry

Congratulations to the project team for the Aledo Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion, which was honored in October by the Texas Muncipal League. The project won the 2013 Municipal Excellence Award in the category of Public Works, Cities Under 25,000.

The project expanded Aledo’s wastewater treatment plant under challenging site conditions — a flood plain on one side and a steep bluff beneath an affluent neighborhood on the other — and finished on time and $600,000 under budget. It is also the first treatment plant in Texas to use a microwave-powered ultraviolet disinfection system.

THEATRE OFF THE SQUARE continues the second production of their Fall Mini Season, “Bad Seed”, written by Maxwell Anderson, from William March’s novel, and presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. The psychological thriller is directed by Wally Jones, with Hank Minor and Laurie Jones as Assistant Directors and Kathy Manning as Stage Manager. The final weekend runs Friday, November 1 and runs through November 3. The scene is a small Southern town where Colonel and Christine Penmark live with their 8 year old daughter Rhoda. On the surface little Rhoda Penmark is sweet, charming, full of old-fashioned graces, loved by her parents, and admired by all her elders. Several disturbing incidents cause Rhoda’s mother to have an uneasy feeling about her. Christine’s quiet, idyllic world is changed, as she begins to uncover secrets long buried by her subconscious and unlocks the mystery of a murder that hits a little too close to home.

Granbury Opera House – On a mission to warm the heart, uplift the spirit and tell worthy stories! Recently, I had the privilege of touring the soon to be completed Granbury Opera House renovation with Andrew Barrus, Creative Director of the Granbury Theatre Company. While being issued our hard hats in the office construction trailer, I noticed blueprints of building plans and quickly realized the extensive planning that went into the improvements to the Opera House, which was originally constructed in 1886. The plan included keeping the historic landmarks intimate, rustic feel, with its exposed limestone walls and pressed tin ceilings, while making it a larger state of the art theater that would meet Americans with Disabilities requirements. Many of the improvements are backstage, where rehearsal spaces, new dressing rooms, and places to build and store sets have been added to replace a Quonset hut that was torn down. After putting on the hard hats, we walked to the back of the theatre where work crews were busy cleaning rock walls, installing floors, building stairs, and doing masonry work on the building. Completion of the Granbury Opera House is in its final stages, and the construction crew is dedicated to working seven days a week to assure the black-tie
gala on December 5 and the opening of “A Christmas Carol” on December 6 will take place on schedule. As we walked through the building, Andrew pointed out where the rehearsal room was located, and showed me the new dressing rooms, elevator and storage spaces that have all been very carefully planned and constructed. The spectacular stage boasts a new orchestra pit and the building contains new lighting and a state of the art sound system. Beautifully curved staircases grace the lobby and lead to the upper three stories while a functional basement remains located under the stage. Built in 1886 The Granbury Opera House has managed to rise like a phoenix from the ashes more than once in her 127 year existence. Opera houses were once plentiful in Texas between the late 1800’s and World War I and most major towns had one, but their popularity waned in the early 20th century as movies and radio took over as the most popular forms of entertainment. After closing in 1911 and remaining dark for 64 years,
the opera house came back to life in 1975 and thrilled theatregoers from across North Texas for 20 years. In 1995 the theatre suffered a financial set-back and to avoid closing, once again, was taken over by the City of Granbury. Barrus, who started the Granbury Theatre Company in 2011, believes that there is definitely an audience for live theatre in this north Texas town. “We think the Opera House will dramatically help our tourism,” Granbury City Manager Wayne McKethan said. “We see it as a complement to the lake that will bring more people to Granbury.” Today, in Texas, opera houses are a rarity, which makes the rebirth of the Granbury Opera House a unique entertainment experience for the community and visitors alike. Once open, supporters say, the theatre will be used for a multitude of purposes including children’s theatre
and lecture series, with ballet, symphony and live concert performances possibly added down the road. The full potential of the renovated structure is just waiting to be discovered!

On December 5th, 2013, the Granbury Opera House will reopen at a Premiere Gala extravaganza with dignitaries from around the state in attendance. This red carpet, black tie event includes valet parking, hors d’oeuvres and champagne, with music provided by a world class string quartet and excerpts performed from Granbury Theatre Company’s production of “A Christmas Carol”. The evening concludes with guests entertained in VIP style in an outdoor tented area featuring dancing, music, drink and light appetizers. Fort Worth native, Randy Brown, has been a singer, songwriter, musician and showman for over a decade and for almost six years he has been sharing his talents with those lucky enough to hear him at The Railhead in Willow Park most every Tuesday evening. The popular singer/songwriter series at The Railhead draws a great crowd each week. “It’s always fun! We have regulars that never miss a show and then there’s always new folks coming in,” says the country artist. “We start swapping
songs about 7:30 p.m. each week and have had everybody you can think of at one time or another, including legends like Gary P. Nunn to new Texas/Red Dirt guys like Johnny Cooper and Deryl Dodd.”
Randy’s passion for music began at an early age and was nurtured by a youth filled with rodeo dances, chuck wagon campfires and big dancehall nights. His earliest memories are of cowboy suits, twin fiddles and crying steel guitars at honky-tonks in Fort Worth where every Saturday night was a who’s - who of real Texas music. In fact, his live album, “Heroes, Legends, Friends, and Me” was recorded in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards and includes many songs from Randy’s influences that have been part of his arsenal for years.
