are any major changes needed, they are made in the small size and once the client has agreed that the Maquette is a good representation of the final piece the process of producing the final full-sized monument in clay is started. Many painstaking and precise steps are required to complete the finished piece. When the sculpture is finished to the artist’s satisfaction the client is brought in to view the final product. Once approved, the piece moves on to a foundry where molds are made and wax patterns are fashioned from the molds and prepared for casting into bronze.
Robert Summers – Creating art that is “larger than life”
T
exas native Robert Summers began his lifelong career as a sought after painter and sculptor at the tender age of two, creating figures and animals with bread dough and graduating to oil painting by the age of nine. Although Summers had no formal training, other than a short course in mixing colors at the age of fifteen, he began to explore his God-given talent in his twenties and has since become proficient in many mediums including: egg and acrylic tempera, oil, dry-brush watercolor, pastel and pencil as well as wax and clay. His ability as a sculptor has led to numerous commissions for major projects in cities throughout the United States.
Summers long list of major works include many “larger than life” sculptures, a few of which are: a nine-foot statue of golf legend Byron Nelson, which is prominently located near the first tee at the TPC course at the Four Seasons Resort and Club at Las Colinas in Irving; a standing figure of Texas pioneer, Major George B. Erath, on display at the Texas
Rangers Hall of Fame; and a nine-foot statue of John Wayne for the John Wayne Airport in Orange County California. The sculpture of John Wayne is so life-like that, upon it’s unveiling, it prompted his children to remark, “This is the first time I’ve seen my Father since he passed away. It looks like he’s gonna take another step forward. You caught the walk, the wardrobe, the attitude and most importantly the spirit of the man. Thank you.” Robert created his largest bronze for the Pioneer Plaza at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas. The piece, a cattle drive, includes seventy longhorn steers herded by three riders on horseback. Completed in the mid 1990’s, the work took him two and a half years to finish. The bronze trail drive covers four acres and was a break-through in that the artist designed both the sculptures as well as the landscaping. This monumental bronze piece has the honor of being the most photographed landmark in Dallas.

The process of producing a monument starts with the creation of a small scale model called a Maquette. Maquettes are between twelve and thirty-six inches tall and are primarily used to ensure that the client and the artist have the same vision of the completed piece. If there
Equally important are Summers’ beautiful paintings of the contemporary West. “I paint the people and things I know,” he observes. “I find it hard to paint anything unless it relates to my own experience. Occasionally I’ll read some historical story and try to recreate that moment, but I have to be careful to make

the costumes and weapons correct. Cattle ranching may be a vanishing way of life, but the basic principles are still much the same as they were a hundred years ago.” Although Robert Summers has garnered many awards, one of his greatest honors came on July 4, 1975 when, then Governor, Dolph Briscoe and the Texas Legislature named him as the official Texas Bicentennial Artist. His works have appeared in hundreds of newspapers and periodicals world-wide,
Robert resides in his boyhood home of Glen Rose and besides being one of Texas’ finest artists also plays bagpipes, practices falconry, acts and sings contemporary Christian music… a Renaissance man carrying on the true cowboy spirit of this small Texas town.

32nd Annual Candlelight Tour of Homes
Will be held in Weatherford on Saturday, December 14, 2013, from 1-7pm. This festive event is sponsored by the Parker County Heritage Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the buildings, sites, and documents that provide the “uniqueness of place” for Parker County. Eight homes and venues will be featured on this year’s tour, and they may be visited in any order. Volunteer docents, some of whom will be elegantly attired in period clothing, will inform and entertain visitors at each location. Many of this year’s stops on the Tour have never been featured before, or have not been on the Tour in many years. Join your friends on a guided tour of the Parker County Courthouse, given by Judge Mark Riley, who was intimately involved with the Courthouse’s restoration 10 years ago. Visit the Lewis

The beautiful boyhood home of former Speaker of the House Jim Wright, Jr., who was also the mayor of Weatherford from 1950-1954, will make its debut on the Tour this year, and visitors can take in the Texas Historical Marker which will be dedicated at this home during the week prior to the Tour. Be awestruck by the beauty of All Saints’ Anglican Church at 125 S. Waco Street, and hear about its many famous visitors through the years. Two private homes, the Altfather House at 410 W. Tree of Bells
Christmas Tyme in Aledo The Center of Hope of East Parker County is known for its charitable giving and helping those in need year round. During the holidays, difficult times are magnified. As the need for assistance increases, so does the need for resources. Local business partners have come together to create an opportunity for the citizenry to recognize the Center of Hope’s value with a gesture of appreciation. We are inviting Aledo and the surrounding communities to share the spirit of giving by decorating the Center of Hope Tree of Bells. During the Christmas Tyme in Aledo festivities on December 7th and for a small donation of any monetary amount, we are asking community members of all ages to place a small bell on a very special Christmas tree to be donated to the Center of Hope of East Parker County.
to say “thank you” to the Center of Hope’s priceless services. This is a wonderful opportunity to express our appreciation with a special Center of Hope Tree of Bells and a collection of funds to help the center spread a little cheer. Whatever we can give makes a difference. Share the word and join us. Christmas Tyme in Aledo

The Vision It was bone chillin’ cold, that winter night as he saddled up the bay was his turn to watch the herd jist another part of drawin’ a cowboy’s pay As he rode off into the darkness he snugged his hat down tight and turned his collar up against a wind, that howled and began to bite As he circled the herd with the bay at a slow and peaceful gait everything seemed in order and for the sun he now had to wait He was tryin’ not to fall asleep when he heard the most beautiful sound it came from all around him its source could not be found A million angelic voices filled the darkened night when all at once the darkness was replaced, with a brilliant light He could scarce believe the herd didn’t move or what was takin’ place then he heard the voice of God and saw Christ’s holy face He got down off the bay and bowed down on his knee God said, “I gave you my son to light the way to me”. “Go forth from here and live your life anew Christ was born and died to give everlastin’ peace and life to you” Well the voice and light were gone as he raised up from the ground the sun was jist beginning to rise as he mounted and made one last round As he rode back to the bunk house safe and warm it suddenly dawned on him what day this was, this was Christmas morn.

nderson’s Good Medicine – Ukulele Daily
As the Anderson’s say, they are bringing back that “loving feeling” through originals, classics and smooth listening selections with their unique style of acoustic instrumentation and gentle harmonies. This family band comprised of Michael and Laura Anderson and their son Joshua have created a musical project that’s a treat for music lovers of all ages. Michael and Laura play the ukulele and join together on vocals and harmony while Joshua plays the upright bass and adds his vocal talents as well. The combination is a joy to listen to as each member of
this special trio brings their own artistic style to the mix. Michael spent much of his youth playing music and touring the country with different bands, the most famous being the Country Gazette where he played the upright bass. “When I picked up the ukulele it seems every song that came to me from my memory easily flowed out of this instrument. The ukulele brings back the feeling I had when I played years ago. It is an orchestra within the four strings” says Michael. “I was surprised when my husband told me we were going to check out a ukulele at the music store but after picking one up and being able to play songs right from the start, I was the one that insisted we bring it home. One ukulele turned into two then three when an electric version appeared in the music room.” Laura explained. Before long,

Michael was teaching her the harmonies he wanted and working in a solid artistic bass line provided by their son. Joshua watched his dad perform in various venues most of his childhood and picked up playing music at an early age. He played music in High School with his dad helping to transport his earliest band until he could drive. Although he still plays and works on his own musical projects he willingly supports the beauty of being a family musician as well. Joshua adds the bottom to the music that is Anderson’s Good Medicine.
Michael Anderson’s grandfather played the fiddle and told stories of the way things were when he was growing up in the Central Texas Norwegian community of Norse. These stories had a profound impact on Michael at an early age and prompted him to create “From the Heart Storytellers” bringing his “spiritual” perspective to storytelling. He accompanies his tales, which include topics on the ancient healing arts, energy (chi) exercise and the development of the Human Potential, with Native American flute, drum and guitar music. He also conducts combined workshops and classes on Yoga, T’ai Chi-Chi Kung, FengShui, Reiki, and “Conscious Living”. Together, the Anderson family works to promote the education and preservation of folk traditions through music, song and storytelling bringing a
variety of cultures to life for an appreciative audience. Anderson’s Good Medicine – Ukulele Daily Michael, Laura and Joshua Anderson 817-596-0550/817-771-2570 or email: biotuner@aol.com
