An orphan born in a public toilet in Beijing searches all over the world for a miracle cure for his ailing grandmother who raised him. A young man from Busan discovers a mysterious girl in front of a public toilet by the sea and goes on a quest for a magical elixir to save her. Other characters that populate this film include a pair of Indian brothers who are caretakers of a Wan Chai public toilet and a hitman who completes his final assignment in a New York City public toilet… Fruit Chan met the investor for this film in Busan, an encounter which made possible this international collaboration. Chan fully took advantage of the flexibility of the digital format to let his imagination run wild with a tale that blends scatology with ruminations about life and death.

After winning an award at the Locarno Film Festival, Fruit Chan took Made in Hong Kong (1997) to be screened in the Main Competition at the Busan International Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize. Chan went on to make many awardwinning films and is still considered one of the mainstays of Hong Kong cinema. Public Toilet is Chan’s first work in digital format, and was filmed at various locations in Beijing, Busan, New York and India. After being shown as part of A Window on Asian Cinema section at Busan, the film went on to win the San Marco Prize - Special Mention at Venice Film Festival. It featured performances by up-and-coming Korean actors such as Jang Hyuk and Jo In-sung, the latter of whom appeared with Son Ye-jin in The Classic the following year, which became a big hit in Korea and abroad.
