After publishing the Women’s newspapers for the past 40 years, I am continually asked how we can be so successful in a world where print media is slowly dying and succumbing to electronic media, this is very simple. The paper is composed of the individual components that effects our everyday lives, whether it be medical, legal, business, fashion, community events and so much more. The articles are featured by local experts in their field to educate the reader, so they can make the best decision possible in choosing what is best for their lifestyle. It is good to know that you choose these experts that are available in your neighborhood. Have a beautiful spring. The Publisher

Coronary Calcium Score: What is it and how it can help me stay heart healthier? The presence of calcium in the coronary arterial wall is a reliable marker for obstructive coronary artery disease. The coronary artery calcification (CAC) score can be calculated based on CT scan imaging. This is a relatively simple to do, at a reasonably low cost and low risk of radiation exposure. The score generated, also called Agatston score, has important predictive value in regards to the probability of major coronary events, such as heart attacks in the near to intermediate future. It has been established that a CAC score of 0 is the ideal result for the test. It means that the probability of having significant coronary artery disease is less than 1 %. This confers a favorable outlook in terms of the low likelihood of coronary events such as heart attacks or death. A score of 1-99 indicates mild degree of coronary disease, 100-399- moderate disease and greater than 400 is compatible with severe disease. This score is mostly indicative of the
extend of coronary artery disease and less of the severity. According to the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association recommendations, the CAC is more reliable in individuals considered to be at intermediate risk for coronary artery disease as calculated by the Framingham risk score which is based on factors such as age, cholesterol levels and elevated blood pressure. A calculated risk of 10-20 % for cardiac events or mortality at 10 years is the recommended patient in whom to obtain a CAC score for further risk stratification and preventive treatment. The coronary calcium score works best for individuals in their late 40’s to mid 60 ‘s with no previous cardiovascular history and without symptoms. A moderate to high score (over 100) would indicate a higher probability of heart attacks, stroke or even cardiac death. This will also
The County 2019 Woman’s Journal # I Spring
lead to making stronger recommendations for more aggressive risk factors modification and reduction by your healthcare provider. In addition, further screening for “silent” coronary blockages might be warranted such as stress testing for those individuals in the higher score categories. The CAC score is a valuable tool for the right patient in helping determine the level of risk
for coronary disease and possibly heart attacks or even death and should be used in association with other traditional and more established risk factors such as age, high cholesterol, hypertension, sedentary life style, smoking and overweight. Diabetes mellitus is considered an equivalent to coronary artery disease and the CAC is less reliable in those patients. You might want to discuss
with your healthcare provider the use of this tool, if you are in the right age group, have no symptoms and you are at an intermediate risk for coronary events as calculated by the Framingham risk calculator (10-20 % chance in 10 years). Please look this up! It might prove the proverbial “an ounce of prevention versus a ton of cure” deal for you. Know your calcium score!

WOMEN AND SPRINGTIME FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES Spring is approaching, and lots of women from the young to the growing senior population will once again venture outdoors to enjoy all that Sussex County has to offer. They will start to use the bike and hiking trails, golf courses, pickleball, and tennis courts, or jog and walk on the boardwalks and enjoy the spring air. For some, it is a personal affirmation to live a healthier lifestyle. For others, it may be a way to recondition after joint replacement, cardiac surgery, surviving cancer, or surgery on your feet. Despite the reasoning, increasing your activity requires some care of your feet and ankles to avoid common injuries, especially with women, because historically, women’s shoes fit tighter in the toes and heel and have caused issues. This history of improper shoe gear, genetics, and increase activity can change the foot anatomy. These factors, in combination with aging, can reduce muscle strength, reflexes, agility, speed, and energy. Consequently, proper physical modifications, conditioning, and shoe gear become critical in reducing the chance of injury. Here are some helpful tips to avoid foot and ankle exertion or injury: Stretch • The muscles or joints that need to stretch are the ankles, Achilles tendon, calf muscles, quadriceps, and hamstrings. Proper Footwear • Invest in a good pair of athletic shoes! • The key to finding the right sneaker is the sole. Each sport may require a different type of sneaker, but it must always provide stability. • The sneaker should be comfortable as soon as you try them on. There is no break-in period. • Have enough room in the toe box. • Dr. Wendolowski can help pick out the proper shoe for each activity. With activity and all of your good intentions, you may still encounter these typical foot and ankle injuries: Ankle sprain/strain • Typically occurs with a sudden twist of the ankle. There may or may not be immediate swelling. Achilles tendonitis • (Pain in the back of the ankle) most commonly caused by stop and go action. Plantar fasciitis • Pain at the bottom of the heel most common when stepping down in the morning and after rest and may gradually subside but never truly goes away. Reasons can range from flat feet, high arches, unsupportive shoes, weak muscles, and direct injury. Neuromas • Inflammation of the nerve in the front of the foot due to excessive pressure.
4 I Spring 2020
Stress fractures • Caused by repetitive trauma to a bone, typically the metatarsals or long bones in the foot. Injured toenails (bruised/ingrown/fall off) • Caused by repetitive trauma to the tips of the toes. Conventional treatments for these injuries are: RICE • Rest, Ice for 24-72 hours, Compression, and Elevation Professional Care: Custom Orthotics or Braces • These are custom-designed to control the mechanical instability of your feet and/or ankle, reduce pain, and prevent the need for possible surgery in the future. It is always better to seek the advice of a podiatrist for any specific foot or ankle questions, injuries, or fractures. Schedule your appointment at 302-297-8431. Testimonial “Dr. Joe has a friendly manner, and he’s professional, yet you know he’s your friend. He has certainly done fine by me and my foot issue.“ -Mr. John Obenchain.

Radio Frequency Microneedling Michelle Parsons, MD is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Aesthetic Medicine. Most individuals experience facial aging at some point in their lives. While many patients look into plastic surgery to correct imperfections like wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin, there are those who desire an alternative solution that is less invasive. At Renove Med Spa, we offer state of the art treatments like the Pixel 8 Radio Frequency Skin Tightening, to rejuvenate the face and provide you with a youthful and attractive appearance. What is Radiofrequency Skin Tightening? Radiofrequency skin tightening is a technique used to tighten sagging and thinning skin with minimal pain, downtime and expense with fantastic results, noticeable within a few weeks after the first treatment. Radiofrequency skin tightening treatments use small micro needles to deliver a form of heat energy, or radiofrequency, past the top layer of skin, deeper into the skin tissues. This causes a micro-injury to the skin, sending a message to the skin to heal and repair itself, without negatively impacting the outward appearance of the skin. This procedure also triggers fibroplasia, the process in which the body forms new fibrous tissue and stimulates the production of collagen,
causing collagen fibers to become shorter and more tense. At the same time, the molecules that make up collagen are left undamaged. Skin elasticity increases and loose, sagging skin is tightened.
What Can I Expect During a Radiofrequency Skin Tightening Treatment? Prior to your treatment, your skin will be cleansed and a topical numbing cream will be applied and allowed to take effect for 20 minutes. Once you are ready for the treatment, you will be placed in a comfortable reclined position and the treatment will proceed area by area. A full facial treatment takes 25 minutes. You can watch a video of Dr. Michelle Parsons performing a treatment on her website https://www.renovemedspa. org/rf-microneedling. There should be minimal discomfort with the treatment, as the energy levels are adjustable for all skin types. As the treatment

proceeds, you will feel as if you have a moderate sunburn. Cool air is used for comfort during the treatment, which is typically not needed upon completion of the treatment. Prior to leaving, a hydrating cream and sunscreen will be applied to your skin. Makeup can be applied after 12 hours. When Will I see Results from Radiofrequency Skin Tightening? Immediately following the treatment, most people will feel as if they had a windburn or mild sunburn. There can be mild swelling after the treatment, but not everyone has swelling. Skin tightening and softening of visible lines and wrinkles can be seen as soon as 4 weeks after the treatment, and will continue to improve and tighten the skin for 3 to 6 months following the treatment. It is recommended to receive 3 to 5 treatments over the course of a year, typically spread apart by four weeks. There are discounts for package
treatments. Since the improvement of skin tone, texture, is from your natural healing of your skin, results are long lasting andiIn general, and with proper skin care, results last years. What Areas Can Be Treated with Radiofrequency Radiofrequency treatments are most commonly performed on facial and neck skin. It is exceptionally beneficial around the eyes, to treat loose sagging eye skin, and around the mouth, to improve lip lines. It is also common to treat the chest and hands. We also treat sagging knee skin, stretch marks, surgical scars and acne scars.

Oral health: A window to your overall health By Richard J. McCann, D.M.D., P.A. Your oral health is more important than you might realize. Learn how the health of your mouth, teeth and gums can affect your general health Did you know that your oral health offers clues about your overall health — or that problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body? Protect yourself by learning more about the connection between your oral health and overall health. What’s the connection between oral health and overall health? Like other areas of the body, your mouth teems with bacteria — mostly harmless. But your mouth is the entry point to your digestive and respiratory tracts, and some of these bacteria can cause disease. Normally the body’s natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, keep bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Also, certain medications — such as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers, diuretics and antidepressants — can reduce saliva flow. Saliva washes away food and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, helping to protect you from microbes that multiply and lead to disease. Studies suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with a severe form of gum disease (periodontitis) might play a role in some diseases. And certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body’s resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe.
Pneumonia. Certain bacteria in your mouth can be pulled into your lungs, causing pneumonia and other respiratory diseases.
include eating disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, certain cancers and an immune system disorder that causes dry mouth (Sjogren’s syndrome).
Certain conditions also might affect your oral health, including:
Tell your dentist about the medications you take and about changes in your overall health, especially if you’ve recently been ill or you have a chronic condition, such as diabetes.
Diabetes. By reducing the body’s resistance to infection, diabetes puts your gums at risk. Gum disease appears to be more frequent and severe among people who have diabetes. Research shows that people who have gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels. Regular periodontal care can improve diabetes control. HIV/AIDS. Oral problems, such as painful mucosal lesions, are common in people who have HIV/AIDS. Osteoporosis. This bone-weakening disease is linked with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss. Certain drugs used to treat osteoporosis carry a small risk of damage to the bones of the jaw. Alzheimer’s disease. Worsening oral health is seen as Alzheimer’s disease progresses. Other conditions that might be linked to oral health
How can I protect my oral health? To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene daily. • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a softbristled brush using fluoride toothpaste. • Floss daily. • Use mouthwash to remove food particles left after brushing and flossing. • Eat a healthy diet and limit food with added sugars. • Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn. • Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings. • Avoid tobacco use. Also, contact your dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises. Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health.
R JM
RICHARD J McCANN, D.M.D., P.A. I Committed to Excellence
What conditions can be linked to oral health? Your oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions, including: Endocarditis. This infection of the inner lining of your heart chambers or valves (endocardium) typically occurs when bacteria or other germs from another part of your body, such as your mouth, spread through your bloodstream and attach to certain areas in your heart. Cardiovascular disease. Although the connection is not fully understood, some research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. Pregnancy and birth complications. Periodontitis has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

Caring for the memory impaired… Helpful Hints Taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia can be very difficult. Here at Always Best Care, we strive to educate people in how to better take care of loved ones and yourself when dealing with this disease. We understand that it may make the caregiver feel overwhelmed and isolated. We want you to know that these are very normal feelings. Here are some tips to help you better understand the disease and how to manage it as best you can. Typical Behaviors • It is important for people with memory impairment to maintain as much independence as possible. This will help their overall wellbeing and attitude. • Expect tasks to take longer. Short-term memory is greatly affected in this disease. It is normal for them to forget what they were doing in the middle of performing a task. Just be sure to redirect them back to the task at hand. • Aggression and agitation are a normal reaction with these diseases. They may curse, scream, insult and become violent. You need to know this is not your fault and you aren’t doing anything wrong. They aren’t doing it on purpose. Remain calm, don’t argue and try and redirect them. Tips • Establishing a routine and sticking to it can reduce frustrations. It also helps them feel independent and in control, so you can experience less agitation. For example, showering upon waking up and then going to eat breakfast. If you try and switch up the routine, it may confuse them and result in negative

attitude changes. • Alzheimer’s makes it hard to focus. It is important to reduce distractions. For example, if you are sitting down to eat dinner, make sure you turn off the tv or radio so that they may focus on just eating. • Stay away from open ended questions. Always try and ask a question that would require a yes or no answer. If you are unable to do so, ask a question giving two choices. For example, “would you like scrambled eggs or oatmeal for breakfast?” • Limit background noise. Loud, abrupt noises can cause agitation. Soft tones and a quiet environment are best to keep them relaxed. • One step instructions. When assigning a task for them to complete, try using one step instructions. For example, don’t say “Get dressed.” Instead, instruct them step by step. “Put your socks on.” And when they have completed that task, instruct the next step. “Put your shoes on.”
that was popular when a person was between the ages of 18 to 25 has proven to be most effective in promoting positive responses. Here are some examples of its uses: Help awaken memories, Reduces agitation and improves behavioral issues, Motivates them to participate in exercise, Relaxing music
can provide comfort and is soothing to help calm their mind. Don’t get burnt out. No one ever said it was easy taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s disease. It can be physically and mentally draining. If you feel anxious, exhausted, or depressed
make sure you take appropriate measures to take care of yourself. Remember, if you can’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to better take care of others. If you feel you need help, Always Best Care is here for you. Contact us anytime for a free consultation.
Maintain a safe environment in your home. • Avoid extension cords, area rugs and clutter to avoid falls. Make sure there are non-skid mats in showers/tubs. Use locks. Make sure you lock away medicine, fire arms and anything potentially dangerous. Take fire safety precautions. Make sure you hide lighters and matches. Keep fire extinguishers in an accessible location and make sure smoke detectors have batteries. Make sure electrical outlets that aren’t being used are covered with appropriate hardware. Music therapy has shown to be extremely helpful. Music

Creating a Better Tomorrow with Trauma-Informed Care Overcoming the effects of trauma in Delaware Ann Wayne
Chief Executive Officer, SUN Behavioral Health Delaware Ann Wayne has more than 25 years of experience working directly with mental health and substance abuse disorder patients, and maximizing the positive impact of community, caregiver and family collaboration. At SUN, she leads a continuum of care that focuses on meeting patients where they are in their journeys for improved mental health while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and quality of treatment.
Trauma is pervasive throughout our state and country. Nearly 61% of all U.S. adults have lived through at least one adverse childhood experience (Trauma-Informed Care Implementation Resource Center, 2020), and 48% of children in Delaware are being exposed to one or more right now (KIDS COUNT, 2015). Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, are defined as stressful or traumatic experiences that disrupt the safe, nurturing environment that children need to thrive. They are categorized as chronic sources of stress including abuse, addiction or mental illness in the home and domestic violence. The ripple effects of this level of trauma are incalculable. Unmitigated, they can have negative impacts spanning an individual’s entire lifetime. That’s where Governor John Carney has stepped in to make Delaware a trauma-informed state. A decision that has the power to immensely improve the daily lives of people impacted by trauma in our community. Approaching individuals from a position of empathy is the first step in breaking the long-lasting effects of trauma. Our women-led staff at SUN Delaware sees
the ramifications of trauma every day, which is why we ensure traumainformed care is at the core of everything we do.
WHAT DOES TRAUMAINFORMED CARE MEAN? Repeated exposure to trauma can impact brain development in children and rewire their brains’ responses to stress. Later in life, many have difficulties with issues related to emotional regulation (depression, anxiety, chronic diseases and even suicide) because of those early experiences. Trauma-informed care works to acknowledge that reality by: • creating an environment where people are respectful, competent, sensitive and culturally aware; • implementing evidence-based, trauma-informed principles and approaches that address the effects associated with trauma; • developing a common language and framework for dialogue and discussion to enhance communication and progress;
“I came here with the mentality that I didn’t need to be here, and I definitely didn’t want to be here. Now I am SO grateful for the experience and help. The staff, techs, nurses, etc. have been so kind and helpful.”
SUN Delaware Patient
• assessing the implementation of basic principles of trauma-informed approaches in various settings; • increasing the effectiveness of all services and assistance; and • ensures that the educational community does no harm. (Office of Governor Carney, 2019)
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA People who have had trauma in their lives should understand how that experience affects them, directly and indirectly. In the original ACE Study, respondents were found to be more likely to consider themselves alcoholics, engage in unsafe sexual activity, smoke, take street drugs and even attempt suicide.
WHAT DOES TRAUMAINFORMED CARE MEAN FOR SUN PATIENTS? We treat the whole person — not just the illness. As care providers, we lead with the question of what has happened to our patients instead of what’s wrong with them. We find that answering the first question often leads us to identify the latter. This approach allows us better treat our patients and more fully heal them. Our compassionate, trauma-informed care experts are at the ready for anyone seeking help to deal with their past traumas, including co-occurring treatment. It’s never too late to get help.
Is Living with the Pain of the Past a Struggle? We Can Help. Our trauma-informed care team of experts is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call SUN first. 302-604-5600 21655 Biden Ave., Georgetown, DE 19947 | sundelaware.com

Hospice Equals “Hope” for Parents of Medically Complex Child And ironically, it wasn’t until they met their hospice team that they felt they were allowed to hope. Patty remembers first meeting Nurse Colleen, who gave Patty her “first genuine smile”— not one of sympathy, but of hope. Patty explains it was as if Colleen were saying, “These people have hope for this baby’s life. No matter how short. It doesn’t matter. Hope in the time that’s given.”
Hospice can seem like a frightening word to a family with a medically complex child. But not for Patty and Zach. To them, “hospice” equals “hope”—hope for the freedom to embrace every joy-filled moment with their baby boy. When Patty and Zach brought four-day-old Leo home, they were greeted by balloons at the door, two excited big brothers, adoring grandparents… and their Katybug team from Delaware Hospice. It was a joyous occasion; Patty and Zach had been told not to even bother bringing a car seat to the hospital. Thirteen weeks into her pregnancy, Patty had gotten the phone call with the frightening news: her baby had Trisomy 18— a genetic condition with a high rate of miscarriage, stillbirth, and fatality before the age of one. They were encouraged to terminate the pregnancy. The family was faced with one difficult decision after another. Ultimately, they decided to enjoy and love Leo for as long as he was able to live. They determined that if the baby was born alive, they wanted him to have “comfort care” rather than significant medical intervention. As baby Leo defied one odd after another in his first few days of life, the family focused on enjoying each tiny moment and milestone. But at every turn, they were reminded of how serious Leo’s condition was and not to let their hopes get too high. When it became clear there was a possibility Leo would leave the hospital, the hospital’s palliative team set the family up with Delaware Hospice’s Katybug pediatric program to support them in their home.
12 I Spring 2020
A year later, the family’s Katybug Nurse Lynn was at Leo’s first birthday party. Lynn had become part of the family, and Leo was thriving. Only about 10% of babies born with his condition make it to their first birthday. He was the family’s little miracle. Once Lynn has helped the family through one more cold and flu season, Leo will “graduate” from Katybug. Even though the step should be a happy milestone, Zach wishes they could keep Katybug forever. Getting in-home services and having someone to call at a moment’s notice—even in the
middle of the night—has been an enormous help to the family, especially since the children’s hospital where Leo is seen is a 2-hour drive. Zach explains, “If we can use the hospice resources it’s amazing… We don’t want to graduate!” Children at any stage of any serious illness, whether they’re receiving curative treatment or not, can benefit from the expertise of pediatric palliative and hospice care specialists like the caring team members in Delaware Hospice’s Katybug pediatric program. In addition to caring for children from birth through age 21, Katybug also offers prenatal support to families awaiting the birth of a baby diagnosed with a serious condition. Katybug is the only program of its kind in Delaware with Certified Hospice and Palliative Pediatric Nurses on staff. Katybug’s pediatric specialists are experienced in walking alongside children and their families during these tough times, so the family can focus on the joys of life instead the child’s illness. If you know a family who may benefit from our services of: • transitioning from hospital to home • in-patient care and/or respite care • education, assistance, or companionship • symptom management support • coordination with physician • emotional and spiritual support Please visit katybugde.org or call 800.838.9800 to learn more about Katybug.
Because every moment counts. With our help, you can still see new things together. At Katybug, we believe in making time for life’s special moments. We work to make each day the best it can be, so that you can focus on connecting with the people that matter most.

Why You Should See A Chiropractor For Allergy Relief Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, Ga. for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, Fla., where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.
In the industrialized world, a growing number of individuals are affected by allergies. Currently, the numbers are between 10-30 percent of the total population and are increasing steadily. For Americans who suffer from nasal and seasonal allergies, the costs very quickly add up. It is currently estimated that between doctor visits, prescriptions, and time missed from work, these allergies cost in excess of 3 billion each year. Of course, with Spring just around the corner, the familiar sneezing and itchy, watery eyes can be expected to come out in full force. For allergy sufferers, the welcome break from winter is not entirely pleasant. Seasonal or not, all allergies are the result of an exaggerated response by the immune system to substances that it recognizes as foreign. In allergic persons, the immune system produces a specific antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) in response to pollen, pet dander, foods, dust, and other matters which then produces the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Of course, there are medications to help control the allergic response and provide relief from symptoms. There are even medications that will be lifesaving in the event of severe allergic reactions. However, in addition to treating symptoms, there are other steps which can be taken to boost the immune system and lessen allergic reactions.
14 I Spring 2020
HOW CAN A CHIROPRACTOR HELP WITH ALLERGIES? The strength of both the immune and respiratory systems depends largely on proper communication between the brain and spinal cord to control and coordinate their functions properly. When there are interruptions in this communication such as misalignments of the neck, immunity may be compromised. This upper cervical joint irritation can exaggerate or even produce allergic and asthmatic symptoms. Through manipulation of the joints and soft tissue either through traditional chiropractic adjustment or spinal decompression, a chiropractor can help restore alignment and open the necessary pathways of communication between the brain and spine. In addition to promoting a stronger immune system, adjustments may also help regulate the rush of histamine and amount of cortisol produced during high allergy season. The majority of allergies involve release of inflammatory producing substances such as histamine. Adequate production of cortisol, an anti-inflammatory hormone produced by the adrenal gland is necessary to combat this. Understandably, many allergy sufferers are also found to have weak adrenal gland function. What many do not realize is that the adrenal gland is fed directly by the T9 spinal level nerve root, meaning once again, that spinal misalignments can greatly impact allergic reactions.
Dr. Sheila Burek Dr. Sheila Burek is a Buffalo, N.Y. native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.
By helping to maintain balance and regulation of important allergyfighting hormones, a chiropractor can help allergy sufferers find relief and lessen reliance on antihistamines. Along with spinal adjustments, chiropractors typically offer helpful lifestyle and nutritional advice to patients based on their specific needs. Chiropractic is a holistic method of medicine which recognizes that the human body is healthier and functions at a higher level when all aspects of health are considered, including physical, nutritional, and environmental. For allergy sufferers, certain foods and environmental factors may improve
or worsen their symptoms. A chiropractor can help you determine lifestyle and dietary changes that may serve to lessen allergy symptoms and improve overall comfort and health. If you are among the millions of Americans who suffer from a wide range of allergies, there may be a solution to help minimize your symptoms. A chiropractor can help identify any underlying neck or back misalignments which may be compromising your immune system. Furthermore, they can help you determine best practices and eating habits to help keep allergic reactions at bay.
Testimonial As a long time patient of Dr. Shella Burek I give her only the highest marks. She is a top notch professional in her field and a very sensitive and dedicated person. She has helped me tremendously in reducing the pain in my back and neck and in teaching me how to manage it. - Barbara Barskj-Carrow, Ph.D.

Get Ready for Summer and Lift Unwanted Pigment Now treatments. What you will see after your IPL treatment is the unwanted pigment begin to darken and come to the surface of your skin. This pigment will be exfoliated naturally by your skin over the course of the next week. It is our goal that you be pigment free by the end of week, though other body parts, such as the chest and hands, may take longer for all the unwanted pigment to come to the surface and naturally exfoliate.
Before Photofacial
Post 1 IPL Treatment
What Does An IPL Treatment Do? A photofacial treatment addresses unwanted skin pigment, known as sun spots, age spots, or liver spots, pigment that can occur on the face, neck, chest, hands and really anywhere there is excessive sun exposure. And now NEW at Renove, we can also address the unwanted hormonal pigmentary changes known as melasma. Melasma is a deeper much more stubborn kind of pigment that is caused by fluctuations in hormone levels that can occur during or after pregnancy, menopause and with birth control pills. Men can also have these pigmentary changes.
What Can I Expect During A Photofacial Treatment? When you come in for your photofacial treatment, your skin will be gently cleaned to remove any makeup and we will apply a cooling gel to the area to be treated. This gel helps the light from the IPL penetrate into your skin and to help keep your skin cool during the treatment. Then the IPL handpiece will be applied to the skin, and you will see a bright flash of light, like a camera flash, and feel a very brief pulse of heat. This will be repeated about 20 flashes for a full facial treatment, which takes no more than fifteen minutes from start to finish. We will remove the cooling gel and apply a zinc based sunscreen for your trip home.
What Is A Photofacial Treatment? A photofacial or IPL treatment is not a laser, it uses light in the visible spectrum, with numerous simultaneous wavelengths of light, from red light to blue light and the wavelengths in between. This light is applied to the area to be treated with brief pulses of light, similar to a camera flash. With our NEW IPL addition, we have the ability to treat much deeper and more stubborn pigment, with less discomfort during and after the treatment. If you have had an IPL treatment with us before, you will be very pleased with the level of comfort with our new IPL wavelength.
What Can I Expect After My IPL Treatment? Immediately following an IPL treatment, you will feel like you have a sunburn for about an hour. The evening after your IPL treatment, the treated areas will be more sensitive to heat, such as hot water, so I recommend cool facial washes and avoid a hot shower that evening to the treated skin only. By the next day, your skin will feel completely normal, and you may resume all prescription skin care
The County Woman’s Journal
How Long Do The Results Last? Following your IPL treatment, unwanted skin pigment will be completely eliminated. Stubborn melasma may take more than one treatment, especially if you have darker skin tones, as we must use more gentle settings when there is more natural pigment in the skin. The change and improvement in
overall complexion with removal of abnormal pigment is DRAMATIC! Results of the IPL are long lasting, and would be permanent without any further sun expsure, which of course is impossible, which is why we will recommend DAILY zinc or titanium based sunscreen. Mention This Article for Discounted Pricing on Photofacial We have found that winter months are a great time of year to benefit from this fantastic treatment to address and eliminate unwanted skin pigment from sun exposure. BenchMark Physical Therapy debuts in Delaware For its first outpatient clinic in The First State, BenchMark Physical Therapy chose Millsboro. spending time with his wife and two dogs.
Ryan Grube, Ryan Tezak and Tom Gottstein
It’s little wonder that BenchMark, one of the fastest-growing physical therapy providers in the United States, would be drawn to Sussex, the fastest-growing county in Delaware. But it didn’t happen overnight, noted Shane Bronson, a BenchMark regional vice president. “In fact, this has been three years in the making,” he said, citing the desire to put the right staff together among the reasons. The Millsboro clinic, at 30166 Commerce Drive, near BJ’s Wholesale Club, opened in September. Appointments are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
patient care (BenchMark’s outcomes exceed national standards), and nurturing the professional development of its staff. An example of the latter: Ryan Grube, who is BenchMark’s area director for Delaware. In addition to earning an advanced master of science degree in physical therapy from Thomas Jefferson University, Grube has taken more than 50 specialization courses in sports medicine, injury prevention, spine and orthopedic rehabilitation, and athletic development. He oversees the Millsboro staff, which is led by clinic director Ryan Tezak, and fellow physical therapist Tom Gottstein, each of whom has relocated to Lewes.
Starting with a lone clinic in Tennessee in 1995, BenchMark has grown to more than 300 locations across the United States.
A native of Hershey, Pa., Tezak earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from West Virginia University, where he was a member of the baseball team. He later graduated from Clarkson University with a doctor of physical therapy degree.

“When I arrived at benchmark, I was in severe pain and walking very poorly. I was not thinking I would get much improvement simply with therapy! Ryan worked with me over the next several weeks, and I am happy to say that today I am walking with minimal to no pain at all. I feel like I have my life back again! I know that sometime in the future I will most likely need surgery, but I realize now that I have pushed that much farther into the future by just following his advice and exercise the way he has taught me. I feel like this was the best decision I ever made going into those doors. Ryan and Tiffani are absolutely the best people ever to work with and I would highly recommend them to anyone with a pain or ambulation issue!!” - Janet F, Selbyville, DE

Ending Dorethea’s years of pain Dorethea Parker Forrester had dealt with chronic back pain for years, after being hit from behind in a 2016 car accident. Basic tasks such as taking a shower or standing at the stove to cook a meal caused excruciating pain in the 57-year-old’s back and down her legs. She had spondylolisthesis, commonly known as a slip, where one of the bones in the spine, slips forward or backward. After various treatment options, including a previous back surgery, she continued to battle pain. “Thinking I’d always be in this much pain was scary and depressing. I didn’t want to be on pain medication — I just wanted to be fixed,” she said.
Having been referred to Bayhealth Neurosurgeon James Mills, MD, she was determined to pursue another option. This coincided with the arrival of ExcelsiusGPS®, a new robotic spine surgery system, at Bayhealth Kent Campus. With navigation and robotics combined in one technology, ExcelsiusGPS is revolutionizing surgical treatment of back pain worldwide. It collects medical images which the surgeon uses, along with GPS-mapping similar to a car’s GPS navigation, to follow a precise pathway in implanting screws in the spine with a robotic arm. Bayhealth is the first facility in Delaware to offer this robotic approach to spine surgery. “A spinal fusion procedure with the robot was an excellent option for Dorethea,” said Dr. Mills. “ExcelsiusGPS allows us to do a 3D reconstruction of the body and plan out exact pathways for the incision and screws, then place the hardware with near-perfect precision and avoid the tissue of previous surgery sites.” Compared to traditional back surgeries, minimally invasive spine operations with ExcelsiusGPS are safer, with reduced risk for infection or complications. Surgeons separate the muscles surrounding the spine rather than cut through them, so additional
benefits are smaller incisions, less tissue damage and scarring, and speedier recovery. This method is ideal for those who’ve had surgery before, or with degenerative conditions, deformities or trauma of the spine. Medical Director for Bayhealth Neurosurgery Dawn Tartaglione, DO, FACOS, and Neurosurgeon Amit Goyal, MD, also perform robotic surgery, and offer patient consultations at clinics in both Dover and Lewes. Parker Forrester was only the second Bayhealth patient to undergo robotic spine surgery, but had complete trust in the team. “Dr. Mills took his time listening to me and explaining everything. He showed me all the things it means to be a wonderful doctor.” Bayhealth’s pre-operative spine class also helps patients prepare for surgery and recovery. After a successful operation, she was able to go home the next day. Robotic spine surgery patients typically can resume normal activity in a matter of weeks, whereas open spine surgery can require longer hospitalization and recovery time, said Dr. Mills. Parker Forrester didn’t need any physical therapy afterwards and said she feels great, even after returning to her job as a production worker for a large local factory where she’s constantly on her feet and moving. “It’s such a big difference to not have chronic pain anymore. The surgery worked perfectly and everyone at Bayhealth took such good care of me — they’re the best,” she said. Being able to do simple things independently again, like household chores, or enjoying family time pain-free is the biggest thrill for her. “Dr. Mills is a Godsent. He and his team gave me my life back and I’m so grateful.”

I have smoker’s lines but I don’t smoke! Are you frustrated about having “smoker’s” lines around your lips and you’ve never smoked? You are not alone! This is a common complaint of a lot of people, having those pesky vertical creases around your lips that appear when we pucker, use a straw or just speak! And with time and continued motion of our mouths, these creases can become permanently etched in our skin. You don’t have to smoke to have smokers lip lines Of course smoking makes these creases worse, but it is not the only cause of “smoker’s” lip lines. The cause of these lip lines is due to thinning of the skin around our mouths and losing the strength of the natural white roll of the lip border, where the lip transitions from the pink color of the lip to the normal facial skin. It is this natural white roll that forms the transition or border between the actual lip and the skin surrounding the lip, where lip liner would be drawn. This white roll border is what usually prevents applied lipstick from bleeding or smudging away from the lip itself onto the surround skin. If you were to observe a child’s lip, this natural white roll of the lip border is typically present and can be felt as a soft firmness that defines the border of the lip. Lip lines and creases are also caused by the daily use of the mouth in everyday speaking. The facial expressions with using everyday speech causes the mouth to crease in the same areas repeatedly and over time, the creases become permanent. So what can we do to address this pesky concern of lip lines? Thankfully, we have several options! The first problem issue I like to address when treating these lines, is to restore the strength of the natural white roll that has been lost. This is done by adding a hyaluronic acid filler directly into the white roll. By rebuilding and strengthening this natural border between the lip and the surrounding facial skin, the lips cannot collapse as easily like an accordion and form lip lines and creases, when we are speaking, eating or making other mouth motions. Hyaluronic acids that are typically used in this area of the lip include brand name fillers like Restylane and Juvederm. https://www.renovemedspa.org/lipfillers Lip fillers can strengthen lip borders These fillers are specifically designed to match natural lip softness and flexibility while providing moisture and strength. On average and for most people, hyaluronic acids injected into the lips last from 6 to 9 months. It is also possible extend the length of time hyaluronic acid lip fillers last by adding a topical product that prevents the normal breakdown and reuptake of the filler over time by the body. Natural hyaluronidase found in our skin normally, breaks down the hyaluronic acid found in lip fillers as well as the natural hyaluronic acid normally found in our skin. Hyaluronic acid in our skin binds water in the skin. With more hyaluronidase, that break down hyaluronic acid, we lose moisture in our skin and lips with age. The product HA5 blocks the formation of hyaluronidase, so it increases the natural hyaluronic acid in our skin, thereby allowing more natural moisture in our skin and lips and extending the duration of injected hyaluronic acid lips filler! https://renovemedspa.brilliantconnections.com/ Using Botox can soften lip lines Another, easy fix, to address lip lines is to add Botox. Botox relaxes muscles. By relaxing the muscles around the mouth, it is possible to diminish the appearance of lip lines, expecially when speaking or puckering, such as when blowing a kiss. When you have botox injected around the mouth, of course maintaining function of the mouth is important. Such a small amount is injected so that you will still be able to speak, eat, smile normally! You will still be able to use a straw, whistle and kiss. You will likely not be able to more forcefully pucker, so that you will not be able to eat peanut butter off a spoon for example, or spit very well! But overall, even with these limitation, the results that we can get by using about 5 units of Botox, is well worth it to diminish lip lines. https://www.renovemedspa.org/botox .
18 I Spring 2020
Repair collagen damage with Bellafill Another way to more permanently improve lips creases is to injected a collagen stimulator, such as Bellafill, to the skin around the lips, exactly where the lip creases are. With injection of Bellafill, you will see a smoothing of the lip lines right away, but also continued improvement over the next 8 weeks as new collagen is laid down and damaged collagen around the lips is remodeled, softening lips creases, for years to come afterwards. We can also stimulate collagen repair and remodeling of the skin around the lips with a platelet rich plasma (PRP) application by microneedling. PRP utilizes the powerful healing properties of the natural growth factors already in our blood and applying these healing growth factors directly into damaged skin to promote rapid healing and smoothing of the skin. https://www.renovemedspa.org/bellafill . Laser treatments for lip lines Finally, another modality to permanently smooth the wrinkles found around the top lip in particular, is a laser resurfacing treatment. Laser resurfacing is a deep ablative treatments where the skin is ablated, or heated up in a controlled manner, and planed down to a depth where there are no wrinkles. The downtime for these treatment is fairly long, needing to apply Vaseline to the treated skin for at least 7 days, with another 4 weeks of noticeable redness, which can be covered up with makeup. Though the recovery is longer that all other skin treatments, the results are also the most dramatic and are the longest lasting and are considered permanent. https://www.renovemedspa.org/microlaser-peel . Call to make a free consultation with Dr. Parsons These are the current best options for improving stubborn and annoying lip lines that cause our appearance to look older than we would like. I hope some of these options appeal to you and that you are able to take advantage of these effective treatments. The Law of Attraction Improve Your Life by combining the Law of Attraction and Psychotherapy As a nationally certified Hypnotherapist, Emotional Freedom Techniques Practitioner, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Personal Development Coach I treat people suffering from obesity, grief, depression, insomnia, anxiety, trauma, family relationship issues, and substance use disorders. My patients are every day, ordinary, professionals, students, retired and business people who want to improve the quality of their lives. Many have tried traditional therapy in the past, but continue to have the same recurring automatic negative thoughts (ants), limiting beliefs and unwanted behaviors dominating their lives. When the law of attraction and clinical psychotherapy are used together it’s like combining spiritual universal truth consciousness with scientific therapy models to produce optimal results.
What is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction or the law of vibration is one of the seven universal laws. It is an emotional state of being or a vibration that a person creates by mentally focusing, feeling, imagining and creating a mental scene of her desired outcome. The Law of Attraction is a spiritual practice that supersedes daydreaming or visualization. It goes beyond faith as the person knows that her desired outcome is already achieved even though tangible evidence may not be visible to the naked eye.
thoughts and emotions which is what produces the change. By using the Law of attraction with psychotherapy, people reach their goals much faster because the subconscious mind now has new data, memories, and images to help the person respond in different ways to produce different results.
same results. Once she recognizes her negative thought patterns and emotions and identifies her new desired outcome, I then teach her how to use this new data (awareness) and the law of attraction to impress upon her subconscious mind something new so that she can produce her desired outcomes.
How does combining Psychotherapy with the Law of Attraction work?
Psychotherapy will help her recognize psychological, physiological, verbal, emotional and behavioral patterns while the Law of Attraction will help her change them.
During the initial intake session, I thoroughly review my patient’s biopsychosocial history looking for patterns of behaviors, scripts, limiting beliefs, recurring themes and the words and nonverbal cues that she uses. I review her goals and objectives and any barriers or cognitive distortions that may be keeping her stuck. I use motivational interviewing techniques, a subjective unit of distress scale (SUD) and the stages of change model to assess her desire to change. During subsequent sessions, I teach her how to recognize and challenge her two dominant ego states (inner critic/out of control emotions). I then show her how if left unchecked, these two ego states like a recording, play over and over again throughout her life yielding the
The Law of Attraction helps the person bypass the conscious mind to enter into her subconscious mind by using her five senses and imagination to create a heightened sense of awareness and focus. The subconscious mind only knows what’s happening in the present moment so by holding an image/scene in one’s subconscious mind through the use of the imagination, the person begins to reprint and record new images and outcomes in her mind. Since the subconscious does not know the difference between something real or imagined every new image and corresponding emotion that goes into the subconscious produces new imprints and recording to create new

Throughout history, men and women have used the law of attraction to change their lives. Here are a few quotes from some of my favorite people who understood how to use this universal law to not only change their lives but to impact the lives of countless others. “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, and then you believe it to be true. Every dream could be realized by those self-disciplined enough to believe it.”—Neville Goddard “Your life right now is a reflection of your past thoughts. That includes all the great things and all the things you consider not
so great. Since you attract to you what you think about most, it is easy to see what your dominant thoughts have been on every subject of your life, because that is what you have experienced. Until now!” Rhonda Byrne, The Secret “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” - Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich “When you expect the best, you release a magnetic force in your mind which by a law of attraction tends to bring the best to you.”- Norman Vincent Peale, The Power of Positive Thinking “Therefore, I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.”— Jesus Mark 11:24 NKJV “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”—Wayne Dyer To see if combining the law of attraction with psychotherapy is right for you, visit my website at renewyourheartandmind.net to schedule your free consultation.

Yes, It’s Very Difficult to Lose Weight . . . By Nadiv Shapira, MD, FAC, FACPh
That’s Why We Have SmartLipo! “No matter how much I diet and exercise, I cannot get rid of this!” I hear this lament day in and day out from people pinching a pocket of fat on their bodies when they come to our Med Spa for a consult. When they hear me reply that we CAN get rid of that stubborn fat with a one-time, mini-invasive procedure called SmartLipo, they practically hug me. Before learning about this new, superior solution to fat removal, they were worried that they would have to go through a traditional surgical Liposuction or a painful Tummy Tuck. We use a laser technology called, SmartLipo Triplex™ to remove unwanted fat and tighten skin. Under local anesthesia, we will insert a tiny cannula into the area. The energy from the laser canula will liquefy the fat and then, with a different laser energy, your skin will be tightened. This is done in our office in just a few hours. You will rest at home for a day or two and you will be back to your normal routine in a few days! Temporary tenderness, bruising and swelling is normal and usually lasts for only a few days to a week or two. No other fat removal procedure can tighten the skin that remains after liposuction. Therefore, patients have much smoother and better results than traditional liposuction. Another benefit is that there is no limit to the amount of fat that can be removed.

Results You Want! Results from SmartLipo Triplex are immediate and permanent and continue to improve for six months to a year. As the skin is tightened by the laser treatment there is also an increase in collagen production, the protein in your body that begins to subside after age 25. Therefore, regardless of age, you will see a significant reduction in skin laxity or looseness.

Addressing The Fires Of Inflammation Functional Medicine Inflammation is the key in the rising epidemic of autoimmune disease, depression, and asthma.
By Dr. Cynthia Crosser
I
nflammation is our body’s innate mechanism to defend itself against negative stimuli such as pathogens, trauma, environmental toxins, and damaged cells. It is a physical response to emotional stress as well. The Latin terminology handed down from Celsus described the key features as: rubor (redness), calor (heat), tumor (swelling), and dolor (pain). All of these, except pain, describe the role of the vasculature. There is increased blood flow, vasodilatation, and increased vascular permeability. Inflammation can be acute such as with a laceration. Or it can become a systemic, chronic condition with a domino effect of chemical, hormonal, emotional and/or physical triggers. These could be found in foods, the environment, and even stress. When this inflammation continues, the immune system will start to attack healthy tissue resulting in illness and disease. Symptoms could be anything from gut issues, headaches, joint pain, to fatigue and weight gain. In joints it causes arthritis, in the inner blood vessels, heart disease and stroke. For the thyroid, inflammation can cause Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. As the immune system becomes weakened, cancer cells can become undetected and grow.
Testing would involve hsCRP (C-reactive protein) which is produced in the liver in response to infections and inflammation. IL-6 (interleukin 6) and ESR are other indicators of inflammation. Toxic metal testing, comprehensive stool analysis and organic acid testing will also detect systemic inflammation. Genetic testing can determine potential links to systemic inflammation. Even if you have normal CRP and then only sleep 4-5 hours a night for a few weeks, your level will elevate. If you are diabetic, due to the glycating effect of blood sugar, you will experience the effects of systemic inflammation. Candida overgrowth will cause inflammation as well as a stressful lifestyle.
with healthier choices, will assist in staving off the epidemic of chronic disease that is erroneously considered the aging process. Even a good detoxification program involving the liver will help (which will be my next article)!!! I also do a simple weight loss program which will help reduce inflammation. Put out the fire and get healthy!
NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and aspirin are not ideal. A recent study of 440,000 people found that these would increase the risk of heart attack and stroke deaths by 35 percent. What NOT to eat: forget the white starchy stuff, keep whole organic grains to a minimum, and avoid gluten. Eat a variety of vegetables (non-GMO and organic). Eat a moderate amount of fruit, especially berries, highquality fats and fatty fruits such as avocados, nuts and seeds, and high-quality proteins like fish, grass-fed beef, and organic poultry.

ITN Southern Delaware – Volunteers Go the Extra Mile Submitted by: Janis P. Hanwell. Ed. D., ITN Southern Delaware Board Member
Seniors need transportation in Southern Delaware Just think about all the places you drive to regularly… to work, doctor’s appointments, the bank, grocery store or to meet friends for coffee, to church, family events, maybe even to a gallery opening or a movie. If you turned in your car keys today, wouldn’t you still want to be able to do all these things and more? Could you count on family or friends to drive you, or would you feel like you were imposing? While everyone ages differently, many adults between the ages of 65 and 72 begin to limit their driving or stop altogether due to age related conditions such as low vision, slowed response time, or an extended or severe illness. While public transportation companies work to expand and improve services for this “boom”ing population, many older adults still have limited or no access

to them. That is why ITN is so committed to providing a reliable and affordable solution that helps keep our roads safer, aids in improving quality of life for older adults, and gives family members peace of mind. Amazing volunteers make ITN second to none To help as many older adults as possible, ITN relies on dedicated and compassionate volunteers. ITN’s outstanding drivers, dispatchers, and support staff are all devoted, caring individuals with a commitment to give back to their community. ITN volunteers always “Go the Extra Mile” by providing arm-through-arm, doorthrough-door services and making riders feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. From scheduling rides, to assigning drivers, to working with riders who may need scholarship funds to pay for rides, you will not find an ITN volunteer who is less than a G.E.M.
Volunteer Spotlights
Joseph Savona, Volunteer Driver When Joe arrived to pick up John and his wife, John had just taken a spill in the grocery store parking lot when his cart hit a crack in the pavement. Joe immediately made sure John was safe, called 9-1-1, loaded the groceries in the car and drove John’s wife behind the ambulance to the hospital. He went into the hospital waiting area and helped John’s wife call her son who lived about an hour away to let him know what had happened. Once Joe knew their son
was on the way, he took the groceries back to the couple’s home and put the cold items away. If that wasn’t enough, he then drove back to the hospital and stayed until their son arrived. When Joe received recognition for going above and beyond, he said, “I just did what anybody else would do!” Joseph Feichtl, Volunteer Driver and ITN Board Member Joe was recently recognized as ITN Southern Delaware’s 2019 Volunteer of the Year and went on to receive ITN America’s 2020 national award because of his tireless efforts, extraordinary customer relations, and continued dedication to ITN’s mission. He is genuinely interested in each individual he drives, keeping in touch with many and helping with errands like picking up
mail, dropping off glasses to be repaired, or fixing a door knob. Riders love his friendly interaction and caring nature and they often call the office to sing his praises and request him as their driver. In 4½ years, Joe has provided nearly 2000 rides, led new driver orientations, and served hundreds of riders; having had an enormous effect on the lives of each one. He voluntarily looks after the ITN fleet cars, often paying for regular maintenance out of pocket and declining reimbursement. Joe also donates many hundreds of his own mileage credits back to ITN each year to help members who have difficulty paying for rides. Joe says he feels that service to others is a blessing to himself. But rest assured, Joe is the real blessing!
Janis Hanwell, ITN Board Member, presents Joe Feichtl with ITN America’s 2020 national Max Israelite Volunteer of the Year Award, Be a G.E.M. Volunteering with ITN only requires time around your own schedule and a desire to do something meaningful in your community. You select the rides you want to take, the radius you want to travel, and the time you want to give. It is good for your mind and body, and brings fun and fulfillment to your life. Improve quality of life for others and you will surely improve your own by Going the Extra Mile!

Health & Wellness M. Lisa Attebery, DO, FACOS, is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in breast surgery oncology.
She is driven by the connections she builds with patients and the intellectual challenge that comes with treating cancer. Meeting people at what are often the most vulnerable and fearful times of their lives, Dr. Attebery’s caring style and ability to provide the most advanced treatment tailored to the individual helps patients feel comfortable, safe and confident in her care. She had a private practice in Pennsylvania and was an associate professor at two medical colleges. She was proud to have been the first surgeon in the Philadelphia area to perform a nipple-sparing mastectomy, which has now become the norm. Recognizing the growing population and need for breast care in her neighboring state, she relocated here in Delaware and is the only fellowship trained breast surgeon in Delaware. Her clinical interests include molecular mapping and treating breast cancers at the gene level, which means no one-size-fits-all method. Her approach is to determine individualized cancer treatments based on the unique qualities of each cancer and a person’s genetic makeup. In her spare time, Dr. Attebery volunteers with the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition locally and serves as an examiner for the General Surgery oral and written boards for fellow surgeons hoping to become board-certified. She is an avid runner and triathlete, as well as an art enthusiast with a love of drawing.
Dr. Attebery Brings Advanced Breast Cancer Care and Surgery To Delaware By M. Lisa Attebery, DO, FACOS Breast Surgical Oncologist Board Certified General Surgeon As the only fellowship trained breast surgeon in Delaware and a breast surgical oncologist, I am always asked, “What should I do if I find a lump? How is cancer diagnosed? What is new in the treatment of breast cancer? What kind of surgery will I need?” The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is always evolving. There are many new advances, and more are coming. It is a very exciting time in the field. STATISTICS Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. In 2019, there will be an estimated 3.5 million breast cancer survivors. 268,600 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 2930 men will be diagnosed. Of these, 42,260 women and 500 men will die from the disease. Here in Delaware, breast cancer ranks as the leading cancer diagnosis in women. Thankfully, the cancer death rates have decreased with advances in diagnosis, treatment and education. GENETICS & RISKS 60-80% of breast cancers are sporadic or random. 10-15% are familial, meaning some family history is present and only 5-10% involve genetic abnormalities. So, who should be tested? Anyone diagnosed with breast cancer that is less than 50 years of age, if you are diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer (in both breasts), if you are a male with breast cancer and anyone diagnosed who has an Ashkenazi Jewish background. Multiple risk factors have been identified, such as
being female, increasing age and race. Caucasians have the highest risk of developing breast cancer. Next is African American, Asian and then Hispanic. Estrogen exposure whether from medicine, bio-identical hormones or foods (soy), obesity, excessive alcohol use, personal history of breast cancer and radiation exposure on the chest also increase your risk. DETECTION Women should start having a 2D or 3D mammogram at the age of forty. If you have a family history, you should have a baseline mammogram at 35 years of age. An Ultrasound is a used for palpable masses and to aid in identifying lesions on a mammogram. An MRI is indicated for certain types of dense breasts, a new breast cancer diagnosis and to evaluate implants or lesions not well seen on mammograms. A breast MRI or Ultrasound are not generally used as screening tests. BIOPSIES Biopsies are usually performed at the hospital but can sometimes be performed in the doctor’s office. An ultrasound, mammogram or MRI can be used to assist obtaining the tissue. It depends on what test clearly identifies the lesion. The average time from abnormal mammogram to a biopsy should be 48-72 hours. SURGERY There are two options for surgery. One is breast conserving, called a lumpectomy. A lumpectomy is just what it sounds like. The doctor removes a lump or the cancer from the breast while preserving the majority of the breast. The second is a mastectomy, which removes
The County Woman’s Journal
anywhere between 92-98% of the breast tissue. A lumpectomy is most often followed by radiation which helps prevent the cancer from returning. In fact, a lumpectomy with radiation is EQUAL to a mastectomy in terms of survival. The real benefit for a mastectomy is risk reduction and personal choice. Most mastectomies can be completed with the preservation of the nipple and reconstruction can be started immediately. NEW TECHNOLOGY Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer are happening quickly. Ultrasound guided breast biopsies can be performed right in the office with a new tool called the Mammotome. This probe device can extract tissue samples that are then sent to the lab for testing. After the tissue is removed, a Magseed is placed at the site of the biopsy. The Magseed is a tiny, radiation-free magnetic seed that is detected by the Sentimag. The Sentimag then uses magnetic signals to accurately pinpoint the Magseed, showing the doctor where the lump or cancer is located. The Sentimag is used in the operating room when the patient is asleep. The placement of the Magseed avoids the uncomfortable and painful placement of a wire in the breast prior to surgery while the patient is still awake and shortens the time needed at the hospital for the surgery. Prior to surgery, Magtrace is injected into the breast so the lymph nodes can be identified. Magtrace is a dark brown liquid of organically coated iron oxide particles. It avoids the need for nuclear medicine and the subsequent unnecessary exposure to
radioactive material to the patient and staff. Dr. Attebery is the first surgeon on the East Coast to use this advanced technology. YOUR CANCER DIAGNOSIS An important tool in diagnosing and treating breast cancer is doing a tumor genomic assay or test. These tests analyze a sample of the cancer tumor to see how active certain genes are. This activity affects the behavior of the cancer. The Oncotype DX test is used to estimate a person’s risk of
recurrence and/or the risk of cancer developing again in the same breast. Depending on what type of cancer it is, this test can also tell how likely a patient is to benefit from radiation or chemotherapy. Of the genomic tests used on breast cancer, the Oncotype DX test has the most thorough data supporting its use to make treatment decisions. Because of this strong research, the Oncotype DX test is the most common test used in the United States to make treatment decisions.

Gum Regeneration No Scalpel & No Sutures By Dr. Stewart Perim, D.M.D., M.S.
What is gum recession? Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gum line. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when it comes to brushing the teeth. Why should gum recession be taken seriously? When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomesexposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gum line and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness.
comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Pinhole Surgical Technique. How is Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) performed? During the Pinhole Surgical Technique, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gum line to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. John Chao is the inventor of the Pinhole Surgical Technique
and has designed a special set of instruments to perform “periodontal minimal invasive techniques”. He is world renowned and trains dentists to utilize his instruments for Pinhole procedures. Dr. Stewart Perim, a graduate of his program, is working with Dr. Chao to utilize the Pinhole technique for bone grafting and accelerated osteogenesis. This will improve periodontal and orthodontic outcomes (growing bone and gum).
The benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique are many:
• Less discomfort for the patient after treatment • Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting • No need for uncomfortable sutures • No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools • No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate
What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) ? The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is scalpel and suture free. Traditional gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue or soft tissue grafts in order to rebuild the gum line. This soft tissue would be sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it healed. While this traditional grafting treatment is effective,

Love (And Easterseals) Can Keep Us Together By Natalie Scott Love is not just words said on your wedding day, but how one lives those words out each day. Love is shown in health, but especially in sickness. Emory and Otisia “Tish” did not know 37 years ago when they said those words “in sickness and in health” that sickness would come sooner than they thought. Though caregiving for Tish, who had her first stroke at 45, has not come without trials, it is Emory’s great attitude, support from family and a team of caring professionals at an Easterseals Adult Day program, that has really made a huge impact in how they continue to live their lives. “I don’t think I knew what love was until Tish got sick. I had no idea I could handle it. I have to help her with everything,” Emory says. “Easterseals has been a lifesaver. The staff takes great care of her. I know it’s their job but they don’t treat it like a job. You can see they really care. I am so overwhelmingly grateful. She is well taken care of and safe. I know all of her needs will be addressed.” Easterseals adult day services enable Emory to continue to care for Tish at home. It gives him the break he needs to re-energize, take care of his needs, and run errands. Tish attends the program five days a week and enjoys painting, ball toss and parachute exercises. She also enjoys the camaraderie felt amongst the participants and staff in the program. “As long as I can take care of her, I will take care of her here at home and thanks to Easterseals I can do that. Our life is not stress free but it is peaceful,” Emory says. “While she is at Easterseals I don’t have to be on guard. I can relax, take a nap to catch up on sleep, go shopping or make dinner. I know Easterseals is great for her and truly great for me.”
arranging appointments. The nurse acts as a liaison between participant families, case managers and other health care providers. If needed, physical, occupational and speech therapies also are available on site through Easterseals, and can be added to the individual’s personal care plan. In addition, trained staff are able to help all participants with activities of daily living and personal needs. “A great attitude goes a long way and that is what Emory has. He has a saying he uses often, “If that’s the worst thing that is going to happen today, it is going to be a great day.” Like all Easterseals services, adult day care services are comprehensive and individualized to meet each client’s needs, family-focused to meet each family member’s concerns and have the goal of enhanced independence. The adult day care program offers a break for family caregivers responsible for a relative who is unable to function independently, but does not require 24-hour nursing care. Easterseals Camp Fairlee Gives Confidence that Lasts a Lifetime By Natalie Scott When Donald Pietras was seven, he went to a brand new camp that would forever change his life. Easterseals Camp Fairlee was just opening its doors in 1954 for three weeks of adventure for children with disabilities. For many of the children who entered those doors it would be their first time away from home. For all children that summer, it was an opportunity to experience independence unlike anywhere else.
caught a nine pound striped bass, which, to this day, still holds the record for the largest fish he has ever caught.
The campers those first few years pioneered the way for generations of campers to come. The next year, not only did Don return to Camp Fairlee, he stayed for all six weeks the camp was open. This summer in particular meant a lot to Don.
If you are a caregiver who needs a break from the constant demand of caregiving turn to Camp Fairlee. Give your loved one an unforgettable experience by taking advantage of Camp Fairlee’s week-long-summercamp experiences, weekend respite/retreat program from September through May, Travel Trips for adults throughout the year and Daily Adventures program.
“The best memories of my life came from Camp Fairlee. Although I forget many things now that I am older, I have the most vivid memories of Camp the summer of 1955. I loved every minute of the time I spent there,” Don says. “I would tell parents (today) if you have the chance, send your children to camp. Every child should have the opportunity to experience camp.”
Easterseal’s Camp Fairlee is accredited by The American Camp Association and is located just a few miles outside of Chestertown, Maryland. It is one of the only facilities in the region that provides a typical residential camp experience for children and adults with disabilities year-round. Learn more about Camp Fairlee at www.CampFairlee.com or by calling 410-778-0566.
Recently, Don had the opportunity to visit the camp he had not seen since 1957, a camp he attributes for the great changes in his life. He was excited to see that Camp Fairlee, which only included the historic Manor House and a dining hall when he was at Camp, has been recently expanded and modernized to serve more families with new, modern and fully accessible buildings. Along with a much larger dining hall, a larger pavilion welcoming campers, a new health facility and a new activity center, camp has also added seven new accessible cabins.
Along with Camp Fairlee, Easterseals offers a range of services. Please visit our website to learn more about our services for people of all ages and abilities: www.de.easterseals.com.
“Going to Camp Fairlee changed my life. For the first time, I felt equal. Everyone was in the same boat,” says Don, who experienced physical disabilities due to polio. “Camp changed my outlook on life. I got the confidence from Camp Fairlee that I could do anything. Because of Camp Fairlee I am the man I am today!”
In 1957 Don was named Easterseals ambassador.
“As we were driving in, it brought back a lot of memories,” Don says. “I had tears in my eyes when I saw the Manor House.” These days, Camp Fairlee’s summer sessions are available for both children and adults of varying disabilities, including specialized sessions for those with autism. The summer sessions include a lot of activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, horseback riding, canoeing and so much more. When Don was a camper at Camp Fairlee, his favorite activity was fishing. In fact, in 1955 he

Easterseals is There When Caregiving Gets Tough By Natalie Scott When Frank was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in his 50s, his wife, Evelyn, was overwhelmed. As Frank became more fragile, she needed more help than she ever anticipated. Thankfully, she found Easterseals Community Outreach Program and the many supports for caregivers. Easterseals connected Evelyn with answers and resources to help her navigate the challenges of caregiving. Not only did Easterseals help her find support from other caregivers walking the same path, it also provided respite grants which have allowed her to take a break knowing Frank was in capable hands. “Some days I am so busy taking care of Frank that I forget to even brush my teeth,” Evelyn says with a laugh. “Respite is like heaven. I love it because I can go away and not worry. I am happier when I am able to take a break and it is something I look forward to. I couldn’t survive without it.” Caregiving can be an exhausting job, especially when the caregiver does not get time to recharge. Respite is an option through Easterseals Lifespan Respite Program, which provides funds to support family caregivers providing care to a person of any age or disability. Using the respite grant to pay for Frank’s care, Evelyn was able to go away with her friends to Florida on a trip she dubbed “Grannies Gone Wild.” The group was able to enjoy the beach, the pool, staying in their pajamas all day and eating on their own schedule. She was also able to visit her sister, who she is not able to see often, in Myrtle Beach. During these trips, Evelyn is able to take a break from not only the mental exhaustion, but the physical demands of caregiving.
“I think it is important to see how others are dealing with the same thing as you are. You learn more resources from others,” Evelyn says. “It is great to know you are not alone.” Also housed in Easterseals Resource Center is Assistive Technology, or “tools for independence.” There are hundreds of pieces of assistive technology on display, like pill reminders and smart home devices, which promote independence and quality of life. This gives individuals the opportunity to try out products prior to purchasing. A virtual tour of the Technology Demonstration Center can be found at: https://tinyurl.com/ u4y5bx3. The Caregiver Resource Center and Lifespan Respite programs are partially funded by Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities through the National Family Caregiver Support Program, Title III-E of the Older Americans Act. For more information about any of the services provided through the Community Outreach Program, please contact the Case Manager at 302221-2076 or resources@esdel.org. Visit our site: www.de.easterseals.com.
Evelyn also took advantage of Easterseals Savvy Caregiver series where she met other caregivers living with a similar situation. The Savvy Caregiver series provides knowledge and skills essential to those who are caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

For Children With Peanut Allergies, F.D.A. Experts Recommend A New Treatment Presented By: Alexandra Elizabeth Gallagher By Roni Caryn Rabin, Published in the The New Times Published Sept. 13, 2019 Updated Sept. 23, 2019 About 1.2 million American children have peanut allergies. A new drug, Palforzia, does not cure the condition, but it can blunt lifethreatening reactions. A Food and Drug Administration panel on Friday recommended approval of the first-ever drug to treat life-threatening peanut allergies in children, a condition that confounds and frightens families across the country. The recommendation all but assures the agency will approve the drug, called Palforzia and made by Aimmune Therapeutics. The F.D.A. typically follows the advice of its expert advisory committees. Some panel members expressed reservations about the safety of the drug, since patients receiving treatment experienced more allergic reactions than those given a placebo. There is also little longterm safety data about a treatment that may be lifelong, the critics noted. The drug’s goal is not to cure the allergy, but to reduce the risk that an accidental exposure to small amounts of peanut will set off a lifethreatening reaction. It might also relieve some of the fear and anxiety many families experience as they struggle to cope with a child’s severe peanut allergy. “This is one of the most important unmet needs of medicine,” Dr. James R. Baker Jr., director of the Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center at University of Michigan, told the agency’s advisory committee. He was paid by Aimmune.
30 I Spring 2020
The demand for treatment among patients and their families is enormous, Dr. Baker noted. “Right now the only approved approach to this allergy is to avoid peanuts, and the amount of effort and cost involved in making sure everything your child is exposed to is peanutfree is overwhelming to most families,” he said, adding that even scrupulous efforts to prevent exposures fail, resulting in lifethreatening medical emergencies.
agree to carry epinephrine with them at all times to treat sudden allergic reactions. The agency also will require that the initial doses and increased doses be given at a medical facility capable of treating allergic reactions.
“The quality of life of patients and their caregivers is adversely affected due to fear and anxiety about accidental ingestions,” he added.
The regimen begins with trace amounts of the protein, which are carefully measured and increased incrementally under medical supervision as tolerance develops.
Allergists who treat children with peanut allergies applauded the decision, though they acknowledged the treatment regimen was demanding and not appropriate for everyone. “Until now, patients with lifethreatening peanut allergies had no options but avoidance,” said Dr. Sandra Hong, an allergist at the Cleveland Clinic. Still, “it is an exciting step for patients and their families who live in constant worry about coming in contact with even the slightest amount of peanut.” The new drug is an oral immunotherapy regimen that aims to reduce sensitivity to peanut allergens. It gradually exposes children to small amounts of peanut protein over the course of six months, until they can safely eat the equivalent of two peanuts. The treatment is not always effective and it is accompanied by side effects, including severe allergic reactions to the peanut exposure. One in five children who were treated stopped because of side effects; 14 percent experienced severe allergic reactions, double the percentage in a comparison group receiving a placebo. The F.D.A. will require Aimmune to restrict the drug to patients who
There will be a black-box warning on the package calling attention to the risks of peanut exposure, and Aimmune must warn patients that they still must avoid peanuts.
About 1.2 million American children have a peanut allergy. The allergies are believed to cause more deaths from anaphylaxis — an acute physiological response that includes lowered blood pressure, shock and constriction of the airways — than any other food allergy, though the precise number is not known. Because children generally do not outgrow peanut allergies, they must avoid peanuts, peanut oil and foods contaminated with traces of peanuts for their entire lives. Tessa Grosso, 16, a high school junior from Menlo Park, Calif., told the panel she was allergic to peanuts, dairy and many other foods until she was 10, when she was treated with an early form of oral immunotherapy at Stanford University. Now, she said, she eats just about anything and has peanut butter every morning before school. “Before I was treated, my life was like navigating a minefield,” Ms. Grosso said in an interview. “I couldn’t go to anyone’s house, and a crumb of something on my hands could have killed me. At one point, a glass of milk spilled on my hand and
I went into anaphylactic shock and almost died.” Now, she said, her diet is unremarkable. Though she still avoids shellfish and carries epinephrine to treat an unexpected reaction, “My life changed forever.” She appealed to the committee to recommend approval of the drug. “Every child deserves this therapy that provides freedom, safety and the ability to live without fear of food,” Ms. Grosso said. But several experts at the hearing raised questions about the drug’s long-term safety and effectiveness. Nina Zeldes, a senior fellow at the National Center for Health Research in Washington, pointed out that only one study had examined the drug’s effectiveness. The participants were mostly white, she also noted, so little is known about how children of other backgrounds may respond to treatment. Long-term consequences of exposure to the drug are unknown. “This is the first treatment for peanut allergies, and if this drug is approved despite the unanswered questions, it will set a precedent for future drugs to treat food allergies,” Ms. Zeldes said.
Only 4 percent of the 124 children who had been given a placebo powder were able to consume that amount without a response. Most of the participants were aged 4 to 17, and when they enrolled, all of them suffered from severe peanut allergies triggered by the equivalent of one-third of a peanut or less. The trial, carried out at multiple medical centers, was designed and sponsored by Aimmune, the drug’s developer. The drug itself consists of peanut flour. It is carefully measured and packed into capsules or foil sachets of varying doses that can be easily opened and mixed with food. The starting dose is three milligrams, which is gradually increased to 300 milligrams, the equivalent of one peanut, over a six-month period, followed by six months of maintenance therapy of the same amount. In order to retain their tolerance, patients would need to continue taking the maintenance dose, possibly indefinitely. Several of the treated children developed eosinophilic esophagitis, an inflammatory disease of the esophagus that is triggered by exposure to an allergen.
The group urged the F.D.A. to require additional research data about risks before approving the drug, “because it will be difficult if not impossible to obtain it afterward,” Ms. Zeldes said.
Company officials say that over 1,100 patients have enrolled in the clinical trials, and they continue to follow patients to evaluate the longterm safety and effectiveness of the therapy.
A trial of the new drug published last year in The New England Journal of Medicine found that after a year, two-thirds of the 372 children who received the treatment were able to tolerate at least 600 milligrams of peanut protein — the equivalent of two peanuts — without having an allergic reaction.
In July, the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a nonprofit research organization in Boston that evaluates medical evidence, concluded in a report that there was inadequate evidence to justify the immunotherapy treatment over simply avoiding peanuts.

Growing up in a close family, they were taught the virtues of love, grace, loyalty, and hard work. They were always taught to be accountable to one another, to work first, play later and if it’s worth doing, it is worth doing right. They carry those values into both their personal lives and in the business that they run.
Chris Russell is a recognized leader in the home improvement industry with 23 years experience. He has received multiple national awards including 5 time GAF President’s Club Award recognizing the “elite of the elite” in residential roofing; the Trex PRO Platinum certification, the highest level of recognition a deck builder can receive; and Sunesta Awnings & Outdoor Comfort Bronze Elite Award and Sunesta’s 2019 Dealer of the Year. He and his wife Heather met in high school and have been happily married just over 20 years. Chris has been involved in the community as a coach for Henlopen Soccer, Milton Little League, and Special Olympics Delaware Sussex Riptide for soccer and basketball. He has served as a member and President of the Dewey Beach Lions Club.
After more than fifteen years of Budget Blinds they have acquired a great deal of knowledge about window coverings and running a business in general but they feel that one of their best assets is the desire to learn more and improve along the way. With only 10 full time employees, including the two of them, and one part time, they have nearly 70 years of experience when combined. That is a particular point of pride because they feel it is an indicator of what really makes a good company, which is employees that love what they do. They know that a person who is enjoying their job, will do it better and with more care. That leads to what Chris and Tony feel is their most important skill and that is choosing employees. “If we make sure our employees and our clients are happy, our happiness will always fall right in line.” says Chris. Chris is Married to his wife Julie who is a speech pathologist for a local elementary school and they have 2 boys, Gavin and Parker who are 11 and 9 respectively. He loves just being around his family, reading, golfing and fishing.
In 2018, after 10 years of business in Delmarva owning a company providing the highest quality roofing, siding, windows, doors, decks & patios Chris added The Great Outdoors Sunrooms and Shade Solutions and moved the headquarters from Smyrna to Lewes. After hearing from many customers, it was clear that there was a shortage in professional quality options for homeowners that were looking for awnings, decks, and sunrooms in lower Delaware. Being passionate about quality, Chris researched manufactures nationwide to identify the highest quality products most suitable for our unique climate. Those include Sunesta, who makes the most durable and beautiful retractable awnings; Trex decking, the undisputed leader in low-maintenance decking; and LivingSpace Sunrooms, the most beautiful and most energyefficient sunrooms in America. Customers are refreshing their current home, decorating a new home, some a condo and even those with an apartment. Every customer has a different need. As professionals we listen to our customers needs and wants. We are very fortunate to be on Mr McCahan’s team (owner of Furniture and More) who has the knowledge of the past and the insight of the future. A career in Retail Furniture allows us to be creative every day. It’s important to have a satisfying career but the most important thing is that we have satisfied customers.

Dr. Goldstein is a board-certified gastroenterologist who graduated from Georgetown University for her medical degree and then went on to complete her Internal Medicine residency at North Shore University Hospital and did her Gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of Buffalo. Dr. Goldstein is at the forefront of the pelvic floor field, performing Interstim Peripheral Nerve Evaluation (PNE) for fecal incontinence. “Gastroenterology allows me to stay on the leading edge of medicine, bringing the newest, most effective treatments to patients with serious conditions. As your doctor, I strive to give you the best possible medical care you can receive and also an environment where you can feel comfortable. This starts with talking and listening closely to ensure that I get a complete picture of your medical history and symptoms, and also that you understand what you need to know to follow your treatment plan and return for the follow-up testing you need to protect your health. Giving you my time, compassion and full attention is as important as any test or procedure I perform.”
HEMORRHOIDAL TREATMENT Over half the population will experience some type of hemorrhoidal problem in their lifetime. You may be suffering in silence because you are too embarrassed to discuss the problem, or worry that the cure will be more painful than the problem itself. Now, advances in medicine have made hemorrhoid treatment fast and virtually painless. Your only challenge is finding a doctor who offers the right treatment and makes you feel comfortable receiving it. How do hemorrhoids develop? Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and engorged veins in the anal and rectal region. They are most commonly caused by changes in frequency of bowel movements, pressure of straining and hormonal changes or pressure during pregnancy. The veins swell and stretch and gradually lose the support of surrounding connective tissue. Hemorrhoids can cause the following symptoms: Itching/Burning Bleeding Protrusion during Bowel Movements Pain Hygiene Concerns Are all hemorrhoids the same? Hemorrhoids are actually classified into four stages
based upon severity. This helps determine which treatment is most appropriate for you. 1) Stage I: The hemorrhoids remain inside at all times. They do not protrude from the anus. 2) Stage II: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but reduce spontaneously. 3) Stage III: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but require manual insertion. 4) Stage IV: Fourth degree hemorrhoids: The most severe hemorrhoids always protrude and cannot be pushed back inside.
a variety of minimally invasive procedures that cut off blood flow to the hemorrhoid and cause it to shrink. In some cases your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue.
What are the treatment options for removing hemorrhoids? Effective hemorrhoid treatment depends on your specific medical condition. No doctor should recommend a solution without first doing an exam to rule out other potential causes of rectal pain or bleeding.
During the 60 SECOND procedure, the physician uses a gentle suction device to place a small rubber band around the tissue, just above the hemorrhoid. There are very few nerve endings in this area to cause any pain. The hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within a day or two. Research has shown that 99.8% of patients treated with the CRH O’Regan System ™ have no post-procedure pain and require no pain medication before, during, or after the procedure. There is no bowel prep, and you can drive yourself home afterwards. Another advantage, external hemorrhoids may also improve with this option.
Once you have been diagnosed with hemorrhoids, you will have different options to choose from, depending on the severity of your case. You may get adequate relief from increasing fiber in your diet, taking warm sitz baths and using topical creams. Treatment options include

This new banding option, the CRH O’Regan System ™ is considered the “gold standard” in treatment and almost eliminates the discomfort and recovery time associated with other hemorrhoid removal options.

The AHCA/NCAL’s Quality Initiative program is a multi-year effort to challenge long-term care providers to achieve quantitative results in four areas. Both communities earned recognition for their work in two specific areas: Functional Outcomes and Appropriate Use of Antipsychotics. The focus on functional outcomes is specific to increasing mobility and self-care abilities, helping residents to achieve or maintain a healthy level of independence. The other achievement both communities are being recognized for is limiting the use of antipsychotic medications. These types of medications are often used to manage behaviors displayed in residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

PETS AND DENTAL DISEASE February is National Pet Dental Health month. Dental disease is by far the most common health problem that dogs and cats develop. By the age of three, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some degree of active dental disease. It is also the most under diagnosed disease of companion animals because our pets are unable to communicate their discomfort to us and because pets continue to eat no matter how much disease and pain they are experiencing due to their survival instinct.
The number one thing pet owners can do at home to prevent dental disease is brushing their pet’s teeth to remove the plaque. Plaque is a colorless film that is constantly forming on both human and animal teeth. If it is not removed by brushing within 24 hours, it becomes tartar/calculus that cannot be removed by brushing. In pets, the tartar builds up and begins to accumulate at the gum line. This is how periodontal disease begins. Periodontal disease is inflammation/ infection that develops around the tissues of teeth. As periodontal disease progresses, pet owners usually become aware that there is a problem in the mouth because the breath begins to smell badly and an oral examination by a veterinarian will likely result in recommendation of a professional cleaning. Daily brushing is recommended with three times weekly being the minimum amount recommended. Brushing should be started as soon as possible in the pet’s life. Even
though the baby teeth are going to be replaced by adult teeth, daily brushing helps acclimate the pet to the experience. There are two kinds of brushes-finger brushes and the longer brush which resembles a human toothbrush. The finger brush is good in the beginning, but transitioning to the longer brush will most likely be necessary as the pet grows. DO NOT use human toothpaste as they may contain fluoride in toxic doses, xylitol or a chemical called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which is what makes human toothpaste foam. Even small doses can cause gastrointestinal issues for your pet. There are special toothpastes made for pets that are safe and also tastes like chicken and other flavors pets prefer.
During a professional dental cleaning, pets are sedated, IV catheters placed and the pet is intubated with an endotracheal tube. In addition to providing gas anesthesia to the pet, the tube protects the trachea from any debris that would otherwise go into the lungs during a dental cleaning. From this point, a veterinary cleaning is much like a human dental cleaning. The teeth are first examined and charted to determine the degree of mobility,
gum recession and loss of bone around the teeth. Full mouth dental radiographs are taken to assess the health of the gums and bone beneath the gum line, which is where the majority of dental disease takes place. If there are any teeth that need to be extracted, local blocks are administered and the affected teeth are removed. Finally the teeth are cleaned and polished and the pet wakes up from anesthesia with a healthy mouth free from periodontal disease.
If owners are unable to brush their pet’s teeth, there are a variety of other products that can be helpful. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) evaluates products and their seal can be found on products that have been tested and proven to effective. Chew toys, treats, bones, water additives and even food are available to help keep pet’s teeth healthy. Besides better breath, proper oral hygiene in pets helps increase their lifespans. The mouth is a constant source of bacteria that can damage organs such as the heart and kidneys. Research has shown that professional dental cleaning can actually improve kidney function in cats that have been diagnosed with kidney disease/failure.

PEOPLE LOVE Sasha’s Jewels, LLC! “A few years ago my husband lost his wedding band. After several months of searching for and not finding it we decided to purchase another one. One afternoon while out and about in Fenwick Island we came across Sasha‘s jewely shop. We took our time looking at several rings but nothing was “just right”. After listening to our story of losing the ring Sasha offered to try and locate one with our request specific request of size and style. Surprisingly within just a few days, Sasha called stating that she found a ring! Not only was the ring exactly what we wanted but the price was perfect for our bank account! My husband and I so appreciated Sasha’s quick turn a round in locating a very special ring that will be worn for years to come. We have shopped at Sasha store several times through the years, my husband often surprising me on special occasions with a beautiful bracelet or earrings. Her store also carries a small selection of vintage style clothing and purses. Sasha’s warm personality and professionalism make it easy to shop at her store. Sasha is our go to person whenever we need a special piece of jewelry.” - Misha & Mark, Millsboro “Service was great and very friendly at Sasha’s Jewels! I got my Omega watch repaired and it now runs perfectly and it was over a hundred dollars less than the quote I got in South Carolina.” - Kevin
“Madeleine Sasha worked with me to design and create a locket out of sea glass I collected from Puerto Rico. The sea glass was sentimental and I wanted to make the locket in 14K gold. It was a gift for my daughter. “Madeleine was amazing. She made several suggestions regarding the design, working with me to incorporate my thoughts. Her ideas about placement of the sea glass and shaping of the final design made all the difference. And, her craftsmanship was excellent.!! I couldn’t be more pleased!!!!” - Debra, Ocean City, MD
“Sasha’s Jewels is a true GEM for one stop jewelry shopping, swapping, buying, or creating unique and fabulous finds. It has been my go-to store for finding beautiful , unique jewelry ever since I discovered this delightful treasure trove in Fenwick. Additionally Sasha’s has been my reliable source for getting rid of old, broken and never worn jewelry. I was amazed what it was worth....and more amazed at the possibilities of finding or creating something fabulous and fun in her store. Sasha created a lovely contemporary statement piece for me from a pair of earrings that were my mother’s ... it’s a stunner that turns heads every time I wear it. The possibilities are endless at Sasha’s and I guarantee that there is some sparkly treasure just waiting for you there!” - Cheryl L, Clifton Va. “I met Madeleine at her shop. I had just inherited a large amount of jewelry from my mother that was to go to my daughter per her will. I was overwhelmed with the idea of selling each piece. Madeleine came to my home where I had the pieces laid out in preparation for a yardsale. Madeleine spent hours looking through the pieces and evaluating the value of each one. She even found some things I wasn’t aware were gold. She offered me what I thought was a good price for the lot and I was so relieved that I did not have the pressure of trying sell them all individually myself. She performed the same service for my sister who also had a large amount of jewelry to sell. We were both pleased and impressed with Madeline’s professionalism and willingness to accommodate us.” - Luanne, Kansas “I’ve been a regular customer of Madeleine’s for several years because she is trustworthy, fair and kind. She always gives the best prices for her products, and when she bought silver or gold from me, she always gave me more money than anyone else was willing to give.” She is a gem!” - Phyllis M., Eastern Shore, MD “I met with Madeleine to show her the jewelry my mom had left to me. She was very friendly and professional. She examined each piece thoroughly and handled it with care. She offered me a very fair price. I would certainly do business with her again in the future.” - Gail, Bronx, NY “Madeleine stopped by my yard sale a few years ago. I had several pieces of jewelry for sale but no idea of their worth. She explained what I had and made me an offer I gladly accepted; far more than I ever thought. It
I recently started doing Cad Design’s for my customers where I can take a computerized scan of the ring such as an engagement ring and then make a wedding band to fit right next to their engagement ring. The two rings will look as though they were originally made together. “If you can dream it , I can create it”
was so refreshing to meet an honest buyer. Madeleine has her own shop (Sashas Jewels) in Fenwick. I even accepted a part-time offer to work there. Madeleine has a vast knowledge of gems and stones and the credentials to prove it. I would encourage anyone looking to buy or sell jewelry to stop in. You can be assured of a friendly faces and fair, honest prices.” - F.L. Dove, Dagsboro “I met Madeleine at her shop, Sasha’s Jewels, in Fenwick Island DE. I had inherited a large amount of costume and fine jewelry and was looking for a buyer. I found that buyer in Madeleine whose shop personifies the place to purchase a wide variety of vintage and fashion jewelry. She took the time to evaluate and price each piece with honesty, knowledge and expertise. Since then, my experience at Sasha’s jewelry store has been beyond my expectations. The repairs done to my jewelry were handled with skill and efficiency. Your input and suggestions were appreciated. I get many compliments on the opal earrings you crafted for me. Because of those reasons I will be a return customer whenever I visit Ocean City, Maryland.” - Antionette
Madeleine sasha says ... “This photo album is from a ring I did for a woman. The Garnet is her birthstone, the peridot is her son’s birthstone and this was her mother’s ring. Then she had another child whose birthstone was the Opal and she had taken it to other Jewelers he said they were not able to add another stone for her. So this is the original ring the piece I cast for her to add another stone to her mothers ring.”

Sasha’s Jewels, LLC I’ve had several retail shops my first at the age of 18 in the Talleyville Shopping Center, Wilmington, DE and the next and the Booths Corner farmers market in Boothwyn, PA . I had shops in the Booths Corner farmers market for about 20 years. By the time I was ready to move on from Booths Corner I had three shops. I left the retail business to raise my young family in 1990.
My store is called Sashas Jewels LLC because when I started my business I was only 16. I didn’t feel as though I would have the credibility with the public to be able to represent a jewelry business properly. I named my business from my middle name which is Sasha. I am Madeleine Sasha. I’ve been in the jewelry business for over 40 years. I started my business when I was 16 and still in high school because I wanted to be able to buy things for myself as many teenagers can imagine. I started taking the graduate gemology classes in the 10th grade from the Gemological Institute of America in California. At that time it was a correspondence class where they would send you paper lessons and as you completed them you would mail them to the school and the school would grade your lesson and mail it back to you. As you can imagine juxtapose to this day and age where you can just email or work online, class work took a long time. The pictures in my original classes weren’t even pretty they were hand drawn pictures of inclusions of the Gem Stones. It was necessary for me to attend many gem shops and trade shows in order to get an actual look at the gemstones which I had been reading about. After graduating high school I worked for a Russian jeweler for free so that he would teach me Jewelry Repair. It was a lot of fun I really enjoyed it. He would rave about how easy I was to teach and that all he had to do was tell me what to do and I did it. This was a great boost to my confidence and acknowledgment that I was also good at what I already enjoyed doing.
I always maintained the workshop and at home and maintained my wholesale and private customers. More recently I had a shop in Berlin, NJ for 7 years. I’m currently located on Coastal Hwy in Fenwick Island, DE As well as my retail business I’ve always done jewelry repair work and appraisals for the trade servicing jewelry dealers that have antique stores and/or do the traveling antique shows nationwide. I’ve done a lot of repair work on antique jewelry and have become adept at that art as I am familiar with the styles of antique jewelry and what they’re actually supposed to look like before and after being repaired. A piece of antique jewelry that’s repaired should never look as though it’s been repaired. The repair should be in keeping with the design of the piece. Some antique parts are difficult to find therefore I’m always buying jewelry even if it’s broken because it may have parts that I can use for another customers repair. I am always buying. It doesn’t matter to me if your items are gold, silver or costume, or if you don’t know what you have! You’re welcome to bring it in and I’ll take a look at it “ there is no fee for me to evaluate your items”. If you have many items then it’s probably a
good idea to make an appointment. I’ve had some people bring in as many as three suitcases filled with jewelry costume gold silver all mixed in together. I’ve had some of my customers bring in duffel bags filled with stuff that was barely separated. I’ve gone into homes occasionally where the table tops were filled with jewelry and boxes and the whole table was covered with unknown items.
One woman found a pair of earrings at a yardsale, she paid a dollar for. I paid her $40 for them. I go to yard sales quite frequently and I’m always treasure hunting. If you come into my shop and you asked me to evaluate your piece, I will and I’ll tell you what I’m willing to pay for it. Then it’s your decision as to whether or not you would like to except the offer, there is no obligation.
I tell all of my customers that come into the shop, “Bring you items in, you might be pleasantly surprised”. Because it’s true sometimes they just don’t know the value of what they have. No matter the size of the estate I’m always interested and able to purchase. Larger estate collections of jewelry may take more time and require several visits. My goal is to make the process as smooth and stress free as possible.
If you’re going to sell your jewelry to anyone you should know their qualifications for evaluating your jewelry. I’ve gone to estate sales and bought jewelry from antique jewelry dealers and secondhand stores that simply put, did not know what they were doing.
I’ve heard some customers of mine say that the chain got broken so they threw it out or a ring lost a stone they threw it out well all of that can be fixed but basically speaking jewelry is not the same as clothing it has a value even broken. Jewelry can be worn out and could still be worth hundreds of dollars you just never know. A little known fact is some metals that are marked 14 karat are not and some jewelry that is without a mark could very well be precious. Do not just discard an item without having it tested. I can test it for you, we can find out together because I will do it right in front of you. I am happy to teach anyone what to look for. I’ve had many customers whom I’ve taught what to look for and they go out the yard sales and they find things they bring it to me.
Just this past fall I bought a two stone diamond ring for five dollars at an antique show and the woman had no idea what she was selling, therefore she probably had no idea what she should have paid the person from whom she had bought it. I’ve had customers bring me jewelry and told me that another jeweler told them a repair could not be done. Well, I really love a challenge! So I will go ahead and figure out a way to get that done for my customer. Sometimes it’s a simple fix and sometimes it’s a little bit more involved. Either way it’s all fun and games to me, as I really enjoy it. I attend many trade shows as there always new developments in jewelry and styles and design. I am always learning something new! I keep my eyes open for new ways to do things and new designs that I find very exciting.
I love to get old pieces or exciting things that are different and unusual looking. I will make a mold of them and recast them in several different styles recasting them with the lost wax casting method. This comes in handy and is a lot of fun when you have a particular family piece that was inherited and maybe there are two or three sisters that would like to have that piece as a remembrance of their mother or some other matriarchal family member. I can make several of the same piece and even though it’s not the original piece it’s still intrinsic to the memory. Earrings are another fun project. Sometimes you get a pair of earrings and do you have two sisters that would both like to have the earrings. I can make pendants out of the earrings and each sister can have a pendant to wear. I do this in my shop quite often with my earrings were friends or sisters come in and they would like to have something that goes together and I’ll take a pair of earrings out of my showcase and I’ll make them what I call sister pendants or best friend pendants. I have a large selection of natural gemstones and vintage Gem Stones to replace in vintage rings that have either lost or broken stones. I also have a large selection of vintage castings. I recently had a woman come into the shop with a vintage stone that her mother had left her I had a Filigree casting which fit her stone exactly. Which is rather difficult as the older stones are not calibrated as the newer stones are they were very unusual sizes. Putting a vintage stone into a new ring just doesn’t suit the style of the era of which the stone originated.

Know Your Rights- Delaware Worker’s Compensation Laws Heather Long is proud to be the first female Partner in the Newark office of Kimmel, Carter, Roman, Peltz & O’Neill, P.A., a Delaware personal injury and workers’ compensation firm. As the first female partner in the law firm’s history, Heather has advanced diversity, which enables her to better serve her clients and injured workers in the State of Delaware. Licensed since 2005, Ms. Long’s practice is focused on assisting plaintiffs with workers’ compensation, personal injury, nursing home negligence, medical malpractice, and premises liability claims. For more information, or to schedule a free consultation, please call her directly at 302-565-6132 or e mail Heather at Hlong@kimmelcarter.com. By Heather A. Long, Esquire Maya Angelou has said “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better. When workers are injured, they do the best that they know how to do in navigating the Workers’ Compensation system. My first meeting with an injured worker is spent imparting knowledge to empower them to do better, once they understand how the process works and what their rights are. Yes- RIGHTS! There are several benefits that injured workers are entitled to as a matter of law, and which they often either do not know about or do not fully understand. Understanding your rights will help you get the best medical treatment available in order to make the best medical recovery possible. This article will give you a very broad overview of those rights. Keep in mind, every case is different, so a free office or telephone consultation would be the most valuable source of information to tailoring these benefits to your particular issues. Workers’ compensation is generally a “no fault” benefit because it does not matter whose fault your injury is, only that you are injured while in the course and scope of your employment.
of this recovery is based on a formula which takes into account the part of your body that was injured, your percentage of impairment and your workers’ compensation rate of pay. As every work-related accident is unique, all of the rights listed above will not necessarily apply to every case. If you are injured at work, the best thing you can do is arm yourself with the necessary knowledge about your rights under the Delaware Workers’ Compensation Act. In order to do better, you first have to know better! I highly recommend that you hire an attorney to guide you and protect you through the workers’ compensation system. I offer free consultations with no attorney’s fee to be paid until your case is settled. This gives you the peace of mind you need in order to focus on the most important thing- your health.
What are injured workers entitled to under the Delaware Workers’ Compensation Act? 1. Disability Benefits Your wage rights under the workers’ compensation laws in Delaware are based on your average weekly wage (AWW for short). Workers’ compensation wage benefits can pay up to 2/3 of your AWW, up to a limit of $725.89. This benefit is designed to replace your wages when you can’t work for 3 or more days due to your work injury. This benefit is also available on a partial basis if your doctor restricts your work hours or work duties, which results in you earning lower wages. 2. Medical Benefits If you are injured in the course and scope of your employment, you are entitled to medical benefits for the rest of your life as long as the treatment is reasonable, necessary and related to the work injury, and your Delaware caregiver is also certified under the Workers’ Compensation Statute. (If you see an out-of-state doctor, they do not have to be certified under the Workers’ Compensation Statute.) A list of certified providers can be found on the Department of Labor’s website. The worker’s compensation insurance company must pay at least one medical bill every 5 years in order to keep this benefit active! 3. Mileage You are entitled to mileage reimbursement of forty cents (.40) per mile, roundtrip for your doctors appointments. 4. Scarring/ Disfigurement If you were unfortunate enough to have suffered a scar or other physical disfigurement as a result of your work injury, you are generally entitled to compensation. Any scar and/or disfigurement that is visible when properly clothed can be awarded a monetary settlement. The amount of the settlement is determined by the location, size and visibility of the scar. Also, if you walk with a limp as a result of your work injury, or need to use any devices permanently (crutches, wheelchair, etc.) you may also qualify for this benefit.

Why Whole Life Insurance with a Long Term Care Rider? policy is there when you and your family need it.
By Debbie Crawford Why Whole Life Insurance? You want to make sure your
Whole life insurance is permanent insurance. You pay a level premium each year which is applied to the cost of insurance and to cash value. This asset called whole life insurance with it’s “pool of money” is available for a life event (if necessary) and gives
you permission to spend down your retirement assets while still leaving a financial legacy to your family. Why a Long Term Care Rider? It’s the most cost effective way of having Long Term Care (LTC) coverage available if and when you need it. Long term care costs can financially ruin you and your family
or worse...you can’t afford the care. The cost of a pure LTC policy is high. Insurance companies can’t guarantee level premiums each year because they are paying claims at a high rate. So, even if you get a pure LTC policy, you don’t know how much or how often the premiums will increase, and if you can’t afford the increase, they can decrease your benefits.
Monthly long term care costs can be in excess of $5,000 a month. These costs vary from state to state. A pure LTC policy is a “use it or lose it” policy meaning that you can only use it if you have a claim. As a rider on a whole life policy, the premium is much less and you have a permanent insurance policy with the ability to have LTC coverage.
Please allow me the opportunity to discuss these options with you and help you create a financial plan that will continue to work for you for years to come.

WHO HAS THE TIME? In the spring of last year, I was approached by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to be a candidate for the Woman of the Year campaign in 2020. It is a 10 week fundraising effort which runs from March 5 through May 15th here in Sussex County, of which I was not too familiar. I immediately and politely declined, citing that I “did not have the time,” which I already knew with a family vacation already planned and my nephew graduating from college.

Family. Friends. Community.
My perspective on time changed just a few days later, when my neighbor and dear friend came across the lawn to tell me he had been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Did he have “time” to get cancer? Would he be cured and get all the “time” to spend with his family he had planned? So if you are approached by me, or the other 5 candidates who are working to raise as much money as possible for blood cancer

Whitehall Could Be Your New Hometown! 3. Superior Building Materials
Brian DiSabatino Article By Jacqueline DiSabatino
M
ost people have heard of The Town of Whitehall, but if you haven’t visited, you are missing out! By just driving through Whitehall, you can see the uniqueness, beauty, and sense of community that Whitehall has to offer. When you buy a home at Whitehall you are also buying a lifestyle, which includes knowing your neighbors, low maintenance living and more life per square foot! Many things set The Town of Whitehall apart when looking for your next home; these are the 5 reasons that stand out:
1. Appoquinimink School District Whitehall is located within the Appoquinimink School District, which is the number one school district in Delaware. Whitehall is also home to Lorewood Grove Elementary School. This gives children the rare opportunity to walk to and from school in the safety of their own community.
2. You’re not just buying a home; you’re buying a hometown! When buying a home at Whitehall, it’s much more than just a purchase, it’s a lifestyle. With over fifty events a year, Whitehall is a place you will want to invite your friends to and a place where you truly have fun. Whether enjoying live music, the beer garden, movie nights, fireworks, or Vet Fest, there is something for everyone!
Whitehall’s quality of construction can be seen the minute you drive into the community. With high architectural principles, all of the homes include Hardie Plank Siding and Anderson windows. When you enter the inside of the homes, you will also see many upgraded features that are included as a standard by both of our builders, Thompson Communities and Benchmark Builders.
4. Location, Location, Location Just south of the C&D Canal, Whitehall is just a mile from Route 1 and the 301 bypass, making the location extremely convenient for those needing to get to surrounding locations such as Wilmington, Delaware Beaches, Philadelphia and Maryland.
5. We have what you are looking for Offering twin homes, townhomes, single-family, estate, first-floor living, and custom homes, Whitehall has over 20 floor plans, and if one of them doesn’t fit your needs, we offer the option to build a custom or semi-custom home! This large range of offerings also makes for a beautiful streetscape, which makes Whitehall anything but cookiecutter.
through building community. Brian is the President of the Delaware Contractors Association, Chairman of the Board of The Grand Opera House, and Lead Organizer of Vet Fest, an annual festival for local military and their families.
Testimonials “We really like the spirit of community that’s already here at Whitehall. And having a town architect is a plus to ensure that the design and sense of community are maintained. It’s fun for us to imagine what Mapleton Village will look like ten years from now.” ~Mr. & Mrs. Littell, New Neighbors “There are a number of reasons that we love the Town of Whitehall. The neighbors
are great, and our home is absolutely beautiful. But most of all, we love Whitehall because of the vision that’s coming to fruition right before our eyes. Shops, bike trails, and elementary school, homes with porches; it’s all really happening!” ~ Mr. & Mrs. Guy, New Neighbors
Don’t take our word for it, come see for yourself! Whitehall welcome center is open every day 11am-5pm and located at 801 Mapleton Avenue, Middletown, Delaware. Visit us online at www.whitehallde.com or call 302-376-8699.

Humidifiers and Indoor Air Quality
Tired of dry air, itchy skin, and static shock? Ask Pro Works, Inc. how a whole house humidifier can help you with indoor air quality and overall comfort. Whole house humidifiers are often overlooked when we talk about comfort and indoor air quality. The proper use of humidifiers and indoor air quality are directly related, particularly in the winter

conditions when outdoor humidity levels drop. Certain humidity levels tend to create indoor environments that support specific air quality conditions. Making the connection between humifiers and indoor air quality can keep your home healthier and its occupants more comfortable. The federal Environmental Protection Agency states that humidity levels should range between 30 percent and 60 percent. Levels below this in a
home can usually be a direct result of low outdoor humidity during winter. The other major factor in low humidity in a home is the result of using a forced air furnace. The continuous circulation of forced hot air throughout the house removes water vapor. Combined with naturally drier winter air infiltrating into the interior of the home, interior humidity may drop below recommended levels. Viruses, and respiratory illnesses can thrive in low moisture level conditions. Other byproducts of low indoor
humidity include comfort related issues such as itchy dry skin and static shock when touching certain surfaces. The other simple fact is the body feels moisture more than temperature therefore a properly conditioned home maintaining 30 to 60 percent humidity will feel warmer.
Call Pro Works, Inc. today and ask how we can help with your indoor air quality.
“After doing business with Chad, the manager of Pro Works for over 6 years, we found him to be a truly professional service/maintenance person in all our heating and air conditioning needs. With a great work ethic and good service prices, you will find none better and more reliable, we guarantee it. - The Publisher

How Does Real Estate Investment Work? By Albert Miller, Owner Who are we?
A&E Properties DE is owned and operated by Albert and Elmina Miller. They reside in Dover, Del. with their two wonderful daughters, Kayla and Ashlie. Over the years they have built their family on a strong foundation of faith, generosity, and integrity and they strive to incorporate these principles into all that they do. Albert and Elmina Miller started this company back in 2007, but it wasn’t until January of 2017 that Albert decided to take the leap of faith and go all-in with the real estate business. He was raised in the Amish community in Dover, Delaware and at age twelve began working in the construction field with his family. By the time he turned sixteen, he was a full-time bricklayer and from there continued in the masonry field for the next three years. After turning twenty, he started his own business framing houses for big developers throughout Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. That same year, Albert and Elmina made the hard decision to leave the Amish community. This decision was tough, but they remain forever grateful for the hardworking and committed foundation that they were raised in.
We are A&E Properties of Delaware! We own and operate A&E Building Service, our home building and renovation company, as well as A&E Property Solutions, a real estate investment and rental property company. We specialize in new builds, flipping houses and contracting for custom homes.

Slide on into spring with these fresh ideas for those hard to cover Sliding Doors!
Often while on an in-home consultation, the topic of handling the sliding door comes up. It’s always accompanied with some sort of joke, or look of bewilderment. I usually look forward to figuring out my customer’s way of articulating their concern. To paraphrase, it generally goes like this. “I need to cover this—I HATE VERTICAL BLINDS.” Of course, I need only remember back to my first apartment to understand why. Cheap vertical blinds are everywhere. Their top treatments are either bent up and trying to fall, or already placed in that closet, behind the water heater. The vertical louvers are seldom part of a complete set. They like to break and fall, and usually there is tape or unmatched colors mixed in for good measure. The good news- the custom blinds industry has you covered with more modern and beautiful options! Vertical Honeycomb ShadesHoneycomb shades are quite popular these days, so why not for sliders? Several manufacturers make honeycombs that are rotated on their side, and anchored to the stack side, and make a solid option for this application. Not only are these available in many colors and textures, but they are some of the most insulative coverings available. When you want to use the door, simply slide the shade into the closed position. You want it half open- no problem. Generally, magnets are used to help in the fully closed position. ShuttersShutters are one of the hottest products in the window covering industry, thanks in part to myriad of home improvement shows that seem to always drop in shutters as one of the final touches. Shutters are also a great insulator and are extremely easy to use. If you have kids or pets that are prone to a little rough housing, these are a nice hearty choice.
58 I Spring 2020
Sheer ShadesAnother trendy approach comprises multiple layers of sheer fabric, arrayed in a varying degree of light blocking and privacy choices. Essentially, when the vanes are opened, you can see right through the sheer backing. When you want that privacy, close the vanes and you’re all set. Natural Woven Wood DrapesIf you are a big fan of a natural look, several manufacturers market woven shades that are turned for use in vertical applications. Generally cordless and extremely light, these can be optioned with base bamboo materials that are cost competitive to custom vertical blinds. If you want to add darkening or higher levels of privacy, linings can be applied to the back. “Old school” Vertical BlindsYes, you’re reading this correctly. These are still made! As a provider of many different window treatments, I want to go on the record to say that vertical blinds are a great product. If you skip the dollar store version, you will find a smooth, effective, and long-lasting covering for a large glass door. No other treatment combines versatility, ease of use, and affordability quite like this venerable leader. Modern vertical blinds are available in high end vinyls and fabrics. For a contemporary look, we recommend outfitting your vertical blind with a stained wood valance, which can easily be matched to flooring, cabinetry, etc. As always, we recommend consulting with professionals to ensure your product is right for your application. This will also help improve the finished look and long-term reliability of your new treatment. Also- do make sure your seller offers you some sort of warranty for this or any window covering. Not only is this good insurance in case of damage or faulty components, but custom blinds retailers are not looking to warranty something that will fall apart.

“Off Season” Planning
Will Have Your Landscape Blossoming This Spring burlap” and “bare root.” Balled plants can be planted at any time during the year, while bare root plants can only be planted after the leaves drop (that is, in fall or winter). Bare root plants are less expensive than balled ones, so simply by planting in the colder months, one can reduce cost significantly with no difference in results.
By Fred Winward Many homeowners wait until spring to think about their landscape. Inspired by the warmer weather and the blooming flowers, they start imagining what improvements they would like to make to their landscape. Often, they’re disappointed to find that all of the landscape contractors they contact are busy until midsummer or later. This is the “spring rush”. It is important to realize that each season, not just spring, is the right season to work toward a better landscape. The most effective landscaping program includes yearround activities, timed precisely for the maximum effectiveness.
There are diverse landscape maintenance projects to be done in the fall, including cutting back annuals and herbaceous perennials, and raking leaves. Fall is a great time to transplant because the shorter days and lower temperatures place less water on freshly planted perennials. The fall season is generally a much less hectic time than spring in the landscaping professional’s schedule more accommodating this time of year. WINTER Winter is a time for introspection. As the shining days cause us to spend more time indoors, we find ourselves with more time to reflect, to evaluate, and to plan.
Though it’s not commonly thought of as the time to work on one’s landscape, quite the contrary is true. A successful landscape, like any worthwhile project, demands careful planning…and what better time to plan than now. Work with your landscape designer to define your goals for the upcoming year, unhurried by the tight schedules of spring. There are a number of outdoor maintenance projects for which wintertime is a fine time for pruning; removing old, dead, or diseased branches will result in a rejuvenated plant in spring, with improved flowering fruiting and form. Early winter and pre-spring are considered the “off season” in the landscaping profession. As a result you may be able to obtain discounted rates during this time of year.
walls, and fountains. A spring deck or patio project will bring countless hours of enjoyment per the summer months. June is the month for “architectural pruning”, where the skilled hand guides the growth habit of trees and shrubs for peak aesthetic results. SUMMER Late summer is the time for grass seeding. Cooler weather and a typical increase in rainfall make it a great time to plant for a lush lawn next year. As summer turns to fall, weed germination levels are much lower than in spring or summer, giving your new grass seed the best conditions to thrive. Once you realize that every season is the right season to work on building a successful landscape - a landscape that meets your functional goals and expresses your personal tastes and style-it becomes obvious that the best day of the year to get started is…today.
SPRING While many people plant in the spring, it’s actually a better time to work on the “hardscape” walkways, driveways, retaining

Here’s an overview of each season and what you can do in that season to work toward your ideal landscape. FALL Smart homeowners know that fall, rather than spring, is prime planting time. Many people know that fall is a good time to plant bulbs, such as tulips, crocus and gladiolus for spring color. But few know that it’s an especially effective and economical time to plant trees. Here’s why. Trees and shrubs are available for planting in two forms: balled in

Picture This… C.M.Baker Photography Photography may have changed over the decades, but sharing photos is still something we do daily in our business and personal lives, and no matter how we’re using photos these days, they continue to bring smiles to our faces and help educate & inform us. We may not always remember everything that happened at an event; however we don’t have to worry about that because photos will always be a way to remind us about our life experiences, good times and cherished moments. The best and least stressful way to use photography at one of your events is to contact Mike Baker, with C.M. Baker Photography. When planning events there is already a lot to do, so you can take one thing off your list by letting Mike handle one of the most important parts of your celebration. This will take that stress off you, and allow you to focus on other things. By hiring Mike, you have several choices. You can use an indoor photo booth that
doesn’t take up a lot of space, but brings a lot of joy to any event. The black photo booth is only 5 feet by 5 feet being compact to fit any space, especially for smaller venues where space is a commodity. Mike also offers a white inflatable photo booth. This is decked out with lights and gives a more colorful flare to the classic photo booth. Or you could use the outdoor Shasta Shutterbug Photo Booths. The Shasta Shutterbugs are mostly used outside and can be used for an outdoor or indoor event (only if you have an 8ft x 8ft doorway). With much of the Sussex County and Eastern Shore Maryland having many wedding barns, it has become quite a wedding barn venue. The original Shasta I was a 1969 Compact Shasta Camper converted into a white decorative photo booth on wheels. The Shasta II is barn themed with a white barnwood interior. The Shasta II was a 1964 Shasta Compact Camper. Both Shasta’s provide added fun to your outdoor space, and will keep your guests coming back. All the booths print keepsake photo strips, provide customized props and are a wonderful opportunity for your guests to have a lot of fun and take photos home with them to share for many years to come. Plus, all photo strips are in color, and have customized text and designs to suit your event needs, and print in just a few
seconds. C.M. Baker Photography covers most of the Delmarva Peninsula going south and up to southern PA going north. In addition to the photo booths and Shasta’s taking the photos, Mike has been doing weddings for almost 30 years, and is one of the few wedding photographers that print out 8x10s at the wedding for all to view, and for the bride and groom to take home with them. Mike is also certified by the FAA for commercial license Part 107, and is able to do aerial images of homes for real estate companies, or anything else, and is now using a drone. With his extensive experience for close to 30 years, Mike is equipped to do onsite printing at events, and can do headshots for promotional purposes including news articles, social media, brochures and business cards. It doesn’t matter whether you have a corporate event, father-daughter dance, wedding, graduation, birthday, anniversary, or special needs. C.M. Baker has something for you to keep your memories alive, and keep you smiling for decades to come!

THE ONLY FIVE STAR RESTAURANT ON ROUTE 26
Our neighbors invited us to dinner here yesterday and it was our first experience dining here for all 4 of us. Wow, why did we wait so long to try this hidden gem right in our backyard in Ocean View? All 4 of our different entrees were excellent, as were the variety of sides you get to choose with each meal. Everything was fresh and tasty and the staff were very attentive and helpful in guiding us through our options. We left very satisfied and looking forward to a return! Thank you! - JM
“This restaurant is absolutely over the top! We love the setting, the servers, the menu selections and of course the food! We ate there again for New Years Eve. How nice to have cheese, champagne and live music (gratis) served in the warmed tent before our seating. Please do yourself a favor....make reservations with friends and enjoy!” - LS

“The food here is beautiful. The setting is elegant. The drinks are fine. It is a nice change from the seafood staples of this beach town. I always over order. It is worth it.” - Badhoh G., Rehoboth, Delaware
