This pediatric dental practice is everything. Starting out with the amazing greetings from the receptionist. Extremely clean and kid friendly. Both dentists are AMAZING! They cater to our every need, no matter the time. They are professionals and speak fluent Spanish, which is a major plus. My kids love them. Switching from another practice was the best choice I ever made.

By far, one of the most professional and kind pediatric dentists I have ever encountered. The entire staff went above and beyond to make sure my children were taken care of, and most of all, went out of their way to make my babies feel comfortable. Highly recommend Delaware Pediatric Dentistry. They are the absolute best!

Special Needs Children and Oral Health: Where to start? By David Delgado, DMD Sometimes just going grocery shopping is a challenge when you have little ones in tow. Yes, toys and candy! They already know exactly where they are half the time! You practically need a map to avoid all the wrong turns that will cost you extra money, time and the patience to say no. Oh and of course the occasional floor tantrum or meltdown with master manipulation to follow soon after. This happens to parents more than we like to admit and applies for all children, typical and children with special needs. I happen to fall into both camps, as a father of two, one a child with Autism. I know first hand the fear of the unknown, the tense feeling to a familiar or new environment, whether it be groceries, clothes shopping or a dental visit. Sometimes at Delaware Pediatric Dentistry a dental chair is not needed to do an examination on a special needs child, you may find us sitting on the floor, singing, humming or making up stories on the spot as we evaluate our patients mouth. Thinking outside of the box to create confidence and trust is something we strive for as pediatric dentists with all children special needs or not. After all, it took my 3yo child with autism three visits to our office for him to finally sit in the chair and for me to do a proper cleaning and I’m the father! I am certainly not offended but I use this as a simple example that repetitive appointments may be necessary for our special needs patients to feel comfortable enough for us to do a proper evaluation. The federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau defines Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) as those who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional condition and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally. For some parents with CSHCN oral hygiene can easily be overlooked with all other medical issues the child may be going through. Additionally, certain conditions may place the child at a higher risk for dental decay, gum diseases, crowding, extra or missing teeth. These findings are to be reviewed by the pediatric

dentist specifically to the child’s oral health concerns. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports 1 in 5 US households have a child with special health care needs, additionally they are almost twice as likely to have undiagnosed dental problems compared to a typical child. At Delaware Pediatric Dentistry our goal is to change this outlook. As board certified pediatric dentists our focus is to prevent oral diseases and cavities through early childhood preventive visits and education. As with CSHCN early childhood intervention has been the golden standard for treatment and the same can be said of oral health. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends all children to be seen by 12 month of age or after the eruption of the first tooth by a pediatric dentist. An important step in good oral hygiene and preventing cavities before they start. All pediatric dentists are trained in the treatment and care for those with special needs they have 2-3 years of specialized training past the four years of dental school with children and CSHCN.

What to do:

1) Finding a Dental Home. AAPD recommends finding a pediatric dentist that you feel comfortable with treating your child by 1 year of age. Ask your pediatrician for a referral or search online at AAPD.org 2) No Teeth...No Problem Start your infants oral care now, start by wiping their gums with a wet gauze after feedings this will help remove excess milk in the mouth, clean the gingiva and also help create a habit the child will accustom to if done multiple times a day. 3) Call ahead and fill out all necessary information about your child and list your concerns, speak with the pediatric dentist prior to the first visit if needed.

At Delaware Pediatric Dentistry we are committed to providing child centered dental care in a friendly environment for all children. It is our goal to empower patients and families with the knowledge and confidence to fight against cavities.

The last few months have been filled with a great deal of uncertainty, panic and sadness over the pandemic and the world’s unrest. We just want to feel safe and normal. But what is normal? The time we spent during quarantine gave us the opportunity to reflect on family, special interests and passions long forgotten! Maybe this is now our new normal. The restrictions of the pandemic has changed the world we now live in. However, the one thing it has done for us in a very positive note is the interaction and quality time spent with family. Use these next months to reach out to local businesses in every form. They need our support. It maybe a time to reflect on our blessings and give thanks for what we do have. Most importantly we have to stay healthy. Wear your mask. We are not out of the woods yet. The Publisher

Radiofrequency Skin Tightening at ReNove Med Spa Michelle Parsons, MD is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Aesthetic and Integrative Medicine. Most individuals experience facial aging at some point in their lives. While many patients look into plastic surgery to correct imperfections like wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin, there are those who desire an alternative solution that is less invasive. At Renove Med Spa, we offer state of the art treatments like the Pixel 8 Radio Frequency Skin Tightening, to rejuvenate the face and provide you with a youthful and attractive appearance. What is Radiofrequency Skin Tightening? Radiofrequency skin tightening is a technique used to tighten sagging and thinning skin with minimal pain, downtime and expense with fantastic results, noticeable within a few weeks after the first treatment. Radiofrequency skin tightening treatments use small micro needles to deliver a form of heat energy, or radiofrequency, past the top layer of skin, deeper into the skin tissues. This causes a micro-injury to the skin, sending a message to the skin to heal and repair itself, without negatively impacting the outward appearance of the skin. This procedure also triggers fibroplasia, the process in which the body forms new fibrous tissue and stimulates the production of collagen, causing collagen fibers to become shorter and more tense. At the same time, the molecules that make up collagen are left undamaged.

Skin elasticity increases and loose, sagging skin is tightened. What Can I Expect During a Radiofrequency Skin Tightening Treatment? Prior to your treatment, your skin will be cleansed and a topical numbing cream will be applied and allowed to take effect. Once you are ready for the treatment, you will be placed in a comfortable reclined position and the treatment will proceed area by area. A full facial treatment takes 25 minutes. You can watch a video of Dr. Michelle Parsons performing a treatment on her website https://www. renovemedspa.org/rf-microneedling . There should be minimal discomfort with the treatment, as the energy levels are adjustable for all skin types. As the treatment proceeds, you will feel as if you have a moderate sunburn. Cool air is used for comfort during the treatment, which is typically not needed upon completion of the treatment. Prior to leaving, a hydrating cream and sunscreen will be applied to your skin. Makeup can be applied after 12 hours. When Will I see Results from Radiofrequency Skin Tightening? Immediately following the treatment, most people will feel as if they had a windburn or mild sunburn. There can be mild swelling after the treatment, but not everyone has swelling. Skin tightening and softening of visible lines and wrinkles can be seen as soon as 4 weeks

Testimonial “After just 1 treatment of the PiXel8 Radio-Frequency Micro-needling on my chest area, I was amazed at the results! All the crepey skin and wrinkles were gone! I used to be self conscious about wearing v-necks, etc. but there is no old looking crepey skin now. I highly recommend this procedure.” ~Jackie G., January, 2020

after the treatment, and will continue to improve and tighten the skin for 3 to 6 months following the treatment. It is recommended to receive 3 to 5 treatments over the course of a year, typically spread apart by four weeks. There are discounts for package treatments. Since the improvement of skin tone, texture, is from your natural healing of your skin, results are long lasting and in general, and with proper skin care, results last years.

What Areas Can Be Treated with Radiofrequency Radiofrequency treatments are most commonly performed on facial and neck skin. It is exceptionally beneficial around the eyes, to treat loose sagging eye skin, and around the mouth, to improve lip lines. It is also common to treat the chest and hands. We also treat sagging knee skin, stretch marks, surgical scars and acne scars.

Dennis is an independent security consultant with over 30 years’ experience in law enforcement and security operations. Their credentials, combined experience and commitment to helping others make them uniquely qualified to address the safety and security needs of vulnerable populations in the state of Delaware.

ABOUT THE COMPANY SeaCure Solutions derives its name from our coastal surroundings and commitment to peace of mind through safety and security initiatives. The company specializes in Personal Emergency Response Systems, also known as Medical Alert Devices and other risk management strategies to support senior populations, lone workers such as realtors, children, and anyone with special needs. Medical alert systems cost less than $1.00 dollar a day and can be covered in part by Medicaid and/or medical insurance. SO, WHAT IS A MEDICAL ALERT OR PERS DEVICE? The Delaware Health and Social Services Division of Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities describes a personal emergency response system or PERS as a device that allows a person at risk to get immediate help in the event of an emergency. A PERS or medical alert device is monitored by care specialists with knowledge of the client’s name, location, medical history, family contacts and practical details such as pets and how to access the residence. A PERS device with fall-detection can notify the monitoring center in the event of a fall, even if the client cannot press the emergency button. A mobile PERS with

GPS can track the client to monitor their location. Emergency medical services are immediately dispatched to the client’s location when they need help. WHO SHOULD WEAR A PERS DEVICE? According to the Centers for Disease Control, chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Six in ten adults in the U.S. have a chronic disease and four in ten adults have two or more. According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal traumarelated hospital admissions among older adults. Additional findings show that… • Every second of every day in the U.S. an older adult (age 65+) falls • Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall • Every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall • A full 80% of falls among seniors occur in the bathroom • The average cost for treating a fall exceeds $30,000

and peace of mind to anyone who lives alone, is vulnerable to falls, or has been diagnosed with a serious medical condition. WHAT SETS US APART FROM OUR COMPETITORS? This allows for timely delivery of equipment and guarantees that each medical alert system is fully

operational and meets the client’s needs. Medical alert systems can be shipped to clients under special circumstances (such as COVID-19 restrictions) but are typically set up and programmed at the residence.

Women and Heart Disease: Reconnecting with a good ol’ friend Recently published research reveals, once again, the lack of awareness about the impact of heart disease in women, among both women and physicians, and how the stigmatization of the disease and body weight continue to be major barriers to women seeking treatment. Data collected from interviews on 1,011 US women aged 25-60 years of age and physician survey data from 200 primary care doctors and 100 cardiologists (*). The main goals were to determine knowledge, attitudes and beliefs in regard to heart disease in women. The findings can be summarized as follows: 1. Awareness: Among women, 45 % were unaware of the fact that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. This level of awareness was even lower among women with lower educational levels and income as well as in ethnic minorities. About 71% of women the issue

of heart health was never raised with their doctors. Conversely, physicians did not discuss cardiovascular disease with them citing other more pressing health issues at the time of their visit or the lack of reported cardiac symptoms. This suggests prevention was not seen as priority, in the absence of symptoms. As we know, among women the first symptom of a heart problem is often a heart attack or sudden cardiac death. 2. Assessment: Even though a majority of women had an annual physical exam or wellness visit, only 40 % reported having a heart health assessment. About 74 % reported having at least one risk factor for heart disease, just 16 % were told by their doctor that they were at risk. An interesting fact is that 45 % of women cancelled or postponed their doctor visit until they lost weight, out of embarrassment or by feeling overwhelmed by their heart disease, and lack of time to exercise or take better care of

The County Woman’s Journal

themselves. 3. Among the doctors surveyed, only 22 % of primary care physicians and 42 % or cardiologist felt well prepared to assess cardiovascular risk in women. In addition, risk assessment guidelines were implemented by only 16 % of primary care doctors and by 22 % of cardiologists. There remains a need for the medical community

to try and help counteract the stereotypes that still exist about cardiovascular disease in women. This requires raising the level of awareness about these issues and to help women overcome barriers to increasing physical activity and to develop healthier eating habits instead of focusing in the stigma of just weight loss. Women are natural caregivers, often times neglecting their own personal care, while doing all and then some

for others. It is time to take care of the caregivers as well. He graduated from Temple School of Podiatric Medicine in 1997 and continued his surgical training at North Philadelphia Health Systems- St. Joe’s Hospital and Tenet Health Systems- Parkview Hospital. RADIAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY Dr. Joseph Wendolowski at the Delaware Total Foot and Ankle Center is happy to announce that he is now offering Radial Shockwave Therapy in his Lewes office. The enPuls Pro system is a cutting edge, non-invasive, non-pharmacological, highly effective solution for the treatment of chronic foot, heel, and ankle pain as well as soft tissue pain and sports injuries. Radial Shockwave Therapy is an FDA cleared technology proven to increase the rate of healing for soft tissue tendinopathy. This treatment method enhances blood circulation and accelerates the healing process causing damaged tissue to gradually regenerate. When you experience chronic pain, your body no longer recognizes that there is an injury to that area. As a result, it shuts down the healing process and you feel no relief. The ballistic sound waves of the EnPuls Pro system penetrate deep through your soft tissue, causing a microtrauma or new inflammatory condition to the treated area. Once this occurs, it then triggers your body’s natural healing response once again. The energy emitted also causes the cells in the soft tissue to release certain biochemicals that intensify the body’s natural healing process. These biochemicals allow for the building of an array of new microscopic blood vessels in the soft tissue.

Testimonial “I want to thank Dr. Joe and his experienced staff for supporting my foot needs in a comfortable way, with simple procedures, solutions, education, patience, and tools to reduce pain and enable me to lead the active life I love despite my age. My feet are what keeps my body stable. I would recommend his experience and caring methods to any one in need.” - Barbara Steele

Radial Shockwave Therapy has a proven success rate that is equal to or greater than that of traditional treatment methods, including surgery, without the risks, complications, and lengthy recovery periods. There are no incisions and no risk of infection, or scar tissue, like with surgery. There is no need for anesthesia to be administered during the treatment, as opposed to high-energy shockwave therapy. Patients treated with this treatment may be active immediately and resume their normal routine the same day. Many patients find a significant and immediate reduction in their pain. Some patients will feel results gradually after each treatment. Dr. Wendolowski provides the treatment in the office and it takes approximately five minutes for each treatment. This technology has been used for over 20 years and produces about an 80% success rate. Call to make an appointment with Dr. Wendolowski to discuss if this treatment is right for you! Doctors, Clinicians, Specialists and a New Kind of House Call

Transforming mental health care through telehealth services Erin Willis Director of Business Development, SUN Behavioral Delaware Erin Willis is the Director of Business Development for SUN Delaware headquartered in Georgetown, Delaware. Bringing with her nearly a decade of experience, she was drawn to the behavioral health system’s mission and values having joined in May 2018. She works every day to further SUN’s mission and cultivate positive change in Sussex County by helping the region’s most vulnerable neighbors suffering from mental illness.

“Thank you for helping me work towards my treatment goals. This program has made me a better educator and a better person overall, and I look forward to seeing where my future takes me.” — SUN Behavioral Adult PHP patient Most doctors may not make house calls like they did in the “good old days,” but as Americans’ needs evolve so must how we provide mental health care. With technological development and in the wake of COVID-19, those needs are changing faster than ever. Most of us know that millions of Americans struggle with mental health every year. Struggles that have now been exacerbated by coronavirus complications, which have brought with them significant issues like: job loss, isolation, mourning the unexpected deaths of loved ones, and extreme trauma for front-line workers — compounding new problems on top of pre-existing ones. As quarantine prevents direct, critical connections to the outside world, the ability to manage and cope with mental health struggles is further impeded. We know from studying the previous effects of quarantine during the SARS outbreak of 2003 that it can cause a high prevalence of psychological distress symptoms. In that study, 29% of participants reported symptoms of posttraumatic stress and 31% of respondents reported symptoms of depression.

That’s where telehealth services come in. Barriers that previously prevented telehealth adoption have been eclipsed by the urgent demand created by today’s environment. It’s projected by year’s end that more than a billion people around the world could be using these kinds of services (Forrester Research, Inc.), which is why those in the medical profession are tirelessly working to establish telehealth services for their patients. SUN Behavioral is no exception. For those who aren’t familiar with telehealth, a service provided by SUN, it provides patients with the ability to have virtual consultations and visits with doctors and specialists from anywhere through video calls. Those who are searching for help can schedule no-cost telehealth consultations with a SUN clinician for an assessment of their situation. From there, we work with them to identify a plan for their continuum of care based on their unique needs. That may include treatment in an inpatient, partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient program. If it’s one of the latter two options, they can now participate in those programs through our telehealth services or in-person — whichever they’re most comfortable with.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of Americans to isolate themselves at home, which protects physical health, but it can put increased pressure on our mental and emotional health and intensify existing conditions. With that in mind and when you’re suffering from a disorder like debilitating depression, getting dressed and leaving the house simply to get the mail can feel impossible— let alone getting out to seek help in a setting like a therapist’s office or behavioral health facility. At SUN, we

know if we can connect with you through a simple video call, getting you back on a path of wellness becomes possible. No matter what is keeping you from leaving your house — from quarantine to anxiety or more — mental health help is evolving to meet you wherever you are. Telehealth services can virtually and safely bring the doctor to you where you’re most comfortable. Your home. Just visit SUNDelaware.com to get started.

No-Cost Telehealth Consultations are Here Accessible care during this anxious time. Do you struggle with mental illness? Has COVID-19 made your struggles more difficult or created new ones? Easterseals Teletherapy is a Win for Families By Natalie Scott Blaire Marie tilted her head, smiled and let out a giggle when she saw her Easterseals occupational therapist on the screen for the first time. She is used to meeting with her in person weekly at daycare. When the virus sweeping the nation caused many of Easterseals services to shut down, the therapists jumped into action. Shortly after, Blaire Marie and her therapist were reunited, through a screen, during Teletherapy. Blaire Marie greeted her therapist with a “Hey,” her favorite word these days. “I can’t speak highly enough about the Easterseals team,” Stacey, Blaire Marie’s mom, says. “I like Teletherapy because I feel like the therapist is instructing me. It helps me understand more about what they are working on together. I like the interaction I have with her therapist. I come with questions and she has the solutions.”

“... When we started with Easterseals, the therapist started pointing out all the positive things I did not notice. She made me turn my thoughts around ...” Blaire Marie, who was born three months early and later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, has been receiving occupational therapy with Easterseals for seven months. When she started, she was not able to sit up, was not reaching for toys or clapping. In a short amount of time, Blaire Marie has mastered many of her goals. “When we received her diagnosis, I was scared because I did not know what was to come,” Stacey says. “When we started with Easterseals, the therapist started pointing out all the positive things I did not notice. She made me turn my thoughts around. She reminds me how smart Blaire Marie is and that she is a bright light in the room.” A trusted provider of children’s therapy services for more than 70 years, Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore specializes in treating children ages birth through eighteen years with a variety of challenges. In just one month of Blaire Marie receiving Teletherapy. Stacey and, Blaire Marie’s dad, Chris, saw an incredible amount of growth. They noticed Blaire Marie’s ability to hold herself up with more core strength and is also helping to feed herself – even if it gets messy sometimes. “Celebrate what seem like the small milestones to others that are big milestones for your child. Celebrate the positive and the blessings,” Stacey says. “Don’t focus on what they can’t do. Focus on what they can do and celebrate that.” Chris adds, “I know Blaire Marie will surprise us with her abilities. Stay positive!”

Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, Ga. for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, Fla., where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

Today, breast cancer is a major health risk to all women. It silently grows uninterrupted for years. Early detection and prevention is the key. Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging takes a thermal picture to determine abnormalities or changes in the breast tissue. Thermography can detect irregular patterns years before a mammogram. Best of all, Thermal Imaging is painless, noninvasive, and has no radiation. DITI’s role in breast cancer and other breast disorders is to help in early detection and monitoring of abnormal physiology and the establishment of risk factors for the development or existence of disease. When used with other procedures, the best possible evaluation of breast health is made. This 15 minute non-invasive test is a valuable procedure for alerting your GP or specialist to the possibility of underlying breast disease. This test is designed to improve chances for detecting fast-growing, active tumors in the intervals between mammographic screenings or when mammography is not indicated by screening guidelines for women less than 50 years of age. A patient’s thermograms (breast images) are kept on record and form a baseline for all future routine evaluations.

14 I Fall 2020

DITI is especially appropriate for younger women between 30 and 50 whose denser breast tissue makes it more difficult for mammography to pick up suspicious lesions. This test can provide a ‘clinical marker’ to the doctor or mammographer that a specific area of the breast needs particularly close examination. The faster a malignant tumor grows, the more infrared radiation it generates. For younger women, results from DITI screening can lead to earlier detection and ultimately, longer life.

Dr. Sheila Burek Dr. Sheila Burek is a Buffalo, N.Y. native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.

a pre-cancerous state of the breast, or signs of cancer at an extremely early stage, lies in its unique capability of monitoring the temperature variations and blood vessel alterations produced by the earliest changes in tissue physiology (function). At the earliest stages, a clinical thermographer can direct their client how to “clean up their inner environment” and change temperature variations by alkalizing, detoxing, changing their diet and teaching stress reduction techniques to reduce the inflammation.

Here at Henlopen Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we offer Thermography through the Longevity Center on a quarterly basis. Studies show that: • An abnormal infrared image is also the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer • 8 times more significant than a first order family history of the disease. • A persistently abnormal thermogram carries with it a 22x higher risk of future breast cancer. • When added to a woman’s regular breast health checkups, a 61% increased survival rate has been realized. • When used as part of a multimodal approach (clinical examination + mammography + thermography) 95% of early stage cancers will be detected.

Lose Pandemic Pounds with Intermittent Fasting Michelle Parsons, MD is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Aesthetic Medicine. Has the coronavirus put you in close proximity to a lot of stored, less than healthy, food for a period of weeks with some stress eating going along to boot? Have you put on a few pandemic pounds during quarantine? Are you planning on wearing a poncho over your bathing suit? Well, you are not alone that is for sure! Coronavirus and quarantine has placed all of us under some form of stress, whether it is working during the quarantine, staying home during the quarantine or attempting to do both maybe. Coronavirus has taken away a lot of things from just about everyone in some way. But one thing is for sure, coronavirus has also given us at least one good thing in return, in some way, because when something bad happens, God always ensures that something good happens too. So I hope you can all find at least one blessing in disguise that has been personally delivered to you. And perhaps that one blessing, is that you would like to take control of your weight and your health now, because waiting for it to be completely over is just not an option any more. So, if this is you, let me introduce you to some methods of recharging your body’s health and jumpstarting your weight loss that are tried and true and have been around since Jesus fasted for 40 days. Welcome to fasting. What is Intermittent Fasting You may believe that there is only one type of fasting, which may mean to you not eating for a prolonged period of time, maybe as long as a week. But there are actually several types of fasting and there is a whole science as to which kinds of fasting are best, for ease of following and which deliver the best results, for weight loss and overall health. For these reasons, we recommend intermittent fasting for most of our patients, which is an easy and intuitive way to control eating habits based on the time of day, as opposed to just not eating anything for days on end, which most people cannot tolerate.

The intermittent fasting we most commonly recommend is the 16:8 method. Meaning that you will eat in between designated 8 hours during the day, and fast for the rest of the day for 16 hours. And this is not as bad as it might sound initially, because you will be sleeping for a lot of that fasting time. For most people this means that the hours that you will eat will be between 11am and 7pm. And for most people this will mean just skipping breakfast and not eating too late before going to bed. Intermittent fasting follows our circadian rhythm, or our sleep/ wake cycle, balances periods of food intake with periods of no food intake so that the body spends or burns the calories it ingested rather than storing those ingested calories as fat, which can lead to obesity. This discovery was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2017. Well we all knew this, but 3 American scientists proved it! Alternate Day Fasting In addition to intermittent fasting, we may also recommend alternate day fasting. This fasting entails dropping your caloric intake to 500 calories for the day on two days during the week, in addition to the intermittent fasting. This is not usually 2 consecutive days. There are other varieties of fasting, that are healthy, effective and promote even more health benefits in addition to weight loss, such as prolonged fasting which causes autophagy, which is the body’s process for breaking down and eliminating cellular debris that can be initiated by fasting. What is Autophagy a Japanese cell biologist, Dr. Ohsumi, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries on how cells recycle their content, a process known as autophagy, a Greek term for “self-eating.”It is a crucial process. During starvation, cells break down proteins and nonessential components and reuse them for energy. Cells also use autophagy to destroy invading viruses and bacteria, sending them off for recycling. And cells use autophagy to get rid of damaged

The County Woman’s Journal

structures. The process is thought to go awry in cancer, infectious diseases, immunological diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. Disruptions in autophagy are also thought to play a role in aging. It takes 7 days of fasting to reach autophagy. What kinds of food can I eat to help with weight loss? You can actually eat any kind of food and still lose weight as it is the quantity of calories that you eat during the day that will determine how much weight you lose. That said, if you were to eat a small amount of calories, but unhealthy calories devoid of essential vitamins and minerals, you are not helping your body’s health long term. Dr. Parsons will recommend a diet that is mostly vegetables, the green crunchy variety, not starchy vegetables such as potatoes or rice, and lean meats such as skinless chicken and fish. How can Dr. Parsons help with weight loss program? Here at Renove Medical Spa, we will help you understand intermittent fasting and help keep you accountable to your weight loss program. We meet with you once a month, check your weight and your food log and we will also administer B12 to aid with weight loss. The B complex vitamins help convert the food you eat into fuel for your body to use instead of storing that food as fat. Since it is very difficult for most people to decrease calories that they normally eat let alone fast for more than 1 day, Dr. Parsons may also write a prescription for an appetite suppressant. This will depend on your health, any other medical conditions you may have if this would be suitable for you. Dr.Parsons sees and evaluates each patient for each visit and currently Telemedicine appointments are available for weight loss. Instead of a true fasting diet, to stimulate weight loss and autophagy, Dr. Parsons may recommend a

fasting mimicking diet. You can visit our website for more information on our weight loss program at https://www.renovemedspa. org/weightloss. Fasting Mimicking Diet Fasting for 4 or 5 days is very difficult to observe. To overcome these challenges, Prof. Longo, under the sponsorship of the National Institutes of Health, developed the Fasting Mimicking Diet or FMD, a plant-based nutritional program which uses a special nutrition program to orchestrate the metabolic pathways responsible for cellular support and rejuvenation, such as autophagy. The formulation of the fasting mimicking diet (FMD) was developed over a decade of research & discovery at the Longevity Institute of the University of Southern California. Because several days of fasting can be difficult, Prof. Valter Longo developed The Fasting Mimicking Diet to nourish the body while keeping its cells in fasting mode. The ProLon formulation contains more than 73 plant-based proteins, fiber-rich source of carbs and healthy fats, in addition to minerals and vitamins (micronutrients). It has successfully gone through animal and human trials and was awarded several patents for its uniqueness. For these discoveries, TIME named ProLon discoverer, Prof. Valter Longo, among the top 50 most influential people in Health. With the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet, you can get the benefits of prolonged fasting, while eating food. Get Gym Results without going to the Gym -

Introducing TruSculpt flex – the solution to tone ab, thighs, and buttock muscles Michelle Parsons, MD is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in Aesthetic Medicine. Has circumstances kept you from doing the things you normally enjoy doing, such as being active either at the gym or outdoors? Have you been one of the many who spent way more time at home than you usually do, and now it shows a bit, and this contributed to being less than fit than you could have been otherwise? Well, it’s not your fault, this has happened to a lot of us. But we, at Renove Medical Spa, are here to help! We can help you get your fitness level back to where you were before and beyond that, with our TruSculpt flex program. What Is TruSculpt flex? TruSculpt flex is an innovative device that builds and strengthens muscles with dramatic and long lasting results. TruSculpt flex was developed by a California company for chiropractic use to enhance muscle tone, especially for the core or abdominal and back muscles. TruSculpt flex is now part of the Cutera family of medical devices, an American company with a long track record for innovative medical devices and has been available at Renove Medical Spa since December 2019. You can visit Cutera’s website at https://cutera.com/trusculptflex. What muscle areas can be treated with TruSculpt flex? The nice thing about TruSculpt flex is that it is a very versatile and flexible system and can be used to treat many muscle areas of concern. The most common areas that we tend to target with the TruSculpt flex are the core abdominal and back muscles. This

18 I Fall 2020

is an area that so many people lose strength, which can begin to affect posture, lead to back pain and weak abdominal muscles which can bow out and make the abdomen look larger. People who have this weak core, often have a difficult time correcting this weakness, as it is difficult to do typical core strengthening exercises, such as sit ups, pushups, and planks. But with the Trusculpt flex, patients can lie in comfort and have the abdominal and back muscles exercised for them. For example, in a 45 minute treatment session, the TruSculpt flex will perform the equivalent of 54,000 crunches! Other areas typically treated by TruSculpt flex are the thighs, calves, shoulders, biceps and triceps. The TruSculpt flex can also treat the buttock area for a non-surgical buttock lift. Multiple areas can be treated at once. How does the TruSculpt flex work? The TruSculpt flex utilizes direct muscle stimulation, administered through small pads that are placed over the muscles to be treated. The direct stimulation causes the muscles to contract involuntarily, much faster and harder than can be accomplished through normal exercise. Multiple body areas are typically treated at the same time, for example, the abdomen and low back are treated at the same time, both arms, both legs, are treated at the same time. Simultaneous areas treated can be tailored to each individual patient.

Since this direct muscle stimulation is so much greater than can be accomplished through normal exercise, muscle builds up quickly and also lasts a long time; and it also avoids injury that can happen from lifting heavy weights. A typical treatment plan would include 4 to 6 treatments spaced about a week apart. You will feel the muscles getting firmer and stronger right away, and the muscle development will peak 6 weeks after the last treatment, and lasts 4-6 months after the last treatment. Some patients

use this as an ongoing membership and maintain their results with a once monthly treatment. For more information on TruSculpt flex visit our website at https://www.renovemedspa. org/trusculpt-flex. If you would like to see if you are a candidate for direct muscle stimulation with TruSculpt flex please call the office for a telemedicine consult, or in person, for a complimentary consultation. Health & Wellness Richard J. Arrigo, D.O. Dr. Richard Arrigo is a board-certified gastroenterologist who graduated from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology and then proceeded to complete his Residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- New Jersey Medical School and then his fellowship at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Prior to his fellowship, Dr. Arrigo was in practice with the Liver Transplant program in Newark, NJ where he managed patients with severe liver disease. Dr. Arrigo is trained to perform Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), a procedure that uses sound waves to create visual images of the digestive tract, and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a procedure that is used to diagnose diseases of the gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas, and liver. Dr. Arrigo is also trained and certified to perform the Orbera Weight Loss Balloon procedure.

Alcohol-Related Liver Disease Care… Helping you prevent or cope with liver damage Your liver plays a vital role in your overall health. It is the organ that stores the vitamins, sugar, and iron you need for energy. It filters your blood from harmful toxins and waste. It also controls cholesterol, removes harmful bacteria, and metabolizes some of the medications you take. When your liver is injured, diseased or exposed to harmful toxins, your body cannot function properly. You may experience fatigue, weight loss, or yellowing of your skin or eyes.

If a problem is detected in time, we can help you manage your liver disease, so it does not progress. The liver is resilient and can regenerate as long as the damage is not too excessive.

When you drink responsibly, enzymes in your liver break down alcohol and eliminate it from your body. But the liver can only metabolize a limited amount of alcohol each hour. When you consistently consume more than your liver can process, you risk damaging this important organ, gradually killing its cells.

Fatty liver disease: When excess fat builds up in your liver, you have the earliest stage of alcohol-related liver disease and may have no symptoms. Potential symptoms can include fatigue, weakness and weight loss. You can resolve fatty liver disease if you stop drinking.

You do not have to get drunk to harm your liver. You may also not experience any symptoms until the damage has begun.

Alcoholic hepatitis: This form of hepatitis can occur from drinking too much alcohol. It ranges from mild to serious. It causes the liver to swell and, when severe, can lead to serious complications. A mild case can be treated.

Therefore, we recommend that if you do drink excessively, you should regularly have your liver checked. The specialists at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates will treat you with compassion and dignity and provide the most advanced tests to determine the health of your liver or the extent of damage.

Diagnosing alcohol-related liver disease There are three different types of alcohol-related liver disease. We perform liver function tests to determine the extent of damage and the best course of treatment for the disease.

Alcoholic cirrhosis: In this form, the liver becomes scarred and the damage may not be reversed. Unable to regenerate itself, the liver begins to fail. We can work with you to manage the progression of the disease. If

The County Woman’s Journal

you stop drinking, you may prevent and reverse damage. You can trust Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates to provide the most complete and accurate diagnosis of your condition — the first critical step toward

appropriate treatment. Your board-certified physician will answer all your questions and make sure you have a full understanding of the testing — what they measure and what the results mean for you. If further evaluation is necessary, we provide onsite

laboratory services for your convenience. If you or someone you love is suffering from potential alcohol-related liver disease, please contact us immediately for diagnosis and management at 908-483-4000.

Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates is available for appointments while paying special attention to the safety of our patients. We have expanded our virtual visit availability times and are available for in-office consultations and procedures. Here is how we will re-establish your access to care with the utmost safety: High-level employee protocols that include proper hand hygiene, face masks, eye protection, gloves, and appropriate employee monitoring • Meticulous cleaning and sanitizing of all surfaces, patient areas, and equipment • Stringent social distancing measures • Pre-screening of all patients for symptoms prior to their in-office appointment • Restricting visitors/companions from the office to reduce potential exposure to others. Only individuals accompanying patients who require assistance will be permitted to remain with the patient. • Patients are required to wear a face mask – please come to the office wearing one. If you are unable to obtain a mask, please contact the office before leaving your car and a member of our team will assist you. •

The safety of our patients, staff, and physicians is our top priority. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask. Health & Wellness HGA’s 9 Step Prescription for Good Digestive Health Improve Your Vitality & Eliminate Discomfort The key to good nutrition depends on two things: Eating the right foods and maintaining a strong digestive system that allows your body to break down and absorb the nutrients from the foods you eat In order to keep your digestive system in optimum shape, follow these guidelines: 1. Focus on fiber. Ideally, you should be eating 20 to 35 grams of fiber — or about 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories you eat. Fiber is the workhorse that slows down digestion and gives your body time to absorb the glucose it needs to produce energy. 2. Drink lots of water. Water helps move nutrients into your organs and tissues. It helps regulate your body temperature. An adequate amount of fluid also softens your stool for easier elimination. 3. Avoid processed foods. Many processed foods have little or no fiber, are too high in sodium, and often contain preservatives and other additives that you may be sensitive to. Some processed foods also contain lactose, which can give you gas. 4. Cut down on fat. Foods that are naturally high in fat or are fried in fat alter the digestive process and can lead to constipation or diarrhea. No more than 30% of the calories you consume should be fat; and only one-third of fat calories should be saturated fat. 5. Limit your alcohol consumption. Drinking too much alcohol can have a negative impact on every organ in your body. 6. Add yogurt to your food plan. Your digestive system contains healthy bacteria, known as probiotics, which help your digestion and fight off disease. Both yogurt and kefir contain probiotics. Eating them on a regular basis can help replace good bacteria lost by eating a poor diet, illness, stress and some medications and medical treatments. 7. Reduce your stress. Stress can be harmful to your digestion. It can cause your esophagus to go into spasms, your stomach to produce more acid and your colon to respond in a way that causes a change in your bowel habits and peptic ulcers. 8. Maintain a healthy weight. Your weight affects the efficiency of your digestive system. Even a few extra pounds can cause acid reflux, a condition where stomach contents flow back into your esophagus and cause heartburn. Losing weight will not only help you feel better, it can also prevent more serious conditions, such as hiatal hernia, non-alcohol fatty liver disease and colorectal cancer. 9. Exercise! Regular exercise improves your digestion by increasing blood flow to all your organs. It can help you lose weight and reduce stress. It can also strengthen the abdominal muscles and improve colon transit times along your gastrointestinal tract, helping your colon work more efficiently to eliminate food waste.

Social Distancing -Alone Together We are living in times that have never been experienced before. In the past century, there have been just four pandemics. The last one was in 1918. Life, as we know it has been put on hold. Events cancelled, school is now in a virtual landscape, and undoubtedly someone you know has been affected by this disaster. Thanks to modern technology, we are still able to connect with our friends and loved ones either through a Google hangout, Zoom, or House party. In dark times, it is more important than ever to be a beacon of hope for your friends and family. Families all over the nation are spending more time together than they have in years. With the absence of full calendars, practices and other after school activities, there is more time to connect. When this time passes (and it will) most of us will come out better for it; more spiritually connected and definitely closer to our loved ones. Although there is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19, the best way to prevent the spread is to avoid being exposed. Those who are in close contact with one another, usually within six feet, spread it from person to person. Respiratory droplets are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly inhaled in the lungs. Another silver lining The County 22 I FallWoman 2020 Magazine

The County Woman’s Journal

is that once you have contracted the virus it is unlikely you can get it a second time. Health officials have said that coronavirus antibodies are able to prevent a person who had the infection from getting it a second time. The best course of action at the present time is to minimize your chances of contacting the virus. We can do that in the following ways: • Washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place. • You can use a hand sanitizer (if soap and water are not readily available) that contains at least 60% alcohol. • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands • Sneeze into your elbow • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily – this includes doorknobs, light switches, keyboards, and phones.

It is easy to feel helpless during times like this. One way to alleviate those feelings are to try and help where you can and right now our nation is facing a major shortage in blood donations. Donating blood is essential to the health of a community and the need right now is dire. The Red Cross has expressed concern over future blood shortages. If you can, give blood so they can maintain a sufficient blood supply for the weeks to come. Never have we been given this respite from our daily schedules. The stress and anxiety from the unknowns can be daunting. Try and take some time for self-care and making yourself a priority during the days ahead.

Addressing The Fires Of Inflammation Functional Medicine Inflammation is the key in the rising epidemic of autoimmune disease, depression, and asthma.

By Dr. Cynthia Crosser

I

nflammation is our body’s innate mechanism to defend itself against negative stimuli such as pathogens, trauma, environmental toxins, and damaged cells. It is a physical response to emotional stress as well. The Latin terminology handed down from Celsus described the key features as: rubor (redness), calor (heat), tumor (swelling), and dolor (pain). All of these, except pain, describe the role of the vasculature. There is increased blood flow, vasodilatation, and increased vascular permeability. Inflammation can be acute such as with a laceration. Or it can become a systemic, chronic condition with a domino effect of chemical, hormonal, emotional and/or physical triggers. These could be found in foods, the environment, and even stress. When this inflammation continues, the immune system will start to attack healthy tissue resulting in illness and disease. Symptoms could be anything from gut issues, headaches, joint pain, to fatigue and weight gain. In joints it causes arthritis, in the inner blood vessels, heart disease and stroke. For the thyroid, inflammation can cause Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. As the immune system becomes weakened, cancer cells can become undetected and grow.

Testing would involve hsCRP (C-reactive protein) which is produced in the liver in response to infections and inflammation. IL-6 (interleukin 6) and ESR are other indicators of inflammation. Toxic metal testing, comprehensive stool analysis and organic acid testing will also detect systemic inflammation. Genetic testing can determine potential links to systemic inflammation. Even if you have normal CRP and then only sleep 4-5 hours a night for a few weeks, your level will elevate. If you are diabetic, due to the glycating effect of blood sugar, you will experience the effects of systemic inflammation. Candida overgrowth will cause inflammation as well as a stressful lifestyle.

with healthier choices, will assist in staving off the epidemic of chronic disease that is erroneously considered the aging process. Even a good detoxification program involving the liver will help (which will be my next article)!!! I also do a simple weight loss program which will help reduce inflammation. Put out the fire and get healthy!

NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and aspirin are not ideal. A recent study of 440,000 people found that these would increase the risk of heart attack and stroke deaths by 35 percent. What NOT to eat: forget the white starchy stuff, keep whole organic grains to a minimum, and avoid gluten. Eat a variety of vegetables (non-GMO and organic). Eat a moderate amount of fruit, especially berries, highquality fats and fatty fruits such as avocados, nuts and seeds, and high-quality proteins like fish, grass-fed beef, and organic poultry.

How to Travel Safely

with an Ill or Aging Loved One Summer is finally here — and so are summer vacations. For some, this means spontaneously packing the family up in the van and driving to the beach for a week of fun in the sun. For others, it means wondering if your loved one will even be able to make it out of the house. However, just because you have an aging or ill loved one, does not mean you need to postpone the family trip. With the right preparations, you can help your loved one enjoy a relaxing, worry-free vacation. 1. Get doctor’s approval. First and foremost, consult with your loved one’s primary care physician and ensure that they are cleared for travel. Talk with their doctor or Delaware Hospice about any concerns or risks in traveling. If necessary, use this opportunity to make sure that your loved one is up to date on all vaccinations and has refills for any prescriptions. 2. Arrange special services ahead of time. If you are planning on flying, contact the airline ahead of time and request wheelchair access at the airport, advanced boarding, or disabled seating, if necessary. You can do this for hotels, rental cars, and other vacation activities, as well. 3. Pack lightly, with essential items easily accessible. Make sure to have all the essentials handy — this includes medication (and copies of prescriptions), water and snacks, emergency phone numbers, sunscreen, and important documentation (passport, Medicare card, and travel insurance). If you are flying, be sure you take their medications in your carry-on. 4. Be flexible. Plan for plenty of breaks and lots of downtime to accommodate your loved one’s needs. Be realistic and patient about how much activity they can or cannot do, and adjust your plans to their capabilities. 5. Take extra precautions when traveling to the beach or somewhere hot. If traveling somewhere where you will be spending a lot of time in the sun, be sure to pack lots of sunscreen, loose fitting clothing, hats, and water. Make sure you know the signs of heatstroke. While traveling with an elderly or ill loved one requires a degree of preparation and caution, it can be a rewarding experience for everyone involved. After all, you are going on a vacation to either visit longdistance friends or experience a new part of the world — all while spending quality time with your loved ones. If you are thinking about taking a vacation with your aging and ill loved one, Delaware Hospice can offer more specific help and recommendations based on your situation. Our team of professionals offers a vast range of expert guidance, care, and support. Call us at (800) 838-9800 for more information.

Conditions Women Need to Know About Thyroid Disorders Sometimes this disorder ramps our metabolism, causing sudden weight loss, nervousness, irritability, and sweating. Yet you might experience the opposite as your metabolism slows to a crawl: unexplained weight gain, fatigue, and memory impairment are common signs, but symptoms sometimes develop so gradually that it may be years before you decide to see the doctor. What Happens? Nestled at the base of your neck, your thyroid gland is a tightrope walker, keeping your metabolism in balance by releasing hormones that control the rate at which your body burns energy. Some thyroid disorders, like Graves’ disease, cause your thyroid to pump out too much thyroid hormone. These disorders, termed hyperthyroidism, speed up your metabolism. Other thyroid disorders, like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, cause hypothyroidism by lowering your levels of thyroid hormone, thus slowing your metabolism. Why Women? Like multiple sclerosis, thyroid disorders are often caused by an autoimmune reaction. Hypothroidism arises when your immune system attacks the thyroid gland, preventing it from making the right amount of thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism can be caused when your immune system makes antibodies that trick your thyroid into making

too much thyroid hormone. Autoimmune reactions affect women more than men, so of the one percent of Americans with hyperthyroidism and 4.6 percent of Americans with hypothyroidism, most are women. Take Charge. Get tested regularly if a family member has a thyroid disorder or if you are over 60. There are many treatment options for thyroid disorders, and screening can catch the disease in its tracks.

the peritoneum. Endometriosis gets worse during your period because those out-of-place endometrial cells still respond to hormones, and like little bot cells, grow and bleed over the course of the menstrual cycle. Symptoms stop temporarily with pregnancy and subside entirely with menopause. Take Charge. You have a higher risk of developing endometriosis if your periods

Endometriosis The telltale sign is pelvic pain: menstrual cramps that are worse than usual, or pain during sex. It might be more painful to go to the bathroom during your period, or you might have bleeding between periods. However, some women experience no symptoms and discover they have endometriosis only when it is diagnosed as the cause of their infertility. More than five million Americans suffer from endometriosis, a problem unique to women. What Happens? Endometriosis is caused when tissue lining the uterus (called the endometrium) starts growing in other areas of your body. Endometriosis can arise if your menstrual flow goes awry. Menstrual blood containing endometrial cells usually passes out of the body, but in rare cases it travels in the opposite direction, ending up in your pelvic cavity where the endometrial cells implant in

last more than seven days, if your cycle is 27 days or less, if you have never had children, or if one of your family members has the disease. Endometriosis is not well understood, so there are no clear ways to prevent the disease. However, there are many treatments, like hormonal birth control, that can alleviate symptoms.

Health & Wellness Andrea E. Goldstein, M.D.

Dr. Goldstein is a board-certified gastroenterologist who graduated from Georgetown University for her medical degree and then went on to complete her Internal Medicine residency at North Shore University Hospital and did her Gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of Buffalo. Dr. Goldstein is at the forefront of the pelvic floor field, performing Interstim Peripheral Nerve Evaluation (PNE) for fecal incontinence. “Gastroenterology allows me to stay on the leading edge of medicine, bringing the newest, most effective treatments to patients with serious conditions. As your doctor, I strive to give you the best possible medical care you can receive and also an environment where you can feel comfortable. This starts with talking and listening closely to ensure that I get a complete picture of your medical history and symptoms, and also that you understand what you need to know to follow your treatment plan and return for the follow-up testing you need to protect your health. Giving you my time, compassion and full attention is as important as any test or procedure I perform.”

HEMORRHOIDAL TREATMENT Over half the population will experience some type of hemorrhoidal problem in their lifetime. You may be suffering in silence because you are too embarrassed to discuss the problem, or worry that the cure will be more painful than the problem itself. Now, advances in medicine have made hemorrhoid treatment fast and virtually painless. Your only challenge is finding a doctor who offers the right treatment and makes you feel comfortable receiving it. How do hemorrhoids develop? Hemorrhoids are simply swollen and engorged veins in the anal and rectal region. They are most commonly caused by changes in frequency of bowel movements, pressure of straining and hormonal changes or pressure during pregnancy. The veins swell and stretch and gradually lose the support of surrounding connective tissue. Hemorrhoids can cause the following symptoms: Itching/Burning Bleeding Protrusion during Bowel Movements Pain Hygiene Concerns Are all hemorrhoids the same? Hemorrhoids are actually classified into four stages

based upon severity. This helps determine which treatment is most appropriate for you. 1) Stage I: The hemorrhoids remain inside at all times. They do not protrude from the anus. 2) Stage II: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but reduce spontaneously. 3) Stage III: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but require manual insertion. 4) Stage IV: Fourth degree hemorrhoids: The most severe hemorrhoids always protrude and cannot be pushed back inside.

a variety of minimally invasive procedures that cut off blood flow to the hemorrhoid and cause it to shrink. In some cases your doctor may recommend a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue.

What are the treatment options for removing hemorrhoids? Effective hemorrhoid treatment depends on your specific medical condition. No doctor should recommend a solution without first doing an exam to rule out other potential causes of rectal pain or bleeding.

During the 60 SECOND procedure, the physician uses a gentle suction device to place a small rubber band around the tissue, just above the hemorrhoid. There are very few nerve endings in this area to cause any pain. The hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within a day or two. Research has shown that 99.8% of patients treated with the CRH O’Regan System ™ have no post-procedure pain and require no pain medication before, during, or after the procedure. There is no bowel prep, and you can drive yourself home afterwards. Another advantage, external hemorrhoids may also improve with this option.

Once you have been diagnosed with hemorrhoids, you will have different options to choose from, depending on the severity of your case. You may get adequate relief from increasing fiber in your diet, taking warm sitz baths and using topical creams. Treatment options include

What is the most painless method for treatment? An even less invasive and pain-free solution has recently been approved for internal hemorrhoids. This new banding option, the CRH O’Regan System ™ is considered the “gold standard” in treatment and almost eliminates the discomfort and recovery time associated with other hemorrhoid removal options.

Make an appointment with a specialist If you or a family member is ready to get permanent relief from hemorrhoids, you should make an appointment with a digest specialist for an accurate diagnosis and the most appropriate treatments

available. Only doctors who have been specially trained by CRH O’Regan System ™ trainers/doctors are licensed to provide this state-of-the-art banding treatment. Locally, it is performed at Hunterdon Gastroenterology Associates (HGA).

Understanding Peanut Allergies An advanced honors student, Alexandra has been a straight A student since kindergarten. Alexandra is a member of the National Honor Society, a Duke TIP Scholar, received honorable mention two years in a row at Canterbury School’s Science Fair, Regional First Place at HOSA for Nutrition and a Science Olympian member. Alexandra aspires to be a surgeon specializing in female cancer research and helping children with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a condition that affects the development of bones and other tissues of the face. Alexandra was diagnosed by Dr. Robert Wood, of the John Hopkins, at the age of 4 with a most severe peanut allergy after she went anaphylaxis after eating a peanut product. Alexandra feels the best way to prevent a severe reaction is education on food labeling, and fellow student education on this deadly condition. You or your child can correspond with Alexandra by email gallagherscg@aol.com, and she will help with any suggestions and experiences.

Presented by Alexandra Gallagher Signs and Symptoms There’s a difference between peanut allergy and peanut intolerance. Sometimes it can be difficult to know whether you are allergic or intolerant to peanuts. • Peanut intolerance. If you have peanut intolerance, you usually can eat small amounts of peanuts with only mild symptoms, such as indigestion or heartburn, or no reaction at all. A peanut intolerance doesn’t involve your immune system. • Peanut allergy. An allergy to peanuts involves an immune system response. Even a tiny amount of peanuts may trigger a serious allergic reaction. Tests can help determine whether you have true peanut allergy. Peanut allergies trigger an immune system response. Your immune system reacts to proteins found in peanuts. Exposure to peanuts or traces of peanuts may cause immediate reactions, such as itching, redness, swelling, shortness of breath, wheezing, nausea, abdominal pain, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness (anaphylaxis). The chemicals in peanuts can cause hives to develop on the areas of your skin that have come in contact with peanuts or traces of peanuts. Hives may spread to the rest of your body. Allergic reactions to peanuts usually occur within minutes after exposure, although reactions within an hour or so after ingestion are possible. Signs and symptoms can range in severity depending on which body systems are involved in a reaction and how much peanut protein you’ve been exposed to. The most serious and potentially deadly allergic reaction to peanuts is an anaphylactic response. If you are highly sensitive, an anaphylactic reaction can develop immediately after peanut exposure, causing the airways (bronchi) to constrict, making breathing difficult. Blood pressure may drop to life threateningly low levels, making you feel

30 I Fall 2020

dizzy or lose consciousness. Other serious signs and symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction include: • Wheezing • Rapid or weak pulse • Blueness of your skin, including your lips and nail beds • Diarrhea • Nausea and vomiting • Dizziness • Loss of consciousness Seek emergency medical care if you or someone else develops an anaphylactic reaction. Causes Peanut allergy is caused by an immune system malfunction. Your immune system identifies peanuts as harmful triggering the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to neutralize the peanut protein (allergen). The next time you come in contact with peanuts, these IgE antibodies recognize it and signal your immune system to release histamine and other chemicals into your bloodstream. Histamine and other body chemicals cause a range of allergic signs and symptoms. Histamine is partly responsible for most allergic responses, including runny nose, itchy eyes, dry throat, rashes and hives, nausea, diarrhea, labored breathing and even anaphylactic shock. Exposure to peanuts can occur in three ways: • Direct contact. The most common cause of peanut allergy is direct contact with peanuts. This means exposure via all routes of contact usually through eating peanuts, but including kissing or touching someone who’s been in direct contact with peanuts. • Cross contact. This is the unintended introduction of peanuts into a product. It’s generally the result of exposure to peanuts during processing or handling of a food product. • Inhalation. An allergic reaction may occur if you inhale dust or aerosols containing peanuts, such as that of

peanut flour or peanut oil cooking spray. Common food products that can trigger peanut allergy symptoms if they contain peanut proteins include: • Peanut butter • Peanut flour • Ground or mixed nuts • Baked goods, such as cookies and pastries • Ice cream and frozen desserts • Energy bars • Salad dressing • Cereals and granola • Grain breads • Marzipan (a molding confection made of nuts, egg whites and sugar) • Nougat Peanuts may be present in not so obvious foods including: • Arachis oil. This is another name for peanut oil. Pure peanut oil usually doesn’t trigger allergic reactions because peanut proteins are usually removed during processing. However, peanut oil can become contaminated with peanut proteins. • Artificial tree nuts. Peanuts can be flavored to taste like other nuts, such as walnuts or pecans. • Chocolate candies. Some chocolate candies are produced on equipment that is also used for processing peanuts or peanut containing foods. • Cultural foods. Some African, Chinese, Indonesian, Mexican, Thai and Vietnamese dishes often contain peanuts or are exposed to peanuts during restaurant preparation. • Nut butters. Nut butters, such as cashew nut butter, are often processed by the same equipment used to make peanut butter. • Specialty items. Foods sold in bakeries and ice cream shops may come in contact with peanuts. • Sunflower seeds. Many brands of sunflower seeds are processed on equipment also used to produce peanuts. Risk factors It isn’t clear why some people develop allergies while others don’t. However, people with certain risk factors have

a greater chance of developing peanut allergy: • Family history of allergies. You’re at increased risk of peanut allergy if other allergies, especially other types of food allergies, are common in your family. A child’s first allergic reaction to peanuts usually occurs between ages 1 and 2. • Personal history of peanut allergy. About 20 percent to 25 percent of children with peanut allergy outgrow it. However, even if you seem to have outgrown peanut allergy, there is still a small risk it will recur. • Altered immune system. According to recent studies, the prevalence of peanut allergy has doubled in young American children in the last five years. Although reasons are unknown, some scientists believe that the destroying of many infectious diseases may have altered the immune system. Other experts suggest that improved hygiene is involved, proposing that higher standards of cleanliness in Western countries may have confused our immune systems, increasing the chances of developing allergies later in life, when the immune system is usually more prepared to prevent allergies from occurring. Treatment Medications, such as antihistamines, may reduce symptoms of peanut allergies. These drugs can be taken after exposure to peanuts to control your reaction and help relieve discomfort. However, the only way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid peanuts and peanut proteins altogether. Despite your best efforts, you may still come into contact with peanuts and have a severe reaction. In this case, you may need an emergency injection of adrenaline (epinephrine) and a trip to the emergency room. If you’re at risk of having a severe reaction, you may need to carry injectable epinephrine with you at all times. For more information call your pediatrician.

Women Publishing Entrepreneurs Wanted Pamela J. Rizzo Thirteen years ago I had never even heard of the Women’s Journal, and today I can honestly say the Women’s Journal most definitely changed my life. I had always made good money with my different business ventures, but the Women’s Journal has given me the freedom to control my own financial life, and also have the freedom to enjoy my family. I took a concept and gave it my own touch, and with hard work and consistently following the concept that I was trained in I have built an extremely successful paper.

Robin Coppinger I have been the owner of the Bucks County Women’s Journal for 7 years. It has been a pleasure to be part of the National Women’s Journal family. I have enjoyed publishing the paper, and have had a rewarding and successful career. I also appreciate the continued help and support I have received from both Bob Kapke and other owners over the years. I look forward to working with Bob for many years to come.

Celeste Kline Purchasing the Women’s Journal has been the best decision I have ever made. Not only giving me financial freedom, but allowing me to make my own schedule and my own business decisions. I only wish I had done it sooner.

Christie Cook The Women’s Journal has been an incredibly rewarding business venture for me. As the publisher for the Chesterfield Women’s Journal, I contribute to the growth of my Contributor’s businesses, and help women, in my Journal community, make wiser choices. I have found a new love in the Women’s Journal, building something that will both impact businesses and educate women, while creating a legacy for my daughter. The support and mentoring, that I have been blessed to have, from some of the most successful publishers in the Journal syndicate, has helped me grow and develop my business. The support and guidance has been consistent from the moment I made the decision to become a publisher. I love what I do, and I will continue to build and grow my business as a publisher of the Women’s Journal.

Lynn K. Wolf With the experience of publishing nine different County Woman publications, I can confidently inform you that this is one of the most exciting, rewarding, and successful business ventures for women entrepreneurs in any part of the nation. I originally born and raised in Minnesota and I have lived on the West Coast and the East Coast and many states in between. Some of my past careers include being a National Insurance Account Executive, Retail Operations Manager, Certified New Jersey Teacher and Teacher of the Year, but of these, I have being a County Woman Publisher to be the most gratifying on many levels. I guarantee that you will meet many incredible business owners and community leaders. Your publication will be the critical component in helping to launch a new business and/or successfully grown an existing business. The personal rewards are endless.

Linda Hunsicker Publishing three Women’s Journals is very rewarding and fits with my high energy lifestyle. It allows me to be my own boss, be creative and work with the public. Recently, I opened the Finger Lakes Woman and it has been very well received. Now, I can go to my vacation home in upstate NY, make money and be respected and recognized as a local business woman with a great educational publication.

Dorri C. Scott Becoming a Publisher has been a dream come true for me. Always a writer, I am an educator and continue teaching as a college Professor. Every two months, I “Give birth and deliver a new child” – my magazines in 2 counties. YES! I love what I do and am growing. The opportunity has been lucrative - though the learning curve has been keen, the support from Bob Kapke has been priceless. Passionate about what I do, over the past 18 months I have met, connected and helped so many people. The powerful resource is one that I highly recommend if you want to work hard, stay focused and make money too. Have the heart and work ethic to do something for both you and others? I highly recommend that you take the step and join a phenomenal group of publisher/owners who are happy going to work every day. Do it and don’t look back!

Lisa Odenwelder

Ingrid Wolfenden

Fayetta (Fay) M. Blake

Lisa Odenwelder, of Seaford, has been free of chemotherapy for Breast Cancer since May 2019. She was diagnosed at the age of 36, after she persisted with informing her doctors of pain she felt in her left breast, which was initially brushed aside as normal age related changes. However, her PCP, Jessica Baxter, was the first to listen to her concerns. Lisa attributes her and her medical assistant, Diane, surgeons, Dr. Walker and Dr. Pellegrino, oncologists, Dr. ElAyass and Dr. Im, and the wonderful oncology nurses at PRMC to her survival. Lisa and her husband, both pharmacists, share a son and daughter, who were 3 and 1 years old when she was diagnosed. Choosing to undergo a double mastectomy, she would later learn through genetic testing and analysis of the cancer, that she was BRCA2+, and at an intermediate risk of cancer recurrence. Knowing her husband and children needed her, she made the ultimate decision to do everything possible to reduce that risk of the cancer returning, and underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy, followed by reconstructive surgery and radical hysterectomy. Although fearful at times of what the future would hold, or how long she would exist on this Earth, Lisa persevered with the enormous support of her husband, family, friends who are family, and the kindness and generosity of complete strangers. Throughout her battle with cancer, her greatest life lesson is to not ask G-d “Why?,” but to know that He will never leave your side throughout your journey.

In May of 2015, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After 2 major surgeries, my oncologist exclaimed he would not work with me because I refused chemotherapy. Instead, I found an Integrative doctor who said he will work with me as long as I did what I was told. And so came to be a change for the better in every aspect. I learned how far we have come from good nutrition and now more than ever was it time for me to find it again. That being said I “thought” I was eating healthy before. But when you travel along a journey of this kind you learn a lot. My number one enemy was refined white sugar. Cancer grows and thrives on sugar. So now my label reading was absolutely mandatory and I was finding sugar in everything! Long story short, after my surgeries and change in eating clean I still found myself in pain due to inflammation. That’s when I found a Program that completely gave me my quality of life back and it is now my joy to offer it to you the reader. My business is Optimal Health. Everyone has their own level and it would be my pleasure to guide and give you structure in finding your own. This program is easy, costneutral, and works! I no longer experience pain from inflammation & arthritis. I am a certified health coach as my heartfelt career and a published children’s book author as my humorous hobby. Do not hesitate to contact me if you yourself or a loved one is suffering from inflammation and pain, excess weight, acid reflux, high blood pressure, or cholesterol. It’s my passion helping others find their own level of Optimal Health! Contact me at Misswolfee@aol.com Phone:(302)233-3595 Facebook: Optimal Health.

Upon returning to the shore an opportunity presented itself in taking on the roll as the Mentoring Coordinator for WSW. In furthering her career, Jocelyn registered at Wor-Wic Community College to finish an associate degree in Medical Office Management. I want to form a relationship with these strong, beautiful women like I did previously as a medical assistant.” Jocelyn is a great addition to Women Supporting Women’s team as she looks forward to guiding breast cancer survivors, their families and friends through their breast cancer journeys.

Hearing & Your Health Falls

By Jessica M. Bell, Au.D. Director, Riddle Audiology

P

revention and wellness are vital factors in today’s outlook on healthcare. A variety of well-known health conditions show a strong connection to hearing loss. Treatment options for hearing loss, such as hearing aids, have shown to benefit overall health. Conditions that have shown to have a link to hearing loss include (but are not limited to):

Diabetes The National Institutes of Health News showed in a 2008 study that hearing loss is two times more common in adults with Type 2 diabetes compared to those without diabetes. The nerves and blood vessels of the inner ear can become damaged due to pathological changes that are commonly seen in diabetes patients, resulting in hearing loss.

Cardiovascular Poor cardiovascular health can cause decreased blood flow to the inner ear which, ultimately, can result in hearing loss particularly in the low frequency range. Therefore, if a hearing loss is determined in the low frequency range (think, the bass on a piano), this could be an early predictor for a potential cardiovascular event.

Falls, particularly in the elderly, can be attributed to a variety of factors – one, less commonly discussed, is untreated hearing loss. A study completed by US News found that people with a mild, 25 decibel hearing loss, are 3 times more likely to sustain a fall and for every additional 10 decibels of hearing loss, the risk increased by 1.4 times for falling. Dr. Frank Lin indicates that “people who can’t hear well might not have good awareness of their overall environment, increasing the potential to trip and fall.”

Cognitive Decline Many research studies have shown that hearing loss may be linked to the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. People who have untreated hearing loss increase the amount of effort needed to understand speech which contends with normal cognition and could result in withdraw from social situations. By withdrawing from social situations, the brain is no longer exposed to typical daily communication which can decrease the amount of grey matter in the brain.

When a person’s ability to communicate effectively decreases with hearing loss, the likelihood of withdrawing from social interaction increases. By slowly withdrawing from social events a person once loved to participate in, the more isolated they become. Eliminating social activities is a red flag for depression. The National Council on Aging found that 36% of patients who begin to wear hearing aids experienced improved overall mental health while 34% increased social engagement. Understanding the link between hearing loss and other medical conditions is important to a person’s overall health. It is important for patients to have open communication with their physicians if they suspect hearing loss so that appropriate recommendations and referrals can be made to an audiologist for testing and treatment options.

The Riddle Experience The audiologists at Riddle Hospital share the same goals that you do – to improve hearing health as well as increase your ability to understand and participate in your most difficult listening environments. A comprehensive audiological evaluation followed by a listening needs assessment and live hearing aid demonstration will allow the audiologist to make the best recommendations for a hearing treatment plan tailored to your listening needs.

Cancer Treatments Some chemotherapy and radiation treatments can cause ototoxicity which means the drugs can cause chemical damage to the inner ear or tiny hair cells in the cochlea. The damage can be temporary or permanent depending on the type of medication used. Additionally, ototoxic medications can also cause tinnitus (ringing in the ears) with or without the presence of hearing loss.

At the Riddle Hospital Audiology and Hearing Aid Center, part of Main Line Health, we provide clinical evaluation and cutting-edge treatment that not only improves patient outcomes, but improves our neighbors’ lives. Photography

Picture This… C.M.Baker Photography Photography may have changed over the decades, but sharing photos is still something we do daily in our business and personal lives, and no matter how we’re using photos these days, they continue to bring smiles to our faces and help educate & inform us. We may not always remember everything that happened at an event; however we don’t have to worry about that because photos will always be a way to remind us about our life experiences, good times and cherished moments. The best and least stressful way to use photography at one of your events is to contact Mike Baker, with C.M. Baker Photography. When planning events there is already a lot to do, so you can take one thing off your list by letting Mike handle one of the most important parts of your celebration. This will take that stress off you, and allow you to focus on other things. By hiring Mike, you have several choices. You can use an indoor photo booth that

doesn’t take up a lot of space, but brings a lot of joy to any event. The black photo booth is only 5 feet by 5 feet being compact to fit any space, especially for smaller venues where space is a commodity. Mike also offers a white inflatable photo booth. This is decked out with lights and gives a more colorful flare to the classic photo booth. Or you could use the outdoor Shasta Shutterbug Photo Booths. The Shasta Shutterbugs are mostly used outside and can be used for an outdoor or indoor event (only if you have an 8ft x 8ft doorway). With much of the Sussex County and Eastern Shore Maryland having many wedding barns, it has become quite a wedding barn venue. The original Shasta I was a 1969 Compact Shasta Camper converted into a white decorative photo booth on wheels. The Shasta II is barn themed with a white barnwood interior. The Shasta II was a 1964 Shasta Compact Camper. Both Shasta’s provide added fun to your outdoor space, and will keep your guests coming back. All the booths print keepsake photo strips, provide customized props and are a wonderful opportunity for your guests to have a lot of fun and take photos home with them to share for many years to come. Plus, all photo strips are in color, and have customized text and designs to suit your event needs, and print in just a few

seconds. C.M. Baker Photography covers most of the Delmarva Peninsula going south and up to southern PA going north. In addition to the photo booths and Shasta’s taking the photos, Mike has been doing weddings for almost 30 years, and is one of the few wedding photographers that print out 8x10s at the wedding for all to view, and for the bride and groom to take home with them. Mike is also certified by the FAA for commercial license Part 107, and is able to do aerial images of homes for real estate companies, or anything else, and is now using a drone. With his extensive experience for close to 30 years, Mike is equipped to do onsite printing at events, and can do headshots for promotional purposes including news articles, social media, brochures and business cards. It doesn’t matter whether you have a corporate event, father-daughter dance, wedding, graduation, birthday, anniversary, or special needs. C.M. Baker has something for you to keep your memories alive, and keep you smiling for decades to come!

DIABETES MELLITUS IN PETS Approximately 10% of the human population in the US are affected with diabetes. Many pet owners do not realize that this disease can also affect their cats and dogs. In dogs, about one in every 300 dogs will be diagnosed in their lifetime and in cats the number is slightly higher with one in 280 becoming diabetic. Being “cats and dogs”, of course their type of diabetes are different from each other but their symptoms are the same.

Pets usually present for drinking and urinating more often and in larger amounts than usual. Weight loss despite a ravenous appetite is also a presenting complaint. If your pet develops any of these symptoms it is important to see your veterinarian as quickly as possible so that your pet can be diagnosed quickly and treatment can begin. Insulin is produced by the pancreatic beta cells. Diabetes occurs from one of two situations-either the cells do not produce enough insulin, or the animal’s body has a systemic resistance to insulin. In either case, there will be elevated blood glucose, which can interfere with the body’s absorption of nutrients. The main causes of diabetes in pets are obesity, chronic pancreatitis, Cushing’s disease, autoimmune disease and certain breeds (Dachshunds, Yorkshire Terriers, Maine Coon and Siamese cats are examples) are also prone to developing it in their lifetimes. If your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, your veterinarian will have

you administer insulin at home, along with diet change, exercise and monitoring the blood glucose level. It is important to follow the veterinarian’s instructions, as untreated diabetes can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis, cataracts, and kidney disease.

DIABETES IN CATS It is possible in some cases for cats to go into diabetic remission and no longer require insulin if owners are diligent about food and insulin administration in the first 60-90 days of treatments. The rate of cats being able to stop insulin administration varies from 15-60% in various studies. Your cat will be placed on a special veterinary diet, begin twice-daily insulin administration and the owner will be asked to monitor the cat’s glucose readings throughout the day. This is easier for owners now that there are continuous monitoring devices, which attach to the animal and are read by a scanner or phone. There are applications on phones, which you will be asked to use to keep records of readings as well as food and water intake. Cats are therefore more like humans with type 2 diabetes who are sometimes able to discontinue insulin with changes in diet and exercise. DIABETES IN DOGS In contrast, diabetic dogs are more like humans with type 1 diabetes and will be on insulin for the rest of their lives to maintain control of the disease. Diet, exercise and monitoring are still the mainstays of treatment. Diet in both cats and dogs is a low-

The County Woman’s Journal

carbohydrate, high fiber diet. Also, diabetics are predisposed to urinary tract infections because the body “dumps” the sugar that cannot be processed and that attracts bacteria. Another effect that diabetes can have is the development of cataracts. One study showed that 80% of dogs go blind by year 3 of treatment. Having their pet diagnosed with diabetes is often difficult for owners to handle. Your veterinarian team should go over everything with you

and anyone else in your home that will be helping to care for the pet. There are different insulin products and syringes and the team should teach you how to handle the insulin your pet is placed on as well as how to administer the insulin. Food choices will be explained and things such as snacks will be addressed. After the initial overwhelm, you will soon be comfortable with everything and your pet’s clinical signs will stop. Pets with treated diabetes can live normal healthy lives.

Pineapple Princess Swimwear O

A beachy boutique specializing in swim and resort wear for women of all shapes and sizes

Owner Donna has always had a passion for swimwear. Studying fashion merchandise at University of Delaware and being a local resident at the beach in southern Delaware, she started making custom swimwear back in 1991. For the next 19 years she would fit women of all shapes and sizes into custom made and branded swim which in return grew an amazing cliental. Her daughter Devon became her shadow and grew up sitting on her cutting table watching her every move. Devon learned sewing by making scrunchies to match each of the custom swimsuits-whoa! Scrunchies! Flashback! Then she began doing fittings on women and that passion she witnessed in her mother became her own. Like mother, like daughter Devon went on to study fashion merchandise at University of Delaware. In 2006, Donna got an opportunity to open her own swimwear boutique in Rehoboth Beach,DE. So with her daughter by her side and the support of her amazing family, the Pineapple Princess was born! Now, you might ask why the name Pineapple Princess?.... Right before officially opening the boutique, the family suffered some tremendous losses. Two of Donnas sister in laws (Devons aunts) passed away. One loved Hawaii and the other had a favorite song. That song is titled “ Pineapple Princess” by Annette Funicello. So this only seemed fitting to honor those remarkable women by naming the business in their memories. So now with Devon as her store manager and family and friends helping along the way, the Pineapple Princess has entered its 14th year of business. We offer alterations right on premise to make sure every gal that comes into the boutique is properly fitted and leaves feeling beautiful inside and out! We offer sizes ranging from XS-3X (0-24) and specialize in bra sizes A-I. There is no body type we can’t fit-that’s our goal! Taking pride in the business is what makes the Pineapple Princess continue to grow And making sure women have the best experience possible...let’s be honest, trying on swimwear is usually not the highlight of every gals day... We hope to keep making gals smile and can’t thank our amazing customers throughout the years for all the love and support! Cheers to another summer and see you all at the beach! * Donna & Devon SOME OF OUR FAVORITE PIECES ALL AVAILABLE IN STORE TO PURCHASE Our store sells large varieties of swimwear in many brands dedicated to all ages of gals. Guiding You Home “In a few days we’ll be moving into our new home in Lewes, DE. We’re so excited to get to live in Sussex County and to enjoy the allure of this enchanting area. All of this was made possible as a result of our good fortune in finding an outstanding realtor like Terry O’Brien. She listened carefully and quickly assessed our home buying goals. The outcome was a fabulously positive search and a great interaction with the seller. Terry was the catalyst throughout this entire experience. We recommend her highly to anyone searching for a home in Delaware.” - The Downeys “As the listing agent for our property, Terry did an outstanding job when helping to stage the house. She was honest with the appearance of our house and we made suggested improvements. We settled on a realistic asking price and again her honesty was greatly appreciated and very accurate. She never dropped the ball at any time during the process and went above and beyond by being present during the inspection and when work needed to be done due to us living out of town. The result was a great buyer and easy closing. Our experience with Terry was excellent. While Terry started out as our Realtor, we now consider her our friend. We have recommended her to others and will continue to do so in the future.” - The Handlins “We liked our neighbors and neighborhood in Sussex County, DE so much that we decided to sell our vacation home and purchase a larger one to which we could eventually retire permanently. We first engaged the services of a major regional realtor and after two and a half years without even an offer we ended our contract with them and discovered Terry O’Brien. Terry gave us specific advice as to how to stage our home for sale. We followed her advice and she proceeded to do her work. The house

then sold in two and a half weeks! As a bonus, she also introduced us to the property in the same community which was exactly what we were seeking. Settlement on the sale of our first home and the purchase of the new one occurred shortly thereafter. We will gladly recommend Terry to anyone who is seeking to sell or purchase a home.” - The Regars “My husband Glen and I were looking to purchase a condo/house in Delaware to eventually retire to part of the year and we were very fortunately introduced to Terry O’Brien through a colleague of hers who happens to be a close friend of mine. I knew I would be in great hands, however, I had no idea the wonderful experience that we were in for! Terry really does her homework! She is thorough beyond words, making sure that her client sees every last opportunity. She dedicates as much time as needed to give the client a full, well rounded experience. Not only did we look at condos in various neighborhoods, we were given a guided tour of Lewes and Rehoboth, etc. and shown all of the important historical, culinary, etc. spots to ensure we did not miss anything! I cannot thank Terry enough for all that she did for us and, not only is she our Realtor (I would send her to anyone who was looking), but, mostly, she is our friend.” - Sincerely, Rosanna Hill “If you’re looking to buy or sell a home, Terry is your agent! She listens deeply to what you want in a home, provides expert guidance and is one of the most patient agents I’ve worked with. Terry is committed to helping you find a home that’s best for you. She helps you to consider all aspects of buying and selling. Additionally, Terry has a fantastic eye for architecture and design. She is dedicated to her clients and extremely conscientious. We couldn’t have been more pleased to have been able to work with Terry during an important time in our lives.” - Melissa Tihinen

You Need a Realtor. Here’s Why

Whether you’re buying, selling, or just curious - real estate fascinates most of us. What other investment keeps our families safe, happy and together?

Looking out for your best interests is my highest priority.

If you’re a buyer, a good realtor will help you to discover all that Sussex County has to offer and help you to find the home of your dreams whether it’s new construction or a re-sale. As with sellers, there are many points of success or failure along the route to a successful closing. We’re here for you!

If you own a home, you want to know what it’s worth – even if you’re not planning to sell anytime soon. Knowing if you’ve made a good investment gives you certainty and options. If you’re looking to buy, you want to know what kind of home you can afford and where you’ll best be able to live your life.

We work with trusted professional partners: inspectors, attorneys, lenders, etc., who also keep your best interests in mind and help the buying and selling process move smoothly.

A real estate agent’s single biggest responsibility is to represent you – to be your go-to ally and expert. The right agent will give you the confidence to sail through the waters of Delaware real estate. When my husband John and I first moved to Southern Delaware, we were surprised to learn that the charming young man in the community sales office was not a licensed real estate agent. Honestly, as I work with my buyer clients looking for new construction, I’m still shocked. When I bought homes in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and beyond, I always had a skilled realtor who was looking out for my best interests. Many of the salespeople in Sussex County’s new home sales offices are not licensed agents – they’re employees of the new community developers and represent the best interests of their employer. As a REALTOR, I am held to the National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics.

their agents, which are far more involved than offer price alone. We help you to navigate the potential bumps in the road on the way to closing.

Guiding You Home As a REALTOR, I work diligently for my clients. In addition, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage is equally committed to my clients’ well-being. If you are considering selling your home, we offer guidance as you prepare your property to present it in its best light – often referred to as staging. We provide information and guidance to determine the best listing price to produce the most qualified buyers and we market your property in creative ways that have proven to be successful. We assist in evaluating all aspects of offers from buyers and

Prior to the conference, both parties select a neutral person (or persons) to act as the mediator. The issues that the parties aim to resolve at the mediation are identified, and each party sends paperwork to the mediator and explains their point of view. One of the parties begins the negotiations process prior to the start of mediation. After the initial offer or demand is made, the mediator handles all further negotiations between the parties, by relaying offers and demands back and forth.

Do I need an attorney? No, there is no requirement to have an attorney represent you in mediation; however, a skilled injury attorney will be able to provide invaluable advice as to the value of your claim, the applicability of the law to your particular facts, and will help guide you through the process. Most injury attorneys offer free consults and work on a contingency fee, meaning they get paid out of the settlement funds. This puts them on the same side of the bargaining table as you- the more they can get for you, the more they earn for themselves. A consultation with a local injury attorney can help you understand the strengths and weaknesses of your case, the value of your injuries, and can pave the way to mediation. Please call or text my office to arrange for your own free consultation!

In an injury case, the mediator sits down (either in-person or virtually) with the injured party and their attorney to discuss negotiations. There is typically a confidentiality agreement that is signed, and the opposing party is not in the same room and not on the same conference call. This way, the injured person can talk freely and openly without fear that the mediator will relay anything that is said. After the mediator conferences with the injured party, they then meet privately with the opposing party to relay the opening demands. The opposing party then has the opportunity to have the same confidential conversations with the mediator, and relays the offer to the injured party by way of the mediator. The mediator then returns to the injured party to let them know what the offer is, and negotiations continue in this manner until hopefully the issue is resolved. Why go to Mediation? Mediation can be an informal, cost-effective tool to resolve many different kinds of claims. The costs associated with engaging in mediation are typically a fraction of the costs associated with going to trial or other types of hearings. Even better, many times mediations can be conducted within an hour or two, as opposed to sitting in trial for several days or weeks. Many injured parties and seasoned attorneys prefer this expeditious and (relatively) inexpensive process over the rigors and uncertainties of a jury trial. What happens after Mediation? After mediation, the parties and their attorneys will execute a settlement agreement, and final settlement documents will be exchanged. The settlement agreement is usually signed prior to leaving the mediation conference, and then final settlement paperwork is typically sent and executed within the next 7-10 days. Once the final settlement documentation is returned and approved, the settlement funds are usually available within 30 days.

Business When you retire, can you afford to help your loved ones? “We help serious, long-term individual investors achieve their financial goals by understanding their needs and implementing tailored solutions.”

Karen M. Wearden, AAMS,® CRPC ® Financial Advisor Edward Jones Investments

Consider this: Seven in ten retirees say they are willing to offer financial support to their families, even if it could jeopardize their own financial future, according to the Edward Jones/ Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. However, the same study found that 72% of retirees also say one of their biggest fears is “becoming a burden on their families.” How can you be generous to your grown children and grandchildren without giving away so much money that you end up being a burden to them? You’ll have to plan ahead. Ask yourself some key questions: How much will I need in retirement?

What sources of income can I rely on? How much can I afford to give away? And finally, How can I protect my financial independence from threats such as need for long-term care? The sooner you think about these issues, the better. With careful planning, you can be generous to your loved ones while staying financially stable enough to avoid becoming a burden to them. For more information on the Four Pillars Study, go to edwardjones.com/ NewRetirement.

Why Whole Life Insurance with a Long Term Care Rider? policy is there when you and your family need it.

By Debbie Crawford Why Whole Life Insurance? You want to make sure your

Whole life insurance is permanent insurance. You pay a level premium each year which is applied to the cost of insurance and to cash value. This asset called whole life insurance with it’s “pool of money” is available for a life event (if necessary) and gives

you permission to spend down your retirement assets while still leaving a financial legacy to your family. Why a Long Term Care Rider? It’s the most cost effective way of having Long Term Care (LTC) coverage available if and when you need it. Long term care costs can financially ruin you and your family

or worse...you can’t afford the care. The cost of a pure LTC policy is high. Insurance companies can’t guarantee level premiums each year because they are paying claims at a high rate. So, even if you get a pure LTC policy, you don’t know how much or how often the premiums will increase, and if you can’t afford the increase, they can decrease your benefits.

Monthly long term care costs can be in excess of $5,000 a month. These costs vary from state to state. A pure LTC policy is a “use it or lose it” policy meaning that you can only use it if you have a claim. As a rider on a whole life policy, the premium is much less and you have a permanent insurance policy with the ability to have LTC coverage.

Please allow me the opportunity to discuss these options with you and help you create a financial plan that will continue to work for you for years to come.

Buyer Beware: Tips for Safe Online Shopping We would welcome the opportunity to:

Presented by Chris Theis The Christmas holiday is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about buying your gifts. Millions of shoppers are bypassing brick-and-mortar stores, as well as their respective websites, in favor of purchasing those gifts or personal items from individual online sellers. For many people, sites like Craigslist and eBay offer a chance to save on everyday items and luxury products, both new and used—all from the comfort of their own homes. Yet, while online shopping may be a convenient way to find deals and oneof-a-kind items, it’s important to protect your identity and financial information, particularly when dealing with individual sellers. Before you purchase anything listed on an online classified ad, auction, or marketplace site, keep the following precautions in mind. Online classifieds On classified sites run by newspapers and popular venues like Craigslist, sellers tend to offer used items and may be open to negotiation. Since most transactions are done in cash, there’s little buyer protection. To stay safe: • Never wire funds. If a seller asks you to wire payment using Western Union or MoneyGram, you’re likely dealing with a scammer. • Safeguard your personal information. Sellers on Craigslist and similar sites don’t need your personal financial information, such as credit card numbers. To keep your information safe, it’s best to pay with cash. • Don’t go it alone. Always take someone with you when meeting a seller. Be sure to tell a friend or family member where you’ll be and take

your cell phone with you. • Pick up in a public place. Choose a busy location to meet the seller. If you’re picking up the item at the seller’s house, it’s particularly important to have a friend or family member join you. Online auctions Online auction sites like eBay let you view and bid on products from around the globe. Some sites also allow you to buy items outright instead of bidding. To stay safe: • Read the fine print. Before you enter a bid, be sure to review the entire listing, as well as the sales policies of the auction site. Remember: you win, you pay. Once you’ve won an auction, you’re obligated to complete the transaction. • Check out buyer feedback. Auction sites let buyers post feedback on their purchases, which can give you insight into a seller’s business practices. Be sure the seller has a high rating before making a purchase. If lackluster feedback prompts you to hesitate, it’s probably best to look for the item elsewhere. • Pay with a credit card or PayPal account. Using a debit card linked to your checking account may not be safe, as most debit cards don’t offer fraud protection. You may also want to consider buyer protection; eBay offers such a plan that covers many items purchased on its site. • Beware of fraudulent e-mails. After you’ve made a purchase, be wary of any unusual e-mails you may receive. Avoid opening suspicious messages or clicking on links they contain. Online marketplaces Online marketplaces such as Amazon, Etsy, and Overstock are one-stop shops where

Hummingbirds 101 A guide to the basics of understanding, attracting, and feeding hummingbirds Presented by Connie Marshall

If you love hummingbirds and want to attract them to your home, you will enjoy this concentrated collection of information! You may also wish to visit the website of the Hummingbird Society: www.hummingbirdsociety.org

Flowers

Flowers grown in a garden or in containers are nature’s hummingbird feeder. The right combination of wildflowers and exotic fl owers appropriate for your growing zone will attract hummingbirds, increase the number of small insects that hummingbirds require for their survival, and will bring beauty and interest to your garden. The ideal hummingbird flower contains nectar at the base of a single tubular flower; this shape and lack of fragrance discourages insect use. Hummingbirds need to feed every 15 minutes and may visit as many as 1,000 fl owers each day, so flowers need to be numerous and constantly regenerating. Red flowers are popular, but flowers of other colors also contain nectar and attract hummingbirds. Seek flowers with a long bloom period and make sure that a great hummingbird flower is in bloom at every point during your hummingbird season, especially during the spring and fall migration periods. Additionally, it is important to provide “cover” in the form of mature trees and thick shrubbery.

Some of the best and easiest to grow hummingbird flowers include: Lonicera sempervirens (Trumpet Honeysuckle) Red Monarda ‘Jacob Cline’(Bee Balm) Cuphea ‘David Verity’ Salvia guaranitica (Blue Anise Sage)

54 I Fall 2020

Salvia coccinea (Scarlet Sage) Agastache rupestris (Sunset Hyssop) Campsis radicans (Trumpet Creeper) Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower) Fuchsia triphylla (Honeysuckle Fuchsia) Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii (Turk’s Cap) Justicia spicigera(Mexican Honeysuckle) Ipomopsis rubra (Standing Cypress) Nicotiana mutabilis(Flowering Tobacco) Tecomaria capensis(Cape Honeysuckle) Salvia ‘Wendy’s Wish’ Canna indica (Wild Canna) Hamelia patens (Firebush) Erythrina herbacea (Coral Bean) Anisacanthis wrightii (Flame Acanthus)

Feeders

Type: The best feeder is one you are able and

willing to clean. If the feeder ports are above the pool of liquid there is less tendency to drip, a messy problem that attracts ants.

Size: Use a feeder whose size matches your

population. Don’t fi ll it upif all the nectar isn’t being used. Several small feeders are better thanone large feeder and will support more hummers, helping deal with territoriality.

Recipe: Dissolve 1 cup table sugar (cane

preferred, beet is OK) in 4 cups water. Do not use any other sugar— not turbinado, brown sugar, etc.—and never use honey or artifi cial sweeteners. Spring water is best, but most tap water is OK; don’t use distilled water.

Home & Garden

From a master bedroom where both light control and privacy are paramount, to a kitchen in need of a stylish, yet practical window treatment, there is a perfect window covering for every room in your home!

Living and Family Rooms

Kitchen

As your kitchen is the heart of activity in the home, it’s no surprise that choosing window treatments that are both highly functional and stylish can become a challenge. Faux wood blinds and composite shutters offer added durability and are ideal for high-humidity rooms like kitchens. They resist cracking, fading, and warping from stovetops and ovens. Cellular (honeycomb) shades, which let soft, natural light in, are an excellent solution for retaining privacy. To protect your kitchen’s interior from harmful UV rays, try pleated Roman shades, which also add an elegant, sophisticated design accent.

Friends and family gather here daily, so why not make them say “wow” when they see your beautiful window coverings. From artisan-inspired wood shutters to elegant Roman shades, find the perfect finishing that will generate compliments for years to come. From layering versatile shades with drapery panels, to making a design statement with the perfect valance, it’s easy to create the look you’ve always wanted.

cause many inferior types of window coverings to warp or fade. Interior shutters, shades and blinds are right at home in your bathroom environment. Quality blinds are made with highquality components in the headrail to prevent rusting, and moisture-friendly composite shutters are designed to resist fading and warping over time. For an elegant look, consider pairing fabric shades in a distinctive print or pattern with drapery panels. Cellular shades are another popular window treatment for bathrooms since they offer both a view and privacy.

Bedroom

Bathroom

A stylish and well-dressed bathroom is a trend worth joining. Since the bathroom is inherently a highmoisture and humidity area, it may

For restful, tranquil sleep, turn your bedroom into the perfect retreat with an amazing array of choices of window treatments and designer accents. As a room that’s often forgotten because few people see it, we sometimes don’t take the time to update or design our bedroom. From stylish shades and draperies in the latest patterns and fabrics, updated and highly functional designs can

dress your bedroom with window treatments that give you a great night’s sleep. A great recommendation involves pairing bedroom drapes with honeycomb shades for an extra layer of insulation and comfortable temperatures for sleeping. Want to sleep in or just need it extra dark in the baby’s room, consider a room darkened solution to extend the darkness well into the morning hours. You may also consider modern and trendy roller shades.

Still not sure where to start?

You’re not alone. Now that you have some ideas, it is a great time to call in the experts. A reputable custom window provider will help you understand the pros and cons of each treatment choice. Oftentimes, a look can be subtly carried from one room to the next, even if color pallets change and the function is completely different. Of course, there is new technology to consider as well. You could optimize both safety and convenience with a touch of a button from motorized and/or home automation solutions— the sky’s the really limit! Find a reputable vendor like Budget Blinds to walk you through each room. Even if your ideas are not fully thought out, this is what we’re here for. Good luck and enjoy your updated look!

Will Have YOur landScaPe BlOSSOming THiS SPring burlap” and “bare root.” Balled plants can be planted at any time during the year, while bare root plants can only be planted after the leaves drop (that is, in fall or winter). Bare root plants are less expensive than balled ones, so simply by planting in the colder months, one can reduce cost significantly with no difference in results.

By Fred Winward Many homeowners wait until spring to think about their landscape. Inspired by the warmer weather and the blooming flowers, they start imagining what improvements they would like to make to their landscape. Often, they’re disappointed to find that all of the landscape contractors they contact are busy until midsummer or later. This is the “spring rush”. It is important to realize that each season, not just spring, is the right season to work toward a better landscape. The most effective landscaping program includes yearround activities, timed precisely for the maximum effectiveness.

There are diverse landscape maintenance projects to be done in the fall, including cutting back annuals and herbaceous perennials, and raking leaves. Fall is a great time to transplant because the shorter days and lower temperatures place less water on freshly planted perennials. The fall season is generally a much less hectic time than spring in the landscaping professional’s schedule more accommodating this time of year. WINTER Winter is a time for introspection. As the shining days cause us to spend more time indoors, we find ourselves with more time to reflect, to evaluate, and to plan.

Though it’s not commonly thought of as the time to work on one’s landscape, quite the contrary is true. A successful landscape, like any worthwhile project, demands careful planning…and what better time to plan than now. Work with your landscape designer to define your goals for the upcoming year, unhurried by the tight schedules of spring. There are a number of outdoor maintenance projects for which wintertime is a fine time for pruning; removing old, dead, or diseased branches will result in a rejuvenated plant in spring, with improved flowering fruiting and form. Early winter and pre-spring are considered the “off season” in the landscaping profession. As a result you may be able to obtain discounted rates during this time of year.

walls, and fountains. A spring deck or patio project will bring countless hours of enjoyment per the summer months.

June is the month for “architectural pruning”, where the skilled hand guides the growth habit of trees and shrubs for peak aesthetic results. SUMMER Late summer is the time for grass seeding. Cooler weather and a typical increase in rainfall make it a great time to plant for a lush lawn next year. As summer turns to fall, weed germination levels are much lower than in spring or summer, giving your new grass seed the best conditions to thrive. Once you realize that every season is the right season to work on building a successful landscape - a landscape that meets your functional goals and expresses your personal tastes and style-it becomes obvious that the best day of the year to get started is…today.

SPRING While many people plant in the spring, it’s actually a better time to work on the “hardscape” walkways, driveways, retaining

Here’s an overview of each season and what you can do in that season to work toward your ideal landscape. FALL Smart homeowners know that fall, rather than spring, is prime planting time. Many people know that fall is a good time to plant bulbs, such as tulips, crocus and gladiolus for spring color. But few know that it’s an especially effective and economical time to plant trees. Here’s why. Trees and shrubs are available for planting in two forms: balled in
