Health & Wellness Dr. William Pfaff is a board certified orthopaedic spine surgeon. He has been practicing in Delaware since 2009. He is a graduate of the University of Delaware where he studied biochemistry. He then went to medical school at Jefferson Medical College, followed by an orthopaedic residency at Temple University Hospitals. Next, he completed a fellowship in spinal reconstructive surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. His goal is to reduce his patient’s pain and increase their function so they can live a more comfortable and active life. Lewes Spine Center is conveniently located between Lewes and Rehoboth on John J. Williams Highway. Please call 302-231-4333 to schedule an appointment.

Lumbar Disc Herniation By William L. Pfaff, MD Introduction A common cause of low back and leg pain is a ruptured or herniated disc. Symptoms may include dull or sharp pain, muscle spasm or cramping, leg pain and leg weakness or loss of leg function. Sneezing, coughing or bending usually intensifies the pain. Rarely bowel or bladder control is lost, and if this occurs, seek medical attention at once. The disc, which is located between the bones of the spine (vertebrae), splits or ruptures. When this happens, the inner gel-like substance (nucleus pulposus) leaks out. This is called a herniation of the nucleus pulposus or a disc ‘herniation’. Leg pain is a symptom frequently associated with a lumbar herniated disc. Pressure on one or more nerves that causes pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and weakness that extends from the buttock into the leg and sometimes into the foot. Usually one side (left or right) is affected. Anatomy In between each of the five lumbar vertebrae (bones) is a disc, a tough fibrous shock-absorbing pad. Endplates line the ends of each vertebra and help hold the individual discs in place. Each disc contains a tire-like outer band (called the annulus fibrosus) that encases a gel-like substance (called the nucleus pulposus). Nerve roots exit the spinal canal through small passageways between the vertebrae and discs. Pain and other symptoms can develop when the damaged disc pushes into the spinal canal or nerve roots. Disc herniation occurs when the annulus fibrosus breaks open or cracks allowing the nucleus pulposus to escape. This is called a Herniated Nucleus Pulposus or herniated disc. Causes Many factors increase the risk for disc herniation: 1) Lifestyle choices such as

tobacco use, lack of regular exercise, and poor nutrition substantially contribute to poor disc health. 2) As the body ages, natural biochemical changes cause discs to gradually dry out affecting disc strength and resiliency. 3) Poor posture combined with the habitual use of incorrect body mechanics stresses the lumbar spine, affecting its normal ability to carry the bulk of the body’s weight. Combine these factors with the affects from daily wear and tear, injury, incorrect lifting, or twisting and it is easy to understand why a disc may herniate. Lifting something incorrectly can cause disc pressure to rise to several hundred pounds per square inch. A herniation may develop suddenly or gradually over weeks or months. Interestingly, not every herniated disc causes symptoms. Some people discover they have a bulging or herniated disc after an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) for an unrelated reason. Most of the time, the symptoms prompt the patient to seek medical care. The visit with the doctor usually includes a review of medical history, symptom evaluation and the history of treatments and medications the patient has tried and a physical with a neurological examination. An x-ray may be needed to rule out other causes of back pain. An MRI scan verifies the extent and location of the disc herniation.

non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). These work by relieving both the swelling and the pain. Discuss NSAID use with your doctor first. Physical therapy may be recommended and prescribed. Specifically, a special type of physical therapy referred to as ‘McKenzie style’ has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms and help remodel the disc and get the pressure off of the nerves. Ice and heat therapy, gentle massage, stretching and lumbar traction are other helpful modalities. If leg pain is severe, or leg weakness is developing, an epidural steroid injection may be indicated. An epidural steroid injection is an injection of anti-inflammatory medication (steroid) directly to the area of the herniated disc and affected nerves. This can be performed more than once, at least 6 weeks apart and up to three or four times per year. In four to six weeks, the majority of patients find that their symptoms are relieved without surgery. Be optimistic if you find yourself with a disc herniation and remember that only a small percentage of patients go on to require surgery. Surgical Treatment Surgery is considered if non-surgical

treatment fails. Constant pain, leg weakness, or loss of function requires further evaluation. Rarely does a lumbar disc herniation cause bowel/bladder incontinence or groin/genital numbness, which requires immediate medical attention. If surgery is recommended, be involved and ask the purpose of the operation and what results you can expect. Never be afraid to seek a second opinion. To relieve nerve pressure and leg pain, surgery usually involves a partial disc removal called a discectomy. In addition, the surgeon may need to access the herniated disc by removing a portion of the bone covering the nerve. This procedure is called a laminotomy. Fortunately, these procedures can often be done utilizing minimally invasive techniques. Minimally invasive surgery does not require large incisions, but instead uses small cuts and tiny specialized instruments and devices. Prevention Aging is inevitable, but lifestyle changes can help to prevent lumbar disc problems. Risk factors include poor posture and body mechanics, weak abdominal muscles, smoking, and obesity. Start now to adopt habits that will help preserve your spine for the future.

Non-surgical treatment Most patients with a lumbar herniated disc do not need surgery. Initially, the doctor may recommend some physical therapy and medications, and/or an epidural steroid injection. Medications may include an antiinflammatory to reduce swelling , a muscle relaxant to calm spasms, and a pain reliever to alleviate intense but short-lived pain (acute pain). Mild to moderate pain may be treated with

See You at School By: Glenn Courtney, A.B.O.C., Delaware Eye Optical selection process. This will go a long way toward the child wearing and taking care of their new eyewear and overall success of improving the child’s quality of life. With September around the corner and kids preparing to return to school buying clothes, backpacks, paper and pens, parents should consider vision as part of this preparation. Eye exams are routine for many children whose visual problems were caught early and corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses depending on their age. Early in children’s eyecare frames are designed with safety, comfort and durability in mind. Preschool, kindergarten and grade school ages often find frames that are colorful, flexible and in shapes that fit the typically narrow pupillary distances as well having pads for the bridge of noses that are less developed. Today’s children are more aware of style and brands they are exposed to at an early age such as Fisher Price, Adidas, LinDberg Kids, Solo Bambini, Rec Specs, and dilli dalli to name a few. Even though parents are responsible for paying the bill and making sure their children receive proper medical care, in this case eyecare, it is very important for the child to be part of the frame

The prescription is always the main consideration when choosing a child’s eyewear. When selecting frames the optician should be able to read the doctor’s prescription and have suggestions on frame styles that best fit the child but also lenses that provide safe, clear vision. Lenses, depending on the prescription, can be thicker either in the center (plus lenses) or the outer edge (minus lenses). Frame selection can cosmetically help children feel more comfortable in these cases. Frames with wider temples can hide some of the edge thickness on a minus prescription. Those with the plus lenses can benefit from having a frame where the pupil fits as close to the geometric center of the frame as possible. The lens with less decentration (moving optical center) creates less thickness and better peripheral vision. There are many lens materials in the market place and each have different aspects from safety, to cosmetic, weight, clarity or specific applications that can be added. For children polycarbonate has been the standard for many years due to its characteristics of light weight, absorbing

UV, thinness and primarily safety. It is a very durable impact resistant material long prescribed for children which had its origin in industrial eyewear. Trivex or Phoenix (Hoya’s brand) are more recent materials that qualifies for children 18 and under, we feel is better than polycarbonate. The two materials have similar characteristics but Trivex or Phoenix is more scratch resistant and has a higher abbe value so vision is slightly better. Obviously safety is primary for children’s eyewear along with the prescription and fashion. Eyewear today can help them through the early years when development is so critical. Sports eyewear is critical for children involved in almost any sport. Polycarbonate and Trivex can provide impact resistance from balls or flying elbows on a basketball court for example. Liberty Optical

part due to the health implications if directions are not followed. For those who are able to wear them successfully they offer an alternative and can help those whose prescriptions are burdensome due to the lens power.

provides an array of sport frames cushioned at the bridge and temples with wide sweeping lenses for great peripheral vision. This area of eyecare has grown and offers much more variety than in past years. Team colors, different shape designs and various temple concepts allow wearers to customize the sports eyewear depending on what they enjoy from biking, baseball, basketball, motorcycling, shooting, to fishing and many others with eyewear that have both safety and performance in mind. We begin fitting children with contact lenses around the age of 12 or 13 depending on the child’s personal habits and maturity. Parents are usually involved in the decision process for obvious reasons. Contact lenses require more discipline and responsibility on the child’s

We offer many different alternatives from preschool age all the way through college age for children looking for fashion or just function. Over the years we have observed an improvement through technology both in lenses and frames providing children vision on a par with adults and their needs Obviously there are many areas within children’s eyecare I haven’t touched on. We would enjoy speaking with you about your child’s particular vision needs and the many alternatives available.

Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, also known as the “vampire facial,” is a phenomenal medical treatment that has become widely utilized in the medical field, using the patient’s own blood and its powerful healing potential to stimulate the release of stem cells and growth factors, and to stimulate new collagen repair and heal damaged tissues. PRP harvesting and administration is utilized in the dental and orthopaedic fields to heal bones, ligaments, joints, and tendons and now we use PRP to heal damaged, scarred, or aged skin. At Renove Med Spa, Dr. Michelle Parsons utilizes PRP in the form of skin injections and in combination with medical depth microneedling collagen induction therapy to greatly improve the appearance and texture of facial, neck, and chest skin. PRP skin treatments dramatically soften the skin, improve lines and wrinkles, and improve the elasticity or “snap back” of aged, sun-damaged skin. Dr. Parsons also treats the scalp with PRP to stimulate hair regrowth. Any body area can be treated, including the hands, arms, legs, and body. Conditions treated included age- or sun-related loss of elasticity and wrinkles, acne scarring, stretch marks, surgical scars, and thin, crepey skin. The results of just one PRP microneedling treatment are stunning with visible improvement in skin texture apparent within two weeks following the treatment. The improvement continues for months following the treatment and has long-lasting results, resetting the clock, so to speak. Any age can be treated! How Is PRP Performed? Obtaining your PRP and the naturally occurring growth factors in your blood is a relatively simple process, though it is a medical treatment and should only be performed under the direct guidance of a physician. First, your blood will be drawn from your arm, just as if you were getting blood drawn for a blood test, and a topical numbing cream applied to the area to be treated. Your blood will then be processed and prepared in a laboratory centrifuge to separate the red blood cells and the white blood cells from the platelets to isolate the growth factors. Once the growth factors from your own blood have been isolated, Dr.

6 I Fall 2019

Parsons then uses a microneedling device to create multiple micro punctures into your skin, which has been previously numbed by the topically-applied numbing cream. Dr. Parsons applies the growth factors onto the micropunctures created by the microneedling treatment so that the growth factors soak into the tissue for further stimulation of tightening and skin rejuvenation. These growth factors then activate multi-potent stem cells already in the skin. The skin tightens and glows with color, and scarring softens for a beautiful younger and very natural result. The effects of the procedure improve for two to three months and last for years. For best results, the literature recommends annual treatment with PRP microneedling. Do I Need A Night Guard? By Richard J. McCann, D.M.D., P.A. If you frequently wake up with a sore jaw, a dull headache or tooth pain, you may want to ask a qualified dental professional if you are suffering from a condition called bruxism. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, affects about 10 to 15 percent of adults, according to the American Dental Association. There are several ways to alleviate the effects of bruxism. One of the most common, which your dentist may recommend, is a night guard. This is an appliance typically worn while sleeping through the night, which is available without a prescription at most pharmacies. To use the appliance, you simply boil it, let it cool for a few seconds and then gently bite into it to shape it to your own teeth. Night guards are also available through your dentist. Guards of this type tend to be of a higher quality and superior fit, as they are made in a special laboratory from an impression of your mouth carefully taken by a dental professional. This is generally a more expensive device than one purchased over-thecounter, but can be more comfortable to wear. Regardless of where a night guard is purchased, its main function is to prevent the surfaces of your teeth from grinding together, causing you to chip and crack your teeth and strain your jaw muscles. Other Treatments for Teeth Grinding If a night guard is uncomfortable, there are other possible treatments listed below that you can ask your dentist about.

The County Woman’s Journal

Teeth straightening: Teeth that are out of alignment--what dentists call malocclusion-can contribute to teeth grinding. This can be remedied by corrective measures such as braces. Stress prevention: One of the main causes of bruxism is anxiety, so your dentist might advise you to utilize one or more at-home methods of relaxation, like meditation, or in some cases professional counseling, to get you to relax and stop clenching your jaw.

medications, such as antidepressants, might also contribute to the issue, so make sure you tell your dentist about any medications you are taking so he can suggest an alternative if one is warranted.

Change of diet or medication: Your dentist might recommend avoiding stimulants, such as caffeine, to reduce teeth grinding. Certain

The most important thing to know about bruxism is that it can be treated with the help of a dentist.

Is an Aspirin a day still a valuable tool to prevent cardiovascular events? There has been a considerable amount of interest in recent months over the efficacy of using aspirin as a preventive measure in reducing cardiovascular events. In the fall of 2018, the publication of 3 major clinical studies offered strong evidence to the contrary. Here is the issue, however that has led to major confusion in a great segment of the general public: We are talking about “Primary Prevention” that is, avoidance of a first cardiovascular event such as a heart attack, stroke, or sudden cardiac death. For patients that have already survived any of those events, or have had cardiac surgery such as coronary bypass or intervention (angioplasty or stents), vascular surgery or intervention, mini strokes (transient ischemic attacks), or peripheral vascular disease, the use of aspirin remains very important, as “Secondary Prevention”. In other words, to prevent yet another event or need for further surgery or other procedures. The recent studies involved a variety of patients ranging from type 2 diabetics to non-diabetics and ages mid to late 50’s to over 70 years of age. The use of aspirin to prevent cardiovascular events in patients that have

8 I Fall 2019

not yet suffered from such a problem, even by the age of 70 years, showed to reduce the probabilities by 12% (in the best-case scenario) but at a significant cost of a 29 % increase risk of bleeding. Some of the bleedings were serious or even fatal in a small percentage of cases. It is important to note that the dose of aspirin utilized in these trials was 100 mgs against a placebo. So, what have changed over the years to make the use of aspirin seemingly not that helpful or quite frankly, potentially dangerous? Several factors have been found to play a major role in this paradigm shift. First of all, the old primary prevention trials (late 80’s-early 90”) included a significantly higher number of smokers, poorly controlled hypertensive patients and diabetics likewise with less strict control of their blood sugar levels. Second, and perhaps more important, there was a relatively low use of cholesterol lowering drugs, particularly statins. In the recent trials, which were named ASPREE, ARRIVE and ASCEND, the use of statins among participants reached 34 %, 43% and 75 %, respectively. Other influential factors nowadays, are better dietary habits and more regular

physical activity in the general population, as a whole. To summarize the practical implications of the most current medical evidence about the use of aspirin for cardiovascular disease, here are the take home points: 1.-Aspirin remains a very important medication to be used in all cases (unless specific contraindications are present) for patients with a history of heart attack, stroke, or coronary surgery, stents/angioplasty, carotid artery disease/ surgery

or peripheral vascular disease, particularly in diabetics and/ or smokers. This is the Secondary Prevention scenario. 2.- For patients whom have not yet suffered any cardiovascular events, specifically heart attacks, angina, strokes or “ministrokes”, or cardiac surgery or intervention (stents or angioplasty) or peripheral vascular disease, the use of aspirin to prevent a first event (“Primary Prevention”), is still beneficial but it comes at a considerable higher risk for bleeding, some of which could

be serious or even fatal. It is important that, in all cases, before starting or stopping the use of aspirin patients consult with their cardiologists or health care provider responsible for their care. It needs to be done for the right reasons. Aspirin have been around for over 150 years in the medical field and have been a lifesaving drug for millions. Recent evidence brings to light the need for a more careful and thoughtful use of this old and trusted friend. Let’s have that conversation!

Is Your Teen at Risk? BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME CAN TRIGGER MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE Ann Wayne

Chief Executive Officer, SUN Behavioral Health Delaware Ann Wayne has more than 25 years of experience working directly with mental health and substance abuse disorder patients, and maximizing the positive impact of community, caregiver and family collaboration. At SUN, she leads a continuum of care that focuses on meeting patients where they are in their journeys for improved mental health while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and quality of treatment.

“I’ve been to SUN multiple times, and each time I learn something new. I now know this place isn’t going to solve my problems, but they give me the coping skills to help deal with them. From being here, I have opened up more than usual. I hope I don’t have to come back, but if I do, I know I have people who care and will keep me safe.” SUN Behavioral Adolescent Program patient Millions of teenagers across the country struggle with depression, anxiety and other behavioral health issues. In fact, a staggering 20 percent of 13 to 17-yearolds live with a mental health condition, and 50 percent of all lifetime mental illness cases begin by age 14. For parents and guardians, it can be the most heart-wrenching and confusing time they face with their child. Mental illness causes range from bullying to peer pressure, substance abuse, chemical imbalances or family problems. No matter the situation, back-to-school time increases many of these risk factors.

IDENTIFY STRESS AND DEVELOP COPING MECHANISMS Stressors are prevalent throughout teens’ lives. Working to identify, address and manage them early is crucial. Solutions may be as simple as improving time management, creating routines or taking downtime. Depending on the situation, more intensive steps, like seeing a counselor or taking medication, are required.

Helping teenagers find healthy coping mechanisms for managing anxiety and stress empowers them with the lifetime skills that can prevent them from seeking out riskier coping mechanisms — including selfmedicating with alcohol or drugs.

SPOT SUBSTANCE ABUSE RED FLAGS Even in the best of situations, there are teens who turn to drugs and alcohol. Parents and guardians need to be vigilant and aware of possible indicators, which can include some of the following and more:

HOW TO GET HELP At SUN Behavioral, we’re able to help with mental illness and substance abuse disorders through our Adolescent Program, which has two path options: • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): for adolescent patients transitioning from inpatient care or who need urgent treatment in a time of crisis to prevent a hospital visit

• Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): designed for teens who may be transitioning from inpatient care or need more intensive treatment than traditional outpatient programs can offer Our program is designed for young people who need treatment for mental, emotional or addiction problems. It’s led by SUN’s team of experts who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Together, we partner with teens and their families to help them map a journey to improved health and happiness.

• Changes in friend/family relationships • Extreme mood shifts • Increased usage of over-the-counter eye or nasal drops • Secretive or erratic behavior • Track marks on arms and legs • Burns or soot on fingers and lips • Runny nose or frequent nosebleeds • Mouth or cold sores • Dramatic weight loss or gain • Loss of interest in activities and/or school Whether addiction is involved or a teen is “just experimenting,” the conversations and action steps following parent and guardians’ initial suspicions are crucial. First, have a conversation with each other and then with the teenager. When the latter happens, go in with a clear plan. Always be honest, have evidence, expect anger, provide clear rules and consequences, and follow through with them. Addiction will require more extreme action. Involve a specialist and get adolescents in crisis the treatment they need for their best chance at recovery.

Do you try to hide your legs in the warmer months because of bulging or unsightly veins?

Often, it is too late to try to prevent bulging veins, however, walking regularly, drinking plenty of water, and not crossing your legs can help improve the health of your veins.

Varicose veins bulge in some areas or can be red and spidery in other areas. This condition is very common; it can be painful or hard to deal with, and in some cases, it may indicate a larger health issue. Spider veins and varicose veins often start when we are younger. They frequently appear at the time of pregnancy, but may appear spontaneously at any time throughout our lives. Varicose veins may occur in many parts of the body, however, the leg veins are most often affected because these veins must work against gravity. The valves within your veins may weaken or break over time, causing some of the blood to pool in the legs instead of going to the heart. This back-up of blood results in bulging veins. Chances are if you have varicose veins, then your mother or grandmother did as well. Women are at an increased risk for varicose veins compared to men. Other risk factors include being overweight, advanced age, and occupations that

When is it time to talk to your doctor or care provider about your veins? • If the vein is swollen, red, tender to the touch, or warm, it can be a sign of a blood clot • If you have sores or a rash on your leg near your ankle • If the skin on your ankle or calf changes color • If one of your varicose veins begins to bleed • If your pain or symptoms keep you from doing daily activities.

Beebe Vascular and Beebe Vein Center have a team of medical professionals who perform many vascular and vein procedures, including: • Carotid endarterectomy surgery: This is a common surgery performed at the Margaret H. Rollins Lewes Campus and an extremely important one for the health and wellbeing of patients. It is performed when the patient has received a diagnosis of a blockage in one or both of the

carotid arteries, which are the main vessels carrying blood to the brain. Without correction a blockage may lead to a life-threatening stroke. • Abdominal aortic aneurysm endovascular repair: This procedure repairs an abdominal aortic artery that has an aneurysm, which is a bulge in the side of the artery wall. This artery is large and carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. An aneurysm has the

potential to rupture, thus becoming life-threatening. This repair is performed through the arteries, thus avoiding major surgery, in most cases. • Lower extremity bypass: This surgical procedure improves circulation in the legs through the creation of a new path for blood to flow around a blockage. Schedule a free vein screening to learn more about your vein health by calling (302) 644-4954.

Varicose veins can be more than just a cosmetic issue. Ongoing vein issues can lead to non-healing ulcers or wounds and even blood clots. Beebe Vein Center is the only nationally accredited vein center in Delaware. The team offers free monthly vein screenings with physicians and care providers. The sessions provide information on vein health and can help you understand available treatments.

Health & Wellness Dr. Mary Ann Connolly Gaskin Dr. Mary Ann Connolly Gaskin is a licensed audiologist and owner of Bayside Audiology & Hearing Aids. The locally-owned private practice was established in 2008, and Dr. Gaskin has been helping the people of Sussex County achieve healthy hearing for over 30 years. She earned her Doctorate in Audiology from Salus University, her Master’s degree from Temple University, and a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Gaskin holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech-Hearing Association and is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology. Dr. Gaskin expanded the practice in 2018 to include a second audiologist, Dr. Sara Conrad, and relocated to the Nassau Commons office park off of Route 9 in Lewes.

Best Practices in Hearing Enhancement The audiologists at Bayside Audiology & Hearing Aids are dedicated to helping their patients hear better and succeed with their hearing aids by customizing treatment plans that address patients’ unique needs. This may include hearing devices from any of the major hearing aid manufacturers, accessories to improve communication in a wide variety of listening situations, cochlear implants for those who no longer receive adequate benefit from hearing aids, and auditory training. Shop for an Audiologist Not a Hearing Aid Brand Many people shop for a brand of hearing aid, thinking one must be significantly better than the other. You might be surprised to know that, when programmed in an identical manner, major brands will perform very similarly. However, when programmed poorly, the best brand will sound terrible and you will wonder why you even bothered. What you should shop for is an audiologist. Look for someone who can function as a hearing enhancement coach and problem-solver. An audiologist will test your hearing thoroughly to determine its nature and to ensure that there are no medical issues that need to be addressed.

Speech recognition testing will also be performed to determine how well you understand speech, not only in quiet but also in noisy situations. The audiologist should also ask you about your listening and lifestyle needs since formal tests do not always reveal each person’s particular hearing challenges. Steps to Better Hearing After your audiologist has determined your residual hearing aid listening needs, then the process of selecting your individualized hearing enhancement solution begins. It might be as intricate as hearing aids, cochlear implants, telecoils, and assistive listening devices, as well as training in more communication strategies. How simple or involved depends upon the patient’s particular needs.

performance with new hearing aids will be realized after a few weeks of use and further adjustments.

aid while it is in your ear. Through additional computer programming, the hearing aids are then adjusted at each level to optimize speech understanding and listening comfort and verify that the hearing aids are meeting targets as closely as possible. Everyone Has Unique Needs Once you walk out the door with your new hearing aids, you are not done. The next few weeks involve a validation process. Are the hearing aids helping, or do you need more adjustments, or a different solution altogether? It will also take a few weeks for the brain to acclimate to all of the new sounds being heard and processed, and because of this acclimatization period, best

If best practices are followed - for example, your audiologist takes the time to listen to your concerns, verifies, and validates, then most likely you will keep the technology recommended because it is helping you to meet your receptive communication needs. Research has shown that the use of hearing aids improves quality of life in many areas including relationships at home, selfconfidence, mental health, safety, and social life. Achieving your best possible hearing takes time, but it is absolutely worth the investment, and your audiologist will be with you every step of the way.

The next step is the programming and verification of the hearing aids. Each hearing aid is programmed using software provided by the manufacturer. Adjustments are made to meet certain fitting targets established by a large body of research. The purpose of fitting targets is to provide you with the audibility and listening comfort that you need. “Best practice” documents recommend that a small flexible microphone be placed in your ear to determine the output of the hearing

“Dr. Gaskin is wonderful! I feel very confident in her expertise. When I first knew I had to do something about my hearing loss, I went to a different audiologist who seemed to want to sell one brand of aids and wasn’t too concerned with my individual needs. Dr. Gaskin takes her time to make sure that she recommends aids that are matched to the person. Her follow-up service is great! She is available to adjust the aids when needed and is an expert in fine-tuning. In addition, she is very understanding and friendly. I have recommended her to a number of people who thank me for sending them to Bayside Audiology!” - Lynne J.

Bellafill Restore Youthful Facial Volume Michelle Parsons, MD

is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and received her residency training from the State University of New York in General Surgery, and Christiana Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. She also served as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force. Dr. Parsons specializes in BioIdentical Hormone Therapy and treatment of Thyroid disorders as well as Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Medicine.

With time, age, and gravity, our facial structures tend to lose some of the youthful volume it once had. The cherubic apples in our cheeks fall, leaving us with a drooping jaw line that becomes jowls, and deep lines form around the nose and mouth areas, known as the nasolabial folds. Fortunately there is a solution for these pesky issues of aging. Physicians can now treat their patients with an in-office procedure known as dermal filler injections. What are Dermal Fillers? Dermal fillers are medical products that are injected by a trained physician to fill in facial areas where volume has been lost. It is possible to lift those cheeks back up and fill in the deep lines around the nose or nasolabial folds, and the depressions around the lower mouth and chin areas known as the marionette lines. Treatments with dermal fillers are a wonderful way to restore a more youthful appearance. However, what has not been so wonderful is how long they lasted, which has been temporary, on average from 6 to 18 months, as the products are slowly reabsorbed and eliminated by the body. This has been a disappointing aspect of dermal fillers. But this is

where the story in non-surgical facial rejuvenation takes an upswing. Now there is a dermal filler that can fill in lines and sagging with much longer lasting results that can last five to ten years, if not longer. This product is Bellafill. What is Bellafill? Bellafill® is a smooth, collagen-based dermal filler with polymethyl methacrylate microspheres, or PMMA. It is injected by a physician to stimulate your own natural collagen to fill in areas in the face that have lost volume over time, due to aging and gravity. The collagen gel in Bellafill® provides immediate volume and lift so that results are seen right away. Once injected, the PMMA microspheres stay in place and create a base that provides structural support and stimulate formation of your own naturally produced collagen for long lasting results. PMMA is a biocompatible material that has been safely used in medical implants, such as lens implants after cataract surgery, and other devices for more than 65 years. How long does Bellafill Last? Since Bellafill stimulates the body to produce it’s own

The County Woman’s Journal

collagen, the results of Bellafill can by quite long lasting. When the skin creates new collagen for structural support, this natural collagen in our skin lasts anywhere from 5 to 10 years. The effectiveness and patient satisfaction rates of Bellafill® have been studied and established through 5 years when used to correct nasolabial folds, and 12 months when used to correct acne scars. Since Bellafill stimulates your skin to make more of it’s own collagen, the look and feel of Bellafill is very natural.

among the top one percent of Bellafill injectors in the United States. BellaDiamond physicians perform the highest volume of Bellafill treatments in the country so they have the most experience with Bellafill.

Implant dentistry has become the new standard of care for replacing missing teeth they come the closest to looking and feeling like your natural teeth. Many people do not know the importance of replacing missing teeth immediately. As soon as you lose a tooth, the adjacent teeth start shifting towards the missing tooth space. That leads to gum problems and retaining food surrounding the adjacent teeth. Also, other teeth need to bear more load to compensate for the missing teeth. So the chances of fracturing adjacent teeth are higher. Replacing a missing tooth now will save you money, frustration, and discomfort in the future. The doctors at Fenwick Dental have had extensive training allowing them to place dental implants safely and effectively. The dental Implants are a medically grade titanium and are considered one of the highest grade implants on the market. Trust & Excellence Here’s what our customers have to say: “I was very self-conscious about the problems I was having with my teeth. I always had really nice teeth, some orthodontic work as a boy and no cavities until one at age 34. My teeth had become a real problem due to my neglect of dental care for 3+ years. No one there made me feel bad, everything was very professional and high tech. Their pricing was competitive and they took my fly-by-night insurance to help. My smile is back thanks to Dr. Ken and all of his wonderful staff! - One Smiley Client PS- No one bribed or coerced me into this, I really want to let others know!” - Jay Futrell “I received the usual service and professional dental work today. TERRIFIC AS ALWAYS! They treat me as if I was one of the family. From top to bottom I and my wife are treated like Kings and Queens. I say this without exaggeration. Their front office staff and I would say all of their dental technicians, are pretty much topnotch. I have been seen by most of them, I believe. Never dissatisfied. A terrific dental team. I doubt you could find a better dental team than Fenwick Dental.” - Adolph Perticari “Colleen got me in for an emergency extraction in 20 minutes, when all the other businesses were booked out a week or more! Dr. Ken was so gentle, even though my molar came out in pieces. He and Heather were professional, fast, and kind. I’m so happy that I went there.” - Barbara Sellman “I have had extensive dental work done, when I came to Dr. Ashwin I had several broken teeth which had root canals and crowns which just made me very conscious to smile in public, I am very fortunate to have ended up in the right place. I was very nervous about getting implants and was very concerned about pain and the outcome, I was surprised that it hurt way less than the other procedures I have had done on my teeth. I love the fact that I can eat normally again and I love my smile now”. - Melissa Duvall “I work in health care and value great doctors. When deciding to have my teeth removed and dental Implants placed I was fearful and wanted to find the right place. I am thrilled with the results of my Dental Implants. My mouth feels better than it has in years and I am able to eat foods I previously had to avoid. Thank you, Dr. Ken and staff, for making this difficult transition so easy for me.” - Heather H.

“Having gone to Fenwick Dental throughout the year I couldn’t be more pleased with my results. All of the staff, from the front desk ladies to all of the dental assistances, were so nice and professional. Dr. Ashwin is the best! He always made me feel comfortable and took the time to make sure every procedure was painless and professionally done. His assistant, Summer, was always so professional and caring. I would highly recommend Fenwick Dental to anyone. “ - Robin Rashford “I have need some rather extensive dental work over the last several months. Dr. Ken and the staff are excellent. They are professional, thorough and have pleasant, positive interaction with their patients. I am pleased to recommend Fenwick Dental.” - Cyndy Spicknall “I was searching Google for local dentists, and Fenwick Dental had great reviews. Now I see why. The staff is fantastic! From the girls at the front counter to the hygienists, to the doctors. Everyone at Fenwick Dental is friendly and kind. I have had nothing but good experiences. I don’t know that going to the dentist is ever a “grand” experience, but these folks definitely make it a pleasant one. Highly recommended.” - Robert Haig “I had a great experience at Fenwick Dental. I am the biggest baby when it comes to seeing the dentist. But the staff here made me very comfortable and made my procedure as painless as possible. Big thumbs up !! Highly recommended!!” - Michelle Kemper “Dr. Ashwin was fabulous for my first time at Fenwick Dental. I called Monday morning to try and come in for a front tooth binding break. The dental assistants fit me in right away when I described my front tooth issue. The dental assistants were also excellent, they were kind, patient and explained alternatives for my dental needs. They make sure to explain the procedure to you and made sure I was comfortable with the outcome! They also have payment options and plans so that you can work towards the right care! My front teeth look better than they ever have! I love the work Dr. Ashwin did on my teeth! I will be making them our primary dentist! That’s how good my teeth came out. Thank you Fenwick Dental!” - Carol Whitehead

I have smoker’s lines but I don’t smoke! Are you frustrated about having “smoker’s” lines around your lips and you’ve never smoked? You are not alone! This is a common complaint of a lot of people, having those pesky vertical creases around your lips that appear when we pucker, use a straw or just speak! And with time and continued motion of our mouths, these creases can become permanently etched in our skin. You don’t have to smoke to have smokers lip lines Of course smoking makes these creases worse, but it is not the only cause of “smoker’s” lip lines. The cause of these lip lines is due to thinning of the skin around our mouths and losing the strength of the natural white roll of the lip border, where the lip transitions from the pink color of the lip to the normal facial skin. It is this natural white roll that forms the transition or border between the actual lip and the skin surrounding the lip, where lip liner would be drawn. This white roll border is what usually prevents applied lipstick from bleeding or smudging away from the lip itself onto the surround skin. If you were to observe a child’s lip, this natural white roll of the lip border is typically present and can be felt as a soft firmness that defines the border of the lip. Lip lines and creases are also caused by the daily use of the mouth in everyday speaking. The facial expressions with using everyday speech causes the mouth to crease in the same areas repeatedly and over time, the creases become permanent. So what can we do to address this pesky concern of lip lines? Thankfully, we have several options! The first problem issue I like to address when treating these lines, is to restore the strength of the natural white roll that has been lost. This is done by adding a hyaluronic acid filler directly into the white roll. By rebuilding and strengthening this natural border between the lip and the surrounding facial skin, the lips cannot collapse as easily like an accordion and form lip lines and creases, when we are speaking, eating or making other mouth motions. Hyaluronic acids that are typically used in this area of the lip include brand name fillers like Restylane and Juvederm. https://www.renovemedspa.org/lipfillers Lip fillers can strengthen lip borders These fillers are specifically designed to match natural lip softness and flexibility while providing moisture and strength. On average and for most people, hyaluronic acids injected into the lips last from 6 to 9 months. It is also possible extend the length of time hyaluronic acid lip fillers last by adding a topical product that prevents the normal breakdown and reuptake of the filler over time by the body. Natural hyaluronidase found in our skin normally, breaks down the hyaluronic acid found in lip fillers as well as the natural hyaluronic acid normally found in our skin. Hyaluronic acid in our skin binds water in the skin. With more hyaluronidase, that break down hyaluronic acid, we lose moisture in our skin and lips with age. The product HA5 blocks the formation of hyaluronidase, so it increases the natural hyaluronic acid in our skin, thereby allowing more natural moisture in our skin and lips and extending the duration of injected hyaluronic acid lips filler! https://renovemedspa.brilliantconnections.com/ Using Botox can soften lip lines Another, easy fix, to address lip lines is to add Botox. Botox relaxes muscles. By relaxing the muscles around the mouth, it is possible to diminish the appearance of lip lines, expecially when speaking or puckering, such as when blowing a kiss. When you have botox injected around the mouth, of course maintaining function of the mouth is important. Such a small amount is injected so that you will still be able to speak, eat, smile normally! You will still be able to use a straw, whistle and kiss. You will likely not be able to more forcefully pucker, so that you will not be able to eat peanut butter off a spoon for example, or spit very well! But overall, even with these limitation, the results that we can get by using about 5 units of Botox, is well worth it to diminish lip lines. https://www.renovemedspa.org/botox .

18 I Fall 2019

Repair collagen damage with Bellafill Another way to more permanently improve lips creases is to injected a collagen stimulator, such as Bellafill, to the skin around the lips, exactly where the lip creases are. With injection of Bellafill, you will see a smoothing of the lip lines right away, but also continued improvement over the next 8 weeks as new collagen is laid down and damaged collagen around the lips is remodeled, softening lips creases, for years to come afterwards. We can also stimulate collagen repair and remodeling of the skin around the lips with a platelet rich plasma (PRP) application by microneedling. PRP utilizes the powerful healing properties of the natural growth factors already in our blood and applying these healing growth factors directly into damaged skin to promote rapid healing and smoothing of the skin. https://www.renovemedspa.org/bellafill . Laser treatments for lip lines Finally, another modality to permanently smooth the wrinkles found around the top lip in particular, is a laser resurfacing treatment. Laser resurfacing is a deep ablative treatments where the skin is ablated, or heated up in a controlled manner, and planed down to a depth where there are no wrinkles. The downtime for these treatment is fairly long, needing to apply Vaseline to the treated skin for at least 7 days, with another 4 weeks of noticeable redness, which can be covered up with makeup. Though the recovery is longer that all other skin treatments, the results are also the most dramatic and are the longest lasting and are considered permanent. https://www.renovemedspa.org/microlaser-peel . Call to make a free consultation with Dr. Parsons These are the current best options for improving stubborn and annoying lip lines that cause our appearance to look older than we would like. I hope some of these options appeal to you and that you are able to take advantage of these effective treatments. To see if you are a candidate and would benefit from any of these treatments, please give us a call to make an appointment with Dr. Parsons for a free consultation. Healing Your Inner Child Oprah Winfrey on a recent Super Soul Conversations OWN podcast titled “When You Know Better, You Do Better,” shared her testimony. Oprah said when she was 14 years old, she became pregnant and hid the pregnancy for seven months until the baby was born. She shared how she was raped at age 9 and abused at age 10, and as a result of years of abuse, at 14 years old, she found herself pregnant. After she gave birth at age 14 and the baby died, her father said to her, “This is your second chance. This is your opportunity to seize this moment and make something of your life,” and Oprah did just that. Like many of us, Oprah has struggled publicly with her weight for years, trying diet after diet to lose weight with yo-yo results. But what you may not know, Oprah admits that she never sought professional therapy to heal from her childhood traumas. But why not? Girl victims of childhood sexual abuse and trauma are far more likely to become morbidly obese adults. Food becomes their comfort, and weight becomes their protective armor and shield that protects them from unwanted advances. Research shows that childhood trauma, no matter how great or small, is so harmful that it can disrupt a person’s entire psychology and metabolism.

Everyone has some brokenness from childhood and healing your inner child is the first step towards wholeness. Seeking out a trained therapist who understands how to help you heal your inner child is akin to seeking a doctor to heal a broken bone or an illness. In the words of Oprah’s father, this is your second chance. It’s no accident you’re reading this right now. You deserve to be happy, to drop those extra pounds, and to become the best version of yourself. Seize this moment today by scheduling your appointment at renewyourheartandmind.net.

Your inner child represents the subconscious part of you that records, recalls, remembers, repeats, and stores in your body almost every emotional reaction you have ever had without you even realizing it. An unhealthy inner child negatively impacts relationships, is linked to obesity and other health problems and often leads to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mental illnesses.

ITN Southern Delaware –

Success Hinges on Dedicated Volunteers Janis Hanwell, ITN Executive Director

Non-driving seniors need reliable transportation With the last of the baby boomers reaching their senior years, more than one-third of individuals age 70 and over no longer drive. One of the biggest challenges non-driving seniors encounter, especially in Sussex County, is finding safe, reliable transportation that can accommodate their unique needs. While public transit providers work to expand options in lower Delaware, many older adults either have limited or no access to these services or cannot find a local service to meet their special transportation needs. It is these and various other circumstances that keep some older adults driving much longer than they might if they had convenient access to other more personalized transportation alternatives.

ITN Volunteer drivers and dispatchers train new volunteers and share their own experiences.

Serving 55+ and adults with visual impairments ITN Southern Delaware is a nonprofit, communitysupported, membershipbased transportation cooperative that is addressing this issue “full speed” by providing arm-through-arm, door-

through-door ride services within the membership area with no limitations to ride purpose. As an all-volunteer community-based network, ITN provides reliable transportation for seniors 55+ and adults with visual impairments throughout Sussex and Lower Kent Counties. By providing rides any day, any time to doctor appointments, worship services, consumer and business related locations, to social and recreational events and activities, and much more, the nonprofit is supporting lifelong safety, increasing older nondriving adults’ mobility and independence, and enhancing their ability to age-in-place and take pleasure in an improved Quality of Life. ITN volunteers make riders feel safe The increasing success of ITN Southern Delaware hinges on the support of volunteers. ITN drivers, dispatchers, and support staff are all dedicated, caring volunteers who make riders feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. They are committed to helping others and giving back to the community. All receive a free ITN membership, and immediately begin banking credits for their own future transportation needs. Volunteers can select their own hours and drivers drive their own cars around their own neighborhoods, pick up their own neighbors, and give them rides to places in and around their own communities. ITN is neighbor helping neighbor; the very core idea of “community”.

Volunteerism benefits self and others There is no prerequisite skill or special license necessary to volunteer with ITN. It only requires time around your own schedule and a desire to do something meaningful in your community. More than twothirds of ITN volunteers are women, many of whom define success in later life in terms of helping others rather than accumulating wealth. Over 85% of all ITN volunteers say they have developed new friendships through their volunteer activities. They say that it is a great way to make new social connections in Southern Delaware, and that donating their time rewards them with a greater purpose in life. They feel that giving back to society means they make a difference in the lives of others. Not only is it a fulfilling way to keep active and maintain physical health,

volunteers say being generous provides a significant source of happiness by giving them a sense of belonging and higher self-esteem. Furthermore, research supports the notion that volunteering improves an individual’s longevity and quality of life.

Volunteers Come in All Shapes and Sizes During our almost 36 years of service to the community, Delaware Hospice has been touched by the tremendous support of thousands of volunteers. These fun-loving, individuals have donated their time and talents throughout the years in a variety of ways. Within the past year alone, 407 volunteers have donated over 24,995 hours! The quality of life for patients and their families improve dramatically through the healthcare services provided and the 1,109 patient visits our volunteers fulfilled. Many of our volunteers come to us and offer up their skills for very unusual projects. While others are able to meet, our daily needs. “I have been very blessed and love to give back in some small way,” commented Coles Marsh of Milton when asked why he volunteers. Cole supports Delaware Hospice by visiting with patients specifically Veterans and volunteers at the reception desk at the Delaware Hospice Center. Based on skill sets and wishes, volunteers help in a variety of areas throughout Delaware Hospice. Running errands with or for patients is always a needed service and is a wonderful experience for the volunteer and patient. Visiting with patients in one of our other eight programs such as Delaware Transitions, Delaware Palliative, or New Hope are other rewarding volunteer opportunities. Many volunteers choose to talk, read, and play cards with a patient and their family. Other volunteers enjoy helping in the Delaware Hospice offices and contribute administratively by updating databases, completing informational packets, or even taking pictures at our fundraising events. Volunteers are always able to see how their dedication positively affects our patients’ lives. • Sharon Spence of Bear assembles educational packets for staff members to utilize on medical visits or at health fairs. • Bridgeville resident, Ron Friedl makes phone calls to current patients to ensure they are doing well or learn if they need any additional support. • Cindy Wright of Kennett Square provides database and clerical support and visits with patients. • Volunteer artisans and designers help decorate the Delaware Hospice Center during the holiday season. • Millsboro resident, Rich Stout loves volunteering his time with Camp New Hope. • Jason Tucker of Milford plays his African drum for patients. • West Grove resident, Linda McRae provides pet therapy to patients. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Delaware Hospice volunteer, please email volunteer@delawarehospice.org or visit www.delawarehospice.org. There are no time commitments; however, any amount of time you are able to give is greatly appreciated.

“After every visit with Mom, a volunteer calls me with updates regarding her emotional, mental, as well as physical state. I can feel their love and care for my mother through the phone.” A family member who lives in San Francisco, CA and benefits from the generosity of volunteers who donate their time to visit with his mom and provide him updates.”

He completed his internship and residency at the Yale University Primary Care Program, fellowships at Georgetown and NIH. Most recently, he completed an integrative medicine fellowship with Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona. He is the founder of Delaware Arthritis and is the medical director of the Lewes Wellness Center.

Let’s talk about Back pain

What is new at Delaware Arthritis Most of us have experienced back pain at one time or another. It is one of the most frequent causes for doctor office appointments as well as Emergency Department visits. The approximate annual cost most recently published is estimated at 100 billion dollars ( 75% of the number is due to lost wages and productivity). Among the most common causes of back pain can be due to injury, muscle or ligament strains, bulging or ruptured discs, Arthritis as in Osteoarthritis or inflammation (Ankylosing Spondylitis or Psoriasis), Scoliosis or Osteoporosis (when you experience a compression fracture). Should I be concerned if I have Back pain? In some cases, back pain may be indicative of other medical problems and you should call your doctor if your back pain is accompanied with a fever, unexplained weight loss, shortness of breath. You should also seek medical attention when pain is severe and does not improve with rest. If the pain radiates to the legs or you have weakness or numbness of the legs also may be symptoms that require evaluation.

includes medications, exercises and conditioning. How do you manage Back pain? Most patients that experience acute back pain recover completely in a few weeks. In some cases, the pain persists for months and becomes chronic. To keep your back healthy, it is important to develop a program that focuses on strengthening and flexibility. Medications can be used to decrease muscle spasms and decrease pain. We use muscle relaxants and nonsteroidal medications as first line medical treatment. At Delaware Arthritis, we DO NOT usually use narcotics with the management of back pain. We prefer the use of CBD oil or integrative modalities such as like Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, massage therapy and energy work (Healing Touch). We believe that a healthy back program starts with stretching exercises and activities that will increase the strength of your core muscles (muscles in the abdomen and low back).

How do your diagnosis Following the examination, a series of X rays are the first step. In cases of severe pain in which you need a deeper view of the spine a CT Scan or an MRI may be requested.

When the pain is more debilitating and causes functional limitations, we suggest physical therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic care can be valuable in decreasing the intensity of pain.

After the diagnosis is made you can develop a plan of treatment that

Are Injections helpful? Injections are performed to decrease

guidance. We have had success with this technique. It has provided relief to a number of patients.

the pain experienced. Usually a combination of cortisone and lidocaine (an anesthetic) are used in muscles (Trigger point injections), joints in the low back (sacroiliac joints) or the spine (epidural injections).

The EMG guided injections, help us identify deep structures like the piriformis muscle (a large muscle in the middle of the buttock that is a common cause of back and leg pain and Pseudo-sciatica can be treated this way.

In most cases, they provide relief of symptoms and increase the patients function. At Delaware Arthritis, we are now using the CMECD method to perform guided injections of muscles in the spine. With this method, we administer a combination of lidocaine- steroids and Phenoxybenzamine to the specific area of spasm directed by EMG

Our goal at Delaware Arthritis is to provide care with conservative modalities/medical management of back pain. In cases in which the patient is not able to return to their optimal level of function, a surgical referral is recommended.

What is a Skilled Nursing Community? A skilled nursing community—or “nursing home,” as they are more commonly called—is a community created for those who need regular medical attention as well as assistance completing many of the tasks found in their daily lives. While some other long-term care options offer similar services, what truly sets skilled nursing homes apart is the presence of licensed medical professionals on premises. As the name suggests, a 24/7 staff of skilled nurses and caregivers, as well as physicians are always available. Because of this, skilled nursing communities are an ideal option for older adults requiring round-the-clock care as well as those recovering from a life-changing accident, injury or illness. In most cases, the individualized care and attention make skilled nursing communities a perfect fit for those suffering or recovering from traumatic illnesses. Doctors working at these communities develop specific care programs to fit each individuals’ needs, while other medical professionals on staff—for instance, physical and occupational therapists—are available to help residents in need of rehabilitation. Because of this, most skilled nursing homes can integrate the residents’ medical needs seamlessly into their lifestyle. Is Skilled Nursing the Same as Long-Term Care? One of the biggest misconceptions about skilled nursing communities is that, once a resident checks in they will likely never leave. While skilled nursing could be considered a longterm care solution, it’s not always the case. In many cases, skilled nursing homes are the best fit for an adult who was recently released from the hospital

but still needs some assistance and additional medical care. It’s not uncommon for stroke victims or those who recently suffered great physical trauma to be briefly admitted into a skilled nursing community while they recover. With a 24/7 staff of caregivers as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy options all under one roof, skilled nursing communities make an ideal recovery option, even for those planning on going home independently. Not Just for the Elderly Skilled nursing homes have long been assumed as an option for just the elderly. In reality, skilled nursing home residents cover a much wider scope. Because of the level of attention and assistance these communities provide, they work as a fantastic option for almost any adult who is recovering from a debilitating illness or injury. The Difference Between Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living Many people often consider skilled nursing and assisted living as one in the same, however, there are a number of differences that distinguish the two options. The major difference that separates skilled nursing communities from assisted living communities (or any other senior care community, for that matter) is the full-time presence of a physician and other medical professionals. While Assisted Living communities offer services to ease the burden of day-to-day life for their residents, skilled nursing communities are designed to help those who need help with most, if not all, of their daily tasks as well as specific medical attention. In many cases, skilled nursing homes are an ideal destination for residents who find it difficult to eat, bathe, walk, or perform similarly important tasks without the help of a caregiver.

Children and Chiropractic Care Dr. Tracy Hudson Dr. Hudson is a ’95 Cape Henlopen High School graduate and continued her educational career at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. While attending UNCW, Dr. Hudson suffered an injury playing softball and she sought treatment with a local chiropractor. After a few adjustments, Dr. Hudson was back on the field. Now being a true believer, she decided to further her education in the natural healing art. She attended Life University in Atlanta, Ga. for 3 years, and then transferred to Texas Chiropractic College in Houston. After graduating in 2004, she moved to Clearwater, Fla., where she was in private practice for 8 years. During that time, she also became a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She has now moved back to her home town to share her love of chiropractic with our community.

A child’s health is undoubtedly of the utmost importance to any parent. With a growing number of parents connecting their children and chiropractic care, it is no wonder that the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports chiropractic therapy as the most common complementary and integrative medicine practice used by children in the United States. The science of this care is based on the relationship between correct spinal alignment and the corresponding health of nerves, muscles, and organs. Therefore, we suggest that by keeping the spine in alignment as a child grows, a high level of wellness can be achieved.

Children and Chiropractic Care: Success Stories There are been significant studies that show health improvements for children using chiropractic treatments. For example, in 2008 the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association published a case study showing the successful chiropractic care of pediatric patients with chronic constipation. Likewise, the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association published an article in 2009 indicating the effective treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease of a 3-month old baby girl. Similar achievements have been made for children with colic, asthma, and chronic ear infections. Why Should My Child See a Pediatric Chiropractor? Little ones are constantly enduring “micro-traumas”. The word “microtraumas” may sound scary, but we’re talking about natural incidents like going through the birth canal, falling while learning to walk, bumping heads, being thrown in the air by crazy Uncle Mike, etc. These adventures enhance our children’s understanding of the world, and yet can be the source of subluxations that may adversely affect their little bodies. Pairing children and chiropractic care can not only help alleviate some chronic conditions as reference above, it has also shown to be an extremely effective preventative healthcare therapy.

Dr. Sheila Burek Dr. Sheila Burek is a Buffalo, N.Y. native, who received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology at D’youville College. She then worked as a medical research assistant in Cardiology at the University Of Buffalo School Of Medicine. It was at that time that Dr. Burek suffered an injury at the gym, for which she sought chiropractic care. It was through this experience that Dr. Burek became interested in furthering her healthcare career in alternative medicine. She attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1995. After 18 years of private practice in Pennsylvania, working in a multi-disciplinary setting, including orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists, she relocated to our beautiful beach town.

Chiropractic care may help children with things like: • inability to sleep • recurring ear infections • frequent sickness • crying all day and night • bouts of constipation and diarrhea • breastfeeding issues • colic • asthma • digestive issues • reflux • bedwetting • allergies • as well as encourage a child’s optimal brain and nerve development.

Things to Know About Children and Chiropractic Care Chiropractic care is safe for the majority of people. The key is to find a provider that is knowledgeable about your situation. Find a chiropractor that is skilled in their technique, proficient in their training, and cares about the long term health of your children. In our office, pediatric patients are not adjusted in the same manner as adults. Nothing is “cracked”! The adjustment consists of a sustained pressure, about the weight of a nickel, in a specific direction or utilizing low-force instruments that are gentle and effective.

Testimonial “Our family of 6, ages 3 to 43, have been getting regular chiropractic adjustments for the past 6 years. We have less illnesses and are overall healthier than any other family I know. There is no doubt that our care keeps us going!” - Kate K.

Seven ways to prevent osteoporosis When it comes to osteoporosis, Bayhealth OB-GYN Melisa Edler, MD, says it’s important to recognize prevention starts at any age. “Even young girls and their parents need to be aware,” she said. With that in mind, here are seven ways Dr. Edler says you can prevent osteoporosis. Eat a balanced diet to make sure you’re getting enough calcium and vitamin D. “Milk is a good source of both, since it’s often fortified with vitamin D,” said Dr. Edler. “You can also get calcium from any dairy product, and green, leafy vegetables, orange juice, and some cereals also contain calcium. Check food labels to find the ones that do have calcium.” Spend time in the sun. “For vitamin D, you should also spend 10 to 15 minutes out in the sun each day. Sun exposure is how your body produces vitamin D,” explained Dr. Edler. For those who can’t get outside or have trouble with the foods that contain calcium and vitamin D, supplements are an option. “While it’s best to get your calcium and vitamin D from diet and lifestyle, taking them in supplement form is better than nothing,” said Dr. Edler. “But it’s very important you stick to the recommended doses because you can overdo it with vitamin D and calcium.” The dosage recommendations for calcium are 1,300 mg per day for those ages 9–18 years old; 1,000 mg per day for those ages 19–50 years old; and 1,200 mg per day for those age 51 years old or older. For vitamin D, the recommended doses are 600 IU per day for those under age 70 and 800 IU per day for anyone age 70 and older.

Quit smoking. Dr. Edler says smoking, and even secondhand smoke, can lower bone density and increase risk of osteoporosis. Watch your alcohol consumption. Dr. Edler says while alcohol intake alone doesn’t increase risk of osteoporosis, if you consume three or more alcoholic drinks per day, it can increase your risk. Prevent falls. “A couple of suggestions that will help you prevent falls are to use a night light and remove clutter from the floor,” said Dr. Edler. Dr. Edler says women typically need to be screened for osteoporosis beginning at age 65. “The main osteoporosis screening tool is called a DEXA scan. The results of the initial scan will determine the frequency and need for any future scans, along with the presence of any risk factors,” she explained. She also says if you’re a postmenopausal woman and any of the following apply then you should talk to your doctor about considering earlier screening: • You weigh less than 127 pounds • You have a history of a low trauma fracture, which is when you break a bone in a situation you wouldn’t expect to; such as while opening a window • You take certain medications including steroids • One of your parents had a history of a hip fracture • You’re a current smoker • You suffer with alcoholism • You have rheumatoid arthritis

“SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS WALKING CAN HELP. ANOTHER SUGGESTION IS TO WALK WITH A LIGHT SET OF WEIGHTS.” — Melisa Edler, MD

Remember, it’s never too early or too late to prevent osteoporosis, and following these recommendations can help you do that.

Get 30 minutes of daily exercise. “To prevent osteoporosis, you need to do weight-bearing exercise, which puts weight resistance on your bones,” explained Dr. Edler. “Something as simple as walking can help. Another suggestion is to walk with a light set of weights.”

How To Get The Care You Deserve? Choosing the Right Home Care Options: What Questions To Ask? Coping with aging, serious illness, recovery, disability or injury can be very challenging! Choosing the right type of care can be just as tough. It is helpful to know what the differences are among various types of care as you consider your options for the best source of help. Deciding what type of care is best for you or a loved one at home depends significantly on multiple factors. This includes what the care is intended to do, how long needed, patient diagnosis and level of ability to perform “Activities of Daily Living” (ADL). Home Care is more companionship and regular assistance with ADL’s so you can age comfortably in place (At Home). It is designed for people who need some help with day to day activities in the home or needs someone around in case of emergency. This type of care is often longterm, provided by trained aides. Services are paid by the individual. or covered by some type of personal or Medicaid insurance. So how do you select the right option for your loved one? What are some of the most asked questions? Part 1 Q: How many and what hours can you work per day? • ABC provides around the clock service, from 2 hours to 24 hour live-in care • Care is available 365 days of the year • Schedules are customized around the client lifestyle and family needs Q: What does insurance cover or do I have to pay? • You need to call your agent and ask about Long Term Care (LTC) coverage. • If you are eligible Medicaid also pays for these types of services. Contact your local office and inquire if you meet requirements. If eligible, the

care is at no charge to you and Medicaid program will determine how many hours you receive. • This is based on physical need, income, and assets • Financial requirements have a five year look-back. • Veterans can apply for Veterans Affairs (VA) Waiver • Agencies do accept private pay, usually requires deposit and is billed weekly • Consulting with an Elder Law Attorney is also highly recommended Q: Do you perform household duties for your clients? If so what can you do or cannot do? • Yes, ABC assist the family with small household chores • Light housekeeping: dusting, dishes, mopping, vacuuming, laundry • Meal Preparation • Personal Care: Bathing and Grooming • Errands • Companionship Q: What do we need to do to obtain your services? Always Best Care is a resource for your Home Care needs. We are available for free consultation and we can advise the best options for your particular situation. If we do not have the answer, we can point the community in the right direction. The main points to be gleaned are start preparing now and ask questions. Get the family together and deal with the inevitable while you can do it calmly as a unit. This is a lot for one person to handle, and every situation is different but you can be prepared to make the best choices. Testimonial: “Did you know that you can engage in planning to protect your assets from the costs of long term care? No matter if you have a 5-year planning window or not, there are strategies that can be implemented to preserve your life savings, set aside a nest egg for yourself, and provide for your family. The biggest takeaway – it’s never too early or too late to plan!” Amber B. Woodland, Esquire, PWW LAW

Health & Wellness Framing Your Beauty. It is often said that the proper selection of a frame can make a good painting exceptional. The same holds true with your beauty. Hello, my name is Nancy Richard. I am a licensed aesthetician and an optician, certified in SofTap permanent cosmetics as a technician and instructor. I have applied permanent cosmetics for 19 years and have owned a school, teaching permanent cosmetics for 16 years. I have a strong clinical background, having built an Aesthetic Program for a local plastic surgeon. Thousands of women like yourself have benefited from my services. Their personal beauty has been enhanced by the artistic framing I do. Just as a proper frame draws attention to the strengths of the painting, together we can select how best to enhance the strengths of your eyes, brows, and lips, and help with completing the final result of a mastectomy surgery. My desire is to introduce and bring balance to every person I apply or teach permanent cosmetics. Bringing balance to their body or facial features, will bring a change in their inner attitude, outlook and confidence. How? “Because if you think you look good, you feel good!”

Breast Cancer Is Not a Choice - But the Final Results Are!

Unfortunately, for some women, after their mastectomy surgery, chemo, radiation, hair loss or reconstruction, they are left having to accept new body changes. After breast reconstruction, nipple and areola enhancement are typically the final step. This treatment is a form of micropigmentation also known as Permanent Cosmetics or Cosmetic Tattooing. This can often create a realistic result restoring a natural appearance to the breast.

Permanent Cosmetics Frequently Asked Questions following Breast Cancer What options are available? A vast improvement of the earlier days, a 3-D effect is now possible. This is where a sense of depth and detail is created on the reconstructed breast restoring much of the natural features lost in surgery. What is the benefit of breast tattooing? It redirects the focal point. The focal point for the natural eye would be the scar. Applying the cosmetic tattooing would redirect the focal point away from the scar and back to the breast. In many cases, the tattooing can even cover some of the scarring. Does the tattooing procedure hurt? Topical anesthetics (both creams and gels) are applied to the desired area before and during the procedure to assure you the most comfortable experience possible. It is common to hear that the procedure was a pleasant surprise. How long will it take to recover? Other than having to use a light ointment on the procedure area for 7 days, you can return immediately to your common daily activities. How long will my permanent cosmetics last? As with any tattoo, the pigment will fade through time. Breast tattooing colors will usually stay longer than facial tattooing as there is not as much sun exposure and reaction to the ingredients used in facial products. What exactly is Permanent Cosmetics/ Cosmetic Tattooing? It is the art and science of implanting color into your skin. It’s putting the right color in the right place so you can look better in a realistic and natural way. Will I look like myself? Absolutely, surgery only changes the outward appearance, not who you are on the inside.

32 I Fall 2019

Following mastectomy surgery, it is an opportunity to help restore normalcy and balance that was present before surgery. Hair loss often occurs as a result of a treatment. Permanent Cosmetics will restore the appearance of the lost hair. Can I get my Permanent Cosmetics Cheaper? There’s truth in the old saying “You get what you pay for”. While it may save you money it is more likely you will soon regret your decision. Realistic results are challenging for the technician. It takes an artistic talent to recreate the symmetry and balance, a result often lost in surgery. What does a complete procedure consist of? Each procedure consists of an evaluation where color is chosen and a health history is completed. Before and after pictures are taken to help both the client and the technician maintain the client’s natural features. Also included is a follow-up visit about one month following the initial procedure. Are Permanent Cosmetics right for you? • Restore the self-esteem of those affected by radiation, chemotherapy and other conditions causing hair loss. • Provides good definition for those with fair hair or sparse brows, as well as those with undefined lips. • Excellent solution for those allergic to cosmetics or “tear” their make-up off. • Make-up is perfect every day. • Great for those with poor eyesight or difficulty with arthritic or aching hands. • Convenient. No need to apply daily. Fantastic for anyone with little or no time to apply cosmetics. • Great for those with an active, outdoor lifestyle.

Profiles

Meridith L. Rothstein I was born in Easton MD, and raised in Newark DE. I graduated from St Marks in New Castle County, and attended Widener University in Chester, Pa. I met my husband while working for Marriott in Virginia Beach, we were engaged 3 months after we met, love at first sight. We have traveled the world for his US Air Force career. I have two kids, a son who is in college in Philadelphia, and a daughter who attends Cape Henlopen High School. In April of 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage 2a Invasive Lobular Carcinoma, I was 39 year old. I was stunned. The first mammogram I had diagnosed me with breast cancer, the second mapped the double mastectomy I had 3 weeks later. I decided that I had been through too much in my life, and got angry at the cancer, angry and ready to fight. I did any and everything I could for the healthiest long-term outcome, to include- a double mastectomy with reconstruction, 6 rounds of chemotherapy and a complete hysterectomy(this was due to the Tamoxifen I’d be takiing and the studies showed the possibility of uterine cancer with Tamoxifen use). My husband was my rock throughout all of my treatment. He supported all decisions, and it strengthened our relationship. We had a great deal of support from our USAF family, as well as from our local friends and family. I also had a great Circle of Women who were my health care providers and have become great friends who still support me in my Survival to this day. As of April 17, 2019, I am 7 years cancer Free. My husband retired from the USAF in July of 2016, and we settled in nicely to retirement in Lewes DE. He is in school to begin his next adventure as a Real Estate Broker, and I am thrilled and blessed to be working for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition helping newly diagnosed as well as my sister survivors continue on their journey toward good health. I am also working with and advocating for the National Breast Cancer Coalition to End Breast Cancer by the year 2020.

Meghan Morgan

Patricia L. Stiles

My name is Meghan Morgan and I am a 48-yearold wife, mother, and grandmother. I have been married to my husband Tony for 23 years. We have a daughter Autumn and son Nick. My joy and motivation to go thru this process has been my family – especially my grandson Lincoln!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer during the late summer of 2013, when I was 59. I always had my annual mammogram before school started because both my husband and I were busy teachers and drama directors at our respective schools in West Central Pennsylvania. When the lab called to ask me to come in for a second mammogram, I wasn’t too concerned. I had dense breasts, and periodically this had happened. When they called me to schedule the biopsy, I started to worry. I remember that I was standing in front of the toilet paper display in the grocery store when the doctor called to confirm the diagnosis. I put back the 4 pack of toilet paper and, instead picked up the 36 roll pack. I remember thinking, “Now, I must live long enough to use up all of this toilet paper!” I subsequently had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I was fortunate to have not needed chemo or radiation. The support of my husband, family members, colleagues, students, and friends kept me going throughout my healing. I am generally an upbeat person, and I also credit my sense of humor for helping me cope. I discovered that if I could find the humor in the situation, that it kept me from getting depressed or feeling sorry for myself. I can still make others laugh by telling my funny hospital stories!

I retired from the State of Delaware, Division of Developmental Disabilities Services after 27 years in August 2017. In the summer of 2016, we purchased part of Ryan’s Blueberry Farm in, Frankford, DE with plans for that to be my second career. We were successful with the new business Kingsley Orchards until my annual mammogram October 2018. The results were triple negative breast cancer – This type of breast cancer is VERY aggressive and has a high potential for reoccurrence. With this information, we decided to sell the farm to reduce my stress and allow me to spend as much time with family as possible. After a 2nd opinion at John Hopkins, it was very reassuring to know that Tunnell Cancer Center in Rehoboth offers identical treatment. Lumpectomy, chemo and radiation are now considered equal to mastectomy. I followed the plan and I was fortunate my cancer was stage 1 with no lymph node involvement. Over the last 8 months, I had lumpectomy, 16 rounds of chemo, 4 Neulasta injections, and 20 radiation treatments. The treatment team, volunteers and pre chemo medications at Tunnell Cancer Center were FANTASTIC— I praise God for my family, friends, church, facebook support groups, Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition – Meredith, and Tunnell Center Breast Cancer Navigator- Kathy. There are many resources available: including Cancer Support Community, and Women Supporting Women. These programs offer free wigs, hats, 1:1 support and counseling. My recommendation: be positive, pray, live each day to the fullest, enjoy your family and friends, and get your annual mammogram!

One lesson that breast cancer taught me is that tomorrow is not guaranteed. Consequently, in 2016, my husband and I decided to retire early and move to Rehoboth Beach. I do miss my school and students, but stay quite busy in retirement. I volunteer at CAMP Rehoboth and with Immanuel Shelter. I sing with CAMP Chorus, usher at Clearspace Theater and have helped with theater productions at CAMP Rehoboth. I am an active member of my community HOA Board. I am also a Mentor with DBCC. While I am grateful for the skilled surgeons and wonderful medical care I received in Pennsylvania, there was not the support system in place in PA as there is here in Delaware. The programs offered by Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition are indispensable to women during all stages of the breast cancer journey.

Eileen Guerke

Vincenza Fabber

Mike Baker

Eileen, age 54, resides in Rehoboth Beach with husband Barry and their dog Lucy Bear. Prior to her initial breast cancer diagnosis (stage 2b) in 2016 she was an avid triathlete competing in over 50 MultiSport events in her forties. After recovering from a double mastectomy she returned to teaching throughout chemotherapy treatments.

Vincenza Fabber was born in NYC (Manhattan), in an area known as “Little Italy”. Her grandmother, mother and aunt were cancer survivors. Vinnie was frequently ill as a child. By age 5, she was diagnosed with leukemia. Much of her youth was spent in hospitals. Vinnie didn’t know she had leukemia, only that she was very ill. One evening while in the hospital, her uncle asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. Her response: “A psychologist”…

She connected with Lois at the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition and received a mentor. The mentor helped her with her journey through chemo. She retired early to enjoy life at the beach. She has joined in numerous Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition activities and is interested in a yoga retreat.

Upon graduation from high school, she got married and soon after had the first (of 6) children. Her working career started on Wall Street, while attending nursing school. Then, she purchased a take-out Chinese restaurant. This turned out to be a very profitable investment, leading her to develop and sell several more before leaving New York and moving to Pennsylvania.

Mike Baker is the founder of C.M.Baker Photography with over 25 years experience. His photography ventures have been quite diverse. Throughout the year you may find him shooting a wedding, a Quinceañera, in the pits of a NASCAR race at Dover Downs and now at front stage at the Firefly Festival or flying over doing aerials. Giving back to the community has always been an important part of it all. Mike was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” from CDCC (Central De Chamber of Comm.) in 2005, ”Volunteer of the Year” from Kent County Tourism 2010,”Chairman’s Outstanding Partnership Award from CDCC in 2010 along with “Business Person of the Year” from CDCC in 2008. Since 1997, Mike has been the “official” photographer for the KC Heart Ball and for the “Go Red” in Kent County since it’s onset. Some of the past and present organizations have been: MD Kidney Foundation, De Breast Cancer Coalition, Various De Fire Companies, Bayhealth Foundation, Beebe Hospital, Dover Air Force Base, Autism DE, Relay for Life, MS Bike to the Bay and the Amish Bike Tour , to name a few.

At the end of that school year in 2017 she was diagnosed with stage 4 bone mets. Since then, thankfully, the cancer has remained stable.

As time went by, Vinnie’s health improved. There were many experimental treatments for Leukemia back then. Not sure what treatment regimen was used but by age 9 she was in remission and eventually leukemia free.

Vinnie enrolled in a community college and began taking early childhood development and psychology courses. Several colleges and universities later, she had acquired multiple Associates, Bachelors, Masters and her PhD in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Fabber’s degrees and certifications include: Early Childhood Education, Human Services, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Certified Clinical Correctional Health Care Provider, Certified Hypnotherapist, Registered Play Therapist, Filial Therapist, EAGALA Equine Assisted Therapy certified, Licensed Mental Health Professional, Certified CPR Trainer, Certified Trauma Informed Care Specialist, and a National Institute of Correction Crisis and Hostage Negotiator. • In 2002, Vinnie relocated to Delaware and became the Statewide Director of Behavioral Health Services for the Department of Correction (DOC). • Post DOC retirement, she continues to provide behavioral health services in private practice in Georgetown, Delaware and oversight of treatment services for the Joseph Patrick Fabber Memorial Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit she founded in 2001 with a primary focus on suicide prevention.

Veterinary Services Peninsula Veterinary Services is a full-service, AAHA-accredited hospital located in Long Neck, Delaware. Owner Dr. April Reid moved from Brooklyn, New York in 2015 to start a practice in this area after spending summers in Rehoboth growing up. Dr. Reid is a graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. She previously owned a thoroughbred racetrack practice for 14 years before making the move to small animal practice. Dr. Reid works closely with several local rescue organizations. She is currently serving as the vice president of the Delaware Veterinary Medical Association and pursuing board certification in veterinary practice. In her spare time, Dr. Reid enjoys spending time with her two Great Danes, Ambrose and Amelia, and her three cats.

What Should I Feed My Pet?? That is the number one question a veterinarian is asked, especially lately with numerous recalls and studies that have implicated certain foods with heart disease. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this as there is no one-size-fits-all food for our pets. Here are several areas to consider when choosing a food. Life Stage This one would seem to be obvious but it can be confusing depending on the breed of your dog. Puppy foods tend to be higher in calories because growing requires energy. The age at which your puppy should be switched to an adult food is when they have reached 80% of their adult size. This occurs earlier in small dogs than in large dogs. Large breed puppies are more prone to developmental bone diseases so they should normally eat large breed puppy food due to the calcium to phosphorus ratio. Senior dog foods usually contain increased protein and fiber but fewer calories, as older dogs tend to eat less but also are not as active, so obesity can become an issue. In addition, there are “All Life Stages” foods, which most dogs can eat throughout their lives no matter their age. This is a good choice when there are multiple dogs in the household and it is impossible to separate them for feeding. Grain-Free? While grain-free dog food sounds healthier, the truth is that only a tiny percentage of dogs (less than 1%) are actually allergic to grains. Grains serve as a source of carbohydrates for dogs, which they need for energy. Grains also provide a source of fiber, which is

important for gastrointestinal health. Grain-free food therefore must use other ingredients as a carbohydrate source and these are usually potatoes. Chickpeas, lentils, or peas. These alternative carbohydrates can be higher in calories and lead to weight gain. In the recent FDA investigation into the increased rate of heart disease in dogs eating grain-free diets, 93 percent contained peas or lentils and 42 percent contained potatoes or sweet potatoes as the carbohydrate source.

package that the food is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Consumers can call the dog food manufacturer and find out which method was used by the company to verify nutritional adequacy. Food Allergies Food allergies or food sensitivity in pets can manifest as digestive problems, skin problems and even behavioral problems. The most common allergies are to chicken, beef or dairy products. Elimination

diets or allergy testing may be needed to obtain an absolute diagnosis to determine the culprit. If the sensitivity is to a certain protein, the options are to switch to another protein source or to a hydrolyzed protein. Hydrolyzed proteins are those that have been broken down chemically so the immune system does not recognize them as a protein to which it is sensitive. These foods are often prescription foods.

By-Products and Marketing By-products are not evil. By-products are just a secondary product derived when a primary product is produced. Chickens are prepared for human consumption and by-products are everything that isn’t in the package sold in the grocery store. The byproducts are high in essential amino acids and have high bioavailability for our pets. These by-products are now being sold in pet food stores as dehydrated treats or cleverly marketed as exotic ingredients in boutique-brand foods. AAFCO The Association of American Feed Control does not regulate pet food. Its mission is to protect the consumer through labeling guidelines. In order for a food to be labeled as “complete and balanced” it must meet nutritional standards established by AAFCO in one of two ways-feeding trials or nutrient content analysis. The current FDA investigation is exposing the fact that the nutrient content analysis may not be enough to ensure a food is safe for your dog. If a food has not met AAFCO standards it must state on the

Favorite Tips from the Professional Staff at Oceanova, the Spa at Ocean View

Oceanova, the Spa at Ocean View, would like to share advice and tips from our staff, on how the services we offer can help improve your wellbeing and how you can continue to maintain these benefits between your appointments.

Skin Care Featuring Image and A Natural Difference professional Skin Care Oceanova Spa’s staff of aestheticians including Michelle Bossard, Stacey Ruberti, Lorena Trinidad and Amanda Vosselman offer their advice and recommends for an effective skin care regiment. Michelle, an aesthetician since 2007, believes that there are many simple things one can do to maximize their skincare regiment. First, give a new product at least 6 weeks to effectively work, since your skin regenerates itself every 6 weeks. Second, if your skin is feeling extra dry, layer a thicker moisturizer on at night, since your skins’ natural oils come out at night. This process will remoisturize your skin. Third, keep your eye cream in the fridge. The coolness of the cream will help with any puffiness or bags under the eyes when applied in the morning. Finally, keep skin care products in the shower, like your masque or exfoliant. The steam will open your pores. This is also a time saver, allowing you to do this while washing your hair or shaving. Stacey recommends adding Dermaplaning to your facial. Dermaplaning is a gentle way to exfoliate, remove peach fuzz and improve the skins overall texture. It will leave your skin feeling like glass and will enable makeup go on nice and smooth. Stacey’s favorite tip is that a “serum” always goes onto the skin first after cleansing and toning, in order to deliver the active ingredients to the skin most efficiently. Then apply eye cream, which can also be used on the lips. Finish with a nice moisturizer. Amanda, a PSU graduate in kinesiology, health and wellness, has 14 years of experience as an aesthetician. Amanda’s favorite quote is “You can’t treat your skin

like a flip flop and expect it to look like a Louis Vuitton!”. The magic number for scheduling a professional facial treatment is monthly. Amanda says it is a great boost for your skin with techniques that cannot be done at home. Such as peels, dermaplaning, professional extractions and facial massage (does more than you would think!). Amanda’s 4 essentials are cleanser, vitamin C serum, retinol, and SPF. Peptides and niacinamides are two power players as well. Staff favorite products 1. A Natural Difference “Hydrolane”– Hyaluronic acid product retains over 1,000 times its weight in water and plumps the skin naturally. 2. A Natural Difference “Repair Serum” – Pure plant stem cell for anti-aging protection to revive aging skin cells. Protects from UVA photo damage and boost skins defense to keep skin plump and hydrated. Stacey uses this in the summer. 3. Image “ Vital C Serum” – Brightens the skin and protects against sun damage and promotes collagen production. 4. A Natural Difference “ Erase-ALine” – A combination of Vitamin A and Glycol Formula used as a night treatment for cellular turnover for a smoother complexion. 5. Image “Prevention 30 SPF Tinted Moisturizer” – Lightweight tinted moisturizer that can be worn alone or under makeup for a flawless completion. 6. Image “I MASK Anti-aging Hydrogel Sheet Mask” - Contains an infusion of botanicals, peptides and antioxidants to support the look of smooth, luminous and youthful skin. 7. Image “I MASK Hydrating Hydrogel Sheet Mask”- Delivers instant hydration to skin that is dry, dull or depleted. Cooling and soothing, it refreshes and revives thirsty skin with mineral-rich waters and hyaluronic acid. A blend of amino acids, aloe vera and antioxidant extracts leave skin radiant and glowing. Massage Therapy Oceanova Spa is very proud of our staff of Massage Therapists. Our family of therapists offer many years of experience. Michele Bartley, Denise Bossard, Michelle Bossard, Yolanda McCoy, Whitney Nilan, Stacie Shelburne and Sara Street offer information and benefits of massage. Oceanova offers a variety of modalities including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point, Pregnancy, Thai Foot, Cranial Sacral and Reflexology. Sara, LMT, and has over 20 years of experience in massage therapy. Sara wants clients to know that the benefits of massage include relief from chronic pain, stress, insomnia, depression, poor posture, and poor

mobility. Sara says “One of the main joys of being a massage therapist is seeing how clients benefit from these different massage techniques and seeing how their chronic concerns or conditions improve”. Denise, CMT has over 16 years of massage experience. Denise believes that what you do after your massage is equally as important as the massage itself. She emphasizes the importance of drinking a lot of water after a massage because hydration is the key to muscle function. She also recommends simple stretches daily that can help relieve stress. Denise believes that massage benefits go beyond physical, and also benefit mental wellbeing. Stacie, LMT has 20 years of massage experience. She has worked for a chiropractic office for several years. Stacie says “What I like most about what I do is making clients aware of what is going on in their own body”. Communication is the key for her to do the best massage for her client. Michele Bartley LMT, has over 8 years of massage experience working with area chiropractors and at Oceanova. What Michele loves most about massage therapy is the ability to make people feel better, alleviating their pain and helping them to relax. “Seeing

people feel physically better though massage therapy is incredibly rewarding”. Michele’s advice to clients is to use their body evenly. This goes especially for women who carry heavy hand bags. They need to remember to switch their bag from side to side often. Whitney came into the field of Massage Therapy in 2009 because she has always wanted to help people. Something simple she recommends to her clients, that they can do at home, is to soak in Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). By soaking in Epsom salts it has been claimed that the body can absorb these nutrients through the skin. These nutrients will help assist the nervous system, ease back pain and aching limbs to further enhance levels of relaxation and stress from the massage. We hope that the information we have shared has been helpful to you. Oceanova, The Spa at Ocean View, welcomes you to come and experience a service with our staff. Buyer Beware: Tips for Safe Online Shopping We would welcome the opportunity to:

Presented by Chris Theis The Christmas holiday is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about buying your gifts. Millions of shoppers are bypassing brick-and-mortar stores, as well as their respective websites, in favor of purchasing those gifts or personal items from individual online sellers. For many people, sites like Craigslist and eBay offer a chance to save on everyday items and luxury products, both new and used—all from the comfort of their own homes. Yet, while online shopping may be a convenient way to find deals and oneof-a-kind items, it’s important to protect your identity and financial information, particularly when dealing with individual sellers. Before you purchase anything listed on an online classified ad, auction, or marketplace site, keep the following precautions in mind. Online classifieds On classified sites run by newspapers and popular venues like Craigslist, sellers tend to offer used items and may be open to negotiation. Since most transactions are done in cash, there’s little buyer protection. To stay safe: • Never wire funds. If a seller asks you to wire payment using Western Union or MoneyGram, you’re likely dealing with a scammer. • Safeguard your personal information. Sellers on Craigslist and similar sites don’t need your personal financial information, such as credit card numbers. To keep your information safe, it’s best to pay with cash. • Don’t go it alone. Always take someone with you when meeting a seller. Be sure to tell a friend or family member where you’ll be and take

your cell phone with you. • Pick up in a public place. Choose a busy location to meet the seller. If you’re picking up the item at the seller’s house, it’s particularly important to have a friend or family member join you. Online auctions Online auction sites like eBay let you view and bid on products from around the globe. Some sites also allow you to buy items outright instead of bidding. To stay safe: • Read the fine print. Before you enter a bid, be sure to review the entire listing, as well as the sales policies of the auction site. Remember: you win, you pay. Once you’ve won an auction, you’re obligated to complete the transaction. • Check out buyer feedback. Auction sites let buyers post feedback on their purchases, which can give you insight into a seller’s business practices. Be sure the seller has a high rating before making a purchase. If lackluster feedback prompts you to hesitate, it’s probably best to look for the item elsewhere. • Pay with a credit card or PayPal account. Using a debit card linked to your checking account may not be safe, as most debit cards don’t offer fraud protection. You may also want to consider buyer protection; eBay offers such a plan that covers many items purchased on its site. • Beware of fraudulent e-mails. After you’ve made a purchase, be wary of any unusual e-mails you may receive. Avoid opening suspicious messages or clicking on links they contain. Online marketplaces Online marketplaces such as Amazon, Etsy, and Overstock are one-stop shops where

Law

CONTACTING A LAWYER IS THE RIGHT CALL Reneta L. Green-Streett is an attorney in the Morris James Personal Injury Practice Group. Reneta’s litigation experience includes trials in all of Delaware’s courts of law with a focus on Superior Court practice. It is this litigation experience that enables Reneta to offer her clients insightful and practical advice throughout the life of their case. Reneta is also an adjunct professor at Delaware Tech’s Dover and Georgetown campuses teaching torts in the paralegal program. When she’s not zealously advocating for her clients, Reneta can be spotted kickboxing, spinning, or playing with her dogs. She fancies herself a bit of a “foodie,” and loves to try new restaurants. She also enjoys a tortured love of the Philadelphia Eagles. By Reneta L. Green-Streett With over 200 combined years in practice representing the injured, we can look back and say it has been our pleasure to meet and work with so many wonderful and deserving clients. What still amazes us to this day is how so many of our clients struggled with the thought of calling a lawyer after being injured. Despite the fact they were injured as a result of someone else’s negligence or reckless behavior, they still struggled with making the call. Many of our clients do not want to be viewed as litigious or “sue happy.” We are thankful for the opportunity to have guided many through the challenges of being injured (medical bills, wage loss, vehicle damage, struggling with the activities of daily living, impact on relationships with family and friends). We are certain they would advise any “potential client” that contacting a lawyer is the right call. Let us share with you some of our observations as to the reasons behind the hesitation, in hopes of making the decision to contact an attorney a “no-brainer.”

be known. It can be days, weeks, or months before one’s injuries fully manifest. Sometimes, the insurance company’s quick offer of a cash settlement seems like the answer to a prayer for someone struggling financially. The minor aches and pains she may be experiencing at the time are viewed as temporary – and certainly no reason to pass up the “opportunity” of making this month’s rent or mortgage payment. In exchange for settlement cash, an injured person must sign a document known as a “Release.” By signing this document, an injured person gives up any and all claims she may have against the at-fault party, now or in the future. Even if the injuries become serious and disabling over time, an injured party is typically stuck with the short-sighted deal she made with the insurance company. Since this person ultimately never contacts an attorney, it is difficult to estimate how many individuals succumb to this “deal.” In fairness, clients over the years have shared stories of upstanding insurance

One of the reasons attorneys never get the call from a potential injured client is that the insurance company for the at-fault driver has pounced on them to settle immediately. The sometimesirresistible offer of a cash settlement is often made within hours or days of the motor vehicle accident. If the insurance adjuster can get to an injured person before she has contacted an attorney, the chances of settling the case on the spot are much higher. Why would someone settle her claim so quickly before knowing the extent of her injuries? The truth is that, unless someone has been in a motor vehicle accident before, a person may not be aware of how long it takes before the full extent of one’s injuries may

adjusters advising injured persons to consult with an attorney before settling their claims. Whether or not such advice is offered, an injured person must take personal responsibility for the choices she makes. Choosing to contact an experienced personal injury lawyer before settling one’s claim is always the right call to make. Such a call is always free to a client. For many of those who ultimately contact a lawyer, the decision to even reach out to a lawyer was not an easy one. In our experience, the # 1 reason why potential clients hesitate to reach out is that they are embarrassed. They do not want their lawyer to think that they are “one of those kind of people (finger quotes added).” What do they mean by “one of those kind of people?” They do not want to be confused with the person who pursues a frivolous claim or the person who pursues a claim in an effort to “win the lottery.” These clients need to be assured that an ethical attorney would not take a case that is frivolous (or lacks merit).

A legitimate case is one in which the other party is at fault for the accident, and the injured party is truly injured. Injuries often range the spectrum from bruises to those injuries causing death. An ethical lawyer is also going to assure the client that this is not about “winning the lottery” for the client or the lawyer. As we explain to clients, our role as a personal injury lawyer is to even the playing field. The insurance company is looking to resolve every claim for as little as possible. Retaining a lawyer is protection from being taken advantage of and to ensure fair and reasonable treatment throughout the process. There is never a down side to reaching out to an attorney sooner rather than later. There is no need to be embarrassed. We are here to protect you and to ensure that you are treated fairly. We are even here to tell you when you do not need a lawyer. Remember that contacting an experienced personal injury lawyer is always free, and is always the right call to make!

Is It Time to Refinance Your Mortgage? You love your home. But your mortgage? That might be a different story. If you’re like many homeowners, sky-high interest or the wrong type of mortgage could keep you from enjoying your home for all it’s worth. Refinancing could be your answer. With this popular solution, you can keep the home you love but swap out your existing mortgage for one that’s a better fit. Here are eight signs that refinancing is right for you. 1. Rates Are Low Mortgage interest rates are constantly changing, so timing is essential. If you want to lock in a fixed rate, you’ll want to refinance when average mortgage rates are low. If you got your current mortgage during a time of high interest, switching to a lower-rate loan could save you many thousands of dollars (use our mortgage calculator to see for yourself). While rates on home loans are starting to rise, they’re still historically low. According to Freddie Mac, in 1981, the average rate on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages hit a whopping 16.63%! That’s higher than many credit cards today. Because rates are currently very low, now is a great time to refinance if you meet some of the other conditions below. 2. You’ve Built Up Equity Borrowers who have had their home for a while often benefit most from refinancing. Along with getting typically lower rates, longtime homeowners won’t have the extra cost of private mortgage insurance (required until you’ve paid off at least 20% of your home). Also, you’ll need to have equity in your home if you’re looking to access extra cash (see #6 below).

50 I Fall 2019

3. Your Finances Are in Good Shape If you’ve been in your home for a while, chances are you’ve advanced in your career and now have more income, more savings, and better credit than when you got your mortgage. Strong finances, including a great credit score, are key to getting the best available rate. 4. You Want to Own Your Home Sooner The 30-year mortgage is popular because it lowers your payments by spreading them out over a longer term. However, the extended term allows more time for interest to grow.

refinance can be used to consolidate your first and second mortgage, paying them off with one lowerrate loan and one simple monthly payment.

the value of your equity in your home. 7. You Plan to Stay Refinancing requires an upfront investment: up to a few thousand dollars in closing costs. Through lower payments, you’ll make this money back over time, which is why refinancing only makes sense if you don’t plan on moving in the foreseeable future.

Ready to Refinance? We’re ready to help! At Dover Federal Credit Union, we’ll help you find the right refinancing option and make the process a breeze.

8. It Will Simplify Your Finances Some homeowners use the equity they’ve built up to take out a second mortgage such as a home equity line of credit. This can be helpful, but it also leaves them with two separate mortgages to keep track of. A

Turn to us for great low rates and flexible options, including our low-rate Equity Advantage loan that pays off your home in only 10 years. To learn more and get started, reach out today, or start our easy online application right now.

Provided they can afford higher monthly payments, homeowners who want to save money and own their home sooner (such as those approaching retirement) often refinance to a term that lets them pay off their home faster. 5. You Want Lower Payments On the other hand, you may want to save money now by lowering your payment. Maybe you financed your home with an adjustable-rate mortgage, and your rate jumped up when the initial fixed-rate period came to an end. Or, maybe you’d like to spread out your payments over a longer term and lock in a low fixed rate with predictable monthly payments. 6. You Want Access to Cash If you’re planning to build an addition, redo your kitchen, or help your child pay for college, refinancing could be a great way to access low-cost funds. This is done through cash-out refinancing, in which you borrow more than the loan balance, then pay back this extra cash as part of your monthly payments. It’s important to keep an eye on the current housing market. Home prices fluctuate, and if local home prices have dropped, this will affect

A Gift of an Asset Known as Life Insurance Life insurance for your children or grandchildren is one step to setting them up for future financial confidence. It can help guarantee their insurability in the event of a future change of health. During their lifetime they may have opportunities to purchase additional insurance without underwriting. Permanent Whole Life Insurance has a cash value component which can increase over time (1). That future cash value is an asset that can be borrowed against for things such as a down payment on a house, school debt, etc. or allow the policy to pay for itself with the interest and dividends that grow over time. (2,3) 1) Some whole life policies do not have cash values in the first two years. Talk to your financial representative and refer to your individual whole life policy illustration for more information. 2) Policy benefits are reduced by any outstanding loan or loan interest and/or withdrawals. Dividends, if any, are affected by policy loans and loan interest. Withdrawals above the cost basis may result in taxable ordinary income. If the policy lapses, or is surrendered, any outstanding loans considered gain in the policy may be subject to ordinary income taxes. If the policy is a Modified Endowment Contract (MEC), loans are treated like withdrawals, but as gain first, subject to ordinary income taxes. If the policy owner is under 59 1/2, any taxable withdrawal may also be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty. 3) Dividends are not guaranteed. Business A&E Properties DE is owned and operated by Albert and Elmina Miller. They reside in Dover, Del. with their two wonderful daughters, Kayla and Ashlie. Over the years they have built their family on a strong foundation of faith, generosity, and integrity and they strive to incorporate these principles into all that they do. Albert and Elmina Miller started this company back in 2007, but it wasn’t until January of 2017 that Albert decided to take the leap of faith and go all-in with the real estate business. He was raised in the Amish community in Dover, Delaware and at age twelve began working in the construction field with his family. By the time he turned sixteen, he was a full-time bricklayer and from there continued in the masonry field for the next three years. After turning twenty, he started his own business framing houses for big developers throughout Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. That same year, Albert and Elmina made the hard decision to leave the Amish community. This decision was tough, but they remain forever grateful for the hardworking and committed foundation that they were raised in. A&E Property Solutions is a real estate investment and rental property company and its sister company, A&E Building Service, is a home building and renovation company. Together, they make up A&E Properties DE, a full service real estate development and investment company. Albert looks forward to many years ahead of fulfilling A&E Properties DE’s mission, “We build partnerships to create beautiful properties with integrity.”

How Much Money Can I Really Make Investing in Real Estate? Learn how you can make a great ROI without ever lifting a finger. By Albert Miller, Owner Who are we? We are A&E Properties of Delaware! We are a Real Estate Development + Real Estate Investment company. We own and operate A&E Property Solutions, a real estate investment and rental property company as well as A&E Building Service, our home building and renovation company. Our team’s mission is building partnerships to create beautiful properties with integrity. What is a real estate investment? At A&E, a real estate investment is a private funding opportunity for you to put your money/funding to work for you. The minimum investment amount is $50K because we want to ensure that your funding is put in a position where you get the greatest ROI! The size of the investment will decide on what can be accomplished with it. For example, with smaller investments, lots or land can be purchased, with $100K or more distressed properties can be purchased and necessary renovations can be made. You can look at your project’s funding, see the process of how your funding is at work, and, at the end, see the transformation of the property. Typically return rates are 10-15% depending on the individual investor.

keep an eye on the market and the world status, to minimize the risk. All funding interest is compounded monthly from the time real estate is purchased through renovation then going back on the market and finally being sold again. Typically a property can be flipped in 4-6 months. You will get your funding back at the end of your term and can use your earnings to reinvest as much as you’d like so that your funding does not sit idle too long! What are some examples of actual real estate investments? One Year Investment. Investment of $150,000 on Sept 22, 2017 at a 10% interest rate returned $165,706 on Sept 21, 2018.

Six Month Investment. Investment of $75,000 on Apr 23, 2018 at a 12% interest rate returned $80,216 on Oct 22, 2018. Five Year Investment. Investment $100,000 on Oct 4, 2018 at a 10% interest rate expected to return $164,530 on Oct 4, 2023. Interested in Investing? We recommend heading to our website at aepropertiesde.com to learn more about investing in real es-tate and what your next steps are. Why Ductless Air Conditioning and Heating? Do you have rooms or additions to your house that just don’t seem to get enough heat or cool air as compared to the rest of the house? You may want to consider adding a ductless system to maximize the comfort in these areas. Mitsubishi Electric offers a superior alternative to traditional HVAC systems. The ductless systems focus on individual rooms and living spaces, versus a central system’s one size fits all approach. Mitsubishi Electric systems are more energyefficient, flexible, and easier to install – as proven by decades of successful use in Europe, Asia, and across the globe. Mitsubishi Ductless products reduce energy costs and easily provide solutions for: • Hot and cold rooms • Additions and Renovations • Enclosed patios • Homes without space for ductwork • Larger, multi zone living spaces Ductless air conditioning and heating systems are growing in popularity throughout the Mid-Atlantic region because of their efficiency, ease of use, and reliability. They work by using wall-mounted blowers to cool and heat rooms directly. They use no ductwork and are connected to a unit outside the home.

Pro Works, a Diamond Contractor for Mitsubishi Electric, is a certified installation specialist for Mitsubishi ductless heating and air conditioning systems. What’s in Your Water?

Beware: Water regulations lack thoroughness and vary widely. Public “treated” water contains chlorine, sodium, fluoride, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) comprised of household products, oil, and gas.

Hence, the cost to modernize mass water treatment facilities is prohibitive. So, the burden falls to individual homeowners, businesses, and institutions to utilize the best of modern technology to achieve the healthiest water possible. A’NovaEco has created a sophisticated design that removes the following: • Over 99 percent of chlorine • Up to 98 percent of lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, plus • Bacteria, viruses, and parasites such as cryptosporidium and giardia • Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and VOCs • Taste- and odor-causing compounds • Nitrates and nitrites, hydrogen sulfide, iron, manganese, arsenic It also controls the buildup of bacteria, algae, and fungi.

It softens water via the Care-Free Water Conditioner which is an inline catalytic water treatment system. The combination of turbulence and a small electrical field causes a separation of the mineral particles in the water, which changes their behavior, softening the calcium and magnesium properties and leaving them in the water. These are minerals our bodies need for our bones, metabolism, and muscle health. These changed properties of calcium and magnesium will not corrode house systems. A Vortech backwash element allows the system to backwash and selfclean every two to four days. Imagine using water from any faucet,...drinking from it, cooking with it, washing in it, and watering your garden with it

No Salt No Scale No Filter to Change No Maintenance No Cost Warranties

A’NovaEco costs the same or less that other systems, yet it performs better and lasts longer!

Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions Leading the Field in Workplace Diversity has raised the bar,” he said. “Our family calls Lisa the Sherlock Holmes of the bug — she exemplifies honesty, integrity, and professionalism.”

Lisa Mace, termite technician with Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions, examines the conditions in a crawl space.

In a growing industry, any business wanting to stay on top must develop a skilled and cohesive team. This entails hiring the best talent available and cultivating that talent to provide the best service possible. In certain industries, a pre-defined notion of what this type of talent looks like is endemic. In traditionally male-dominated fields such as pest control, only 8.4 percent of the workforce is made up of females, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But this number is on the rise, up from only 3.7 percent in 2014. With the number of women entering the pest control field more than doubling in just under five years, it is important to understand the vital role this type of diversity plays in this historically male-dominated field. At Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions, 29 percent of the staff is female, more than triple the industry average. Four women total are on staff serving in roles including bookkeeping, customer service, and field technician. Belinda Bennett, owner, along with her husband Dean, said, “I strive to recognize greatness when I see it, and my goal was to put these ladies in the spotlight. They give our customers their undivided attention and go above and beyond to exemplify our mission at Bennett Termite.” When Lisa Mace entered the pest control field in 1994, there were notably less woman in the field than

there are today. At that point, her quest to be the best at getting rid of pests was a balancing act to ensure she had plenty of time for her kids. After thirteen years in the industry in Florida and taking some time off to be with her kids, Lisa is now going on three years with Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions as a highly trained professional with state certifications for termite and general pests and a leading asset among their roster of experts. “There have been plenty of times when I’ve gone to the home of a woman or a senior citizen who’s been glad to see a woman at her door,” she said on an early spring morning outside the home of a Bennett customer in Milton. “Sometimes people feel more comfortable bringing a woman into their house.” “I’m also one of those people who likes to move,” she added. “And that’s good because in a typical day I could be working a hammer drill in a crawl space, digging a trench for termite work, or dealing with 350 feet of pressurized hose.” “You’re constantly scooping it up and moving it around but you have to make sure you don’t disturb flower beds. But even then you have to look out for other things. Some houses have the most beautiful decorations, like those glass bulbs that light up at night time. You do not want to knock those down.” As noted by longtime Bennett Termite customer Bob Kapke, it also helps to know your way around the deepest mysteries of the bug and rodent universe. “We’ve had the pleasure of dealing with many termite pest companies with our 32 houses during our life together, but I must say that Lisa of Bennett Termite Pest Solutions

Today, gender norms are being busted in the field and beyond. According to a survey done by Insight Pest Control, 83 percent of the women surveyed “feel that the industry at large has become more welcoming toward women since they began their career.” From out in the field to back at the office, woman are having a greater impact in the world of pest control. The effect of women in pest control is not lost on those at Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions.

The women of Bennett Termite: (left to right) Jennifer Sokola, Pam Robey, Michelle Wood

None of this praise surprises Dean Bennett, who, after 15 years of managing pest control companies, founded Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions with his wife Belinda in 2011. In fact, it’s the kind of quality service Belinda and Dean have always expected from the highly-trained and certified technicians who provide pest services to residential, commercial, and hospitality properties. While customers see that same level of professionalism from all 12 men who work alongside Lisa on the technician and sales teams, Belinda is especially proud to support the women who are building and continuing successful careers in the pest control industry. In addition to Lisa, Bennett Termite’s office staff comprised of Pam Robey, Michele Wood, and Jennifer Sokola always make an excellent impression. As Belinda sees it, “Pam and Jennifer work hard to keep daily schedules organized, and pride themselves on always being available to customers and to foremen on job sites and technicians with questions about routes. Michele keeps accounts receivable and payable ledgers precisely up to date while aiding in HR compliance. These technicians and sales people depend on them.” “Our job is to make our customers as happy as possible,” said Pam, a customer service and scheduling

specialist who’s been with Bennett Termite since 2011. “We’ve treated commercial properties and residential homes with special needs where you have to provide all kinds of special care and have a lot of commercial accounts

on the phone. They build such great relationships. Customer service — and the quality of our service — are the backbone of our business, so Dean and I are grateful for everything they do to make us better.”

“There have been plenty of times when I’ve gone to the home of a woman or a senior citizen who’s been glad to see a woman at her door.” where everything is very time sensitive. On any given day I could be dealing with a builder who needs termite pretreatment paperwork, or the city or county that needs business licenses before they’ll even let us start a job. Each customer has unique needs that we’re determined to meet.” Long-term customers like Beachwood, Inc., a custom home builder from Showell, Md., are able to testify to what these women bring to the table. “The service technicians are prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable. In the office Pam, Jennifer, and Michelle are great to work with; scheduling pretreats and termite inspections, they are second to none. We very much enjoy our relationship with Bennett Termite and Pest Solutions.” “A lot of our success has come from our communication with customers,” Belinda emphasized. “They love the way Pam, Michele, and Jennifer are

The entire team of technicians are equally adept at the physical work required to treat pests at the source. Along with the salesforce, they are proficient and knowledgeable of green and organic treatments for termites and general pests. The culture at Bennett Termite provides ample opportunity for both men and women to be successful in their respective positions. According to the Insight Pest Solutions survey, 93 percent of the woman surveyed either “agree or strongly agree that pest management is a good industry for women.” As the barriers are removed, and the industry stigma fades, it is expected that more women will enter this field, once thought of as a place only for males. As Belinda stated, “A great employee is great to have and hard to find. Dean and I consider ourselves lucky to have these women sitting on the frontline each and every day.”

At Can Do, we have a Passion for Painting! PREParation is Key

Dominick Bambace

I was born and raised in Port Chester, NY; a small town just outside of NYC. I graduated from Port Chester Senior high School in 1988. Directly after graduation I enlisted in the Armed Forces as a Seabee builder in the United States Navy. In the nine years I served as a Navy Seabee I learned most of the skills I have used for the past 25 plus years in the painting industry. Including drywall repair, finish trim, and light carpentry. My attention to detail, positive demeanor and can do attitude directly correlates with my time in the military. The motto of the Seabees is “ CAN DO “ and once a Seabee, always a Seabee…. So it is only fitting that the name my company is “Can Do Painting Services & More”.

The difference between a good paint job and a GREAT paint job is the quality in which you prepare the project to be painted. A paint job is only as wonderful as the effort that is put into its preparation. Five key Steps to Prepare a painting project properly: 1. Remove all switch plates and outlet covers. 2. Cover to protect all floors, surfaces, and furniture. 3. Pole Sand all walls, and ceilings where needed to remove any debris. 4. Repair drywall blemishes such as nail pops, stress cracks, and holes. Then sand smooth and spot prime before painting. 5. Caulk and putty all trim where needed.

Now you’re ready to paint! At “Can Do” we always put prep first.

Testimonials My wife and I heard about Can Do Painting through an inspector at our new home. Dominick came highly recommended due to the quality of his work and pricing. We called Can Do a month before we got into our home to schedule his services. Once we met in person we knew that not only was he going to do good work, but he and his staff were good people and that means a lot today. During the project he ran into small issues and a few delays, never once did he stop work to talk about change orders or how this would hold up the job, he just moved forward and got the job done. Final product of his work of painting nearly the entire house was perfect, he has now done work at my parents’ house, quoting at my brothers and is doing another job at our house in December. I know that quality, good people and fair prices don’t usually go together these days, but with Can Do Painting, they do. - Vince Rozell We used Can Do painting for our new home remodel. The owner Dominick was professional and very meticulous. Can Do painting delivered on time and at a very fair price. We would definitely highly recommended him and his company. At-Need vs. Pre-Need Funeral Planning “At-Need” funeral arrangements are made at the time of death, usually by surviving family members or by a trusted friend on behalf of the deceased. Making funeral plans at the time of death are particularly difficult because the time frame is short and emotions are high as survivors are dealing with their grief. Not only is there much planning to do, there are also imminent financial concerns. Payment for funeral services is due at the time of the funeral which can be quite expensive, a considerable hardship for most families.

planning options you can consider ahead of time. • You want your family to have the benefit of a meaningful funeral. A funeral is an important event for a grieving family. Psychologically, it provides a sense of closure and enables the family to begin the healing process. Families benefit emotionally and socially by honoring the lives of their loved ones with a fitting ceremony and by giving them a proper send off. It is difficult to make the

“Pre-Need” plans (also known as “Preplanning”) are the funeral plans that people make for the living. PreNeed funeral plans can be made at any time and offer many advantages. Funeral Homes, cemeteries and other funeral service companies can help you preplan a funeral for yourself, your spouse or a parent. Also, how-to guides, planning worksheets and interactive tools are now readily available. Top 5 Reasons to Preplan Your Funeral If any of the following statements describes you, then you are probably someone who will appreciate the benefits of preplanning your funeral. • You want to ease the burden on your family. If your wishes are unknown when you die, they will be faced with making difficult decisions at a trying time. Will they know if you wish to be buried or cremated? Will they agree on an open or closed casket? Will they agree on how much to spend? Confusion and disagreements are common occurrences when there is no plan to follow. You can avoid this by leaving behind a plan. • You want to assume the financial responsibility for your funeral. Planning ahead enables you to make financial arrangements to cover your funeral costs. Even if you are leaving behind sufficient money, will your survivors be able to access it? Funeral insurance and funeral trusts are sound financial

funeral the best it can be when planning it in a short time. • You want your final wishes to be followed. If you have specific preferences for the disposition of your remains and the nature of your funeral services, you can clearly express them in your funeral plan. You may have a preference for burial or cremation, the epitaph on your headstone, or the music and readings at your funeral. Or you may not want a funeral ceremony. Whatever your wishes, they need

to be set forth in your funeral plan. • You want to be self-reliant and have your affairs in order at the end of your life. Taking care of your funeral arrangements is a thoughtful and caring thing to do for your family. It is comforting to know that you have done all you can do to ease their burden. And you can be assured that they will appreciate that your caring for them continued after you are gone.

Testimonials “Your kindness and professionalism during this very difficult time of our lives will never be forgotten. We could not have asked for anyone more thoughtful and with sincere compassion.” “We cannot tell you how much you helped us through this trying time. Your sincerity and professionalism will remain foremost in our hearts and minds.”

THE ONLY FIVE STAR RESTAURANT ON ROUTE 26

Our neighbors invited us to dinner here yesterday and it was our first experience dining here for all 4 of us. Wow, why did we wait so long to try this hidden gem right in our backyard in Ocean View? All 4 of our different entrees were excellent, as were the variety of sides you get to choose with each meal. Everything was fresh and tasty and the staff were very attentive and helpful in guiding us through our options. We left very satisfied and looking forward to a return! Thank you! - JM

Owner’s Testimonials

Pamela J. Rizzo

Nineteen years ago I had never even heard of the Women’s Journal, and today I can honestly say the Women’s Journal most definitely changed my life. I had always made good money with my different business ventures, but the Women’s Journal has given me the freedom to control my own financial life, and also have the freedom to enjoy my family. I took a concept and gave it my own touch, and with hard work and consistently following the concept that I was trained in I have built an extremely successful paper.

Lynn K. Wolf

With the experience of publishing nine different County Woman publications, I can confidently inform you that this is one of the most exciting, rewarding, and successful business ventures for women entrepreneurs in any part of the nation. I originally born and raised in Minnesota and I have lived on the West Coast and the East Coast and many states in between. Some of my past careers include being a National Insurance Account Executive, Retail Operations Manager, Certified New Jersey Teacher and Teacher of the Year, but of these, I have being a County Woman Publisher to be the most gratifying on many levels. I guarantee that you will meet many incredible business owners and community leaders. Your publication will be the critical component in helping to launch a new business and/or successfully grown an existing business. The personal rewards are endless.
