Horsham goes plastic fantastic Don’t forget that plastic pots, tubs and trays can now go in your blue-top bins! Horsham residents have been enjoying recycling plastic pots, tubs and trays for some months now thanks to a sustainable market for this type of material being established. Since the introduction, recycling of plastic material has increased by almost 20% in West Sussex.
We can now accept things like yoghurt pots, ice cream tubs, fruit and vegetable punnets and plastic meal trays along with your plastic bottles. At the moment we still CANNOT accept plastic toys, plastic bags or film, plant pots or plastic furniture. For more information on your improved recycling service visit: horsham.gov.uk/plastics, email hopoast.depot@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 733144.
Thank you for recycling… Residents in the Horsham district are generally excellent at recycling and have helped to achieve the highest recycling rate in West Sussex. However more needs to be done to help us achieve our national set targets by 2020. Putting items that aren’t recyclable in the blue-top bins can cause problems for the recycling process. For example, did you know that if food waste gets into the recycling lorry it can ruin the entire load?
Also, if plastic bags get through they can clog up the machinery at the recycling facility and cause problems. If recycling loads are too heavily contaminated, the whole of that load can be rejected and sent to landfill. Remember to keep it clean (no food residue), dry (no liquid) and loose (not tied up in plastic bags or stuffed in boxes).

A dementia friendly Horsham district To learn more about becoming a dementia friend contact: dementiafriends.org.uk to find a session nearest to you. A Dementia Friendly Horsham district is one where people will be aware of and understand more about dementia. Where people with dementia and their carers will be consulted and listened to, and will feel included in our community. The Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative from the Alzheimer’s Society to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition. Here in Horsham, the council is encouraging everyone who lives and works in the district to find out more about helping people with dementia by becoming a Dementia Friend. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. Whether
you attend a face-to-face Dementia Friends Information Session or watch an online video, Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling others about Dementia Friends, to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts. Meanwhile, Horsham District Council is working with a local Dementia Governance Group, a partnership of organisations, who will be working with businesses, shopkeepers, public transport operators and schools to raise awareness. If you would like more information on the Dementia Governance Group, call 01403 215072 and speak with Lisa Boydell, Community Development and Engagement Manager at the council or email lisa.boydell@horsham.gov.uk.

Over a thousand families helped by Think Family Think Family is a West Sussex wide programme supporting children and families who have a range of complex issues to face, by providing dedicated keyworkers and an early help approach to resolve issues before they become too advanced.
Beating targets and saving money The service started in early 2013 and by 2015 has helped some 1,165 families get control back of their lives. In addition to helping people, the costs saved as a result
of Think Family’s preventative work over the last three years have proved significant. Horsham District Council supports the programme and is working to help even more people experiencing difficulties. In addition to its original work on antisocial behaviour, school inclusion and employment, Think Family now also focusses on children in need, domestic violence, health issues and early help. For more information contact Rachel Evans on 01403 215638 or email community.development@horsham.gov.uk
A new Job Club for Billingshurst The unemployed in Billingshurst and surrounding areas are now benefitting from a Work Information and Support Club (WISH) as a result of Think Family’s work. WISH, supported by the Community Partnership and Horsham District Council is held every Wednesday at Billingshurst Library. Experts are at hand to help people
with CV writing, applying for jobs and interview techniques. If you are local to Billingshurst and want to know more or to register, call 07500 450458 or email bhurst.community@ btinternet.com

Programme puts Lianne on road to success Lianne Miller at work Since January 2012, when Horsham District Council started the Journey to Work programme with funding from the Department for Work and Pensions, it has been helping the district’s residents find employment, particularly helping young people with little or no work experience. In January 2015, Lianne Miller, an accounting student, approached the council about the Journey to Work programme as she wanted to enhance her skills and experience. Lianne shares her success story: “I started the Journey to Work programme in March 2015, after unsuccessfully trying to find work. I found it difficult as a lot of employers wanted someone with at least a year’s experience. The Journey to Work programme has helped me greatly as before I started the programme I had very little confidence and absolutely no office skills. “Since starting the programme with South East Hearing Care Centre’s head office in Horsham, they have given me the crucial
training and guidance that I needed and the opportunity to use the skills learnt at college in a real working environment. Taking part in this programme with South East Hearing Care Centres has been an extremely positive and beneficial experience. I could not have asked for a kinder group of people to work with. “I am now in paid employment with the same company that gave me work experience and could not be happier.”

She is a remarkable young lady who has opened our eyes to look beyond only trying to recruit those with experience. “Before the eight week work experience period was over, we took Lianne on as part of our team in Horsham and we hope to offer all the support she needs to succeed in her career path. She is now a confident, efficient and much valued member of our team.

Universal Credit - the impact on you Universal Credit is a single monthly payment for people in or out of work, which brings together some of the benefits and tax credits that you might be getting now. Universal Credit will replace Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
Who is affected? If you claim Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance, Working and Child Tax Credits or Housing Benefit you will eventually see your benefit replaced by a single benefit Universal Credit. It is estimated that around
6,000 households in the Horsham district will be affected by the changes. Single claimants (that’s people who are not claiming as a family or as a couple) making new claims will be the first to be offered Universal Credit. But if you go to a job centre where Universal Credit has already been introduced, couples and families will also be offered the new payment. Go to the GOV.UK/Universal Credit website for more information and a summary of who is eligible to claim Universal Credit and how it could affect you.

District’s volunteers eager to adopt their streets Horsham district is one of the most beautiful areas of the country, but nowhere looks good if it is blighted by the unsightly scene of litter. That’s why the council launched a new campaign to encourage residents to “adopt a street” and take extra care of their street or an area they particularly value.
Over 500 willing volunteers came forward to adopt their areas in just four months.
Launched at the end of 2014, the council was inundated with willing volunteers eager to do their bit. In fact, within four months of starting the scheme, over 500 volunteers came forward to help clear the district from litter.
Did you know?
In the region of 14 tonnes of litter and flytips are dumped around the district on public land and streets every month - it’s a costly business for the council to collect this.
Our youngest volunteer to date is five year old Skyla from North Horsham

Volunteer and take up the challenge! Coral Cox from North Horsham first read about the Adopt a Street scheme in the spring edition of Horsham District News and decided to sign up for litter picking with her partner.
Coral tells us her story: “The hedgerows and lay-bys near where we live were littered with rubbish by people just throwing it out of their cars. When we read about Adopt a Street we called the council and they very quickly supplied us with all the tools and safety information we needed so that we could get cracking. “After initially tackling the Old Crawley Road and Wimlands Lane area near to us, we have now noticed that not as much litter is being left and it is instantly looking much better. It’s really rewarding to take action like this and not just sit back and grumble about it. So I would definitely recommend that other residents take up the challenge.” If you are interested in joining the scheme or you would like to get a group of volunteers together then please email Karen Grisley at the council on karen.grisley@horsham.gov.uk for more details.
