Historic Horsham Gingerbread
O
n sale at The Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, Horsham Gingerbread has an historic tale to tell.
A first known letter by local poet Shelley to his aunt asked for Horsham Gingerbread from a Horsham food fair. Many years later at a London book sale, our Museum and Heritage Officer, Jeremy Knight, bought a recipe book owned by the Shelley family which featured Horsham Gingerbread. Together with former owner of the Horsham Cheese Shop Lesley Ward, he set about making a batch of the historic treat (with a few modern tweaks) and has sold it in the Museum ever since. In fact it now sells in over 50 venues throughout the South East.

Cycling for all at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre
SUMMER SUMMER2017 2017| |Our OurDistrict District0505
Inclusive cycling takes off F
ollowing a successful trial by the council last year, All Inclusive Cycling sessions proved so popular that they have now made a return to the district’s sporting calendar and look set to stay. Initially appealing to a younger audience, the sessions have now also extended their appeal to adults. One gentleman who developed Glaucoma recently thought he would never cycle again, but with our specially adapted bikes and knowledgeable and supportive session leaders he is looking forward to getting back in the saddle. The sessions run on Friday evenings on the athletics track at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre from 4.30pm – 6pm and cost £5 per session or £4 for people with a Leisure Access Card or Compass Card, on a pay-as-you-go basis. The Wheels For All instructors offer one to one tuition to allow each trainee to maximise their own riding ability and improve their control skills. We encourage friends and family to join in the sessions and have a large pool of adapted bikes and trikes ready for people to use.
Glad to be back on the cycling track For more information about the inclusive cycling project or to make a donation towards new adapted cycles, please contact Paul Taylor on 01403 215637 or paul.taylor@horsham.gov.uk

Investing in our sporting community I
mproving the district’s sports facilities is at the heart of the council’s commitment to building a leisure offering that will enhance the health and wellbeing of our residents, encouraging them to get active and keep active. In recent months the council has invested heavily in a number of projects which will help more people enjoy more sporting activities.
All change at Bennett’s Field Local footballers have benefitted recently from totally refurbished changing rooms at the Bennett’s Field recreation ground in Horsham. Previously targeted by vandals, the facelift will benefit numerous football teams. Praising the new facilities, Secretary to Horsham Baptists and Ambassadors Football Club said: “Bennett’s Field has been the home ground for our team for some 20 years and we are delighted to benefit from the council’s generous investment.”
HDC’s Senior Assets Manager, John Loxley, Treasurer Horsham Baptists and Ambassadors Club Peter McMahon, HDC Parks and Countryside Officer Anna Chapman, Secretary of Horsham Baptists and Ambassadors Club Andrew Hall, PWA Design’s Peter Williams, GWM Building Ltd’s Mike Manktelow.

Giving kids space to play T
here are no excuses to hear that favourite holiday chant “I’m bored!” as the council provide some 53 different play parks and open spaces throughout our towns and villages to keep local children and young people busy. Opportunities to play outdoors are at the heart of a happy and healthy childhood. Through play, children explore the world around them and develop key life skills. As a local authority we are committed to the district’s children and young people and their right to play – so much so that we are currently reviewing our play strategy.
Free play Key to our play strategy is that play is free of charge, children are free to come and go as they please and they are free to choose what they do whilst they are in our play areas.
Become a sponsor
E
ager to provide a better play experience for local children, Horsham Rotary Club are set to donate a new roundabout for Horsham Park later this summer. Many thanks to them for this addition to our play equipment.
If you would like to sponsor any play equipment for the benefit of our community, please let us know at parks@horsham.gov.uk.

A new community space for New Street
Having your say
O
ur Parks and Countryside team have recently completed a resident’s survey to find out what local people think of our play facilities and what improvements they would like to see in the future.
T
he council, in partnership with Horsham in Bloom and a number of local partners secured funds recently to transform a previously unloved local green space into a community garden as part of the Government Pocket Park initiative, with additional funding from the Tesco Bags for Help grant scheme.
Many thanks to all those of you who responded. The good news is that many of you have noticed significant improvements in the range and quality of play spaces locally in recent times.
New Street Green with its signature purple railings, has now become a magnet for local residents of all ages, providing a back garden for many locals in the area who have no garden of their own.
Here is a summary of actions we are planning to take as a result of your feedback. We are looking to: •
Increase provision of natural play structures, climbing structures and sculptured animals in parks and open spaces, encouraging children to encounter the natural environment.
•
Tell people more about our play facilities and where to find them by creating an interactive mapping system on our website.
•
Provide more challenging play for older children by enhancing Horsham Skate Park and delivering a number of new cycle training parks.
•
Open the newly refurbished New Street Green in Horsham.
•
Ensure new play areas east of Billingshurst are innovative and inspiring.
It is hoped that a community group can be formed in the future to help care for the soft landscaping, fruiting trees and bushes.
All to play for in Billingshurst
O
ur Parks and Countryside officers play a key role in ensuring that new play park developments contain high quality, innovative play spaces.

e r o t s n i n u f For thrill seekers
T
he council’s Sports Development team and partner organisations are gearing up to deliver a bumper programme of supervised summer holiday activities for young people. At the core of what’s available are the three-day sport, art and play camps at Forest School in Horsham, giving children aged 5 to 12 years plenty of opportunity to express themselves and mix with other children, whether their interests are in physical sports or creative activities, or a mixture of the two.
Taking adventure to the next level there’s the Holmbush Farm experience that offers the challenges of 4x4 blindfold driving, archery, tomahawk throwing, air rifle shooting and airsoft - a game similar to paintball.
For the creative Dance workshops and arts and crafts activities are on offer as part of the Forest School Summer Camp programme.
For lovers of the great outdoors
For the sporty
Stanford Scout Camp, Pease Pottage offers a different range of outdoor adventure pursuits including camp fire building and cooking, mountain biking, shelterbuilding, wide games, archery and more. And if all these opportunities for summer fun are not enough, what about a minibus trip to Chessington World of Adventures to enjoy a variety of thrill rides to top it all off?
For those children who want to be more specific in their sporting choice there are lots of options. Archery is always popular and there are 12 different sessions on offer over the summer holiday break. Athletics, football, badminton and cycling are also available. There are also some camps combining sports of a similar type, such as:
For a great day out There’s also a range of excursions and outdoor pursuits to get excited about. Wall climbing, abseiling and archery at Blackland’s Farm, East Grinstead remains an ever popular activity cocktail for 8-15 year olds. And what child doesn’t enjoy a day at Guildford Spectrum ice skating with mates on the centre’s rink and swimming in its multi-featured pool?
• Striking and fielding sports (cricket, stoolball, rounders) • Frisbee games (ultimate frisbee and disc golf) and • American sports (dodgeball, baseball, basketball).
For more detail about the holiday activities and to make bookings please visit www.hdsd.org.uk/Holiday-Activities. It’s easier than ever to book online. How Alan beat diabetes A I
have completely changed my diet and lifestyle. I have cut out sugar and unhealthy fat, and I am no longer addicted to fizzy drinks. I still enjoy a steak pie but it’s about adopting a healthy balance and so I eat a smaller portion of pie with lots of vegetables instead of the whole pie in one go. I wasn’t really a cook and so I relied heavily on processed meals that were full of additives. I have now learnt to cook and I enjoy making healthy meals using lots of vegetables and oily fish. I make delicious smoothies for breakfast using spinach and fruit and they keep me going for much longer than processed food that is full of sugar. The course that Alan attended is free and is open to anyone with a BMI between 25-40, aged 18 years and over, and ready to make sustainable changes.
@HorshamDC
few years ago, 63-year-old Alan Cooke was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, a condition that caused his blood sugar level to become too high. Last August when Alan’s blood sugar had reached dangerous levels and there was a risk that he may need to move from taking tablets to injecting insulin, his GP referred him to Horsham District Council's Wellbeing’s weight management course. Earlier this year, Alan was given the all-clear after shedding an impressive 2½ stone. He was so impressed with the course that he wants to share his journey with others. He said: “The experience I got from the weight management course was out of this world because it cured my diabetes. If telling my story helps just one person, then it will have been worthwhile.” Alan didn’t know what to expect when he joined the programme. Together with 14 other people, he learnt about different food groups, hydration, portion control, shopping and label reading, eating out and entertaining, stress, sleep and relaxation, mindful eating and exercise. Thanks to the programme, Alan changed his eating habits and his lifestyle and he is still maintaining a slimmer figure.

Let’s hear it for
Horsham It’s a great place to visit T
he summer holiday season is nearly upon us – a time when our district receives a fair share of visitors and whether they are sightseers, day-trippers or people visiting families and friends there is plenty on offer to keep them entertained.
Warnham Nature Reserve with its 17 acre millpond also provides a vast haven for wildlife with over 400 species of plants and over 100 species of birds. Families can enjoy bat and bird watching and pond dipping whilst youngsters can enjoy a day learning bushcraft skills.
The council’s own parks and countryside amenities such as Warnham Nature Reserve, Leechpool and Owlbeech Woods, Chesworth Farm and Southwater Country Park are well worth exploration.
Let the kids run loose at our award winning Dinosaur Island Adventure Play Park which is based in Southwater Country Park – it’s sure to get a roar of approval. The unique play park provides inclusive play equipment for all ages and abilities, with its “active” volcano, tar quagmire, dinosaur swamp and prehistoric jungle.

Chesworth Farm - a real delight - provides free access to a 90 acre livestock farm incorporating the River Arun, grassland, wet meadow and numerous meandering footpaths and cycle tracks where you can meet flying owls, clouds of butterflies and the odd cow or three.
With the summer days ahead of us why not take a fresh look at what’s on offer across our district and showcase it to your visitors this holiday?

Cash boost for local tourism T
Topping tourist polls
he council’s Economic Development team recently won a bid to secure £52,000 of European funds to develop a comprehensive Visitor Economic Strategy for Horsham district. The project aims to develop our district’s position as an attractive, vibrant destination for sightseers, day-trippers and staying visitors.
Y
ou don’t have to take our word for it, as Horsham district already tops a number of tourist polls.
We have appointed a specialist tourism development consultancy who will work with key stakeholders, including the South Downs National Park, tourism businesses, parish councils and Community Partnerships in order to develop the Strategy by the end of September 2017. The Strategy will be used to promote the wonderful place that Horsham district is to both new and returning visitors.
Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is among Visit England’s top 20 free visitor attractions in the country. And the world’s largest travel site TripAdvisor lists a string of popular attractions including Warnham Nature Reserve, Horsham Park Leechpool and Owlbeech Woods and Chesworth Farm.
Head of Economic Development at the council, Clare Mangan said:
It is great news that we have secured these funds which will help to maximise the district’s potential as a visitor destination. We look forward to working closely with our partners across the whole district to ensure that Horsham's communities and the local economy benefit as much as possible from all the positive effects of tourism.
Having your say
I
n order to inform the Strategy, a full scale survey was issued recently to local residents, businesses and key partners to find out what they thought was important in improving our district as a popular visitor destination.
Full results of the survey will be available in our next edition but here’s a snapshot of what some of the respondents had to say.
“We need more hotels so that visitors can stay over and enjoy all our area has to offer.” “We’ve got lots to offer but we need to shout about it more!” “We have a great location – halfway to the coast and halfway to London.” @HorshamDC @HorshamDC
“The local food produce is fantastic.”

A day in the life of... ...a Recycling Advisor W
aste and recycling collections are one of the most high profile and highly valued services provided by the council and we are extremely proud to have the highest recycling rate in West Sussex. However, as with all other local authorities, we are under considerable pressure to increase levels of recycling and minimise the volume of household waste sent for disposal. Horsham currently recycles 45% of its waste and we aim to reach the national recycling target of 50% by 2020. As part of this drive we have recruited recycling “doorsteppers”, funded by the West Sussex Waste Partnership, to tour the district and give door to door advice to residents on how
to recycle more of their waste – reducing the amount that goes to landfill and ultimately saving the tax payer money.
Here Nicola talks about her average day as a recycling doorstepper:
Nicola Bolger, our Recycling Advisor Team Leader, heads a team of three doorsteppers who have been canvassing district households since March 2016. So far, the trio have canvassed over 14,000 properties throughout the district, resulting in a significant increase in recycling tonnage already.
I wake up to the sound of my alarm at 7am and catch the train into work from Worthing. I normally do about one hour’s admin before the rest of the team comes in, then we all head off out to speak to residents.
In total, some 1,906 tonnes of rubbish have been diverted away from landfill and into recycling – that’s a saving of some £160,866 in landfill tax. Our contamination rates have also decreased significantly.
Yes, I wear my Horsham District Council identification badge at all times while doorstepping.
How do you start your day?
Do you carry any form of ID?
What do you talk about on your visits?
We aim to promote, educate and motivate residents to recycle as much as possible. By asking a series of questions we are able to identify and resolve any issues with the service. I also provide advice on what can and can’t be recycled to those who are unsure.
What do you hope to achieve from your visit?
Ensuring that the resident is happy and that all their recycling enquires have been answered.
Are people generally receptive to your visits?
Yes, the majority of people are happy to provide feedback on our recycling service.
What do you most like about your job?
Working as a team to help improve the recycling rates and helping residents to realise that they can recycle something that they didn’t know could be recycled before. Nicola advises a local resident about his recycling

Look what we found in our green-top bins for rubbish!
We sneaked a peek in the green-top bins for rubbish* of Horsham residents and we found that more than half the rubbish in the bins could be reused, reduced, recycled or composted. The image below shows how you can achieve this easily and reduce your waste by half! *Taken from waste analysis in 2015
More than 28,000 tonnes of waste is thrown away in Horsham every year including recycling, food and garden waste. As well as disposing of your waste, Horsham District Council is supported by a dedicated team working with our residents to help you to reduce what you throw away and reuse and recycle as much as you can.
@HorshamDC

FLUTTERBY BUTTERFLY: PRINTS BY JULIA WHITE Julia’s work is influenced by Arthur Rackham of Amberley, who captured Sussex scenes through illustrated fairytales in the late 1800s. In keeping with a holistic ethos, Julia uses vegetable based inks as much as possible and experiments with making dyes and powders from the plants and land of the Sussex Downs.

Vandalism idCriminal you know that if you have damage reported an incident of antisocial behaviour three or more times within a six month period and not received a satisfactory response, you can activate the Community Trigger (also known as an Anti-social Behaviour Case Review) through the Safety Community Partnership? Horsham District Council’s Community Safety Manager Greg Charman explains why it is so important to raise awareness of the statutory service designed to give victims the right to demand agencies to deal with persistent anti social behaviour:
Un d e r a g e d r i n ki n g Criminal damage The Community Trigger was set up in 2014 after the landmark case of Fiona Pilkington who killed herself and her disabled daughter in 2007 after years of torment by youths, and after failures of the authorities to adequately respond to her numerous calls to report harassment. People need to know how to activate the Trigger and that’s why it’s important we continue to publicise this important service. The Trigger is designed to ensure that we work together to try to resolve reports of anti-social behaviour. We do this by discussing the problem, sharing information and using our knowledge and resources to reach an agreed outcome.
You can activate the Trigger if:
What can you expect?
• you have reported three separate incidents relating to the same problem in the past six months to the council, police or your landlord (these incidents need to have been reported within seven days of the alleged behaviour); or • you have reported one incident or a hate crime in the last six months and no action has been taken; or • at least five people from different households have made reports about the same problem in the past six months to the council, police or your landlord and no action has been taken.
Once a Community Trigger application has been received the Community Safety Unit will contact the other agencies involved to confirm the details of the reported incidents to verify the threshold has been met. You will then be contacted to confirm that either the Trigger has been met or, if it has not been met, what action will be taken to deal with the issues raised.
@HorshamDC
A review panel, involving the appropriate Community Safety Partnership agencies and other relevant partners, will then carry out a case review. The panel will discuss the anti-social behaviour and the actions taken. The Community Safety Unit will write to you soon after the panel meeting to inform you of their findings and recommendations.
Horsham District Council reports the number of Community Trigger applications on its website.
To activate the Community Trigger, you can complete an online form https://www.horsham. gov.uk/communitysafety/ community-safety/thecommunity-trigger, call us on 01403 215100 or write to: Community Trigger Horsham Anti-Social Behaviour Unit Police Station Hurst Road, Horsham West Sussex, RH12 2DJ

The next Jobs and Skills Fair is planned for September 2017
Matching hundreds of jobs with hundreds of people F
ollowing the success of last year’s Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair, the event will return in September this year, with the promise of hundreds of jobs, apprenticeships and volunteering opportunities for local people. The event, which is in its third year, will once again be held in the Drill Hall in Horsham. The Fair, organised by the council in partnership with The District Post, Horsham Jobcentre Plus and The College of Richard Collyer, will be a great opportunity for those seeking a job, thinking of changing their existing one or considering on-the-job training through an apprenticeship to meet a wide range of local employers eager to recruit and grow their organisations. Once again there will be bitesize workshops designed to help people improve their employability skills and job prospects. Additionally, employers
will have the opportunity to sit down with prospective employees in the café to discuss opportunities. In the previous two years that the event has been staged, 80 employers have offered over 1000 opportunities between them and about a third of these have been filled as a result of the day, with over 1000 local people attending. If you are searching for that perfect career, just looking for a parttime opportunity or wanting an apprenticeship then come along.
For more information visit the council website www.horsham.gov.uk/jobsand-careers/employment-andskills/horsham-district-jobs-andskills-fair or contact Leigh Chambers on 01403 215264 or leigh.chambers@horsham.gov.uk
Apprenticeship Fair comeback For the first time in many years the council also hosted an Apprenticeship Fair earlier this year. Here’s what one student had to say about it:
The event had a relaxed atmosphere with a lot of supportive adults explaining how each apprenticeship scheme worked. There were many useful resources I picked up from the event, which should help me to find an apprenticeship that really does suit me”.

Stay safe when out and about H
orsham District Council is using the latest technology to help people stay safe in their own homes and when they are out and about.
One family’s story
For some years now Horsham district residents have benefitted from a ‘Community Link’ service from the council, which helps those in need be more independent at home. Footprint is just one of a range of options from Horsham District Council’s Community Link service, using technology to help keep people safe and independent in their own homes and when they are out and about.
Now a nifty new piece of kit called Footprint offers a more advanced service for users both inside and outside their home. The new technology includes GPS tracking, two-way voice communication, fall detection and movement/nonmovement sensors – all in a handysized wearable pendant or key fob. Footprint is now being used by lone workers, families and carers, and can also be used to protect vulnerable people such as those living with dementia. With online and mobile access it can be linked to an individual smartphone or connected to the web to allow easy control and monitoring. It is also simple and easy to use, providing security and peace of mind for people of all ages.
Some services do not need a smartphone or web access so can be used by people of all ages and abilities. The most important thing is that you now have peace of mind for yourself or those you love.
To find out how it works and what else is on offer visit www.horsham.gov.uk and search for ‘Community Link’, email community. link@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215230.
Robin lives in the Horsham district with his wife who has always led an active life with lots of friends. She was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year and sadly now has a habit of wandering off and getting lost. As you can imagine this is a terrible worry for her husband who has sometimes needed police help to find her. With the use of the council's Footprint, and a few lessons on how to use his new smartphone, Robin has been able to continue enjoying going on days out with his wife, relaxed in the knowledge that if she does start to wander he can simply text her Footprint and know what direction she has headed off to. His wife meanwhile feels that she can still maintain some sense of independence. Needless to say the footprint has been a total success for them, and we thank them for letting us share their story with others. Emma Bailey the Community Link Manager says “To be able to find a solution to what was becoming an increasingly dangerous and worrying time for this family has been a real joy.”
