Hospiscare Open Gardens 2018

Welcome

Small or large, a wood or a meadow, these gardens are the “treasured outside spaces of their owners and I always feel a sense of gratitude towards their instinct to share. ” Foreword – By Anne Swithinbank Gardeners are a curious breed and we love to visit each other’s plots. Occasionally changing into a cleaner pair of jeans and venturing out brings the chance to meet others, pick up ideas, discover new plants and notice familiar ones used in novel ways. Their plus-one’s can simply immerse themselves in colour, fragrance, birdsong and chatter. Excitement builds at the gate as the layout is revealed. Next is a delightful meander, admiring the layout and use of plants and more often than not, a scrumptious tea, discussions with other visitors, tips from the owners and a sales bench. I always learn something new, whether different ways of using climbing roses, clipping and managing evergreens or better varieties of well-known plants. You might return home Anne Swithinbank inspired to create a theatrical courtyard, wildlife Gardening Writer and Broadcaster sanctuary, water gardens or rearrange your garden into a more contemplative space. Small or large, a wood or a meadow, these gardens are the treasured outside spaces of their owners and I always feel a sense of gratitude towards their instinct to share. A lot of emotion (will people like it?) and hard graft is invested and much appreciated. Above all, visiting the gardens in this booklet helps raise money for this amazing charity, that provides so much help and support for people and their families when they most need it. Anne Swithinbank is a trained horticulturist, freelance gardening broadcaster and writer. She trained at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew Gardens and was Glasshouse Supervisor at the Royal Hortcultural Society’s garden at Wisley, Surrey.
