Welcome
Welcome to Hospiscare’s spring newsletter, Together nurses are trained to work with people who have received a diagnosis of a terminal illness. Our staff and many medical trainees have reason to be grateful to her for sharing her knowledge so openly and enabling us to learn from it.
Dear friends, I am pleased to introduce our first newsletter of 2018. We expect this to be a busy year as we continue to develop and enhance the services we offer to patients and families. As I write this letter, we are seeing unprecedented demand both on our ward and our community services. In some instances this has meant incurring additional costs for temporary staff to ensure our services remain safe and efficient. Megan, one of staff nurses, writes very professionally about her role on page 8. Only at the very end does she mention, almost in passing, that ‘there are lots of difficult moments’ and I think her attitude is typical of our amazing team who go the extra mile for patients and families whilst absorbing significant emotional pressure. I hope that you take the time to read Kirsty’s story and perhaps look at the video she made with us that can be found on our website. Kirsty was a truly inspirational young woman who was determined to use her experience to influence the way in which doctors and 2 | Find us on Facebook
We have some exciting projects coming up in 2018. One of these involves working with the RD&E to offer more support to people with heart failure. This is just one example of where we are widening our reach to open up Hospiscare to more people. Another of our recent initiatives in Day Hospice are our new exercise classes for patients and their carers. Our fundraising challenge remains immense. It is complicated this year by changes to data protection law in May 2018, which will affect all charities. At Hospiscare we have always taken great care to protect our supporters’ details and have never sold data, therefore we will be affected less so than the national charities. However, we will urgently need to seek your express consent to contact you by email in future, and in spring we will be contacting you to update our records. Thank you so much for your continued support of Hospiscare. It is no exaggeration to say that we simply would not exist without your encouragement, volunteering, fundraising, donations and gifts in Wills. I wish you all good things for 2018.

What’s been happening?
Exeter Cathedral was filled to capacity once again for the Light Up a Life service in December. Local people came together to remember their loved ones and take comfort from a service led by the Very Reverend Jonathan Greener, which incorporated carols sung by all and readings read by the Hospiscare patron, trustees, volunteers and clinical staff. The evening included performances by South West Ballet Arts, Kagemusha Taiko Group, and Exe Valley String Quartet.
October gave us another day of perfect walking weather for the Jolly Good Jaunt at the Deer Park Country House Hotel in Honiton, not too hot, not too cold, and blue skies! The new Jolly Good Nature Trail proved a hit with the children as they collected treasure hunt items and learned about bark rubbing and eating grubs. Over ÂŁ10,900 in sponsorship was raised for local patients and their families in East Devon.
Littletown Primary Academy Choir entertained staff and patients at Kings House in December, bringing their own infectious brand of joy to Christmas carols. There was dancing, singing and plenty of smiles all round. 4 | Follow us on Twitter
Round up of last six months
Thanks to the generous efforts of Hospiscare Coffee Morning organisers in September, hundreds of tea and cake lovers enjoyed fun and friendship while raising a stunning £22,312 that will help support patients and their families throughout Exeter, Mid and East Devon.
Hospiscare was thrilled to hold its 35th year anniversary Compassion in End of Life Care Symposium in November. Chris Pointon, lead for the international #hellomynameis campaign, moved the audience with the story of his wife Dr Kate Granger, who started the campaign before she died, and he spoke of the impact of personal relationships and human to human contacts and how they make all the difference to people who are living with, and dying from, a terminal illness.
Over 50 supporters put on their trainers for Hospiscare in the Great West Run in October, including one of our staff nurses, two of our doctors, and Hylda from HR. Everyone who took part did a fantastic job, raising over £12,400 between them – that’s no mean feat! hospiscare.co.uk | 5

Kirsty’s Story “It is difficult to think about your own mortality” Single mum Kirsty List, aged 33, has found Hospiscare an invaluable source of support since her asbestos cancer was identified, yet initially she was reluctant to contact the charity at all… “I was absolutely adamant that I didn’t need any type of care. I certainly didn’t need Hospiscare. In my head it felt very negative, like if I took a step through the door I wouldn’t be able to come back out again. I was scared it would be full of old people, grey and clinical. “The vision I had in my head was very different from the reality. It took two attempts for me to go. The first time I went back out the door straight away. The second time was still scary but completely the opposite of everything I had expected. The lights are bright, the people are not doddery, everyone’s happy and young and vibrant and genuinely pleased to see you. “It has meant so much to have somewhere safe to come and somebody safe to talk to. Everything revolves around my daughter. Aimee is five and a half and she knows absolutely everything about my illness, including that I am dying - at a five year old level. She’s just amazing… she takes everything in her stride. “Hospiscare helped make sure I could travel to have a family Christmas. They’ve also been helpful with legal advice. If anything happens to me, my mum has power of attorney to make sure everything’s safe for Aimee, there is a trust fund for her and my Will is in place. “It is difficult to think about your own mortality but everything’s less scary once you’ve had the conversation for the first time.” Kirsty died on the 14th June 2017, aged 34

Volunteer
“I’ve learned so much about people” - Searle House volunteer Rita Rita Ley, 76 from Exeter, received a Hospiscare volunteer leaflet through her door a year ago. “A couple of my friends and my brother-in-law had been cared for at Searle House and I’d been thinking about volunteering, so I filled in an application form then came to see Bob in the Volunteering Team, and by the Friday I was helping in the Day Hospice. “When patients arrive I serve them refreshments and we have a chat. Then the tables are set up for lunch and we help them with their food, if help is needed. We make sure everyone is comfortable and we fix it for them if they’re not. After lunch everyone rests, then it’s more refreshments and we play a word game, or do another group activity before everyone leaves at 3pm. It’s plenty of fun and I find the whole day very enjoyable. “On Tuesdays I set up and help serve refreshments in the Pop-up Café, and I sometimes help at the Wednesday bereavement tea. I serve hot drinks and am a listening ear for people to talk to. I like to ask how their week has gone and they might talk about the person that’s died, or they might talk about the past and things that happened years ago. “If you’re thinking about volunteering for any part of Hospiscare I’d say, go for it, definitely. I’ve benefitted a lot. It’s a great social time and I’ve learned so much about people.”
There are plenty of opportunities for you to help too. Call the Volunteering Team on 01392 688068 or email volunteering@hospiscare.co.uk – we’d love to hear from you. hospiscare.co.uk | 7

Mornings on the ward Staff Nurse Megan Woodward I enjoy the early shift - it allows me to spend a lot of time with the patients, carrying out their personal care and meeting their families. We begin at 7.30am in the Nurses’ Office for handover from the night shift, and learn about late night admissions, patients who may have had a disturbed sleep, or any other unusual activity. By 8am the patients are mostly awake and we start bringing breakfast and medications to their bedsides. Afterwards, we help them bathe so they can feel fresh for the day ahead. We also change dressings and refill syringe drivers, which deliver medication that needs replenishing every 24 hours. The doctors do their rounds then we nurses organise any changes they make to symptom control and care for each person. Most patients are admitted during the day. If you’re coming to stay with us we’ll meet you at the door, bring you to the ward and make sure you’re comfortably settled in a bed. We explain everything and do our best to relieve any worries you might have about being here. Ask us any questions you have, we’ll always be open and honest with you. MY TOP TIP? Use the call bell by your bed! There is no need to be uncomfortable for a minute longer than necessary, even if it’s just that you want a cup of tea. We’re here to help, so let us help you. We finish at 3.30pm after a handover to the evening shift. I work with a fantastic team of nurses and doctors and we’re all very supportive of each other. There are lots of difficult moments to my job but many more rewards. 8 | Find us on Facebook

How to … Manage Panic and Anxiety with “The Panic Hand” There are times when all of us feel a bit panicky or have intense anxiety. The physical sensations might include: tingling hands, light-headedness, fast or difficult breathing, palpitations, sweating, dry mouth, feeling sick or retching. You might also feel generally out of control or frightened. The Panic Hand has five stages designed to help you regain control. “The Panic Hand” was adapted from an original anonymous source by M.Coultard, Physiotherapist, Dorothy House, Bath, UK.
Step 2. Hold your index finger – sigh out. As you release your breath, relax your shoulders and arms
Step 1. Hold your thumb – as you recognise you’re feeling panicky or anxious
Step 3. Hold your middle finger – inhale slowly
Step 4. Hold your ring finger – exhale slowly Step 5. Touch your little finger, then – Stretch and relax your hands
Or some people find it easiest to just look at each of their fingers in turn as they do the actions – try it out and see what suits you best. Cut out this diagram and keep it in your wallet or purse for reference.

Kings House Wednesday Café
Heart to Heart Hospiscare have teamed up with the RD&E NHS Foundation Trust to provide Heart to Heart, a series of six supportive sessions for people living with heart failure, to help you and your family, or carer, understand more about managing your symptoms and the ups and downs of your condition. The sessions will also help you discuss planning for the future. Meet over a cuppa with specialist nurses and others living with heart failure, and there is an opportunity to have complementary therapy too. To find out more, talk with your Heart Specialist or Hospiscare Nurse.
Following on from the success of the Pop-up café at Searle House, The Honiton Wednesday Café opened its doors on January the 3rd for the first time. Held at Kings House from 10am to 12.30pm every Wednesday, all patients, their family members and carers are welcome to enjoy a nice cuppa and cake with supportive and friendly conversation thrown in for good measure. You don’t have to book, just turn up and enjoy yourself.
Seated Exercise Class It can be hard to get enough exercise if you’re not very mobile, so Nick Paynter, a fitness instructor with cardiac rehabilitation and cancer care experience, is here to help. Seated exercise is a gentle way to keep your energy moving and improve your fitness. Outpatient classes start in February at Searle House and you can call Zilla on 01392 688008 to book your place. hospiscare.co.uk | 13

Shops
Your One Stop Shop in Okehampton Here at the bustling Hospiscare shop in The Arcade, we have a great range of quality clothing, homewares, books, CDs and DVDs, and our children’s clothing and toys are popular too. It’s easy to drop donations to the shop from the loading bay at the front of The Arcade, and the Hospiscare van brings a top-up delivery every Friday. We put the stock out quick as we can, Saturdays are always nice and busy with bargain hunters!
Scoot on down to Cowick Street, Exeter
We have space for more volunteers to help the shop run smoothly, so if you have a spare couple of hours in your week to come and help, call me on 01837 53889, or pop in and say hello - I’d love to meet you. Alison Lee, Shop Manager
The Cowick Street shop has had great success as a mobility aid outlet since autumn. There is an ever-changing variety of walking frames, wheelchairs, riser recliner chairs and other items that can help make life a little easier. We’ve had lovely feedback from satisfied customers thrilled at our range. Come and have a look for yourself! We still stock homewares and other quality goods, but a dedicated mobility section has meant even more funds are raised for Hospiscare patients and their families. Volunteers make this a great place to shop. If you’re looking for something fun to keep you busy for a few hours a week, pop in to the shop at 158 Cowick Street for a chat about volunteering, or call me on 01392 491456. Shop Online
Hi Alex... How does the Hospiscare Shop Online team make the most of my donations? It’s our job to generate the most income from items you generously donate, and we raise over £380,000 a year for Hospiscare’s patients and their families from selling them online. The Shop Online staff and volunteers sort through an enormous amount of books and media to identify everything that’s saleable to put on Amazon. Alongside the vast knowledge available within the team, we also use a scanning and pricing app to make sure nothing gets missed. eBay is the other side of our Shop Online operation and our staff and volunteers all use their own special areas of expertise to research and gauge a likely price for your donated items. One of our supporters donated an ordinarylooking vase in September 2016. It turned out to be an original Clarice Cliff Fantasque and it sold on eBay for £2,300! We also sort a large portion of the book and media stock to sell in Hospiscare’s 21 shops. Likewise, Hospiscare shops will send items

to the Shop Online team that they think will get best value when sold on the internet. We ship worldwide and I love the thought that the dusty old board game or book you donated in Devon may have ended up being shipped to the other side of the world. Working in the Shop Online team directly contributes to the care of terminally ill patients and their families, and that’s a great feeling and motivator for the team. Hospiscare is a very open organisation so we can see exactly what we’re contributing to the bigger picture. Alex Slater – Ecommerce Manager

When Jack Carter, age 76, saw a Men’s Walk leaflet at Citizens’ Advice Exeter where he volunteers, he was keen to sign up. The walk was 7.5 miles with a pint and a pasty to finish, along with Six Nations Rugby on the Double Locks’ big screen. But Jack decided against joining in because he thought no one would sponsor him, and the whole point of the event was to raise money for Hospiscare. Then, on a daily walk recommended by his doctor after a heart attack in 2006, he changed his mind, deciding to do the event in memory of his wife, Jan. Hospiscare Community Nurse Specialist, Janet Mackay, had become Jan’s regular visitor, going to the Carters’ home and supporting them with medical issues and lending a kind ear.
Citizens’ Advice Exeter and had a great response. Before I knew it I’d raised £1,050! “I felt proud to raise so much money for my wonderful wife – it’s a very, very good cause.”
To sign up for the Men’s Walk on 17th March, call 01392 688020 or visit www.menswalkexeter.co.uk
“The back-up was wonderful. Janet was so nice. Jan thought she was wonderful too, although her name caused a lot of confusion in our house - too many ‘Janets’!” So with fond memories of both Janet and Jan, it was easy for Jack to register for the Men’s Walk. “I’d never done any fundraising before. So I jotted down the names of my friends and family and asked each of them ‘Will you please sponsor me?’ Then I asked my colleagues at hospiscare.co.uk | 19
Corporate Update
Business News Support from local businesses is vital in helping us reach our fundraising target of £6.2million each year, so please do get in touch if you think your business might be able to help us in some way. Here are some examples of recent support we have received:
Our Christmas Hamper campaign was well supported by many local businesses, with NPS Group coming up with the best name for theirs. It was based on South West produce and named ‘Swamper’! A number of local businesses, including Samuels Estate Agents and Glen King PR & Marketing, donated money to Hospiscare instead of sending Christmas cards in 2017. Thank you for thinking of our patients and their families! We have received fantastic support from local businesses who chose Hospiscare as their ‘Charity of the Year’ in 2017, including PKF Francis Clark LLP, Ernest Jackson Ltd, Marks & Spencer, Doors & Windows (Exeter) Ltd, Padbrook Park Hotel, Trowers and Hamlins and Thrifty Car & Van Rental.

Stalite Signs have again very kindly donated free-of-charge all the signage for our Men’s Walk, Twilight Walk and Breakfast Run events in 2018. They will also be putting together a team to take part in the Men’s Walk!
We are excited to announce that both Wilkinson Grant and Western Power Distribution have agreed to once again sponsor our Men’s Walk and Twilight Walk events in 2018. Their support means we can publicise these events much more effectively, which increases participant numbers and in turn raises more money for Hospiscare.
Corporate Update
We are delighted that Exeter Brewery has agreed to donate a free pint to every walker at this year’s Men’s Walk!
Robert Williams in Southernhay held a Summer Pimms Party during Wimbledon fortnight to support Hospiscare, and raised a fantastic £504. Scott Rowe solicitors in Axminster supported Hospiscare by holding an amazing raffle at their Christmas drinks reception, which raised £470 in total. Did you know that if you are employed you can donate to Hospiscare via Payroll Giving? This tax efficient way of supporting a charity is available to most businesses, and if you would like to find out more, please ring Richard Cousins on 01392 688057 or email r.cousins@hospiscare.co.uk

Thank you
Enormous THANKS to all of our Community supporters! We are so grateful to everybody who gives up their time, money and energy to run events on our behalf – we haven’t the space to mention you all here but please know you are close to our hearts. Here is just a small selection of ways you have been supporting Hospiscare – thank you to everyone involved!
The fabulous team at Wonderworks allowed us to join them at their Craft Fair in Chagford and run the raffle which raised an amazing £577 for Hospiscare. The children of Silverton Primary School organised charity stalls at the Christmas Fair in aid of Hospiscare. They did all of the organising themselves and let us know that they were supporting Hospiscare themselves too.
Exwick Ark, Little Marvals, Exeter Junior School, Kiddi Caru and Little Dragons celebrated the Christmas term by making some fabulous snowflakes to decorate our Warehouse Store at Marsh Barton over Christmas. Sharon and Steve Smith turned their garden in St Thomas into a magical Christmas land with lights, Christmas figures, hot drinks and snacks for anybody passing, all in aid of Hospiscare. 22 | Find us on Twitter
Darts Farm allowed our Topsham Support Group to run Santa’s grotto this year. Here he is having great fun talking to lots of excited children, and raising vital funds for Hospiscare too.
Thank you The Otter Vale Art Society held a ten day exhibition at The Institute in Ottery St Mary, and raised £235 through the sale of their paintings.
The Exewing Fundraisers and special guest Jerome Blake of Star Wars and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy fame, raised funds in Mackarness Hall, Honiton. They had replica props and, along with raffles and prizes, raised £2,038!
In September Air Cadets of the Civilian Committee of 2443 (Okehampton) Squadron organised a sponsored 5km or 10km walk or run for their staff and members to raise money in memory of Jennifer Bourne, the late wife of the Squadron Padre Simon Bourne and mother of two Cadets, Sgt Caleb Bourne and Sgt Reuben Bourne. They raised an amazing £1,457.
‘Wardrobe of a Woman With Style’ was held at The Institute in Ottery St Mary by Lindsay Norton. Lindsay saw the best way to pay tribute to her much loved mother-inlaw, who made all of her own outfits, was to display her beautiful clothes in a fashion show. The audience then purchased the outfits and this fabulous evening raised £550! Sue McQuire took the plunge in December and shaved her head at the Royal Clarence in Seaton. She has raised £1,050.
The proceeds of 2017’s Branscombe Village Harvest Fair and Wacky Races were donated to Hospiscare - a brilliant £606.78. Many games of Sweet ‘n Flour were played! The e2e learners from Petroc College in Tiverton and their teacher, Angela, ran an auction in December. They delivered an excellent evening of entertainment and have confirmed the final amount raised is over £500. hospiscare.co.uk | 23
Open Gardens
Why do you Open your Garden for Hospiscare, Minna? It’s a great way of helping the charity. Five of us in the street opened our gardens to the public, so it was a fantastic event for the community too. I do love being outside and find gardening therapeutic. It’s a joy to me to be able to share the results with other people - I hope they enjoy it as much as I do! I provided cream teas and had neighbours helping out, meaning even more of the community were involved. Since opening our gardens we have become closer knit, working together on a project tends to do that. What are the visitors like? Everyone was out to have a good time and, as many of them were also from the neighbourhood, they bumped into people they had not seen for a while so it turned into a great social occasion. At one point we were so busy we got behind in gathering up the crockery and a couple of visitors helped out. Any advice for gardeners considering an Open Garden? Go for it! You don’t have to provide a cream tea like we did, visitors will love to come and see your garden anyway, just for the sake of the plants. I found it to be a breeze for raising money as a large amount is donated in a matter of hours - and it’s fun! Community Supporter Minna Egan
