Welcome
Guy power!
Welcome to our spring/ summer newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading how your support is helping local people affected by a terminal illness. We are delighted that our new day hospice is now open in Honiton and the sun shone for our first event of the year, we hope it continues for our summer of events and activities!
300 awesome guys enjoyed a walk in glorious sunshine and raised vital funds when they joined our FUGBY12 men’s walk on the 21st March. Roger Wilkinson, of the main sponsor Wilkinson Grant, gave a stirring speech sending hundreds of walkers on their way from St James Park Football Club, through the player’s tunnel and around the pitch before heading over to Mincinglake Valley Park.

Report from the community
Our 28 community nurses make over
14,000
visits to people at home and over 20,000 phone calls each year. What does this mean to local families? Hospiscare community nurse Hilary Squire is so helpful, say Alice and Ray Pett who are both 91. The couple who have been married for 68 years live at Stoke Canon, near Exeter, and both use Hospiscare services.
“We know there is someone we can ring” “Hilary has helped us in lots of ways,” said Ray. ”She has helped us get carers. She phones up or pops in and finds out if there is anything we need. All the Hospiscare staff are helpful which makes it so much easier. We know there is someone we can ring which is very important to us.” Hilary is one of 28 community 4 | www.hospiscare.co.uk
specialist nurses employed by Hospiscare to enable Hilary, who visits the people to stay Petts at home in their own homes - the majority of our patients are cared for at home. These nurses are highly qualified and experienced nurses who provide a seven-day per week service from 8.30–5pm, plus an overnight advice line across the whole Hospiscare area. Our community nurses provide pain and symptom control, psychological, emotional and spiritual support to patients, carers and families in their own home. They also provide social and bereavement support where necessary. The nurses can spend time to listen and talk with patients and families
The majority of our patients are cared for at home Claire with the Petts at Pine Lodge in Tiverton about their illness, treatment and the future in order to enable and empower them to make informed decisions. Should a patient need support from a day centre or our inpatient unit, our nurses can organise this.
“It’s altered our life” It was Hilary who recommended the Petts attend the day care centre at Pine Lodge, Tiverton. “Hilary suggested we might like to come here. We came the following week and everybody was so friendly and caring that we now come every week. We were stuck in a rut and day care has proved an absolute Godsend. It’s altered our life.” The couple enjoy a hot lunch, haircuts, manicures and both love having a massage.
The Petts are also very grateful to Hospiscare for the care given to their son who died in the Exeter hospice 18 months ago. One of the Tiverton day care nurses who helps look after the Petts is Claire Holman. She is so passionate about her job that she’s taking part in the latest Hospiscare challenge – walking part of the Great Wall of China. See page 10 for details. Claire also works on the Hospiscare Exeter hospice ward so she understands all aspects of the care provided. “I love this job. It’s making a difference to people, they are so dependent on us. I know them personally and build a strong rapport with people. I so look forward to coming to work and making things a little bit easier for them.” 688000 | 5 01392 688020
Thank you
We rely on funds raised locally and can’t do it without you! All the funds raised in the community help local families.
Thank you to Hilary Weatherley and all at Exeter Golf and Country Club for supporting Hospiscare as their Charity of the Year for 2014 and raising a fantastic £4,400. Thank you to Joy Bull and Friends who have worked so hard organising sales in aid of Hospiscare. To date they have raised over £1,000 and are still doing wonderful things for Hospiscare. Thank you to the members of Puddington and Blackdog WI who made a beautiful quilt that they are currently raffling for us. The quilt is lovely and we really appreciate all of the time and effort they have put into making it especially for us. Thank you to Devonshire Homes, who have recently nominated Hospiscare as their Charity of the Year for 2015. They are aiming to raise a total of £10,000 in a number of different ways, including donating £50 from each house sale completion throughout 2015. Thank you to the University of Exeter Campus Services team, who donated a fantastic £5,328 raised from the sale of Abbey Well bottled water in their campus shops to Hospiscare. Thank you to the University of Exeter’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society who are kindly donating the proceeds of this year’s performances of Yeoman of the Guard and HMS Pinafore to Hospiscare. 6 | www.hospiscare.co.uk

Online shopping is taking off! Two years ago, Hospiscare took a step into online retail with the sale of half a dozen books on Amazon. Today we have over 17,000 items for sale online and our range has expanded from just books to CDs, DVDs, computer games and board games, which are snapped up on a weekly basis. By selling items on Amazon and eBay we are reaching a wider international audience and making money on those unique items that seem worthless, but to some eBayers are worth lots! Thanks to our amazing volunteers for helping us grow this area of work and raise more money for our nurses.

REPORT: New in East Devon
The wonderful Kings House Day Hospice, now open A warm welcome greeted patients arriving at the new £1.2m Hospiscare Kings House Day Hospice in Honiton. The sun shone brightly into the south facing King Street building as Hospiscare staff and volunteers welcomed patients with hugs and big smiles. Patients spent the morning chatting and looking around the centre before enjoying a hot meal cooked on the premises. Some patients also enjoyed complementary therapy treatments.
“Superb, brilliant and cosy” Patients described the new building as “superb, brilliant and cosy.” The highlight of the day was a delicious lunch. 8 | www.hospiscare.co.uk
Roy Sims, 50, from Seaton, said: “This new day hospice has got everything you could wish for and more. Everything has been done thoughtfully and is top quality. It’s superb and is an absolute credit to Hospiscare and a brilliant resource for the community.” There are regular day care centre sessions, and local Hospiscare community nurses, previously based at the town’s hospital, now enjoy a spacious new office. Hospiscare announced the £1.2m project in 2012 and received a grant of £510,000 from NHS England as well as generous pledges from its sister charities: Budleigh Salterton,
Exmouth and Lympstone, and Sidmouth Hospiscare. The East Devon Appeal to pay towards equipping and furnishing the building has reached well over the £250k target.
“Coming here has made such a big difference” Cathy Jenkins, from Seaton said: “We have settled in nicely and it’s like being part of another family. I was not sure how I would feel when I first came here, but it feels so calm as you walk in and I felt so welcomed. Coming here every Thursday has made such a big difference to my week. I really look forward to coming here.”

Hospiscare helped nine-year-old Katie Cowell from Exeter create a very special birthday for her terminally ill dad. She spent the morning working with a professional chocolatier to create a super chocolatey cake, complete with sparklers, and after taking the morning off school was desperate to rush back to tell friends about her exciting time.
“I just wanted to make something special for my dad.” “I just wanted to make something special for my dad. I know how much he loves chocolate. I had a wonderful day and my dad loved the cake. Thank you to everyone who made this possible,” said Katie.
happy birthday
Katie and her dad Chris are big Jamie Oliver fans and Hospiscare arranged for the celebrity chef to send a signed copy of his latest book. Hospiscare volunteer Jessica Macan made the chocolate cake to Jamie’s recipe, which Katie then decorated with help from Katie Jones of Choccie Bar in Exeter. Hospiscare also arranged a treat for Katie’s 10th birthday – a free portrait session with top national photographer Richard Lappas. Mum Clair is so impressed with the way Hospiscare is looking after her family she is organising a group of girlfriends to take part in the Hospiscare Hawaiian themed Twilight Walk in July. She’s already ordered her grass skirt and garland!
