Hospiscare Open Gardens 2017

Welcome ‘The love of gardening is a seed that once sown never dies’

Gertrude Jekyll

Perhaps not quite what I was thinking as I undertook the first gardening task I can remember doing as a young child; helping my Dad painstakingly dig miles of bindweed root from the vegetable patch, which consisted of heavy, sticky, Devon red clay soil that I could have quite easily thrown a pot from. Thankfully, I now have many more interesting jobs to do in the lovely gardens I work in, but maybe those early years did spark something in me, as I certainly believe Gertrude’s words now. So, a few decades on and I’m now a passionate gardener, self-confessed plant nerd, lover of gardens and of course, I love visiting them. Whilst the Chelsea Flower Show has its own appeal, to me, nothing beats visiting real Katie Vanstone gardens. Real gardens to explore and enjoy, - Thorverton Gardener gardens with real weather conditions, real problems to overcome, and real owners to chat to, exchange ideas with, and gain knowledge from. Real gardens we can identify with, which are a great source of inspiration (and sometimes comfort that we all occasionally have a weed or two!). I’m looking forward to opening my own garden as part of the Thorverton group this year, and hope that you will visit as many of the wonderful, varied and interesting gardens in this 2017 booklet as you can. A lovely afternoon out for all ages, so please take your relatives and friends, go and enjoy the gardens, relax, get inspired, support the hardworking gardeners, and most importantly help raise funds for the fantastic local charity that is Hospiscare.
