We are always trying to find new ways of saying tha by posting photos of your achievements on our Face you’re wonderful! ‘A big thank you to Brian and his lovely dog Harvey. 3 years ago, they approached a local supermarket and asked to take on flowers which would otherwise go to waste. Twice a week, Brian and Harvey bring the flowers to the Exeter hospice, where they’re bought for a donation by staff, volunteers and patients. In just 3 years, Brian’s brilliant idea has raised £16,000!’

Survivors climb for Hospiscare Could you challenge yourself to climb 3,500 metres up a mountain in freezing conditions? How about doing it with two artificial legs after successfully fighting bowel cancer? Survivors climb for Hospiscare the climb to go ahead regardless of whether he can go or not. The team are aiming to climb two or three peaks of around 3,500 metres in the French Alps. They will face a range of hair-raising challenges including huge rock falls, crevasses, extreme winds, avalanches and altitude sickness.
Norman has proved that he is not one to give up easily - he once survived a night out in the open at 7,800 metres, without a tent or sleeping bag. To keep warm, he removed his prosthetic legs and slid inside his lightweight rucksack for shelter! The Survivors team will be braving the elements and enduring physical and mental challenges to raise money for Hospiscare. The climb will be a celebration of survival, whilst remembering those who are still living with terminal illnesses. Find updates about the climb throughout July at: www.normancroucher.co.uk

Site cleared for new Day Hospice
Time for another update on our East Devon Day Hospice Appeal and there are lots of things going on. The biggest news is that the demolition at our site in Honiton has finally begun. The full demolition of the house has now started and it has marked a real step change in our need to fundraise. We have now raised more than £45,000 and this has been boosted significantly by a donation from the Santander Foundation. Amy Tucker is a cashier in the Honiton branch and it was her nomination that led
Hospiscare’s Sarah with Amy Tucker from Santander
Work begins on the demolition of the old house
to this donation – Thank you Amy! Whilst talking about the generosity of local businesses, I must tell you about our demolition team. Six local businesses are involved – K J Thulborn Ltd, Apex Scaffolding Ltd, Olds Demolition, EDS Ltd, Aggregate Industries and coordinating the whole thing, BT Jenkins. They have pulled together and donated their services for FREE, saving Hospiscare a massive £60,000 – thank you just isn’t enough, we are so grateful.
Site cleared for new Day Hospice After the site is all clear our builders D R Jones will be straight on site to start the building. Not only are they building the new day hospice they are also fundraising for it – what a team! We still need to raise just over £200,000 to complete the build and run the day hospice. If you can help with our fundraising or have a business that would like to support Hospiscare please do get in touch!

A man’s best friend A four-legged, furry friend has been bringing the feelgood factor to Hospiscare patients by providing pet therapy at our Exeter hospice. Chihuahua cross pug Daisy became a firm favourite with patients after first visiting the hospice with owner and Hospiscare receptionist Cathy Inglis in October 2013. After showing off her charm and natural aptitude for schmoozing, Daisy became a regular at the hospice working under the title of ‘lead therapist‘ each week.
Chris Sprague with Daisy the ‘Chug’
Cathy said: “I didn’t expect her to be so good with everyone - people get really upset with me if Daisy doesn’t come in.” Daisy became firm friends with Hospiscare patient Chris Sprague (pictured) and could often be found sleeping on his lap. Hospiscare hairdresser Lesley Weeks who supervises Daisy’s hospice visits said: “Daisy seems to know what she’s doing; she knows that she’s coming in to see the patients and she adjusts her behaviour for each of them. She tends to do that naturally - she is amazing.” “I certainly can see the benefits of Daisy’s visits to day care. We call her our ‘Lead’ Therapist and she’s even got her own photograph up on the staff board! Pet therapy can be quite relaxing; you can see people come in looking quite low but they see Daisy and brighten up immediately.” * Sadly, Chris passed away just before this issue went to print. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Chris’ family for allowing us to use his photo.

The benefit of relaxation Complementary therapies can be extremely beneficial as they help to relieve stress and tension, aid relaxation and promote a sense of wellbeing. Complementary therapist Sally Sweet began working for Hospiscare in December 2013, having already volunteered for a year. 49-year-old Sally works at the Exeter hospice, as well as visiting people across east Devon to bring aromatherapy, reflexology, Indian head massage, Reiki and relaxation techniques to patients and carers. Sally said: “We shouldn’t underestimate the benefits a feeling of being pampered offers especially to carers who are often ‘We shouldn’t underestimate the benefits a feeling of being pampered offers especially to carers who are often stressed and tired after looking after a loved one.’

stressed and tired after looking after a loved one. “Increased relaxation can help patients with symptoms such as fatigue, pain, nausea and insomnia. Additionally we teach people relaxation techniques to combat things like breathlessness, anxiety and panic attacks.” 30 people across Exeter, mid and east Devon currently volunteer their time to provide Hospiscare’s complementary therapies.
The benefit of relaxation With many professional benefits to be gained from volunteering, Sally said that Hospiscare is looking for more people to help provide this important service. She said: “Some of our volunteer therapists help us by visiting patients and carers at home. This helps our paid therapists cover our wide geographical area, while volunteers gain experience of working with this
vulnerable patient group in a safe and structured way. Volunteering as a complementary therapist at Hospiscare can provide any qualified therapist with unique experience and an insight into working with terminally ill patients and their families. If you are a qualified therapist and would like to know more about getting involved, please contact us today.
