Gardens to visit in 2014
CELEBRATING
Photos taken at Hospiscare, Exeter
Welcome! - Mark Diacono I love being out in my own garden with the peace and solitude, but I suspect I’m not alone when it comes to being nosy about other peoples. So I am thankful to have Hospiscare’s Open Gardens booklet to turn to. Whether its small or grand spaces you want to visit, there are open gardens to suit. They are the perfect places to pick up ideas that can reinvigorate your garden. It provides a chance to pick the brains of the garden owners and other visitors - I’ve seen fruit trained in obscure and original ways that has given me ideas for my own garden. As well as ideas, you’ll discover plants that are new to you. So please, do yourself and your garden a favour and go and be nosy, safe in the knowledge that you’re also raising money for as worthwhile a cause as there is. An award winning writer and photographer, Mark runs the pioneering Otter Farm, home to orchards of pecans, quince, almonds, szechuan pepper, apricots, a forest garden, a vineyard and a perennial garden. His refreshing approach to growing and cooking has done much to inspire a new generation of gardeners. His book, A Taste of the Unexpected, won the Guild of Food Writers Food Book of the Year 2011. Mark’s Fruit: River Cottage Handbook No. 9 was published in 2011 and Veg Patch: River Cottage Handbook No. 4 won Best Practical Garden Book at the Garden Media Awards in 2009. Mark also won Book Photographer of the Year for both books as well as Garden Journalist of the Year at the Garden Media Awards 2011. Mark led the Garden Team at River Cottage and appeared in the TV series. Mark writes fortnightly for the Daily Telegraph and occasionally for the Observer, National Geographic and The English Garden amongst others.

Why I take part in Hospiscare’s Open Gardens Sharon Rehbock - Budleigh Salterton
We have always visited lovely gardens which have opened to raise money; it gives a rare glimpse of other people’s ideas and always has something to inspire. When my sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer we spent lots of time together and one of the joys of an easy day out was visiting gardens; having a lovely afternoon tea and relaxing. She was cared for in the Exeter Hospice for a short while when she visited us from Yorkshire. Lesley Crutchley, Sharon Rehbock & The whole experience was uplifting and gave her Sophia Rehbock in the Garden renewed energy and confidence. We had talked about opening our garden to raise funds for Hospiscare and planned the event together; sadly she died before she could take part in it. However we were inspired to carry on. We asked our neighbours in Budleigh Salterton to join us in opening their gardens. The first year we managed to get 10 gardeners to join in and we raised a staggering £5000 over the weekend from entrance fees, plant, book and cake sales. After the success and fun we had we thought we would carry on fundraising and we now have a group of 16 gardens for this year’s programme! What makes Hospiscare’s Open Gardens so special is that anyone can participate; there is no pressure to have the perfect garden, just a requirement to love your garden and be happy to share it for a short time with others. We have thoroughly enjoyed opening the garden and have loved meeting lots of new people. Open Gardens could not be for a better cause, the Hospice is so welcoming, calm, efficient and caring. When we were all in need of extra help the staff were so thoughtful and looked after my sister in a way which recognised the extra care she needed and ensured she was treated as an individual. The care was so much more specific and helpful than the general care we had experienced - it gave us all the support we needed, at the time we needed it most. For us it allowed us to understand how we could help and assist her. I I hope that lots of gardeners join in and lots of people come to visit the various gardens, it really is great fun!

Hospiscare has launched an appeal to raise ÂŁ250k to complete, equip and run a new Day Hospice in Honiton for our patients and their families living in East Devon. There is a need for such a facility in this area as some patients have to travel considerable distances to access day care support. Our new Day Hospice will offer complementary therapies to patients and families, an assisted bathroom for those no longer able to bathe at home, nutritious meals cooked by our catering team on site and a beautiful garden for a moment of peace. The centre will be multi-functional providing an efficient base for our nurses and rooms that can be used by volunteers for meetings and for hosting educational sessions. As a local charity we rely on the generosity and support of local people and businesses to raise the 4.1 million pounds that we need each year to continue providing our services. If you would like to know how you can help Hospiscare bring care closer to the people of East Devon please call Sarah Smith on 01392 688095, follow on Twitter @sarahhospiscare or email s.smith@hospiscare.co.uk.
