Garden glory

Our Open Garden programme is in full swing and despite the weather, raised over £20,000!

It’s been wonderful to have so many new gardens opening in our 30th Anniversary year with one new group in Lympstone raising a staggering £1,700. A really big thank you to all our supporters for visiting the gardens and to the owners for all their hard work in making their gardens so stunning. There are still gardens to visit through to September, for a booklet please call 01392 688063.

There when you need us When you are caring for someone at home who is terminally ill there are times when it feels like you are all alone. That’s why five years ago Hospiscare launched an out-of-hours service to offer relatives peace of mind. Liz Gibbons, Hospiscare’s Director of Nursing, oversees the service which runs between 5.30pm and 8am. She explained how it offers expertise, knowledge and experience adding value to what others are providing such as doctors and community nurses.

“We are there for patients or relatives who find themselves on their own overnight with no one to turn to for help Our nurses are there around the clock and advice.” Liz said that research Hospiscare had commissioned revealed that even those who do not use the advice line are comforted by knowing it is there. The number of calls the service receives varies between 30 and 40 per month. Liz explained ”the key for the caller is that the person they are speaking to understands what they are going through.”

It is vital that everyone has an up to date will as Ted Foulkes from Tozers explains “Making a will is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your family.” To date this year’s Will Week has raised over £6,000 with more donations

coming in. We want to say a huge thank you to the 31 solicitor offices who commit to supporting Hospiscare each year, raising money to support local families. A lifetime’s devotion After years of both working and volunteering for Hospiscare, Rex and Diana Davies then found themselves the recipients of care at the hospice when Rex was diagnosed with heart failure. At the time he was living a full and active life enjoying holidays, playing bowls and singing but, shortly after turning 80, he had a heart attack. Rex was unable to walk for any distance which, for someone who was previously so active, came as a major blow.

“We were still in love right to the end”

When one of Hospiscare’s visiting nurses suggested he should use one of the charity’s three day centres, both Rex and Diana were delighted. “To come back and see his friends, even though he was now there as a patient, meant he did enjoy the time he spent there a great deal. He couldn’t wait for Wednesdays to come - he said that he felt he was treated like royalty.” Diana says that experiencing Hospiscare from the patients’ side gave her a real insight into the importance of the work the staff and volunteers do. “When you are having things done for you, it does make you realise how important it is to give that support and help to people like Rex when they are in that situation. I can’t tell you how much we both appreciated all the care and support we were given,” she says. Rex died in April at the age of 88, and Diana, 71, now attends the drop-in centre at the hospice on Wednesdays, as well as a bereavement group once a month and says she both enjoys and values the chance to talk to people who are in the same situation. Theirs was a love story until the end: they met in Boots, where they both worked, before she became a community nurse and spent some time working for Hospiscare. Rex manned

“I can’t tell you how much we both appreciated all the care and support we were given” the reception desk before the hospice opened and then went on to volunteer in the day centre. “He died on our 51st wedding anniversary,” Diana says with a smile. “When we were told the week before that they didn’t think he would last very long, I knew that he would stay with me until our wedding anniversary. He was always a very determined man.”

“Not only is it a very special place to work, it is also a very special place to be a patient”

“I said to my grandson that it was so sad that he died on that day, but he told me he thought it was so romantic that my husband had wanted to spend that last special day with me. I now think it might also be a happy day, because he died on that day with me and we were still in love right to the end.” Diana wanted to share her story to make people aware that Hospiscare helps families dealing with all types of terminal illness, not just cancer. “I know from personal experience that not only is it a very special place to work, it is also a very special place to be a patient,” she says. “Rex and I were so fortunate to be able to both give and receive care at Hospiscare.”

Celebrating our past, present and future In 30 years Hospiscare has cared for over 20,000 patients and their families. Twenty thousand! In 1982 the small group that launched Hospiscare were amazed by the passion showed by local people and that feeling has continued to the present day. This year we will be caring for 2,000 local families and need your support as much as ever.

“We were overwhelmed by the expression of public support” ‘It was extraordinary,’ recalls Dr Searle, the founder of Hospiscare as he remembers the launch of Hospiscare in Exeter Guildhall in 1982. ‘We were overwhelmed by the expression of public support.’ At this time, the prospect of a hospice building was still to be realised, and Hospiscare’s service began with just one nurse. Over 30 years Hospiscare has added more nurses, joined by doctors, consultants, therapists and hospice buildings to practice in, although the core of our work is still with patients in their own homes. All of our many services are supported by nearly 1000 volunteers. 6 | www.hospiscare.co.uk

Hospiscare’s founder John Searle reunited with our first nurse 30 year later

Hospiscare are supporting about 700 patients right now. We still need your help, because there are families that still need our care.

Hospiscare’s timeline

1982 - launch A successful public appeal for £350k provided a community nursing service, caring for about 45 patients a year. The 1980s - growth We expanded our services to mid and east Devon, with more community nurses. 1989 - appeal for hospice launched Hospiscare made a public appeal for £1.6m to build a doctor-led hospice. 1992 - the opening of the hospice In 1992, the Duchess of Kent opened our 12-bed ward and the Exeter day centre. Our first doctors and consultants were appointed. 1995 - Hospiscare at the RD&E Hospital Hospiscare appointed a specialist nurse to work at the RD&E Hospital to visit patients and provide education. Today, there is a team of three. 2006 - 2008 expansion of the hospice In 2006, a generous legacy allowed the opening of rooms where families can stay, and the ward was refurbished. In 2008 with a grant from the Department of Health our Exeter day centre was expanded, we formed a dedicated education team and updated our catering facilities. 2011 - A royal year Every Hospiscare volunteer received the Queens Award for Volunteering Services for their work throughout three decades. After a successful appeal and grant, our Tiverton day hospice was opened by Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex on 17th October 2011.

Hospiscare celebrated 30 years of caring in Devon with a service at Exeter Cathedral in June, attended by members of staff, patients, families and supporters. The service, which reflected on the origins of the charity, its current work and its aspirations for the future, was led by David Walford, chaplain at Hospiscare.

Our work providing care and support for those who are terminally ill, was brought movingly to life through a filmed presentation, which featured many photographs along with words and reflections from people connected with the hospice, from patients to doctors to volunteers. Glynis Atherton, chief executive said “It was a memorable occasion; solemn, joyous, poignant and hopeful. A huge thank you to everybody.” 01392 688000 | 7

Christmas can be a difficult time for many. This year we invite you to remember with the Hospiscare Tree of Light. The idea behind the Tree is simple. Each light on the Tree is lit in memory of a loved one. Anyone wishing to make a donation or dedication can have their loved one remembered in the Book of Memories. The Tree of Light will be outside Exeter Cathedral while the 2012 Book of Memories can be viewed inside or at one of the special remembrance services held locally. • Find a dedication form in our shops from November • We can send you a form call 01392 688020 • Or you can make a dedication online, visit www.hospiscare.co.uk

Remembering with online Tribute Pages How do they work? Q What is an online Tribute Page? It is a single space online where you can remember someone special and fundraise in their memory for Hospiscare.

Q How can I create a web-based

fund in memory of someone? It is really easy, no training is required! Simply go to justgiving.com/remember/ hospiscare and follow the instructions to set up a new page. You can then start sharing your page with family and friends and get them fundraising in memory too.

Q How does it work?

You can add pictures, quotes, stories and memories of the person you’re paying tribute to, and invite your friends and family to do the same. Donations can be made on the page by credit or debit card and the page links the donations for you.

Q Will Hospiscare receive the

donations? Yes, all donations to your Tribute Page are sent to us, as well as the Gift Aid. Each page shows the total amount raised as well as individual donations and any comments left by those donating.

An online tribute page is an easy way for family and friends from across the country - or even from around the globe - to get together, remember and give in memory. Go to justgiving.com/remember/ hospiscare to get started.

Q Do I have to have an online tribute?

No, Hospiscare can set up a manual Tribute fund in memory of your loved one that donations can be paid into by you and others, and we would contact you by post.

If you need any help, ideas or inspiration just contact our fundraising team on 01392 688020 or fundraising@hospiscare.co.uk who will be happy to assist. 01392 688000 | 11
