MOTOR MOUTH

WE THE TWO-WHEELED PEOPLE

I

t seems as a society we have been torn apart as of late. I feel the current situation we live in can’t really be blamed on just one thing. It has been a chain of dominoes that have been falling for quite some time in America. With so much hate and dissention, the fractionizing of this country has finally reached a fever pitch. I am no economist, preacher, politician, or hippie, but I recognize the summer of love is long gone. The negativity and hostility spewed over the airwaves and on the streets seem

the hell are we showing our children and the rest of the world with our current actions? Trust me, I am the first one to enter a war of words, but once my opinions are spilt and my point is made, I am done. Then whomever I’m speaking with and I can get back to riding, talking about motorcycles, or pounding a few cold ones. While thinking about all of this, it became clear to me that we bikers for the most part understand true liberty much more than most people who live in the USA.

Yes, most of the masses gaze at our wild cycles and the way we look, and they think to themselves that we are below them. But we all know by personally meeting fellow riders on our motorcycle tarmac journeys that as a whole we bikers have the largest cross section of real redblooded Americans than anyone could ever imagine. The ranks of blue- and white-collar workers of all colors, creeds, and religions from all backgrounds and walks of life who ride the highways and byways of this great country is majorly

“BEING ON TWO WHEELS, WE UNDERSTAND EARLY ON HOW TO COEXIST WITH PEOPLE AND MACHINES THAT AREN’T LIKE US AND IN ALL ACTUALITY GENERALLY DISLIKE US.”

to be the only things that have been growing in our society for the past decade or so. And so here we are in the now. Many folks need to understand that being able to disagree with each other and with our government is what makes this country the best in the world. But it is not a license to be hateful and aggressive to the point of violence against fellow Americans— or humans, for that matter. Sure, I grew up a punk-rock kid with a body full of tattoos and a middle finger held high toward authority, and that is still the core of my being. But what

8 / HOTBIKE.COM

By being on two wheels, we understand early on how to coexist with people and machines that aren’t like us and in all actuality generally dislike us. And I can also truthfully say if we riders didn’t live in a state of compromise on the road, we would all end up 6 feet under sooner than later. These are our core values and why we are leading this country by example just by being ourselves while riding down the road. And you thought you were just on your bike singing to yourself while doing your own thing, huh?

astounding. This lifestyle we live truly is the ultimate melting pot. And the fact that we are all united by the commonality of loving to ride our custom American-made Vtwin-powered motorcycles trumps anything else. And that rises above all other things that define us as bikers. Ride proud knowing that we are all leading this country to better times by example. HB JEFF G. HOLT EDITOR IN CHIEF

EDITORÕS NOTE

THE

LIFE CYCLE OF EVENTS I

constantly talk about how our job at Hot Bike is to find the next big thing in the V-twin world. It’s a never-ending task to stay ahead of the curve and find new stuff to report about while knowing when it’s time to devote attention away from stuff that has or is about to jump the shark. Ideas for new events usually originate over a few beers among friends, where an idea comes out to throw the world’s most killer show that will be different, bigger, and better than any of its kind. After all, with a buzz you are sure to know the scene better than anyone and have lots of friends who want something new. That kicks off the cycle, and after that most events follow a typical lifespan that last a little more or a little less than a decade. The first year of any new event is almost always a mess and tons of mistakes are made, as the learning curve is steep. Often the most basic necessities are overlooked because throwing an event is a lot of little details. The second year usually gains ground and momentum with lessons learned from past mistakes, and overall the event becomes more refined and a lot of fun. Years three through six are the golden years, as the word spreads and the majority of the crowd and overall core value of the event is still pure. Media coverage is certain and people start to come from around the world. Bragging rights start to emerge for attendees who haven’t missed a show in X amount of years. If an event makes it to year six or seven, it’s probably become profitable at this point. But this always comes at a cost with compromises in order to

10 / HOTBIKE.COM

IT’S A LOT EASIER TO PAY AN ENTRANCE FEE AND MAKE COMPLAINTS THAN TO CHARGE AN ENTRANCE FEE AND MAKE A MEMORY FOR SOMEONE. attract the big sponsors. This inevitably pisses off the participants who have been from year one through three. All of a sudden, the one event everyone looked forward to is “not cool” or a “sellout” or “played out.” Competition for an event starts to emerge around year five when the illusion of an easy buck is possible if they can duplicate or have their own version. Eventually these other similar events, whether good or bad, pull people from the original event year after year as they reset their cycle back to the zero. Year seven or eight of any event has to be the roughest. Cost and expectations are typically at an all-time high, criticism is at full swing, and the core, and even some of the scenesters, are replaced by the general public. While this sounds like a good thing, it can also be the sign that Fonzie is on the beach. By year nine, most events are struggling to make money, keep their core, and possibly losing sight of their original reasons for throwing it. Often the original team is split or gone and replaced by outsiders who focus mainly on making money. Then, a funny thing happens at year 10. People start to remember how great year one through four were. They become nostalgic for that good time and might wander back to see if it was what they remember. Upon their return, if the scenesters and general public are the ones dominating the show, it will probably never make year 11. If the core values of why the event was ever thrown in the first place are still solid and present, there is a good chance of long-term survival. Years 11 and on are a roller coaster

of ups and downs. But by now, most of the kinks have been worked out, and it’s just a matter of keeping the quality up and current, whether it’s the bikes, cars, artist, or bands. If you can make it long enough, the event becomes something you go to every year. It’s just what you do. The core audience now uses this event to see old friends they might not see but at this event once a year. This is the goal for all events. If anyone thinks throwing any event is easy, I encourage them to just try and do one on their own. Showing up and complaining about every little thing is very easy to do. Dealing with a neverending series of problems that all need immediate attention is not. I think what makes an event a longterm success is to stick with those core values of what got them to start the event in the first place. I always read that if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life. I can tell you from experience that’s bullshit, and when you do what you love for a living it’s still a job if you want to pay your bills. Like any job, you need to work hard in order to make money. Working hard means making comprises and doing anything long term takes sacrifices while others only see the rewards. If you lose sight of why you got into it, it’ll become a job just like any other really quick. It’s a lot easier to pay an entrance fee and make complaints than to charge an entrance fee and make a memory for someone. HB JOHN ZAMORA EDITOR

TOOL TIME

WORDS AND PHOTOS: JEFF G. HOLT

TOOLS EVERY WRENCH-SLINGING RIDER SHOULD HAVE IN THEIR GARAGE TOOL STORAGE

BATTERY CHARGER

No matter how many tools you have or what kind they are, keeping them clean and organized is key. We opted for the US General 44-inch 13-drawer roller cabinet ($379) due to its great price, ball-bearing slides, and 16-inch deep drawers. harborfreight.com

Everyone knows that for a bike to run it needs to keep its battery charged. We really like the Optima Digital 400 charger ($110) due to its built-in battery health mode that aids in the recovery of discharged batteries.

BIKE LIFT We have been using the Black Widow 1,000-pound lift ($649) from Discount Ramps. It has all of the features of lifts costing double the price, and it comes in black.

AIR COMPRESSOR

BIG HAMMER

If you are going to air up those tires, get any sort of big nut or bolt unstuck, or even blow-dry your bike, you are going to need an air compressor. We chose the model 1641 Craftsman 26-gallon 1.5-hp compressor ($269) for its features and price, and it came complete with a Craftsman impact wrench and ratchet for free!

No matter who you are and what you ride, there is going to come a time when you need a big hammer. We like swinging the Proto Tools Anti-vibe Ball Pein Hammer ($69.99) due to its hefty weight and molded rubber grip.

uffalo soldier. Dreadlock Rasta. For starters, the Walker Jacket by RSD has buffalo leather in a matte finish that makes up the main sections. The real buffalo leather has a softer and subtler feel, though it did take a week or two of constant wearing to get the feel just right. The pre-curved sleeves and relaxed collar helped to soften the blow during break-in and were a nice feature once it was. What we liked most about the Walker was the simplistic, noBS design with minimal zippers and pockets to distract from what a jacket is supposed to be. That is until you open the coat and the bling-blam-bing of the gold liner lets you know you’re wearing something special. It does have provisions to add armor, but— let’s be honest—that’s the first thing we take out anytime we get a new jacket. Overall, this is a clean, simple, and comfortable jacket that looks great on just about anything you ride. $400 // rolandsands.com

JAPAN’S CUSTOM WORKS ZON STREET 750

18 / HOTBIKE.COM

WORDS: JOHN ZAMORA PHOTOS: MICHAEL LICHTER

ike builders from Japan produce some of the most exotic customs on a more consistent basis than any other country in the world. That could be attributed to a number of factors. For example, they don’t seem to be susceptible to the same set of cool-guy standards as in the US or any imaginary instruction manual on how to properly build a bike. Or perhaps it’s just the rules get lost in translation somewhere along the way. In any case, it’s always exciting to see what is possible when the mind and creativity are allowed to run unencumbered.

MAY 2017 / 19

FOREFRONT | 2015 STREET 750

This bike from Custom Works Zon (CWZ) from Shiga, Japan, is the perfect example of one of those customs that can’t be pinned down to any specific genre or particular style. For starters, the bike is based off a 2015 Harley-Davidson Street 750. While the Street has been receiving a huge push from H-D since its release a few years ago, it hasn’t typically been the first choice among the custom crowd. The genius part of this build is that from first glance, if it weren’t for the telltale fins of the liquid-cooled Revolution X V-twin, you might think you were looking at a bike that is well over 50 years old. To

further throw a bigger wrench into the moving machine, CWZ outfitted it with a ’60s Gasser drag-racing vibe complete with Rocket Racing wheels. With nothing short of an engineering marvel, a custom rear single-sided swingarm was fabricated that sets off the Launcher rear wheel complete with an old-school Hoosier slick tire. It’s the fit and finish and attention to details that are seen but not noticed that also separate Japan customs. It appears the gas tank has been relocated to the rear tail of the bike that sits over the relocated under-mounted radiator. Up front a custom hand shifter pokes its

head out of the faux gas tank. Handengraved crashbars on both sides of the bike protect the bodywork, while a custom exhaust keeps the hot air coming out high and tight. With such a large mix of new, old, custom, and stock parts all plastered together on one single bike, it could have quite easily looked like a flashback to your highschool prom revisited. Instead, what CWZ was able to accomplish was a bike that would look at home today in a museum or a dealership. Now that’s pretty tough to pull off and stands as testament to the craftsmanship, style, and ingenuity. HB

PERFECT BALANCE JUNIOR ASPRER’S CLEAN AND CLASSY CUSTOM SOFTAIL

L

iving the custom life isn’t something that happens overnight. There are a lot of lessons to learn, and more often than not they come from our mistakes and only after reviewing them over time. We’ve all had that one car or bike that got the Pringles package and went just a little bit too far and crossed into the ugly zone. As the lowrider motorcycle scene continues to grow and expand, the line between tasteful and tacky is starting to get very blurred. The goal of any custom, regardless of the genre, is to look as good in five or 10 years as it does today. Junior Asprer is one of those guys with a long list of bikes and cars in his custom career. Over time he’s developed a sense of balance that has been translated in this 2008 Harley-Davidson Softail. Here’s what Junior said about how he got started in the custom culture: “I started with imports back in the ’80s. All of my builds [Honda and Toyota] were

well known and recognized in the import scene. Many of them were featured in Sport Compact Car, Import Tuner, and Super Street. Later on I got my feet wet with a red-on-red 1962 Impala that was a full ground-up build. I eventually sold the Impala and then took a 10-year break from cars but always thought of building something more personal and something outside my comfort zone.” It was at that time that the bike bug took its first bite. “I purchased my bike new in 2008 and had it delivered to a shop,” Junior explains, “where it had its first makeover with billet wheels, drag bars, 2-into-1 exhaust, and chrome accessories. After three years, I wanted a new look, so I swapped out to beach bars, hard bags, dual exhaust.” It’s usually at this point where the build can take one of two routes. But Junior was very specific on the look he wanted to achieve. “Soon I got bored and wanted something a bit more custom but not over

the top,” he says. “My vision was a bike that would incorporate a little bit of everything but not overdo it. I wanted to find that perfect balance that would still be tasteful today as it would be 10 to 15 years later. I started off with the paint. Although I was happy with it black, it needed to stand out from the rest. That’s when I got connected with Manny Cisneros and I shared my vision. I wanted something subtle from a distance but all the details when seen up close. All I had to do was give Manny my color choices and he nailed the rest.” Junior could have easily stopped at this point. Instead, he decided to push the custom line a little bit further down the road. “I was happy with it, but something still wasn’t right,” he says. “My fenders needed a bit more stretch, so I had him stretch both front and rear with repaint. After I had the paint where I was satisfied, it was time for some personal touches and

Also my Facebook and Instagram friends Michael Gonzales, Danny Dobosz from Jak’d Up Customs, Abel Candy from Candy Coat, Tommy Garcia from Hurley Hogs, and Dan Wiles from SDHCOA and its members. rowing up, my grandfather owned a 1929 JDH that he ordered from the factory—all white with gold stripes. At the time it represented the holy grail of motorcycles for me. A couple years ago my youngest brother passed away, and I had built him an FL-style bike out of a 1979 FX I picked up from another buddy, Dave Perewitz. About 30 years ago my buddy Lou Trachtenberg, the founder of STD, was working on alternator/ generator cases. I bought a setup for an EVO top end, and he gave me a setup for a Shovel top end. So with all the parts I had been saving for the past 30 years I now had a frame, the top end, and crank assembly and could begin this tribute project to my granddaddy’s 1929 JDH.

AS A TRIBUTE THIS BIKE GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND PAYING HOMAGE TO FAMILY, FRIENDS, HARLEY-DAVIDSON, AND THE CUSTOM CULTURE WE ALL LIVE IN.

My buddy Kyle Shorey was an Invited Builder to the 2016 Hot Bike Tour. One night when we were hanging around in my barn sippin’ bourbon and benchracing, he asked if he could build the tribute bike for me. I said, “Hell yes, but it has to be white and it has to have skirted fenders.” Also, all my grandpa’s vehicles, bikes, and trucks had “My Pal” painted somewhere, but the rest I left up to him. I knew it would be a nicer build with Kyle running the show. I didn’t realize I was going to need a springer (thanks to John Studko from Mid-USA) rather than the Ceriani front end I had. Also, it was going to need a polished Baker four-speed rather than the rotary four-speed and new chrome Progressive 430s instead of my old FL covered shocks. The engine had to be flawless, so the STD cases and all the accumulated engine parts went to B&B Racing (thank you, Billy) for fin repair, polishing, and assembly. Over the course of the next nine months all the parts were

34 / HOTBIKE.COM

reworked, cleaned, polished, and inventoried. Then, as it usually happens, we realized the Hot Bike Tour was less than two months away. I don’t know how he did it, but six weeks later and the day before we had to hit the road the bike was done. When it was finished I had no complaints, just tons of gratitude for the outstanding build. We headed out to tackle the Blue Ridge Parkway with only 4 miles on the bike. I am here to tell you Mr. Shorey builds a solid bike you can run hard. We rode about 800 miles through the Blue Ridge, including the Tail of the Dragon, and the bike ran strong and handled great. As a tribute this bike goes above and beyond paying homage to family, friends, Harley-Davidson, and the custom culture we all live in. My personal thanks to Jeff Holt for inviting me this year. I had the best time and can’t wait to see all my friends on next year’s Hot Bike Tour. HB

Super Surprise Goes Flat CARISSA ROCKWELL’S 1947 FLATHEAD CUSTOM

HOT BIKE: HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THE BIKE? CARISSA ROCKWELL: Since 2013. HB: WHAT MADE YOU BUILD THIS BIKE? CR: My father and his crew, specifically Mr. Richard Linn from Groton Cycle Center, built the bike for me. It was a surprise gift for me that was put in a local motorcycle show at the Syracuse, New York, swap meet. When it took first place, they called my name to collect the plaque. That’s when I found out about the surprise build. HB: WHAT KIND OF LOOK WERE YOU GOING FOR? CR: Old-school bobber look of the 1960s. HB: WHAT IS DIFFERENT RIDING A FLATHEAD? CR: Of course the look and sound are different, but so is the feel. It’s a nostalgic feeling you get; it forces you to focus on the ride, the road, and yourself. There’s no interruptions, no worries. Just you and the opportunity for whatever the open road brings.

38 / HOTBIKE.COM

HB: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THIS BIKE? CR: The short history I have with it so far. I can’t say that I don’t enjoy the looks, questions, and surprises on people’s faces when I lift my leg around it and pull my helmet off. Not to mention its pretty color. HB: HOW DO PEOPLE REACT WHEN THEY SEE THE BIKE? CR: All smiles, of course! It’s a bike you can’t resist asking questions about. I welcome the curiosity and conversations.

“IT’S A NOSTALGIC FEELING YOU GET; IT FORCES YOU TO FOCUS ON THE RIDE, THE ROAD, AND YOURSELF. THERE’S NO INTERRUPTIONS, NO WORRIES.”

HB: HOW OFTEN DO YOU RIDE IT? CR: Not nearly as much as I want to. But like anyone else with active seven-year-old and fiveyear-old girls, I look to include them in whatever I can. So when I do get out, the kids are excited to be a part of the action. Whether I’m riding my ’47 or my 1999 Sportster, it’s a family event to be on the road with my kids, husband, parents, brother, and in-laws. When we get together to ride, there’s nothing better in the world.

Hot Bike: This bike doesn’t look like any we have seen. Where did the frame come from? Boulder Choppers: It started out that I wanted to build my own FXR frame. After reverse engineering a stock frame and figuring it out, I was able to build it. HB: What about the rest of the drivetrain? BC: I decided to see what else I had in the shop to build off the new frame with. Luckily, sitting in the shop was a 2000 FLH that was having EFI problems. I said to myself, “Self! Take that piece apart and use that on the FXR then part out the rest to fund it!”

HB: Those forks and wheels don’t look H-D. Where did they come from? BC: I’ve always been a fan of performance Japanese bikes, so I decided to incorporate some of that into the bike. I got my hands on a stock Suzuki Hayabusa. From that bike I used the front end, wheels, and calipers. I fabricated 1-1/2-inch trees to fit the Hayabusa front end to the FXR frame. HB: How did you get the rear to work? BC: I took the stock Hayabusa axle and cut it to 10-3/4 inches to fit inside the swingarm. Then I honed it out to 3/4-inch to fit a stock Harley axle. HB: What about the bodywork? BC: I searched around the shop to see what old stock tins I had lying around. I started modding them to fit the FXR frame. When it came to the paint, I went with Orange (Genesis 9:13). That’s one color of that I don’t have a bike with yet. HB: Great-looking bike. Anything else? BC: Now that it’s all finished, we name every bike we build. This one is named “Sinbad” after my sister-in-law who passed away from cancer. Her real name was Cynthia Cummings. HB

BLOWN, BLUE, AND DD CUSTOM’S OVER-THE-TOP LOWRIDER ROAD KING

T

he difference between being subtle and over the top can be measured in inches and not miles. For some, the lessis-more route is often taken when building a bike, where a discerning eye is needed to notice all the small intricacies of a thousand subtle touches that make the whole of the look. For others, it’s the in your face, loud and proud, success in excess that runs supreme. There’s no doubt the lowrider look is starting to gain a more mainstream acceptance across the custom crowd. With more and more builders taking on these types of builds and adding their own spin, it wasn’t going to be long before someone held the throttle wide open. Enter this 2007 Road King build by DD Custom Cycle.

54 / HOTBIKE.COM

HEAVY METAL | 2007 ROAD KING

This has to be one of the wildest lowrider-inspired bikes to be put in the pages of Hot Bike. Typically made for spotto-spot cruising, most lowrider bikes tend to focus on the style first and performance second. Not so here with a big old ProCharger huffer pushing out cool air on the 96-inch motor. Like a blown LS rolling on 5.20s, there’s no slow and low going on with this setup. But when excess runs first, why stop there with both the blower and the heads getting a little bit of style added with engraving and diamond cut for that extra metal sparkle? At first glance, the Ride Wright Fat 50 26-inch front wheel doesn’t have that scream-at-me big-wheel appearance. This is partially due to the custom DD front air setup and the 38-degree Misfit Short Neck that only added 2 inches of stretch. The combination kept both the wheel sitting high and tight like a boot-camp haircut. The most obvious thing that was done has to be the engraving by Hernan of Engrave It Inc. Let’s make a list of all the things that were not engraved: the exhaust tips. End of list. Ha! Seriously, when we say tip to tail, this bike truly wears the metal sculpting on anything that could be removed and shipped across the country. This did pose one bit of a challenge according to builder Dave Dupor. When asked

HEAVY METAL | 2007 ROAD KING what was the most difficult part of the build, he said: “The bike was shipped to me in a crate with hundreds of loose and engraved parts. It was all disassembled, and putting it all back together was just a nightmare. But the finished product is amazing.”

With the spectrum of customs running as wide as it is varied, this Road King motors far to the right. Whether it’s running down the highway at full speed or posted up at the local show, there’s little chance of blending in with the crowd. HB

PART II

W

ith the frame welded it was mock-up time! Here is where you start putting together all the different ideas you have had on how you want your ride to look. I wanted my ride to be aggressive yet smooth and clean. You need to begin with getting your mounts set up and tacked into place for the oil tank, seat, rear fender, struts, battery box plate, and gas tank. I decided to purchase a 120-volt MIG/Flux cored welder from Harbor Freight to accomplish this and save money. Most welders work by the hour, and it takes a great deal of time measuring and making sure everything is level and in a desired location. This would add up real quick if you did not do it yourself. The investment in your own welder will pay itself back several times over. Note that I just tacked the parts in place. Final welds are done later after you have your bike mocked up. I would only recommend a 120-volt welder for tacking. It just does

66 / HOTBIKE.COM

not have enough power for a full weld with steel this thick. Once you have these key components in place, the build really starts to become exciting. Pay attention to detail and take the time to do some extras. I took the pulley cover and cut a large portion away to expose the pulley. An RSD cover enhanced the look even further. Since I decided to have no front fender, I ground off the fender mounts on the lowers and had them lathed out for a smooth finish. The stock wheels were pitted and tired looking. Purchasing new wheels was out of the question. While I was originally dismantling the bike I not only had the wheels but also the rotors and rear pulley powdercoated gloss black by Sumax. The results were incredible! They looked better than brand new with the sleek blacked-out look. A small lightweight Antigravity lithium battery saved space and allowed for extra room in the battery box to hide away unsightly wires. A Joker Machine air

SUMAX POWDERCOAT

Wheels, rotors, and pulley are back from powdercoat. Sumax was the first to specialize in powdercoating motorcycle parts. It does high-end quality work with an outstanding finish.

REAR FENDER CUT

The TC Bros. rear fender comes as a full 180-degree spun piece allowing you to cut to any desired length.

REAR FENDER HOSE AND SPACERS

To keep fender-to-wheel spacing consistent I duct-taped a garden hose around the tire and used half-inch wood spacers on each side of the wheel.

SHAVING LOWER LEGS

MOUNTING OIL TANK

Since I decided on no front fender I wanted to clean up the lowers by removing the fender mounts. Mounts were ground down, and I had a local shop turn them on a lathe.

I cut my own oil tank mounts and used magnetic clamps to hold them and the oil tank into place making sure it was level and had enough spacing from the engine.

The bike is completely disassembled. The frame, engine covers, top end of the engine, and rear brake caliper mount will all be painted gloss black.

cleaner not only looked great but would provide better airflow to the engine. The SikPipes exhaust checked the box for aggressive! TC Bros. chrome drag bars were paired with Jaybrake hand controls, and a Dakota Digital gauge gave the bike a modern easy-to-read display. Jaybrake grips would help me hang on. A MidUSA headlight was put in place to guide my ride. Since my style was more on the aggressive side, TC Bros. mid-foot controls were chosen. They looked so much cleaner over the stock ones and made sense since I had the drag bars. To provide a little extra cushion TC Bros. had an air ride solo seat kit. The bike was taking on a new shape, so different-sized brake lines were needed, and Magnum Shielding handled that need with a huge selection to choose from. Since the frame is now 2 inches longer, a new BDL belt is needed to convert the 1,200cc of power to the rear Shinko tires. A highly visible Custom Dynamics TruFlex LED lighting strip was used on the side of the license-plate bracket to function as a run/brake light. I used new chrome rotor screws and pulley screws since the stock bolts were dull and unsightly. In addition to all of this I felt the stock gas tank looked too large perched up on top of the frame, so I decided on a smaller Cycle Standard tank and topped it off with an RSD contrast-cut cap. You can also easily spend less than I did on purchasing the bike. Look for one with higher miles or shop salvage bikes that were hit in the rear. You are cutting that part off. Many of your stock parts like hand and foot controls can be used. You can spray paint your tank and fenders to save money. Chrome bolts, paint, and extra powdercoating all add up quickly, and they are not all needed right away. Additions can always be made in the future when the budget allows. I saved for last what I disliked the most, the electric. Luckily it was rather simple. When you initially pull the wire harness from the bike, label the different wires when you clip and disconnect them so you know which one did what. I deleted the turn signals and mounted the ignition switch down lower underneath the oil cooler to simplify things. Using just a headlight and rear run/brake light made for so many less wires. Lay your harness on a table and remove all the wires you no longer need. It was easy to hide them all away and keep the clean,

REAR FENDER MOUNT AND SEAT BRACKET TACK & SEAT PIVOT

The rear fender mount and seat bracket are centered on the frame and tacked into place. The seat kit is equipped with air ride so the mounting of a pivot is required.

desired look. Electric was complete, everything was tacked in place, and all of the parts and accessories were fitted. To do all the final welds and have everything painted I had to take apart the bike again. The frame was painted gloss black, and I decided to disassemble the engine to have the side covers and top end of the motor painted with a high-heat ceramic gloss black paint. Frame and engine pieces were back from paint. I decided I would like to powdercoat the gas tank and rear fender bright blue. It was cheaper to do than have it painted and actually showed a hint of silver flecks. Since the bike was mocked up, everything went into place with ease and I ended up with exactly what I envisioned. Despite some expected hurdles, this was a great learning experience, and I can now say I built my own bike. It was a very rewarding accomplishment. Every time I am out riding it I get a ton of compliments and questions. People ask what kind of bike it is and who made it. With pride I tell them I made it and that they also can do it! HB

t A little bit of chrome

goes a long away. This front end looks totally transformed!

I

’m not afraid to say I love chrome. The more the better, I always say. The only problem is that once you get started, you have to keep going or what you have never looks right. For example, what’s the point of putting a shiny front wheel on the front of your bike when it’s held on by a pair of ugly brushed forks? Sport Chrome has the answer with its chrome legs and cowbells to help dress up your front end. Since we had the forks pulled out, we decided to add the Legend Suspensions AXEO front suspension kit. We enlisted the help of longtime Hot Bike supporter Wheel Works to turn the wrenches on this 2016 Harley-Davidson Road Glide.

SPORT CHROME AND LEGEND SUSPENSIONS AXEO FRONT KITS 1 p Raise the bike securely where the front end and wheel can

be removed.

4 pUse a permanent marker to mark the location of the forks

from the triple trees. Next loosen the bolts on the triple trees.

7 p Here you can see the difference between the chrome

and stock fork legs.

70 / HOTBIKE.COM

2 p Remove the front wheel and brakes.

5 p Carefully remove the forks and place aside.

8 p Place the forks in a proper soft vise and loosen the fork

bolt. Remove the fork tube and spring and let drain.

3 p Remove the front fender to gain better access to the triple

trees and cowbells.

6 p Remove the stock cowbells and replace with the

chrome ones.

9 p Once drained, remove the stock fork piston and ring.

sion kit, set the preload using the chart supplied.

11 p Install the Legend Suspensions kit by following the

instructions provided with the supplied components.

pReinstall the lower suspension nuts and torque to specs.

pFill with the supplied fork oil to the level suggested,

pumping the fork periodically to ensure that no air bubbles are left.

IMZZ ELITE FXRP BAG BRACKET INSTALL

SKILL LEVEL // BEGINNER

T

he popularity of installing FXR and Dyna Police bags has hit an all-time high. The only problem is both the FXRP and FXDP bags were discontinued by H-D long ago. Of course they still can be found used, but there was another problem. There was no simple way to attach them to 2007–later Harleys until IMZZ Elite stepped up to the plate. Yes, IMZZ has fabbed up a simple yet effective P-Bag Rail System that can and will get you the police bags of your dreams mounted the quick and easy way. HB

P-BAGS FOR D-BAGS 1 p Here are the shiny black powdercoat IMZZ Police bag rails ready to install.

3 p The IMZZ bag rail was then installed onto the backing plate and the shock mount.

74 74/ /HOTBIKE.COM HOTBIKE.COM

2 p First the inner backing plate was installed to the bike via the fender mounts.

4 p The bag strap was installed onto the outer rail and inner backing plate.

5 p The FXRP bag was then slid into the IMZZ P-Bag Rail System

and attached via the included ARP 12-point hardware.

6 p IMZZ designed the P-Bag Rail System to work with regular or

piggyback shocks and FXRP or Dyna Defender (FXDP) Bags.

7 p And here are the old 1993 H-D FXRP bags nestled in the new

IMZZ P-Bag rail system on a 2015 H-D Dyna Lowrider. SOURCES: IMZZ ELITE imzzelite.com

nyway you can open up the breathing on your Twin Cam Harley is a good thing. Especially when the intake you put on the bike is as good looking as the K&N AirCharger. The pleasant-to-look-at sandcast aluminum finish of the AirCharger harks back to a time when muscle cars ruled the land. And the big free-breathing million-mile air cleaner that adds horsepower hanging on the end of it is not a bad thing either. We put it on a 2015 Twin Cam motor with cam work and a free-flowing exhaust, and it really woke the bike up. Here’s how we did it. HB

T

his is my 2008 FXDB Street Bob with a custom bagger conversion. I did all the fabrication wiring, bodywork, airbrush, and paintwork in my garage. I also added a Jenson 7-inch touchscreen/navigation unit with four Kicker Marine speakers. A DIY air ride, 16-inch Fred Contlin bars, 21-inch DNA Mammoth Fat Spoke front wheel, CNC Fastback seat, and V&H Big Radius 2-into-1 exhaust were also added. JAMES STREET High Point, NC

UGLY KID JOE The V-Rod, not the FXRT, is the bike no one liked for years because it looked ugly. I just finished one of mine with some parts that I made and will be selling. I made the airbox, risers, bars, and pipes, which give it a totally different look from the European Transformer/Mad Max style. They make the perfect modern chopper— raked out, high-horsepower motor, fat rear tire, with a small gas tank. That’s a lot of bike for the money considering you don’t need to spend any money for motor work with 100 reliable horsepower at the push of a button. MARK SANDBO marxmetalwerks.com

H

ooligan. Yeah, that word might describe quite a few of you Hot Bike readers, but it’s also a sort of freespirited anti-racing type of flat-track competition and general motorcycle movement. You might have seen some photos or video on the internet of people on street tracker types of motorcycles ripping around a dirt track or even jumping over freeway on-ramps and anything else that gets into their damn way. Like it or not, it’s part of the muchneeded newer generation of consumers in the V-twin motorcycle world. Racing and raising hell on American V-twins in the dirt is nothing new, as both Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles have been “doing it in the dirt” for about 100 years. It’s also a very big part of their heritage. Back in the day racing was one of the biggest ways to raise brand awareness and notoriety amongst consumers. The old motto “race on Sunday, sell on Monday” really was true back then. It was also a sporting event attended by the general public much like a baseball or football game. American flat-track racing became quite popular in the 1920s and ’30s but then died out a bit with the Great Depression and World War II hitting the country. It picked up steam again in the 1950s and became one of the most popular forms of motorsport racing in the United States for the next couple of decades. Fast-forward to the early ’90s and American Pro Flat Track was looking for an inexpensive and inviting way to get more racers, manufacturers, and sponsors involved. Then 1993 was the year the Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster Performance Series became a support

class run in conjunction with the AMA Grand National Championship. The bikes were cheap, and the money for placing was pretty good, so quite a few of the premier flat-track racers participated. The legendary Jay Springsteen was a regular participant and winner in the series. Jay and 1993 883 series champ Ricky Graham were definitely “hooligans” in every way, shape, and form. In their prime they toured the country more similar to the Rolling Stones than traditional professional athletes—raising hell, having fun with the trophy girls after a win, and other acts of rowdiness that can’t be mentioned here were a normal occurrences. The 883 Series rules were set up to keep the bike as stock as possible and to keep competition close. Engines and frames were kept stock with the exception for blueprinting allowed on the engine. Wheels, tires, shocks, exhaust, intake, seat, and tank were all easy bolt-on mods that everyone, and most of these parts were available to the general public as well. This started a true “street tracker” movement that is part of what inspired the modern hooligan movement. The 883 series fizzled out in 2005 but not before a few of the modern stars of flat-tracking snatched up a few 883 championships— Bryan Smith and Jared Mees. The catalyst for the hooligan racing movement started roughly about four years ago during Costa Mesa Speedway’s “Harley Night.” An annual event held during the Speedway motorcycle races, it has traditionally been composed of guys on Road Kings with apehangers and fat tire choppers tip-toeing along the track like bulls in a china shop. There are multiple crashes and

wipeouts much to the delight of the beerinfused crowd. The lineup of bikes at Harley night started to change when industry veteran and exhaust guru Hunter Klee started bringing out purpose-built flat-track Sportsters. Much like the 883 series bikes of old, they were street machines converted for full-on flat-track assaults. These machines appealed to a new generation of riders, including myself, who come from a background of action sports such as BMX, skateboarding, snowboarding, etc. A few more Harley nights came, and along with it more and more of these street trackers were built up. It was really starting to pick up steam. Along the way Mark Atkins of Rusty Butcher fame, Roland Sands (who had been building similar machines for years), the brothers from Suicide Machine, and The Speed Merchant crew became part of the core group of this hooligan movement. Fast-forward to the present day and this hooligan thing is a forced to be reckoned with. Both Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles have officially sponsored hooligan teams that race all across the country in high-profile and televised events. These teams and races are used for brand awareness and the cool factor with masses, especially with the younger generation—the same as it was in the ’20s and ’30s. Just goes to show you that things really do keep coming around and around, especially when it’s sliding around a dirt track sideways with the throttle pinned to the stops. HB
