Happy Golden Jubilee
Welcome to a new edition of Hotel Insider and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all in hospitality who’ve done their part to keep the dream alive. It’s been a remarkable year so far, and hopefully will be full of potential despite the clouds on the horizon.
In this issue’s Conversation, we have a talk with a giant in Maldives hospitality – Martin van der Reijden, who’s worked alongside such celebrated names as Tom McLoughlin, Dominik Kruhl and Mark Hehir on setting up iconic properties like Huvafen Fushi. Meanwhile, in our cover story we see how serendipity had a role in shaping our future from a small fishing economy to a tourism powerhouse.
We also take a look behind the scenes at the Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands floral arrangements in this issue’s Back of the Haus. Fresh flowers are part of the resort’s DNA
and it takes a lot of effort for places to look so effortlessly pretty.
Speaking of floral arrangements, our featured female hotelier this time is none other than Ajja Ajwad, the Ritz-Carlton Maldives’ dedicated florist. She speaks to us about her journey, how she moved forward despite setbacks and how something small like fresh flowers can really add a sense of refinement to an already elegant space.
Last but not least, we met with Emerald Maldives’ GM Srikanth Devarapalli. We’ve spoken with staff in that resort and traits they all admire in him are his approachability and the ability to pick out talents.

Martin van der Reijden
Martin van der Reijden is a man of many talents, as you will see in the course of the interview. But one particular trait that stands out is his willingness to risk the safety of the known for the chaos and potential of the unknown. He is a key figure in 21st century hospitality in the Maldives, having worked with some of the most daring personalities and brands in the country. Now, he has settled down, for the time being at Cora Cora Maldives, a resort that shows guests and team members what it means to be free.
Hotel Insider: You’ve been a busy person since coming to the Maldives decades ago. You’ve worked with some of the industry’s biggest players: Tom McLoughlin, Mark Hehir, Dominic Ruhl and also with Dirk de Cuyper as part of Crossroads.
Martin: Yes, I’ve been several different people over the years – from general manager, interior designer, landscaper, lighting consultant, procurement specialist to project manager. I think what’s really important for someone who joins the industry and really wants to make a mark is not to let themselves be boxed in. You don’t want to join the front office and be a front office manager after ten or fifteen years because that’s really middle of the road. That is being said with utmost respect for people that are enjoying a certain aspect of our industry and are happy in that chosen field but if you want to get to a point where you start creating new products or services you must have experienced all elements of hotel development.
Hotel Insider: You spent close to twenty years with Hilton here before you made a move to Huvafen Fushi.
Martin: It was a very difficult choice because Hilton gave me a really generous offer when I let them know that I wanted to quit, a
large Hilton in a bustling capital city. You have to know that Hilton takes care of everything for you if you’re with them. And I had two children. But there’s something in me that prevents me from getting too comfortable in one place I think, and I told Tom and the gang “yes.” So, I was moving from a massively structured environment to something that had just started out, Per Aquum, which was very hip at the time. It was me getting out of the corporate world, from structured to completely unstructured. And if you know Tom, he is known for big picture ideas –structures will eventually follow.
Hotel Insider: We’ve heard stories. He’s a legend.
Martin: Of course. Anyway, this was around the time when Soneva Gili and One&Only opened, and of the latter, people were saying ‘Oh, this is an artificial island, it is much too expensive, it will never work.’ But twenty years later, One&Only is still considered the cream of the crop.
Anyway, so, for me, jumping into the water with Tom and Mark Hehir and all was like taking a leap into cold water. There was a steep learning curve, I had to learn to do a lot by myself without guidance from a corporate head office. You had to find money, find
investors, find development opportunities.
Hotel Insider: You also started LUX* North Male Atoll in 2013, could you tell us more about it?
Martin: LUX* North Male was a beautiful project. We began with the idea to build twenty super-luxury villas, each one with its own sailing boat that would anchor right in front of the villa. The flat roofs, curved walls all in white and the interiors with beautiful touches of colourful elements and art is something we were very proud of – it took almost five years from planning to opening. This process from initial concept to master planning, financing, project management and the appointment of an operator is what I find the most rewarding work in our industry as you can literally see “dreams coming true.”
LUX* North Male was recently sold to Jumeriah and they are operating it now under their own flag.
Hotel Insider: You also worked on a watershed project, Crossroads.
Martin: Yes, that was another first for the Maldives. It was a huge project, reclaimed islands and a brand-new concept of a marina, a township and two international hotels all sharing the same interconnected land. There were a lot of naysayers in the early days. The whole marina idea was practically unheard of, and it’s bundled along with a museum, a hip Lounge club and shopping venues. It must have seemed too much for some but we’ve now come to see just how successful Crossroads is.
Hotel Insider: Then you became involved with Cora Cora, what used to be Loama.
Martin: Yes, but it had fallen into ruin essentially and I had to find out what’s there. And that’s what we did for four or five months, meet at eight every morning and go with the entire crew, hacking away the overgrown jungle. We came up with a landscaping plan and it took about half a year to get a clear view of what we had to do. And towards the end of it, we realised that we needed to come up with a brand.
Hotel Insider: Yeah, Cora Cora is pretty catchy.
Martin: Yes it is, right? A lot of people ask
me why we named it ‘Cora Cora.’ What’s the rationale behind it? And I guess an intellectual or academic type of answer would be to say that it has something to do with corals and colours.
But let me tell you what really happened. We had ten names from a branding agency on a PowerPoint presentation and a guy who speaks really nice English and he repeated these names, each one for like half a minute or so.
So, later, I had four or five people in my office and I said ‘OK, guys, we’ll listen to this and each of you will give the top three names on your list.’ And the thing is I cannot remember the other names on the list besides Cora Cora. Maybe there were very Maldivian sounding names like Mirihi and lots ending or starting with Fushi. Cora Cora was on four of the five sheets, I believe, so we went: Yes, that’s it. It was decided in ten minutes, our brand.
Hotel Insider: That’s a very cool story. So, what’s Cora Cora’s approach to hospitality?
Martin: Well, we thought ‘what do people really crave now, after COVID?’ And we thought: freedom. And it’s massively important because based on that, you can plan an entire customer journey, putting activities together that enhance that feeling of being free – getting a tattoo (fake ones), playing the guitar, dance, experience sound healing, learn to paint, read wellness books in your room,
take away food to wherever you want to eat it and so on.
But to create this sense of freedom for guests, your staff have to be “free” to a great extent, too. And that was our whole human resources angle. They’re not restricted to their rooms, they can go play badminton, soccer, ping pong, have karaoke nights, do some gardening, raise their own chickens, ducks, fish etc.
So now, I’ve had a number of people telling me that the service is excellent and very consistent, and that our staff seem genuinely happy. And I believe it all comes from that sense of freedom – I am not saying that all of our team is super happy every day, but I believe we have formed a sort of family bond amongst us that I have never experienced before.
Hotel Insider: Thank you, Martin. You’ve made us want to experience this for ourselves.
"We thought ‘what do people really crave now, after COVID?’ Freedom. And it’s massively important because based on that, you can plan an entire customer journey, putting activities together that enhance that feeling of being free."

Of Seas & Skies: Storm Ready in the Equator
Even before the sun rises and warms the seas, 24-year-old Hassan Saajin and the crew of fishers amid ‘Kandu Roalhi’ are getting ready for work, to brave the elements.
Right before they leave in search of shoals of tuna in the ocean around Huvadhu Atoll in the South of Maldives - one of the largest natural atolls in the world, Saajin has a browse through the Maldives Meteorological Services (MET Office) website. The marine weather forecast for the day predicted scattered thunder showers, heavy at times, with possibility of winds gusting 35 miles per hour on moderate seas with waves at a height between 3 to 6 feet. Saajin informs his captain, and they call off work, choosing to stay ashore.
“Being a fisherman has taught me many valuable life lessons: how to be brave, how to be patient, and how important it is to fully focus on safety,” said Saajin, better known as ‘Zuvaan Masveriya’ (Young Fisherman), who developed his love for fishing at a young age.
Saajin is unarguably the most well-known youth fisher in the country. He shares his work and spreads awareness about the industry on his popular social media channels - advocating against the challenges faced by the fishing community and encouraging younger generations to enter the field. He has also registered his own foundation ‘Dhivehi Masverin’ (Maldivian Fishermen), an NGO that aims to promote pole-and-line fishing together with all the related activities of fishing in the Maldives. For Saajin, being able to access the weather forecast on his phone via the Met Office website is a literal lifesaver - putting critical information he and his fellow crew need to prepare for concerning weather events right at his fingertips before they journey off to the seas.
The upgraded website of the Met Office was officially launched at the event commemorating World Meteorological Day
on 23 March. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives, with the generous contribution of the Government of Japan, the website brings real-time climate updates and alerts to the public more accessibly in both English and the Maldivian language Dhivehi. The new userfriendly website has better-localized weather forecasts as well as accurate and crucial weather-related data and information that communities need for better, resilient, and climate-proof planning.
Halfway across the isles from Saajin, in Raa Atoll Maduvvari Island in central Maldives, homemaker Sazna Abdul Rasheed, 38, was sweltering under the tropical sun. It was the hottest time of the year, with the March equinox having just passed. The dry spell they have been having has taken a toll on the community, who had exhausted community and household water tanks. She could barely contain her excitement as she gets ready to collect the rainwater that they are expecting to receive in abundance from the heavens this
afternoon. Someone had mentioned they had seen this weather forecast on a new app.
The Probable Area of Rainwater Harvesting (PARH) function is a new feature added to the ‘Moosun’ app of the Met Office, which sends real-time alerts on probable rainfall. “PARH sends notifications to the public on potential areas and possible volume of rain,” said Ahmed Rasheed, Director of Meteorology at the MET Office. Supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through UNDP Maldives, the function will assist in rainwater harvesting and water management, helping improve water security in island communities.
Although Sazna’s island of Raa Maduvvari is one of the recent recipients of the water network under the GCF/UNDP project led by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology (MECCT) and her home now gets a regular supply of water, Sazna is still adamant about collecting the rainwater today.
“The water network in Raa Maduvvari Island will give 1,628 residents, including 790 women, access to safe drinking water, increase water security and help the people of
the island to overcome water shortages caused due to climate change. But we would not want people to stop relying on time-tested methods of resilience that have worked for them through the ages and made better economic sense. I refer to the old adage ‘veheythaa fen nagaashey’ (collect water when it rains). Keep doing that. Keep being prepared. Build on your self-sufficiency and become resilient.”
These were the remarks of Vera Hakim, Deputy Resident Representative at UNDP at the inauguration of the water system in Sazna’s island, and these are the words Sazna is inspired by, as she cleans out her roof with an ekle broom – made out of the midrib of coconut leaves – to harvest the rain. The rain will collect in her roof gutter, that will channel the water into downspouts and then into large household tanks ready for daily use; from drinking to cooking and washing. The way it’s been done for generations.
For the Maldives, its unique geographical attributes make its water resource situation complex and diverse. With more than 80% islands already experiencing drinking water
shortages annually during the dry season, the country is faced with freshwater security problems resulting from climate change induced variable rainfall patterns, more frequent extreme weather events and sea-level rise induced salinity of groundwater.
With climate change causing more extreme weather in the Maldives, while dry spells are prolonged on one side, storms are likely to increase on the other. Climate change and economic insecurity from lost catch create a ‘perfect storm’, putting ever-increasing pressure on communities that rely on fishery. Real-time and localized weather forecasts would be helpful in trying to predict levels of disruption to fishermen as a result of changing storminess and climates and would go a long way in ensuring safety of those out at sea. It would also ensure preparedness for communities who rely on rainwater harvesting as a source of life.
Solutions such as the weather apps provide much needed tools for the people of Maldives to become resilient and prepare sustainably for an uncertain future.
Hussain Niyaz
Hotel Insider talks with Ooredoo’s chief commercial officer Hussain Niyaz on different topics ranging from exciting new products for the hospitality industry to how Covid is continuing to change the way business is done.
Hotel Insider: Can you tell us about some exciting products Ooredoo has specifically for the hospitality industry?
Hussain Niyaz: We’ve been transforming tech in tourism industry for a while now, we’ve helped resorts move out of traditional telecom services and expand their repertoire, focussing on smart solutions such as digital butlers, video conferencing and so on.
You have to bear in mind that major corporations come to the Maldives to have their board meetings and other business gatherings, sometimes with their clients. Resorts would contact us asking for temporary solutions and we thought it would be a good idea to have those solutions at resorts permanently. It could be a selling point for them.
Our latest product, one we’re very excited about, is our Data Centre in Hulhumale'. We launched it last year and it is the Maldives’ sole dedicated data centre. It is a tier three ready facility, meaning it is more than adequate for big tech companies like Google and Facebook.
Hotel Insider: Could you explain what a data centre does for our readers who are not so familiar with its functions?
Hussain Niyaz: Basically, companies can come and host their solutions at the facility.
"Our latest product, one we’re very excited about, is our Data Centre in Hulhumale'. We launched it last year and it is the Maldives’ sole dedicated data centre. It is a tier three ready facility, more than adequate for big tech companies like Google and Facebook."
For instance, Google wants to have a server in the Maldives. They can have one at our data centre and manage it remotely. And last year, we connected the data centre to a submarine cable from Sri Lanka.
Now, let’s move on to resorts again. We’ve seen that resorts have a dedicated IT department and server rooms. But today, most information is stored on the cloud. So, we are offering data hosting services to resorts, meaning instead of having and maintaining costly physical server rooms and large IT departments, they can use our facility and our people. They can have their resort management system at our centre and still use it seamlessly at the property.
For example, a leading bank’s server is hosted at our data centre. Their HQ is here in Male' but their agents are elsewhere. So you don’t need to be physically close anymore, whether two points are connected in one building or across opposite ends of the country, it’s all the same now.
We also provide international connectivity to major international hotel chains, whose systems are based in a different region and country from where they are headquartered.
Hotel Insider: You must get asked this a lot but what do resorts stand to gain by partnering with you?
Hussain Niyaz: The biggest advantage for any customer, resorts included, would be that we are a truly international group with international standards. We come with new tech, essentially all possible smart telecom solutions that a resort could possibly want. Plus, we have very competitive pricing and we don’t let prices affect our quality.
Hotel Insider: Could you tell us about how the telecom landscape has changed post Covid?
Hussain Niyaz: The post-Covid landscape has changed a great deal, and it is continuing to change. We’re in the midst of doing a detailed analysis ourselves to fully understand where we are headed. We do know that the change is happening around the technology. Our lives seem to be more dependent on tech now, for instance, whether you work from home or study or even enjoy concerts. Things that used to be physical are now virtual. Our business
meetings are virtual – back in the day, if you can’t book a meeting room there’d be no meeting but that situation seems laughable now.
It has also affected how people travel. People are travelling less on business now, it’s more for leisure.
We’re still researching the effects of Covid but we’ve seen that it has had a positive effect on productivity, we’re doing more with less.
Hotel Insider: Before we part, what are some things Ooredoo has in store for us? What’s going to happen in the near future?
Hussain Niyaz: There are plenty of exciting things going on right now, AI for instance. It’s going to become a greater part of our lives as we move ahead. We’ll be digitising shops, we’re moving things on to apps now. You could even get a SIM card right here and now – you order a SIM card and it will be delivered. We also have eSIM, as you may know, you just download a SIM like you might any other app, and this service is compatible with most phones released from last year onwards.
Also, we were approached by guesthouses saying that it’s difficult for their guests to get hold of SIM cards, and could we help them with that? So, we started giving out complimentary SIM cards to guesthouses that they can offer their guests as part of a welcome package. The cards have some data and activation is very easy. It’s proving very popular.
Hotel Insider: Thank you, Niyaz.
Srikanth Devarapalli
"I’m very pleased with the Maldives’ government’s response to COVID-19, it is very dynamic and tweaks measures as the situation develops."
A young, seasoned hotelier with almost 20 years of experience in people-oriented positions, Srikanth Devarapalli now heads Emerald Maldives Resort and Spa in Raa Atoll. His youthful energy and approachableness endear him to his team, superiors and guests. Srikanth believes we can get through COVID-19, and thinks there is at least three years of boom-time left for our industry.
General Manager, Emerald Maldives Resort & SpaHotel Insider: Thank you so much for inviting us. It’s great to be here and see what those awesome TripAdvisor reviews were based on.
Srikanth Devarapalli: Yes, thank you. We’ve been very fortunate with the reviews, but all the credit goes to our team. We answer every review, not just on TripAdvisor but all major platforms like Booking.com and Google Reviews. You might know that we are in TripAdvisor’s top five resorts in the Maldives. I believe one thing that helps us is that we don’t ask our guests to write reviews. And you will see that the majority of the guest comments are about our team. They will mention specific
people and say that “this person has been outstanding.” I think that happens because we create those truly genuine moments for guests instead of focussing on getting great reviews or awards.
Hotel Insider: Also, we noticed that there is a good mix of guests here, not just couples but families and groups of friends.
Srikanth Devarapalli: That’s right. Emerald Maldives was designed not to cater to one segment, it is a diversified product aiming to capture different types of visitors. So, we have over-water villas for couples and honeymooners, plus two-bedroom and threebedroom beach villas for families and groups.
Also, we have one of the Maldives’ largest kids’ clubs with great facilities, including a language specialist, and an excellent range of activities.
Hotel Insider: We were also curious as to what drew you to Emerald Maldives in the first place.
Srikanth Devarapalli: Well, in fact, when I first arrived in the Maldives, I was a much junior team member, and I don’t think I felt supported and loved as much anywhere else. Also, when I moved out of the Maldives, a lot of team members said they’d want to work with me if I ever became general manager. They wanted to create something very personalised and exciting. So, it was always
there in the back of my mind that if I ever returned to the Maldives, I’d do so to open a property here.
Of course, I also wanted to prove myself. I think the timing was just right – I was approached by the COO here Mr. Aldo Scarapicchia and I thought he had a very clear vision. I attribute a lot of our success to him. And usually, when you’re opening a hotel, you’d look for GMs with several years of experience. The COO though had a different idea, he wanted someone young and dynamic who wanted to prove themselves. So, everything kind of aligned for me.
Hotel Insider: Let’s talk about your career now for a bit. You started out with the Oberoi in India.
Srikanth Devarapalli: Yes, as a fresh hotel management graduate, I was like a lot of my fellow graduates – working at the Oberoi was a dream come true. We did not have as many international brands in 2002 as we do now. The Oberoi is India’s most luxurious brand and widely considered the best place to start your hospitality career. I was very fortunate to be part of their team at the Oberoi Amarvilas. It’s in Agra and every villa would have a postcard view of the Taj Mahal. It’s one of the most stunning resorts even now, and it was quite new when I joined. We had one month of intensive training prior to meeting guests because they expected a certain standard of service.
Hotel Insider: That sounds awesome, really. You also worked with Taj, another great Indian brand.
Srikanth Devarapalli: yes, Taj Exotica was my first experience of the Maldives. I hadn’t heard of the Maldives before, and I saw an article in a magazine about Taj Exotica recently winning a prestigious award. I saw the aerial view of the water villas and I was very curious. I did some research and sent my CV across and was lucky to get selected. I worked four years at a stretch for Taj and also very briefly the Four Seasons in the Maldives.
Hotel Insider: And you moved back to India after that
Srikanth Devarapalli: I did. It was because I wanted to balance my career with experience in island resorts and at city hotels because
you need that to grow professionally. So, I joined the Hyatt Group and worked at some of the busiest city hotels. It was an important period as I became familiar with a lot of recent trends, industry standards and best practices.
Hotel Insider: We also wanted to get your thoughts on Raa Atoll becoming a fullfledged luxury destination.
Srikanth Devarapalli: Raa has been unexplored for a long time, but we’ve seen quite a lot of development in the past few years. It’s good because it means employment for many people in the atoll, directly and indirectly. We’ve seen some luxury brands settle down here. And I suppose the allure is that it is so pristine and the islands are fairly large. Plus, of course you have some great diving and snorkelling spots here where you can expect to see megafauna like manta rays and sharks. These sites are underexploited so really attractive to guests.
Hotel Insider: We also wanted to get your thoughts on this: the WHO director general warned us that we won’t be going back to the old normal in the foreseeable future. How do you see this affecting business?
Srikanth Devarapalli: Well, we have to adapt, that’s crucial. And the practices we have in place now are vastly different from those we had only a couple of years ago. The cleaning and disinfecting, the distancing, all of that is now part of our DNA. And I’m very pleased with the Maldives’ government’s response to COVID-19, it is very dynamic and tweaks measures as the situation develops.
Hotel Insider: Before we wind up, we spoke to some senior industry figures who said these were the last days of the tourism boom. We won’t be seeing developments like we did these past few years.
Srikanth Devarapalli: I’m not so sure. Things will settle down but we may see new kinds of development, like we did with Embudu Lagoon and Fari Islands for instance. Though we’ve seen a great many international brands establish themselves here I think we have at least three more years of boom-time left.
"Raa [Atoll] has been unexplored for a long time, but we’ve seen quite a lot of development in the past few years. It’s good because it means employment for many people in the atoll, directly and indirectly."

Celebrating 50 Years of Tourism - How Paradise Was Born
A travel enthusiast. A chance encounter. A voyage to discover a remote country. These were the fortuitous seeds for the birth of tourism in the Maldives.
One day in 1971, a young travel agent named George Corbin walked into the Maldives embassy in Colombo. An Italy-based operator specialised in diving tours, Corbin was looking for an “exotic new destination.” He thought he had found one on an old map.
“I saw in the middle of the Indian Ocean all these little dots. I said wow. I checked and I found out the name: The Maldive Islands,” he recalled in an interview with Television Maldives during a recent visit.
Intrigued by the secluded archipelago, Corbin tried to gather information. But “nobody knew anything about the Maldives.” He decided to fly to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), assuming there would be an embassy for the neighbouring country. When he got to the office, Corbin was told there was no air service to the Maldives. But his luck was about to change. A young staffer saw him and approached.
“A real gentleman, exquisite person by the name of Ahmed Naseem. And he said, you want to go to the Maldives. I said yes, and he said for what reason? I said I’d like to see if it’s a good destination for diving. Sure,
he said, go to the port, there’s a cargo ship leaving tomorrow,” Corbin recounted the first meeting with his future partner.
Onboard the ship, the captain introduced Corbin to a Maldivian. It turned out to be the same gentleman he met at the embassy. The pair chatted and became acquainted during the journey. After three days at sea, the ship arrived in the Maldives.
“Heaven on earth”
“This is paradise,” was Corbin’s first thought upon sighting Malé and the islands surrounding the capital, a prophetic sentiment as “paradise” would become synonymous with the idyllic, picture-postcard destination.
As the ship sailed past Hulhulé, Corbin was mesmerised by the pristine tropical islands and their coral reefs under crystal clear waters and turquoise blue lagoons. Naseem put Corbin up at a waterfront house, now the Maagiri Hotel, and introduced him to Mohamed Umar Manik and Hussain Afeef. The four men, all in their early 20s, shook hands to form a joint venture.
On 16 February 1972, Corbin returned with the first group of tourists to ever visit the Maldives, mainly Italian journalists and photographers. They travelled on a chartered Air Ceylon flight from Colombo to the small airstrip on Hulhulé. They stayed in Malé and went diving, snorkelling and spear fishing.
“It worked beautifully,” said Corbin. The pioneers went on to build the country’s first resort on Vihamanaafushi, an uninhabited coconut plantation island chosen for its proximity to the airport. The young Maldivian entrepreneurs - who were familiar with the
then-15-year-old service industry in Sri Lanka - built 30 rooms with coral stone walls and palm thatch roofs. Kurumba Village opened on 3 October 1972. As the island lacked a jetty, the first guests disembarked from boats and waded through shallow waters to reach the resort.
Humble beginnings
In the half-century since Corbin’s auspicious visit, the Maldives has transformed itself from a poor island nation of sleepy fishing
villages to an upper-middle income country. Asia’s smallest country became a premier tourist destination, an exclusive getaway for celebrities, sports stars and the uber-wealthy. A world-renowned brand, the Maldives now boasts the world’s largest seaplane fleet and ultra-luxury hotels with underwater restaurants.
In February 2022, Corbin was reunited with Naseem, Manik and Afeef when he visited to join golden jubilee celebrations. The four pioneers reminisced about their early days during a talk show moderated by Tourism
Minister Dr Abdulla Mausoom. There were only two cars in Malé, no motorcycles, no telephones, no banks, no foreign investment or regular flights. The only communication with the outside world was through Morse code to Colombo. Malaria was rampant. Only a few boats were motorised with diesel engines. A UN study in the 1960s dismissed prospects for tourism due to the lack of infrastructure.
The first group of tourists in 1972 stayed in three homes in Malé. But there weren’t enough kitchen utensils for all of them as
Maldivians ate with their fingers. “Afeef and them had to run around with forks and knives. When one house finished eating, they’d take them to the other house,” said Naseem, who now serves as health minister.
Afeef recalled the first meal prepared for the tourists. “We ordered it from Queen of the Night [a famous restaurant]. We had all this hot chicken curry and everything, when we brought them from the airport, laid on the table and nobody touched it. And Mr Corbin said, ‘These guys don’t eat hot [spicy] food!’ So Maniku and I went to the fish market and
bought some fish and Mr Corbin was showing us how to boil and make dinner for the group that night.”
Afeef also remembered a time when it started raining while they were carrying tourists from Kurumba to the airport on a boat without cover: “We told all the guests to lie down on the deck. All the luggage and suitcases were there. We put the tarpaulin on top of them and we were standing on four corners so the tarpaulin wouldn’t [blow away]!”
Development stages
The pioneers identified three main phases of the multi-million dollar tourism industry: the basic stage at the beginning, the upgrading of resorts to five-star properties, and the arrival of international hotel chains. After the early success, foreign tour operators who wanted prices to remain low opposed the transition to high-end tourism.
“They said why do you want to build a swimming pool, there is a big swimming pool all around the island. But once we built it, everybody was in it,” observed Afeef, chairman of Crown Company.
“From US$23 dollars we went up to US$150 to US$200,” M.U. Manik explained
his decision to renovate Kurumba with new restaurants and modern amenities, a trend that other resort operators soon followed.
“The product image and product quality has come up and this is where the big change took place,” he added.
In the next phase, international brands like Hilton and Sheraton taught professionalism and human resource management.
Investment by multinational hospitality giants was a vote of confidence in the Maldives and “put us on the map,” suggested Manik, chairman of Universal Enterprises.
All four pioneers are confident that the tourism industry will continue to grow.
Corbin believes the United States is an untapped market. At present, the Maldives
is promoted as a honeymoon destination but more Americans would visit for fishing, diving and water sports. “We’re talking of a country of 365 million people, out of which 60 million travelled abroad in 2019 - as tourists, not as business [travellers] - so the potential is huge,” he said.
“The next 50 years is yours. If you can keep the momentum going, it’s up to you,” Manik told the university students in the audience.
“Don’t stop dreaming,” Afeef urged the young people as Naseem added, “Best of luck for the next 50 years!”

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands
We take a peek at floral arrangements in one of the country’s glitziest resorts, the Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands. Fresh flowers play a crucial role in the Ritz-Carlton experience, as their Florist Ajja Ajwad notes, adding positivity and a touch of refinement to all spaces. The flowers are flown in fresh from the Netherlands twice a month – it takes a lot to look this pretty, as you will see.
1
Here is Ajja working on brightening up a wedding. These ceremonies require extra care to stick with the order, and Ajja often waits breathlessly for feedback from the newlyweds. It has never been negative, so far.
At the Bedouin-inspired Arabesque, Ajja uses dried flowers to tap into that Lebanese vibe and supplement the restaurant’s warm colour palette. This arrangement might escape notice for it blends in so well, and deserves appreciation if spotted.
3
Ajja’s love for the charm and elegance of cymbidium orchids come through in her display here at the arrival pavilion. It is a windy corner of the resort so Ajja has to improvise – she comes up with glass vases to house the flowers and accompany the driftwood sculpture.

Tulips are symbolic of the source of the flowers and they happen to be Ajja’s favourite. They enliven this decorative display for a new year’s gala dinner. The process was time consuming, the tulips’ petals needed to be flexed individually but, see, the effort was worth it.
The spider chrysanthemum and allium bulbs decorate The Estate’s dining table, the stateliest villa at the resort. This winsome combination of bright green and purple is arresting, while the tall stems add a dramatic element to the scene.Hawwa Ajfan Ajwad (Ajja)
Ajja is fearless in the pursuit of her passions even in the face of adversity. She went against the wishes of her family to follow her heart in hospiality. After stints at prominent local and international chains, she is now in a pivotal position at one of the most luxurious brands in the world – the Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands. We have a chat about her career, her time as a radio host, and how her role at the Ritz informs the hotel’s sense of place.
Hotel Insider: You were in media before hospitality, you did voiceovers and at one point you were a radio host. It’s an interesting line of work. Could you talk about the experience and what led you to it?
Ajja: Originally, I wanted to be a surgeon so I chose the science stream when I did my O’Levels. I didn’t really feel too connected to what I was learning though and it didn’t really go too well for me. I come from an artistic background, my uncle is Naushad Waheed. So, I guess I have a creative streak somewhere in me.
I listened to a lot of radio back then, FM especially. So, I told my parents I wanted to be a radio host. And after I had finished school, I got a chance to do a voiceover for an English audio drama for an FM channel. It was my first and Shimry gave me the chance. Then we had a little explosion of radio stations, Dhi FM, the country’s first private radio station and Capital Radio. I got a chance to do a request show during lunch time, in English language. We had a website where the listeners could chat and it was not only Maldivians living here, but from everywhere in the world.
Hotel Insider: What did you like most about it?
Ajja: I loved the fact that I could sit behind a mic, unknown, and send my voice out to a huge audience. People are so much less judgmental when it’s just a voice. And sometimes, I’d get comments about my show from people who don’t know it’s me! That was thrilling.
Hotel Insider: Then you embarked on a career in hospitality. How did you make that decision, and what’s made you stick with it?
Ajja: I never thought I’d end up working in a resort or in tourism. It was quite by chance. We didn’t have the freedom to explore our interests much back then and I was 21 when I started out in hospitality. My job as a hostess was in Vilamendhoo in Ari Atoll and it took me six months to convince my parents to let me go for a year. And I never went back [laughs]!
It was a bit scary initially, because I was working with a lot of older people. It took me a while to adapt to my role. But I was able to do so many things because of my line of work.
I explored local islands, I went to my mum’s island Dhigu Rah for the first time too. And I learned to swim and swam with a whale shark, I was afraid at first. Plus, I don’t think I could ever get bored of sunsets, I’m that kind of person. All these reasons I guess, and many more, including getting to meet new people from different places and walks of life.
Hotel Insider: You were handling front office operations not too long after. What was the most challenging part of it?
Ajja: Dealing with guest complaints. I know it’s very trite but it’s all about listening. And you don’t have to take a complaint as just a complaint. It’s an opportunity to turn an experience around for your guest.
Let me give you an example. I got a complaint from a guest once, there was an insect in her room. So, I took special note, and I tried to make it up to her. I got to know her a little and found out that she wanted to stargaze.
So, one night we turned off the lights of all the villas near her and she had a perfect view of the night sky. I also helped her find great snorkelling spots. So, at the end of the stay, she was really ecstatic and actually cried.
Hotel Insider: That’s really impressive. We also see that you’ve had quite a bit of experience with pre-openings. Would you recommend it to someone passionate about hospitality?
Ajja: It’s a must because it is a completely different, and I’d say life-altering experience. You’re not doing just your job, you need to be completely devoted to the project because you will be wanted in different departments. I don’t think I learned as much as quickly anywhere else.
It’s also a very emotional, and emotionally rewarding, experience when the project is done. Opening days were full of emotion for
me and the teams I’ve worked with.
Hotel Insider: Also, you’ve been a butler at several properties. Maybe you could tell us a bit about that.
Ajja: Well, let me put it this way. It’s like making someone close to you smile. You are the point of contact for a group of people. You do everything for them. You want them to feel good throughout their stay and you have a huge say in that. Like, most of the time, guests have very little understanding about the Maldives, and they ask me what life is like here. I let them know what life is like in the city and on the islands, I tell them stories that I heard from my grandma. I make them little gifts to take home. It’s about knowing people really intimately, you know? And I loved the experience.
Hotel Insider: And here you are now, at the Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands as a florist. How did you end up here, and how does the work you do inform the sense of place at the Ritz-Carlton?
Ajja: My leader at JW Marriott actually told me I should apply for it. She was extremely supportive. I also want to note the encouragement I received from the artistbrothers Shaff and Shammu Oceans and I really appreciate them pushing me to study and grow. I did a lot of research, delved into Ikibana [Japanese art].
So, I got the mood board of the late Kerry Hill [Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands architect] and while I was in quarantine, I studied it a lot, and found out how to fit in to my art not only the moods but also the ethos of the Ritz-Carlton, which is about simplicity and sustainability.
Fresh flowers are very important at the property, at any Ritz-Carlton hotel or resort, and it’s not just about placing some nice flowers in a vase. It is deeper, informed not only by aesthetics but also by the values of the hotel. And they loved my take on it.
Hotel Insider: Thank you, Ajja. It was a real pleasure.
Kash Izydorczyk
We fly up to Soneva Fushi to have a chat with Kash Izydorczyk who heads Soneva Namoona. Kash is an expert in the areas of education, facilitation and working with young people and has years of experience in teaching, coaching basketball, and managing summer schools. We talk briefly about her career and focus on Soneva Namoona, a programme with big aims for the atoll and the country at large.
Hotel Insider: We notice that you have worked with children early in your career, you were also a secondary school teacher in the Maldives.
Kash: Yes, I was up north in Kulhudhuffushi at Afeefuddin School and I really enjoyed my time there. It made me want to stay in the Maldives actually.
Hotel Insider: Education and teaching are very close to your heart.
Kash: Yes, I have an academic background in education. I’ve also worked with children and young people extensively, since I was a young person myself, coaching basketball since the age of sixteen. I’ve run summer camps, which I thoroughly enjoy as it is a setting where you can have a direct impact and see results. Providing that kind of safe space for young people to find out who they are and think about their own potential is something very valuable in my opinion.
In the Maldives, I am working on a project called Flying Fish Leadership, which provides exactly that type of space for young people to reflect on their values and dreams, while developing their personal and community leadership skills. Our pilot programme took place in September in Haa Alif Atoll and my hope is that we will empower and inspire many more young people across the Maldives.
Hotel Insider: We’d also like to know what drew you to the Soneva Namoona Programme.
Kash: Well, I had the opportunity to be here while the Sustainability Symposium was held back in 2019, when the strategising to address the problem of single-use plastics and ocean plastics took place. It was very interesting but I left for Canada soon after to work at an off-the-grid adventure school. Sonu contacted me when he knew I was looking at
returning to the Maldives with the Flying Fish Leadership project as he wanted to support the programme. He explained that Soneva Namoona was launched and told me all about the project at the time. The more I learned about it, the more it appealed to me. Soon after, I accepted my dream job as the Director of Soneva Namoona. Soneva Namoona has three components: reduce, recycle and inspire, and we have dedicated people heading each of the workstreams. I oversee the operations of the NGO, however, more specifically, within the Inspire component, there is a significant educational piece where I can offer some of my expertise, which thrills me. For me, all three components fit well and really integrate into a meaningful strategy – the notion of spreading awareness so that you reduce waste and have less waste to manage. To do all this, you need to have an idea of how waste impacts everything from our personal experience to global impacts.
Hotel Insider: What are you contributing to it?
Kash: [Laughs] Well, Fehi Madharusaa is a project I am working very closely on. It is in partnership with the Ministry of Education and National Institute of Education (NIE). Fehi Madharusaa is a framework for schools to incorporate environmental education into their ethos. On the one side, you have teachers informing students of environmental issues and the importance of climate change in every subject at every level. While, in parallel Fehi Teams, made up of passionate students and teachers, implement whole school activities incorporating the aims of the program: to reduce the environmental footprint of the school, to increase eco-literacy and to promote climate prosperity (the four themes for activities are: waste, ocean, island
and innovation). This whole school approach to environmental education is about being resourceful to promote ‘Fehi Values’ (green values) at every level – individual (me), group (we), governance (policy) and deep conscience (mentality).
Hotel Insider: So what would be your ideal outcome?
Kash: For Fehi Madharusaa, the ideal outcome would be that every school in the Maldives becomes a Fehi Madharusaa. That means every school in the Maldives reduces their environmental footprint and takes waste seriously. It means that we all increase our understanding of the importance of the relationship between us, our behaviour and our environment. Also, there’s promoting climate prosperity to ensure that the young people who are in school currently are ready for a new type of world and craving more skills and knowledge to be able to support a changing environment.
For Soneva Namoona NGO, our work is our commitment to tackling the single-use plastic problem in the Maldives by working together to empower zero waste communities. Currently we are working directly with 11 island councils and communities on reducing single use plastics by promoting alternatives; establishing more sustainable waste management practices and nurturing environmental stewardship. Recently we become the strategic and technical consultant to the Noonu Atoll Council on implementing the Namoona Sustainable Waste Management Model at an atoll-level. The ideal outcome for our NGO is to see empowered zero waste communities across the entire country, every island becoming a Namoona island.
Hotel Insider: Thank you, Kash for a really good chat.
"I accepted my dream job as the Director of Soneva Namoona. Soneva Namoona has three components: reduce, recycle and inspire, and we have dedicated people heading each of the workstreams."
