Thoyyib Mohamed

We sat down with Thoyyib Mohamed, the MD of MMPRC, and had a chat about the corporation’s work over the past year and what it will focus on in 2020. We learned that roadshows are going to play a major part in MMPRC’s marketing efforts, as will increased digital and social media campaigns.

Infrastructure needs to keep up with the pace of tourism development and present challenges currently, as have concentrated tourism development in Male’ Atoll over the last few years. Meanwhile, the Maldives enjoys a popularity and presence like never before and with these come opportunities.

Hotel Insider: So, let’s start with the main focus of MMPRC for the coming year.

Thoyyib Mohamed: I think for now, we need to kickstart our marketing efforts. We did a performance audit when we took over last year and we found many areas that require improvement. We can’t address everything all at once, obviously, so we’ve prioritised and decided on conducting activities in different parts of the world.

Marketing activities, that is – short term events that will produce results quickly. We’ve increased travel trade fairs, and, after a brief hiatus, we’ve resumed roadshows. We’ve planned to have more of them [roadshows] in markets that are showing potential. We’ve conducted a lot of online campaigns this year and we hope to do more in 2020, with the likes of Tripadvisor, Agoda – a significant number of guests book online so these platforms cannot be ignored. A great part of our budget will be devoted to effective online campaigning next year.

Hotel Insider: It’s a good time to increase marketing efforts because resorts are reporting drops in year-round occupancy rates. And more resorts are in the pipeline. What do you think is going to happen to occupancy rates then?

Thoyyib Mohamed: Every property has to put in the effort to market themselves, it’s very competitive now, and you have to do a lot more to stand out. There’s no scarcity any more. People all over the world are imitating the Maldives now, be it Dubai or the Caribbean. So, as the world changes, there’s a responsibility on behalf of individuals to put in the time and effort [in marketing their property]. As for us, we have an obligation to ramp-up our marketing efforts because we have a considerable budget. And the government puts a lot of emphasis in working with the private sector when promoting the destination. We’ve had two major brainstorming sessions with marketeers from the private sector, one of which was held last month [November]. And we’ve produced the marketing plan for next year based on our consultations with these marketeers.

And like you’ve said, we’ve seen a huge increase in bed capacity because we worked without a masterplan. And previously, we’ve seen developments far beyond Male' Atoll, all under a plan to increase tourism presence in the outer atolls. This gave investors confidence to invest in these developments. But then we saw the islands and lagoons of

"I think we’re going

to see even more Chinese tourists coming in, there’s interest in our destination but the issue is the bottleneck created by the airport."

Male' Atoll being sold and developed without any consideration, and now the entire model has changed. These are challenges. We’re going to have to overcome them and we will. The Maldives, as a destination, as a brand, is enjoying a popularity the likes of which we haven’t seen. So, with that will come opportunity.

Hotel Insider: We also wanted to talk about the Chinese market. Chinese outbound tourism is on the rise globally with 166 million trips out of the country reported this year. And first quarter results from the tourism ministry look promising. What do you think is happening with the Chinese market?

Thoyyib Mohamed: I think we’re going to see even more Chinese tourists coming in, there’s interest in our destination but the issue is the bottleneck created by the airport. That’s a big challenge and that needs to be addressed quickly. Because there are so many airlines that want a slot at Velana International Airport. Like I’ve said, we’ve made huge gains in visibility and popularity abroad. People want to come but they have no means, connectivity-wise. And when they do get here, internal transport has so many issues, with seaplanes not being able to stick to schedules because of congestion. There are a lot of infrastructure issues – our infrastructure needs to keep up with the pace of tourism development.

When you consider a nearby destination like India, which is performing extraordinarily now, it’s greatly because of connectivity. There are several regular carriers from different cities, and they have a couple of budget airlines, so it’s easy for people to travel here. There are issues for long-haul carriers and for South East Asian carriers. They still don’t have the opportunity.

Let me get back to China again. There’s a billion people there and only a fraction of them visit the country. There is great potential still, and we still haven’t fully tapped into the very high-end Chinese travel market. But in addition to our infrastructural development, a lot depends on the stability of the political climate when it comes to Chinese guests. If the government issues a directive declaring the Maldives is unsafe, they won’t come here.

Hotel Insider: You’ve said one reason the Indian market is performing so well is because of connectivity.

Thoyyib Mohamed: Yes, but we’ve also increased our marketing efforts in India –you’d see the Maldives advertised in cinemas, in social media, and we’re working with

different Indian airlines. It’s the same with China, we have teamed up with the Chinese in 11 major cities to promote the Maldives. And we’ve partnered with Singapore Airlines and Air Asia, with the former, we’re working in around nine markets. It’s not just connectivity, there’s a lot going on in terms of increasing presence and visibility of the brand Maldives.

Hotel Insider: I’d also like to talk about the US market, which is now in our top ten. They have similar sorts of destinations nearby with the Caribbean countries, but why do they take ultra-long-haul flights to come here?

Thoyyib Mohamed: It’s all about creating a demand and being visible. Once there’s demand for a place, people will do whatever it takes to get there. A twenty-four-hour flight is nothing when at the end of it, they arrive at their dream destination. We’ve worked with a lot of PR firms and travel magazines in America and it’s showing, we’re seeing results. Americans travel after making plans months beforehand. It’s the same with Europeans. And if they like the product, they’ll keep on coming.

Also, people’s travel habits have changed, they want experiences. It’s all about experiential travel now. They want to experience a mangrove or bicycle through a forest, they want to taste an authentic Maldivian meal, to mingle with the locals, see how toddy is made. They account for over 70 per cent of travellers. This is what research has revealed. They care about sustainability, they want to give back to the local economy, they want local arts and crafts. That’s how most Americans, Europeans and even those from Asian countries travel now.

Also, we’ve seen a rise in solo travellers, especially in the short-haul market. They want an escape from their environment for short periods, several times a year. The patterns are changing, like I’ve said.

Hotel Insider: All right. Before we part, what are your thoughts on the Middle Eastern market? We’ve heard that Israel is performing exceptionally well.

Thoyyib Mohamed: We’ve seen a year-onyear increase in the Israeli market, it’s a great place with a lot of potential, for both high-end and budget tourism options. And the Middle East, of course, is one of the high-yield markets. But it’s hard to tap into them because of visa restrictions [for Maldivians] but we’re making progress.

Hotel Insider: Thank you, Thoyyib, it’s been very insightful.

UNDP Maldives

Youth – Leaders of Tomorrow

For a nation, the value of its natural and cultural heritage goes beyond just the geography or physical spaces but is a representation of the stories that have travelled through generations. It is closely knitted with the nation’s history, tradition and identity thereby making efforts to preserve the natural and cultural heritage necessary and significant.

A great asset to these efforts is the youth. Young people have a significant role to play in the preservation of natural and cultural heritage as the leaders and decision-makers of tomorrow. The future of these places will depend largely on the decisions and actions of the present generation of young people. For this reason, it is important that young people are equipped with leadership skills, critical thinking, civic responsibility along with cultural awareness and knowledge. Youth Leadership Programme (YLP), a 5-day training programme aims to do just this. This programme which targets promising Maldivian youth between the ages of 18 to 25, aims to build capacities through awareness, education and empowerment. It seeks to inspire participants to become agents of change thereby creating a strong base of future leaders in the community.

During the first week of September 2019, UNDP Maldives in partnership with Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment conducted this year’s Youth Leadership Programme in Addu City known for its long history and culture. The participants engaged in a diverse selection of informative sessions facilitated by related organizations and advocates. Some of the key areas covered in these sessions include human rights, politic and governance, culture and heritage, climate change and conservation, gender, first-aid and self-awareness, and health. The sessions also covered personal

If you would like to learn more about how you can work with UNDP to support communities and jointly take Climate Actions, please follow link http://www.makemyisland.mv

development skills with specific sessions on leadership, communication, decision making and respecting diversity.

A key focus of the camp was to instill civic responsibility in young people and increase their participation in the community. Accordingly, each day of the camp began with a meaningful community service such as planting trees or cleaning the beach. The ultimate goal was sustained youth participation in the community that would go beyond the camp. Building strong links between the young and the old of the society was identified as important to reach this goal. Accordingly, the young participants and the elderly “Community Champions” got to exchange inspirational stories and valuable lessons during one of the sessions in the camp.

Another important aspect to community service was the conservation and preservation of both natural and cultural heritage which is particularly significant to islands such as Addu city which is on the path of development. The diverse mixture of ancient cultural heritage and natural beauty the island offers is a valuable resource that should be preserved. During the course of the camp, the participants got the opportunity to experience this through visits to Mathikilhi Eco Garden and Addu Meedhoo Koagannu Cemetery where they learned about the history and story of these places.

Years into the past, Mathikilhi area once was a collection of freshwater lakes which have

turned into wetlands over the years except for one. Two young men from Meedhoo with the help of others who later joined the cause took it upon them to save the last remaining. Thanks to the effort and hard work of these champions; Mathikilhi area now known as Mathikilhi Eco Garden is conserved along with the last lake and is one of the first wetland gardens in Maldives. The picturesque scenery and the breathtaking natural beauty that the place offers is a testimony to the inspirational story of how individual initiatives can go a long way.

As for the Koagannu Cemetery, it is the most ancient cemetery in the Maldives, built 900 years ago to bury the first Muslims of Addu. It also is said to have the largest tombstones in the country. The story goes that the cemetery is the resting place of several historical figures. Whether they inspire you or leave you astounded, such natural and cultural heritage and its stories are a valuable part of our history and identity. For this reason it needs to be preserved and conserved. Encouraging involvement of youth in these efforts will be an effective way of achieving this. As it holds, the best way to appreciate one’s heritage is to share it with others. So let us share these stories with not just the young generation of today but the entire world and let the cycle continue.

In the Boardroom

Mohamed Rafiu

Hotel Insider sits down with Mohamed Rafiu, the managing director of Ostrava Pvt Ltd, a company dedicated to providing workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the construction and hospitality industries.

Ostrava is also the sole distributor of several renowned brands, supplying safety-related products that are tested for quality and fulfills ISO, ANSI and EN standards. We talk about its wide range of products, workplace safety and how Ostrava can help new properties in safety-related matters.

Hotel Insider: Ostrava sells really good gear, and you're not just about safety, you're about making people look stylish as well as safe. Let's talk about this for a bit.

Mohamed Rafiu: Ostrava mainly supplies PPE and Workwear, and among the PPE products, the widest range is in safety shoes. In the industries who use these products, the workers are young, energetic people. So, instead of the stiff safety shoes that were commonly used in the past, they look for stylish products. Also, young people who work in the private sector want to wear nice-looking work attire. So the younger generations look for nice-looking products without compromising safety. At Ostrava, we have over a hundred varieties of safety shoes. Different sectors require different products. For example, chefs, electricians, welders or fire fighters, require different kinds of protective attire. And so, customers look for comfort, safety and style that’s affordable without compromising safety.

Hotel Insider: Can you also talk a little about the process behind choosing your gear? What do you look for? What do you avoid?

Mohamed Rafiu: Mainly we look for everything that’s required by the relevant

industries. We also stock products that people don’t buy regularly to complete the full range even if there isn’t much demand for it. So, for those, we stock a small quantity. But for products that are high in demand, we always try to maintain the stock. There might be times, though, when the stock gets depleted because of big, unexpected orders. Something else that we consider is ensuring that we always keep stock for regular customers, even if they buy just one particular product from us. Another is, we ensure that the usual gear like safety shoes, helmets, boiler suits, raincoats are stocked in large quantities. Because the norm here is that people will buy raincoats when it starts raining. So, if we didn’t have it at the time and had to order it, the rainy season would have passed by the time we get them. We get our products from Europe, so it takes time to get here, and the customer might not want to wait that long. So, it’s important that we maintain the stock. And, if we get negative feedback from customers about a product, we try to not sell them anymore. In those cases, we’ll communicate with the supplier to solve the issue, and we try to discontinue selling the product. There are some that we discontinued because of customer complaints. Also, there are some products that have an expiry date, like fall protection gear. So, we have to check those too.

Hotel Insider: There are rules in place that make it mandatory for workers to have adequate protection in their workplace. Do you see any gaps in safety though, especially in the resort and

17 Hotel Insider

In the Boardroom

"At Ostrava, we have a comprehensive range of workwear. If a product is urgently needed, even if it’s just one item, we can deliver it immediately, and we have done that."

construction sectors?

Mohamed Rafiu: The regulations are in place but they are not being enforced. The norm here is that, when something happens, everyone would consider it a serious issue for a while but then they will forget about it. I often see construction workers in high rise buildings working without any fall protection gear, or workers laying concrete foundations without safety shoes, and they are not wearing helmets or gloves. It’s a common sight in Male’. So even if there are regulations, I don’t think everyone obeys the rules. But now, most companies prioritise safety, and there are some companies who use all types of safety gear. There might be some products that are a bit more expensive but you get quality for that price. So, more and more companies are prioritising this.

And as for the resorts, they have a maintenance department, engineering, kitchen, so every resort would require safety equipment, PPEs like ear muffs, welding gear, and chemical masks. And there are many resorts who use all the required safety gear but sadly, there are some who don’t see safety as a priority. For example, recently there was one who said that they don’t require any PPEs. But I don’t think this is true. For resorts also, the issue is, while there are regulations, I think what’s needed is more stringent monitoring. There are some properties who take the initiative and take safety measures on their own, but if left unchecked, people will try to avoid it to cut costs.

Hotel Insider: Let’s talk about your shop in Alikilegafaanu Magu. It's very well stocked and you get such a good range.

Mohamed Rafiu: We used to have a small showroom on Faamudheyri Magu, and we couldn’t display as many products as we wanted to. So now we have a bigger showroom and all the product ranges are displayed there. I think it’s very important for a customer to come and see the products and to check them. That’s the reason we have spent money on such a big show room. It’s not a typical shop where people come in and buy products regularly. The whole point of the showroom is to meet with customers and give them information about the products.

Hotel Insider: We're witnessing a boom in the resort and construction sectors, fuelled by new openings. Do you see opportunity here for Ostrava to grow? How can Ostrava help out new properties in safety-related matters?

Mohamed Rafiu: Our products are mainly used by the construction industry; PPEs and workwear. So, if the industry is booming, there will be more demand. As those

industries grow, we are expecting to see more growth on our side as well. In the hospitality industry, too, if there are more resorts being constructed, there will be more demand for these products at the construction stage and at the operations stage. PPEs will be required at the construction stage and during operation as well.

It used to be that most resorts would procure their products from overseas. The main reason being that good products or enough stock aren’t available. For example, chef uniforms are always shipped from overseas, but if they were to do that, they would have to order a large quantity, and it takes time to reach them. At Ostrava, we have a comprehensive range of workwear. If a product is urgently needed, even if it’s just one item, we can deliver it immediately, and we have done that. There was this instance where a resort asked us to send a chef uniform on the 12am transfer, and we opened the showroom and we were able to do that. We have even worked on Fridays and made sure urgent items were delivered. So, if it’s available from a local business, resorts would have advantages like these too.

We can supply PPEs and workwear as needed. Usually resorts have a supply boat that make regular trips. Our biggest advantage is that we have PPEs and workwear under one roof. A lot of time would be wasted buying one item from one shop and one from another. And we are reliable. If the relationship with our customer is good, we supply products on credit. We’ve had bad experiences too, so if the payments take too long, we might have to change the credit policy. But if the payments are regular, we can supply products on credit as well. That’s an advantage for new resorts. If they require a specific item that others usually don’t buy, we can stock them as well.

Hotel Insider: Lastly, where do you see Ostrava in the next five years.

Mohamed Rafiu: There are other industries related to PPEs and workwear, so it’s possible that in the future we could stock other related product ranges. We are selling workwear at the moment so we might stock professional workwear in the future, the full range. Plus, PPEs are always changing with new technologies, so the range could change. For example, we didn’t have all the fall protection gear in the beginning but now we have a complete range. So, I’m predicting that we can provide all the required workwear in the next five years. It’s also possible that we open a new showroom in the future.

Hotel Insider: Thanks a lot, Rafiu. It’s been a real pleasure.

Word from the top

Alexandre Glauser

A man with a deep affection for Asia, Alexandre Glauser heads Amari Havodda Maldives in the stunning Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Experienced in Thai hospitality, he is also no stranger to our neighbour Sri Lanka, having opened two properties on the island back-to-back.

Alex loves to dive and snorkel, and believes the pristineness of this southern atoll is unrivalled. And that being far away from the centre of activity is actually a good selling point.

Hotel Insider: You've been with ONYX Hospitality Group since 2014, you were area general manager overseeing two OZO properties, one in Colombo and one in Kandy. OZO is quite trendy in Lanka and I hear they're opening a property in the Maldives soon. I'd like to know what drew you to the ONYX Group [who owns OZO and Amari].

Alexandre Glauser: Well, actually it was a matter of convenience. I was working for Centara Hotels and Resorts – I was based in Thailand. The company sent me to Sri Lanka to do two openings back-to-back. One in the west side, Bentota, a well-established destination. Another in Passikudah, an upand-comer. And once the two hotels opened up for business, our owners were very happy and I was supposed to go back to Thailand. But then, I was approached by Thailand-based ONYX Hospitality Group who wanted me to oversee the newly opened OZO in Colombo and also initiate the opening of an OZO property in Kandy. And since my daughter was in school in Sri Lanka, I thought it was

a good idea to stay in the country. And also, as my background is in resorts and leisure, I felt it would be good to take on a city hotel to expand upon my expertise.

Hotel Insider: And now here you are at another Onyx property. What I find about Amari is that it doesn’t go overboard on luxury. Everything’s there, of course, but it’s all very simple.

Alexandre Glauser: Amari is a truly Asian brand that embraces the best of contemporary Thainess, we really want our guests to feel comfortable here. You’re right, it’s not overthe-top, but there’s a very strong focus on quality. In that regard, we really monitor guest satisfaction at every point of the stay –before, during and after. All our properties in Thailand always score very high in terms of guest satisfaction. Amari is a brand that really focuses on what’s essential, where people can be themselves. We have a very strong sense of Asian hospitality. Like with Amaya, our main restaurant, it’s got a street-food concept that showcases the flavours of Asia. In short, Amari Havodda Maldives is a very fresh and contemporary Asian property.

Hotel Insider: Speaking of food, a lot of travellers are turning into foodies while some are becoming very sensitive about what they eat.

Alexandre Glauser: One way we try to help

21 Hotel Insider

our guests out is by showing the ingredients in our food, we ensure that they’re labelled, so if someone’s sensitive to gluten for example, they’ll know what to avoid. A resort’s food and beverage experience is obviously very important, now more than ever. I tell my team that everyone has three meals a day. If a guest stays a week, that’s 21 meals. So, F&B is a vital part of a guest’s experience. And here, we’re trying to please a variety of palates, since we welcome guests from all corners of the world. We focus on offering the most authentic meals and that’s possible because of our multinational team.

Hotel Insider: All right. Hoteliers say a hotel is only as good as its service – if a two-star property can deliver five-star service that can be a gamechanger. From the comments I’ve read, one area where you do go overboard is service.

Alexandre Glauser: Thank you. What us hoteliers in the Maldives have to bear in mind is that holidays are very special for our visitors. Some often save up for a long period so that they can have this sort of luxury. We have honeymooners whose stays are paid for by their relatives. We’re an aspirational and premium destination. We have a huge responsibility to ensure that people are having a great experience throughout their stay.

Here, we have a service culture where we want our team members to be able to approach the guests and deliver personalised service. We have something called ‘Amari Host’, which is in place at all Amari properties. Each guest is assigned a host who will be looking after them throughout their stay. So, the guests know that they have a contact point. An Amari Host regularly checks up on the guest so if there’s any issue, we can address it on the spot. And in spite of being a young hotel, we have a very healthy level of repeat guests.

Hotel Insider: You’re also blessed with a great location, it’s only a fifteen-minute hop from Kaadedhdhoo airport but still very remote. You don’t see planes flying overhead. You don’t get speedboats cutting across the sea. The tranquillity here is hard to match.

Alexandre Glauser: I’m glad you think so. Yes, I believe we’re in a special place. It’s the largest atoll, not just in the Maldives but also in the world, in terms of the number of islands. We have 255 islands here, and not even a dozen of them are resorts. So, it’s really pristine and untouched – a true Maldivian paradise, like the way the islands used to be. And moving forward, we need to be conscious of how we position the property – we have a wonderful island in an equally wonderful atoll. And both their futures are bright. I don’t see us becoming a mass-tourist destination, we are committed to offering beautiful experiences and memories to people for decades and generations to come.

Hotel Insider: Yes, we need to consider preserving the atoll’s nature when planning its development.

Alexandre Glauser: Yes. Our environment is sensitive. We’re doing what we can to preserve it. In fact, most resorts in the Maldives have a strong environmental focus, they’ve come up with initiatives like banning single-use plastics, and protecting marine life like turtles. We’re doing our share, from sorting our garbage to composting and cleaning our reef on a regular basis. We’re also seriously considering solar power - installing PV panels in the resort.

Hotel Insider: That’s great, I really hope you go ahead with your solar plans. And since you mentioned turtles, the snorkelling around here is remarkable. There’s so much life here, you see sharks and turtles so often it’s almost guaranteed.

"We really have an exceptional setting here. We get a lot of hawksbill and green turtles. They feed on the seagrass near the island. We’ve pledged to keep our seagrass, as you may know."

Alexandre Glauser: Yes, we really have an exceptional setting here. We get a lot of hawksbill and green turtles. They feed on the seagrass near the island. We’ve pledged to keep our seagrass, as you may know. I’m an avid diver and snorkeller. And it makes me very happy that more guests have really come to appreciate the unique beauty of our island. Hotel Insider: Lastly, does being so far away from the action adversely affect the business?

Alexandre Glauser: It depends on the season and on how you position the property. During high season, for the traditional long-haul market, I’d say no. But, during low season, for shorter stays, it can. We have a lot of FAM trips to educate our business partners on the sort of property that we are, our uniqueness, and I think it really helps when they experience it for themselves. We have to make sure we position it to the growing community of travellers worldwide who appreciate the delicate beauty of our island and environment, too, and I think that is key.

Emerging Markets

The Maldives’ tourism began in the early 1970s with a clientele of almost exclusively Europeans. As it blossomed over the decades into an a premier high-end destination, Europe remained the main intbound market and the industry was designed to cater to affluent visitors from the continent.

Hotel Insider 24

The composition of tourist arrivals started shifting in the wake of the 2008 global economic recession. With sharp downturns in developed economies, tourists stayed put or preferred travelling to destinations closer to home. Arrivals to the Maldives plummeted in 2009, declining -4% compared to the previous year.

A decade ago, the UK remained the top source market followed by Italy and Germany. But in a sign of the shifting sands, the Chinese market overtook France and Russia and moved up to 4th position with a market share of 9.2%.

The rise and fall of the Chinese market

With its rapid urbanisation, rising disposable incomes, and relaxation on restrictions on travel, China has become the number one outbound tourist market in the world.

According to the annual Maldives Visitors Survey, beach was the key motivator for Chinese holiday-makers who came to the Maldives. The majority of travellers were honeymooners and those seeking rest and

relaxation. Over 70 percent of Chinese visitors were between 25-34 years.

After a sharp decline following the 2004 tsunami, the Chinese market saw steady growth over the following years. Direct flights to major Chinese cities were introduced in 2010 and the number of arrivals increased exponentially. Its market share went up dramatically from 4.4% in 2006 to 15% in 2010, with a whopping growth of 96% compared to the previous year,

China became the first non-European country to be the top leading market to the Maldives with a total of 118,961 tourist arrivals, outperforming the UK, Germany and Italy. The pattern continued over the following years with robust growth in Chinese arrivals offsetting a decline of European visitors as Western economies recovered from the financial crash.

But the Chinese market peaked in 2014 with about 364,000 arrivals - representing a market share of 30 percent - and lost its momentum in 2015, recording a negative growth of -1.1% for the first time. The drop continued through 2016 and 2017, losing an average of 2.7% of the market shares each

year. Arrivals from China declined by -7.6% in 2018.

Despite the steady decline since 2015, China remained at the top with a market share of 18.1 percent. There have been signs of a reversal of the downward trend this year. Chinese arrivals recorded sharp increases for the Chinese New Year during February. Positive growth was also recorded in June. As of October 2019, Chinese arrivals have grown 1.8 percent compared to the same period in 2018, the first upward tick in four years.

Indians incoming

India is one of the fastest growing outbound tourism markets in the world. The UNWTO estimates that India will account for 50 million tourists by 2020. Despite a slowdown due to rupee fluctuations, the Indian outbound numbers have been growing at an average annual rate of 10-12 percent over the last seven years. This growth is attributed to affordable air travel, a growing consumptiondriven economy, and a large and increasingly affluent middle class. Medical, wellness, adventure and sports tourism as well as

25 Hotel Insider

Cover Story

increased smart phone usage and internet penetration have also been identified as key factors.

Recognising the potential of the Indian market, more than 70 tourist organisations from around the world have set up local offices in India for destination marketing.

India is the Maldives’ closest neighbour and ally but up until recently did not represent a sizeable portion of tourist arrivals. A decade ago, the number of Indian visitors who made the short trip south stood at about 16,000 a year.

After gradual growth over the years, a significant milestone was reached in July 2019 when India became the second largest market for the Maldives tourism industry with a 100 percent growth rate in the first half of the year. The 82,140 Indian holiday-makers recorded by the end of June represented a 10 percent market share. The figure was close to the 90,474 Indian tourists who visited during the whole of 2018. Some 130,617 Indian tourists have visited the Maldives by the end of October 2019.

Industry experts attribute this surge to the popularity with Bollywood celebrities as well as the introduction of low-cost direct flights to the Maldives. The majority of Indian visitors are honeymooners travelling between April and May with a surge in December.

Tapping into this promising market, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation has been conducting roadshows

in major Indian cities such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi and Chandigarh.

USA – tourists from the farthest corner of the world

According to Google, Maldives was the number one searched destination in the United States. The US is one of the fastest growing markets for the Maldives, making its way to the top ten list for the first time in 2016. Since then, the US market has seen double-digit growth over the years. In 2019, American arrivals increased by 28.6 percent, up 3.1 percent compared to last year. The US remains the 8th largest source market to the Maldives.

The US outbound travel saw a growth of 170% between 1996 and 2016. Over the following two years, more Americans travelled outside the US than ever before, spurred by a growing economy, favourable exchange rates, and high consumer confidence. According to data published by the National Travel and Tourism Office, the number of outbound travellers spiked by 6 percent last year, reaching 93 million. Of those, 45 percent flew to overseas destinations. Travellers to European countries increased by 12 percent. Outbound travel to Oceania, South America and Asia also increased.

Industry experts attribute this growth to several factors including tax reform measures, faster wage growth, high consumer

confidence and low unemployment. The US dollar is still relatively strong compared to currency in popular destinations around the world, increasing purchasing power. Surveys conducted by US travel agencies found that people who travel to experience culture is increasing, attributed to ease of travel and access to information. Holiday snaps and reviews on social media play a large role in influencing where people travel to as well.

This year, the top three regions for US outbound travel was Europe, the Caribbeans and Asia. Tourists travelling to Asian countries increased by 4.9 percent compared to last year.

Other markets

The Israeli market has also seen steady uptick, recording a growth of 40.6 percent compared to the previous year. Arrivals from Taiwan increased by 25.7 percent compared to last year. The Korean market also saw an increase of 9.8 percent, as well as Japan with 8.3 percent increase in arrivals this year.

By the end of October, the number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives reached 1.4 million, up 15 percent compared to last year. With the opening of new resorts and the expansion of the airport, this number is expected to further increase in the coming years.

Resort Review

Hurawalhi Island Resort

This resort is a classic Maldivian beauty and our first impressions are immensely favourable. Its public spaces – designed by New York-based architect Yuji Yamazaki – are elegant, light and airy. We love the people here too, they are welcoming, discreet, and quick to help out when needed. Hurawalhi is blessed with an exceptional F&B department. Each day presents a heartstopping spread at the main restaurant Canneli. And every meal boasts an excellent fresh fruit selection (berries, people! On a remote island!). It’s a property worth second, third and fourth visits if you can.

29 Hotel Insider

At the high-ceilinged lobby is a sculpture of a swarm of fish suspended over a weeping black-stone. A picture-perfect pairing of Maldivian and Japanese iconography, and a great introduction to the property.

The Canneli restaurant is a vast, striking space with a peaked wood-and-thatch roof, circular Japanese chandeliers, burnished bronze woks against slate grey tile. The buffets are fantastic – lunch ranges from vegan-friendly sushi, grilled meats and fish, home-made breads, curries and pasta, each holding its own.

Hotel Insider 30

The al-fresco Coco Bar, open throughout the day, offers beach and lagoon vistas and an all-day dining menu. It includes just-baked calzones, pizzas and more with plenty of vegan-friendly options. All-inclusive guests have access to premium alcohol and can choose from classic cocktails to the resort’s own quirky concoctions. And of course, there’s daily entertainment.

Hurawalhi’s a la carte restaurant Kashibo whisks you off to the sunny, humid climes of Asia with its Asian fusion fare. Meanwhile, Junk Food Kitchen (JFK) dishes up some fine gourmet fast food with much to appeal vegans.

At sunset, head over to the Champagne Pavilion at the end of the water villa jetty for a quiet, romantic bubbly with your beloved. Though the small resort has 90 villas, Hurawalhi never feels crowded. And even at eighty per cent occupancy, the bars and restaurant seem like they have barely enough people. It’s an adults-only resort for guests 15 and over, so no raucous children by the poolside. Which suits us just fine.

The resort is eco-conscious, generating up to fifty percent of its daytime power requirements through solar energy. Hurawalhi doesn’t see solar panels as a blemish, in fact, they’re embellishments adorning the top of the walkway to the lobby, providing welcome shade.

Resort Review

Rooms are extremely private and comfy, as befitting a romantic honeymoon destination. They boast a minimal design with dark wood flooring and large glass sliding doors letting in the sun and leading you to the deck and pool. Definitely the place for some downtime. Bathrooms have a clean, pale-grey décor, his-and-hers sinks, a rain-shower. Hurawalhi’s Healing Ocean amenities are a treat, they’re aromatic and leave you feeling squeaky clean and refreshed.

In-room entertainment is excellent – big wide-screen smart TV on which you can binge Netflix in the evenings and Bluetooth supporting soundbars for a night of music. You could spend the entire day in your room perusing in-villa dining, there’s really no need to venture out unless you feel an itch.

What will wow you, though, is obviously the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant, the resort’s pièce de résistance – a bewitching space set in a manicured coral landscape. Feast on marvellous culinary creations by the superb F&B team here and observe how the submarine world around you changes with the passage of the sun. It’s an experience you cannot possibly forget.

Over 900 solar panels are installed on the roofs at the back-of-the-house buildings. These solar panels produce 450kW electricity used in the daily operations providing 30 to 40 per cent of the property’s daytime power needs. Since installation in January 2019, the system has contributed nearly 600MWh (mega-watt hours) to the property saving 158,000L of diesel. 1

Spotlight

Viraj Silva

Hotel Insider sits down with Viraj Silva, the head of sales and marketing at Voyages Maldives to talk about the recent shifts in the major tourist arrival markets, seasonal changes in arrivals, and the factors that influence the numbers.

Hotel Insider: Let’s start with the Indian market. Indians are traveling more and the Maldives is becoming increasingly popular with them. They are now in our top five, and this wasn’t the case a few years ago. What do you think made us popular with the Indians?

Viraj Silva: Yes, the numbers are growing. I can see the reason for that is the aggressive marketing and PR in the Indian market. A lot of resorts are targeting the Indian market as well. Ever since the introduction of direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi, you can see a lot of low-cost carriers operating such as GoAir and IndiGo. And from various cities as well. So, I think that’s the main reason for the boom. The holiday prices are more affordable for the Indian market. Previously it was just Indian Airlines and Srilankan Airlines, where they had to travel for a day, either via Colombo or Bangalore to reach Maldives. Now they can reach here within 3 to 4 hours. So that’s money well spent.

Hotel insider: Up until a few years ago, European markets used to be the top three. Now we are seeing a shift. What do you make of this?

Viraj Silva: I think it’s because of the uncertainty in the region, especially in the UK, because of Brexit. It’s one of the main markets for us. And it’s a very traditional market. An average holiday-maker will plan their holidays well in advance, sometimes it’s six months to one year in advance. But because of this uncertainty in the country, and the weaker pound, everyone is on the fence. Early bookings have changed. Everyone is on hold so we can see a drop there. It might pick up again after Brexit.

Also, external issues like security affect numbers. Incidents like the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka have a bit of an impact on us as well, because there are tour operators who promote twin holidays in Sri Lanka and Maldives. Following the bombings, the UK market completely dropped. And not only the UK but the whole European market as well. Also, a major tour operator, Thomas Cook, shutting down, and unrest in the region, like the strikes in France and Italy, create uncertainty as well. So, to give you a direct answer, I would say it’s because of Brexit and the uncertainty. And there are more last-minute enquiries from the European market than before.

Hotel insider: Are more people going for online bookings and choosing to make their own travel plans rather than booking with a tour operators?

Viraj Silva: For traditional travellers, tour operators are still the safest way to travel. If you book a holiday with a tour operator,

your holiday is secure, and you can get your money back so that security is a factor. But because of the issues that have risen with the tour operators recently, the trust is not that great for the average traveller. And the younger generations are more experience and adventure seekers so they really don’t want someone to plan their trip for them. They don’t want to stick to a particular package that you can buy off the shelf, so they like to design their own itineraries and travel their own way. That must be the reason why there’s more online traffic. If you look at booking. com, you’ll see they have aggressive marketing. Online bookings will increase but surely there’s a market for tour operators too, because of the price factor. That’s very important. And the middle age to older generations still want someone’s assistance with planning their holidays. Brand loyalty is another. For example, Kuoni are exploring different avenues to tap into different kinds of markets, not just the traditional high-end travellers. Although they are tour operators, they have become more flexible. They work more like travel designers than tour operators now. So, there is a huge market for tour operators too.

Hotel Insider: The US market is on the top ten. You would think that with the Caribbean so close, they wouldn’t go for the Maldives. What’s the allure for them? What makes them get on an ultra-long-haul flight to the Maldives?

Viraj Silva: We are seeing a lot of marketing and PR activities from various avenues, from MMPRC as well as individual resorts, which have not been there before. So, the awareness is building. Americans like to experience new destinations. They are willing to travel to faraway places as long as we make the destination attractive to them. That’s the reason why India attracts a lot of Americans. A lot of Americans travel to India just to experience the culture. When we met tour operators in the US, sometimes they didn’t even know where we are [geographically] located. So that awareness wasn’t there. For Maldives, the only other comparison would be French Polynesia. I think now they are getting fed up with the Caribbean and Tahiti so when they look for the next best destinations, Maldives is the next best. Again, the PR and the India-Maldives combination are factors.

And, a lot of international hotel chains have come here in the last few years. All those international brands are well-known in the US market and so they like to choose known brands like, St.Regis, Fairmont, W, Westin.

Millennials and budget-holidays makers, too, like to travel two to three times a year rather than spending on one long-haul holiday. Even

38 Hotel Insider

from Europe, there are travellers who like to experience local culture, food, and others that a destination has to offer. I think that’s the trend. More millennials like to come to local islands and budget holidays.

Hotel Insider: Central and Eastern European markets are promising too. There was significant growth. What are your thoughts on them?

Viraj Silva: We have been seeing an increase there as well. Like Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary. Again, for the guest house sector as well as high end resorts. For two reasons, again, air travel has become cheaper. And because of PR actives, there’s more awareness. Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria are the key countries that have shown an increase in arrivals.

Hotel Insider: The Middle Eastern market is also growing. I’ve heard from a senior industry expert that the Israeli market is particularly attractive with a lot of potential.

Viraj Silva: Of course. It has been there before as well. It’s just that very few travel agents have been concentrating on this market, for various reasons. We can see an increase in cruise-liner travel. There’s a huge cruise market. More cruise liners are coming into Maldives now and you can see a lot of Israeli groups coming in. Even if it’s for one night or excursions, and trips to the resorts. Plus, there are adventure seekers like surfers, so we can see a trend.

Hotel Insider: What are your top markets?

Viraj Silva: Our top markets are Italy, UK, Germany France and Switzerland. We represent lot of tour operators in those areas, and FIT bookings as well. Also, FIT bookings from Middle East and Asia.

Hotel Insider: Lastly, what kind of changes do you see seasonally in different markets?

Viraj Silva: Traditionally, the high season would be November to April while from May to October, we consider as low season. And in between, August is considered a high and shoulder season. But I’ve seen an increase in arrivals in May, when the weather is still nice. And it changes towards June and July, when the rainy season arrives. The rates are much lower in May than in the high season. So, because of that, I have seen an increase in that month. And then again, in October, just before the high season, with good rates and good weather, we have seen numbers increase as well. So, weather conditions are a factor. In December, we are supposed to see nice weather, but it’s raining. So environmental changes have an impact too. I hope it doesn’t change that much seasonally.

Hotel Insider: Thank you, Viraj, for your time. It was an interesting chat.

Travel Trends Spotlight

Indian and South Korean travel trends

As we get ready to welcome the year 2020, there is growing awareness regarding climate change and our carbon footprint. A new generation of travellers are coming of age, and as uncertainty over Brexit increases, more people are re-evaluating how and where they travel to, choosing less familiar destinations and cultural exploration over the crowded hotspots in Europe.

The Condé Nast Traveller predicts that in 2020, naked holidays will become popular with more people choosing nude hikes, camping, cruising, wild swimming and yoga. Vegan hotels are another trend that’s on the rise. Luxury bunks and Spartan holidays that combine a digital detox with minimalist living are predicted to be trendy next year, as well as nomadic hotels and hipster cruises.

Younger generations are choosing adventure and experiential travel over the traditional beach vacations. They are also thinking more carefully about how often and where they fly to.

Here, we look at the travel preferences of Indians and Koreans, two major arrival markets to the Maldives that have been performing well over the last few years.

Indians prefer experiential travel

India is one of the fastest growing outbound travel markets in the world. The UNWTO estimates that India will account for 50 million outbound tourists by 2020. Smart phones, internet access, affordable airfare and an increasingly affluent middle class have contributed to the rapid growth. Indian travellers appear to crave authentic

experiences over luxury, opting for cheaper accommodation to invest more in soaking up a destination’s culture.

According to a survey conducted by yatra. com, more travellers are looking for budgetfriendly holidays at unexplored destinations such as Kyrgyzstan, Bolivia and Ethiopia.

In lieu of booking tour packages, younger travellers often choose to curate their own experiences - on cultural expeditions, culinary tours, wellness journeys and adventure trips. India has seen a rise in the female solo travellers as well.

Older generations have also embraced smart phones and the net, booking trips online and choosing to explore other countries and cultures instead of sticking to travel within the sub-continent.

On arrival-visa and short-haul flights are another draw. According to industry

41 Hotel Insider

Spotlight

experts, there has been a significant increase in outbound travel to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Thailand and the Maldives in the recent years. Short-haul tour packages are popular with millennials who choose to travel on long weekends, tour operators say. Destinations off the beaten track are gaining popularity among this group of travellers, along with personalised itineraries.

‘Four square travel’ is another emerging trend. Tour packages tailor-made to include experiences catered to each member of the family are popular with this group of holidaymakers. A seaside holiday package could also include pub crawls, heritage tours or a visit to a theme park.

Destination weddings and honeymoons have always been popular, however, destination bachelor and bachelorette party trips are a new trend for Indian travellers.

Football fans choose to plan their vacations around the World Cup, choosing to watch the event and to travel around the host country. Thanks to international direct flights and the increase in low-cost airlines, there is a surge in outbound travellers during this season. According to travel agents, sports tourism is on the rise in India.

Social media is a significant influencer. The

Maldives is becoming increasingly popular among Indian holiday-makers. More than 90,000 tourists visited last year. The number of tourists from India increased by 85 percent in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year. Tourism industry experts attribute this hike to the country’s popularity among Bollywood celebrities. Spontaneous travel is another emerging trend. Last year, 45 percent of bookings were last-minute with 7 days of travel.

South Koreans want hassle-free relaxation

Outbound travel from South Korea is booming. In 2018, over 28.7 million Koreans travelled abroad, compared to 26.5 million the previous year.

The majority of travellers opt for tour packages, choosing travel packages for tours around South East Asia. However, “free travel” is gaining popularity among modern, tech-savvy travellers with spending power. The majority of these travellers are gen x and gen z travellers.

According to a market insights report by the Singapore Tourism Board, South Koreans regard traveling as a way of healing; an opportunity to rest and recuperate. They also see travelling as a form of personal

enrichment. Their ideal destinations are ones that are considered relaxing, such as beaches, yet still close enough to the city centre where they can enjoy activities like shopping and sightseeing.

The most popular activities are enjoying nature, relaxation and recreation, and gourmet tours, followed by visits to historical sites, shopping and city tours. South Koreans usually travel during Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and the Luna New Year holidays. As they normally get 5 consecutive days off per year, Korean travellers spend an average of 4.6 days abroad. As such, these travellers like to plan everything in detail beforehand, choosing to read reviews on portal sites. Travel agencies are not a popular source for information; just 30 percent of holiday-makers are reported to use them while over 76 percent of travellers use sites like Naver and Daum to gather information, followed by Google and Facebook. Although fluent in English, South Koreans prefer information in their native language.

The most popular destinations for outbound travel are in South East Asia. According to trip.com, the top destinations for outbound travel include Kalibo, Cebu, Bangkok, Danang, Bali, Taipei, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Working Women

Cluster PR and Communications Manager, LUX* South Ari Atoll and LUX* North Malé Atoll, Maldives Resort & Villas

Mona Sedghi
44 Hotel Insider

Born in Lahore to Iranian parents, Mona Sedghi is no stranger to moving around. Finland was her home, but as a young woman, she worked in Sweden in the music biz, promoting artists. With a background in communication and graphic design, creative arts are dear to her, especially music. And though she is in hospitality, Mona believes she’s essentially doing the same thing – creating experiences for people. A free spirit, she feels at home wherever she goes and believes that knowing your purpose and taking risks are the crucial steps towards success.

Hotel Insider: What's really impressive is that you started out in the music business with Universal Music. You were active in social media promotion, you accomplished quite a bit, managing a campaign for a top artist from Sweden. Can we talk about this for a bit?

Mona Sedghi: Yes, so I started off as an intern for six months, straight after college in 2010. Back then, Facebook was the hottest thing around and a personal hobby of mine, so I focussed a lot in that area. I worked with local artists and promoted them on social media. Graphic design, photography, music, the creative arts have always been close to my heart. I stayed with Universal Music for four years, which was a great start to my career.

Hotel Insider: Then you made a move to Sony Music Entertainment.

Mona Sedghi: Yes, I was with them for five years. It was more a PR and marketing focussed job. I still worked with local artists though, but I was also working with the brand, ensuring brand awareness, reputation and visibility in creative campaigns online. And I was working with the community.

Hotel Insider: The music community?

Mona Sedghi: Well, consumers, fans really. Closing the gap between the label, artists and their fan base. Because with social media you can access your artists so much easier than before, and part of my job was to arrange different events, online and offline, where fans and artists got to meet. That was a superexciting and fun episode of my life, career-wise. A fun ride.

Hotel Insider: Yeah, I can imagine. So, what were you listening to back then?

Mona Sedghi: I’m hip-hop and R&B to the bone, but I listen to pretty much everything. I

believe music is very much connected to how you feel and what you’re going through. Each era of my life so far has covered a genre. I love music but specifically, if I had to choose, I’d listen to R&B and hip-hop, and jazz for the rest of my life [laughs].

Hotel Insider: [laughs] Cool. So, did you have any favourite artists?

Mona Sedghi: No, not really, but God knows I could loop a Beyoncé or Muse album over and over again. I fall in love with the feeling a track gives me rather than the artist. OK, that’s not hundred per cent true. I’ll let Frank Ocean, Rosalía and Beyoncé be the exceptions.

Hotel Insider: Did you get to work with any of them?

Mona Sedghi: I wish! I worked with local artists, Swedish artists. It’s so refreshing to see how the landscape has changed since I first started in the music business. As with any field, the music business included, today anyone can do anything, regardless of what you are practicing. Shout out to all the trailblazers out there who have broken down barriers, and led the way for others to take a seat at the table.

Hotel Insider: Cool. So, after that, you moved to a career in hospitality. A big move.

Mona Sedghi: It’s a big move, but not really. Everybody was like ‘wow, that’s such a big step. It’s going to be very tough, Mona!’ But looking at it, career-wise, PR is PR, it’s essentially the same. Creating is the core of my being. And wherever I go, it is my home.

Hotel Insider: What would you say are the pros of being in hospitality vs the music biz?

Mona Sedghi: It’s not so much ‘versus’, I mean, everything has its pros and cons. For hospitality, the pros would be meeting so many new people in such an international environment, working with so many nationalities, not being put in a box. It’s very dynamic and I think all of that really nurtures my soul. I cannot have a nine-to-five job, it’s just not me. It’s like you’re in it to create something for somebody, much like with music. It’s so close to everyone’s heart, like with travel – we are helping people celebrate life. For so many people, coming to the Maldives is a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list sort of thing, and it’s so rewarding to be part of that.

Hotel Insider: Do you think you might consider a career in music once again or has hospitality won you over?

Mona Sedghi: Not as far as I envision, but you never know. However, certain chapters close and you move on to the next in order to evolve in the direction your heart sings. I learnt something and I gave back. And here I am.

Hotel Insider: Did anyone in your family have a similar career path? Were they into music or any other creative pursuit?

Mona Sedghi: Not really. I’m the youngest of four and I’ve always done my own thing. And my family has always supported me. I’ve just gone wherever my heart led me, always with a clear purpose. I’m very grateful to my parents for understanding that, for letting me find my own thing. My parents are from Iran and they fled the [Iran-Iraq] war in ‘89. My mum was nine-months pregnant with me. We were accepted by Finland and we went via Pakistan. So, I was raised in Finland, but born in Pakistan, and my background is Iranian. I speak Swedish and Farsi fluently but I’m a Finnish citizen.

Hotel Insider: Oh, cool. That’s a pretty strange journey.

Mona Sedghi: [laughs] Yes, it’s a funky mix. I never identified with a country. It might sound strange but I feel I am a citizen of the world. And wherever I am, my home is with me.

Hotel Insider: All right. So, before we part, what would you say to young women who aspire to success?

Mona Sedghi: I think it’s very individual. Success is such a subjective concept. What do you truly believe in? What gets you going? What are your core values? What is your purpose? Let that lead the way. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Blaze the trail and just remember that good things take time, and trust me, you will make a lot of mistakes along the way. Forgive yourself and blossom. That goes for any entrepreneur, any life decision, any revolution. Dare to take risks and surround yourself with people who want the best for you, you will know who they are. And, of course, stay true to that inner voice of yours. And be kind, always.

Hotel Insider: Thanks a lot, Mona. Really enjoyed our chat.

COMO Cocoa Island to re-open in January 2020

The award-winning private island resort COMO Cocoa Island will re-open on January 9 next year following a sevenmonth transformation.

According to the resort, the renovations will further accentuate the island’s away-from-it-all setting. Its dhoni-shaped villas have been refreshed as well. They feature bleached wood with kajan roofs and appear to float on water. Private pools have also been added to many of the villas.

With just 34 over-water villas, a third of the island is dedicated to the island’s wellness centre, the COMO Shambhala Retreat. Drawing inspiration from its surroundings, the treatment pavilions are made with natural wood, traditional Maldivian coral walls and kajan thatched roofs. The treatment rooms offer sweeping views of the lagoon. A new Pilates studio has been added, as well as a state-of-the-art gym and a yoga centre that offers 360 degree views of the island.

To complement the wellness experience, COMO Shambhala Cuisine is available on all menus, allowing guests to pursue wellness diets during their stay. The resort’s Ufaa restaurant features Mediterranean, Indian and local cuisine.

Diving is some of the best in the world in Cocoa with two private house reefs. There is a PADI-certified dive center as

well as UV night snorkeling, whale shark expeditions and complimentary water sports.

Located in South Malé atoll, the island is a 40-minute speed boat ride from the Velana International Airport. Opened

in 2002, Cocoa island was COMO’s first private island in the Maldives. It’s sister property, the family-oriented COMO Maalfiushi opened in 2014.
