LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART Edward Kienholz: Five Car Stud 6 June – 21 October 2012 The Five Car Stud by US artist Edward Kienholz (1927-94) offers a racially charged message in a Mississippi Burning setup. First exhibited at the 1972 Documenta in Kassel, Germany, the art installation has been held in storage at the Japanese museum that owns it until curators from the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, which nurtures a long-standing commitment to American art, brought the installation back onto the art circuit, first at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2011 and now also at Louisiana before its Europe-wide tour.

Franz Marc, Creation, (1914)

The exhibition highlights the dawn of Modernism in Germany and traces artistic interpretations of the concepts of art and Volk (‘people’), taking us through the national craze for Nietzsche’s philosophy of the 1890s to the looming moral and cultural disaster of the 1930s.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF DENMARK Henri Matisse 14 July – 28 October 2012 Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is hailed as one of the great twentieth-century masters for his powerful imagery and masterly rendering of colour and shape. The exhibition at Denmark’s national gallery traces Matisse’s explorative art, in which he would constantly challenge his own artistic vernacular in endless variations of his motifs. The exhibition spans Matisse’s formative periods, from the turn of the century, when his investigative method was first honed, until the late 1940s, by which time he had reached his artistic zenith.

And through her close friendship with photographer Man Ray she also became the muse and model of such avant-garde artists of 1930s Paris (including Surrealists) as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Max Ernst and Joan Miró.

The myth of the Skagen Painters owes much to Norwegian-Danish artist Peder Severin Krøyer (1851-1909), whose retrospective comprising 140 artworks – the largest ever – at the Hirschsprung Collection this spring is now featured at the Skagen Museum in the seaside town that was home to the colony of Naturalist artists. And while Skagen Museum – which is dedicated to the Skagen Painters – hosts the Krøyer exhibition, the Hirschsprung Collection has borrowed a series of masterpieces from the collections of Skagen Museum by other legendary Skagen Painters, including Anna and Michael Ancher, Oscar Björck and Viggo Johansen.

THORVALDSENS MUSEUM Thorvaldsen Museum is not only Denmark’s oldest museum, dating back to 1848, but it also offers one of the nation’s most remarkable museum experiences, featuring the Neoclassical sculptures of Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) in balanced contrast to colour-saturated classical interiors. In addition to the artist’s plaster casts and marbles, the museum also showcases his private art collections. Frieze: Artist Jørgen Sonne’s frieze on the Thorvaldsen Museum façade depicts Bertel Thorvaldsen’s jubilant homecoming to Copenhagen in 1838 after many years in Rome.

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DENMARK History is retold in engaging exhibitions at the National Museum of Denmark, reaching back to the nation’s first Ice Age hunters and on to the Vikings and medieval and Renaissance times to today’s alternative living in Copenhagen’s freetown of Christiania. The permanent exhibition Stories of Denmark 1660-2000 chronicles 350 years of Danish history, from the age of absolute monarchy to the modern welfare state. The 5,000 showcased exhibits covering 37 galleries offer insight into a once mighty seafaring nation that commanded the access to the Baltic Sea but which today takes its place among the family of European nations.

DESIGNMUSEUM DANMARK One of Scandinavia’s leading museums of industrial design and crafts, Designmuseum Danmark has, since its early inception in 1890, served as a knowledge bank for industry players and sought to inspire an appreciation of quality design in the general public. Reaching out to a contemporary audience, the museum hosts changing exhibitions and design events, including this year’s centennial exhibition of works by legendary Danish designer Finn Juhl.

On loan from such hallowed halls of modern art as the Guggenheim and Metropolitan museums in New York and Moderna Museet in Stockholm are works by leading Modernist artists such as Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger and Robert Delaunay, which are counterposed with those of leading Danish names, such as Harald Giersing, Sigurd Swane, Vilhelm Lundstrøm and Edvard Weie. Modernism, which is today so ingrained in our perception of art, was originally perceived as a new and provocative mode of artistic representation.

Your rainbow panorama offers an almost surreal yet compelling experience. Photo: Ole Hein Pedersen Your rainbow panorama © 2006 - 2011 Olafur Eliasson
ARoS MUSEUM OF ART AARHUS Your rainbow panorama A spectacular art installation by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967) crowns the ARoS Museum of Art in Aarhus – a circular glass skywalk that takes you on a 360-degree tour of the cityscape bathed in the hues of the rainbow. With a diameter of 52 metres and a concourse of 150 metres, the artwork invites you to wander at ease – and soak in the view of the sea and the city. Your rainbow panorama opened in May 2011 and last year alone attracted more than 330,000 visitors. The art installation completes the museum’s ambition of creating an experience themed on Dante’s epic poem The Divine Comedy. Nine spaces in the museum’s basement symbolise inferno’s fallen angels, whereas Eliasson’s rainbow lifts you up into panoramic paradise.

THE ROYAL DANISH BALLET The Golden Cockerel Premiere 15 September 2012 The ballet season at the Royal Danish Theatre opens with a new production by the celebrated Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, which is based on a 1834 poem by Pushkin, The Tale of the Golden Cockerel – a satirical commentary on the Russian Revolution and the Russo-Japanese War. The fable of the psychic cockerel also inspired the opera of the same title by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, which premiered in 1909.

Alexei Ratmansky’s ballet is featured as a folkloric fairytale, but is also a satire on war in which the bumbling King Dodon plans an attack on Queen Shemakha from the neighbouring nation because he thinks she is preparing an invasion. The cockerel screeches “Danger, beware,” all while the ravishing queen seduces the king and takes him on a rambling ride.

Their rendition of Macbeth is no broad-brushed epic of Scottish royalty but rather a dense drama – bloody and dirty – played by just five actors appearing on the medium stage of the Royal Danish Playhouse. It’s a story of a man who faces up to the fight and meets his fate, and about a woman, who stands by her husband in his struggle against ineptitude – and perishes. And adding to this, Macbeth also nurtures an archetypical image of manhood inspired by ruthlessness, ambition and brutality. Performances are in Danish. Staging: Rune David Grue

11 September – 26 November 2012 Danica Curcic, debutant and newly graduated, will play Lulu at the Royal Danish Playhouse Main Stage alongside a star-studded cast, including Jens Albinus, Henning Jensen, Bodil Jørgensen, Kirsten Olesen, Peter Plaugborg and Søren-Sætter Lassen. Frank Wedekind’s tragedy from 1894, which deals with sex, money and death, brought the author several lawsuits and the original manuscript was deemed to be of “immoral nature” and seized by the authorities. It’s a longstanding dream come true for director Katrine Wiedemann as she offers her interpretation of the original Lulu and Frank Wedekind’s captivating portrayal of sexuality as a force for both good and evil.

Julia Fischer is one of the classical music world’s most coveted young musicians. Not only is she an interesting musician, but she is also a prime example of a modern woman who balances a career as a violin soloist, chamber musician and professor with being a mother. In 2009, Julia Fischer released a CD of Bach’s violin concertos on the Decca label. The album was a huge success and, shortly after its launch, the iTunes Store announced that the album was its fastest selling classical release to date. On Thursday 9 August, you can experience Julia Fischer at the Tivoli Concert Hall where she will play Mendelssohn’s violin concerto. The Tivoli Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by one of the classical world’s absolute top maestros, Lawrence Foster, and the program also features Brahms’ Third Symphony.

Appearances are maintained in the small English village of Loxford, although nothing is as it appears if you scratch below the surface. So the local kingpins decide to award a prize to the only decent young man in town, Albert Herring. But being hailed as a paragon does not sit well with Albert, who puts the prize to a somewhat different use than originally intended. As with many of Britten’s operas, Albert Herring deals with the experience of standing out from the crowd – in this case with added light-hearted humour.

ROSENBORG CASTLE A small royal hermitage in the heart of Copenhagen surrounded by parkland, Rosenborg Castle was the favoured summer residence of its creator, King Christian IV (1577-1648) – the nation’s most industrious monarch. He is also believed to have been the architect of the Dutch Renaissance castle, which was completed in 1624. The castle’s 400-year-old epoch interiors feature royal collections and portraits – and whimsical mementoes, such as King Christian IV’s blood-stained handkerchief from the Battle of Colberger Heide – a naval battle against Sweden in 1644 – when the king lost an eye. the queen of denmark for 40 years By Theresa Valbæk
dronning af danmark i 40 år
With her faith in the institution of the monarchy and her commitment to the nation, Margrethe II has won the hearts of the Danes and this year celebrates her 40th royal anniversary as the Queen of Denmark. This year, 40 years ago, a simple ceremony on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace – the Danish parliament – marked the beginning of the reign of Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark (b. 1940). Dressed in mourning for the death of her father, King Frederik IX, only hours earlier, the Crown Princess became the nation’s new head of state at age 32. As tens of thousands of Danes gathered on the parliament square, the Prime Minister, Jens Otto Krag, addressed the nation from the balcony: “King Frederik IX is dead, long live her Majesty the Queen.” Like all Danish monarchs, Queen Margrethe II has adopted a motto: God’s help, the people’s love, Denmark’s strength. And since ascending to the throne the Queen has, indeed, won the hearts of the Danish people. Few monarchs in the world have enjoyed such a popular following as Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark.

124
Queen Margrethe II is officially the first reigning female sovereign in Denmark since female succession was first introduced by a constitutional amendment in 1953. Her female predecessor, Queen Margrethe I (1353-1412), was in reality not a monarch but a regent for her son, King Oluf II, who ascended to the throne at the young age of five. However, at his untimely death at the age of just seventeen, the Queen’s grip on power had become so strong that the Privy Council appointed her sovereign.
a royal family In the summer of 1967, Queen Margrethe II married the French diplomat Henri Marie Jean André, Count de Laborde de Monpezat, who became Henrik, Prince Consort of Denmark. The wedding took place at the Church of Holmen in Copenhagen opposite the parliament. The royal couple has two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim, and eight grandchildren. Queen Margrethe II became a grandmother for the first time on 28 August 1999 when Prince Nikolai was born to the Queen’s youngest son Prince Joachim and his then-wife Princess Alexandra (now Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg). The firstborn to Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary was born on 15 October 2005. Christian Valdemar Henri John (known as Prince Christian) is first in line to the throne after his father.

the queen’s duties The Queen’s main duty as head of state is to represent Denmark abroad on state visits where she also lends royal splendour to the opening of official exhibitions. The Queen attends regular cabinet meetings with the government, although Her Majesty does not wield political power beyond that of a formal figurehead. She holds public audiences where those who have received official appointments or royal honours can meet the Queen. And as a popular symbol and representative of Denmark, Her Majesty attends inaugurations and anniversaries nationwide. Her annual televised New Year address is watched by millions.
artistic activity The Queen has since 1970 nurtured her artistic talent, working with painting, ecclesiastical textiles, watercolours, prints, book illustrations, découpage, set design and embroidery. Many of these works have been displayed at exhibitions in Denmark and abroad. The Queen’s paintings and her costume and set design for the Royal Danish Theatre and the Tivoli Pantomime Theatre are widely appreciated by the public. Artworks by the Queen are represented at the Danish National Gallery, ARoS Museum of Art Aarhus and the KØS Museum of Art in the Public Space (sketches for Her Majesty’s ecclesiastical textiles).

the queen’s art By Andrea Rygg Karberg
dronningens kunst
The Queen of Denmark is artistically gifted, and visitors to Copenhagen this year can enjoy the opportunity to view the largest ever retrospective of Her Majesty’s art at the ARKEN Museum of Art, south of the city. The Queen is inspired by colour, which to her represents emotions and states of mind where words fall short. Entitled The Essence of Colour – The Art of Queen Margrethe II, the exhibition features 135 watercolours, acrylic paintings and decoupages created over a period of 35 years and demonstrates the wide scope of her artistic talent.
tolkien The Queen’s artistic adventure began in earnest with the reading of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien describes his magnificent landscapes so vividly that the Queen was inspired to render her visions in artistic form. The result was a series of watercolours entitled Landscapes of Lost Legends from 1976-1978, which is included as the exhibition’s earliest work. Blue and green colour fields flow beautifully together and are subsequently outlined with black ink. Impassable mountains, deep gorges, lakes and rivers offer a backdrop to small figures in the magnificent scenery. These are not illustrations of Tolkien’s tales but imagined landscapes mirroring the same mythical realm beyond time and space.

nordic landscapes Through the 1980s, the Queen pursued an almost abstract style, depicting close-at-hand motifs, such as the flowers in her estate gardens or the windows and facades of the royal family’s residential homes. But revisiting Landscapes of Lost Legends twenty years after their inception, Her Majesty was inspired to rediscover landscape painting and motifs that you “could walk into”. The Queen found her artistic calling in the semi-Symbolist landscapes that followed. Tempestuous skies, fathomless lakes and towering, moss-covered mountains testify to the artist’s strong sense of nature: “Nature is wonderfully beautiful and can be very idyllic, but it is also a powerful thing. Big and scary – and most fascinating when it is big and scary.” The Queen’s duties as head of state mean that she cannot always pursue her art when the inspiration comes to her but a weekly afternoon in her busy schedule is always devoted to painting. The Queen has developed an ability to save inspiring impressions and experiences and to concentrate 100 percent on painting when the opportunity arises. The Queen rarely paints directly in front of the subject. Memory and imagination are her main instruments – a lifetime of impressions from her travels all across the Danish kingdom, including the Faroe Islands and Greenland, and from Norway and Iceland are embedded in the images – images from the land and sea as well as perspectives from the air from her many helicopter trips.

130
An artistic genre that especially amuses the Queen is the fabled world of decoupage where clippings from auction catalogues and other such printed matter are combined into collages and new worlds where anything can happen. Each layer is coated with lacquer in a time-consuming and difficult process. Among the exhibits are wastepaper baskets, trays and a fireguard that usually adorn the private chambers at the Royal Palace, Amalienborg – and not least a series of oval plates embellished with decoupage, which by virtue of modern technology has also been rendered as set designs for film adaptations of two of Hans Christian Andersen’s most frightening tales, The Snow Queen and The Wild Swans. In the film, the actors appear to be moving around in the Queen’s decoupages in which the interplay of different perspectives, proportions and styles offer a surreal and kaleidoscopic visual realm. The Queen’s lifelong love of the fairytale world is given free rein in these imaginative works, which teem with detail.

Queen Margrethe II, Large carcass, 2011, Photo: Anders Sune Berg
stones, carcasses and bones As a mature artist, the Queen has in recent years created a series of paintings of sculptural, colourful stones, which have gradually become more and more organic in texture. In 2011 – up to the opening of the exhibition – the Queen created a series of images she calls knokkelbilleder (‘Bone images’) depicting the carcasses and bones of strange imaginary animals painted in pink on a garish yellow background. This new, almost aggressive use of graphic colours is a surprise – the more sinister motif, the more luminous the colours. Bones are nevertheless not a new subject in art. They have been employed as motifs since medieval times to remind us of our mortality – to lead our lives wisely and responsibly. The Queen is familiar with this tradition, although in her case the bones are associated with her interest in archaeology and the vestiges of lived life. A monarch is inevitably a historical figure and as such is guaranteed a certain sense of immortality. The Queen is a religious person, and her sarcophagus for Roskilde Cathedral has already been designed and commissioned. Her Knokkelbilleder deal with life’s big questions, while equally the artist’s joyous love of life seems far more overwhelming than her fear of death. Humour and gravity in balanced measure define the art of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II, who shares with us her unique perspective on existence.

auctions for all By Eva Helsted and Camilla Lezuik Streton
auktioner for alle
Auctions are inspiring experiences where you can purchase rare and exquisite items that you won’t find elsewhere. They also allow you to experience the excitement of bidding when an artwork by your favourite artist is up for sale, no matter whether your hopes are rewarded or dashed when the hammer finally falls. If you haven’t purchased at auction before you might think such places are the reserve of seasoned auction-goers. But that’s not the case. Everyone is welcome at Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers of Fine Art, although it’s always an advantage to know a little about the different types of auctions before embarking on the bidding.

one auction house – two types of auctions Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers of Fine Art is probably best known for its traditional auctions, which have been held since 1948 following the classic method with an auctioneer, a gavel and a podium. Online auctions were introduced in 2004 and are based on the traditional principles of auctioneering – the only difference is that bidding, the auction and payment are conducted online. You can place your bids at auction every day of the year within the categories of art, antiques, modern furniture, classical decorative art, jewellery and collectibles. All lots are presented with descriptions and photos at bruunrasmussen.dk. Here, you can easily distinguish between the two types of auctions, since the traditional auctions are marked with a burgundy colour and a symbol of a hammer, while the online auctions are marked with the colour orange and a symbol of a computer.

traditional auctions Traditional auctions are held four times a year at the auction house at Bredgade 33 in the heart of Copenhagen and four times a year at Baltikavej 10 in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn. These auctions are popular crowd-pullers. At the Bredgade auction room, the auctioneer swings the hammer over fine art, antiques, jewellery, design and decorative art, while the Baltikavej department offers auctions of rare coins and stamps. Prior to each traditional auction, richly illustrated auction catalogues are published featuring all the lots on offer. Printed versions can be ordered from bruun-rasmussen.dk where electronic versions can also be downloaded.
online auctions Unlike traditional auctions, online auctions are conducted almost every day of the year at bruun-rasmussen.dk where you can bid for items within the categories of art, antiques, jewellery, modern design, books, stamps, coins, wine and weapons. Generally speaking, online auction lots fetch lower prices than lots at traditional auctions, but the quality is still excellent. Online auctions are conducted by the Bruun Rasmussen office in Aarhus and from the offices at Sundkrogsgade 30 and Baltikavej 10 in Copenhagen. The different categories are featured on set weekdays, and the hammer generally falls at around 20:00.

136
All lots on offer at both types of auctions are presented for inspection at previews held at Bruun Rasmussen’s different departments. Here you have the chance to touch and study the items in detail and assess whether they live up to your expectations. At the preview you will also enjoy the opportunity to speak to Bruun Rasmussen’s valuation experts who can tell you more about the lots on offer. The previews of the four annual traditional auctions held at Bredgade are always a memorable experience. The finest furniture and objets d’art are exhibited in elegant surroundings reminiscent of a grander age with salons with stylish interiors, opulent chandeliers and fragrant floral arrangements. Previews of the daily online auctions are less formal and held in more prosaic ambiances in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn and in Aarhus. Whether you are looking for a modern painting, a furniture classic, a sparkling diamond ring, an elegant wristwatch or an exquisite bottle of Champagne, you’ll always enjoy a wide choice within every price range at Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers of Fine Art.

the rebirth of karma By Theresa Valbæk
fiskers karma
Legendary Danish car designer Henrik Fisker has brought a new age of sustainability to luxury automaking. His solar-powered sports sedan Fisker Karma has already hit the road – and his next model, Fisker Surf, is just about to surface.
Sleek, eye-catching and electric – Danish car designer Henrik Fisker has raised the bar for supercars with Fisker Karma. First revealed at the American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2008, this eco-friendly hybrid sports sedan hit the tarmac flying in 2011. Low-slung and easy to handle, it surges from 0-100 kilometres/ 0-60 miles in 6.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 200 kph/ 125 miles.

solar-powered A major challenge for any electric car design is the battery. The lithium-ion batteries used with most cars are similar to those in mobile phones. They are expensive and short-lived, most only last around three to four years. But Henrik Fisker believes he has found the right solution using batteries that support ranges of 80 kilometres/ 50 miles before having to recharge, which is the average daily range that most European motorists drive. According to Fisker the Karma the battery lifespan also promises to be a winner. “We have a battery with an expected lifespan of around a decade,” he says. A hybrid car, the Karma also features a small direct-injected gasoline engine to charge the lightweight battery pack and to give extra boost when exceeding the 80-kilometer range or driving in the full-speed Sports Drive mode. But even when burning up the road, the Karma will run a full 40 kilometres on the litre/ 95 miles on the gallon. Other energy-saving features include the regenerative brake system, which recaptures braking energy, and the optional full-length solar-panelled roof. Fisker Automotive will additionally offer a set of solar panels for the home to generate electricity during the day needed to charge the car overnight – emissions free.
Men Henrik Fisker mener at have fundet løsningen med relative små batterier.

tegnede biler i folkeskolen
designer career Henrik Fisker grew up in the provincial towns of Allerød and Roskilde. His passion for cars started while he was still a young boy, and he always played with cars. In school, his exercise books were covered with car doodles and drawings. So when he left school he contacted Volvo in Sweden, asking to become part of their design team. They wrote back telling him that Volvo sponsored the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, which was about to open a department in Switzerland. So he grabbed his portfolio and headed for Switzerland, where in 1986 he embarked on what was to become a remarkable career as a top car designer. And he has achieved the impossible. As chief designer at BMW, Fisker developed the BMW Z8 – the car sported by James Bond in *The World Is Not Enough*. He also headed the design team at Aston Martin, the ultimate job for any aspiring car designer. Henrik Fisker had always dreamed of going it alone, so in 2005 he quit Aston Martin to start his own marque. First he launched Fisker Coachbuild, offering customised sports cars based on existing models. He then created Fisker Automotive to design hybrid sports cars.
the next karma Following his successful launch of the Fisker Karma, the legendary Danish car designer is now ready to present the next generation solar-powered vehicle, the Fisker Surf. The new model is a four-door family-friendly hatchback with the same range as the Fisker Karma. The production model will be unveiled at the 2012 Paris Auto Show in September and the first cars are set to roll of the assembly line in Finland in 2013.
Passionen for biler startede allerede i drengeårene. The World Is Not Enough*.

His newly released book The Decorated Children portrays some of the still imagery that populates his imaginative world and includes a series of 53 tableaux with mysterious stories about humans as privileged beings. The allegoric tale tells of three characters that do as they please in the world, and through dramatic tableaux their actions are shown to have serious unforeseen consequences. The book features a fascinating combination of drawing and photography, displaying scenes of beauty, vitality and moral decay. Over the course of more than 250 years, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Visual Arts has helped defined contemporary perceptions of art. MFA graduates from the academy are made well aware of the challenges of their practice and the demands and opportunities afforded by modern society in which visual culture undergoes constant change. The annual exhibition of works by MFA graduates this year introduces us to perceptions and trends that are representative of the young artist scene. The exhibition projects and envisions the direction of art and challenges us to relate to the current issues surrounding this generation.

Now for the first time artists have been invited to use the manor garden as a large-scale exhibition space for contemporary art. Works by nine Danish artists and artist groups will be presented, several of which are on-site projects, including contemporary sculptures and installations. Among the works featured are installations by Thomas Øvlisen and Jesper Dalgaard using nature’s own materials. The artist group Vinyl-terror & -horror present a fusion between a bathroom and a fountain. And living art in the form of pink sheep is presented by Henrik Plenge Jakobsen. There are new interpretations of classical sculptures by Tove Storch and Jeanette Hillig, and inspiring new beehives are the artistic brainchild of Lisbeth Bank.
secret garden: ny dansk kunst i thurahs barokhave Gl. Holtegaard, Holte 11. maj – 21. oktober 2012 Gl.

Astrid Kruse Jensen, Disappearing into the past #60, 2011, fiber print, 80 x 82 cm, ed. of 5

astrid kruse jensen: disappearing into the past Rønnebæksholm, Næstved 17 June – 12 August 2012 One of the most remarkable younger artists in Denmark is Astrid Kruse Jensen (b. 1975) whose photographic works have been highlighted in group and solo shows throughout the world. This summer she presents her latest series of works entitled Disappearing into the Past at Rønnebæksholm – an arts and culture centre situated close to the town of Næstved. Astrid Kruse Jensen’s signature has been deserted nightscapes, composed of technically perfect photos with deep black night skies and strong intense colours, only occasionally populated by a mysterious, lonely woman in a red outfit. Her work is characterised by a surreal atmosphere, balancing between dream and reality. Recently, Astrid Kruse Jensen’s work has taken a turn, and in the exhibition she invites us on a journey into a poetic, dreamy universe of lost memories, through installations of misty, vanishing imagery. With an old Polaroid camera and photo films that have passed their expiry date, Astrid Kruse Jensen seeks to re-visualise a lost world of childhood impressions and a sense of nature’s innocence. The title Disappearing into the Past refers to both memory as a dynamic process, and to the disappearing Polaroid medium.

treffpunkt : berlin ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art, Ishøj 12 May – 22 July 2012 There are many reasons why Berlin has become an art metropolis. The city offers a dynamic, creative atmosphere, low rents, and an abundance of exhibition spaces – and basically everyone involved in contemporary art is represented there. One of the many Danish artists who has been drawn to the city is Jeppe Hein (b. 1974), whose artwork Why are you here and not somewhere else? literally bends in neon the basic premise of the exhibition. Apart from querying why artists flock to Berlin, the artwork also reflects on the wider existential question of belonging. The exhibition TREFFPUNKT : BERLIN (i.e. ‘Meeting point : Berlin’) at the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art just south of Copenhagen brings together a group of artists with strong ties to the German capital, offering a multifaceted view of the city’s art life and its wellspring of artistic inspiration. Participating artists: benandsebastian (GB/DK), Sophie Calle (FR), Elmgreen & Dragset (DK/NO), Thomas Florschuetz (DE), Thilo Frank (DE), Cyprien Gaillard (FR), Helen Mirra (US), Jeppe Hein (DK), Jacob Kirkegaard (DK), Jakob Kolding (DK), Søren Lose (DK), Simon Dybbroe Møller (DK), Jesper Rasmussen (DK) and Wolfgang Tillmans (DE).
Medvirkende kunstnere: benandsebastian (GB/DK), Sophie Calle (FR), Elmgreen & Dragset (DK/NO), Thomas Florschuetz (DE), Thilo Frank (DE), Cyprien Gaillard (FR), Helen Mirra (US), Jeppe Hein (DK), Jacob Kirkegaard (DK), Jakob Kolding (DK), Søren Lose (DK), Simon Dybbroe Møller (DK), Jesper Rasmussen (DK) og Wolfgang Tillmans (DE).

Larissa Sansour: Olive Tree, Nation Estate, 2012
Photographic Centre, Copenhagen 10 August – 7 October 2012 Palestinian-Danish artist Larissa Sansour (b. 1973) is to host her first solo exhibition in Denmark at the Photographic Centre in Copenhagen, which is dedicated to photography and video art. The main work featured is Larissa Sansour’s most recent project Nation Estate, which was initiated for the Elysée Photo Prize 2011 under the theme la joie de vivre in the wake of the Palestinian bid for nationhood at the UN. The work consists of 8-10 largeformat photos and a five-minute short film. Larissa Sansour’s sci-fi photo series depicts a dystopian vision of a future Palestinian state reduced to the size of a single skyscraper with each floor representing a whole city – a ‘nation estate’. Intercity trips previously marred by checkpoints are now easily made by elevator. While immersed in the current political dialogue, her interdisciplinary art practice and her humorous playing with references to film and pop culture challenge our perception of reality, and create parallel universes in which new value systems can be decoded. The Photographic Centre is located in the old Carlsberg brewery area, which has in recent years evolved into a new art zone. The centre shares its building with Scandinavia’s largest centre for contemporary dance, Dansehallerne/Dansescenen.

Sussi Trampedach dresses her animal-like beings in seductively beautiful clothes. By rendering them as ravishing and lavishly dressed with an animalistic or mystical aspect to their being, Sussi Trampedach draws attention to the double sidedness that is part of our condition. In her art, Sussi Trampedach is preoccupied with how we use clothes to make statements and how attitudes change when dress codes change. Her field of investigation are the conventions that guide society and the way we live.
