CONTRIBUTORS Kristina Antivakis has wanted to become a journalist since fifth grade and, after a detour studying Danish at Aalborg University, she graduated as a journalist from the University of Southern Denmark in 2002. Antivakis has primarily worked in television and has been involved in everything from big entertainment shows and consumer report programs to documentaries. Currently, Kristina works primarily with concept development of new television shows, but continues to write for, among others, the Danish women’s magazine Alt for Damerne. Sidsel Marie Bøg is an experienced hair & make-up artist with more than 18 years of experience in the beauty industry. Bøg has build solid expertise within hair & make-up with her educational background from The Danish Hair Academy, London College of Fashion, her years of teaching students for Bumble and Bumble and her position as a beauty editor for Vs. magazine. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated in Denmark on the North Zealand coast with a fine view across the Sound of Sweden. It houses an exquisite collection of modern and contemporary art by international artists and is continually expanded. For this reason, besides individual features that are almost always on view – such as the Giacometti Gallery, the Kusama Installation, and the Powerless Structure by Elmgreen and Dragset in the Panorama Room - the bulk of the collection is shown in selected, curated presentations throughout the year. The museum shows 8-10 major exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming international artists. Louisiana is not merely an experience in modern and contemporary art, but a congenial reflection of the interplay between art, architecture and landscape. The park serves as an ideal setting for displaying the museum’s collection of modern sculptures. Similarly the prominent museum buildings, constructed between 1958 and 1998, offer a fascinating background for the permanent collection of twentieth century art.

ARKEN Kun 20 kilometer syd for København ligger ARKEN Museum for Moderne Kunst. Søren Robert Lund er arkitekten bag den karakteristiske museumsbygning, der siden åbningen i 1996 har ligget som en stor skulptur ud til Køge Bugt. Som navnet antyder, er ARKEN skabt over en metafor for et strandet skib, og både den maritime arkitektur og museets identitet kredser om beliggenheden. ARKEN Only 20 kilometres south of Copenhagen lies ARKEN, Denmark’s newest museum of modern art. Søren Robert Lund is the architect behind the distinctive building, which has risen on the water’s edge in Køge Bugt Beach Park since the opening in 1996. As suggested by the name, the building was designed as a metaphor for a ship, and the maritime architecture and the museum identity revolve around the location. In 2016, the sea moved even closer and an old dream of creating an “art island” became a reality. Now, lagoons, bridges, dunes and coastal vegetation, along with an expanding sculpture park, create an informal and magnificent setting for the ARKEN museum. ARKEN offers world-class art. THE MUSEUM OF NATIONAL HISTORY AT FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE Frederiksborg Castle is situated in Hillerød, north of Copenhagen. This impressive and unrivalled Renaissance castle was built in the first decades of the 17th century by the Danish King Christian IV. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878, when it was established by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg. The beautiful decorated rooms with portraits, history paintings, furniture, and decorative art invite visitors on a journey through Danish history and culture from the late Middle Ages to the present. The historical interiors and the splendorous rooms give a sensuous impression of changing styles and epochs. VIKINGESKIBSMUSEET I ROSKILDE Med bølgernes brus i ørene og duften af tjære og frisk træ i næsen er Vikingeskibsmuseet, der ligger smukt helt ned til Roskilde Fjord, et oplagt besøg for alle med bare lidt vikingeblod i årene. THE VIKING SHIP MUSEUM IN ROSKILDE With the sound of the waves and the smell of tar and fresh wood, the Viking Ship Museum is located right by Roskilde Fjord and it is a great visit for anyone with Viking blood in their veins. Here you find plenty of activities, history, atmosphere and a beautiful harbour with traditional, Nordic boats and full size Viking ships. The Viking Ship Museum focuses on the Vikings’ maritime craftsmanship and their impressive ships and offers you experiences enough for a whole day. At the Exhibition Hall, you find five original Viking ships that bear witness to war, trade and sea voyages to distant places. The New Exhibition ‘Climb Aboard’ takes you on a virtual voyage to the open sea where the weather changes from calm breeze to storms, thunder and high seas. At the Boatyard you can follow the building of a replica Viking ship. The skilled boat builders use the same tools, materials and techniques as the Vikings did 1000 years ago. In the sailing season -1 May to 30 September - you can step on board a traditional boat, row out into the Roskilde Fjord and set sail!

THORVALDSENS MUSEUM Thorvaldsens Museum er bygget op som ramme om én enkelt kunstners livsværk, nemlig den danske billedhugger Bertel Thorvaldsen (17701844). Thorvaldsen boede mere end 40 år i Rom, og han blev en af sin tids mest berømte kunstnere. I 1838 testamenterede han både sine værker og sine kunstsamlinger til fødebyen København, der lod et helt museum bygge til hans værker. Thorvaldsens Museum åbnede i 1848, og det var landets allerførste offentlige museum. Museets arkitektur og de udstillede skulpturer spiller smukt sammen, og de farvestrålende og rigt dekorerede rum er en helt særlig oplevelse. Museet rummer over 900 af Thorvaldsens egne værker - skulpturer og relieffer i gips og marmor samt tegnede og modellerede skitser til skulpturerne. De fleste motiver er hentet fra græsk og romersk mytologi - men der er også et stort antal portrætbuster og skulpturer af europæiske borgerlige, gejstlige og kongelige, som alle bestilte deres portræt hos den berømte skulptør. THORVALDSENS MUSEUM Thorvaldsen’s Museum is built as a framework for a single artist’s oeuvre, the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Thorvaldsen lived more than 40 years in Rome, where he became one of the most celebrated artists. In 1838, he bequeathed both his work and his art collections to his home city Copenhagen that dedicated an entire museum building to his work. Thorvaldsen Museum opened in 1848 and it was the country’s first public museum. The museum’s architecture and the exhibited sculptures play beautifully together, and the colorful and richly decorated rooms are a very special experience. The museum consists of 900 of Thorvaldsen’s own works - sculptures and reliefs in plaster and marble and designed and modeled sketches for sculptures. Most images are taken from Greek and Roman mythology - but there are also a large number of portrait busts and sculptures of European civilians, ecclesiastical and royalty, all ordered their portrait by the famous sculptor. The museum also holds Thorvaldsen’s collection of Danish and European paintings and his antique collection with marble sculptures, vases, coins and more from Egypt, Greece and Italy.

NYHAVN Nyhavn er en af Københavns absolutte turistmagneter. Det er et perfekt sted at starte eller slutte en lang dag. Nyhavn hed oprindelig Den Nye Havn og stammer tilbage fra 1673. Den startede som en travl erhvervshavn, hvor skibe fra hele verden lagde til kaj. Livet i havnen var præget af sømænd, værtshuse, glædespiger og fest. Den Nye Havn blev til Nyhavn, og de skønne, gamle og skæve huse, som før husede købmænd, er nu smukt renoverede og området er fyldt med hyggelige restauranter og barer.
NYHAVN Nyhavn Canal is one of Copenhagen’s absolute top tourist attractions. It’s a perfect place to start or end a long day of sightseeing. Dine at one of the many charming restaurants or do as Copenhageners – enjoy a beer on the quayside. Nyhavn Canal is probably Denmark’s largest tourist attraction with free admission – and a must-see landmark. Nyhavn Canal was originally called Den Nye Havn (The New Harbour) and dates back to 1673. It started as a port where vessels from all over the world would dock. Life in the harbour would be abuzz with sailors, taverns, parties and ladies of the evening. The beautiful, old and crooked canalside houses, which were previously used by merchants, are now beautifully restored and the area is filled with charming restaurants and bars.

KRONBORG SLOT Kronborg slot - hvortil Shakespeare henlagde Hamlet, og i hvis kasematter Holger Danske sover - var færdigbygget i 1585. Bygherren var Frederik II, og arkitekterne var Hans van Paeschen og Anthonis van Obbergen. Slottet, med den enestående beliggenhed ud til Øresund, rummer bl.a. Nordeuropas største Dansesal (62 x 12 m), kongens og dronningens kamre, rigsrådssalen, dronningens galleri og slotskirken. På Kronborg findes bl.a. 7 af Hans Kniepers kongetapeter, der er fremstillet til Dansesalen, og som stammer fra 1585. Slottet blev i 2000 optaget på UNESCO’s verdenskulturarvliste.
KRONBORG CASTLE Kronborg Castle - in which Shakespeare’s drama, Hamlet, take place and where Denmark’s legendary hero, Holger the Dane, sleeps in the Casemates - was finished in 1585. The builder was Frederik II and the architects were Hans van Paeschen and Anthonis van Obbergen. The castle with its unique location on the Sound has the largest Ballroom in Northern Europe (62 X 12 m). Kronborg has, among other treasures, 7 of Hans Knieper’s royal tapestries which were made for the Ballroom in 1585. The castle has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

MOSEDE FORT Museets permanente udstilling fortæller gennem oplevelsesrum, installationer, billeder og genstande, hvordan Danmark måtte kæmpe aktivt for at bevare sin neutralitet under 1. verdenskrig. Udstillingen fortæller om krigshandel og gullaschbaroner, velfærdsstatstankens gennemslag og revolutionsfrygt, kvinders stemmeret og pressecensur, humanitære indsatser og militære foranstaltninger. Kom og oplev hvordan den danske velfærdsstat blev født under kampen for neutralitet. Museet er indrettet i et 100-år gammelt kystfort, så der er også mulighed for at gå en tur langs stranden ned til Mosede Havn.
MOSEDE FORT What happens in a neutral state during a world war? During WW1, Denmark was caught between its powerful neighbor to the south, Germany, and its biggest trading partner, Great Britain. Balancing war trade, humanitarian efforts, diplomacy and military precautions, Denmark walked a tightrope between the two. To keep the balance, the state also had to bridge growing social divisions created by war trade and war costs. From this, the Danish welfare state model was born in. Through immersive and interactive installations, photos and objects, you can experience this dramatic story at the coastal fort, Mosede.

THE MUSEUM OF NATIONAL HISTORY AT FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE This impressive and unrivalled Renaissance castle was built in the first decades of the 17th century by the Danish King Christian IV. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878, when it was established by brewer J.C . Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg. Today the museum is an independent part of the Carlsberg Foundation. The beautifully decorated rooms with portraits, history paintings, furniture, and decorative art invite visitors on a journey through Danish history and culture from the late Middle Ages to the present. The historical interiors and the splendorous rooms give a sensuous impression of changing styles and epochs. The collection of portraits is the largest and most significant in Denmark, with new works continually added to the collection. Several times a year, the museum arranges temporary exhibitions. Frederiksborg Castle Chapel is a unique space with its original decoration dating from the time of King Christian IV, but the Chapel also contains several historical treasures. While the fire of 1859 destroyed large parts of Frederiksborg Castle, the Chapel was left virtually unscathed. During the period of absolute monarchy (1660-1848) the Kings of Denmark were anointed in the Castle Chapel, and since 1693 it has been the Knights’ Chapel for the Orders of the Elephant and Dannebrog. The coats of arms that adorn the walls feature several that were awarded to international heads of state such as Nelson Mandela and distinguished Danes such as Mærsk McKinney Møller and Niels Bohr. In weekends and holidays from Easter to mid-October visitors can meet the castle hosts. The hosts are wearing historical costumes that have been made especially for the museum based on dresses seen in the portrait collection. During this time children and their families can also visit the children’s department in the old wine cellar of the castle. In here, children can dress up in Renaissance gowns made for the museum and visit the creative workshop where they can write with feather and ink and make colour drawings with inspiration from historical paintings and enjoy guided tours. The museum is open everyday throughout the year.
Frederiksborg Slot blev bygget af Christian IV i 1600-tallets første årtier og er Nordens største renæssanceanlæg. Museet har haft til huse på Frederiksborg Slot siden 1878, og blev oprettet på foranledning af Carlsbergs grundlægger, brygger J.C. Jacobsen, efter en voldsom slotsbrand i 1859. Museet drives fortsat som en selvstændig afdeling af Carlsbergfondet. En tur gennem museets mange smukke sale er en vandring gennem 500 års danmarkshistorie, fortalt gennem den rige samling af portrætter, historiemalerier, møbler og kunstindustri. Fortællingerne understøttes af slottets smukke historiske omgivelser. På museet stifter man bekendtskab med personer og begivenheder, der har været med til at forme Danmarks historie fra middelalderen til det 21. århundrede. Museets fine periodeinteriører og slottets imponerende pragtrum giver et sansemættet indtryk af skiftende stilarter og perioder samt tidligere tiders omgangsformer. Museets portrætsamling udgør landets største og betydeligste, og samlingen af malerier, buster, tegninger og fotografier suppleres løbende med nye værker. Når man besøger Frederiksborg Slot, kan man opleve den smukke slotskirke, som er et enestående rum med sin originaludsmykning fra Christian 4.s tid. Kirken rummer også flere historiske skatte. Mens store dele af slottets indre blev ødelagt ved branden i 1859, gik kirken næsten fri. Under enevælden (1660-1848) blev de danske konger salvet (kronet) i Slotskirken, og siden 1693 har her været ridderkapel for Elefantordenen og Dannebrogordenen. Blandt de våbens- og ordensskjolde, der pryder væggene, findes flere, der er skænket til internationale statsoverhoveder som Nelson Mandela og fremtrædende danskere som Mærsk McKinney Møller og Niels Bohr. Frederiksborg Slotskirke har siden Christian 4.s tid fungeret som sognekirke og gør det stadig i dag. Det Nationalhistoriske Museum arrangerer årligt særudstillinger, hvor danmarkshistorien, portrætgenren eller andre af museets områder bliver sat i relief og dermed oplevet i et nyt lys. Museet har åbent alle årets dage.

“Twice as much fun as bikes that cost twice as much”. “A beast of a bicycle”. “The Tesla of electric bikes”. That’s the praise that was bestowed by the world’s largest tech media on the revolutionary e-bike MATE X at its launch in 2018. Since then, the Danish siblings behind Mate.bike, Christian Adel Michael and Julie Kronstrøm Carton, have sold 14,000 of their bikes in more than 70 countries. According to the creators, their success is due to their unyielding focus on design and branding. The urban-inspired e-bike has become a fixture at such prominent events as Burning Man, Coachella and the Cannes Lions, and is a hit among such A-list celebrities as Orlando Bloom, Kanye West and Katy Perry. Also, don’t expect to find Mate.bikes at your local bike store. Instead, the creators have invested in their own online shop and have subsequently partnered with such leading stores as Selfridges in London, KaDeWe in Berlin, Maxfield in Los Angeles and Illum in Copenhagen. And it’s no coincidence that design and branding comprise the core soul of Mate.bike. The whole adventure began in 2016 when Christian and Julie became frustrated at the lack of e-bikes that reached above average in terms of style. They took on the challenge themselves and launched their own first e-bike, the MATE Classic, which like the new MATE X became a huge success, selling in the thousands worldwide. The mission for the Copenhagen-based start-up is clear: more people need to take the bike. 900 MILLION YEARS OF LOVE The love of raw diamonds came out of the blue for owner and designer behind Roughdiamonds.dk, Maya Bjørnsten. When explaining how it came about, she always points to a particular picture on the wall in the small courtyard building on Bredgade in Copenhagen. “My husband came home from a business trip to Antwerp with bags of photos from the diamond district. One of them struck a deep chord with me, and when I asked what these beautiful stones were, the answer was that they were rough diamonds. I’ve always seen opportunities in the odd and different, so if diamonds are so beautiful in themselves, why cut them at all?” Maya decided she wanted to own a piece of jewellery with rough diamonds. But no matter how hard she searched, she couldn’t find any. So, she decided to create her own rough diamond jewellery. “I am not a jeweller myself and am not sure I have the knack for the craft. But I have a completely clear picture of what the jewellery should look like and how each individual diamond should be brought to life – not only by the jewellery piece, but especially when worn by the right person,” she says with a smile.
For indehaver og designer bag Roughdiamonds.dk, Maya Bjørnsten, kom forelskelsen i de rå diamanter ud af det blå. Når hun skal forklare hvordan den opstod, peger hun altid på ét bestemt billede på væggen i det lille baghus i Bredgade i København. ”Min mand kom hjem fra en forretningsrejse til Antwerpen i Belgien med kufferten fuld af billeder fra diamantdistriktet. Ét af dem ramte noget dybt i mig, og da jeg spurgte hvad det var for nogle smukke sten, så var svaret at det var rå, uslebne diamanter. Jeg har altid set muligheder i det skæve og anderledes, så hvis diamanterne er så smukke i sig selv, hvorfor så overhovedet begynde at slibe dem?” Maya bestemte sig for, at hun ville eje et smykke med rå diamanter. Men lige meget hvor meget hun søgte, kunne hun ikke finde et. Så hun besluttede sig for at skabe sine egne smykker med rå diamanter: ”Jeg er ikke selv guldsmed og er egentlig heller ikke sikker på, at jeg ville have håndelaget til det. Men jeg har et fuldstændigt klart billede af, hvordan smykkerne skal se ud, og hvordan hver enkelt rå diamant bliver vækket til live – ikke kun gennem smykket, men især også når det bliver båret af den rette person,” siger hun med et smil.

DE RÅ DIAMANTERS UNIVERS Det er dybden af det uperfekte der driver værket og er helt tydelig når smykkedesigneren byder indenfor i den let skjulte butik i Bredgade. Her findes fortællingen om, hvordan de rå diamanter blev skabt for millioner og milliarder år siden; hvordan de bliver fundet og ikke mindst handlet. ”Hver gang jeg tager til Antwerpen for at håndplukke de smukke konfliktfrie rå diamanter bliver jeg overvældet af deres uperfekte skønhed. Deres små ”fejl” og indeslutninger giver dem karakter og styrke, og er med til at fortælle deres unikke historier. Det er enormt vigtigt for os, at vores rå diamanter udelukkende kommer fra de gode historier, og vi værdsætter det enormt højt, når vi kan spore den enkelte rå diamants oprindelsesland og i visse tilfælde hvilken mine, den kommer fra,” fortæller Maya, mens hun viser et udvalg af de skønheder, hun har købt på diamantmarkedet i Antwerpen. Blandt billederne på væggen er også flere af Maya ved en lille skole i den isolerede landsby Chisanza i Zambia, hvortil der for hvert eneste solgte smykke gives en donation, selvom der ikke er diamanter i landet. For som Maya siger, hvis hendes lille private donation kan gøre en forskel for ungdommen i Zambia, så giver Roughdiamonds.dks arbejde endnu mere mening.

UNIVERSE OF ROUGH DIAMONDS It’s the profundity of imperfection that inspires her, which becomes evident when Bjørnsten welcomes us to the somewhat hidden boutique on Bredgade. Here she initiates us in the tale of how rough diamonds were created millions and billions of years ago, how they are mined, and how they are traded. “Every time I go to Antwerp to handpick our conflict-free raw diamonds, I am overwhelmed by their imperfect beauty. Their small impurities and inclusions give them character and strength and help to tell their unique stories. It is extremely important to us that our rough diamonds exclusively reflect good stories, and we value it tremendously when we can trace the country of origin of the individual diamond and, in some cases, which mine it comes from,” Maya says, while showing a selection of the beauties she has bought in the Antwerp diamond market. Among the pictures on the wall are also several showing Maya visiting a small school in the remote village of Chisanza in Zambia, which for every piece of jewellery that is sold receives a donation, despite the country not having any diamonds. For, as Maya says, if her small private donation can make a difference for the youth of Zambia, then Roughdiamonds.dk’s undertaking makes even more sense.

CRAFT AND PASSION The next chapter of the story of Roughdiamonds.dk sees the opening of a small atelier in the equally small courtyard building, where two goldsmiths and a diamond setter will lend their craftsmanship to create one-off jewellery pieces from scratch. “Having your own atelier has always been a desire of mine. Being able to follow the creation of the jewellery from the selection of the rough diamonds to the crafting of the jewellery pieces where my visions are brought to life is a fantastic process. It is so important that our jewellery is made in Denmark, not only because working with the uncut shapes of the rough diamonds requires special skills, but also because it’s the small details that help to create the overall look. TEA THROUGH 180 YEARS Tea was one of the most important products traded at the end of the 18th century and many merchants established and obtained their goods from docking ships at Christianshavn in Copenhagen. Among these merchants was Niels Brock Perch the founder of A.C. Perch´s Tea Shop. The idea was to sell the best teas from all over the world and today this is still our most important task. Seven generations of tea merchants have owned the family business and the historical tea shop hasn´t changed much in 180 years. Today you can choose between 175 different kinds of tea in the shop and the Tearoom offers you the traditional afternoon tea with delicious scones, petit four cakes and small finger sandwiches. A lovely place to take a break.

ANIMALS IN ART By Rebekka Laugesen
Italian contemporary artist Paola Pivi creates large, feathered polar bears of natural size in florescent colours. Their light plumage responds to any movement in the air and is brought to life as people pass by. The artworks are reminiscent of the mighty polar bears of the wild, yet they also resemble soft teddy bears that convey care and human embrace. ‘Animals in Art’ is an extensive exhibition at ARKEN Museum of Modern Art that invites you into the animal kingdom of art. The exhibition presents sculptures and installations, video, photography and paintings by a large number of international artists, who all investigate what animals and our relationship with other species tell us about people. Currently, contemporary art has a growing interest in issues of the communities of species, all while the Internet is flooded with cute pets and YouTube cat videos. Since the first figurative cave paintings were created more than 40,000 years ago, animals have been a favourite motif in art, and the way we categorise, consume and look at animals tells us who we are.
DYR I KUNSTEN Den italienske samtidskunstner Paola Pivi skaber store, fjerklædte isbjørne i naturlig størrelse og neonfarver. Bjørnenes lette fjerdragt reagerer på enhver bevægelse i luften og bliver vakt til live, når man passerer forbi dem. De minder både om mægtige isbjørne i den vilde natur og bløde bamsebjørne, der formidler omsorg og tilbyder tryghed i menneskets favn. ARKENs store udstilling ’Dyr i kunsten’ inviterer ind i kunstens dyrerige. Udstillingen viser skulptur og installation, video, fotografi og maleri af en lang række internationale kunstnere, der alle undersøger, hvordan dyrene og vores relation til andre arter fortæller noget om os mennesker. I disse år er der i samtidskunsten en voksende interesse for spørgsmål om artsfælleskaber. Alt imens internettet flyder over af ’cute’ kæledyr og kattevideoer på YouTube. Siden de første figurative hulemalerier blev skabt for mindst 40.000 år siden, har dyret været et yndet motiv i kunsten, og måden vi kategoriser, forbruger og ser på dyr fortæller os om, hvem vi er.

UDSTOPPEDE DYR OG ZOOLOGISKE HAVER Vi ser på levende dyr i zoologisk have og døde dyr i glasvitriner på naturhistorisk museum – fra sjældne fuglearter til krokodiller. Eller vi møder de udstoppede dyr som trofæer i jagtstuer, der vidner om mennesket overlegenhed. Der er dog noget forbavsende anderledes ved italienske Maurizio Cattelans udstoppede hest ’Novecento’ (1996). Hesten hænger magtesløs fra loftet i sine seler, som har den overgivet sig til tyngdekræften. Hesten er ellers oftest kendetegnet ved dens kraft og styrke – tænk blot på, hvordan vi forbinder rytterstatuer med almægtighed og taler om eksklusive bilers hestekræfter. Værket rejser spørgsmål om magt og magtesløshed, og om hvem og hvilke arter, der har ret til hvad. I 1600-tallet udstoppede man dyr til samlingerne i encyklopædiske kunstkamre, hvor man kunne betragte og beundre eksotiske dyr fra hele verden. Senere, i 1700 og 1800-tallet, blev det mode i Europas højere samfundslag at eje prægtige, udstoppede dyr. Den japanske kunstner Kohei Nawas smukke, udstoppede hjort ‘PixCell-Deer#24’ (2016) er dækket fra hov til gevir af små og store glaskugler. Glaskuglerne tjener et optisk formål; hver og en fungerer de som en linse, der forstørrer hjortens pels – eller trækker os selv og det omgivende rum ind som en spejling. I zoologisk have kommer vi knap så tæt på dyrene. Alligevel flokkes vi til haverne for at se og møde de nuttede, sære, vilde, farlige, forunderlige og morsomme dyr. Trods kritikken af de moderne zoologiske haver er de populære udflugtsmål verden over. I den fotografiske serie ’Zoologischer Gärten, 1990-92’ (1990-92) indtager kunstneren Candida Höfer en undersøgende position med sit kamera og lader os dvæle ved de kunstigt skabte omgivelser, fulde af illusionistiske tricks, arkitektoniske greb og rekvisitter, så som giraffen på den opmalede savanne.

STUFFED ANIMALS AND ZOOS We gaze at live animals in zoos and dead animals in glass showcases at natural history museums – from rare bird species to crocodiles. And we encounter stuffed animals as trophies in hunting lodges that testify to man’s superiority. Nonetheless, there is something astonishingly different about Italian Maurizio Cattelan’s stuffed horse Novecento (1996). The horse hangs powerless from the ceiling in its harness as if surrendering to gravity. Horses in artworks are often associated with power and strength – just think of how we equate equestrian statues with omnipotence and use the term ‘horsepower’ when talking of supercars. Cattelan’s artwork raises questions about power and powerlessness, and about who and which species are entitled to do what. In the 1600s, animals were stuffed for collections in encyclopaedic art chambers, where you could view and admire exotic animals from around the world. Later, in the 1700s and 1800s, owning magnificent stuffed animals became fashionable in Europe’s higher strata of society. Japanese artist Kohei Nawa’s beautiful stuffed deer Pixceldeer (2016) is covered from hoof to antler by small and large glass balls. These glass spheres serve an optical purpose: each act as a lens that magnifies the deer’s fur – or reflects the viewer and the surrounding space like a mirror. At zoos, we get far less close to animals, yet we still flock to such sanctuaries to see and meet adorable, strange, wild, dangerous, wondrous and funny animals. Despite the criticism of modern zoos, they remain popular excursion destinations worldwide. In the photographic series Zoologischer Gärten, 1990-92 (1990-92), artist Candida Höfer occupies an investigative position with her camera and lets us dwell on the artificially created surroundings, full of illusions and architectural tricks and props, such as the giraffe surrounded by a painted savanna.

IT’S SOOO CUTE! Kattekillingerne i tyske Martin Eders fire meter brede maleri ’Catastrophe’ (2018) er så nuttede med deres bløde pels, appellerende runde øjne og små knurhår, at det næsten ikke er til at bære. Den syrede og dystre baggrund, der varsler stormvejr i pink, lilla og orange understreger med sin voldsomhed killingernes nuttede uskyld. Man får sådan lyst til at redde dem.
IT’S SOOO CUTE! The kittens in German artist Martin Eder’s four-meter-wide painting Catastrophe (2018) are so adorable with their soft fur, appealing round eyes and short whiskers that it’s almost unbearable. The doom and gloom of the background, which paints a warning of stormy weather in hues of pink, purple and orange, highlights with its ferocity the adorable innocence of the kittens. You really want to save them. Eder’s artwork toys with the emotions and the empathy that arises when we meet adorable creatures. According to American cultural theorist Sianne Ngai, cuteness awakens mixed feelings of devotion and aggression. She points to how cuteness pervades society and culture of our time. An example of how cuteness has become part of our everyday lives is when we take selfies with filters that give us soft puppy-ears and sparkling eyes as big as teacups. When Ngai also talks about aggression, it’s about the urge to possess cuteness and the feeling that something is so adorable that you really must own it, whether a teddy bear in a toyshop or our own muchloved pets. When French artist Sophie Calle’s cat Souris (French for ‘mouse’) was put down in 2014, she released nothing less than a triple album of tribute songs for her cat. The songs were written by prominent musicians, such as Laurie Anderson, The National, Pharrel Williams, Jean-Michel Jarre, Michael Stipe and Bono. The creation of the music can be seen as a processing of Calle’s grief over her loss and reminds us that our close relationship with our pets equals that of our closest relatives. Pets, stuffed animals, industrial animals, they all tell something about the human species, and right now contemporary art teems with animals like never before.

Ifølge den amerikanske kulturteoretiker Sianne Ngai vækker det nuttede (the cute) blandede følelser i os af hengivelse og aggression. Når Ngai også taler om aggression, handler det om trangen til at besidde det nuttede og følelsen af, at noget er så nuttet, at man bare må eje det – uanset om vores blik fanges af bamsen på legetøjshylden, eller vi forføres af vores egne, højtelskede kæledyr. ARGYLE-MINEN LUKKER Omkring 90 procent af verdens pink diamanter kommer fra Argyle-minen i Australien, og det blev i efteråret offentliggjort at minen lukkes ned i 2020. En epoke slutter, og pink diamanter bliver endnu mere sjældne. Store prisstigninger og mange auktionsrekorder har pustet til drømmen om at eje en pink diamant, hvilket også mærkes hos eneste Argyle Pink Diamonds Select Atelier i Skandinavien, Hartmann’s i Bredgade, København. ”Vi har vidst i mange år, at minen har en begrænset levetid, men nu er det nu! Det kommer meget tæt på. Vi oplever, at flere og flere efterspørger pink diamanter, og vi får flere henvendelser omkring erhvervelse for investeringsøjemed, for kunderne er også ved at opfatte knapheden i udbuddet,” fortæller Ulrik Hartmann.
DEN SIDSTE STORE ARGYLE PINK KOLLEKTION ER EUROPAS STØRSTE Hartmann’s har handlet med pink diamanter siden 2001 og har gennem årene etableret tætte bånd med Argyle-minen. Som hyldest til Argyle-minens enorme betydning har diamantforretningen lanceret sin sidste store kollektion med pink og champagnefarvede diamanter – The Argyle Legacy Collection. Smykkekollektionen har været undervejs i mere end et år, og er den største med pink diamanter i Europa nogensinde. Kollektionens 160 smykker har en samlet værdi på kr. 50 mio., og er samtidig den største Hartmann’s til dato har lanceret. ”Det er med stolthed og vemod, at jeg lancerer The Legacy Collection. THE ARGYLE MINE IS CLOSING Around 90 percent of the world’s pink diamonds derive from the Argyle mine in Australia. This autumn, the mine announced its closure in 2020. An era is reaching its end and pink diamonds will become even rarer. A huge increase in price and successive auction records have fuelled the desire to own a pink diamond, which has also become evident at the sole “Argyle Pink Diamonds Select Atelier” in Scandinavia, Hartmann’s in Bredgade, Copenhagen. “We have known for many years that the mine would have a limited lifespan, but now it’s happening and the end is near. We are experiencing greater and greater demand for pink diamonds, and we also receive more inquiries about acquisitions for investment purposes due to customers now starting to realise the scarcity of supply,” says Ulrik Hartmann.
THE LAST LARGE ARGYLE PINK COLLECTION IS EUROPE’S MOST EXTENSIVE Hartmann’s has been trading in pink diamonds since 2001 and has over the years established a close bond with the Argyle mine. In tribute to the tremendous significance of the Argyle mine, Hartmann’s has introduced its latest large jewellery collection with pink and champagne coloured diamonds – The Argyle Legacy Collection. The collection has been in the works for more than a year and is the largest-ever such collection in Europe. The 160 jewellery pieces represent a total value of DKK 50 million and the collection is also the largest launched by Hartmann’s to date. “It is with wistful pride that I introduce The Argyle Legacy Collection. With this collection, I want to extend to our customers the opportunity to own beautiful and rare diamonds from the Argyle mine, and maybe even pass them on to the next generation. Because even though the mining will stop and the supply of new pink diamonds to the world market will decline significantly, Argyle diamonds will live on. There is a legacy after Argyle – The Argyle Legacy Collection,” concludes Ulrik Hartmann.

THE ENCHANTING HUES OF ARGYLE DIAMONDS The brilliance and colour intensity of Argyle diamonds is without parallel. Whereas most other pink diamond mines in the world produce light or pale diamonds, those from the Argyle mine are strong, intense and warm in hue. Nature alone determines the colour, and here the Argyle mine is geologically unique. Rare pink diamonds are available in a stunning palette of feminine colours, ranging from delicate to intense pink and a wealth of orange and brownish toned varieties. Most coveted and rare are the pure pink diamonds and the warm and intense fancy purplish pink and fancy vivid purplish pink colours.

It covers an area of 450,000 m2, reaches down to 1 km in depth and has approx. 40 km of mine tunnels. - The mine was originally an open pit mine, but in 2013 it was converted into an underground mine at a cost of US$ 2.8 billion. - Argyle produces 90 percent of the world’s pink diamonds and accounts for a significant portion of Australia’s diamond production. There are 300,000 people employed, directly and indirectly, in mining, grinding, and diamond trading – from Australia to India and Europe. - The mine is operated by Rio Tinto and headquartered in London with diamond offices in Perth, Singapore and Antwerp. - When the mine has closed, a huge nature restoration undertaking will begin. US$ 200 million has been set aside for the task, which is estimated to take 10 years. The project includes planting 10,000 trees.

HARTMANN’S – SCANDINAVIA’S ONLY ARGYLE PINK DIAMONDS SELECT ATELIER Hartmann’s is one of only three diamond dealers in Europe licensed as an “Argyle Pink Diamonds Select Atelier”, a title bestowed by the mining company Rio Tinto that grants permission to trade directly with the mine. Hartmann’s is invited to the annual Argyle tender – an auction for 150 of the world’s leading diamond dealers where the rarest and most sought-after coloured diamonds go under the hammer.
EXTENSIVE EXPERTISE Hartmann’s has traded in pink diamonds since 2001 and has a great deal of expertise in this field. In 2012, Ulrik Hartmann created two rare and unique diamond rings for an exhibition at Kensington Palace on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee, and in 2016 Ulrik Hartmann hosted a pre-viewing of that year’s diamonds tender with the participation of, among others, the Danish Minister of Culture. Ulrik regularly gives lectures and has appeared on the morning TV programme ‘Go’morgen Danmark’ multiple times to talk about pink diamonds.

ART GUIDE MONICA HEE EUN Født i Korea i 1982, Monica Hee Eun er en dansk maler, som bor og arbejder i København. Monica fokuserer hovedsageligt på begreber vedrørende de primale, mørkere drifter og lyster inden for den menneskelige oplevelse. I sin kreative proces forsøger hun at få adgang til, samt at transcendere, disse mørkere følelser ved at give dem form, kroppe og ansigter - for at anerkende og bedre forstå dem, som en vigtig del af vores menneskelige vilkår. Temaer som lyst og begær, vold og død emmer fra hendes visuelle univers, og på lærrederne fornemmer vi en verden, der ubarmhjertigt går i opløsning, og hvor sort ofte dominerer over alle farver. Hvor vilde væsener, nogle surrealistiske og mareridtsagtige, ofte med en sensuelt lokkende kraft, knurrer efter opmærksomhed eller måske genkendelighed med sin beskuer. Monica er en del af The Dark Art Movement - en organisation oprettet til at fremme dark art i alle dens varianter og for at støtte det samfund af kunstnere der arbejder i denne kunstgenre.

Monica mainly focuses on concepts of the primal, darker drives and urges within the human experience. Within her creative process she attempts to access and transcend these darker emotions by giving them form, bodies and faces - to acknowledge and better understand them as an important part of our condition as human beings. Themes of lust and desire, violence and death emits from her visual universe, and on the canvases we sense a world that relentlessly disintegrates, and where black often predominates over all colour. Where feral beings, some surreal and nightmarishly, often with a sensually enticing force, snarl for attention or perhaps recognition with its viewer. Monica is part of The Dark Movement - an organisation created to promote the dark art in all its variants, and to support the community of artists who work in this artistic genre.
