Happening Out Art Gallery with Dennis Dean presented the monthly Artist Showcase at their brand-new location 2401 N. Dixie Highway. The event featured live entertainment by the amazingly talented Alexander Zenoz singing, a fashion show by Devious Saint by Coco Alarcon, and a book signing with author Lage Carlson.

Later than night we headed over to Hunters who presented Disco Legend, France Joli, live and performed her greatest hits including: “Come To me,” and “The Heart To Break The Heart.” What a great show!

On Wednesday, Jan 25 The Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce presented their 11th Annual "State of Our Community" EXPOsure & Awards Luncheon at Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay. Guest speakers Include: Mayor Daniella Levine Cava - Mayor Miami-Dade County; Mayor Francis Suarez - City of Miami; Mayor Dan Gelber - City of Miami Beach,

On Friday, Jan 20, A Night at the Disco: Where the Stars Shine took place at the Parker Playhouse and was brought to South Florida by Frank Spadea, of Dudes Barbershop. I was excited to relive my childhood and hear all my favorite songs, but this concert far surpassed my expectations. It was a night full of joy that went from 8pm to almost midnight…a TRUE concert! I advise everyone to watch for the next one and buy our tickets early as it will sell out!

Also on Wednesday was the unveiling of, Pixar Putt, the ultimate pop-up, open-air minigolf experience, at The LOOP (Las Olas Oceanside Park). Pixar Putt is made up of 18 fun, interactive, Instagramable holes inspired by the stories, characters, and icons from some of Disney and Pixar's most beloved films. Check it out! On Saturday, January 28, The Eagle Wilton Manors presented their annual contest Mr. Eagle 2023, an official preliminary to Mr. IML in Chicago. Congrats to Lil Daddy Gilbert on his win!

Later that night HRC presented their annual gala in South Florida to, once again, a packed hose.

On Sunday, January 29, was the 2nd annual My Hollywood Pride Street Festival in Downtown Hollywood. The Street Festival, which included a number of food vendors with a focus on local Hollywood restaurants and businesses also featured live musical entertainment on its Main Stage, hosted by Velvet Lenore, and featured drag queens and artists performing across a range of genres. Congrats to the producers on another successful event.

Pride of the America's presented by Visit Lauderdale presents their parade at 12 noon, with the festival from 1-9pm at Las Olas Promenade Park (80 Las Olas Circle). The festival will feature DJ's Manny Lehman and Paulo and the headliner at 7:30pm is the one and only Boy George. The official after-party for Pride of the America's takes place at The Manor Complex, where the entire club will be open. The inaugural Pride of the Americas presented by Visit Lauderdale and Pride Fort Lauderdale takes place February 10-12 in Fort Lauderdale Florida. The main event takes place on Saturday, February 11, and is moving to the heart of Fort Lauderdale Beach at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park, 80 Las Olas Circle just off Las Olas Blvd.

The Pride of the Americas Parade presented by Midland Family & CAN Community Health will step off at NOON on SR A1A (affectionately renamed “GAY1A” for the event) along Fort Lauderdale Beach and proceed south to the Pride of the Americas Festival at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park, 80 Las

Olas Circle. The Grand Marshals for the Pride of the Americas Parade will be local travel and tourism icon Ina Lee, transgender activist Rajee Narinesingh, and Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner, and former Vice Mayor Steve Glassman.

Organizers of the event noted that the honorees have all helped to make South Florida a vibrant home to the LGBTQ+ community and a welcoming destination for visitors.

Ina Lee is the owner and publisher of TravelHOST Elite magazine, now in its 42nd year, and championed efforts to elevate the visitor experience on Fort Lauderdale Beach. She founded the Winterfest Boat Parade, the largest boat parade of its kind in the world and a signature

event for the city each year at Christmas time.

Rajee Narinesingh is a transgender activist, spiritualist, actress and reality TV personality who has appeared on more than 35 national and international talk shows (“Dr. Phil,” “Anderson Cooper,” “Good Morning Britain”) to discuss her journey and experiences with dangerous black market silicone injections marketed to the transgender community.

Steve Glassman is the Fort Lauderdale former Vice Mayor and City Commissioner for District 2, which includes Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Commissioner Glassman was sworn in for his first term in March 2018 and reelected in 2020.

“We're truly excited to honor these three

deserving people as grand marshals of the Pride of the Americas Parade,” said Miik Martorell, president of the event organizer, Pride Fort Lauderdale. “Each has made significant and lasting contributions to both our community and making Fort Lauderdale a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQ+ people. We know everyone will be gratefully cheering them on as they lead the parade.”

Gary Santis Events will be producing the main stage and when I asked Gary what we should expect he said, “In addition to great performances by celebrity Grammy Award winner Boy George, and music by superstar festival DJ's Paulo & Manny Lehman, expect to see 12 ft. pride winged angels, led drum

experience, TransPride, internationally acclaimed DJs, and up to 70 vendors,” says Miik Martorell. “And, of course, we have the legendary Boy George and big surprises planned as we celebrate Pride right here in the gateway to the Americas."

We asked DJ Alex Acosta about what we should expect from his set at the pool party and he said: “I'm very excited to be part of this year's Fort Lauderdale Pride celebration! I'm looking forward to playing at this year's PRIDE SPLASH POOL party along with Deanne! And this one is extra special, since I don't get to do much T-Dances or Pool Parties, so expect a different sound from me,

additional events throughout the year.”

The Pride of the Americas Parade is free and open to the public. Pride on the Drive tickets are free when you register on our website. Festival general admission tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the gate. There are a limited number of tickets available for the VIP experience. Love yourself first they say. It's shouted from the rooftops, and from the valleys below. Love yourself first they say, and you'll be able to love others. Well, we sure know how to love because it's fair to say that with the power of love, we endured the test of humanity. And although we have ways to go, we remember our history with the strength of Black Love.

It's Black History Month, and as we continue the yearly repetitious education of the battles, we as Black and Brown individuals have overcome both then and now, and as we march on for true equal rights, we do so with love in our hearts. Love for our culture, Love for our endurance, Love for others. And now it's time to shower Black Love upon ourselves.

A self-love not to be forced but reciprocated with love from others. Because they say, when you love yourself, you'll be able to love others. In tribute to Black History Month and the month of love I present our Black Love Dynasty Couples, local LGBTQ Black couples that are cloaked in Black Love.

Billy Porter Comes to the Theaters

Billy Porter - the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner - needs no introduction—especially to the many fans of his character Pray Tell on Ryan Murphy's hit TV series “Pose.”

Coming up exclusively in theaters February 10th, Porter will star as a Super Bowl half-time show choreographer, opposite Oscar winners Sally Field, Rita Moreno, Jane Fonda, and Tony winner Lilly Tomlin, in the feel-good comedy “80 For Brady,” a comic homage to popular quarterback Tom Brady.

Porter rocketed to superstardom when he originated the role of Lola in the Tony winning Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” just over ten years ago. But show business was always in his blood.

“I started singing in church at a very young age,” he says. By fifth grade the bullying had stopped and in middle school I got involved with theater. I dreamed about being on Broadway and becoming the male Whitney Houston.”

Porter knew he was onto something when he won $100,000 on Star Search, in 1992 but he never expected success would come easy.

“I took all of the necessary steps to prepare myself for a career in show business,” he says. “There have been moments of frustration, but no one is entitled to anything.

“I've practiced acting every day for decades. I went to Carnegie Mellon. I went to graduate school at UCLA. To this day, I still take singing lessons. I have the patience of Job. My best advice for anyone who

wants to become a professional is to practice – even when no one is looking.”

How did Porter prepare himself for a trajectory in acting and a career in fashion? “I decided at a very young age to dress for the job I wanted, not the job I have”, he explains.

The “Oscar” dress, which made Porter a viral sensation, wasn't something that 'just happened.' In 2013, while Porter was in Chicago doing previews of “Kinky Boots”, he met with fans at the stage door after every performance. “It was right at the time when social media was taking off, especially Instagram photos, and I was dressing geek chic.

“When I looked at the news the day after the first performance, I saw pictures of myself and I looked like a bag lady. From that moment on, I dressed up every day. After every show, before I went out the stage door to go home, I dressed up.” From then on, any candid photos that people did take of Porter were not only flattering but trend setting. “For three years, while I was on Broadway with 'Kinky Boots', I dressed up after every performance, just to go out to the car to go home.”

In 2019, just a year before the pandemic hit, Porter started to gain attention for some of the most fabulous outfits that have ever adorned any human. At the Grammy Awards, he wore an embroidered suit and pink cape. That same year, at the Academy Awards he wore the famous black fitted tuxedo and velvet gown created by Christian Siriano, accompanied by 6-inch Rick Owens boots.

The gender-fluid outfits worn by Porter that are now famous the world over were not intended to be labeled. “All of the outfits I have worn aligned with the roles I was playing. The term 'non-binary' never occurred to me.”

And now Billy Porter has become an inspiration for celebs such as Harry Styles, who posed on the cover of Vogue last year in a Gucci dress. “You said that, not me,” Porter insists I disclose.

“I have a calling,” he admits. “It is funneled through artistry.

Beef Short Ribs & Rice

2lbs of short ribs

3 cups of chicken stock

Salt

Pepper

8 oz of tomato sauce

½ cup of red wine (cabernet sauvignon)

2 large carrots chopped

1 white onion, chopped

4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon of oregano

2 bay leaves

2 cloves of garlic minced

Preheat oven to 350° F. Generously apply salt and pepper to your short ribs. Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Just before the oil begins to smoke, add the short ribs. and sear them until lightly browned on both sides. Remove short ribs and set aside. Add the carrots, onions, and garlic and sauté, just until onions become a bit translucent. A dd in oregano, and red wine, and stir well to deglaze the Dutch oven. Add back in short ribs, and add tomato sauce, and the cups of chicken stock. Make sure that short ribs are completely covered in liquid. Add additional salt to taste, if needed. Add bay leaves, and cover. Place in oven for 2 hours. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Serve with white rice.

South by Southwest: home of the queer documentary

We're hoping so, really, because wicked characters are always more fun, and they never actually go away for good, sometimes returning even after they've been killed off in an earlier story. And besides, Aquaman can handle another nemesis; he's a superhero and that's his job. Settle in and wait, though, because the movie opens in 11 months from now in December.

Tootsie Arrives at the Kravis Center

Tootsie, the hilarious Tony Awardwinning musical, is coming to the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts for a limited one-week engagement from February 7 – 12.

This laugh-outloud love letter to the theater tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime. Horn and an outrageously clever score by 2018 Tonywinner David Yazbek (The Band's Visit, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), this New York Times Critic's Pick is “a joyful delight” (The Washington Post) that's “so packed with punchlines, it should be called a jokebox musical!” (Bloomberg). “In these turbulent times, when the world seems out of balance, we need a place to let the good times roll,” raves Rolling Stone. “Tootsie is it!”

“Tootsie” is based on the story by Don McGuire and Larry Gelbart and the Columbia Pictures Motion Picture produced by Punch Productions and starring Dustin Hoffman. This production of “Tootsie” was licensed by Music Theatre International. The National Tour of “Tootsie” is produced and managed by Troika Entertainment.

It was a pleasure to sit down with lead actor Drew Becker for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

At what age did you begin performing?

I did my first show and started taking classes when I was in 5th grade. What was your first paid gig? About 2 years after I graduated, I did the musical, “We Will Rock You” with Royal Caribbean on a cruise ship. When did you know performing would be your career?

I think my sophomore year of High School when I was doing a production of “Godspell” and that's when I started talking to my teacher and mentors about pursuing a career in performing and they convinced me I should and could.

Tootsie is such an iconic role,

made famous by Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman, is there extra pressure playing this role?

I didn't really feel pressure as when I was going through auditions and through rehearsals the creative team was so generous to us actors. They really allowed us to bring our own interpretations to these characters.

Other than this one, what has been your favorite role so far? The summer right before I started doing “Tootsie,” I did a production of “Matilda” where I got to play Miss Trunchbull. What's your fantasy role (a role you haven't played but want to)?

I would love to do a play

next, but I am not the type of person that has dream roles. To be honest Tootsie wasn't a dream of mine, but it has become a dream. I usually see a company or director I want to work with and that's what I go after.

Is it hard being on the road all the time?

Honestly, I love it. I know a lot of people have a struggle with it, but I just love getting to explore different cities and taste the different foods and to get to see what the different audiences are. I really like the lifestyle of touring.

How well do you and your castmates get along?

We are literally like a little family. We love each other, but just like a real family does, we get in fights sometimes. Because this show is a comedy, we get to have a blast with each other every night. It's a fantastic group of people.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Passionate, determined, and loving. What do you do for fun?

Most of the time when I am not doing the show I am just resting to do the next show. However, I am very passionate about fitness and going to the gym and staying healthy. I am also a big movie buff. I also love seeing interviews with actors that I look up to.

What should our readers expect from this touring company of “Tootsie”?

Our show is one that people don't seem to have a lot of expectations for, but in every single city when I go through the stage door, the audiences tell me it's one of the best shows they have seen. Also, people will laugh way more than they expect to. Your audience can show up and expect to have one of the most fun nights they have had at a theater.

Even if someone is talking to me or asks a question, he answers before I get the chance to say anything. I feel like he barely even listens to me when I am talking. Everyone deserves to have a voice and be heard. If you have not made your boyfriend aware of this behavior, you may need to say something. If you have said something, then you need to reiterate it, and maybe work on some communication techniques. If a conversation is taken away from you, kindly redirect it by maybe interrupting him when he talks on your behalf. Sometimes people don't realize what they are doing, because it's just force of habit, anxiety, or the excitement of the moment. You can also seek therapy together to help with communication and modifying behaviors. Good luck!

That certainly seems like a lot of time together. I can understand how you would feel that you have no space, and something that was dear to you – now feels shared or even taken. The reality of the situation is that you are going to have to tell him. Especially if you are seeking change. It may not be the most pleasant of conversations, but it needs to be done and delivered gently.
