Lewis-Manning Hospice Care has appointed ex councillor and Mayor of Poole Xena Dion as a Charity Ambassador.

On Monday, 2nd March, The Green House Hotel invited local businesses to its awardwinning Arbor restaurant to taste the newly launched breakfast menu, created by internationally renowned nutritionist, Barbara Cox and head chef Andy Hilton.

A familiar face from the local area, Xena Dion, has joined forces with Lewis-Manning Hospice Care as a Charity Ambassador. Xena has agreed to help the team promote the services of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care across East Dorset and get involved with fundraising events and initiatives. Said CEO Clare Gallie, “We are delighted that Xena has agreed to help LewisManning Hospice Care at such a crucial time. She will help us deliver our mission to have a greater impact on individuals living with life limiting illnesses in Poole, Purbeck & East Dorset.” Said Xena Dion, “Myself and my husband, Bryan Dion, are actively involved in our local community and I am passionate about health and health care, particularly in helping people get the specialist or most appropriate care required.

The morning started with attendees enjoying a talk from Barbara about how to fuel your day with the correct foods, she discussed the benefits of an anti-inflammatory diet and how choosing this diet can help the body fight illnesses and prevent more serious conditions. Guests then had a delicious buffet style breakfast including, homemade spelt and quinoa croissants, overnight oats with blueberries and raspberries, paleo granola and fresh fruit platters.

“I recently joined the Council of Governors for Dorset Health Care who act as their ‘critical friend’ as they work to provide the wide range and high quality services across Dorset and I’m looking forward to seeing Lewis-Manning Hospice Care grow, expand and deliver their new services in the years ahead for our local area.”

DORSET BUSINESS ANGELS VI RTUAL I NVESTO R PITC H ES L AUNCHED Dorset Business Angels (DBA) April pitch event has been relaunched as a virtual pitch platform which will enable 5 businesses the opportunity to continue to seek investment from the business angels. DBA Chairman Don McQueen said, “Despite the current Coronavirus pandemic and the extremely challenging times that we are experiencing, we have decided to carry on with our pitch event. We had initially considered cancelling the quarterly pitches but it became very evident that the businesses involved were very keen for it to continue. The DBA investors and our partners feel that it is our duty in the current climate to reach out to businesses, help out with funding, provide inspiration, mentoring and much needed enthusiasm and commitment.” The 5 pitching businesses will upload their presentations to a DBA Members’ hub online. Angels will be able to submit questions to the entrepreneurs and register interest, where appropriate. DBA was formed in 2013 with the aim to bring investors and entrepreneurs together to accelerate the growth of early stage businesses. DBA provides quality, private equity investment opportunities to local high net worth (HNW) and sophisticated investors (SI).

From Summer 2020, this new legislation will result in all new private tenancies in England requiring landlords to ensure that electrical installations are inspected and tested by a qualified person before the tenancy begins. The landlord will then need to ensure that the installation is inspected and tested at least every five years – and more often if the most recent safety report requires it. For existing tenancies, an electrical safety test will need to be carried out by the Spring of 2021. Generous ticket holders have donated more than £8,000 to Lighthouse since Poole’s centre for the arts closed its doors in line with the country-wide closure of venues and other measures to stop the spread on COVID-19. As efforts continue to reschedule shows that have been postponed or cancelled Lighthouse is contacting ticket holders who are able to choose between a full refund, a credit note or to donate all or some of the cost of their tickets to the venue. Of the first 500 customers to reply to the email they received, 116 offered a full donation and a further 84 offered to split a donation with a refund or credit note. Ticket holders do not need to contact Lighthouse, all will be contacted in due course by the venue. Lighthouse phone lines will remain closed until further notice.

Be Prepared Moving house is often classified as one of life’s most stressful events, with a recent poll (Yopa, 2019) voting a move to be more nerve-wracking than getting a divorce, with 60% of people admitting they were put off moving to avoid the potential strain. However, there are things you can do to mitigate the stress of moving home. Get a Quote for your Conveyancing early This takes a few minutes to gather, and can make all the difference to your moving schedule. This reduces the time it takes for them to complete the relevant checks (such as ID verification), and could speed up your completion date. Above all, it’s important to look after yourself, and have regular breaks if you start to feel overwhelmed. Designate a clutter drawer No home can be completely free of clutter - so create a place specifically for tucking it away. Try the designers’ two-step plan for a clutter-busting solution. First, home in on that clutter and gather it into one place (at some point, you can work out whether you can sort it, reduce it, or get rid of it altogether). Next, select one drawer to store unsightly or practical items that can’t be stored elsewhere in a home. Unsightly electrical cables, newspapers, children’s toys or spare accessories could be the perfect candidates for that ‘tidy away’ compartment, they suggest. Create a multi-sensory home Finally, finish with a flourish by making your home a multi-sensory space, urge the interior gurus. This simply means a space which appeals to all of our senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. Apparently, if all those needs are catered for, explain the duo, it helps us feel relaxed and nurtured in our homes - what’s not to like? Pre-nups are contracts made between a couple before they marry or enter a civil partnership and set out the financial consequences of a future divorce or dissolution. Why do I need one?

A pre-nup will make a difference to how financial assets are divided between you and your spouse or civil partner. Baked Onion Bhajis INGREDIENTS

MAKES 20

1. Peel and finely slice the onions. Cut each slice into 3cm pieces. Place the onions in a

Using a spoon or your hands, make 20 equal-sized onion balls and place them on the parchment paper. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until nicely browned. Remember, ovens vary, so check the bhajis from time to time. Serve with a good chutney and/or raita. Note: If you would rather deep-fry the bhajis for up to 27 extra calories per bhaji, heat 10cm (4 inches) of rapeseed (canola) oil to 165°C/330°F in a wok or saucepan, and fry them for about two minutes - until just turning brown. The bhajis will probably still be a bit raw in the middle. Remove from the oil and heat the oil to 185°C/365°F, then fry again for about two more minutes until crispy and brown and completely cooked through. You will need to do this in batches. Transfer to paper towels to soak up any excess oil.

Home-grown hiking trips to plan for when lockdown ends Use time indoors to appreciate what's on your doorstep by planning a walking holiday, says Sarah Marshall. Along with limiting our social interactions, the UK's lockdown will play havoc with personal pedometers. There's only so many steps you can clock up between the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, after all. Once restrictions are lifted, we'll all be yearning to stretch our legs and venture on expeditions far more exciting than trips to Superdrug or Sainsbury's. While now is the time to stay put, there's no harm in armchair drifting - using time indoors to plan al fresco trips for later this year. If you do dream of striding over hills and up mountains, or rambling along coastlines and through forests, consider one of these exhilarating hikes in the UK and Ireland. A novel escape WHERE: The Hardy Way, Dorset Victorian poet and novelist Thomas Hardy captured the essence of rural England in many of his great works, romanticising locations throughout the Dorset countryside. Keen rambler and literature lover Margaret Marande joined the dots between many of these famous spots by creating a long-distance 220-mile walking trail, documented in her book, The Hardy Way - A 19th Century Pilgrimage. Spend the night at The Inn in Cranborne where Hardy once stayed, visit Win Green, featured in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and head to Shaftesbury - referred to as Shaston in Jude The Obscure. The coronavirus shutdown could mean bulging waistlines with most of the nation’s favourite sports and activities banned for at least three weeks. But being trapped in the house doesn’t have to mean being stuck on the sofa, and with the NHS recommending everyone does at least 150 minutes of exercise per week, it is best to keep moving. Here’s how to stay fit and healthy while avoiding Covid-19. YOGA Visions of rubber-limbed Instagram yoga bunnies might be daunting but in reality it begins with just a little light stretching to improve flexibility - there are even a range of movements that don’t require a yoga mat. There are thousands of free websites offering video tutorials, so it is a case of shopping around and seeing which you get on best with.

Most websites have dozens of videos ranging from beginner to advanced, as well as routines tailored to plus sizes and to those with mobility issues. SKIPPING It might conjure up memories of playground rhymes, or even mental images of Rocky Balboa but skipping is simple and gets the heart rate up in no time. All non-essential shops are now closed and even Sports Direct has belatedly shut its doors, so you may need to rely on a younger member of the household for a skipping rope if you don’t already have one. STAIRS If you are short on gym equipment then you can always make use of a set of stairs, should you have them. There are various exercises you can try including stair pushups, reverse lunges and tricep dips - even just walking up and down them a few times will at least get you moving. SOFA The call of the sofa might be strong - but see if you can resist Netflix for 20 minutes and try a quick workout instead. It might sound simple but even sitting down and standing up again 10 times in a row will work out your thighs, or placing two hands on the sofa while extending one leg behind you will get your muscles burning. Search “sofa workout” online for hundreds of videos promising to get you fit from the comfort of your living room.

GARDENING If you are lucky enough to have a garden, get out in it. In fact, the nation’s most avid gardeners probably won’t notice the lockdown at all. Now could be the time to plant an insect garden - purple flowers attract butterflies - while pots of herbs and easyto-grow seeds are available in most of the major supermarkets. You could even attempt an insect hotel with whatever you have lying around like twigs, pine cones, old roofing tiles and bricks - they need to be wedged into a frame to create lots of bolt holes for our six-legged friends.

We’ve found ourselves in a very unique position where the finished product is available in the show home of phase one and what better way to demonstrate phase two than to showcase the incredible product on the doorstep. A theme was set upon – ‘A day in the life of…’ – and the team used this as their basis to work out which areas of the home to focus on. A concise image list for the photographer was produced alongside a prop list and model requirements to help bring the shoot to life and make it as realistic as possible.

How to create a mindfulness corner in your garden As focus on the wellbeing benefits of plants and nature grows, RHS scientist Alistair Griffiths talks to Hannah Stephenson about mindfulness corners. RHS director of science, Professor Alistair Griffiths has done a lot of research into wellbeing and gardens. Now, he’s teamed up with award-winning garden designer Matt Keightley to help more of us dig into these benefits with a new book, RHS Your Wellbeing Garden, in which the pair offer a range of ideas for using greenery and gardens to distract from the stresses of life, whether it be butterflies, birdsong, or sensory and scented plants.

“It’s about being in the present, backed by evidence which shows that if you spend a little bit of time just stopping and thinking about yourself and how you are feeling, it helps to be surrounded by the right elements of your natural habitat.” Researchers in Edinburgh also found people living closer to green space had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those living further away, he adds. “There’s a worry that we’ll get ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’, where the less nature we have within our habitat has a negative effect on our anxiety and stress,” says Griffiths. Curious to ‘grow’ some nature-inspired wellbeing or create a garden mindfulness corner of your own? Read on for Griffiths’ top tips... What should you include? “Key elements of life, like shelter and water, are relevant to a mindfulness corner, which is trying to create a refuge but with an ability to view outside of that,” says Griffiths.

“I hope this book will say, ‘Listen people, you are part of nature’,” Griffiths explains. “We’ve done lots of work into how we look after birds and bees, but we haven’t really looked at what a garden means for our own health.” There’s lots of evidence that being in nature is good for us - so why not create spaces specifically for this purpose? The idea is to create a peaceful corner, surrounded by plants, where you can practice some mindfulness. A fan of checking in for a “body health check”, Griffiths suggests: “Breathe more deeply and think about the different parts of your body and working through them to check your health status, surrounded by nature.

Where do you start? “Create an area of seating where you can sit alone, or with friends and family,” he suggests. Try to make room for plants which attract butterflies, bees and wildlife to distract you from everyday life. “Even on a balcony, if you can look at your wider view and see a wider part of nature. Picture-frame those,” adds Griffiths. “If there are trees in the city you can help to create a design to picture-frame that bit, like a window to nature.” Think about water It’s good to have an element of water, where you have the ability to see and hear the water and look at its reflectiveness, he advises. And if you only have a balcony, or no outdoor space at all? “Bring nature indoors,” says Griffiths. “You can make a mindfulness corner in your house, bringing greenery into those spaces, which will be more critical in relation to the future. Interior green walls are developing, which are becoming quite easy to maintain. “In my house, I have a couple of nice palms in selfwatering containers and some ferns in a corner. They sit in my office along with asparagus ferns along my windowsill. The greenery connects to the wider landscape. Even just having a couple of plants is the first connection people have with nature.”

Equipped with cutting-edge chassis technology and innovative systems, the four-door model sets the benchmark in

The ASX is a roomy and capable contender offering very good value for money, with prices starting at £20,295 for the entry-level Dynamic model which is well-equipped with standard features including alloy wheels LED headlights, privacy glass, heated front seats, cruise control, airconditioning, and reversing camera. It also has a digital radio, Bluetooth and smartphone link.

It is a substantial specification for the money and the exterior styling and smartly-designed cabin give the ASX a more upmarket appearance than its pricing might suggest. The frontal design has bold eyecatching styling with extensive chromework and large light clusters creating unmistakable presence and the cabin features quality trim materials and has a classy uncluttered dashboard with a large central infotainment screen which is easy to operate.

The ASX uses a 150 hp petrol engine with manual or CVT automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive is available on the top-range Exceed model which I tested recently.

On the road, the ASX impresses with its smooth and composed driving feel and excellent ride comfort. The 0-60 mph time is 12.2 seconds, top speed 118 mph. Average fuel economy is 38.7 mpg with emissions 167 g/km. The CVT automatic transmission has a 6-speed Sport mode with paddle shifts for those who want more involvement in the driving, and the normal two-wheel-drive system can become four-wheel-drive at the touch of a switch. Spacious, practical, versatile and with arresting visual impact, the new ASX is a strong challenger in the SUV sector and has the advantage of being more keenly priced than many of its rivals while still offering a generous level of equipment.

So an estate car which is also a plug-in hybrid offering exceptional fuel economy and very low emissions would have additional appeal to those in the estate car market, writes NICK FLETCHER. The outstanding contender in this important niche sector is the Volkswagen Passat Estate, which is priced from £27,575 and is available with petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. I recently tested the Passat estate in plug-in hybrid form. Fitted with a 1.4 litre petrol engine, 6-speed DSG auto gearbox and electric motor, it delivers a punchy 215 hp for eager performance, yet has remarkably low fuel economy and emissions and can run up to 35 miles on electric power only. Top speed is 138 mph, the 0-60 mph time is a quick 7.6 seconds and emissions are just 39 g/km. The official combined fuel economy figure is 180.8 mpg and while ideal conditions would be required to achieve that figure in real-world driving, this is still a very economical estate car. In upper-specification GTE Advance trim it is priced at £40,860 and is laden with kit which

includes sat-nav, infotainment system including digital radio, Bluetooth, smartphone mirroring and other connectivity features, a plug-in charging point in the front grille, rear privacy glass, LED lights and leather upholstery. Extensive safety features include adaptive and predictive cruise control, parking sensors front and rear, lane-keep assist, city emergency braking, and driver alert warning. Five adults have plenty of head and leg room and the boot-space of 650 litres is close to being the best in the class, and can be expanded to an enormous 1,780 litres with the rear seats folded. Elegant exterior styling and a classy upmarket interior make the Passat Estate feel very special and that feeling continues once you start driving. Docile in urban traffic, it is a smooth quiet motorway cruiser and the overall driving dynamics and wide range of driver aids evoke effortless ambiance. The Passat estate has competition primarily from other German marques – Audi, MercedesBenz and BMW - but I feel the Passat comes across as the most accomplished, especially in plug-in hybrid form.

MAKES 20 TACOS

1 lime, zest and juice, plus extra wedges for squeezing (optional) 1 spring onion, sliced into rough matchsticks 1 pineapple, peeled and sliced into waferthin circles A small handful of coriander leaves

Parmesan Cod with Salt & Vinegar Cucumber

SERVES 4

1. Heat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. INGREDIENTS

Hot & Cold Pickled Tomatoes with Chilli Yoghurt SERVS 3-5

INGREDIENTS

1. Place a saucepan on a medium heat and add the oil. Bring to a simmer - be very careful
