CHARITIES!

The Bournemouth Day Nursery has announced that it is open for business with childcare places available for Key Workers.

On Sunday 26th April, 240 members of 4Com staff, family and friends took part in the 2.6 Challenge, with the aim of helping the UK’s charities during these uncertain times.

Peter Ward, Partner at Bournemouth Day Nursery said, “It has been reported in the national press that Key Workers, as designated by the government, have had difficulties finding suitable childcare. “We want Key Workers in Dorset to know, however, that we are very much open for business but have limited places available. Whilst we are not operating anyway near our full capacity of 135, we are currently looking after approximately 20 children and have the capacity for an additional 40 places for key workers. “Funding is available as the government has announced that nursery funding for three and four-year olds, and some two year-olds, will be maintained. Bournemouth Day Nursery will be open to new key workers parents on a temporary basis during lockdown and without registration fees or notice penalties.” Peter concluded, “Anyone interested in enquiring about a childcare place at Bournemouth Day Nursery is urged to contact us on Tel: 01202 533911 e: bournemouthday@email.com. We look forward to hearing from you!”

FORMER COLLE AGUES LINK

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on the charity sector across the UK, with the cancellation of thousands of fundraising events resulting in the loss of billions of pounds of income. Charities are in desperate need of donations to keep their services up and running during a time when they are needed more than ever; as a result, the nationwide 2.6 Challenge was created! Dean Cartledge, Head of The 4Com Foundation said, “Here at 4Com, we wanted to offer our support to several charities, particularly those local to us. We called upon the community spirit of our employees; even during the lockdown period with staff working from home, they generously stepped up to make The 4Com 2.6 Challenge a huge success!”

TO SU PP O RT H OS PI C E As suppliers flock to donate products, skills and services to get Lewis-Manning Hospice Care’s Poole headquarters finished, former colleagues spread the word online – and secured a terrific donation of pristine office furniture. A few weeks ago, Clare Gallie, CEO of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, issued a LinkedIn, ‘shout out’ to contacts with clout, a serious appeal to speed up the refurbishment work which has now been temporarily put on hold due to the lock down. Clare’s appeal was seen by Hannah Nardini at WKspace, which specialises in the design of corporate workspace for large brands including The Body Shop, Allen & Overy and Marie Curie. Hannah said, “When I saw the post from Clare, I created a post for my business contacts which I’m delighted to say resulted in the introduction to Obolife.com. As a business we have always supported charities and not-for-profit organisations. During the past few years many have had funding cut or removed from government which drives the need for community support.” Clare thanked those local suppliers which have transformed the interior and exterior to date, via free furnishings and installation including, Saxby Lighting, Karndean Design flooring and Howdens Poole, the trade supplier provided a brand new staff kitchen, fitted by Greendale Construction. Two of Dorset’s most popular arts festivals – Inside Out Dorset and b-side – are to be postponed until next year as a consequence of the on-going coronavirus pandemic.

DIARY CALL OUT Dorset’s coronavirus archive project is up and running after a ‘fantastic’ response to the call out for prospective contributor diarists. The project run Dorset History Centre in partnership with Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, is designed to capture for posterity a range of different people’s experiences of the Virus Emergency from across the county. “Following a fantastic response from the people of Dorset we have the makings of a uniquely rich and varied archive of these unprecedented times as experienced by local people from different ages and backgrounds,” says Maria Gayton, Community Engagement Officer at Dorset History Centre. It will be fascinating to see how the project develops but thanks to the number and range of prospective diarists who have expressed an interest we are unable to take any further contributors.” The ‘Corona Diary’ will be added to the county’s archive collections and its contents will be available for interpretation as a future artwork.

BH FISH L AUNCHES I N LO C K D OWN BH Fish has been created in the midst of the Coronavirus by local businessmen Jon Morgan of Dorset Cruises and Rob Milton of Othniel Oysters, to support the local fishermen and to encourage the local community to cook freshly caught local fish. The fish is wild caught in Poole Bay and Poole Harbour, by local fishermen, using sustainable, low impact fishing methods, Lobster and Crab are caught in Poole Bay and the Oysters, Cockles & Clams from inside the harbour. Each day the local fishermen return to Poole Quay with their daily catch, the details are then uploaded to the website www.bhfish.co.uk as well as to the Facebook and Instagram pages. Deliveries are made on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, between 1pm & 5pm and collections can be made 7 days a week from The Crown Hotel, 23 Market Street, Poole, BH15 1NB. Under the current social distancing measures, the delivery drivers telephone on arrival and leave the order on the door step. The Crown Hotel in Poole on hand to fillet fish and precook lobsters & crabs, prior to delivery. Dorset wines from both English Oak and Furleigh Estate, as well as BH1 Gin and Conker Gin are also available to order and there are filleting knives, fishbone tweezers, shellfish crackers, available to purchase from the website as well.

Both biennial events had been set to return this September, Inside Out Dorset hosted by Dorchester-based outdoor arts producers Activate in extraordinary locations across the county and b-side on the Isle of Portland. Instead organisers have announced new dates for each – Inside Out Dorset will now take place from 17 to 26 September 2021 and b-side from 11 to 19 September 2021. The decisions to postpone this year’s events were not taken lightly and although planning has been paused for the time being organisers hope to be able to confirm details of locations and participating artists once the current restrictions have been lifted. Both festivals have attracted thousands of visitors to Dorset over the last 11 years, working with artists and Dorset residents to celebrate the unique and beautiful Dorset landscape. As well as supporting and showcasing local talent the festivals attract artists from around the globe, making Dorset one of the places to see and experience high quality contemporary art and outdoor arts.

“For us, a major part of our mission is to help the local community and we also want to ensure that the UK recovers from this pandemic, by working together and by trying to ensure that isolation can be more bearable”.

CHARITY SUPPORT YO U N G CA R E R S I N THEIR HOMES MYTime Young Carers Charity has extended its support to the young carers that it serves by reaching out and creating a ‘MYTime at Home’ programme (MYTime@Home). Executive Director Krista Cartlidge advised, “The charity has responded to the challenging times in which we currently find ourselves. We are really concerned about our young carers and are doing everything that we can to continue to support them whilst they are in their homes and potentially feeling isolated.” “We have created a bespoke programme of fun onine activities and challenges that young carers can do and engage with at home to give themselves short respite from the caring that they are doing and to give them back a sense of themselves at this strange time. “We have reached out to lots of incredible people to help us put these activities together - sports people, singers, musicians, poets, writers, photographers, yoga teachers- the list is amazing. These people have been so generous in taking the time to share their passions with us and will be creating short videos, blogs and podcasts, which we will then be sharing with our young carers. We also intend to share the programme with other young carers organisations and charities nationally.” Krista concluded, “If you have a passion you would like to share with our young carers please get in touch, we would love to hear from you.” - krista@mytimecharity.co.uk

Netley Court, a luxury care home in Netley Abbey, Southampton, has been awarded an overall rating of ‘outstanding’ following an inspection by England’s health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This highest rating level is only given to 3.5% of care homes in the country. In addition to the overall rating, ‘outstanding’ ratings were given for being ‘caring’ and ‘well led’.

Actor Ralph Ineson, as seen in Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and Guardians of the Galaxy, is going back to his roots as a drama teacher during lockdown. He has been working with Bournemouth Collegiate School (BCS) to encourage students to get excited about Shakespeare by performing monologues on screen to use in virtual lesson plans. Ralph’s most recent project sees him working with Director Joel Cohen and Actor Denzel Washington filming ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’. BCS students are currently studying the play, and what motivates Macbeth’s decisions in the first and second act. The students will then move on to create their own versions of the Macbeth ‘If it were done when ‘tis done, then ‘twere well it were done quickly’ monologue at the end of Act 1, submitted in audio or film format taking inspiration from Ralph’s. Maria Coulter, Deputy Head of BCS says: “We hope to invite Ralph back to critique some of their monologues, quite a bit of pressure to be placed under but an exciting opportunity for the students! We also are looking to combine a professional actor with the work of 14-year olds to produce Macbeth, in the future as we return to some normality. We would love to see how we can incorporate this work into the Shakespeare School festival”.

The CQC report highlights that Netley Court, part of the Cinnamon Care Collection, provides residents ‘with outstanding care and support and enabled them to live fulfilling lives. Residents were constantly at the heart of the service’. Feedback from residents and their families to the inspectors was that staff were ‘exceptionally caring’ and knew the residents well. One staff member summarised the care home’s ethos by telling the inspectors, ‘we all treat the residents as if they are our family’. The inspectors were impressed by the levels of staff training, the extensive activities programme, the high quality, nutritious food prepared by the award-winning chefs and the beautiful, clean and well maintained premises. They also praised Netley Court’s strong links with local healthcare professionals and the significant role it plays in the local community. According to Mark Shockledge, Senior General Manager, Netley Court, “We are thrilled to have been recognised as ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC. I was particularly pleased that the inspectors recognised our focus on meeting the individual needs of residents as this is core to our offering at Netley Court.” Based on Victoria Road in Netley, with views over Southampton Water, Netley Court provides residential care, respite care and specialist dementia care. HEARNES CONTINUE TO LEAD THE WAY! This is yet another indicator that the “online only“ agents are still no competition for the best “full-service“ agents. The only way of being confident that you are getting the best offer on your property is to ensure that it has been marketed fully. Hearnes are the agent that uses prodigious levels of newspaper and magazine advertising, prominent feature properties on the Internet, top quality photography and brochures combined with high levels of quality staff, ensuring the best possible customer experience. As a company Hearnes take almost 9 times as many pages of advertising than the average agent and more than double our nearest competitor. The results show that Hearnes’ traditional methods of marketing combined with modern technology and IT still provide the best results. Contact your local office to see how we can help you!

In a year which has seen various online agents go into administration and the largest “online only” agent increase their fees by 11% to try to reduce their losses (which rose to £56m) it is the High Street agents that continue to serve the local community best. In this area Hearnes are the agent that has once again quietly outsold every agent in the BH postcode area according to independent Rightmove figures for 2019. Hearnes have increased their leading margin over their nearest competitor from 94 in 2018, to 160 agreed sales, notwithstanding the fact their competitor has twice as many offices. Hearnes have also increased their overall market share once again.

It’s been a tough few weeks for everyone living with the lockdown measures, but we’re meeting the challenge head on. To make daily life easier we have safely delivered over 90 free care parcels to our wonderful homeowners, including those that are in self-isolation. The boxes contained a variety of essential food items such as fresh fruit and vegetables, milk and tinned goods. With a vibrant community of homeowners at every one of our retirement living locations, we’re supporting them as much as we possibly can through many new initiatives to boost health and wellbeing. At Platinum Skies, we’re here for our homeowners now and forever. The care parcels were warmly welcomed at our retirement living sites in Christchurch, Poole

DISPELLING MYTHS

This course is accredited by NCFE as Level 4. Graduates are awarded the HPD (Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma) and the DSFH (Diploma for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy).

We teach you all you need to know. Usually run at the beautiful Chilworth Manor Hotel & Training Centre, Southampton, over 10 monthly weekends. By the end of this course you will be a qualified Solution Focused Hypnotherapist.

One area which often needs clarification from our Property clients is the communal areas within the block and its contents. The Insurance policies that we offer as a broker include a minimum of £20,000 for contents for the communal areas. A common question we get asked is “What are communal areas and what would be covered?”

Course fees are £2,760 and can be paid monthly at £276 per month. Contact Lisa or Paul for an interview. We look forward to meeting you!

Communal areas are areas within a block of flats or an estate which all residents have a right to use and for which the Residential Management Company or Freeholder is responsible. These include communal hallways, shared stairways, landings, pathways and surrounding grounds.

For more information or to apply on line:

www.cphthampshire.co.uk

Some blocks of flat have larger communal areas, both internally and externally where they will have items such as tables and chairs, benches, pictures, rugs and plants which would all be covered under this insurance subject to an insured peril being the cause of a claim. Another question which we are frequently asked is “What is an insured peril?” An insured peril is a source or cause of damage or loss which is covered by your insurance policy which includes Fire, Theft/ Attempted Theft, Escape of Water, Accidental Damage, to name but a few. For further advise on our Property Policies or for a no obligation quote for your insurance please contact Stephanie Selby, Property Team Manager via the details below. Ways to tap into interiors inspiration during lockdown

There are still lots of ways to get creative with your decor, as interior designer Penny Ann Johnson tells Sam Wylie-Harris. The decor, pattern and colour we bring into our homes is often influenced by the things we see beyond our own four walls, when we’re out and about. Statement pieces that catch our eye, or simple style fixes like a new sofa or display cabinet to set the scene. It’s much easier to imagine how these things will sit and take shape when someone else has done the groundwork, and put all the bits and bobs together in a lovely showroom. So what does interiors inspiration look like during the #stayhomestaysafe era? Things may be very different right now, but tapping into our creative side can bring a host of benefits - for our wellbeing as well as breathing new life into our living spaces (where we’re spending a lot more time than usual!). And there’s still a realm of possibilities to explore, especially when you play around with existing household items, pick up a paintbrush, or introduce a few key pieces available online. Here, interior designer Penny Ann Johnson of Penny Ann Interiors, who will be appearing at Grand Designs Live 2020, shows how to get creative with your interiors while in isolation...

Create a picture wall “Picture walls are all the rage these days, a great way to fill that empty wall, show some self expression and make that space more homely. “Visit Amazon and search ‘Picture Gallery Frames’. There are some fab sets of 10-plus frames of varying sizes too, to help you create your picture wall. Have a think about what you’d like to put in your frames. “Pinterest is a great source for frame-able quotes, and these are a fab way to make the design feel more personal. Include some family photos - get them printed either via your home printer or a company like Snapfish, delivered to your door. Then get them hung, stand back and revel in the pride from seeing those important moments and people displayed beautifully in your home.” Check out posterstore.co.uk for inspiration.

Style up your space with statement art “Think smart with some statement art. In this uncertain world we’re all living in at the moment, support the little independent companies. Check out Etsy and search ‘Prints’. There are some fantastic artists, illustrators and designers, who are still working away to help you make your homes beautiful,” she suggests. “Artwork can be one of the most important parts to a room. It’s a talking point, and offers both the purchaser and onlooker the opportunity to think and express creatively. Find something that speaks to you, and look forward to that little package arriving from the outside world.”

CHILDREN – W H E N A R E L AT I O N S H I P BRE AKS DOWN AN AFFORDAB LE AND FULFILLING RE TIREMENT FOR ALL W I T H P L AT I N U M S K I E S

When a relationship breaks down it creates a whole new set of circumstances for you and your children. There will often be questions about where the children will live and how much time they will spend with each parent. This article sets out the legal position on such matters.

Local retirement specialist Gemma gives advice on the most affordable options

Do we have to go to court?

No, not usually. Parents are best placed to make decisions regarding their children. You do not have to go to court and ideally if there is a dispute you can resolve it through collaborative law or mediation. If you are unable to reach an agreement an application can be made to the court for a judge to decide.

At Platinum Skies, we know that retirement is an important next chapter in your life. It’s why we work hard to make our beautiful new homes truly affordable through our Government backed, shared ownership scheme.

Does the court favour the mother or father?

Neither. There is a presumption that, provided it is safe to do so, both mum and dad should be involved in the child’s life. The court’s focus is on the child and what is in their “best interests”. Shared care orders whereby the child lives with both parents are increasingly common.

This also allows our owners to securely access equity from their previous property, while retaining a long-term property investment with us. Each of our Platinum Skies locations (Christchurch, Poole, Salisbury and Sherborne) are well placed near to amenities and beautiful scenery to offer you a happy, healthy and wealthy retirement.

What child support is payable?

In the first instance, parents are expected to agree the amount of maintenance to be paid for the children (a family based child arrangement). If they are unable to do so then responsibility for determining the correct amount rests with the Child Maintenance Service. There are some limited circumstances when it is appropriate for the court to make orders for child maintenance. The court also deals with the payment of school fees.

When you first walk through the door, you’ll feel a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. We’ve created a wide-range of lifestyle services that bring the best in activity, entertainment and well-being. This can be seen in the diverse activities on offer in our communal lounges and the ever-changing menu of delicious, healthy cuisine to enjoy in our bistros.

It is sensible to take legal advice at an early stage to assist you when discussing arrangements with the other parent. For further advice on any of these issues please contact Helen Cort in BDB Pitmans’ specialist family team in Southampton on 02380 837707.

Marwell Zoo’s animals need your help… Hampshire conservation charity Marwell Wildlife has launched a fundraising campaign to help cover animal costs during the coronavirus shutdown. Marwell Zoo near Winchester is currently closed to guests however it is business as usual for a dedicated team of zookeepers, vets and scientists. They are working tirelessly to ensure the zoo’s animals, many of which are endangered species and part of important global breeding programmes, receive the same high level of care and attention.

It is hoped the fundraising drive will help with the zoo’s daily animal expenses such as feed, bedding and heating while the zoo is unable to receive income from visitors. The 140-acre wildlife park is home to hundreds of animals, from endangered Amur tigers, snow leopards and white rhinos to giraffes, gibbons and penguins. Launching the campaign, which has already received more than £1,500 in donations, Marwell Wildlife Chief Executive James Cretney, said: “While Marwell Zoo is closed to our guests, we want to reassure you that we are keeping the care and welfare of our animals as our highest priority. Our talented teams including keepers, vets, scientists, maintenance workers and landscapers are working tirelessly to ensure there is no interruption to the dedicated and compassionate care each and every animal receives, and we are in awe of their energy during this unsettling time.

“Every penny adds up and so does our gratitude, so thank you for your loyal support - Marwell simply couldn't do what we do without you!” To donate or to find out more about the campaign, please go to https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/ supportMarwell Marwell Zoo, home to more than 140 species, is owned by Marwell Wildlife, a global conservation charity leading programmes in the UK, Africa and across the world. The charity engages with over 50,000 schoolchildren through curriculum-based education programmes and welcomes more than 500,000 visitors each year to its 140-acre site. Photos by Jason Brown

“Marwell relies on day ticket, membership, retail and catering sales; things we are no longer receiving; in order to operate. We are reducing non-essential expenses, but we simply cannot do the same for the daily care all our animals need. We are so grateful for all the kind wishes and offers of support and we feel incredibly lucky to be part of your community for nearly 50 years. You can help us through these difficult times. Your generosity will ensure we can go the extra mile caring for the animals so that future generations can experience the joy of coming to the zoo, and knowing what we can do for conservation here in the UK and the world. “We are asking for donations through our Just Giving page, as this platform also enables us to take Gift Aid. If you are a UK taxpayer please tick the Gift Aid option to increase your donation at no extra cost to you.

Easy cocktails to make at home Check out these cheeky cocktails and snazzy serves, says Sam Wylie-Harris. Looking for easy cocktails to make at home? Spirits such as gin, vodka and rum are the flavours of signature cocktails - and there's nothing to say you can't enjoy something a little bit fancy from the comfort of your own living room. Budding mixologists might already have mastered the art of flaring, spinning, smiling and flicking - just some of the showy traits of a seasoned barman - but if your cocktail-making skills only go as far as pouring a mixer into a glass and fumbling for a slice of lime, there couldn't be a better time to experiment. Here's seven easy cocktails to try at home...

Melodist London Dry Gin & Tonic A gin that's beautifully in tune with springtime, along with classic juniper, botanicals include coriander and angelica. But what we really love about Tesco's eyecatching and deliciously refreshing Finest The Melodist London Dry Gin (ÂŁ20, 70cl, Tesco) are the 'top notes of yuzu and green tea for a distinctive, characterful symphony' - or in two words, ace aromatics.

And it's easy to up your tonic game by pairing it with one of these little gems from the library of Merchant's Heart range of premium mixers - designed to enhance and elevate the core characteristics of a gin, rather than drown it. Selected tonics available from Sainsbury's (ÂŁ1.30, 20cl) or visit Merchant's Heart Shop. ING REDIENTS 50ml Melodist Gin, premium tonic water. METHOD Half fill a copa glass with quality ice cubes, add the gin, top with tonic, stir slowly and garnish with a sprig of thyme to bring out the floral aromas.

Diablesse Caribbean Sour If you fancy a shot of sunshine in a glass, Diablesse Caribbean Rum (ÂŁ35.26, 70cl, Master of Malt) is a blend of three rums with hints of vanilla, butterscotch, banana and pineapple, with a rich, fruity, spicy core of tropical fruits. Here's how to pretty one up and while away a lazy afternoon... ING REDIENTS 40ml Diablesse Caribbean Rum, 10ml pimento liqueur, 25ml lemon juice, 20ml honey water (1:1 honey to water), 25ml egg white. METHOD Add the ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Dry shake once without ice then again with ice. Strain into a wine glass or over ice if you prefer. Garnish with a white flower.

Grey Goose Leafy Green We're still a few weeks away from elderflower season, but you can't call yourself a cocktail lover without a bottle of elderflower cordial or liqueur in the drinks cabinet. Marry it with the herbal sweetness of Chartreuse and almond and citrus notes of Grey Goose Original Vodka (ÂŁ33.65, 70cl, 31 Dover), and you'll be mixing with the best company. ING REDIENTS 35ml Grey Goose, 15ml elderflower cordial, 15ml fresh lime juice, dash of Chartreuse (if available), dash of soda water. METHOD Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the spirits and juices, shake vigorously and strain over ice in a highball glass. Top with soda and garnish with a celery stick.

Bathtub Pink Lemonade Punch Take a juniper rich gin such as Bathtub Gin (ÂŁ33.95, 70cl, Master of Malt), cited as 'a most unusual but quite entrancing gin' with top notes of cardamom and orange blossom, flanked by hints of cinnamon and orange peel. Combine it with sweet strawberry notes and tangy raspberry aromas of flavoured tea - and you've built a bright, juicy and refreshing punch. ING REDIENTS (SERVES 4 TO 6) 250ml Bathtub Gin, 375ml brewed & chilled Strawberry Raspberry Tea, 500ml fresh lemonade, 75ml simple syrup. METHOD Half fill a punch bowl or pitcher with large chunks of ice and frozen strawberries. Add the gin, tea and syrup, top with lemonade and garnish with floating lemon slices and lavender.

St-Germain Spritz A perennial favourite on the aperitif scene, you can't beat the scented aromas and flavours of StGermain Elderflower Liqueur (ÂŁ22.99, 70cl, Distillers Direct), especially when it collides so beautifully with your best bubbles. ING REDIENTS Ingredients: 40ml St-Germain, 60ml sparkling wine (prosecco, cremant or champagne), 60ml sparkling water. METHOD Half fill a tall glass with ice. Add the sparkle, then liqueur and top with fizzy water. Stir slowly and garnish with a lemon twist.

CIROC Classic Twist Mmm, those martini moments! More time indoors means the freedom to lavish a little more attention on sophisticated, short drinks and, best of all, minimal ingredients. Take a good base spirit such as CIROC Vodka (£29.98, 70cl, Drinks Direct) made from fine, French grapes and partner it with vermouth and bitters - a fasttrack to making downtime feel like you're going uptown. ING REDIENTS 50ml CIROC Vodka, 15ml dry vermouth, 2-3 dashes orange bitters, 5 x seedless grapes. METHOD Half fill a mixing glass with ice. Muddle grapes, add ingredients, stir and fine strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with silver skewered frozen grapes. Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

No prizes for guessing this should really be sipped within a hop, skip and jump from the beach, but there's no reason why you can't bury your feet in the kids' sandpit and dream of island life. With this recipe using Dead Man's Fingers Coconut Rum (£20.89, 70cl), and Dead Man's Fingers Pineapple Rum (£23.99, 70cl, both available from DrinkSupermarket.com), think tropical flavours of coconut meets sweet notes of candied pineapple, balanced by citrusy lime... You'll want to dive right in. ING REDIENTS 30ml Dead Man's Fingers Coconut Rum, 25ml Dead Man's Fingers Pineapple Rum, 50ml pineapple juice, 25ml Coco Lopez Coconut Cream, 10ml lime juice, 3 dashes Angostura Bitters, pinch of sea salt. METHOD Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add ingredients, shake vigorously and strain into a tiki mug or tall glass and fill with cubed ice, then cap with crushed ice. Garnish with a pineapple leaf and pineapple wedge.

5 Ways to Protect Your Family’s Future At Any Age By Jeremy Tucker, Head of Private Client at Dutton Gregory Solicitors 1. Make A Will By making a Will you are choosing to protect your family in the future. You can choose who will; receive your assets on you death, become guardians of your children, administer your estate and act as executor, and possibly save tax for your loved ones. Here at Dutton Gregory, we advise on the key decisions to consider when making your Will, and how to reduce the likelihood of it being challenged on your death. 2. Choose a Lasting Power of Attorney If you were to lose your mental capacity with no Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, your financial and property affairs would be handled by a Deputy appointed by the Court of Protection, rather than someone you would have chosen. This can be a lengthy and expensive process, but we are here to help, guiding you through all the options, to assist you to appoint someone of your choice to look after your affairs. 3. Save Tax - Estate/ Wealth Tax Planning Where the value of a person’s estate exceeds the “nil rate” band (currently £325,000) Inheritance Tax (‘IHT’) may be payable at 40% on the excess. However, by careful arrangement of your affairs it is possible to save considerable amounts of tax. Our team are here to help you navigate the various reliefs exemptions available, including the use of trusts.

4. Avoid The Pitfalls of Estate Administration When a person dies, someone has to take charge of dealing with their estate. If there is a Will, this will usually be the executors. If there is no Will, the intestacy provisions set out who is entitled to the estate. Our experts will safely guide you through the process, helping you avoid the pitfalls of being an executor, and alert you to any tax planning opportunities that may arise. 5. The nation turns to home baking during lockdown The nation has turned to baking to cope with the lockdown with cheese scones, apple and rhubarb crumble and sponge cake topping the list of favourites, according to the National Trust. Recipe downloads on the charity’s website show that since the country was locked down in mid-March, visits to home bake pages have increased by almost 900% compared with the same time last year. Cheese scones are top of the list with more than 54,000 people visiting the page in the first four weeks of lockdown – an increase of 3,009% on last year. Coming in at second place is apple and rhubarb crumble with nearly 15,000 visits (an increase of 581%) and the popular National Trust fruit scone is in third place at almost 10,000 visits (an increase of 737%).

Gluten-Free Strawberry & Hazelnut Meringue

SERVES 8-10

INGREDIENTS

1. Preheat the oven to 170C (150C fan). Grease and line a 24cm springform cake tin.

210g skinned hazelnuts 6 large free-range eggs, separated 180g caster sugar

2. Place the nuts in a dry frying pan and toast over low heat, shaking the pan, until starting to brown. Cool and then pulse in a food processor until they are coarsely ground.

250ml double cream, whipped 250g strawberries, hulled and halved Icing sugar, for dusting

3. Using an electric mixer or hand-held electric beaters, whisk the egg yolks and caster sugar until pale and very thick - this should take about three to four minutes. Gently stir in the ground hazelnuts. 4. Whisk the egg whites in a clean, dry bowl with hand-held electric beaters until firm peaks form, then gently fold them into the hazelnut mixture with a large metal spoon. Spoon into the prepared tin, then transfer to the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until firm to the touch and slightly shrunk away from the side of the tin. 5. Leave to cool for about 15 minutes, then carefully remove the outside of the tin and cool completely on a wire rack (it will probably sink a little). 6. When the meringue is cold, cut it in half horizontally and fill with whipped cream and half the strawberries. Dust the top with icing sugar and decorate with the remaining strawberries. Visit one of most remote towns in Siberia, sizzle in a traditional Russian sauna (known as a banya), discover the Kremlin Fortress in Kazan and dog sled across the deepest lake in the world, Lake Baikal, frozen solid at this time of year. MAKE IT A REALITY: Golden Eagle Luxury Trains (goldeneagleluxurytrains.com; 0161 928 9410) offers the Trans-Siberian Winter Wonderland By Steam trip from ÂŁ14,495pp (two sharing) including 17 nights onboard and four nights hotel accommodation, with all food, drink, guiding and transfers included. International flights extra. Departs February 25, 2021. HOW TO PREPARE: It's not the easiest language to master, but try learning a bit of Russian lingo before you depart. Download lessons from online educational resource Babbel (uk.babble.com), designed to arm students with essential and useful phrases using speech recognition for pronunciation. Access for three months costs ÂŁ20.99.

Make winter tracks across Siberia Watching the world unfurl whilst trundling along train tracks is the epitome of slow, nostalgic travel. Long distance railway journeys provide an opportunity to discover the lay of a land in detail, often accessing offgrid areas and communities - all done from the comfort of a hotel-on-wheels. The Trans-Siberian is intrepid at the best of times, but a winter departure pushes boundaries even further. Crossing snowy steppes, mountain ranges and eight times zones, the sumptuous Golden Eagle will cover 10,000km, pulled by various steam locomotives.

Form family bonds on a South African safari Anyone remotely interested in wildlife should do an African safari at least once in their lives. Chances are you'll want to go back again and again. Reassuringly malaria-free, South Africa is a good choice for families, and prices are much more reasonable too. Highly intelligent and credited for their strong social bonds, elephants are a favourite to observe in the wild. Expect to see plenty at Addo Main Camp, on the fringes of Addo Elephant National Park on the Cape, close to Port Elizabeth. Hailed as excellent for children, the collection of caravans, tents, chalets and rondavels have access to cooking facilities, a swimming pool, bird hide and floodlit watering hole where animals come to drink at night. Visitors can explore in their own vehicles without a guide (keeping down costs), although the camp also offers 4WD safaris.

Discover the big blue in Egypt or Indonesia Nature has been one of the few beneficiaries of lockdown: skies are bluer, birdsong is louder and fish stocks are recovering as trawlers are forced to rest. Very soon the seas will be even more colourful and active, making a dive holiday a top priority to book. The Red Sea is an affordable and accessible option; Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh resort on the Sinai Peninsula is ideally located to explore dazzling Ras Mohammed National Park. Further afield, Indonesian archipelago Raja Ampat is the epicentre of the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse marine environment on earth. MAKE IT A REALITY: Dive specialist, PADI Travel (travel. padi.com), offer various trips to both locations: six nights B&B at the Camel Dive Club And Hotel in Sharm El Sheikh costs from £463pp; six nights B&B at the Meridian Adventure in Raja Ampat costs from £1,586pp. Both trips include a PADI Open Water course, although international flights are excluded.

HOW TO PREPARE: The Open Water course has both theory and practical elements. No one wants to be sat in a classroom when the sun is blazing and underwater art galleries are beckoning, so maximise dive time by doing the theory element of the Open Water course at home. PADI (padi.com) offer the Open Water Theory eLearning from £96.41. Savour wilderness with the kids in Scotland If isolation has sparked a fondness for back-to-basics living, consider a camping trip for your next family getaway; considerably cheaper than staying in a hotel or cottage, a holiday under canvas is a practical option all round and proof dreams can be realised closer to home. Scenery, solitude and sheer space make Scotland ripe for adventure. Steps away from the beach, Runach Arainn on the Isle of Arran is a three-yurt glamping site adorned with creature comforts; Wheems Organic Farm on Orkney has a mixture of yurts, sheepskin-lined bothies and meadows for tent pitching available.

True boy scouts and girl guides might consider wild camping. Thanks to the 2003 Land Reform Act, it's possible to pitch a tent on most unenclosed land (although byelaws do apply to East Loch Lomond). Don’t just take our word for it, read our client testimonials... Thank you Brown and Kay. I am a Landlord that has used there letting services for six years and I can Honestly say they can not do enough to get things done. Kim and the team they are professional and friendly if you are looking to rent or like in my case let your property give them a call, it can be hard to find a good agent. A big thank you to Kim and the team at Brown and Kay.

So far my experience with Brown & Kay has been the most personable experience I have had with an estate agent. I feel like there is a level of personal care and attention for things as well as being accommodating to any questions. Thanks for being awesome!

We have today completed on the sale of my late mother’s flat and I cannot recommend Stephen Kay and his team highly enough. The attention we received was second to none. Fantastic!

Professional and helpful. My wife and I both found Brown & Kay extremely discrete and professional in the service they offered. Always mindful of our needs as sellers and the impact that house viewings can have on our busy lives. Without taking anything away from the rest of the team, we found Ed Pitcher specifically in tune with our overall house selling and buying goals. Having previously (and unsuccessfully) used another Westbourne estate agent of the ‘faceless-chain-type’ - Brown & Kay’s independent status brought caring professionalism to a relatively swift sale for us. Thank you guys!

Thanks initially to Kate being ‘on it’, we found our dream home through Brown & Kay. We dealt with the purchase through Ed whose patience I’m sure we tried on many occasions but who was the consummate professional throughout! It was a pleasure to deal with Brown & Kay: they were friendly, helpful and efficient every step of the way and couldn’t do enough pre and post purchase to ensure our relocation was as smooth as possible. Thank you!

T H E W O N K Y TA B L E Just over a month on from the government closure of hospitality businesses and the beginning of the countrywide lockdown, I want to extend our warmest wishes to everyone during what is truly one of the toughest times we will see in our lifetime.

C OVI D -19 RENT ARREARS Well, here we are over a month on and coming to the

Hospitality owners and operators are becoming increasingly reliant on the government’s financial support and with tourism being one of the leading economical revenue streams in Bournemouth and all along the South Coast it is vital that business owners are able to access the support they so desperately need to survive.

end of our second round of a 3-week lockdown. At Move On we have still been extremely busy behind the scenes making sure emergency maintenance issues have been dealt with, still organising Gas Safety Certificates and we have managed successfully to complete on the move ins and move outs that were already in the system prior to the lockdown.

From a small “group of mates discussing the ‘what just happened’ moment when we were closed” and following a desire to help the wider community to make the most of Government’s Grant availability, accessing and dealing with the Job Retention Scheme and pooling thoughts and fears on “the Phased Return”, The Wonky Table was born. The group has now spread across the whole conurbation including Christchurch, Poole, Bournemouth and Wimborne. Now with over 80 Hospitality Owner/Operator participants representing over 140+ venues from all over the conurbations the group is growing every day.

Our focus has been on connecting with our tenants and landlords offering any help that they may need. Our rent arrears generally sit at around 2% something we have always been proud of, and my accounts manager Christine, is just amazing at being on the phone to tenants when they are just one day late. We have made sure we are sympathetic to their situation and guide them through the financial help that is out there. We are currently sitting at just under 5% of rent arrears, this may rise a little more, but overall, I am optimistic with what the government is offering to help renters, is working.

Staying connected is more important than ever. I only set the group up to share some thoughts back in March but TWT is getting bigger and bigger, we now want to make public our existence with all those in the Hospitality Industry in the hope that we can unite to share knowledge, resources and advice. The next step is getting ready (and making sure everyone is ready) for Post-C19. Ultimately, if there has ever been a time for us to come together, it is now.

I have been humbled at the response of some of our landlords who have either voluntarily offered a reduced rent over a 1 to 3-month period or given a whole month free. We have had tenants brought to tears at the generosity and are so very thankful. We are certainly in challenging times and each of us will experience it differently. Please keep well and safe.

The Wonky Table welcomes all Hospitality owners and operators in the area and is a collective promise to give the industry the voice it needs to return with the strongest possible footing. For more information and to join the group, search for “The Wonky Table” on Facebook.

INTERIORS | THE PULLING POWER OF PINK

From classy candyf loss to pale blush...

How to work pink at home!

Surprisingly versatile and super-sophisticated, Sam Wylie-Harris explores the pulling power of pink. Pink comes into its own in springtime - and we’re not just talking fragrant blooms and bridesmaids’ dresses. From soft, dusty hues to the palest blush, pink is one of the most playful shades to bring into your home, and you don’t need to be in the first throes of love to embrace a pink palate. Indeed, this season’s candy crush isn’t all saccharine sweet, and neither does it delve into Barbie territory. Pink interiors can be super-sophisticated and subtle, and styled to bring beauty and radiance without having to go over the top. This is all about shifting our perceptions on how to ‘think pink.’ “The colour pink evokes sophistication and playfulness. This romantic shade can instantly bring a subtle sense of femininity into your home, through the use of accessories and homewares,” says Claire Hornby, head of creative at Barker and Stonehouse furniture designers.

THE PULLING POWER OF PINK | INTERIORS

“You’ll be surprised how easy it is to create a fresh and airy living space when using pink to style your space. What I love about this colour is that you don’t have to completely redecorate to be able to introduce this palette.” Adding pink accents “Whether you want to add bold pops of bright pink or duskier pinks for a neutral feel, it’s possible to transform your space with key furniture pieces and accessories,” says Hornby. “Add a burst of colour and opt for a gorgeous armchair in a soft rose hue, or if you want to experiment further, a showstopping sofa with a mid-century design would look wonderful. “To balance the look and to keep it light, complement your pink pieces with lots of white for a timeless and versatile look. “Alternatively, if you’re looking to enhance an existing neutral palette, introduce dusty pink cushions and smaller accessories, such as tealight holders, throws or vases,” Hornby suggests.

THE PULLING POWER OF PINK | INTERIORS

Table dressing in pink If you’re still feeling a bit shy about adding a permanent dose of pink, you can always set the scene with a pink tablecloth, which can quickly be cleared away - and a stylish solution to investing in something more serious and sophisticated. It’ll also work beautifully with rose wine season coming into full swing, as we drink pink for the foreseeable future. Pimp up your pink Of course, putting pink in the spotlight doesn’t mean having to create a whole canvas of rosy hues. And if you’re worried about a pop of pink having a short shelf life, you can always give the look a modern edge by layering, intensifying and styling with a shot of electric pink.

Think bubble-gum pink candles, a cloud of candy floss in one particular corner of a room and A-list trimmings - cushions and throws are a good starting point. A lampshade or curtain tie-back made out of flamenco pink feathers or electric-pink pom-poms are always top of our wish list. Laying down a pink path “Flooring is the perfect place for pink, as it creates an on-trend base that can be built upon and transformed instantly with a few considered accessories,” says Jemma Dayman, buyer for carpets at Carpetright. To create a calming and tranquil atmosphere, she suggests opting for carpet in a soft, blush shade, which can be warmed up with statement furnishings. INTERIORS | THE PULLING POWER OF PINK

“If you’re keen on pink but aren’t sure you’d like a complete scheme, a contemporary rug is an affordable way to add a dash of colour without the commitment,” advises Dayman. “Allow yourself to have a little fun with your rug choice and opt for something you’ll love for years to come; it may stay in the same room but you might also find yourself moving it to another place as your tastes change. “Rugs allow for personality to shine through, whether you’re opting for a whimsical novelty pattern or an art deco inspired geometric design.” Pick a pink paint “Neutral and muted tones of pink are complex and add areas of interest, yet they’re easy to live with,” says Judy Smith, colour consultant for Crown Paints. “Pink looks particularly sophisticated and smart when used as a backdrop to contemporary natural materials and most modern furniture designs. “Pink works really well with cool neutrals, such as brilliant whites and all tones of grey - from light to moody,” she adds. “The choice depends on what type of look you’d like to create - bold and dramatic, or cool and restful. If you want to create a warmer space, try pairing neutral pink with either earthy terracotta shades or a warm cherry.” To create a dramatic scheme and make sure pink looks up to date and edgy, Smith suggests adding touches of black or charcoal, perhaps in fine outlines on the wall, woodwork or in furniture. “It brings this soft tone more into focus and makes it look fresh and modern. The pink and charcoal colour combination is also incredibly versatile and can easily be adapted to suit all types of styles, from industrial chic to minimal Scandi or modern country,” Smith adds. Ways to style a small garden or outside space Only got a dinky yard or balcony? You can still transform it into a dream garden, as awardwinning designer Ula Maria tells Hannah Stephenson. Wondering how to style a small garden? Whether you have a roof terrace, balcony, small back yard or patio, you can still create a dream design with some thoughtful planting and innovative additions, says award-winning designer, Ula Maria. “Try to understand your space and what will grow there, the light levels, how much sun you get and where the shade falls, as well as the type of soil you have to work with,” says the former RHS Young Designer of the Year, whose new book, Green, offers design ideas for small spaces. “Take inspiration and learn from nature, whether it’s artwork for colour or an aspect of past holidays, or something else which has inspired you,” she adds.

2. Contemporary Mediterranean Use materials such as graphic tiles, presenting them in a contemporary way, she advises. Look for companies which sell reclaimed tiles and furniture for ideas. “You don’t have to do a whole wall. You could cover one section of a wall, creating an artwork,” Maria suggests. If you have a busy wall, you may want to play safe with planting, sticking to green rather than going for a eyepopping colour contrast. “Try not to introduce more than two colours at a time, and see how it works. Ferns are good stalwarts. If you are using busy tiles, keep the planting simple.”

How big should the plants be in a small space? “Don’t be too scared to bring in larger plants, because they always seem to make a small space appear grander,” says Maria. “If you are worried that planting a big tree may block your light, think about another statement plant, such as a tall grass. If you have a balcony garden, you may just want to include tall-growing perennials or something that will make a big impact.” The book features a mixture of small and innovative gardens offering a range of design ideas. Here, Maria shares tips on five styles for inspiration... 1. Balcony garden Merge florals inside with the balcony outside, she suggests, maybe in the form of a chair covered with a floral material which echoes the flora and fauna on your balcony. “It’s important to make the transition between inside and outside seem as seamless as possible,” says Maria. Place houseplants close to the window of your balcony to enhance that connection and blur the boundary between outside and in.

MORGAN ANNIVERSARY MODELS The Morgan Motor Company has built the first of its limited-run Plus4 70th Anniversary Edition models. Only 20 examples will be produced, priced at £60,995. Built to celebrate 70 years of Plus4 production, each of the anniversary models will be individually numbered and built in a unique specification and feature an individually numbered plaque, marking them out as some of the last steel-chassis Plus4 models. A specially embroidered headrest will further differentiate the edition. Platinum Metallic paint – a platinum anniversary being a celebration of 70 years – complements the satin dark grey wire wheels, while a motorsport-inspired front valance and exterior black pack including a black stone guard, A-pillars and sidescreens form a purposeful aesthetic. Inside the car, the leather interior is further enhanced by a Ravenwood veneer dashboard, dark grey box weave carpets and a satin black Mota-Lita steering wheel. Other specified extras include a leather-trimmed steering cowl and door handles, mohair hood cover, and sidescreen storage bags. To match the 70th Anniversary Edition’s dynamic look, its performance and distinctive engine note have been enhanced. The cars come with an engine map configured by Aero Racing, Morgan’s in-house motorsport specialists, raising power from 154 hp to 180 bp and taking its 0-60 mph acceleration time down to under seven seconds. The cars are also fitted with an Aero Racing sports exhaust, finished with a ceramic-black tail pipe.

R O A D T E S T: M A Z D A C X- 3 0 S E - L The compact SUV market is crowded with contenders and almost all the manufacturers are eager to get a slice of a very lucrative sales boom, writes NICK FLETCHER. Mazda, which already has CX-3 and CX-5 models in the SUV arena now offers the CX-30, which slots between the two and perhaps ideally would have been called the CX-4 but that title was not available as Mazda had already used it elsewhere. The CX-30 comes with a choice of two 2.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol engines which use an electric motor and lithium battery to enhance efficiency and improve response. Both engines come with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a 6-speed automatic an option.

class standards, and top speed is 116 mph. Average fuel economy is good at 45.6 mpg and emissions are 116 g/km. The sleek styling gives the CX-30 a lower more potent-looking image than most SUV rivals and it feels more of a driver’s car thanks to well-weighted and responsive steering, short-action gearshift and firmer suspension setting. You get minimal body lean on tight corners and reassuring grip and composure. Inside, the cabin looks very smart with quality trim materials and there is a rotary controller with short-cut buttons making

the infotainment unit easier to operate. All models get DAB radio, Bluetooth, sat-nav and smartphone mirroring, plus rear parking sensors which are especially useful as the CX-30 has a smaller rear screen than most so visibility is limited. Standard safety kit includes auto emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assistance and a driver attention alert system. The lower roof line means slightly less rear headroom but otherwise occupant space is fine and seating comfortable, though when it comes to luggage space, the 430 litre capacity of the CX-30 is less than that of rivals such as the Skoda Karoq and SEAT Ateca. Summing up, the CX-30 has more sporty styling and much better handling than most and for some potential buyers in the image-conscious compact SUV sector, that may atone for its slightly smaller interior capacity.

There is a sporty 178 hp engine but my featured model is the popular 120 hp SE-L entry-level version which with manual gearbox is priced at ÂŁ22,895. The 0-60 mph time is 11.2 seconds, not that quick by

R O A D T E S T: J EEP REN EGAD E LO N G IT U D E Jeep is a legendary motoring brand dating back to the 1940s and still going strong today as part of the giant FiatChrysler group. Among current Jeep models the Renegade, a small SUV, is a popular choice, writes NICK FLETCHER. It is neat, nimble and practical but above all has an unmistakable profile with its big wide trademark Jeep grille, tall stance and tough looks. Available with petrol, diesel and hybrid power-trains, and in both 2WD and 4WD form and choice of auto and manual gearboxes, the Renegade range starts at £19,745. The entry level 1.0 litre turbo-petrol engine packs a zestful 118 hp and in 2WD form and with 6-speed manual gearbox has a respectable 0-60 mph time of 11.2 seconds, top speed of 115 mph and average fuel economy of 46.3 mpg. Emissions are 138 g/km.

Standard kit includes air conditioning, a touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth and digital radio and safety features include lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition. The featured Longitude model, priced at £22,445, has extra kit which includes cruise control, sat-nav, automatic climate control, rear parking sensors and enhanced connectivity. While the Renegade has stand-out exterior styling, the cabin is visually more muted but offers a very practical layout with easyto-operate controls. The higher driving position gives good forward visibility and underway, the steering has intuitive feedback. The suspension is well-balanced to be firm off-road yet comfortable on urban streets.

130

Renegade can seat five if necessary though four are more comfortable and everyone gets adequate head and leg room. The boot space of 351 litres is not largest in the class but drop the rear seats and you get a substantial 1,297 litres. And unlike most rivals, the front passenger seat also folds down to accommodate longer items. The small SUV sector is crammed with worthy contenders, among them the Renault Captur, Suzuki Vitara, SEAT Arona and the MINI Countryman. Some are prettier, some more fluent to drive, and some better-built – notably the MINI Countryman – but none are as distinctive nor as characterful as the Jeep Renegade which has great appeal to those seeking to be more individual. Overall it is a pleasing compact family SUV with strong visual charisma.

N E W Š KO DA O C TAV I A SKODA says its new Octavia is longer, wider, more spacious, safer, and better connected than its predecessor. And for the first time, the Octavia line-up includes a plug-in hybrid, the Octavia iV, as well as the Octavia vRS iV.

R O A D T E S T: S U B A R U X V E - B O X E R Subaru’s compact crossover XV model now comes with a new powertrain, the e-Boxer, which combines an electric motor with all-wheel drive. Priced from £31,655, it uses a lithium-ion battery mounted within the boot floor and allows for pure-electric driving at speeds of up to 25mph, writes NICK FLETCHER. A 2.0 litre petrol unit, mated to CVT automatic transmission, delivers 148 hp, a 0-60 mph time of 10.7 seconds and top speed of 120 mph. Emissions are 180 g/km, average fuel economy 35.8 mpg. The XV e-Boxer has a comfortable ride on urban roads and copes well in smoothing out bumps and ruts on rougher surfaces. Its higher ground clearance compared with most rivals and its 4WD system means it can also deal with offroad mud and rocks which gives it a distinct advantage in the compact SUV sector. The cabin is nicefuly styled and finished with durable materials, and well-equipped with touchscreen infortainment including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reversing camera, auto lights and wipers, and roof rails. It offers space for

five adults and a good boot space of 385 litres, expandable to 1,290 litres by folding the rear seats. It also comes with a suite of driver-assist and safety features as standard: EyeSight driver assist technology functions optically using two stereo cameras which are mounted either side of the rearview mirror. It monitors for hazards up to 110 metres ahead and includes: Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Sway and Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection identifies vehicles approaching from the rear. It offers three main functions to improve visibility and to help minimise common causes for accidents: Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Rivals in its sector include the SEAT Ateca, Volkswagen T-Roc and Nissan Qashqai and while they arguably may offer sharper overall driving dymanics and better fuel econmy, the Subaru XV’s all-wheel-drive and outstanding off-road capability give it a more practical and versatile edge.

131

In the Octavia iV, a 1.4 TSI petrol engine and an electric motor deliver a combined power output of 201 hp and the high-voltage lithium-ion battery allows for an electric range of up to 18 miles. Some of the petrol engines are now equipped with mild hybrid technology while the diesel engines come from the latest EVO generation and emit up to 80 per cent less nitrogen oxide. The Octavia offers a choice of four infotainment systems from the latest generation with screens measuring from 8.25 to 10 inches. Some of them can be operated using gesture control or by voice. The Octavia is always online thanks to a built-in eSIM, enabling access to the latest ŠKODA Connect mobile online services. The car also features up to five USB-C ports and Smartphones can be charged inductively using the optional Phone Box. New Octavia prices start at £19,685.

With exceptional buildquality, sports styling and classic rearwheel-drive, the model made an enduring mark on the motoring landscape, and continues to do so. The latest BMW 3 Series range starts at £30,995 for an SE model and features petrol, diesel and hybrid variants, the option of four wheel drive and flagship M Sport performance versions. The featured model is the entry-level SE version and powered by a 2.0 litre 156 hp engine mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. On the safety front, features include auto emergency braking, lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition. It’s a very good all-round package for an entry level car. While rear visibility is slightly hampered by thick rear pillars, it is not a problem as reversing sensors and a rear-view camera are standard. Boot space is 480 litres, again slightly larger than that of its main rivals. You can also push down the rear seat backs to facilitate loading longer items. Competition in this important executive sector is tight between BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz and might pose something of a quandary for some buyers, but in my view the BMW is the choice for those who put the driving dynamics first.
