RIVERSIDE COURT

YO U N G C A R E R S ’ Dorset based charity, MYTime Young Carers is urging runners to join in with the 10k event in the ‘Run Bournemouth Festival’. The festival takes place over the weekend of 3rd and 4th October 2020, with the 10K race taking place on Sunday 4th October at 4pm.

Burns Hamilton are pleased to announce their instruction to manage riverside Court, a 45-unit retirement property in Tuckton. Having been handed the management of the site by the developers, the residents went about finding a new managing agent to assist them and following a selection process chose Burns Hamilton as their new agents. Following the appointment, Miss Morris a Director of the Resident’s Management Company stated, “Since transferring the management of our site to Burns Hamilton, we have found them to be an extremely efficient Company. If any queries arise their response is immediate. Going through the budget they produced for us, they managed to identify a number of cost savings and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to any residential development as Managing Agents.”

MYTime Executive Director, Krista Cartlidge said, “We would love to encourage as many people as possible to consider running for us. We are putting together a team for the ‘Supersonic 10K’ race and would love to see a ‘sea’ of runners, all in their MYTime t shirts – what a statement that would make for the charity!” Anyone wishing to join the MYTime 10k team is urged to enter and register for an official place via www.runbournemouth. com and to list MYTime as their nominated charity.

If you require any assistance with the management of your property, then please do not hesitate to give us a call.

A group of health care providers across Dorset are working together on a new project focusing on sharing end of life experiences thanks to a one-off grant of £40,000 made by Dorset Clinical Commissioners. Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Forest Holme Hospice, Dorset Health Care and Lewis Manning Hospice Care will be collaborating to focus on making it easier for people approaching the end of life, and their families, to share their experiences, learn from and support each other. The group have also teamed up with Care Opinion (www.careopinion.org.uk) to make it easy for people to share their experiences in their own words online. Clare Gallie, CEO of LewisManning Hospice Care, said: “This project will help us to understand what our patients really want and allow us to focus our support on what really matters to them’’. Palliative and end of life care staff will be invited to respond (including online) to people who have shared their stories. This has been shown in other areas to have a positive impact on staff morale, confidence and sense of purpose at work. The group, including people with lived experience of care at end of life, is also working with values specialist Jackie LeFèvre to understand what stories tell us about what’s most important to us. Saskie Dorman, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust who is based at Forest Holme Hospice, Seldown Road, Poole, explained: “The current standard surveys and requests for feedback from families and patients are relatively impersonal. We don’t learn as much as we could or should from people’s experiences, both what went well and what needs to improve. This work will help us to learn directly from the stories and experiences shared about what’s important to people about their care and support, what’s working well and what needs to be improved.”

Located east of Dorchester, the 11-hectare, south-facing vineyard at Crawthorne was planted in 2009 with a mixture of Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier.

HELP SUPPORT OUR TEAMS!

FOR LEWIS-MANNING

Bournemouth Sports FC is a FA Charter Standard Development Club, which offers in excess of 350 people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to develop their love of football in a friendly, inclusive environment at our home ground of Chapel Gate on the outskirts of Bournemouth.

HOSPICE CARE Getting out into the garden, if you’re lucky enough to have some outdoor space, is proving to be beneficial for people’s wellbeing and offering some much needed respite from pandemic gloom for people across Dorset. Stewarts Garden Centre, has donated around 50 annual plants to LewisManning Hospice Care patients. There are two garden centres in Dorset, at Christchurch and Broomhill, and another at Titchfield, Hampshire. Ruth Burnhill, Director of Clinical Services at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, said: “We are delighted to accept this offer and the plants will be dropped off safely during home visits. Patients will be able to enjoy a sense of wellbeing which comes when they can see these spring blossoms beginning to flower. These beautiful plants will certainly brighten up our patient’s day, so thank you so much Stewarts Garden Centre for your incredibly generous donation, it will mean a lot to our high risk patients.” From its new premises, at Longfleet Road, Lewis-Manning Hospice Care exists to help the people of Poole, Purbeck and East Dorset with life limiting illnesses. Its aim is to increase physical and social wellbeing, reduce isolation and loneliness, support people to stay in their homes longer, and alleviate the huge pressures on family and carers.

LO C K D OW N S O N G SINGS PRAISES O F LEG EN DARY B O U N CY FLO O R Drama, dance and all forms of visual art course through its veins, but ever since it opened more than 40 years ago the beating heart of Lighthouse has kept time to the rhythm of bass, guitar and drum. In celebration of the part popular music has played in its rich history and in the lives of generations of its audiences, Lighthouse has commissioned Dorset-based artist Lorna Rees of Gobbledegook Theatre - who won last weekend’s CoronaVision 2020 song contest – to write a song about it. The song, ‘And the Floor Bounced’, performed by The Lockdown Band – Lorna, husband Adam and children Dylan and Rufus – launched on its social media channels on the 18 May and can be viewed online at lighthousepoole.co.uk. “It is such a privilege to be asked to write this song,” says Lorna, “Lighthouse has been a constant in my life – I was born a few months after it opened in 1978 we used to visit throughout my childhood. My parents took me there to see Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and it felt like a life changing moment. “

They need your help to stay in existence. The negative economic impact of the current Covid-19 pandemic on many businesses and individuals is clear and widespread. The impact on sport providers such as BSFC is similarly damaging. This has cast a cloud over the future of these teams moving forward and the financial stability needed to sustain them. The planned fundraising activities from March to date have been scuppered with uncertainty as to when, or if, they will be able to do so before the start of next season. The teams have been innovative with fundraising in a “lockdown“ environment and have been marginally successful but sadly have been unable to raise as much as is needed to cover costs. They are faced with meeting a number of ongoing bills and future commitments. Without any income for the foreseeable future it is, and will be, a great challenge. They are therefore reaching out and appeal to the local and wider community to assist them with generating revenue to help see them through these unprecedented times. At a time when all charities are suffering and when our attention is rightly occupied by supporting our frontline key workers, they hope that you might also consider supporting BSFC. They ask that anyone who is able to please donate to help them survive, any donation, little or large is appreciated, please visit www.gofundme.com/f/ bournemouth-sports-fc-help-save-our-club, the

Christchurch based film and video production company, BRANDED Studios, are delighted to be part of film history. They have announced the worldwide distribution rights (ex. US) to an exclusive documentary about the making of Rocky, narrated by Sylvester Stallone himself. Over 40 years’ ago Sylvester Stallone was an unknown actor with a dream. This incredible untold story, “Becoming Rocky”, charts the creation of the most classic underdog story of all time, passionately chronicled by the legend himself. This new biographical documentary is the epitome of a real life rags to riches story. The whole world knows the Rocky franchise but very few know how this iconic film changed the lives of so many involved. This biopic will not only appeal to die-hard Rocky fans but to those interested in how cinematographic history was made during the making of the first film. Rocky not only changed the lives of many for generations to come, but it revolutionised the art of film making. With a worldwide release date of 9th June, Rocky will once again be brought to life with rare, behind-the-scenes and never-before-seen footage. Charlotte Fantelli, Managing Director of Branded Studios in Christchurch, Dorset is responsible for the delivery of the worldwide launch, and is a self confessed Rocky fan. Charlotte says; “Just as Rocky inspired me and millions of others, the story of its creation is just as incredible. This documentary is a truly inspiring human spirit story and I am overwhelmingly proud to be presenting it to the worldwide market.” Visit www.becomingrocky.com to pre-order your digital download.

INVITE COMMUNITY

I S O L AT I O N

T O D I S P L AY Y E L L O W

Self-isolation is tough for us all; for a 15-year old girl who is used to a busy social life it brings its own challenges. “I was having a video call with my 3 younger cousins who were driving their mum crazy and I offered to ‘virtually’ look after them for a while. They quickly lost interest in talking to me, but I didn’t want to let my Auntie down, so I thought I’d give them a singing lesson. They loved it and it was so much easier to keep their attention and interact with them. “My Auntie told my Uncle in Spain about the virtual singing lesson and he asked if I would do the same for his kids…and that’s where it occurred to me that it might be possible to reach out to a few more people. I really enjoy passing on what I know about controlling my voice, I enjoy interacting with young children, I thought it might help some adults whose kids are driving them mad and at £2.50 per half hour, I could earn some pocket money which I plan to put to use to help pay for my singing lessons once the selfisolation restrictions are lifted. “I now have clients, that somehow makes me sound so grown up! I’m just trying to do my bit during these challenging times, and I thought my story might help others to put their creative talents to good use. We all need to help each other and stay connected…my plan is to help as many people as possible sing through self-isolation.”

RIBBONS AND R EM EM B ER LOVED O N ES Forest Holme Hospice in Poole is appealing to local residents to display yellow ribbons in memory of loved ones in their windows and gardens at home during the month of June as part of National Hospice Awareness Month. Each year the hospice hosts Tie a Yellow Ribbon, which is a special commemorative event, where members of the public are invited to make a dedication to a loved one. Each ribbon carries the name of the person being remembered, who may or may not have attended the hospice, and are then displayed in the Forest Holme garden. However, under the current Government guidelines, the hospice is unable to host the event on June 18th this year, so instead wants to expand the yellow ribbon display out into the local community and encourage people to create visual reminders of the love and fond memories they have of partners, family members and friends. The hospice has produced a ribbon template that this available to download on its website, along with a step by step guide, and they are asking the public to share their photographs via its social media pages. CORONAVIRUS AND CONVEYANCING

SELLING YOUR HOUSE AFTER LOCKDOWN The housing market is vital to the economy and I think we can all agree that the sooner it can safely be back on its feet, the better. I’ve had many conversations with colleagues, clients and contacts the past few weeks and I remain confident that the government will do everything it can to achieve this as soon as it is safe to do so. The industry has had to take new innovative steps to adjust during these lockdown restrictions, such as electronic signatures and virtual valuations. This continues to give me hope that the market is ready and waiting to bounce back. However, for those that have their house on the market, or were considering doing so before the lockdown restrictions came into place, this can be a frustrating time. In spite of that, there are several things you can do to prepare to sell now lockdown restrictions are easing. Prepare your house for viewings Sellers can use their time wisely during lockdown in making sure they make their house as attractive as possible to prospective buyers once viewings start again. Get those last few items of DIY and titivation completed. You’ll be surprised what a lick of paint, some green foliage or a declutter can do to a property! Look into virtual valuations Many estate agents are available during the coronavirus lockdown for virtual valuations via video conferencing. This will give you a better idea of what you can expect to put the property on the market for and be ahead of the game once restrictions are lifted.

If you would like any recommendations for estate agents currently offering this service, please let us know and we can put you in touch with the professional agents we work with that are available to help virtually at the current time. Sort out your conveyancing quotation and documents If you really want to be ahead of the game, contact us for a conveyancing quotation. We will walk you through the process and there are many things we can move forward with while in lockdown. We can let you have the forms to complete now, rather than when you have a buyer, meaning there will be less admin to worry about once the market starts moving again. You can also get to work on collating all of the documents we may need such as: guarantees, planning permissions, boiler documents and so on. We can help you put yourself in the best position to proceed quickly once the lockdown restrictions are lifted. Are you looking to sell your house and have any questions or concerns about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic? Unsure of the current processes and how these changes may affect you? Nicky and the rest of the team are on hand to offer reassurance and clarity for those currently hoping to sell or buy, as well as for those working within the property industry. Speak to our Property team today: call 02380 221344 or email contact@duttongregory.co.uk

Ways to feature florals at home If you’ve been missing your outdoor floral fix, there are plenty of ways to ‘grow’ your own dazzling display of blooms at home. You can take your pick from wallpapers, fabrics, crockery, and a host of other home accessories all with blooming beautiful floral designs, which are bursting forth this season. No green fingers required – just pick from our bouquet of 12 fantastic floral fixes to take home this season…

Go wild on walls “We’re noticing a greater demand for floral murals,” says Rachel Kenny, studio manager for specialists in murals and wallpaper, Wallsauce. “At this time when we’re restricted in travelling, it seems people are really missing visiting beautiful gardens, going to the famous flower shows, and are just longing to bring the beauty of nature and all its blooms into the home.” And, she points out, a wonderful floral display is an eye-catching and soothing backdrop for those video meetings. Wallsauce’s Delicate Floral Meadow wallpaper, from £29 per square metre, features individual blooms on a pure white background.

Make a floral statement Just one chair is all it took! Make an impact with a single furniture piece upholstered in a bold floral print. Leave the space around your statement piece uncluttered, so you really allow it to star. For added impact, pick up on one colour in the design for a selection of accessories, such as a cushion, vase or rug, elsewhere in the room. “Florals and botanical prints are such a popular choice for spring and summer and striking designs can really add a wow factor to a room,” says John Darling, founder of Darlings of Chelsea. “This chair suits any room, from a traditional conservatory to a contemporary living room, and is a classic which will never date.” Plant up a home office In a home office or workspace, you need a design that will boost energy and creativity, while also giving you a lovely view. “Working from home is becoming the new norm and a bold floral design for a window blind can perfectly disguise a poor view, as well as transforming an unremarkable corner into a personal space full of character,” enthuses Michael Ayerst, managing director at Surface View, who can recreate images on wall murals, canvasses, blinds and ceramic tiles.

“Florals have definitely made a big return to interiors,” he adds. “Our collection of historic botanical drawings, tropical palm paintings and colourful horticultural illustrations from across the centuries are proving particularly popular.” Take to the floor “If you’re looking to incorporate colourful statement flowers, one of the easiest and most affordable ways to do it is by featuring a bright, bold rug,” says Jemma Dayman, buyer at Carpetright. “The variety of hues in a floral rug will allow for an eclectic selection of furniture and accessories to be used throughout the room, bringing further pops of colour and creating a cohesive and stylish scheme.”

natural, organic vases,” advises Dunstan. “Bouquets such as hydrangeas and peonies, by Abigail Ahern, add a sense of boutique luxury, while bringing a gentle warmth and softness to a room.” Picture petals One of the easiest ways to bring this trend home is with artwork. A floral print or poster can look dynamic hung on its own, or you could create a ‘living’ gallery of prints. Pick a theme – botanical drawings, your favourite flower portrayed in different ways, or a collection of still life flower paintings – and link them by using the same colour and style of frame throughout.

Play with flower power Treat a sofa like a window-box – replacing tired old plants with new ones would give it an instant update, and new cushions in a pretty floral print could have the same effect. “Times of uncertainty make us want to reconnect with nature, give us an appreciation of what matters, and mean we look to our surroundings to comfort us,” says Georgia Metcalfe, founder and creative director, The French Bedroom Company. “Florals are great for bringing the outside in, whether it’s a floral fresco wallpaper design, patterned bed linen, or simple bunches of hand-picked wildflowers from a walk. Filling our rooms with floral spring tones has the effect of a visual revamp, which can’t help but lift our spirits.” Fake it to make it Faux blooms are such high quality now, they’re often indistinguishable from the real thing, and so it’s perhaps not surprising their popularity is soaring. They’ll never wilt or droop, provide instant cost-effective decoration and if you can’t manage to keep indoor plants alive, faux ones are a good option. “Faux flowers can be used to inspire a romantic and atmospheric setting. Match pastels with deep berry and lavender shades and showcase fresh greenery in

Spread a little sunshine Think outside of the vase. A perfectly placed petal – or more – on a print or quirky accessory will refresh the look of a room and really show flower power is growing on you. Serve a floral feast Interior designers know how effective ‘trompe l’oeil’ (realistic imagery which creates an optical 3D illusion) can be in rooms, and they use it to conjure stunning vistas or talking-point effects. These are ideal used in one section of a wall, paired with a neutral background which fills the rest of the space, allowing the image to ‘pop’ without overpowering the room. “Murals are great at adding drama and depth and can give the illusion of an impressive landscape, which is restful on the eye,” says Surface View’s Ayerst. Blooming table treats There’s such a profusion of floral-inspired tableware around currently, whether you favour delicate ditsy patterns, punchier designs or something in-between. “For those who enjoy experimenting with statement colour and bold motifs, Marimekko tableware is such a playful addition to a dining room,” says Emily Dunstan, home buyer, Heal’s.

Summer Festivals in the Garden With challenging times also come numerous opportunities to get creative and make memories you are sure to cherish forever. As festival season is fast approaching, and we are lucky enough to have sun-soaked afternoons, now is the time to plan your Summer festival in the garden. To set the festival feeling lighting is essential, and it is the perfect excuse to really go to town with fairy lights. Swag fairy lights and festoons between tree branches or festoon poles and hang white lanterns in trees. If you’d like to go the extra mile, wrap connectable fairy lights around the trunks of trees, this will truly transform your space. Festival food is a must, think finger food with an exotic twist, concoct some fun cocktails and mocktails to make the day feel like a special occasion. Dressing the table with micro lights and outdoor candles is the most effective way to complete any outdoor setting.

Netley Court celebrates ‘outstanding’ CQC rating Netley Court, a luxury care home in Netley Abbey, Southampton, has been awarded an overall rating of ‘outstanding’ following an inspection by England’s health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This highest rating level is only given to 3.5% of care homes in the country. In addition to the overall rating, ‘outstanding’ ratings were given for being ‘caring’ and ‘well led’. Embrace isolation on your next holiday Even before the pandemic, tourists had grown tired of overtourism; travellers no longer wanted to follow the crowds. Space and privacy will become even more important when we all start to travel safely again, with most people likely to favour remote, wilderness areas over busy city streets. So, if isolation has given you a taste for the quiet life, these are a few of the world’s remote retreats, hotels and self-catering cottages to consider.

Shipwreck Lodge, Namibia Being cast at sea has similarities with the pandemic: drifting endlessly, alone, it seems there’s no horizon in sight. But this luxurious beached vessel strikes a beautiful balance between serenity and solitude, in a landscape of dry riverbeds and dunes veiled in ocean mist. Sleeping 24 people in spread apart cabins, this architectural masterpiece is the only accommodation option in the 6,504sq-mile Skeleton Coast National Park, in a country with one of the world’s lowest population densities. From £650pp per night (naturalselection.travel). Corocora Camp, Los Llanos, Colombia Colombia’s Pacific coast is famous for its birds and marine mammals, but one of the country’s highest concentrations of wildlife can be found inland in the wetland savannas of Los Llanos, a big sky region

Five secluded, one-bedroom, self-catering treehouses with log-burning stoves occupy their own woodland plots, with two linked by a bridge for families. And once a welcome hamper of local products has been delivered, only birds and squirrels are likely to drop by. Bacchus House, Antipaxos, Greece With only 30 residents and three tavernas, crowds are never an issue on this unspoilt Ionian island. In the absence of any shops, food and amenities are delivered by boat; few cars mean soundscapes are dominated by lapping waves. Spend days exploring nature trails or walking barefoot along empty white beaches. Suitable for couples, this self-catering hilltop retreat is even further away from it all. Seven nights in September cost from £1,274pp (two sharing) plus flights and transfers through GIC The Villa Collection (gicthevillacollection.com). Owner’s Cabin, Staurneset, Norway We may all be suffering cabin fever, but ‘hytte culture’ (or cabin lifestyle) could be the ideal antidote. Outside space is the premium sell for this isolated cottage: perched on a peninsula overlooking the North Sea, it’s surrounded by a sprawl of nature. Three double bedrooms make it suitable for families, with multiple options for hikes and direct access to a white sandy beach and rocky tide pools, providing enough activities to keep children educated and entertained. From 6,000NOK/£460 per night through 62Nord (62.no/en).

Khwai Leadwood Camp, Botswana Safari holidays revolve around wilderness; the only large gatherings are herds of antelopes, elephants or zebra. Part of the Okavango Delta on the edge of Moremi Game Reserve, home to a high predator density of leopards, lions and wild dogs, the community-run Khwai concession shares the same excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. African Bush Camps are offering 65% off regular rates at their new six-tent camp, opening August 1, 2020, for bookings made by the end of May. From US$360/£291pp per night (africanbushcamps.com). Mallín Colorado Ecolodge, Aysén Province, Chile Distances are vast in Patagonia, on the edge of the world, where the closest neighbour can be many miles away. A five-hour scenic drive from the nearest airport, this family-run lodge is not an overnight visit, but the rewards are worth your journey time. Set amidst meadows, native forest, and the vast Lake General Carrera, the location offers guests a chance to trek glaciers, hike woodland trails or sit back and revel in people-free views. Most insurance companies are offering enhanced help and support to all their customers who may be affected by the impact of Coronavirus (Covid-19), but here are a few things to consider and check with your insurer.

Local retirement specialist Gemma gives advice on the most affordable options

Working from home: If you are working from home because of government advice, your home insurance should not be affected, but you may want to check the levels of cover if you have taken any office equipment home with you.

At Platinum Skies, we know that retirement is an important next chapter in your life. It’s why we work hard to make our beautiful new homes truly affordable through our Government backed, shared ownership scheme.

If your home becomes uninhabitable: If your home suffers damage from a fire, flood etc, your policy will continue to provide cover including funding of alternative accommodation. It is vitally important you contact your insurer to report the incident as soon as possible.

This also allows our owners to securely access equity from their previous property, while retaining a long-term property investment with us. Each of our Platinum Skies locations (Christchurch, Poole, Salisbury and Sherborne) are well placed near to amenities and beautiful scenery to offer you a happy, healthy and wealthy retirement.

A friend or relative is staying during the lockdown period: If your guest has their own home insurance policy, this may cover their possessions while they are temporarily staying with you. There may be limits on the cover so they should check their policy. Remember that some claims for theft will only be accepted if there is evidence of a breakin, so make sure you fully trust the person who is staying with you.

When you first walk through the door, you’ll feel a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. We’ve created a wide-range of lifestyle services that bring the best in activity, entertainment and well-being. This can be seen in the diverse activities on offer in our communal lounges and the ever-changing menu of delicious, healthy cuisine to enjoy in our bistros.

Ways to get the beachside chic look Get inspired for summer 2020 by combining tropical and coastal decorating schemes. Using a pastel colour palette and natural elements, Style

Rebecca

Interior

FurnitureChoice.co.uk

shares 3 simple ways to create this idyllic setting at home. Pair white with pastels A whitewashed colour scheme instantly creates a light and airy space, channelling the calming qualities of an idyllic seaside getaway. Match the white backdrop with pastel accents for a soft contrast that still retains a relaxed atmosphere. “Choose colours with a light and soft undertone to create a beach-inspired look at home,” Rebecca advises. “For example, pair sage walls and palm print wallpaper with a white dining set as a fresh nod to tropical style. This colour scheme is light, fresh and sets a lively mood for entertaining. Meanwhile, choose blush pink in the bedroom as it exudes that carefree, playful touch that is synonymous with seaside chic. Use a white wooden bed as the anchor while layering the room with throws and cushions in pops of pink for added warmth and texture.”

Decorate with natural accents Creating

at

home would not be complete without incorporating natural elements. “Bringing the outdoors inside is a calming way to reconnect with nature,” Rebecca says. “With a grey sofa as the centrepiece, light oak or driftwood pieces as accents evoke the feeling of being by the beach with their raw, understated texture. Complete the look with rattan, jute and pampas grass accessories which add to the dreamy aesthetic thanks to their neutral, earthy qualities.” Being by the beach is a sensorial experience, so it is important to take that aspect into account when decorating. Mixing materials such as wood with amber glass offers a welcoming contrast of different textures. “Amber glass accessories lend a warm, ethereal glow that strikes a fine balance between

rustic

and

contemporary,

especially when it’s matched with light wood tones,” Rebecca explains. “Round off the look with indoor plants to purify the air and for that extra tropical touch.”

Emphasise wall panel details Whether it’s tropical or coastal-inspired style, tap into the room’s details to establish a clean, curated space at home. For example, emphasise the texture of tongue and groove wall panelling as part of the bedroom backdrop. “Tongue and groove wall panelling makes a strong visual statement and prevents the decor from looking too flat when you combine it with white floorboards,” Rebecca says. “Clean lines and a light, airy palette are staples of modern coastal style and creates a space that’s both stylish and functional. Contrast the panelling with a round mirror - its curves help to soften the edges while still keeping the ambience chic and relaxed. WHERE MANY SEE DOOM AND GLOOM, WE SEE OPPORTUNITY There is no doubt that this deadly virus and the extended absence from the workplace has allowed us to focus and consider much needed changes to an industry fraught with niggling issues that right now we feel can be implemented quite easily. In an uncertain market place this will allow sales transactions to actually progress more easily to completion without the wasted time, money and misery that a fall through brings. Speed of Conveyancing – An Absolute Must In the nineties properties were rising fast in price so speed of conveyancing was essential for us to get a sale through without having to renegotiate increased prices that in many cases effected mortgage offers and ruined sales transactions. The norm back then was 5-7 weeks for a transaction, anything longer and the percentages of a fall through increased significantly. Roll on twenty years and the average sale in many cases takes months not weeks and in today’s market place this we feel will be wholly unacceptable. We have implemented, along with the assistance of three like-minded solicitors/ conveyancers a fast track policy, when I say fast track this was always achievable anyway before industry standards slipped to this regard. We are making it essential and part of the process that the solicitors/ conveyancers have to agree a suitable, achievable time scale so that there is a level of expectancy from all parties prior to agreeing a sale.

Moving From London and Other Major Cities The general consensus is that working from home has been successful during lockdown and even we have doubted the need for any high street presence going forward. We used to operate multiple offices throughout the region however the internet changed the need for that, just as Covid is changing people’s way of life right now. There is a growing fear of city living from individuals that working from home have proved there is no need for daily office interaction. A train ride to the head office once a week will allow the ability to live in Dorset and Hampshire years earlier than many dreamed of. We are focusing more attention to this expanding income stream as historically, for our company anyway, it has always been disproportionate the volume of sales we have achieved to London and Home Counties buyers, even before this pandemic began. Sale of Land As well as maintaining our marketplace in residential sales we are now increasing our budget and resources to land sales. We have historically sold hundreds of acres of land of all types…. Development, Farms, Large homes with acreage, Forests, Lakes and much more. If you were to have invested a million pounds in land 25 years ago, in most instances it would be worth more now than if you were to have invested a million pounds into a residential property. We feel with the volatile stock markets as they are that this is currently a safe investment and we aim to capitalise on this.

Ways to see the world from the comfort of your own home While planes are parked on runways and ships tethered indefinitely to docks, the only way to travel right now is from your living room. In the absence of any tourists, many attractions, safari lodges and tourist boards have created a selection of live streams, virtual tours and 360-degree images, allowing

Live like a local in the Faroe Islands A remote, windswept archipelago, where waterfalls tumble from velvety green cliffs, the Faroe Islands is Game of Thrones territory. Blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, the national tourist board has launched an ingenious virtual tour, where at-home travellers have the freedom to direct an islander in real time. Use the keyboard to make your human avatar turn, walk, run – and even jump – as they explore epic landscapes by foot, boat, helicopter and horseback. Guides will share information about the 18 islands and answer any questions. HOW DOES IT WORK: Until April 25, hour-long tours will take place daily at 2pm and 5pm. After then, they will be weekly. Visit remote-tourism.com for updates. Join a queue to control the guide or sit back and enjoy the tour.

Dance all night to Berlin’s best DJs “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music,” wrote 19th century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Perhaps that’s what the neighbours might think if they spot you leaping around the living room to one of Berlin’s United We Stream DJ sets. Refusing to press pause on their mixers, the German city’s famous clubs are holding virtual parties, and everyone is on the guest list. The first live broadcast from Watergate united 70,000 lone clubbers, all moving to the same beats. HOW DOES IT WORK: Visit en.unitedwestream.berlin for a list of upcoming events. Take a sky safari above Namibia’s deserts The epitome of wide, open space, Namibia provides welcome relief when the walls are caving in. Epic dunes stretch for thousands of miles in a landscape that’s evershifting, and at night, constellations light up the sky like fireworks. It would take weeks to cross the country by road; from your armchair, it’s possible in less than an hour. Using interactive 360-degree images, rise above the mind-boggling 300-metre sand ridges in Sossusvlei and survey every Deadvlei, a salty clay pan filled with the brittle, blackened skeletons of acacia trees. HOW DOES IT WORK: Visit airpano.com/360photo/ Namibia and select a tour.

Learn to dance at an Argentinian milonga The music of Carlos Gardel spills from crumbling doorways in Buenos Aires’ historic San Telmo district, providing a soundtrack for suave dancers locked in a dramatic embrace. Seductive and sensational, tango is an apt expression of its birthplace, so if you really want to scratch beneath the city’s surface, it’s worth learning some of the footwork. Join a live streaming e-lesson with tango school Tanguito and learn some moves to put into practise once social distancing comes to an end. HOW DOES IT WORK: Lessons take place every Wednesday (7pm and 8pm) and Sunday (2pm and 3pm); additional solo workshops on Tuesdays (12.30pm) and Fridays (7pm and 8pm). Visit tanguito.co.uk/live. INTERIORS | THE NEW NORDIC

Balancing modernity with tradition: The new Nordic Scandinavian style is often described as a search for purity, using clean lines and organic materials to create a sense of stillness and calm. And while bleached woods and muted palettes have long been a part its DNA, contemporary Scandi design is changing. It’s being driven by the emergence of a younger generation of designers, each of whom is determined to infuse the movement with a sense of serendipity and fun. Somewhat experimental and slightly less strict, it represents a bold new offering for lovers of Nordic design.

Mixing It Up Whereas traditional Scandi brands have tended to dedicate themselves to the use of leather and wood, newcomers like Muuto and Menu have championed a more inclusive approach, inviting marbles, velvets and metals into the mix.

sit side by side. Wooden dining chairs are joined by travertine tables and velvet loungers, working together to challenge one-dimensional ideas of Scandi style. Sculptural lines and attention to detail still reign supreme, only this time with a little more personality and shine. A New Dress Code It’s a trend that can also be observed in this year’s reissue of classic styles. Both Verpan’s 430 Series and Fritz Hansen’s Ro have come out of their shells with vibrant new finishes and upholsteries. The novelties speak to a wider desire to create Scandi styles capable of standing out from the crowd, updating traditional templates with rich new colours and textures. Indeed, after spending so much time chasing light, airy interiors, several young Scandi stylists are going the other way entirely, experimenting with moody hues that exude atmosphere and charm.

INTERIORS | THE NEW NORDIC

Each of the examples we have seen has felt curiously intimate, proof that dark hues don’t have to dictate a lack of warmth. Just be sure to include plenty of indoor greenery and metal finishes to help keep it feeling fresh. Fit For Purpose At its core, Scandi style is about creating essential, beautiful designs that help you live better with less. The new school of Scandi stylists are keenly aware of this and have brought forth a selection of multi-purpose styles that will promise to transform the way we experience our homes. One of our favourites includes the On The Move Side Table by up-andcoming Danish design house, Cane-Line. Lightweight and portable, its top slides off to become an elegant serving tray, ideal for alfresco dining or meals in front of the TV. How to get the nomadic luxe look These are challenging times for style hunters, especially if you’re in need of a far-flung fix and long to be somewhere else. In the new normal, souvenirs from souks, textiles and prints that draw on a mix of cultural influences, and decorative trimmings that reflect our eclectic tastes, feel as out of reach as a Moroccan riad – and wafting down a mosaic-tiled courtyard in a beaded kaftan. But while we’re social distancing, would-be globetrotters and those loving lockdown are perfectly placed to spice things up at home with warm tones of terracotta, a gleam of gold, and rich fabrics to capture a timeless, laid-back look inspired by the past, as we look forward to the future. Here’s how to introduce some sun-drenched stylish updates… “As spring creeps into summer, add touches of warmth to your scheme with terracotta reds, soft pinks and hints of gold,” says Emily Dunstan, home buyer at Heal’s. “Drawing inspiration from the outdoors will create a comforting environment that’s gentle on the eye, perfect for a relaxing lounge area or bedroom; while blending rich, earthy tones with refined elements of brass and gold will evoke an exotic feel, bringing a sense of holiday heat into your home.”

Warm golds radiate warmth A cool palette of grey and deepest charcoal, backed by a wall painted in gold or mustard, offers an earthy contrast and works brilliantly in an entrance hall or fireplace surround. Team with monochrome travel prints for a glowing getaway feeling. “Terracotta and rust are colours found in nature and offer a connection to the outside world, creating a sense of calm,” says Helen Shaw, director of Benjamin Moore UK. “Incorporating rich, bold spice colours creates instant character, taking a small space from sterile to stylish.” And if you really want to luxe it up, what could be more wondrous on the wall than metallic feather wallpaper? “We may not be able to go on fabulous holidays right now, but that doesn’t stop us taking inspiration from the stunning aesthetics of Moroccan interiors,” says Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper. “The use of spicy, warm tones and pops of gold can bring a much needed heat, and create a sense of the exotic in any room. Try a splash of cobalt blue to really bring a room to life – as inspired by the incredible Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech.” Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

Ways to improve your outdoor living space With summer well within our sights, there couldn’t be a better time to home in on design ideas and projects outside, preferably under blue skies. Of course, when it comes to DIY, some might say confidence is key. But with the right tools and a little guidance, it is possible to reimagine your outdoor space and style it up for when the time comes for those much longed for summer socials. And having made the most of your time at home being super-duper organised, you’ll be able to showcase your achievements, when we finally throw open our doors. In the meantime, here’s how to get those projects off the ground… Celebrate ‘happy hour’ in your own garden Building an outdoor bar can be the next best thing to visiting your local. Splash out on a pre-assembled drinking hole – Argos sells one that comes with a couple of stools, or opt for a tiki style, stocked at places like Wayfair and John Lewis. Or if you’re ultra handy, knock your own up from wood or pallets, or upcycle an old bookcase.

You could even build a BBQ area to make the most of staying at home this summer.

Heather Foo, regional sales manager at Bradstone says their Easy Stack Walling (POA) is a great way to change the style of your garden. Whether to demarcate a seating area or perhaps separate two different garden terrains, she says even a low-lying wall can add a bit of depth and texture to your outdoor space. And as she points out, it’s ideal for novice DIYers, as the hollow bricks can simply be stacked and bonded together with a suitable sealant, and then filled with concrete to create a stable base for a feature wall.

Light up your space With everything coming into bloom, it’s only natural you’ll want to put the spotlight on your best borders and flower beds. And, on sultry summer evenings, ambient lighting makes for a relaxed, luxe atmosphere. Try LED torch lights with a flickering candle effect, which are quick and easy to install, outdoor pendants, string lights and bordering your garden with lanterns and spikes. Alternatively, Paul Davey, category director for Timber, Hardware and Electrical at Wickes, says wall sconces and up/down lights are a compact way of illuminating large areas. Or, for a more traditional evening option: “A fire pit can be used as a great statement and centrepiece, providing not only light, but the opportunity to freely roast marshmallows with the family.”

M OTO R I N G N E WS Nick Fletcher tells us the latest news on all things motoring.

ISUZU D-MAX AWA R D The multi award-winning Isuzu D-Max has picked up yet anothe r top trophy. This time it has been recognised as the Best Workhorse Pick-Up 2020 by specialist magazine Trade Van Driver - the 8th year in a row that the D-Max has won this award! The Trade Van Driver Awards celebrate the most reliable, capable and effective working vehicles available on the market. Vehicles are compared across several core criteria, including payload, safety, technology, running costs, fuel efficiency, reliability and aftersales service. The Isuzu D-Max has a 3.5 tonne towing capacity, over 1 tonne payload and was praised for its quiet, economical driving experience, availability in single, extended and doublecab formats as well as a wide choice of trim levels. Its five-year/ 125,000-mile warranty package was also highlighted.

M A Z D A C X- 5 U P D AT E D The Mazda CX-5 range has been updated for 2020 and now features efficiency-improving cylinder deactivation on manual petrol models. Prices start at £27,030. Since the launch of the original Mazda CX-5 in 2012, 60,000 have found homes in the UK, while sales of the second-generation model have now passed the 25,000 cars mark. The introduction of cylinder deactivation on manual 164 hp Skyactiv-G petrol models delivers a reduction of 8g/km of C02. And inside, the 2020 model is marked out by changes to the central command screen, which now sees the mapping extend to the full extent of the physical monitor to give a larger and clearer colour touchscreen.

JUNE 20

118

The 14-model range features six petrol models and eight diesel models. Matched exclusively to front-wheel drive with a choice of automatic and manual transmission across all petrol models, the Skyactiv-G petrol is available in all three trim grades: SE-L, Sport and GT Sport. As with petrol CX-5s there’s a choice of automatic and manual gearbox across all diesel models. In the UK market 73 per cent of CX-5 sales are taken by Sport models or higher and the 2020 Mazda CX-5 Sport features 19-inch silver alloy wheels, a reversing camera and a power-lift tailgate, whileinside it features an eight-way power adjustable drivers’ seat, black leather, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and a windscreen projecting colour head-up display, plus a Bose 10-speaker audio system.

R O A D T E S T: CITROEN C1 The Citroen C1 has been around for some years in the crowded city car class but the current model is still a significant contender, scoring well for its keen pricing, smart looks and easy driving dynamics, writes NICK FLETCHER. C1 is priced from £10,810 and comes in three and five-door form, all models using the same engine, a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol unit offering 71 hp, and mated to a standard 5-speed gearbox. It’s a frugal engine delivering average fuel economy of 58.8 mpg, though the downside of that is a slow 0-60 mph time of 14.0 seconds. Top speed is 99 mph and emissions are 108 g’km. Out and about, the C1 has a light-touch easy-drive feel which makes it agile for parking. On the open road, ride quality is comfortable and cornering is poised. At speed there is a little more engine and

wind noise than some rivals but it is not too intrusive. Overall it has a smooth pleasant driving ambiance and is especially nimble in urban traffic. Revised styling gives the C1 a chic appearance and it has perhaps a touch more youthful personality than rivals such as the Hyundai10 and Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 108. Inside, the cabin can accommodate four adults with adequate head, shoulder and leg room. Boot space is 196 litres, small by class standards, but it can be expanded by dropping the rear seats to create 780 litres though the load floor is not flat. On the plus side, there are large

119

door pockets, a useful bin in the centre console and a roomy glovebox. On the entry level Touch model, standard kit is limited but does include remote locking and powered front windows, LED running lights, a USB point, auto emergency braking, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring. To get features such as automatic air-conditioning and connectivity you have to move up the range. For those on a limited budget or for people who perhaps want a small car as a secondcar runabout, the C1 makes a lot of sense. It looks stylish, is neat and nimble, offers low running costs and has excellent fuel economy.

R O A D T E S T: V O L K S W A G E N G O L F L I F E Volkswagen’s eighth-generation Golf continues to maintain the company’s longestablished record of producing a fine family hatchback noted for its easy driving and outstanding build-quality, writes NICK FLETCHER.

On the road, the car handles beautifully with precise steering and assured handling. The standard suspension is well-balanced for normal everyday driving though adaptive suspension is an option for those who are more performance- minded.

Priced from £23,875, the new Golf range offers petrol and diesel engines and some hybrid variants. Exterior styling is more sleek and elegant and enhances the Golf’s already cool image.

Standard equipment on all models includes digital radio, Bluetooth, smartphone connectivity, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and alloy wheels while the mid-range Style trim adds more kit including larger wheels, LED headlights and three-zone climate control. The topspec version is the sporty R-Line.

It competes against rivals such as the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, both very accomplished, yet overall the Golf is more refined and offers a smoother more comfortable ride.

The cabin of this new model is almost identical in size to that of its predecessor, so too the boot space of 380 litres. There is good head and leg room for all occupants, comfortable supportive seating and quality trim materials which help give the car a more upmarket persona. The main difference in the cabin is a new dashboard design which utilises two digital screens which eliminate many of the usual control buttons and include a voice-control system which can take a little time to become familiar. Overall, the new Golf is very impressive, notable for its classy styling and pleasing driving dynamics. It is not the cheapest contender in the medium-size hatchback sector but its strong suite of plus-points are significant and include its superb buildquality, stronger residual values and more badge kudos than many of its rivals.

The popular engine choice is the 130 hp 1.5 litre petrol, with 6-speed manual gerarbox. It delivers a top speed of 133 mph, a 0-60 mph time of 9.2 seconds and average fuel economy of 51.5 mpg. Emissions are 122 g/km.

JUNE 20

Safety features across the range include lane-keep assist, auto emergency braking and predictive pedestrian detection.

R O A D T E S T: M G 3 There is plenty of choice in the small hatchback sector but few models are priced under £10,000 which is a significant barrier for those on a limited budget, writes NICK FLETCHER. However, there is a stand-out contender that comes in under that price barrier and it has a famous badge too – MG. The legendary British brand is now in Chinese ownership though its cars are designed in Europe and the starter model is the MG3, a roomy five-door hatchback which has a more sporty design than its rivals and is visually more striking in an often humdrum styling category. The MG3 starts at £9,995 for the Explore version and there are two other trim grades – Excite and Exclusive which add extra features. All models are powered by the only engine in the range, a 1.5 litre petrol unit delivering 106 hp and mated to a standard 5-speed manual gearbox. The 0-60 mph time is 10.6 seconds, top speed 108 mph, emissions 152 g/km and average fuel economy 42.3 mpg. Explore models come with six airbags, stability control and emergency brake assist, hill-hold control, tyre pressure-monitoring system, auto headlights, electric front and rear windows, radio/CD player and a USB socket. levels add touchscreen controls and features such as sat-nav and smartphone connectivity. The cabin offers class-leading occupant space and while the boot space is fairly typical of the class at 285 litres, it can be boosted to 1,262 litres by dropping the split-fold rear seats. The MG3 has been revised since first launched and the front-end now has sharper and more dynamic styling and a large grille with the company’s famous octagon MG badge very prominent. In a sector which includes rivals such as the Ford Fiesta and Skoda Fabia, the MG3 arguably has a more charismatic persona and as some of its rivals can cost substantially more, the MG3 is attractive to those who want as much car as they can get for a low price. On the road, the MG3 delivers decent performance. While it is not quite as smooth and responsive as some hatchbacks, its longer wheelbase means it does have excellent handling and a more supple and comfortable ride and overall it is a pleasing car to drive. Anyone seeking a good budget-price family hatchback should have the MG3 on their shortlist, especially as it beats all its rivals with one particular ace card – it comes with an industryleading seven-year warranty.

NEW AUDI A3 SALO O N The all-new Audi A3 Saloon is available to order in Sport, S line, Edition 1 and Vorsprung specifications and priced from £26,870. The compact four-door model has undergone a redesign alongside its fivedoor Sportback counterpart drawing on the very latest Audi developments in digitalisation, connectivity, driver assistance technology and powertrain optimisation. Highlights include the adoption of fully digital cockpit architecture with the touchscreen MMI Touch concept at its heart, the integration of mild hybrid MHEV drivetrains for selected models and the introduction of advanced new lighting configurations that give each variant a specific light ‘signature’. Compared with its predecessor, the new A3 Saloon is now four centimetres longer at 4.50 metres in length, while its wheelbase remains unchanged. Its width has increased by two centimetres to 1.82 metres and it is now one centimetre taller. There is a choice of three engines at launch - two 1.5-litre TFSI units and one 2.0-litre TDI – all of which major on efficiency.

R O A D T E S T: T O Y O TA COROLLA HYBRID The Toyota Corolla is one of the world’s biggest-selling cars and in hybrid form it appeals to a fast-growing market sector of buyers seeking comfort, practicality and economy while also reducing their carbon footprint, writes NICK FLETCHER. The Corolla Hybrid ticks that green box. While not a plug-in hybrid, it mates a petrol engine with an electric motor which together produce optimum performance and outstanding fuel economy. There are hatchback, estate and saloon variants and choice of 1.8 and 2.0 litre engine options and CVT auto transmission. The 1.8 version is the popular choice, offering a 0-60 mph time of 10.9 seconds, top speed 112 mph, fuel economy 62.8 mph and emissions of just 101 g/km. As a daily drive, Corolla hybrid - priced from £24,104 - is a good choice. While not the quickest in the class, it does have exceptionally refined performance, is wellmannered, easy to handle and delivers excellent ride comfort. The steering is accurate and the well-tuned suspension is nicely balanced for cornering poise. In slow town traffic, the electric power

sensors, you need to move up to Icon Tech grade or other upper-range versions.

The cabin has a quality look and accommodates five with adequate head and legroom and the large 363 litre boot is fine for normal family needs and can be boosted by folding the rear seats.

Safety features include auto emergency braking, lane-departure warning, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam assistance.

Standard equipment on the entry level Icon version includes dusk-sensing LED headlights, powered door mirrors, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control, digital radio, Bluetooth, smartphone mirroring and Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto. To get extra kit such as sat-nav and parking

122

Summing up, the Corolla hybrid is an impressive family car with a pleasing driving feel and low running costs. It is not quite as roomy as some rivals, nor the fastest in the class, but it does tick all the essential boxes and also comes with Toyota’s outstanding reliability record and its longer-than-most five-year warranty.

R O A D T E S T: S U Z U K I V I TA R A Suzuki’s Vitara is a compact SUV which is practical, reliable and relatively affordable and while there is stiff competition in the sector, the Vitara has plenty of plus-points including its mild-hybrid technology and the option of four-wheel-drive, writes NICK FLETCHER. Vitara prices start at £20,849 for the SZ4 trim which includes digital radio and CD player, USB port and Bluetooth connectivity. You also get alloy wheels, cruise control, climate control and automatic wipers.

which helps deliver enhanced performance and improved fuel economy. The 0-60 mph time is a nippy 9.5 seconds, top speed 124 mph. Average fuel economy is 49.7 and emissions are 128 g/km. Underway, the Vitara is smooth and responsive, with light steering making it easy to use in city traffic and tight parking situations. At motorway speeds the engine note is rather more discernable and there is more wind noise than some in the class but overall, the Vitara is a pleasant drive.

However, many buyers are likely to opt for the SZ-T and SZ5 trim levels which add a more sophisticated touch-screen infotainment system with integrated sat-nav, smartphone mirroring and a rear view camera.

The cabin is smartly designed with a user-friendly dashboard layout so you quickly feel at ease. Seating is comfortable and supportive, there is good all-round visibility and the raised gearstick is more convenient for quicker gear shifts. The car seats five adults and while the rear seat width is a little tight for three occupants there is good headroom. The boot space of 375 litres is adequate for normal everyday needs and can be boosted for larger items by dropping the rear seats. There is useful under-floor storage space too, and no awkward load lip, though the split-fold rear seats do not lie completely flat. Rivals include the Volkswagen T-Cross and SEAT Arona, but Suzuki has its own loyal following and this latest Vitara will have strong appeal to existing customers and with its revised styling and keen pricing is likely to attract new customers to the brand.

Only petrol engines are available and the 127 hp 1.4 litre version is the popular choice. It features mild hybrid technology

Tropical cocktails to put you in a summery mood We can't escape to a real desert island or tiki bar right now but these will taste like you're there, says Sam Wylie-Harris. If the recent heatwave put you in a summery mood, so will these tropical and tiki-inspired drinks. From Caribbean classics to reinventions with a modern twist, award-winning bartender Georgi Radev, author of cocktail recipe book Let's Get Tropical, has taken the best elements of traditional tropical concoctions and tiki culture to create some innovative new mixes. Here are three of his desert island drinks - each with a fruity twist - to get the juices flowing....

1. Margarita "Tequila gained popularity during the Prohibition era, when many Americans travelled to Mexico to satisfy their thirst for spirits. The first recipe for a Margarita appeared in the 1940s and used a simple combination of tequila, orange liqueur, and lime. The trend for adding salt on the rim of the glass came later, as did the vogue for frozen and fruity margaritas." M A R GA R I TA R E I N V E N T E D - O R C H I D E A "The sweet agave syrup balances the citrus flavours." Ingredients 35ml white tequila, 10ml Cointreau, 15ml mezcal, 15ml clementine juice, 15ml pineapple juice, 15ml lime juice, 10ml orgeat (almond) syrup, 10ml natural agave nectar. Method Add all the ingredients to a brandy balloon or wide rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Swizzle, and top with more crushed ice. Garnish with an orchid and a mint sprig.

2. Daiquiri "This drink was invented in the early 1900s, when an American mine engineer, Jennings Cox, was serving drinks to his workers in the Daiquiri region of Cuba. Rumour has it, Jennings ran out of gin, so he started shaking cocktails with white rum instead - introducing the now iconic trio of rum, lime, and sugar. Everyone loved the combination of flavours, and the daiquiri was born." THE CLASSIC RECIPE "The beauty of this classic drink is the simplicity of its ingredients." Ingredients 50ml white rum, 15ml sugar syrup, 20ml lime juice. Method Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the ingredients, shake hard and fine strain into a chilled coupe glass. Balance an elegant lime wedge on the side of the glass.

DA I Q U I R I R E I N V E N T E D S O U T H S E A S DA I Q U I R I "The traditional tropical liqueur, falernum adds a twist." Ingredients 50ml white rum, 20ml lime juice, 10ml passion fruit syrup, 10ml falernum liqueur (available from Master of Malt), Angostura bitters, 1 fresh pineapple ring. Method Muddle the pineapple in the bottom of a shaker. Add the rum, falernum, passion fruit syrup, and lime juice. Shake hard with ice and fine strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a lime twist and a dash of Angostura bitters.

This drink predates tiki-style cocktails - but it's often mistaken for one because of its complexity." THE CLASSIC RECIPE "A delightfully boozy cocktail that slips down easily drink with caution!" Ingredients 50ml gin, 15ml Cointreau, 15ml Cherry Heering, 10ml Benedictine, a dash of Angostura bitters, a dash of orange bitters, 15ml grenadine, 20ml lemon juice, 1 fresh pineapple ring, soda water. James Martin: ‘I don’t think we appreciate what’s on our doorstep’ Right now, none of us is able to explore the far reaches of the UK – however much we might want to.

By a happy accident of timing though, we’ll get to watch chef James Martin do just that. Jealousy is guaranteed – but if we can’t escape to the huge, sandy shores of Northumberland, or the rugged Northern Irish coast ourselves, at least we can sit in front of the telly and soak up the digitised, Technicolor imagery of them, and imagine ourselves sat on a rocky outcrop, cooking up a plateful of mussels with Martin. The restaurateur and Saturday morning telly chef’s latest series and accompanying cookbook,

Brilliant.” While Martin – a proper “farmer’s lad” who gets “a bit freaked out if I’m in a city for more than a couple of days” – is animated when talking about the landscapes, wildlife and producers he discovered, there’s a weariness that steals over him when talking about food culture and shopping habits in the UK (and this was before people began stockpiling). “To fully understand food, you’ve got to appreciate how difficult it is to produce, and where it’s from, and then you’ll respect it a lot more, and respect the people who produce it,” he explains fervently. He also considers artisan farmer’s markets “gimmicky” and “a tourist attraction” when we ought to be buying from everyday markets like they do

From a small “group of mates discussing the ‘what just happened’ moment when we were closed” and following a desire to help the wider community to make the most of Government’s Grant availability, accessing and dealing with the Job Retention Scheme and pooling thoughts and fears on “the Phased Return”, The Wonky Table was born. The group has now spread across the whole conurbation including Christchurch, Poole, Bournemouth and Wimborne. Now with over 80 Hospitality Owner/Operator participants representing over 140+ venues from all over the conurbations the group is growing every day.

www.justdorsetdentures.co.uk www.justdorsetdentures.co.uk

Staying connected is more important than ever. I only set the group up to share some thoughts back in March but TWT is getting bigger and bigger, we now want to make public our existence with all those in the Hospitality Industry in the hope that we can unite to share knowledge, resources and advice. The next step is getting ready (and making sure everyone is ready) for Post-C19. Ultimately, if there has ever been a time for us to come together, it is now. The Wonky Table welcomes all Hospitality owners and operators in the area and is a collective promise to give the industry the voice it needs to return with the strongest possible footing. For more information and to join the group, search for “The Wonky Table” on Facebook.

Anti-desk yoga poses to do if you’re sitting all day

So many of us have recently become home workers. There are some benefits - ditching your commute and entering a new period of your life where it’s OK to wear sweatpants to the office. But for all the positives – like setting your alarm later in the morning – there are some downsides too. Most notably, the backache that can come from sitting at a makeshift desk set-up for eight hours a day. Hunching over a laptop, using the sofa as desk chair, precariously balancing your screen on a pile of coffee table books… all of these actions can put pressure on your neck and spine, and there’s increasing evidence to suggest that sitting for long periods of time is bad for our overall health too. So what can be done? Well, we can start by trying to undo the damage with some antidesk yoga; moves that can release shoulder tension and improve posture. Here, yoga instructor Meghan Shannen (@megshan. yoga) shares four key poses to try on your next lunch break.

Low lunge “Lunges are great for stretching and strengthening your hip muscles, which can help to alleviate lower back pain. “To do this move, you’ll need to place your front leg at a 90-degree angle with your back knee on the mat and back toes untucked. I recommend using a yoga mat to protect your knees. “Engage your glutes and actively push your the shin of your back leg against the mat. Your abs and rib muscles should also be activated to protect your back. “Once you’ve found a solid foundation, lift your hands above your head, tucking your chin slightly to work the deep neck muscles. Take five deep breaths before switching legs.”

Forward fold with clasped hands “This move helps to open your chest and shoulders, which counteracts the standard sitting posture we tend to hold at our desks. “Start with your feet hips-width apart and clasp your hands behind you. Pull your hands away from your lower back and focus on keeping your shoulders away from your ears. “With bent knees, fold down, bringing your clasped hands overhead. Take five breaths, and then roll up slowly – imagining you’re stacking your spine, piece by piece.”

Reverse tabletop “This pose opens your shoulders and strengthens your glutes, wrists and back muscles. Start in a seated position, placing your hands behind your back, with your fingers facing towards you. Your feet should be hip-width apart. “Lift to a tabletop position, making sure your shoulders are stacked directly above your wrists. You should feel like you’re pushing out of your shoulders, which strengthens the muscles. “Your hips should be directly above your ankles and in line with your shoulders. Engage your abdominal muscles as you hold for five. Your neck can either be tucked or neutral, but only if you don’t have neck issues.” Triangle pose “This shoulder and chest opening pose is great for to stretching out your side body. Step your feet roughly three feet apart from one another. Make sure your left foot is at the front of the mat and facing forward. Line the arch of the right foot to the heel of the front foot, and raise your arms to shoulder height. “From here, reach your left arm as far forward as you can, whilst pulling your right hip as far back as possible. Then drop your left hand to a comfortable position on the inside of the left leg, pushing against your shin. This should give you a nice spinal twist and chest opener. Don’t forget to switch sides afterwards.” Words by Liz Connor, PA Pictures credit: PA Photo/iStock
