SO LEN T H E ARI N G S TO P TI P S FO R R ED U C I N G T H E R I S K O F LO S I N G YO U R H E A R I N G A I D S All of us whether we have a hearing loss or not rely on seeing people’s face to pick up on the emotion, expression and lip shape to add to our understanding of what is being said. Of course those of us with a hearing loss rely on this a lot more. When the person we are speaking with is wearing a mask which covers most of their face we lose this information and it can make it a real challenge to follow conversation. In addition to this, face masks can distort and muffle some soft high frequency sounds making it difficult to discriminate some consonants ie; did someone say “chair, stare or share”? Wearing a face mask in public has become increasingly common, even required in some public places, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been well documented that people with hearing loss have found it to be increasingly challenging to communicate with others who are wearing masks, as they muffle sound and eliminate lip reading cues. Unfortunately, that isn’t the only challenge individuals with hearing loss face. The over-the-ear face mask, often the most common style, puts hearing aid wearers at risk for misplacing their behind-the-ear devices when they become entangled upon removal. So, what do N95 face masks, the children’s game “Barrel of Monkeys,” and headbands all have in common? They help provide solutions to this common problem! Below Solent Hearing have shared some recommendations to help reduce your risk of losing your hearing aids. Frequent checking: Remember to keep checking that the hearing aids are still in place during fitting, wearing and following removal of the mask. Before leaving a location check that your hearing aids are still in your ears

Remove one side at a time: Remove one side of the mask at a time, as opposed to both sides at once. Never just pull the mask off, instead carefully hold the hearing aid with one hand whilst removing the mask with the other. Take your time. Alternatively take your hearing aids out first and keep them somewhere safe whilst you then remove the mask. Use both hands: Make sure nothing else is in your hands when putting on or removing your mask. This will free up both hands for the task. Focus only on the task at hand ie, don’t try to fit or remove mask whilst distracted talking on the phone or putting shopping in the car. Find a safe place: If possible fit and remove your mask at home over a table covered with a towel so if the hearing aids fall they land softly, safely, can be easily seen and retrieved. If you can’t do this at home then find a quiet corner of a building where you can check the floor if it falls down or in your car. Remove glasses upwards: When wearing aids, glasses and mask, remove glasses upwards instead of forwards, slowly and whilst standing still. Double check: Before you discard masks or put reusable ones in the washing machine check that your hearing aids are not tangled up in the mask straps. Hearing aid first: Make sure if using an ear loop mask that the loop fits to the outside of the aids – so the loop holds the aids against the head. Whether it is a few statement plants, or a garden filled with exotic greenery, you will be transported to an outdoor oasis.” Exercise space “People who invested in exercise equipment during lockdown will be using it in the garden,” Duff predicts. “And a whole generation has discovered how gardening is a fitness thing.” Ornamental grasses “Other planting styles we predict to be even bigger in 2021 are those that help create a sanctuary of calm, with foliage plants in pots, such as ferns, grasses and bamboo,” Eyles says.

Big ideas for small plots Duff says: “It’s an exciting time because the aesthetic of the garden is changing. People are trying to maximise use, so we’ve seen a lot of fruit and veg being grown throughout lockdown, which will continue into 2021. “If not replacing perennials and annuals, edibles will certainly be an addition and mixed among them. On balconies you might have tomatoes with their amazing foliage, runner beans cascading over railings, and people are seeing the beauty in a plant that’s giving back. Child’s play “As we look to get children excited about the garden and, perhaps, spend more time outside and away from screens, family gardening is on the rise,” Eyles observes. “This involves splitting up your patch, so children can have a dedicated area to care for. A raised bed can be an ideal solution for this. “Get them involved from the beginning by adding personalised signs and finding out what they would like to grow. From sunflowers to carrots, there are plenty of easy-to-grow plants and vegetables.” Winter wonderland “People are going to start seeing winter in a different way and embracing trees without leaves and soil and plants which are dormant. There’s going to be that seasonal embrace,” Duff reckons. “We are seeing the disappearance of the garden that has to look perfect all year round. Grounds for Divorce: How Does it Work? BY TAYLOR DEVENPORT, FAMILY LAW, DUTTON GREGORY It goes without saying that separation and divorce can be one of the most challenging events that a person can face, both emotionally and financially. With the news of ‘no fault divorces’ being introduced later this year, we’re answering commonly asked questions around eligibility and grounds for divorce.

b) A party to the marriage has behaved in such a way that the other party cannot reasonably be expected to continue to live with them;

Alternatively, if you are in a civil partnership, you can apply for a dissolution. What are the different grounds for divorce? In order to succeed with an application for divorce, the court will need to be satisfied that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. Until the ‘no-fault divorce’ is introduced in autumn 2021, this can be shown by producing evidence of one of the following five grounds: a) A party to the marriage has committed adultery and the other party finds it intolerable to continue to live with them;

This is why a significant number of petitions are sought based upon the ground of unreasonable behaviour as it can easily be satisfied by the petitioner by providing sufficient evidence. What is a ‘no-fault divorce’? The government is looking to reform the divorce process to remove the concept of ‘fault’, as many believe this to be out of date. It is believed that by autumn 2021 ‘no-fault divorce’ will become a reality. 1. Preheat your grill to maximum.

4 rashers of streaky bacon (120g) 2 small ripe bananas

2. Lay the rashers of bacon on a baking tray lined with baking parchment. Slide under the

While the pancakes are gently frying, mix the remaining peanut butter with half a tablespoon water in a small bowl. This will loosen it, making it easier to drizzle on the pancakes. 6. Pile the banana pancakes onto a plate. Top with the bacon, drizzle over the peanut butter along with a little maple syrup, if you like. Gobble down, Elvis-style.

R O A D T E S T: P E U G E O T 3 0 0 8 H Y B R I D 4 There was a time when cars touching £40k bore premium badges from the likes of BMW and Mercedes Benz. Well no longer! Premium manufacturers have tried to attract aspiring buyers from the lower price ranges, and other manufacturers have tried to move into the premium sector. One example of the latter is Peugeot. Their models have improved in both looks and build quality over the last few years and the 3008 is a perfect demonstration. Prices start from £27,160 and peak at a premium £47,210, and engines on offer are a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol, a 4-cylinder 1.6-litre turbo petrol, a 1.5 -litre diesel and two plugin hybrids using the 1.6-litre petrol unit with either one or two electric motors. It’s the plug-in hybrids that drew my interest given the direction we’re motoring.

Two 3008 hybrids are offered with an effective 180hp in two wheel drive form and 200hp in four wheel drive form. The latter uses two electric motors, one on each axle, and boosts the power to 300hp. You’ll get around 40 miles on pure electric and a home charger helps the practicalities. It reaches 62 mph in just under 6 seconds. Mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox the whole 3008 experience is a relaxed and refined affair. Switchable drive modes offer all electric, hybrid, sport and all-wheel-drive by a turn of a dial. The four wheel drive offers additional grip all the time but in winter, especially in more rural areas, it would certainly provide an added boost of confidence. The low set and rather small steering wheel divides opinion as you see the instruments above rather than through the wheel.

The interior is a delight, radiating a quality and modern feel it’s a very nice place to be on any journey. Comfortable seats and good space – although the boot is smaller than you might expect because of those batteries – help matters along too. Having arguably led the drive for digital cockpits the 3008 continues the theme, a direction I’m not convinced by but the Peugeot’s controls are very intuitive. Other manufacturers would do well to take note. Priced at £44,810 for my GT model I’m not convinced the four wheel drive version is worth the hefty chunk of extra cash over the £39,810 two wheel drive version. Whichever you choose I doubt you will be disappointed because this is one very stylish, impressive and comfortable SUV.

H I S PA N O S U I Z A CAR M EN B O U LO G N E ON THE ROAD Hispano Suiza has launched a second model, the Carmen Boulogne, a sportier evolution of the Carmen. The Carmen Boulogne is a fully electric hypercar designed, developed and manufactured in Barcelona (Spain), of which only five will be made. The Boulogne name dates back to 1921, when Hispano Suiza made a racing version of its high-performance H6 Coupé and entered it in the George Boillot Cup, an endurance race lasting more than 3.5 hours around the French city of Boulogne. The car delivers 1114 CV (820 kW) - 95 CV more than the Hispano Suiza Carmen - a maximum speed limited to 180 mph and an acceleration of 0-62 mph in just 2.6s. The lithium-ion polymer battery has a capacity of 80 kWh that allows it to develop a driving range of up to 400 km. The batteries are designed and produced inhouse and it has a fast-charging capacity of more than 80 kW DC, requiring only 30 minutes to charge 30-80% through a CCS2 fast charger. It also has CHAdeMO and GB/T charging options. The price of the Hispano Suiza Carmen Boulogne starts from approximately £1.5 million.

Originally a traditional estate car the Forester has morphed into a crossover and a very capable one that can tackle surprisingly tough off-road situations. It’s permanent all-wheel-drive offers power to the wheels that have most traction. It also has additional tricks in its armoury with what Subaru call X-Drive that includes hill descent control and management of everything on the all-wheel-drive so you concentrate on steering your way through the off-road terrain. I know from personal experience this is a very capable machine.

Prices start from €40,678 (£36,335) for the 2.0-litre e-Boxer model and that nets you all-wheel-drive, keyless entry and start, steering lights with high beam assist, the usual function filled sound and Bluetooth features, heated front seats, powered and heated door mirrors, windscreen wiper de-icing, cruise control and satellite navigation to name a few. There are only two trim levels and the next level up ((€44,036/£39, 335) gains leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats and steering wheel. The entry level model arguably looks the better bet on price and equipment. Mechanicals stay the same irrespective of model.

The Forester is available in a very mild hybrid form. Even with this it isn’t the most economical though and rivals will offer better figures. The mild hybrid has a small battery and electric motor which recovers energy under deceleration from braking and coasting, and then deploys it to assist the petrol engine as you accelerate. Considering its size, it is big, the Forester doesn’t feel unwieldy on the road. With tidy

This is one of those cars that just grows on you and inspires confidence on the road. I don’t think there are many cars, as opposed to off-road SUVs, that you would feel able to take on any terrain and conditions the weather can muster. The Forester is more of an intelligent choice, a proper lifestyle vehicle for all conditions.

R O A D T E S T: N E W 4 - S E R I E S M O D E L L I N E - U P BMW have long had coupes in their line-up, from their early pre-war beginnings with the 327/328 right up to the present day. One of their newest coupes is the latest 4-Series. The model nomenclature has become a little stretched, what was previously the 3-Series Coupe has morphed into the 4-Series, this sensibly leaves the 3-Series as a saloon or Tourer and the 4-series as the convertible, coupe and gran coupe. Prices for the new 4-Series Coupe start from £40,460 for the petrol 184hp M Sport 420i. There’s a choice of both petrol and diesel 4-cylinder turbo power units, a 6-cylinder petrol along with all-wheel-drive, and every model features the same 8-speed sport steptronic automatic gearbox.

and irrespective of your thoughts it would be shame to let it detract from what is a first class coupe. On the examples that I drove the steering could do with a little more feel but that apart there’s little to fault. The ride comfort even in models with larger wheels is very good and lacks the characteristic firmness one might have expected. It doesn’t bring any negative consequences for the handling, which is nice and precise and makes the car fun across more twisting roads. Both the petrol and diesel engines are smooth and refined

units with plenty of torque, but especially in the diesel units as one might expect. Two main test models, one being the 420d M Sport Pro Edition at £46,170. However as with most German cars tick a few options boxes and the price climbs, in this case by £5,600 for a Technology and Comfort Plus packs. Add the on-the-road costs and the final price is £52,675. Refined and being diesel more economical than petrol engines there is still a demand for diesel power. It’s also cleaner than the current negativity may suggest. Standard equipment across the 4-Series Coupe line-up is good with all version gaining alloy wheels at least 18 inches in diameter, LED headlights, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a 10.25inch infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. For the first time, front collision warning and lane-departure warning systems are also standard on the 4 Series, too.

The first thing that strikes you on all the latest BMWs, and the 4-Series is no exception, is that new grille. It has divided more opinion than Marmite! It arguably looks better in a darker colour such as black,

R O A D T E S T: S E AT MII AND THE EV LIFE Electric vehicles have been making the automotive headlines for some while, and with the recent announcement of no new petrol or diesel cars from 2030 (Hybrids 2035) only serves to put them even more into the headlines. Range anxiety, a fragmented public charging infrastructure and price consistently hinder the progress of EVs. However, if you have a home charger and mainly drive lots of local commuting runs then an EV could be for you. More expensive EVs tend offer the greater range, both stated and in the real world. Move to the cheaper, well relatively, and you lose range but gain more affordable purchase prices. SEAT’s diminutive Mii is now only available in all-electric form and suits the car well. In its previous petrol incarnation it made a super town car, and now with its new electric power it’s even better. It costs £22,800, but you gain a £3,000 reduction via a government grant which helps make the purchase price more palatable. It comes with excellent levels of equipment and a useable range.

That range is 160 miles, but in the real-world that very much depends on how and where you drive. In my busy week I00 miles was my maximum range, but that was while making full use of the Mii’s features and some cruising on dual carriageways. EVs thrive in stop start motoring to maximise their range. I would guess in city motoring you would easily manage 120-140 miles. Any more would most likely require use of the eco button on the Mii, which cuts down on features to maximise the range. On the road the Mii is a delight, small, nimble and good fun. Its perky demeanour belies the rather lazy 0 to 62 mph of 12.3 seconds and top speed of 81 mph. It smooths the bumps and its quiet drive only enhances its appeal on a daily basis. Four people would be fine in its seats for shorter journeys, two adults and two children would be very comfortable. Although the boot space is somewhat limited, it easily accommodates the urban luggage that would result from the Mii’s city life. This is a smart and well-equipped city car that would offset some of its higher purchase price with low running costs by home charging. It charges quickly and has a very useable commuter range. The Mii is an excellent and very useable introduction to EV life.

Kimchi caulif lower fried rice recipe SERVES 2

INGREDIENTS

1 small cauliflower

1. Cut the cauliflower into small florets, then pulse in a food processor until the pieces are the size of couscous.

2tbsp olive oil 2tsp toasted sesame oil

2. Heat the olive and sesame oils in a large frying pan over a high heat.

1 small bunch of kale, central ribs removed, leaves sliced into ribbons 2 spring onions, thinly sliced

3. Add the kale and cauliflower rice and sauté for three to five minutes until the kale is wilted and the cauliflower rice is beginning to brown.

SERVES 4

1. Place the beef, pork, ricotta, onions, garlic, rosemary, Parmesan, breadcrumbs and beaten egg in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Mix well. Using your hands, INGREDIENTS

Roast pumpkin, mozzarella and chilli recipe SERVES 2

INGREDIENTS

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4.

1 small pumpkin, deseeded and cut into 5cm-thick wedges 2tbsp olive oil

2. Place the pumpkin in a baking tray or roasting dish. Brush with the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes or until browned at the edges.
