With a speciality in critical care, she was also a district nurse for many years.
T H E B R I T I S H M O T O R YA C H T S H O W C O N F I R M E D F O R M AY 2 0 2 1 Premier Marinas is delighted to announce that the prestigious British Motor Yacht Show 2021 will take place at its flagship marina at Swanwick on the Hamble River. Now in its 8th year, the show will extend to nine days from Saturday 15th May to Sunday 23rd May 2021; giving everyone the opportunity to view the boats they want to see in a relax and socially distanced environment. This will be the second British Motor Yacht Show to run under pandemic conditions: in August 2020 the British Motor Yacht Show was the UK’s only high profile boat show to proceed. The success of the show was largely due to the generous pontoon layout at Swanwick, the organiser’s strict adherence to COVID-19 regulations and their approach to ‘by a private appointment only’ viewings for attendees.
Backed by top British luxury motor yacht brands Fairline, Sunseeker and Princess, and hosted by Premier the UK’s leading marina group, the 2021 show will feature a stunning line up of motor yachts from British brands – including new for this year Pearl - plus a selection of prestigious exhibits chosen by the organisers from the best motor yacht manufacturers in the world. Alongside the in-water displays there will be boats ashore to view and with the by appoint only system in place, this will be a ‘must visit’ for serious buyers who appreciate the private time to view each vessel in an atmosphere where unhurried conversations can take place with the various dealers.
Commenting on her new role, Esmarié said, “I thoroughly enjoy working within my local community and making a real difference to the lives of others, I love people! “The Lymphoedema Clinic is often the one constant in a patient’s cancer journey. Our patients know that we can provide a safe environment, not only to treat their physical problems but also a listening ear to help with their mental wellbeing, in total confidence. I am really looking forward to my role at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and supporting our patients across East Dorset and Purbeck.”
For those who wish to find out more about the show, and to book a private appointment to visit, further information can be found at www.britishmotoryachtshow.com.

Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, is one of more than 100 UK arts organisations to benefit from the Weston Culture Fund, established in response to the impacts of Covid-19 by the Garfield Weston Foundation, one of the country’s most respected charitable institutions with a long history of supporting arts and culture in the community.
Despite the challenging market conditions created by the pandemic, Pennyfarthing Homes has seen an increase in demand from interested home movers with all the homes at Abbey Court in New Milton now sold and just one home remaining at The Swifts in Milford on Sea.
The £290,000 grant will support the artistic programme and enable Lighthouse to build for the future by mitigating the risk of programming shows and establishing a new Creation Hub to support performing artists in its Sherling Studio for the development of new work. “Lighthouse is hugely grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation for this grant as it means we can plan for the future, post-pandemic,” says Chief Executive Elspeth McBain. “This funding will enable us to restart our work, refresh activities, re-engage audiences and widen the cultural offering to our community, providing opportunities to build a strong programme whilst also supporting smaller artistic companies.”
EC O A M B I T I O N S AC H I E V E D BY B A R K E R D RY C L E A N I N G & L AU N D RY Dorset based Barker, the largest domestic laundry in the UK and a leading specialists Dry Cleaner, is reflecting on its eco journey to date and achieving the ambitious targets set by the business. Among the company’s eco initiatives are an investment in washing/water heating technology, a drive to remove single use plastic from packaging across the entire business and a project to reduce electricity via LED replacement of all lighting, an initiative that was completed earlier in 2020. The cost of these initiatives has meant an investment of over £100,000 over the last two years. MD Matthew Barker said, “Three years ago at Barker we set ourselves the ambitious target of reducing our use of ‘single use’ plastic by 90%. We are extremely proud to say that we have achieved this ambition, particularly pleasing too as it’s been achieved despite the recent challenges of covid. We have converted almost 95% of our 2500 domestic laundry customers to long lasting laundry boxes which, whilst still plastic, have a 20- year life span.
The remaining home is The Castlebury, a stunning four-bedroom detached family home which boasts a dual aspect living room and a spacious kitchen, dining and family room with two of the four bedrooms benefitting from en suite bathrooms. The home also features a ground floor home office perfect for working and learning from home which could also double up as a guest bedroom when family can visit again. The position of the home offers sea views across to the Isle of Wight. To find out more about the final home at The Swifts and arrange a private viewing contact the sales team on 01590 615411 or email theswifts@pennyfarthinghomes.co.uk. Alternatively to find out about the homes at Fernlea contact call 01202 403143 or email fernlea@pennyfarthinghomes.co.uk.
“The investment and commitment that the business has made is certainly the right course of action. We have further ideas and initiatives which we shall review over the coming months.”

G A L E S S O L I C I T O R S L O O K AT C O U R T APPE AR AN C ES D U R I N G LO C K D OW N Bournemouth based Gales Solicitors is reporting increased court case hearing activity, with court hearings taking place by telephone, video and in person. Senior Partner Matthew Moore said, “In 2020, in the spring and early summer, most court hearings were suspended. It’s really positive that hearings are now taking place in the current climate and in a variety of different ways. “There are challenges, obviously, in practical terms of court cases being heard across different platforms but generally it’s working and cases are being processed. Processes might be slower than normal
and administration speed can vary in the different courts. Remote hearings are allowing me to attend a greater number of court cases, which is also quite unprecedented as these hearings have been across a number of towns and cities, without me once leaving the office! The advantage of remote hearings is that they tend to run very efficiently and on time, without the usual delays. There is no travelling time too which all means reduced hearing costs for our clients. Anyone seeking advice from Gales Solicitors is urged to call 01202 512227 or email mail@gales-solicitors.co.uk

As a broker we recommend that you have your building professionally assessed every 3-5 years to ensure your declared value is adequate, to avoid any liability to you. Getting someone to visit your block of flats to carry out a professional assessment can be time consuming and expensive. However, thanks to our partnership with RebuildCostAssessment.com we can offer a reliable low-cost service from a ‘Regulated by RICS’ (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) organisation. This is a fantastic and affordable online service which can protect your property from the potentially severe consequences of under insurance.

Ways to nail the new neutrals Here’s how to bring home the beauty of beige, says Sam Wylie-Harris. Sometimes, instead of clashing and chaos, what we really want is neutral and nice. Cool, calming tones can bring a sense of wellbeing, which many of us have been craving more than ever. Especially if you’re coming to terms with some home truths after all this extra time indoors – like realising you’ve gone off those vibrant hues and over-the-top colour choices you made before lockdown. Indeed, rediscovering elegant simplicity seems like a trend we return to time and time again. And it’s chic… expressing yourself with a pale palette is an art form itself. Working with neutrals is about blending and balancing tones and textures. Far from boring, this is about leaning into the less-is-more style book, with schemes that feel clean and fresh. Here’s what’s on our creamy checklist… The vintage look Antiqued Glass Mirrors, from £75 (other items from a selection), Graham & Green (Pictured left. PA Photo/ Graham and Green) With their distressed gilt frames, these vintage look mirrors whisper shabby chic and will play up everything they reflect. For maximum impact, angle them when you hang them (or place them on a sideboard) so they capture cornicing or pendant lighting. Come to think of it, even an unadorned wall if you’re really maxing a minimalist scheme.

Strokes and Medical Negligence BY MICHAEL KINGMAN, SENIOR ASSOCIATE SOLICITOR, DUTTON GREGORY Strokes can sometimes seriously impact an individual’s quality of life. If you believe it could have been prevented with better medical care, you may wish to make a compensation claim. What is a stroke? A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, brain cells die and may cause devastating physical injuries and there may be serious mental consequences for the individual.
When may there be a possible clinical/medical negligence claim? Although sometimes there may be a negligent delay in treating a stroke, most cases of negligence arise because the stroke itself could have been prevented. If it can be shown that this was as a result of sub-standard medical treatment, there may be a claim for substantial compensation. Negligence may arise by reason of: •
A failure to treat high blood pressure;
Research has shown that, although the number of people in England dying from a stroke has fallen, there has been a worrying rise in people aged 35 to 54 who have suffered strokes.
•
A failure to provide clot-busting therapy;
•
A delay in performing a scan;
•
A delay in diagnosing a haemorrhage;
What are the symptoms of a stroke?
•
A delay in surgical or medical treatment.
The symptoms of a stroke are often very clear and medical professionals will have a strong suspicion that a patient has suffered a stroke based on these signs.
What compensation could I receive?
I’m sure we all know the government’s “Act FAST” campaign to educate the public on the signs of a stroke: •
Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?
•
Arms – can they raise both arms and keep them there?
•
Speech – is their speech slurred?
•
Time to call 999 if you see any one of these signs
Time is of the essence when someone has suffered a stroke, particularly when associated with a blood clot. If the stroke is not treated promptly, damage to the brain can be extensive which can lead to permanent severe disability. Disabilities can include loss of speech, one sided physical impairment, loss of vision, memory loss and a reduction in cognitive functioning.
Following a stroke, rehabilitation can help individuals improve both their physical and cognitive impairments. The cost of such rehabilitation on a private basis can be included within the claim, along with other care needs. This is in addition to any compensation owed due to any pain, suffering or emotional stressed caused. Total compensation may be significant. In a claim that settled in 2014, a 41-year-old woman received £735,000 for left-sided paralysis which arose because her GP failed to make a referral to a neurologist in September 2009. How can I speak to a lawyer about my claim? You can contact our team for a confidential, non-committed, free initial advice on your case and how we can help you. This is why American holidays could be great again Political change is inspiring people to book future travel, says Sarah Marshall. As Joe Biden takes his seat as the new President, all eyes have been on the USA recently. America has always been a popular holiday destination for English-speaking travellers, with 52 varied states to explore. Whether spending time in fast-paced cities, relaxing on sandy beaches or diving into a star-spangled celebration of American culture, the choice of bucketlist activities seems endless. Even though current times are challenging, looking ahead, there’s a general sense of optimism in future travel. Tour operator Abercrombie & Kent (A&K) has reported an uptick in enquiries for US holidays, coinciding with a new dawn at the White House – a phenomena dubbed the Biden Boost. “Arguably the most well-known country on earth, the USA is abundant with once-in-a-lifetime sights,” says Kerry Golds, managing director of A&K. “We’ve seen a boost in enquiries overall with vaccine confidence, but one country that stands out is the USA, for travel later in the year.” Seeking some inspiration? Here are a few suggestions to spark a sense of stateside wanderlust.

Best for urban adventures: New York and Las Vegas The stars of multiple blockbuster movies, New York and Las Vegas have eternal A-list appeal. Take a trip to the Big Apple for shopping at one-of-a-kind boutiques in the East Village, catching a theatre show on Broadway or simply wandering through Manhattan’s maze of skyscrapers. Twin with a stay in Vegas for glitz, glamour and fun, where 24-hour casinos and non-stop neon blur the boundaries between day and night. American Sky (americansky.co.uk) offers a seven-night holiday at the Royalton Park Avenue in New York and the ARIA Resort & Casino in Vegas from £1,599 per person, including flights and room-only accommodation. Best for wine lovers: California California is regarded as the largest and most important wine region in North America, thanks to its complex topography and climate. Vintages grace menus across the globe, but sampled at source, they taste even better. Discover Napa Valley’s vineyards on a private guided tour, learn how to expertly pair dishes with wines on a cooking class at Peju Vineyards, and cycle between tastings on a tour of Sonoma Valley. Finish the trip off with a hike below the towering trees soaring from the Armstrong Redwoods Reserve. Abercrombie & Kent (abercrombiekent.co.uk) can tailormake a tour. POA.

Ways how to make lockdown workouts more fun
There’s nothing worse than doing the same workout day-in, day-out, with no end in sight – so we asked fitness pros for their advice. It’s now almost a year since we first went into lockdown, so it’s understandable that you might be struggling with motivation and enjoyment in your workouts. Cycling through the same exercises in the same living room can quickly feel like Groundhog Day – especially if you’re used to hitting the gym and having variety in your routine. But it’s possible to make exercise feel less like a chore – even if you feel like you’re in a workout rut. We asked a handful of personal trainers to share their top tips for getting your mojo back. Update your playlist, says Hendrick Famutimi (@supermanhf) “If I had to choose one top tip for making workouts more fun at home, I would say, give yourself a massive music playlist with your favourite songs – especially ones you might not have heard in a long time. “This will get you in a party mood while you’re working out. I like to listen to Nineties hip hop, late Nineties pop, Nineties RnB, and some other embarrassing songs that will have me shaking a leg. “I spend hours selecting music for my online clients and members who get involved in my virtual fitness classes, and it’s one of the things that keeps them going. Music has energy.” Set some goals, says Luke Worthington (@lukewtraining) “Focus on what we can improve and set yourself goals to mark your progress. While there may be some aspects of our health and fitness that are harder to improve at home, lets not forget that there are others where we can make some real tangible progress.
“Movement quality and mobility may not be top of everyone’s to-do list when gyms and studios are open, but these often neglected areas are important, and they are also areas that we can train with minimal or no equipment. “When we set a tangible goal, we are more likely to work consistently towards achieving it. And when we achieve it, the sense of fulfilment feeds our motivation to continue. In health and fitness, consistency is king.”

Try a live workout, says Aimee Victoria Long (@aimeevictorialong) “I would advise anyone that’s lost their workout motivation to try joining live workouts, where you can interact with the trainer and others. “Workouts on platforms such as LIVENow Fitness (live-now.com) have options where you can create rooms and invite your friends to workout with you. It makes it so much more fun, as you can motivate each other and set yourself little challenges. It almost feels like you are together – and is definitely the next best thing.” Add some variety to your workouts, says Zack George (@zackgeorge) “One big piece of advice I would offer is to add variety to what you’re doing. Changing up your workouts and doing something different every single day means you’re unlikely to get bored, you’ll learn new skills and see improvements in different areas of your fitness or training. “All of this compounds to increased motivation and ultimately enjoyment, and you’ll get your mojo back in no time. The sport I compete in, CrossFit, is the perfect style of training to try out, as you’ll rarely ever do the same workout twice. “It’s

and multi-skilled. Don’t worry about not having access to a gym too, as you can do CrossFit-style workouts with minimal or no equipment.” Words by Liz Connor, PA

Preserving the legacy of successful business owners
Why do ethical business owners deserve to get paid well when selling a successful business? There are untold reasons why successful business owners who want to sell ethically, deserve to get paid well. Firstly, selling ethically means that you care about how well the new buyer is going to preserve your legacy. Meaning, you want to get paid well for selling your business, MOREOVER, you also want to ensure that your staff are looked after and the culture you have built over the years, along with your company name and location are maintained. All too often, a trade buyer will do whatever it takes to maximise profitability from acquiring your business. This often includes “streamlining the business”, such as making redundancies, moving the offices to lower cost locations, increasing prices to customers and cutting corners on quality and service level to your customers. Surely there is a better way? If you want to find out more about how we can help you contact Robbie Mair, 07900 555217 or you can visit www.K-ZenGroup.com.

Trend-setting UK campsites to book this summer
With a summer staycation looking hopeful, a camping trip is on the cards, says Sarah Marshall
As a cloud of uncertainty still hangs over foreign holidays this summer, the UK looks set for another bumper year of staycations. Once again, camping looks likely to be popular, as travellers seek to explore nature and rediscover a sense of adventure. According to a new report by website Cool Camping, who sell a variety of campsite holidays, treehouse accommodation is set to be a big trend. By studying page views, they estimated a whopping 1,624 interested customers

treehouse.
Unsurprisingly, given booking habits last summer, glampsites are also likely to sell out fast. The website says almost 50% of enquiries request a hot tub. Other anticipated trends for 2021 include a rise in ‘en-pitch’ accommodations, offering private toilet facilities, plus an increase in pop-up campsites, which were also popular last year. TREETOP ADVENTURES Where: Melin Mabes, Pembrokeshire The quirky Templar Treehouse has its own private hot tub, plus a slide to take you down to the ground. The property features a combination of rustic charm and firstclass amenities, with underfloor heating, a modern bathroom, antique kitchen, suspended loungers and veranda with a view to the river. From £152 per night, sleeping two people. FAMILY NOSTALGIA Where: Fisherground Campsite, Cumbria For those looking for a more traditional grass pitch option, Fisherground Campsite in Eskdale is a popular choice. It’s a great choice for families, as there is plenty for the kids to enjoy, including campfires, a paddling pond and the nearby steam railways line, which can transport you to and from the campsite. THINKING RETIREMENT LIVING – I S T H E R E A N O T H E R W AY ? Local retirement specialist Gemma shares her thoughts
When you’re selling your much-loved home, one of the
MANY over 55’s are living on low or moderate incomes and often struggle with the upkeep to their homes and access to the care they need. With a sky-high cost of living and uncertain economy, there’s never been a more important time to recognise the value in our homes to help improve our lives as we get older.
biggest decisions you need to make is which estate agent to go with. Do you choose a local independent or a large national agency? Is it better to trust your sale to a long-standing high street agent or a newer, online-based company? Who’s going to get you the right buyer and the best price and also be there to answer all your questions when you need them to?
If you’ve owned your home for a few years, it’s likely you’ve built some equity in it. Perhaps you’d love to downsize or use a lifetime mortgage product to release equity to pay for your retirement.
Like so much in life, it’s a combination of due diligence and gut feeling. Having the right estate agent as your selling partner can make the difference between an ‘okay’ sale and a great one, so take your time deciding.
Maybe you are searching for a property that’s more suited to your needs today, or for the future. Whatever your reasons, with Platinum Skies shared ownership you can afford to buy a brand-new property at a truly affordable price.
Once you’ve got a clear idea of why you’re selling, your ideal timescale and your future plans, it’s time to do some online research. You can find out a lot about an agent by looking at their website and their google reviews.
If you were considering equity release, then you can access more capital with shared ownership than by using a typical equity release scheme, without suffering high interest rates and financial penalties that may erode your investment.
After you’ve narrowed down the choices, there’s the face-to-face meeting. This gives you the chance to find out more about the agent’s knowledge and expertise and get their opinion on how much you should be selling for. You’ll also be able to get a good feel for the people behind the company and how they
As a registered provider of the Older Persons Shared Ownership scheme, all rental charges and fees are set by the Government body, Homes England. ASK THE EXPERT
T H E W O N K Y TA B L E Just over a month on from the government closure of hospitality businesses and the beginning of the countrywide lockdown, I want to extend our warmest wishes to everyone during what is truly one of the toughest times we will see in our lifetime. Hospitality owners and operators are becoming increasingly reliant on the government’s financial support and with tourism being one of the leading economical revenue streams in Bournemouth and all along the South Coast it is vital that business owners are able to access the support they so desperately need to survive. From a small “group of mates discussing the ‘what just happened’ moment when we were closed” and following a desire to help the wider community to make the most of Government’s Grant availability, accessing and dealing with the Job Retention Scheme and pooling thoughts and fears on “the Phased Return”, The Wonky Table was born. The group has now spread across the whole conurbation including Christchurch, Poole, Bournemouth and Wimborne. Now with over 80 Hospitality Owner/Operator participants representing over 140+ venues from all over the conurbations the group is growing every day. Staying connected is more important than ever. I only set the group up to share some thoughts back in March but TWT is getting bigger and bigger, we now want to make public our existence with all those in the Hospitality Industry in the hope that we can unite to share knowledge, resources and advice. The next step is getting ready (and making sure everyone is ready) for Post-C19. Ultimately, if there has ever been a time for us to come together, it is now.

Ways to style up your outdoor living space Sam Wylie-Harris ventures outside and rounds up some top picks for balconies, patios, gardens and conservatories. As spring approaches and we start busying ourselves with thoughts of spending more time outside – and touch wood, hopefully eventually being able to invite a friend or two into our gardens – it’s time to dial up the outdoor decor. Don’t have a sprawling lawn, patio or green oasis to work with? Well, don’t look away now, because we’re on it. These

Hello spring! It has felt like a long winter but the mere whisper of spring makes our confinement feel a little more bearable. With it comes the promise of warmer weather and the hope that we can spend more time in the sanctuary of our gardens and outdoor spaces. The last year has made us find a new appreciation for them with many people investing time and money in updating their old and tired furniture, decking and accessories so they can relax in style and take in some much needed fresh air. At Reformed Plastics we offer a range of bespoke furniture, anti-slip decking, gates, fencing and planters suitable for a variety of environments. These can not only add the sense of substance as well as practicality to a space, but they can also make the great finishing touch to any rejuvenation project.
All of our products are made from 100% recycled plastic. We manufacture products ourselves and then sell direct to the Domestic and Commercial sector.
From
concept to completion, our experienced and dedicated team based at our Parley workshop will make it their mission, for you to get the most out of your outdoor space for the best price possible! Due to the ever increasing importance to recycle and protect the environment, the plastic used is recycled in the UK and is the perfect maintenance free alternative to wood. Our aims are to help rebuild the environment by utilising a commodity which

R O A D T E S T: H O N D A J A Z Z C R O S S TA R It’s rare that I drive a car and subsequently struggle to form any kind of strong opinion for the following write-up. Honda’s Jazz Crosstar has succeeded though. Essentially the Crosstar is an SUV style package added to a standard Jazz. Priced at £23,385 it comes with increased ride height, black cladding for the sills and wheel arches, 16” alloys, a different front grille and water resistant upholstery. Based on the standard EX the Crosstar is essentially all about dressing. Power comes via a 1.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid engine with twin electric motors and a CVT transmission to drive the front wheels. It’s a smooth and refined affair until you press on with any serious acceleration, when it becomes somewhat frenetic while it gathers momentum. A quite common CVT trait found in other similarly geared cars apart from Hondas. The Crosstar rides well, successfully ironing out the worst excesses of the multipatched roads common in my part of the world. From a pure driving point of view though it’s a rather anodyne affair and will most likely be bought by those who need
transport rather than something to set the driving senses aflutter. That’s no bad thing either because being a Honda it’ll be uber reliable, there’s plenty of space for such a small car and it’s a comfortable place to be for your daily commute. There is, again unsurprisingly being Honda, a quality feel with a nice interior mix of fabric and other trim materials. Lots of space for your in-car detritus and my test model had a rather cool interior look compared to most superminis of the same price and ilk. Externally my test model came in a shade of paint called Surf Blue that many people commented upon in favourable terms. I wasn’t quite so taken not least because of the extra £950 cost.
115
The standard equipment in the Crosstar is very good with such goodies as keyless entry and start, parking sensors, satellite navigation, adaptive cruise control, heated seats, powered mirrors, auto lights and wipers and rear parking camera. The infotainment system is very comprehensive and the sound quality is better than in some premium cars I have sampled. The Jazz Crosstar certainly has appeal if you want a commuter car with the look of something more, but from a purely practical and common sense approach the standard EX model seems a better bet and £1,285 cheaper too.

The iconic Speedback GT model – the staple of David Brown Automotive’s product line-up since the famous British brand was launched in 2013 – underwent an 8,000hour build process at the luxury sports car maker’s purpose-built Silverstone manufacturing facility, where the company

R O A D T E S T: L A N D R O V E R D I S C O V E R Y S P O R T – H I G H LY EFFECTIVE AN D CO N FID EN C E IN S PIRIN G O FF- ROAD Since first emerging from the Rover car company in 1947, as a prototype with a central driving position, Land Rover has been synonymous with off-road prowess. In fact the last Defender still owed much to its immediate post-war cousin. Of course today the talk is once again all about Defender, but this time in its newest form. Which brings me neatly on to talk about a completely different Land Rover! The Discovery Sport, although having a rather trendy and upmarket image, is in today’s terms really rather affordable. Prices for the 2021 model range start at just under £32,000, and if that seems somewhat less than cheap consider that I have recently been driving a Toyota RAV4 that’s listed at £35,500.
My particular Discovery Sport was an R-Dynamic S Plus, with four-wheel-drive, turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, mild hybrid electric assistance and automatic transmission. The easy way to tell a Sport from a standard Discovery is not only the size but the Sport doesn’t have that, to some, rather annoying offset rear number plate. Priced from £38,955 the Dynamic versions represent a good step up from entry level for a relatively small price increase. Of course by the time you’ve ticked some option boxes the price can climb quicker than a
Land Rover up a mountain. My test model had over £6,000 in options. That said the standard, although it is rather more than that, specification is pretty decent. Privacy glass, power tailgate, powered, heated and dimming door mirrors, powered and heated front seats, leather, surround camera, 10” touch screen, navigation, smartphone connectivity and a panoply of safety kit and a myriad of other standard features. Reliability has to be mentioned as there’s much talk about the lack of it with Land Rovers. While I know people who have had issues, equally I know many that have experienced no issues whatsoever. The all-wheel-drive of my Discovery was tested in genuine snowy conditions in which it was, unsurprisingly, highly effective and confidence inspiring. Inside the Land Rover it’s a very nice place to be, a mix of modern tech and quality materials. Good power delivery, smooth gear changes and decent handling are the hallmarks of what is an impressive machine.
The other thing that surprises with the Discovery Sport is a lead-in model with two-wheel-drive. More SUVs come in two-wheel-drive than four nowadays but a two-wheel-drive Land Rover still comes as surprise.

A new design for the 19-inch alloy wheels is also introduced, and ‘Electric Blue’ exterior paint is also introduced to the ’GT S’ for the first time. Inside, the overall architecture of the cabin remains the same, but subtle visual, material, and textural enhancements create a more luxurious ambience. The rear-view mirror is now frameless, creating a classy, modern look and also has the benefit of enhancing rearward visibility. A concert hall quality 15-speaker harman/ Kardon® premium system with subwoofer, external amplifier and front centre speaker is featured as standard on the latest Stinger. It features Clari-Fi, which restores the sound often lost when digital music files are heavily compressed, and QuantumLogic Surround Sound, which redistributes signals from the original recording to deliver multi-dimensional playback. The new Stinger adds features such as a ‘connected car’ Remote Engine Start system, which allows owners to start their car remotely using the Stinger’s smart key. Available to pre-order now from Kia showrooms, the Stinger ‘GT S’ is priced from £42,595.
ROAD TEST: AU D I A3 S- LI N E SALO O N – A VERY TEM P TI N G PAC K AG E German cars have been loved by us Brits for many years and we are one of the best markets for all German car makers. What is it we like about German cars? Well in many respects their character plays a part. They are seen as efficient, the interior lay out is always sensible and ordered, they tend to look discreet and are very well bolted together in most respects. They’re a clever lot the Germans in that they have halo cars such as VW’s R models and Audi’s S models. However, look at most of the lower ranks of their ranges and they still manage to make them look rather more than they actually are in terms of upmarket looks and style. Audi has many good examples of this and one is their A3 saloon. Saloons always seem classier, despite the fact that hatchbacks are distinctly more practical, and my test example was no exception. The range starts at £25,255 and there are four trim levels, two petrol and two diesel engines, plus a choice of manual or automatic gears. My S-Line test model with 150PS petrol power and automatic gears looked suitably expensive, which at £31,010 with some options isn’t actually the case by today’s standards. The £2240 worth of options

included metallic paintwork, only solid black or white are offered at no cost, superb Matrix LED lights and a flat bottom steering wheel. On the road its 4-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine is delightfully smooth and the automatic gears are an object lesson in how to do dualclutch gearboxes. Passing the benchmark 62mph in a whisker under 8.5 seconds proves even the more mundane Audis are capable of rapid movement. S-Line models were once possessed of suspension that was on the firm side of firm, but my test model offered a nice line between comfort and handling. The usual smart interior offers an essentially digital dash instead of buttons, sadly, but it works better than in some VAG models. Being a conventional three-boxsaloon, rather than a lowered rear roofline, means headroom isn’t sacrificed at the expense of neck contortions to enter and exit the rear seats. It’s a very tempting package that offers the looks of a more sporting, more expensive A3, very decent levels of equipment and a level of build quality and finish that is hard to beat. Choose one in red and it looks a million dollars!

R O A D T E S T: NISSAN LEAF It led the electric vehicle charge but the Leaf is not Nissan’s first electric vehicle. The company’s electric ambitions go back to the 1940s and finally reached series production with the Leaf in 2010. Since it debuted the Leaf’s range has gradually been extended and today there are two versions with 168 miles or 239 miles of range. In the real world of course you would be lucky to reach that goal, but the Nissan has the potential to get reasonably close to its limit given the right driving situation. EVs don’t like motorways because there’s less braking which means less regeneration so the battery doesn’t get as much charge. Move into an urban scenario and that changes for the better. Having said all that the Leaf offers greater journey length for its price than many EVs. It also provides practicality, seating for up to five people and a boot to match.
the arguably more practical 62 kwh version with that greater 239 mile range. Standard fare in the Leaf is good even on the entry level model and includes such items as auto lights and high beam assist, auto wipers, adaptive cruise control, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, DAB radio, Bluetooth and a plethora of safety kit.
Prices start from a very competitive, for an EV, £26,845 on the lead-in 40 kwh model with a range of 168 miles. My test model was
There’s some impressive tech on the Leaf including e-Pedal that allows you to just use your right foot as when you ease off
the throttle the car brakes. Depending how quickly you ease off decides on the level of braking, so it’s fairly easy to learn to feather the throttle. It’s one of those things where until you’ve experienced it you wonder what’s the point. Try it and you realise just how easy it makes the driving. Add an Eco mode, along with increased regenerative braking, and there are plenty of opportunities to maximise range. Prices for the longer range 239 mile model start at £32,695 and bring increased specification and performance. The Leaf set the trend and continues to be a sound EV choice. In some areas it shows its age against more digital competitors but personally I’d rather have buttons than digital. If you want an affordable EV combining practicality and decent equipment levels then the Leaf is a hard act to beat.

Kwoklyn Wan: How I went from kung fu to cooking The Chinese cookery expert and brother of TV’s Gok talks to Katie Wright about cutting his teeth early and the joy of experimenting in the kitchen.
For Kwoklyn Wan, cooking has always been a family affair. Growing up in Leicester in the Seventies, the chef has fond memories of a childhood spent running around the city’s first Cantonese restaurant, owned by his parents, Myra and John. “It was very much our playground growing up,” says the 48-year-old, describing days spent “literally crawling under the tables – because when you’re a kid you always want dens, don’t you?” with younger brother Gok, who went on to find fame as a TV presenter. “My brother and I, there’s only a year and a couple of months between us. We were terrible, we were more like twins and we would get ourselves into a lot of of trouble. There are pictures of us when we’re three or four years old and we’re in bow ties, white shirts and black trousers. My dad would literally parade us around, you know, ‘This is a family-run restaurant’.” As they got older, the mischievous brothers, along with sister Oilen, were enlisted in the kitchen. “Mum and dad could ring us from downstairs and say, ‘We’re really busy, you need to come downstairs and help out’, whether that was washing or peeling onions or peeling carrots, or even just tossing fried rice. And that’s how you learn the trade.” Wan is still based in Leicester, where he lives with wife Lisa Jayne and daughters Maya-Lily, 20, and Lola-Rose, 14, which means he hasn’t been able to see Gok much during the pandemic. “He came back a couple of times and we had socially distanced get togethers at the front of my

Marinated chicken skewers recipe SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
340g chicken breast, cut into 3cm cubes
1. If you are using wooden or bamboo skewers, soak them in water for at least one hour before using.
80ml honey 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped or grated Juice of 1 lemon
2. Put all of the ingredients into a large bowl and mix well, making sure the chicken is well coated. Cover and allow to marinate for at least two hours.
250ml light soy sauce 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Thread three cubes of chicken on to each skewer, then place on a foil-lined baking tray. I’d recommend two skewers per person. Once all of the chicken has been threaded on to your skewers, spoon over the remaining marinade. 4. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes, basting and turning the skewers every 15 minutes. 5. Once you are happy that the chicken is cooked through, transfer to a serving plate. These are best eaten warm but are also tasty as a cold snack or filling for baguettes, wraps or pittas. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra — one of the UK’s leading orchestras — continues its series of symphonic concerts performed and broadcast live from its home venue, Lighthouse, Poole. Chief Conductor Kirill Karabits leads the Orchestra in this Easter concert which showcases Penderecki’s Prelude for Peace, a piece which distills the composer’s childhood memories from the period of German occupation and communist regime that came to dominate Poland after the war— ultimately culminating in a feeling of peace and hope. Meanwhile Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross was commissioned in 1783 for the Good Friday service at the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva, Cádiz. It features a sequence of seven slow, prayerful, meditative sonatas which reflect the seven last short sentences uttered by Christ from the Cross.
