T H E B R I T I S H M O T O R YA C H T S H O W CONFIRMED FOR JUNE 2021 Premier Marinas is delighted to announce that the prestigious British Motor Yacht Show 2021 will take place at its flagship marina at Swanwick on the Hamble River. Now in its 8th year, the show will extend to nine days from Saturday 12th June to Sunday 20th June 2021; giving everyone the opportunity to view the boats they want to see in a relax and socially distanced environment. This will be the second British Motor Yacht Show to run under pandemic conditions: in August 2020 the British Motor Yacht Show was the UK’s only high profile boat show to proceed. The success of the show was largely due to the generous pontoon layout at Swanwick, the organiser’s strict adherence to COVID-19 regulations and their approach to ‘by a private appointment only’ viewings for attendees.

Backed by top British luxury motor yacht brands Fairline, Sunseeker and Princess, and hosted by Premier the UK’s leading marina group, the 2021 show will feature a stunning line up of motor yachts from British brands – including new for this year Pearl - plus a selection of prestigious exhibits chosen by the organisers from the best motor yacht manufacturers in the world.

Their Wellbeing Welcome for new residents is a bespoke 14-day settling in programme, exploring the likes and dislikes, personal routines and preferences as well as providing a variety of activities. Members of the Cinnamon team including the manager, care and hospitality teams, activity co-ordinator and chef will also spend time getting to know you so that they can personalise all aspect of the care they provide. New residents can nominate one designated visitor who will be able to visit for up to two hours per day for the first 14 days.

Alongside the in-water displays there will be boats ashore to view and with the by appoint only system in place, this will be a ‘must visit’ for serious buyers who appreciate the private time to view each vessel in an atmosphere where unhurried conversations can take place with the various dealers.

Netley Court residents can now nominate one dedicated person who can visit regularly inside the home. This will require the visitor to be tested with a Lateral Flow test prior to visiting. In addition outdoor visits and visits to a dedicated visiting room where the resident and one visitor separated by a substantial screen, can happen without the need for Lateral Flow testing.

Do unmarried couples need a will? BY KATHRYN LOVELAND-BLOCKLEY, PRIVATE CLIENT EXECUTIVE, DUTTON GREGORY According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), the number of cohabiting couples in the UK reached five million in 2020. However, without the proper forethought, many of these couples find themselves dealing with complicated legal battles when their partner has passed. In England and Wales, there is a widely held misconception about the rights of a “common-law spouse” – where you live together without getting married. Unmarried couples don’t have an automatic legal right to inherit from each other. The only way to ensure your partner doesn’t lose out is to write a will. When drafting a will for unmarried couples, it is essential to know what assets they own and how they are held. If they do not have a will, assets in the deceased’s sole name will pass under the rules of intestacy. These intestacy rules determine how the estate of someone who dies without a will is distributed. This is decided by how you are connected (e.g. the deceased’s child/grandchild) and doesn’t take into account the closeness of their relationships or who needs it most. This can mean assets transferring to people that the deceased had not intended, but also can leave the surviving partner with nothing. Therefore creating a will can provide security, not just for the surviving partner but, in some cases, for children too. As an example, if the deceased owned a property as a joint tenant with their partner (i.e. they equally own it together), the property would be passed onto the surviving partner. However, what if the deceased has children that are not the surviving partners? What inheritance will they receive of the property? On the surviving partner’s death, the property will pass under the terms of their will or the rules of intestacy if they do not have a will. This would then mean that the children of the deceased partner could lose out.

Another benefit of making a will with a law firm, such as Dutton Gregory, is that we can try and mitigate inheritance tax. Although we do not know what the tax rules will be in the future, or what the value of your estate will be, we can write a will based on your current circumstances and the current regulations. However, if wills are not drafted, or are drafted incorrectly, you could face an inheritance tax liability that you had not planned for. It is also important to note that a will you make as an unmarried couple will be automatically revoked by a later marriage or civil partnership. The only exception is if that the will was made ‘in contemplation’ of marriage, which we can cover with a clause in the will. Writing a will, especially for unmarried couples, ensures your family are provided for and that your wishes are correctly in place and understood after your passing. Pot some plants Scattering leafy green plants around your home can fill a lifeless rented pad with the kind of positive feng shui energy we all need right now. Studies have found that plants can help to reduce stress levels while you’re working from home – plus, some varieties naturally purify the air around you. If you’re new to the world of gardening, we recommend looking at aloe vera, English ivy and snake plants; three hardy varieties that are fairly low-maintenance and easy to care for. Get some one-off furniture Nothing screams ‘rented flat’ more than popular IKEA furniture. From Lack tables and Billy bookcases to Malm dressers, flatpack furniture has a time and place, but it’s often a staple of rented flats. Updating your furniture is a good way to change your space, and you don’t have to break to bank to get some unique pieces either. Online marketplaces like Ebay (ebay.co.uk) and Shpock (shpock.com) are a great place to look for cheap vintage items, and Gumtree has furniture going for rock-bottom prices too. If you’re really tight on cash, you could also try Freecycle (freecycle. org), a grassroots movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Photo frames add a personal touch Whether its an unloved hallway or a living room that needs some cheer, a few photo frames with pictures of friends and family can make your house feel a lot more welcoming. THE DEBT RESPITE S C H E M E – 4 T H M AY 2 0 2 1 The pandemic has had a huge impact on people on their finances and their mental health. The Government have looked at this and are introducing from the 4th May 2021 ‘The Debt Respite Scheme’. The respite is 60 days breathing space to help sort out the debts that have accumulated. The condition of this is you must sign up with a debt advise provider authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). If you have a tenant who has fallen behind in their rent and is struggling to keep up with their arrears, then this may help them. As a landlord you will not be able to contact them about their arrears or serve any notices during the 60 days. They must provide proof of the debt advisor and the tenant must have been accepted under the scheme. You can of course still contact them for other things such as Gas Safety Certificates.

Pyrus communis (pear cultivars) (Pictured right) We have a splendid Conference pear tree in our famous rose garden at Mottisfont which must be at least 70 years old. Its delicate pinkish-white blossom provides a feast for early solitary bumblebees and other insects, and in autumn the tree provides rich, juicy fruit. The beauty of this specimen lies in its age – a reminder that it’s worth keeping fruit trees for as long as possible. The gnarled trunk and open twisted branches from years of pruning give it a magnificent shape. A beautiful tapestry of green and grey-blue lichen and moss cover the older branches, and the cracks in its weathered bark

It’s a haven for a diverse range of wildlife throughout the year. Planted beneath the tree is a beautiful old shrub moss rose, rosa ‘William Lobb’. Each year we loosely tie its new leggy stems into the lower branches of the pear – an additional fragrant magenta delight for our summer visitors.

Prunus ‘Kanzan’ (cherry ‘Kanzan’) (Pictured left) The Kanzan cherry is one of the showiest varieties we grow in the orchard at Hinton Ampner, displaying delicious double lilac-pink flowers in late April. When the petals start to fade and drop, they flutter across the lawns here like spring confetti. Kanzan is a strong-growing, medium sized tree which is tolerant of a variety of soils, so it’s a good choice for many gardens. There’s another round of colour in autumn, when the leaves take on a fiery-red glow.

Requiring only basic tree husbandry with little or no pruning, this fully hardy tree, native to eastern Asia, is perfect for all garden lovers. It can also be used in orchards as a pollinator tree.

Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree) (Pictured below) I really look forward to this flowering in May – unusually, the deep pink blossoms erupt straight from the main stem and branches which gives added ‘wow’ factor. These are followed by pea-like fruits which are most obvious in late summer/early autumn. It’s a reliable performer and not a shy flowerer. It’s fairly easy to obtain and grow and can happily be pruned to shape. Plant it

Some of these can be found in traditional orchard settings. Over 90% of Britain’s heritage orchards have been lost, but the National Trust now protects more than 25 in the South East alone. They provide a valuable lifeline for insects including pollinating bees and butterflies, and are an uplifting spectacle in spring, and again in autumn when they are bursting with fruit. The Sportivo Special Edition comes in two distinct and highly equipped variants, ‘Sportivo’ and ‘Sportivo X’. Both trim levels are exclusive to Maserati’s two most soughtafter models, Levante V6 350HP and the recently introduced Ghibli Hybrid 330HP. Well-equipped as standard, the Levante SUV and Ghibli both gain special alloy wheels and the Nerissimo styling pack. In addition both versions have full-LED adaptive Matrix headlights. As befits a car of Maserati’s pedigree and price the standard specification list is very extensive as standard and even more so on these special editions. Prices start for the Levante V6 Sportivo Special Edition at £69,975 and the Sportivo X Special Edition at £80,800. The Ghibli Sportivo Special Edition costs £64,200 and the Sportivo X Special Edition £72,950.

R O A D T E S T: T O Y O TA R AV4 H A S A PREMIUM FEEL Although to most of us £30k seems a lot of money for a car, it’s no longer the preserve of prestige models, there are more than a few top-end ‘ordinary’ models that tip the financial scales at £30k, and some more like £35k. A case in point is Toyota’s RAV4. Their longstanding SUV (or Recreational Activity Vehicle) has been a feature of the price lists since 1994. Its present incarnation is a world away from that first model, as you would expect given it’s over 25 years since the original was launched. Five trim levels with the option of allwheel-drive on four of them and a single petrol 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine. Prices start from £31,090 with a good level of standard equipment including auto lights, wipers and mirrors which are powered, heated and auto folding. There’s cruise control, reversing camera, reclining rear seats and Apple Car Play/Android Auto along with DAB and B luetooth. All the RAV4s are a mix of that 2.5 litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with electric

assistance, both plug-in and non-plug-in. In standard hybrid form i.e. non-plug-in you can choose between all electric or hybrid and the reassurance of knowing that there’s a petrol engine to take away any range anxiety. In non-plug-in hybrid form you won’t go very far on pure electric so it’s probably better to leave the car to decide. My test model was the mid-range Excel in 2-wheel-drive form, non-plug-in hybrid and priced at £35,375. It’s noticeable from the moment you slide behind the wheel there’s a quality feel with tactile materials and a refinement that could easily see the RAV4 carry a much more premium badge. Standard fare includes all the aforementioned items as well as heated

leather seats and steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, satellite navigation and adaptive cruise control in a very decent equipment list. On the road there’s a decent amount of power and the CVT works well with little of the racing engine revs you sometimes get with this kind of automatic box, unless you floor the throttle of course when it becomes all too obvious. The ride quality over the worst surfaces is a little fidgety but the larger wheels on the Excel don’t help, but it’s something that certainly won’t concern most people. It’s a smooth and refined drive with a superb driving position, excellent fuel economy and plenty of space for passengers and luggage.

R E N A U LT 5 PROTOT Y PE: T H E R E B I R T H O F A C U LT CAR, MORE MODERN THAN EVER? As with many historic car brands the soul of Renault is firmly in its roots, and the company’s latest design is inspired by the iconic cult model from Renault’s past, the R5. This very modern Renault 5 prototype looks terrific and is a compact city car which takes one of Renault’s timeless successes and gives it a 100 per cent electric twist. It is very reminiscent the original design and is immediately recognisable, but is suitably futuristic to give it a 21st century look. Additionally, the styling elements taken from the original design hide some of the more modern features, for example: the bonnet air intake hides the charging hatch,

However, there are a few cars that can genuinely claim to be iconic and the Fiat 500 is certainly one of them. In its modern incarnation, like BMW’s MINI, it is heritage reborn and continues to be a huge success for Fiat. It is hard to believe it has been around since 2008 and in Abarth form is a particularly fun drive. It’s not especially fast but really emphasises that cars don’t need to be fast to be fun. Priced from £17,760 the Abarth 595 line-up is all powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels through either a manual or CVT automatic gearbox. There’s a firm but still comfortable ride with the benefit of confident cornering across more twisting roads. The engine is in various states of tune from 145 hp to 180 hp.

The limited edition run is just 2,000 and it certainly looks distinctive with black paintwork, gold detailing wheels. Priced at £22,345 the 165 hp Scorpioneoro offers standard fare such as navigation, Bluetooth, climate, power mirrors, automatic lights, rear parking sensors,

special Scorpioneoro carpet floor mats and headrest stitching plus a numbered plaque. Where the 595 shows its age is on items such as seating which offers little adjustment, a steering wheel only adjustable for height not reach and a design that means the interior is cosy. What seat height adjustment there is comes via a lever adjacent the handbrake – not ideal – because the door side of the seats are so close it is not possible to fit it on that side. That said this is a car that was originally launched back in 2008. Apart from looking the part the Abarth sounds gorgeous at tickover, not in a broken exhaust kind of way but there’s a lovely burble from the exhaust and once on the road pushing the revs the sounds continue to impress. It has such character compared to many modern cars and also broad appeal. My young supermarket delivery chap went into verbal overdrive when he saw it. This was one I was VERY sorry to hand back.

Chef Theo Randall: I haven’t got an Italian bone in my body, but I have an Italian soul Theo Randall talks to Prudence Wade about his lifelong ‘obsession’ with the Italian approach to food.

With pizza, pasta and cheese galore, it’s hard not to like Italian food. But few people love it quite as much as chef Theo Randall. Randall – who runs Theo Randall at the InterContinental in London – admits to having a “lifelong obsession with Italian food”. It stemmed from childhood holidays there, and an artist mother who was “mad about Italian”, he says. “When we were kids, we grew up on her cooking from lots of Italian cookbooks.” The London-born chef gets almost mistyeyed when talking about past meals in Italy – particularly the first time he tasted spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams). He has a particular obsession with the Italian deli, confessing he’s “an obsessive shopper – I will go to a particular shop to buy one item, and I’ll probably buy three different jars of passata”, who often comes home laden with anchovies, olive oil and as much cured meat as he can carry. “I would say I haven’t got an Italian bone in my body, but I have an Italian soul,” Randall muses – and he suggests we could all learn a lot about the country’s approach to food. “It’s about keeping things really simple and not overeating,” he explains. “Less is more – sometimes a really delicious plate of pasta is all you need, or maybe it’s a baked dish or a risotto – if that’s done really, really well, it doesn’t have to have 25 ingredients in it. It could just be courgettes, butter, parmesan and some fresh basil.”

Melanzane parmigiana

SERVES 4

1. Place a heavy-based saucepan over a medium heat. When hot, add three tablespoons of the olive oil and the garlic and fry for about 30 seconds, until the garlic is soft but has no colour. Add four of the basil leaves and cook for 30 seconds, then add the passata, INGREDIENTS

Arrange a layer of cooked aubergines evenly in the bottom of the dish, spoon over one third of the tomato sauce, sprinkle over one third of the chopped mozzarella, and sprinkle over one third of the Parmesan. Repeat the layers twice more, finishing with the final layer of Parmesan. 5. Bake the parmigiana for 35 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy (give it up to another 10 minutes, if you need to).

Paccheri recipe with prawn, courgette & parsley sauce SERVES 4 AS A STARTER

1. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Add the paccheri and boil for two minutes INGREDIENTS

Tiramisu INGREDIENTS

SERVES 6

1. Add the sugar and egg yolks to the bowl of a stand mixer and beat on a medium speed

2. In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff, then fold them into the mascarpone mixture until fully combined, light and creamy.

3. Combine the coffee and Marsala in a shallow dish. One by one, dip one third of the savoiardi biscuits into the liquid and use them to line the bottom of a medium-sized, deep serving dish. 4. Using a spatula, spread one third of the mascarpone mixture on top to create an even layer. Repeat this layering process twice more. This brand-new service was introduced in response to the restrictions of COVID-19 and aims to offer patients with life-limiting illnesses a chance to really connect with each other and with the hospice’s clinical nursing team.

Increase resilience, gratitude and joy by exploring the 5 pathways to nature connectedness through photography. Classes consist of meditation, breath work, photography exercises and group discussion. If you know someone who usually struggles with mindfulness and meditation and would benefit from some stress reduction techniques, the use of photography as a medium makes the practice more accessible. Next 4-week course starts Weds 21st April 3-5pm, investment £139.

The Virtual Day Hospice will be via group and oneto-one video sessions, with spaces limited to allow maximum benefit for all participants. Sessions will be hosted by our Day Hospice staff with guest speakers and professionals attending during drop-in sessions. Patients will be part of a 10-week programme initially, which is subsequently reviewed to meet patient needs and offer the support required. There will also be dropin sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, between 2pm-3.30pm.

Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, is giving over its gallery space to an exciting new project that showcases creative local talent and celebrates the town. The COIN project – Celebrating the Old, Inspiring the New – is being run by The Power House (Poole) and will reopen the gallery to the public after 17 May, provided the conditions are still met for the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown. Submissions are invited now for thoughtful or playful work that flags up the vibrant creative community we live in. Lighthouse Chief Executive Elspeth McBain says: “The exhibition will run for a month and works on display may include painting, printing, photography, ceramics, textiles, videos, and encompass a complete mix of ideas. An additional programme of workshops, activities and poetry, dance and music sessions is currently being planned, and a key central feature of the display will be a community art project celebrating Hamworthy, led by the commissioned local company Co-Create.
