ENCORE CARE HOMES L AUNCHES 24/ 7 R API D RES P O N S E TE AM FO R O LD ER PEO PLE Encore Care Homes has launched the UK’s first care home Rapid Response Team (RRT) to help older people in a care crisis. The Rapid Response Team (RRT) at Encore Care Homes operates across Dorset and Hampshire 365 days a year to assist older people who urgently require permanent or respite care. A relative can call the RRT 24-hours a day, seven days a week, to arrange for one of the team’s Clinical Assessors to carry out a face-to-face or virtual assessment in a hospital or out in the community to discuss the best course of action. The RRT can arrange an admission into one of Encore’s homes, where necessary, within 24-hours of the initial call, depending on the person’s care needs. The RRT has already helped over 100 people who were experiencing a care emergency to access Encore’s care facilities which provide residential, nursing and dementia-dedicated care at Great Oaks in Bournemouth, Oakdale in Poole, Fairmile Grange in Christchurch, and Hamble Heights in Fareham. The RRT is a free

service for the community which aims to make the process of moving to a care home a simple and smooth one, alleviating the anxiety, uncertainty, and burden that comes with organising care for a relative. It is the brainchild of George Jenescu, a Registered Nurse who works as a Clinical Assessor at Encore who has seen first-hand the pressure that the NHS is under – to discharge patients and free up beds. Through Encore’s partnership with University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, George and his colleague, Sebastian Ouseph, act as a single point of contact between the hospitals and the patient’s relatives. They work with the local hospitals’ discharge teams, social services, and local care commissioning groups to facilitate access to a wide range of independent, assisted, and care home living services for older people.

MD Matthew Barker advised, “We are really pleased to be behind the progression of Bournemouth Rugby Club (BRFC), particularly after such a difficult period for everyone. I’m happy to be doing my bit to help this brilliant community rugby club fight hard for the next winning season. They are a thriving club working at the heart of the local communities which it serves. LO C A L B OY M A K E S A BIG SPL ASH FOR LO CAL H O S PI C E A 10-year-old boy from Poole, who swam the equivalent of English Channel to France and back by completing 5,634 lengths of his pool at home during lockdown, has delivered a cheque for £11,095.88 to Forest Holme Hospice. Fraser Burnet, a pupil at Dumpton School in Wimborne, originally swam 2817 lengths - the distance from England to France – during lockdown to raise money for the Poole-based hospice in memory of his Daddy and Grandpa. Fraser initially raised nearly £2,000 by swimming the equivalent distance to France but decided to carry on and swim back to England and try to raise more money for the Poole-based hospice. Fraser managed to raise over £3,000 and with the help of generous match-funding pledges from Teleost Cayman Ltd and Ancora Software, he smashed his £10,000 target and delivered a cheque for £11,095.88 to Dania Moussalli, a counsellor at Forest Holme, who helped Fraser and his family with bereavement support.

TV Presenter Kate Garraway has shared regular updates with the public about her husband Derek Draper’s journey since he contracted Covid-19 in March 2020. Last month, the documentary ‘Finding Derek’ aired, detailing how the family coped as Kate’s husband recovered from the effects of the virus. In the programme, Kate opened up about the financial impact of Derek’s illness and hospitalisation and the “financial mess” she found herself in. During the first few weeks of the illness, Derek had to be put into a medically induced coma and Kate was surprised to learn that she was unable to access Derek’s bank accounts or raise funds by refinancing their home. What you should know about ‘Cauda Equina Syndrome’ The collection of nerves at the end of the spinal cord is known as the ‘cauda equina’, due to its resemblance to a horses tail. Their primary function is to send and receive messages between the pelvic organs and the lower limbs. A result of these nerves being damaged can be Cauda Equina Syndrome - a condition which will, in most cases, be treated as a medical emergency because a delay in receiving the necessary surgical treatment could result in lasting damage such as incontinence and paralysis of the legs.

What causes Cauda Equina Syndrome?

An MRI scan is helpful for diagnosis. From the time at which symptoms begin to show, surgery should ideally occur within 48 hours to relieve the pressure being placed upon the nerves and maximise the likelihood of permanent damage being avoided.

There can be several potential causes, ranging from the most common being a ruptured lumbar disk, to complications from direct trauma such as a car crash. It is also possible it will occur as a result of a birth defect. What are the symptoms? People with back pain should be aware of the following “red ﬂags” that may indicate Cauda Equina Syndrome:1. Severe low back pain 2. Weakness, lack of feeling or pain in one or both legs

4. Bladder retention or incontinence. 5. Bowel incontinence. 6. Sexual dysfunction. What can be done?

Surgery may not be able to repair all damage however, especially if the symptoms have been showing for a while. The damage may be permanent by this point, in which case physical and emotional support will be required from sources such as therapists and carers. Failure to recognise the signiﬁcance of these ‘red ﬂag’ symptoms by a medical professional could be negligent.

Creating a flower meadow area is a wonderful way to attract more pollinators to your garden. Without bees, butterflies, wasps, flies and beetles we’d have no flowers, fruit and veg. The flowering grasses in a meadow provide shelter for wildlife and protect the soil from excess evaporation, and the insects in turn are food for countless birds and mammals. Where’s the best spot? A sunny, sheltered location is ideal. Many meadow plants originated in open areas and need the sunshine to flourish. Shelter will protect the delicate flowers from flopping over. An area as small as 2m x 2m will create both a pleasing display for you and food for pollinators. Where do I start? First you need to remove as much grass as you can – garden grass has been selectively bred to be a thug and will out-compete most meadow species. Remove as much of the topsoil as possible as meadow flowers aren’t suited to a rich environment and will cause weak, sappy growth. Turn over the remaining soil down to 20cm, level it and sow a meadow seed mix. The wildflower mix that works for you will spend on the climate and geology of where you live. Different flowers will thrive in a chalky soil to a clay or acidic one. The great thing about a meadow is that it’s cheap and easy to test and learn. Be prepared to water the soil in dry spells - if the seeds dry out whilst they are germinating, they won’t recover. Sound of birds in flight From the soothing symphony of a dawn chorus to the furious flapping of flocks cruising across the sky, birds are an inspiring soundtrack to our daily lives. Filled with salt marshes, sand dunes and twisty tidal creeks, North Norfolk is a paradise for birders and walkers; trips to RSPB Snettisham Nature Reserve are particularly recommended, when red knots beat their wings above the mud flats. Whatever help you need, though, you do have to keep pedalling – and if you find yourself at speed, the battery will cut out when you reach 15mph for safety reasons. “People who haven’t cycled since they were kids feel that childhood freedom again, the freedom you get when you learn to ride a bike,” Milner enthuses. For me, it feels like the helping hand in the back that I got from my dad to gain momentum when I first learned to ride a bike. I understand the purists’ view. Throughout the 24 miles we do on minor roads (it is not an off-road tour but the roads we travel on are very quiet), I don’t break a sweat, yet cover much more ground comfortably than I could have on a regular bike and appreciate the great outdoors more than I would have done had I been focused on getting up that next rolling hill. It is, after all, a holiday, not the Tour de France. We stop en route to just take in the natural beauty – fields of zingy yellow rape, the distinctive call of a skylark, the mesmeric weaving flight of a pair of swifts, the aroma of wild garlic. These are stand-still, unhurried moments to savour. Cycling around the perimeter of Highgrove you can’t see an awful lot because of the high wall and hedging surrounding the estate – the company can arrange a grounds tour but you need to book at least six months in advance – so we move on to the polo fields where Prince Charles and his sons William and Harry played, stopping every now and then while our guide shares snippets of history and points out local landmarks. On the cycle back, we stop at Hookshouse Pottery in Westonbirt. It’s a small place, not really big enough for a coach party, just right for a trio of bikes.

The genial potter, Christopher White, mentions that his wife, Lise, is about to open her garden up to the public as she does every year for the National Garden Scheme, raising money for health charities, and offers us a preview. It’s a cornucopia of horticultural excellence, a one-anda-half acre sensory treat with borders about to burst into flower, a woodland area and an impressive pond. If we’d been in a car we wouldn’t have seen it. But on a bike, be it an eBike or a regular cycle, there’s more chance of finding the nooks and crannies of country life and engaging with the community. “The best feeling,” Milner observes with a twinkle in his eye, “is when you get to overtake the road bikers in all their pro gear going up those hills.” I’ve learned to dismiss all those taunts from my children – and intend from now on just to sit back and enjoy the ride.

With lockdown restrictions easing, there’s likely to be a lot of entertaining going on in back gardens throughout summer. So, is your garden party-ready – where guests will be able to sit in comfort, savour the beautiful plants around them, and enjoy the atmosphere late into the night? Of course, your own home-grown cut flowers will always pretty up a table, while sprigs of lavender or other herbs could add a scented accent to your place settings. “All the research shows there’s a generation of gardeners, who have been exposed to the opportunity of getting outside, growing plants and experiencing the green world around them as a result of being locked-down,” says award-winning garden designer, Chris Beardshaw. “One of the ways to keep that focus going is to provide opportunities in our gardens for increased socialising and increased sharing in the garden. HYU NDAI IONIQ 5 OPEN FOR BUSINESS Hyundai’s new IONIQ 5 is priced from £36,995. The first car in the new Electric Vehicle-exclusive IONIQ sub-brand, and the first Hyundai built on a new dedicated electric vehicle platform. The IONIQ 5 is fully electric and uses eco-friendly materials, including those extracted from sugar cane, is able to charge from 10%-80% in just 18 minutes on a fast charger, accelerate from 0-62mph in as little as 5.2 seconds and travel up to 298 miles on a single charge. There is a choice of three battery and drive types; a 58 kWh rear wheel drive, a 73 kWh rear wheel drive, or a 73 kWh all-wheel drive. The Ioniq is offered in three specification levels, SE Connect, Premium, Ultimate. The range kicks off with the IONIQ 5 SE Connect 58kWh RWD at £36,995, and has a 12.3” LCD audio, visual and navigation system with DAB, Apple Car Play™ and Android Auto™, LCD drivers instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, rear view camera and smart navigation-based cruise control.

TH E G R E AT B RITI S H CAR J O U N R E Y Most of us can remember outings in the family car, even if you were in a household that didn’t have a car, they were seen in ever greater numbers on our roads from the 1960s onwards. While cars such as Ferrari, Bentley, Aston Martin and other luxury or rare marques have been cosseted and saved, many ordinary cars have not only faded from memory but from our roads too. When did you last see a Ford Cortina, or even an Austin Maestro? Many of these long-missed cars were not only family cars, but also British cars. It is this aspect that a new motoring attraction has its focus. The aptly named Great British Car Journey in Ambergate, Derbyshire is yet another attraction in the Derwent Valley World Heritage site and opened its doors in May. There are more than 130 cars, including about 30 that you can actually drive. It is the brainchild of Richard Usher, a businessman responsible for creating Auto

These were cars that were once on virtually every street in Britain and sold in their millions.” The seed was planted and Richard, together with four private investors, has amassed one of the largest privately owned collections of British designed and manufactured cars in the country. ROAD TEST: B MW M4 4 0 I XD RIVE BMW have long had coupes in their line-up, from their early pre-war beginnings with the 327/328 right up to the present day with the latest 4-Series Coupe. What was previously the 3-Series Coupe has morphed into the 4-Series, this sensibly leaves the 3-Series as a saloon or Tourer and the 4-series as the convertible, coupe and rather stylised gran coupe. Prices for the new 4-Series Coupe start from £40,465 for the petrol 184hp M Sport 420i. There’s a choice of both petrol and diesel 4-cylinder turbo power units, a 6-cylinder petrol along with all-wheel-drive, and every model features the same 8-speed sport steptronic automatic gearbox. The first thing that strikes you on all the latest BMWs, and the 4-Series is no exception, is that new grille. It has divided opinion more than Marmite! Irrespective of your thoughts it would be shame to let

That’s quite an achievement when you consider the power that this coupe bestows upon the driver.

Prices for the 440 start from £54,670 but as with most German cars tick a few options boxes and the price climbs, in this case by £8,100 for various add-on packs. There are some surprising standard omissions for a car of this price level, such as power seats and lumbar support.

Intelligent all-wheel-drive is standard and automatically directs power to the wheels that have grip, and it can direct up to 100% of available power to either axle. The ride comfort is very good and lacks the usual characteristic firmness one might

B U G AT T I ’ S M O S T BE AUTIFUL R ACER JOINS CONCOURS O F ELEGAN C E 202 1 The Concours of Elegance – famed for gathering the rarest cars ever created – will showcase one of the most beautiful racing cars in existence, the Bugatti Type 59, at Hampton Court Palace this year. Taking place from 3-5 September, the event is renowned as one of the top three concours d’elegance events in the world for the quality of cars it attracts; nowhere else in the UK can the public see such a high standard of rare historic vehicles.

R O A D T E S T: M G 3 MG was an iconic British car, but in terms of new models is now an iconic British badge. Taken from the ashes of the Rover Group the Chinese car maker SAIC didn’t have the easiest of starts but now produces a small range of cars and SUVs in petrol, hybrid and all-electric. The main models are SUVs, understandable given their popularity, and just two cars, one of which is the MG3 supermini. This 5-door hatchback is a smart and equipment laden model at, by today’s standards, a bargain price. The two models start from £12,300 with standard equipment including air conditioning, power windows, DAB sound system with Apple Car Play, Bluetooth, remote steering wheel controls, 8-inch colour touchscreen, hill hold and auto door locking. The higher trim version at £13,600 adds navigation, cruise control, parking sensors and sports seats. The Achilles heel of the MG3 is its engine, a 4-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol unit that is best described as old school technology. Mated to a manual 5-speed gearbox the combination is adequate but lacks sufficient power and at cruising speed you always find yourself going for a 6th gear that isn’t there. At 70mph the MG sits at around 3,200 rpm,

which makes things a tad busy where a more relaxed gearing pattern would help. The need to work the engine also doesn’t help the economy, my mainly local driving week saw a 39mpg average. On cross country roads the MG comes alive with decent steering and a slightly firm suspension set-up that keeps the car sitting quite flat through energetic cornering. The power is at the higher end of the engine’s rev range and with a nice gear change makes it a fun drive. The nearest equivalent Ford Fiesta will set you back an additional £4,695, that’s a substantial difference. Of course, the Fiesta will depreciate less, most likely prove more durable on the quality front and drive better. Keep the MG for a longer time though and allied to that cheaper price tag it makes for an appealing proposition. Despite some misgivings the MG is an endearing car, it handles well, is good fun and very well priced. It’s comfortable with a good driving position and for those on a budget the cheapest way to get a new car that is a bit different, to the normal mass of budget cars, and actually doesn’t look like a budget model.

However, SEAT has carved its own niche as the brand offering more for less and is arguably out styling some of VAG’s more illustrious badges. The Leon has sharp, sleek looks and prices start from a very reasonable £20,405 for the manual SE with a standard equipment that includes keyless start, rear parking sensors, air conditioning, metallic paint, LED headlights and 8-inch touchscreen media system.

The hybrid system starts on pure EV and can be a bit of a pain, thanks to excess digitalisation of the controls, to move it to hybrid if you are on a longer journey and want to save the battery power for an urban destination. Depending on your view a potential downside is VAG’s decision to go digital is a distinct lack of proper buttons. It makes for multiple outstretched finger movements where a button required just one. Admittedly, you would get used to the system but it’s another example of manufacturers moving to systems that don’t appear to have universal approval. V O LV O E L E C T R I C C40 REVEALED Volvo has officially opened order books for its C40 Recharge, the company’s latest fully electric model. When customers get a new C40 Recharge, it will come with a Care offer including items such as servicing, warranty, roadside assistance, as well as insurance and home charging options where available. The company will roll out several additional electric models in the coming years and aims for 50 per cent of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars by 2025. By 2030, it plans for every car it sells to be pure electric. The C40 Recharge has all the benefits of an SUV but with a lower and sleeker design. The rear of the C40 Recharge features a lower roof line, while the new front design introduces a new face for electric Volvos and includes headlights with state-of-theart pixel technology. The propulsion consists of twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged to 80 per cent capacity in about 40 minutes. It offers an anticipated range of around 261 miles which is expected to improve over time via over-the-air software updates. The C40 Recharge will go into production this autumn and will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge at the Volvo Cars manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium. First UK deliveries are expected in early 2022.

The Fiesta has been a staple of Ford’s sales lists for decades not to mention the nation’s garages and driveways. As the decades and fashion has moved on so too has the Fiesta. The initial rather boxy design has morphed into a larger, sleeker model that’s laden with tech that wasn’t even thought of when the Fiesta was first launched. The ST-Line is designed to offer the more sporting looks of the ST without the hardcore driving experience. The Fiesta range is priced from £16,385 and the STLine sits roughly mid-table in the line-up with the ST-Line Edition (from £19,585) and the X Edition (from £21,830). Standard fare on both models includes such things as rear parking sensors, powered, heated, folding door mirrors, auto lights and wipers, auto dimming mirrors, privacy glass, heated windscreen, navigation, cruise, air conditioning, keyless start, sports tuned suspension and ST-Line body styling and grey alloys. Fords have always handled well and the STLine is no exception, yet the three engine options, all 1.0-litre EcoBoost units, which range from 95 to 155 PS, with two options of mild hybrid electric power, certainly

don’t provide blistering performance. In top power mode the benchmark 62 mph is reached in a whisker under 9 seconds. However outright speed isn’t the point of the ST-Line, it’s one of those cars that very ably demonstrates fun doesn’t have to equate to speed. My 125 PS mild hybrid model proved great fun when on cross country routes with a few nice bends thrown in. The steering is sharp, the peppy performance and engine note add to the fun and the car is a joy to drive. If you want outright performance then go for the ST and you’ll give much more premium sports models a fright. If you want a decent turn of speed matched to a sensible ride then the ST-Line is hard to fault. The Fiesta has a smart and sophisticated look but there are signs of where the pennies have been saved inside the car. The plastics look and feel a little too bargain basement in places, the front door panels have cloth inserts, but the rear ones are all plastic, and the carpets are harsh and rather poor. However, it’s a relatively small price to pay for a car that provides a compelling blend of urban, long distance and fun all rolled into one rather neat automotive package.

Stir-fried beef recipe INGREDIENTS

250g boneless beef rump, sliced into bite-

1. Stir the marinade ingredients together in a bowl. Add the beef and mix in well with the marinade.

Wonton soup recipe INGREDIENTS

SERVES 4, OR 6 AS A SIDE

Start by making the wonton filling. Put all the ingredients, except the prawns, in a bowl and

A Bond Themed ‘Live & Let Dine’ Dinner show is taking place at Key West Restaurant on Bournemouth Pier on Friday 9th July. It’s described as a fully immersive dining show where you will be transported into a slapstick, cartoon style parody of James Bond. Featuring the much-loved characters in an adventuresome romp through the cliches of the movies adored by millions. Any fans of ‘Naked Gun’, ‘Aeroplane’ and ‘Austin Powers’ will love this! With 4 actors playing 15 characters; expect lots of laughs, LOADS of costume changes and buckle up for the smallest car chase in history! Throughout the summer a beautiful mini-meadow transforms the historic walled garden of National Trust property The Vyne near Basingstoke. Over 50 varieties of wildflower create a swathe of nodding red, blue, orange and white flowerheads, flooding the space with colour and movement.
