INTRODUCING HYBO2 HOUSE Autumn 2021 sees the ultimate forward thinking wellness space launch in Winchester. A state of the art clinic comprising the latest world class Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy alongside physiotherapy from London’s Harley Street, HybO2 House offers a range of pioneering treatments to help diminish pain, promote healing and enhance wellbeing. The clinic, founded by local entrepreneur Justin Holder, is home to superior quality Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chambers to treat clients for a wide range of ailments, conditions and complaints as well as to increase overall health, wellbeing and vitality.

A host of farmyard animals visited a care home to provide a fun, therapeutic activity for the residents to enjoy. The special event which featured a range of small and large farm animals was organised to mark World Animal Day at Great Oaks, on Duck Lane, in Bournemouth, which is part of the Encore Care Homes family. The care home’s residents gathered the home’s garden to get up close to the pens which held a Shetland pony, goats, sheep, rabbits, and a chicken. After scores of residents came outside to see the fluffy creatures, who had the opportunity to hold and stroke the animals, the chicken and a rabbit were brought inside the care home to visit the residents in the communal spaces and in their rooms.

Encore Care Homes is currently running a promotion for permanent bookings, which enables residential residents to receive two weeks of care for free to allow them to experience the facilities, home-cooked meals, and activities for themselves. Encore Care Homes is welcoming new residents to receive residential care, with tours of the homes available, which involve enhanced Covid-safe measures for the benefit of residents, visitors, and the team. As well as Great Oaks in Bournemouth, the Encore family includes Fairmile Grange in Christchurch, Oakdale in Poole, and Hamble Heights in Fareham. For more information about the care services available, go to Encorecarehomes. co.uk

The highly anticipated arrival of the premium space enables clients from Winchester, the neighbouring Home Counties and further afield to seek the pioneering treatment. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, often used by elite athletes, is a gentle and natural way to increase the level of oxygen in the body to stimulate cell growth and repair damage to cells and organs. For more information about HybO2 House and to access further resources and news regarding Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, see www.hybo2.com/ HYBO2

LIGHTHOUSE L AUNCHES ITS FIRST OPEN CALL C O M M I S S I O N TO SEEK NEW WORK Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, is making its first open call to support and develop new work for its Sherling Studio space. In recent years Lighthouse has awarded commissioning funds to artists and companies that it has worked with regularly including Dante or Die, Gecko, Gandini Juggling and Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company, but this is the first time Lighthouse has made an open call to support and develop new relationships. The award will go to an artist or company making work suitable to present in the Sherling Studio that can be programmed in 2022 or 2023. It is anticipated the commission will support bids for further funding and Lighthouse will also consider supporting the work with rehearsal space and discuss opportunities for hot-desking. The deadline for pitches is 30 November 2021. Further conversations with selected artists and companies will take place in December with a final decision made no later than mid-January. INSIDE OUT DORSET With more than 27,500 visitors in five stunning outdoor locations across the county, Inside Out Dorset has demonstrated just how much we have missed getting together and sharing cultural experiences.

“Inside Out Dorset has always been about presenting innovative and challenging art as a collective experience in extraordinary locations,” say Inside Out Dorset co-artistic directors Kate Wood and Bill Gee.

The biennial international arts festival, delayed from 2020 because of the pandemic, returned in September with a rich and varied programme of free to attend art installations and performances in extraordinary locations. Hosted by Dorchester-based outdoor arts producer Activate over two weekends from 17 to 26 September, the festival presented 104 performances featuring 24 UK and international artists alongside opportunities to join in for 1,280 participants.

With street performances of outdoor circus and dance in Poole and Christchurch, the festival was brought to a spectacular finale in Weymouth where people came out in their droves to witness two performances of the promenade show Sense of Unity featuring the UK-based Worldbeaters drumming team and the mesmerising giant puppets of Dundu, from Germany. Thousands flooded the streets to watch the story unfold and reach its climax in front of the Jubilee Clock.

The ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’: What you need to know about helping your child financially Are you considering offering your child financial assistance to help them get onto the property ladder? Alistair MacFarlane, Partner at Dutton Gregory Solicitors, reveals how you can provide the financial support your children may need and if it is a good idea. What are we talking about when we refer to the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’? We’re referring to the receiving of money from parents or a family member. Increasingly young people, particularly first-time buyers, are turning to loved ones and using family loans when buying a home or putting down a deposit. This can help lower monthly repayments and interest rates. Why are more people turning to family members for financial support? Rises in house prices and living costs are making it harder for young people to save for their first home. The ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ has never been busier, with a 2018 report by Legal & General estimating that one of four housing transactions made that year depended on contributions made by family members. How can you provide financial assistance to a family member? There are several ways you help a loved one financially. You can gift them the money, loan it to them or set up a joint investment. It’s best to seek professional advice to help decide which is the best option for you.

Alistair Macfarlane Partner

Gifting the money is the simplest choice, but can come with the greatest risk, as you have no say in how the money is used. If you decide to loan them the money, a solicitor such as myself can help you establish conditions to protect your assets, and offer tax-planning advice. You can also agree on how they will repay the personal loan they borrow.

If your child is in a relationship, contemplate asking them to sign a Cohabitation or Prenuptial Agreement before they receive the money. This can help ensure it will be spent wisely and is protected in the event of a divorce or separation.

With expert guidance, a joint investment is easy to set up and is a great way for you to help your child buy a home and invest in your family’s future. If the property is sold, you could use the return to help boost your pension savings.

It’s also best to speak with your intended lender beforehand, as some banks may not be comfortable approving a mortgage loan that’s been heavily funded by other family members.

You may also decide to set up a Trust that uses money from your estate, which may have tax planning advantages.

I can provide bespoke legal advice, explain your options, make you aware of any relevant tax considerations and put protections in place, so you can provide the financial support that your child needs.

What will I need to consider before agreeing to provide any money? First, decide how much money you want to pay them. This will depend on what you can afford, why the money is needed and possibly how many other children you have. I always recommend that you should treat each child fairly, and offer them all the same amount.

There’s a lot that goes into your bathroom before you do. At Ripples, we work slightly differently from others. Our talented bathroom designers try to get to know you first. They chat with you about what you like and what you don’t like. They go over your ideas, your torn out pages from magazines, your Pinterest boards - whatever it is that inspires you. Before we do anything, we find out exactly what you’re looking for, and then we make sure as much of you goes into our ideas as possible. We don’t do one size

fits all solutions, but we do take dreams and ideas and turn them into bespoke designs for your new bathroom. From the moment you step into our showroom to the moment you step into your new bath, we make the whole process as smooth and stress-free as it can be. It’s the Ripples effect. Let’s have a chat about what we can do for you.

Where should you be heading on your first trip back to the USA? With 50 states to choose from, there’s a dizzying choice of American holidays, says Sarah Marshall. It’s been a long time coming, but news vaccinated travellers will be able to enter the US from the UK and EU from November* onwards has been met with applause. A firm favourite with travellers, it’s likely to be a popular holiday option for the winter season and 2022. Already, many operators have received an influx of bookings. “Arguably the most well-known country on earth, the USA is abundant with once-in-a-lifetime sights, from sweeping landscapes to cosmopolitan cities,” says Kerry Golds, MD of A&K and Cox & Kings. “We’ve seen a boost in enquiries overall with vaccine confidence, but one country that stands out is the USA for travel later in the year.” If you’re seeking inspiration, here are a few trips to consider. Celebrate the heritage of the Capital Region In November, America’s oldest national museum, the Arts & Industries Building, will reopen for the first time in 20 years for the Smithsonian Institution’s 175th Anniversary. New exhibition FUTURES will feature more than 150 objects, ideas and installations that fuse art, technology, design and history. But don’t spend all your time indoors. Shenandoah National Park is ablaze with autumn colours at this time of year. HOW: Bon Voyage (bon-voyage.co.uk; 0800 316 0194) offers a new seven-night trip from £1,255 per person (two sharing), including stays in Washington DC, Charlottesville, Virginia and Annapolis, Maryland. The price covers accommodation, flights and car hire. Valid for travel November 1 to December 17.

See Yellowstone from above Next year celebrates the 150th anniversary of one of America’s greatest national parks, which was established in 1872. Popular with hikers during the summer, Yellowstone’s two-million-acre landscape is also captivating in winter months, when wolves can occasionally be seen hunting bison. Appreciate the scale and size of the place on an air safari, also visiting Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. Track bison and bears, explore with private guides and visit rarely seen corners of the popular parks. HOW: Abercrombie & Kent (abercrombiekent.co.uk; 01242 386 500) can tailor-make an air safari. POA, dependent on group size and aircraft.

Ski into the future in Aspen Snowmass Aspen Snowmass celebrates 75 years of skiing and riding this winter season, when ski lifts open on November 25. Along with covering the heritage and history of skiing in Aspen, celebrations and events will also look at innovation in ski racing, sustainability, art and athletic achievement. HOW:

Cruise California’s Golden Coast With a coastline of exciting cities, sun-kissed beaches, world-class wineries and soaring redwood forests, California’s iconic Pacific coastline is popular at any time of year. Named ‘The Golden State’ after the 19thcentury gold rush, it still has plenty of treasures to share. Sample fine vintages in Sonoma and Napa Valley, cycle across San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, and follow in the footsteps of showbiz greats on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. HOW: Cox & Kings (coxandkings.co.uk; 020 3918 3948) offers a nine-night California’s Golden Coast escorted trip from £3,295 per person (two sharing), including flights and some meals. Get on track in Utah In August, the famous Rocky Mountaineer began a new two-day rail route through the American Rockies between Denver in Colorado and Moab in Utah, travelling along the Colorado River. Brits visiting in November will be amongst some of the first people to experience the epic route through striking mountains and steep rock canyons – some only accessible by road or river. Admire the scenery from glass-dome coaches and enjoy regional cuisine. Fewer domestic tourists at this time of year will also make it much easier to access national parks. HOW: American Sky (americansky.co.uk; 01342 331 798) offers a 14-day Self-Drive Utah Mighty Five + Rockies to the Red Rocks by Rail itinerary, which travels onwards from Moab to explore Utah’s spectacular national parks. Prices from £2,849 per person (two sharing), including room-only accommodation, car hire and flights. Words by Sarah Marshall, PA *Restrictions may vary from the time of publishing.

LIFEST YLE | THE GOLDMAN JEWELLERS GROUP

The Goldman Jewellers Group;

Where unique doesn’t have to be expensive As the nights draw in, the air gets cooler and the leaves start to fall we find ourselves dreaming of cosy Christmas scenes; of roaring fires, a room full of friends and family raising glasses of fizz, and the perfect Christmas gifts chosen with care for a loved one, presented in luxurious wrapping. One

Christmas

gift

that

will

never

disappoint is the gift of jewellery. Whether it is a timeless classic piece, something more contemporary, a watch, gem set jewellery or diamonds to signify a special occasion or just because you want to show someone how much you care, jewellery is that traditional gift that will not only last but often be admired and always hold memories. A new ITV daytime series ‘BLING’ puts a really interesting perspective on how people buy and view jewellery, the emotional links that it can hold to family heritage and the sentiment we put into buying jewellery for a loved one. This lifestyle show, hosted by Gok Wan, invites customers to ‘buy, sell, fix or make’ jewellery. This fascinating show sees people investing in new and bespoke jewellery pieces or mending or remodelling family heirlooms. It brings to life the reality that jewellery is actually one of the most important purchases that will last a lifetime. Whilst this programme may look like a new concept, it is actually a service that traditional

have

offered

for

hundreds of years, in fact jewellery is the

basic design principles for creating a beautiful modern home Design guru Matt Gibberd tells Lisa Salmon that using space, light, materials, nature and decoration cleverly will help make a home gorgeous. Having a beautiful home has never felt more important than during the past 18 months when we’ve been forced to spend more time inside our own four walls – and you may have longed to transform yours into a beautiful modern living space. But if a lack of know-how or limited finances held you back, it’s not too late to get started. For design guru Matt Gibberd insists it can be easy to create a gorgeous home without spending a fortune, just by implementing five simple design principles. If you ask me, a Palladian villa, for example, has the same sensibility as a masterpiece of the modernist era, and has been designed according to the same set of timeless principles,” he says. “A simple way to think of these principles is to distil them into five categories – space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Paying careful consideration to each of these will allow you to create a home that’s beautiful, supportive and inspiring, regardless of scale or budget.” Gibberd, who is a founding director of the design-led estate agency The Modern House, has just written the book A Modern Way to Live, in which he outlines the five principles and how to best use them to create a beautiful home. Here he gives us a taste of exactly how to do it…

SPACE Gibberd explains that when a home combines both space and “refuge” areas it can help make occupants feel settled. He suggests: “Try to create an open and bright space for socialising, and a womb-like space for retreating and sleeping. Even in a studio flat, creating different zones using a curtain, sliding partition or bookcase on castors can greatly enhance the experience of occupying the space.” You can create the illusion of space with mirrors and reflective surfaces, he says, by using natural niches for built-in cupboards, and continuing the same material from inside to out. Consider re-hanging doors the other way around to open up rooms, and place radiators beneath windows to free-up valuable wall space for furniture. And don’t forget the kitchen! Gibberd advises homeowners to think of the kitchen as a collection of pieces of furniture rather than a set of units, and to avoid wall cupboards if possible, as the space above them becomes redundant. And instead of a freestanding fridge-freezer, consider a pair of under-counter refrigerators side-by-side.

61

INTERIORS | DESIGN PRINCIPLES

And then there’s the bin… “A free-standing dustbin hangs around the kitchen like a foul-smelling Dalek, tripping people up and overflowing with the remains of yesterday’s dinner,” declares Gibberd. “Try to build in the rubbish solutions – the space beneath the sink is always a useful spot for food waste, for example.” LIGHT Gibberd says it’s better to consider fixed glazing with a conventional door alongside, rather than bifold doors. “A picture window – free of obtrusive handles and mechanisms – does a better job of framing the views and looks more beautiful because the structural supports are hidden,” he explains. He suggests avoiding Roman blinds and pelmets, and hanging curtains from extra-wide poles so they can be pulled back to reveal the full window. And think about how the light moves around your home. “Sitting areas benefit from the enhanced light of a south-facing Elliot Sheppard/PA

window,” explains Gibberd, “whereas parts of the home that are seldom used, such as utility rooms, are best placed on the northern side. The eastern side is ideal for sleeping, and dining spaces work well on the western side, where they capture the radiant embers of the day.”

If your home has more than one level, he suggests thinking about inverting the layout. “You might never get used to the idea of declaring ‘I’m going downstairs to bed’,” he admits, “but in most other respects it makes a lot of sense, unlocking the light and views for the living spaces, and using the naturally darker areas lower down the building for sleeping.” But although light is crucial for a home, Gibberd says householders shouldn’t be afraid of the dark either. “Without areas of contrast, our homes would be onedimensional and monotonous,” he explains. “If you walk down a shadowy corridor, for example, when you arrive at a sun-soaked space it feels all the more bright and uplifting.” And on a brighter note, Gibberd says that if you can look straight into the filament of a lightbulb then it’s probably Elliot Sheppard/PA

in the wrong place. “Shun ceiling lights in favour of task

DECORATION Instead of fitted carpets, Gibberd suggests trying looselaid natural floor coverings such as sisal and jute, with a gap between the edging and the wall. Use rugs in layers and let them fill the natural spaces between furniture. And to avoid making an interior feel one-dimensional, he says it can be a good idea to mix furniture and objects from different eras and places. “Rather than putting a set of matching chairs around the kitchen table, for example, throw a bench or a wobbly Windsor chair into the mix,” he suggests. “Surround yourself with the objects that have the most meaning to you personally and tell the story of your life – family heirlooms, or things that remind you of a

particular holiday or experience.”

Group furniture and objects together in odd numbers, he says, explaining: “If things are arranged asymmetrically, the eye is forced to move around them to fully absorb what it sees.” And you may need to rethink the way your pictures are hung, he warns. “The most common mistake is to place them too high,” he points out. “My advice is to use your eye to find what feels like the right place instinctively, then take it down by six inches.” And finally, he adds: “When choosing what to buy for your home, try to follow your instincts rather than any preconceived notions about what constitutes good taste. Many of the best things have not been celebrated on Instagram, can’t be found in textbooks, and don’t cost a great deal. Often they have an accidental beauty that’s the result of fulfilling utilitarian needs.” A Modern Way to Live by Matt Gibberd is published on

Celebrate a sparkling Christmas Our Hampshire places offer the perfect escape for a festive day out with plenty of sparkle. Houses are richly decorated with twinkling lights, winter greenery, and Christmas trees. You’ll find shops full of traditional and contemporary gifts for all ages, including ranges created exclusively for the National Trust. Cafes are serving new winter menus, featuring warming treats that include ingredients from our own kitchen gardens and local producers. This year, we’re also inviting families to step into the wonderful world of Percy the Park Keeper, at Mottisfont and The Vyne. In association with the best-selling author and illustrator Nick Butterworth the Percy the Park Keeper winter wander introduces children to the busy park keeper and his animal friends. Running from 4 December, the self-led trail invites families to join Percy’s team as he races to get National Trust places and the animals that call them home ready for winter. After reading Percy’s handwritten note and donning his famous hat kids will follow clues, find Percy’s missing equipment, and enjoy activities and games that will bring them closer to nature this winter. Trail activities are different at each location. At the end of the trail families can celebrate with a photo-op with Percy, plus they’ll get a special prize too. Rockford, Ringwood A lovingly restored Grade II period farmhouse, situated in a stunning rural location with far reaching views of this beautiful area of the New Forest. Is Germany the best place to visit for an eco-friendly city break? On a trip to Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven, Gemma Bradley finds all the right ingredients for a green escape. Climate change has increasingly become one of the biggest topics of concern for leaders worldwide, but Germany is among the few countries making strides to ensure that sustainability is simply par for the course. Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven are all on the path to becoming sustainable cities, with cycling paths in abundance and public transport links that are some of the best in the world. There couldn’t be better options for environmentally-friendly urban breaks.

Restaurant Strom, located in the hotel, also offers a huge array of sustainable meals, locally sourced where possible. Right next door to the hotel is the Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost (climate house), an interactive museum that brings visitors on a journey through the world along the eighth longitude, experiencing each country’s climate zones up close, from freezing Antarctica to humid Cameroon. The Klimahaus also has a huge variety of animals native to each climate, from snakes and insects to electric eels, which can be seen up close throughout a guided tour.

Beautiful Bremerhaven My trip begins with a two-hour carpool ride in an electric Mercedes-Benz EQV from Hamburg airport to Bremerhaven, a small but fun-filled sustainable city, located next to the river Elba. Bremerhaven is home to the Atlantic Hotel Sail City, a fully ‘green hotel’ that prides itself on lowering its carbon footprint through rigorous food waste rules, where all food wastage is weighed daily to allow the hotel to continually monitor and limit losses. The 120-room hotel also has a cluster of beehives on its roof, home to 240,000 bees, and honey collected is used in the hotel.

Socially enterprising Bremen After a short transfer by tram to Bremen, we visit a Gemüsewerft, an urban gardening project and beer garden located on an old truck parking lot surrounded by building projects. The true uniqueness of this social non-profit company is its staff. The garden employs people with mental illnesses as well as mental and emotional disabilities to work alongside their own staff base, and gives them key customer facing roles within the business. Some have been here for 15 years and others simply stay for a few months, before going to other social care facilities. The company sees themselves as more of a ‘flagship’ store for food education, as they are too small to provide food for the whole community. They do, however, supply some local restaurants with fresh produce – including Canova Bremen, a high-end restaurant located in the city centre that operates on the key principles of being regional, sustainable, seasonal and fair to the environment. Bremen has more cycle paths than most other German towns, and the city borders are made up of green parks with a variety of cycle paths, rather than a physical wall.

Bright Skies, Dulux colour of the year From deluxe appliances to soft furnishings or a lick of paint, it’s easy to introduce this airy shade to your living spaces, says Sam Wylie-Harris. The benefits of blue are well storied, and now Dulux has named Bright Skies its Colour of the Year for 2022 – something we’re probably all craving more of right now! A versatile, uplifting shade that’s easy on the eye, this blue entices us with the promise of, well, something bright and beautiful. “Bright Skies is the perfect Colour of the Year for 2022 because it captures the essence of freedom we’ve all been craving for the past 12 months, while we stared out of the window,” says Marianne Shillingford, Dulux creative director. “After so long trapped indoors, we’ve come to appreciate the power of nature to uplift and revitalise us, and a clear blue summer sky is possibly the ultimate colour of nature. “This colour also melts the walls away to reconnect us with the great outdoors and makes small spaces feel much bigger. It’s perfect for a ceiling too, and anywhere in your home that needs a much needed injection of light and positivity. “Bright Skies pairs beautifully with all natural materials like wood and stone as well as subtle cool and warm neutrals,” adds Shillingford.

Destined to make a splash, Shillingford says the brand’s COTY – Colour of the Year – is always influenced by what’s happening around us, and to us. “We’re inspired by commonly shared experiences as much as emerging design trends, and seek to find synergy between the two. We’re also uplifted by the simplest pleasures that nature has to offer,” she explains. The latest addition to Stoves Colour Boutique line, Bright

Why you should loose the dead wood and switch to recycled plastic... The recent rise in wood prices has left people struggling to afford jobs or products which they previously believed were in budget, making us question if this is the best material to use. This is a great time to explore alternative options for your next project and consider not only the short term but also the long term benefits. Our products are made from recycled plastic, so immediately you will be using a resource which is helping towards the environment - taking waste plastic out of circulation and giving it a new purpose. The

material

is

strong,

and

weather resistant, and it will last over 50 years which means you won’t get a few years down the line and have to replace it, which is often the case with wood products as they can start to look old and tired. On top of that it is maintenance free, therfore you can save the effort spent on sanding and re-varnishing or painting the wooden counterparts.

If you compared this to soft wood for example, the average lifespan is between 5 to 10 years, not to mention if used on something like decking it will become naturally slippery and grimy before too long causing it to be a slip hazard – this means it will require regular maintenance, costing not only money but time too! The benefits of switching your choice of materials to our recycled plastic option are vast and well A S F E AT U R E D O N I T V ’ S “ LO V E Y O U R G A R D E N ” W I T H A L A N T I T C H M A R S H

OUTDOOR LIVING | HOMEMADE SEED BOMBS

Want to attract wildlife to your garden? Homemade seed bombs could be the answer. And you can get the kids to help!

As pollinating insects start to hunker down during the cooler months, gardeners can be doing their bit now to make sure they are welcomed into their garden during spring. Beneficial insects including bees and butterflies love the nectar that wildflowers provide – and with this in mind you could get your kids to help you make some seed bombs which will be a magnet for pollinators and provide lashings of colour next year. Garden expert and podcaster Michael Perry (aka Mr Plant Geek), explains: “Seed bombs – or Tsuchi Dango (‘earth dumplings’) as they were known in ancient Japan – are the perfect way for gardeners of all levels to get a head start on next year’s borders and pots. “The hard clay protects the precious seeds from harsh

winds and hungry wildlife, and together with the compost, provides them with all the nutrients they need to grow wild.”

Perry has devised a recipe using a mix of 11 wildflowers, including cowslips, musk mallow, cornflowers, poppies, chamomile and cranesbill geraniums, which will help provide a treasure trove of nectar rich sources for pollinating insects, in support of Rowse’s Hives for Lives (rowsehoney.co.uk/hives-for-lives) programme of vital initiatives to help care for bees. The wildflowers featured will all grow at different times, providing a dazzling display of colour throughout the summer. Here, Perry offers a step-by-step guide to seed bomb success. “Once you’ve made them, all you need to do is just

throw them and sow them,” he says.

ALL- N E W DAC IA J O G G ER Dacia is bringing its value-for-money approach to the 7-seater family car sector with the launch of the All-New Dacia Jogger. Adding to the brand’s model line up in the UK, of the Sandero, Sandero Stepway and Duster, the new Jogger offers the key attributes of the length and practicality of an estate car, the spaciousness of an MPV, and the styling and of an SUV. While the name may make you wonder Dacia say it embodies the brand’s outdoor spirit, its positive energy and sense of adventure! – Dacia’s reputation is such that you know this is going to be a player and offer excellent value for money.

The first post-war Continuation Series model, a 3.0-litre Graber Super Coupé from the Alvis Car Company, has been finished. After a two-year build, which was delayed by the pandemic, the completion of the brand-new Graber, destined for Japan, represents a major milestone for the company, which is set to ship at least five cars to customers there via Meiji Sangyo, Alvis’ Japanese distributor. The Graber Super Coupé is one of six models offered in the expanded Alvis’ Continuation Series with both pre and post-war derivatives. Each model is built to a bespoke specification with options such as air conditioning and all six have been developed from original drawings and feature an in-house designed and manufactured six-in-line 3-litre or 4.3-litre engine. This car draws on the new old stocks of chassis and engine blocks, carefully stored by Alvis since the Coventry factory closed in 1967. That’s when all the

At launch, the Jogger will be available with two engines, including the brand new TCe 110 turbocharged petrol engine and a LPG TCe 100 Bi-Fuel engine. Joining the range in 2023 will be Dacia’s first hybrid powertrain option. The All-New Dacia Jogger will be available to pre-order in the UK in November 2021, with first deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2022.

factory parts and racking were moved to Kenilworth where this Graber Super Coupé was assembled. Thanks to the addition of fuel injection, a higher compression ratio (9.5:1) and modern digital machining processes resulting in tighter tolerances, the engine produces 172bhp, up 42bhp from the 1960s’ version. Torque also rises to 209 ft / lbs @ 3750 rpm and it can achieve a 0-60 time of 8.9 seconds. With the Graber Super Coupé now roadtested and ready for shipment, focus shifts to the build of the first Continuation Series Graber Cabriolet, which is also set to be exported to the Far East in 2022 and in parallel, the first Lancefield pre-war 4.3 chassis car. Prices start at £295,000 for pre-war Continuation Series cars with the Graber Super Coupé starting at £323,000.

ROAD TEST: S UZU K I AC ROS S – PER FECT FU S I O N O F PE TRO L AN D ELECTRI C P OWER Suzuki may not have the clout of larger car makers but has always driven well above its automotive weight. A collaborative link with Toyota has produced Suzuki’s most expensive production car to date; the Across. Priced from £45,599 the Across is a considerable step up the price league by normal Suzuki standards, but does hold the prospect of some conquest sales. The Across is, with a few subtle tweaks, a RAV4 and in Suzuki form not only feels & drives very premium but is a proper 4x4. A single model hosts one of the best equipped SUVs with standard fare including such things as leather trim, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, dual zone air conditioning, electronic 4-wheel-drive, high beam assist, keyless entry and start, rear parking camera, reclining rear seats and much more.

modes offer the option of pure electric, automatic between hybrid and electric, hybrid and battery charge. There’s a claimed pure electric range of 46 miles, I managed 40 miles without any effort at conserving battery power so it’s a particularly impressive and commutable distance. The fusion between petrol and electric power is impressive too, with easilyselectable modes and an e-CVT automatic transmission that makes for smooth transitions without the usual raised engine revs. Add the self-charge button, which raises the engine revs somewhat, and there’s a surprisingly rapid recharge on

the move. Plug-in the Across and it’ll take around six hours to fully charge from a domestic wallbox. On the road the Across has a very premium feel helped by the smooth and refined progress. A large touchscreen still leaves buttons (hurrah!) for other functions and it’s all very intuitive. A conventional style automatic gear shift lever adds a touch of normality in a world where the standard rules of car conventionality seem to have disappeared. Many hybrids and electric vehicles have lost that conventional look and all too frequently for reasons of style rather than practical substance. There is plenty of space for passengers and their luggage, not to mention lots of cubby boxes and pockets for your in-car bits-andbobs. With subtle styling tweaks to the front design the Across is a suitably rugged looking SUV, as befits a proper off-road vehicle, and with a high specification more than lives up to the price tag.

Power comes from a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to 134kw electric motor providing hybrid power. Four driving

LOT U S C O N FI R M S F U L L S P E C I F I C AT I O N A N D P R I C E O F A L LNEW EMIR A V6 FIRST EDITION Lotus has confirmed the price and full specification of the all-new Emira V6 First Edition. The car, fully loaded with a host of technology, infotainment and comfort features plus unique badging, costs £75,995.

R O A D T E S T: H O N D A C R - V Honda’s CR-V began production in the mid-nineties and has proved a popular seller for those seeking a higher quality, large SUV. The Honda comes with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol unit that’s mated to a twin electric motor hybrid system that recharges on the move. The system automatically uses the most efficient drive whether electric, hybrid or engine. It’s a perfect compromise for those who see having to plug-in your hybrid or electric car as a bit of a faff. As one might expect from Honda the CR-V has a classy and quality feel throughout and feels like it will be on the road for decades to come. The CR-V will appeal to buyers who want sensible and spacious transport, and if that sounds a bit boring you would be wrong. True it’s not going to woo buyers of more sporty SUVs but it does feel special. It’s remarkably spacious and there’s plenty of room for the family to stretch out, not to mention stow all their luggage. It comes with good levels of standard equipment, even on the lead-in model, and includes auto lights and wipers, LED lights, intelligent adaptive cruise control, smart entry and start, climate and all the usual connectivity.

N OV E M B E R 2 1

The range starts from £31,470 and there are five trim levels with two and four-wheeldrive and just one 2.0-litre engine. As with most electric and hybrid vehicles the transmission system is automatic, however the Honda uses a single fixed-gear ratio creating a direct connection between moving components. While very smooth under hard acceleration – the 2WD version reaches 62 mph in 8.8 seconds so impressive for a low powered large car – it is noisy. This is in direct contrast to lower speed city driving and cruising when the CR-V is very quiet and refined. On the road it’s a genuinely nice drive and surprisingly nimble, the ergonomics are first class with a touch screen and instruments of excellent clarity. The transmission and drive modes – EV, Econ and Sport - are all switch operated rather than by levers and make for a compact and easy to use driving environment. Likewise gear position is also switch operated for drive, neutral, reverse and park. The CR-V may be discreet and sensible, as opposed to so many models that are overtly bold and-in-your-face, but that’s the secret of its success. It’s a touch of class and class doesn’t have to announce its presence.

124

The price in major European markets has also been released, including in Germany where the car is €95,995. Prices in other international markets, including USA and China, will be released in the coming weeks. Production of the Emira V6 First Edition will start in the spring, with the ‘i4’ four-cylinder First Edition arriving in the autumn. The Emira is an all-new mid-engine premium sports car that builds on the legacy of the Elise, Exige and Evora, the Emira represents a quantum leap forward for Lotus. The Emira has been developed on a new lightweight bonded aluminium chassis – technology pioneered by Lotus and which remains an intrinsic part of the company’s sports car DNA. Powering the V6 First Edition is the much-loved and Lotus-honed 3.5-litre supercharged V6 engine, mid-mounted behind the two seats. Developing 400hp, it’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with a visible gearchange mechanism and hydraulic power-assisted steering. The First Edition comes in one of six vibrant paint colours: Seneca Blue – which was seen at the car’s launch in July – plus Magma Red, Hethel Yellow, Dark Verdant, Shadow Grey and Nimbus Grey. More colours will be available during 2022.

R O A D T E S T: T O Y O TA C O RO LL A TO U RI N G SPORTS – A CAR FOR ALL RE ASONS The term Tourer is used a lot nowadays and essentially means a small estate car. That might seem a bit of a contradiction but most people don’t need the extra space offered by a traditional estate car, they just need that little bit of additional practicality. Whether for family sporting activities, weekends away or that extra load of gardening rubbish to the local tip, the Tourer offers a neat bridge between a normal car and a potentially larger than required SUV or estate. One of the best Tourers in terms of that additionally little bit of practicality is Toyota’s Corolla. The Corolla name has been a mainstay in Toyota’s sales lists for decades, a slight Auris related intermission apart, and a popular addition to many driveways up and down the country. In its current hybrid guise the range of Corolla Tourers start from £25,755 and ends with my top-line Excel version with 2.0-litre petrol power costing £31,960.

There are seven grades within the Touring Sports line up and standard equipment across the board includes adaptive cruise, auto lights, LED headlights, dual zone air conditioning, heated front seats, reversing camera along with Bluetooth, Apple Car Play Android Auto. Engine choices are 1.8-litre 122hp or 2.0-litre 184hp petrol engines, both mated to automatic transmissions. Toyota’s hybrid system starts the car in EV mode and introduces the petrol engine once moving above what might be termed car park

speeds. While cruising the petrol engine and electric motor are used independently according to demand, accelerate and both cut in to provide power, when decelerating the car goes to electric power only. It’s a clever system that’s not only efficient but manages, unless you’re constantly using full throttle, to use electric power for a surprising amount of driving. As a hybrid it removes range anxiety and makes the Corolla a true car for all journeys, whether long or short. Inside there’s a feeling of quality in the build and materials with a usefully large touch screen, unusually for a Japanese car pretty intuitive to use, and some buttons. Hurrah! It’s a smooth performer with very decent acceleration and there’s even a vaguely sporting version. The only downside was the darker interior of my test car made one of my passengers feel a little on the claustrophobic side but lighter colours are available. Overall this is an eminently sensible and practical choice on so many levels.

The aim of her book Med was to find the dishes mined from her memory or, as she calls them, “remembered magic moments” that gave them the most pleasure. Five years in the making, the book was completed during the pandemic, when she enlisted the help of her three children – Simon, Nadia and Anna – and six grandchildren to test and sample recipes. Family and friends would gather in Roden’s garden to gobble fragrant spiced rice and roasted veg, warming lentil soups, meaty Spanish stews, Arabic-inspired filo pastry parcels, steaming bowls of seafood

4. Gently fold the egg whites into the yoghurt mixture and pour into the prepared tin. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the top is lightly browned – watch it carefully for the last few minutes of cooking so that it doesn’t brown too much. The cake will puff up like a soufflé and then subside. 5.

Let it cool a little before lifting it out onto a serving plate. Serve warm or cold.

6. For a beautiful accompaniment to the yoghurt cake, briefly rinse 500g strawberries, hull and cut them in half through the stem end, then sprinkle with 60g caster sugar and the juice of ½ lemon and leave for 1 hour.

We are starting to provide massages using aqua therapy cushions. This is a fantastic option for those who suffer with vertigo or struggles to turn over half way through their massage, as the treatment is done entirely with the client on their back. This procedure involves a heated cushion filled with water that produces a warm sensation underneath your body. It allows those muscles to loosen up and feel comfortable, eliminating any stress or soreness at the same time. The therapist then performs the massage by gently gliding their hands under the clients body. We are all striving to reach that endless feeling of relaxation within our physical and mental state.
