GARDEN DESIGN FROM BLUE TU LIPS.CO.U K Greg Whale has been running Blue Tulips for the last 20 years. He provides garden design concepts from Makeovers to Grand Designs.
LIFE + DESIGN - THE HOLISTIC DESIGN FO R M U L A FRO M T H E M Y ERS TO U C H As we spend more time at home than ever, the winner of the 2021 ‘Kitchen Retailer of the Year’ award, The Myers Touch Design Studio, explains how their unique formula of designing bespoke kitchens ‘creates a positive feeling of light, space and laughter’ that enhances family relationships and forms long-lasting memories in the heart of their home. The Myers Touch Design Team adopt a Life + Design formula to create each new kitchen commission. This unique recipe ensures each of their kitchen designs enrich household relationships and the homeowner’s quality of life through efficiency, functionality and the beauty of their space. The first part of the ‘Life’ client exploration stage is to discover more about their client’s experience from kitchen comforts they might have previously experienced or enjoyed. Once these discoveries have been made, the second phase of The Myers Touch
holistic approach formula is to explore and apply a personal and bespoke ‘Design’ for a customer based on these ‘Life’ desires. By using a range of cabinetry, materials, lighting, appliances and seating solutions, each component is chosen to precisely match their brief so that the finished design brings them both joyfulness and energy each morning and a sense calm at the end of their day. Careful consideration is also given to kitchen lighting as it ties the scheme together to create atmosphere, definition of zones and a sense of calm. Appliances which include integrated mood lighting also help invoke a sense of ambience and relaxation, whilst the inclusion of SieMatic’s PURE glass shelving cabinet features mood lighting that echoes the colour of the cabinetry and kitchen wall-colour.
His process includes a site visit to discuss your requirements and then takes measurements and levels. He will draw an outline plan, work on ideas (linear and organic). He then draws up two scaled concepts for discussion and then a final concept which comes with guidance notes for you or your landscaper to build. (If required he can recommend some landscapers). These are not CAD or Watercolour drawings but classic hand drawn concepts that are easy to read for build and cost purposes. The cost of this service is normally £396. Larger gardens may be charged at £498. If you are interested please have a look at his website BlueTulips.co.uk and book a site visit on 01258 881112 or 07900 431701.

BIG CHRISTMAS APPEAL MEANS YO U N G CA R E R S C A N E N J O Y PA N T O Their excited faces said it all – these young carers were making the most of a break from their daily lives to enjoy the magic of live theatre. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the annual Lighthouse Big Christmas Appeal has been able to provide thousands of free and discounted tickets to children, families and people who might not otherwise be able to experience live entertainment. “Christmas can be a really challenging time for young carers,“ says Kate Halden, programme administrator, at MYTIME Young Carers, a Dorset-based charity working to support young carers aged 5-25. “Children as young as five are caring for family members at home and this doesn’t change at Christmastime when most children are enjoying the festivities. Being able to have the freedom to act like a child and be treated to something as magical as a show at Lighthouse, with their families, means the world to the young carers we support.” This year some 190 young carers were able to see a performance of Beauty and the Beast, the family pantomime starring Chris Jarvis and Michelle Collins produced by the Lighthouse team.
V I S TA H O M E O W N E R S E N J O Y F U N A N D L A U G H T E R AT F E S T I V E C H R I S T M A S L U N C H Homeowners in Parkstone got together to enjoy fun and laughter during a host of festive fun at their annual Christmas lunch. Scores of over-55s who live at Vista, the independent-living community based in Mount Road, enjoyed a three-course meal, including a traditional Christmas dinner, drinks, crackers, and music. Afterwards, Mel Litchfield, Vista’s Community Manager, invited each person to collect and open their Secret Santa present from under the Christmas tree during the special event which enabled them to socialise ahead of Christmas Day. The festive event took place in the communal lounge of the Platinum Skies community, which is one of a host of shared spaces that the homeowners can use. Other communal facilities include an activity room, treatment room, and garden. It was just one of a host of activities

organised for the homeowners in the lead-up to Christmas. Each Platinum Skies community has a dedicated onsite Community Manager who helps to organise fun activities such as wine tasting workshops, yoga, coffee mornings, quizzes, and crafts, as well as providing practical and emotional support to the community’s homeowners. Mel Litchfield, Community Manager for Vista, said: “All of our homeowners had a fantastic time while having a laugh and a chat during their Christmas lunch. It’s an event in the calendar that they all look forward to each year and so it was lovely to see them having so much fun.” To book an in-person or virtual appointment to view a home in Vista or Esprit, go to Platinumskies.co.uk or call the Platinum Skies team on 01202 040996.

S O U T H E R N W AT E R PUBLISHES PLANS F O R S U S TA I N A B L E W AT E R S O U R C E S Southern Water has published its finalised plans for new sustainable water sources to protect Hampshire’s iconic chalk streams and maintain supplies for customers, especially during a drought. The company has unveiled its confirmed proposal for taking less water from the sensitive chalk streams of the River Test and River Itchen, while maintaining supplies to customers. Southern Water has worked closely with Portsmouth Water to develop a plan that maximises the benefit of the planned Havant Thicket Reservoir, which recently received planning permission.

The reservoir is being funded by Southern Water and developed in collaboration with Portsmouth Water in an innovative cross-company agreement that will boost resilience and improve the sharing of water supplies across the county.
Marwell Zoo will unveil a world-first event featuring an all-new collection of 55 dinosaur sculptures next Spring.
Under the finalised Water for Life – Hampshire programme, Southern Water proposes to: • Build a new pipeline to transport more water from the Havant Thicket Reservoir to Southern Water’s Otterbourne Water Supply Works. • Use an innovative technology called water recycling to maintain levels in the reservoir so there is more water available.
BRICKOSAURS! Evolution showcases over 20 species made using more than 2 million toy bricks and will leave adventurers in awe as they embark on an immersive journey through the zoo. The interactive expedition, which is on display alongside the zoo’s hundreds of resident endangered and exotic animals, is sure to excite families, brick and dinosaur enthusiasts alike.
Water recycling speeds up the natural water cycle to provide a sustainable source of clean, safe water that reduces the amount needed to be taken from the environment.
Visitors will go back in time and come face to face with amazing pre-historic creatures such as the incredible seven metre long Spinosaurus, a nodding Heterodontosaurus and a huge Mosasaur emerging from the water.
Further engagement on the plans is now taking place and a public consultation is expected to be announced next Spring as part of the formal planning process.
Enthusiasts will be able to test their knowledge along the trail with a host of fascinating dino facts and build stats at every turn.

At the Fossil Zone, kids both big and small can literally walk in their favourite dinosaurs’ footsteps on the fossil pavement, plus prepare for a few surprises! The event will take professional builders at the Hampshire-based workshop of Bricklive International more than 9,000 hours to complete. BRICKOSAURS! Evolution is included with general admission to the zoo and will be on display from 1st April until 4th September 2022. Marwell offers visitors the opportunity to get up close to amazing members of the animal kingdom from Amur tigers to towering Rothschild’s giraffes in 140-acres of beautiful, spacious parkland. Conservation charity Marwell Wildlife owns and operates the zoo, so every penny spent at the zoo supports amazing projects to conserve habitats and species both in Hampshire and around the world. When Dame Betty Bonbon heard The Bonbon Boys had arrived at her scrumptious sweet stand at Lighthouse she moved quickly to guard her contrary confectionery, but as soon as she discovered the Poolebased Bonbon Boys had been supplying ’Dame Betty Bonbon’s Scrumptious Sweets’ to Lighthouse it was smiles all round. Joe Quinlan of The Bonbon Boys said: “What an honour to be given the seal of approval from Dame Betty Bonbon herself, and to be supplying audiences of Poole’s spectacular pantomime with hand-crafted selections of scrumptious sweets.
“The Bonbon Boys offer pick ‘n’ mix deliveries all-year-round and are thrilled to be working with the dedicated and creative team at Lighthouse this year.” The Bonbon Boys are a Poole-based pick ‘n’ mix delivery company providing highquality confectionery in environmentally friendly packaging. Started during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in 2020 by Joe Quinlan and Kalem Brinkworth (aka ‘The Boys’), The Bonbon Boys have provided more than two tonnes of sweets to the people of Dorset and beyond. We have moved all insurances over to A-One as our previous broker just wasn’t doing anything to support us. A-One have put in every effort to explain the complex world of insurance to us so that we understand what we are buying, have saved us money and ensured we are fully covered.

DIVORCE Alternatives to Court
Can you describe each of these marriage resolution processes? Mediation is often a quicker, less stressful alternative to court proceedings and is completely voluntary. An accredited, neutral Mediator helps both parties to reach an agreement on financial affairs, arrangements for children and any other conflicts that may arise. The Mediator does not impose a solution, but ensures that any settlement is approved by both sides. If there are any specific issues that the couple cannot resolve, an Arbitrator can examine the facts of the case before them and then make a decision. This decision is binding for both parties, and they must both respect the outcome. Collaborative Law is a relatively new form of resolution, and is effectively a round-table meeting with both parties and their solicitors present. This method allows couples to negotiate and receive advice at the same time, and is often much quicker than the court process. What are the first steps for a couple looking to end their relationship via mediation?
Divorce can be a very troubling time for couples and families, especially when the case is brought into the court system. Many undergoing a separation process may not be aware of the alternatives available to those seeking to end their marriage. Mediation, Arbitration and Collaborative Law are highly effective, amicable methods of solving various family disputes without taking the matter into legal proceedings. Mediation in particular has been increasing in popularity, with couples encouraged to take this route before submitting an application to court. Pauline Ellis, Accredited Mediator and Senior Associate Solicitor at Dutton Gregory, talks through the benefits of these alternative procedures and how they work.
In terms of mediation, the first thing that couples need to do is get in touch with an Accredited Mediator to conduct a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting with each of the parties individually and assessing whether or not the case is suitable for mediation. If the parties wished to participate in mediation, they would then have a series of joint sessions with each other and the Mediator, which can be done face-to-face or virtually. Many couples have recently been opting for the virtual option as it cuts down the time that they have to take off work to attend the sessions. What are the major benefits of these family law options? It’s better for all parties involved to keep proceedings away from court, whatever the method of resolution that they opt for. It allows each person to have their voice heard, and to reach a settlement that they have deliberated between themselves. If the case goes to court and reaches a final hearing, the decision is taken out of the hands of the couple, as the judge has the final word. When a judge is reaching a decision, they look purely at the facts and figures involved, including the income needs of each party, their respective ages and whether there are any children, and then decide on the final outcome. These alternative routes offer a chance for the couple to make such decisions for themselves in a cost efficient, amicable manner. To learn more about these marriage resolution methods, visit duttongregory.co.uk or call 01202 315005 to speak with a member of the team.

These are the best European cities to visit in 2022... From France to Slovenia, these urban spots are ripe for exploring. Looking for 2022 travel inspiration? Time Out has revealed its top city break tips for Europe, highlighting places that are ready for a resurgence after tourism was largely put on hold during the pandemic. “For the past 18 months, travellers have largely explored closer to home, with trips to the countryside especially popular, but in 2022 we’re predicting that the city break will make a triumphant return,” says Time Out’s global editor-in-chief Caroline McGinn. From cosy winter weekends to sunny summer escapes, these cities are waiting to welcome you…

Arles, France Synonymous with Vincent van Gogh, who painted one of his famous sunflowers series in the city, Arles is an art-lovers’ paradise. Located on the Rhone River in the South of France, the city is Provence’s Capital of Culture 2022 and will be hosting Les Rencontres de la Photographie festival, the Carrières des Lumières immersive art experience and a variety of exhibitions in the new LUMA arts district.
Odense, Denmark Opening in December, the Hans Christian Andersen Museum is the new jewel in Odense’s cultural crown, celebrating the life and works of the much-loved fairytale author. Denmark’s third-largest city, just 90 minutes by train from capital Copenhagen, is home to the Danish Railway Museum and in 2022 a new light railway will link the picturesque old town and newer neighbourhoods. Brno, Czech Republic Overlooked by Spilberk Castle and the historic Cathedral of St Peter and Paul, the second largest city in the Czech Republic has undergone a modern revamp in recent years. In 2022, the Industrial Project will see several former manufacturing building reopening to the public, and notorious former prison Kaznice is being redeveloped.

Kaunas, Lithuania Famous for its modernist architecture, Kaunas has been named European Capital of Culture 2022 and will play host to exhibitions from artists including Marina Abramović, Yoko Ono and William Kentridge. To discover the city’s many brilliant buildings, grab a Modernist’s Guide to Kaunas (free online or at the Tourist Information Centre) and head out on foot. Ljubljana, Slovenia Already a firm favourite with European city breakers, Ljubljana is worth a repeat visit in 2022, when it will host Velo-City, the annual World Cycling Summit, with free bike hire in the city centre. Culture vultures will find plenty to satisfy their appetites with the return of Festival Ljubljana after year off due to the pandemic, featuring dance, classical and opera concerts; street theatre festival Ana Desetnica starting at the end of June; and the annual jazz festival in July. Fitness trends to watch out for in 2022
From virtual reality to weighted hula hooping, working out is going to get a lot more fun, says Prudence Wade. For many of us, the pandemic has completely transformed how we workout – with a bigger emphasis on flexible training and taking care of your body and soul. In 2022, the ‘hybrid model’ will continue to be big news – as more of us seamlessly switch between athome workouts and sweat sessions in the gym. But there’s also an increased emphasis on having a bit of fun with your workout, as seen in many of the fitness trends set to be big in 2022. Let’s take a look… VR FITNESS At the opposite end of the spectrum is the predicted rise of virtual reality (VR) fitness – about as far from nostalgic childhood activities as you can get. VR has been slowly but surely making its presence known in the fitness industry but previously it’s been too expensive and inaccessible for the average person. That could be changing now. It’s not just traditional fitness apps making their mark (although VR workouts like boxing and skiing are proving popular), but we’re also seeing the rise of ‘gamercising’ – VR apps making your workout into something fun, with lots of challenges and adventures along the way.

REVERSE RUNNING Bored of jogging forwards all the time? You might want to try reverse running – another fitness trend PureGym says is climbing in popularity. This fitness trend originated in the Eighties but is seeing a resurgence, and it’s a great one to try because you don’t need any fancy kit or expensive gadgets. You’d be surprised how different running backwards feels to your traditional forwards jog – it’s said to be easier on the joints, works your muscles in a different way, and is a real challenge for your coordination. Of course, there’s a bit more jeopardy involved – just make sure you’re aware of what’s going on behind you, so you don’t accidentally run into anything, and be sensible! SURFING Surfing made its debut as an Olympic sport at Tokyo 2020, sparking a growing interest in what can only be described as an extremely cool activity. It’s not the easiest sport to master – you definitely have to have a lot of patience, and will have to be prepared to fall down a whole lot. But there’s nothing like catching the perfect wave, and as an added bonus, it’s a full-body workout that will get your heart pumping and muscles toned. If you’re nowhere near the sea, why not combine it with another trend and try VR surfing? Words by Prudence Wade, PA

Preserving the legacy of successful business owners
We believe in preserving the legacy and reputation of any successful business owner who wants to sell their business responsibly and enjoy the next chapter of life. To achieve this, we behave very differently to our competitors. We focus on preserving the name, workforce, culture and locations of every business we buy. And we recruit only the best industry talent to replace the founders. This focus on the human realities of selling a business – such as pride, honesty, integrity and the desire of many owners to do the right thing for the people they are leaving behind – is what makes K-Zen unique. In short, we believe there is a right way and a wrong way to exit a business. We’re here to help you find the right way. We can also help you increase the profitability and value of your business (having added over £100M of increased profitability to a broad spectrum of companies, so far). So, if you think you may need those skills – perhaps as a prelude to making an exit once your business is back on it’s feet – please get in touch. If you want to find out more about how we can help you contact Robbie Mair, 07900 555217 or you can visit www.K-ZenGroup.com.

chic cocktails to dial up happy hour Sam Wylie-Harris delves inside the new bartender’s bible. An art deco jewel and epitome of luxury, Claridge’s, in London’s swanky Mayfair, has been a sophisticated setting for celebratory cocktails since 1856 – and now you can recreate the world’s finest concoctions at home. The hotel’s bars – Claridge’s Bar, The Fumoir, The Painter’s Room and the bar at their Michelin-starred restaurant, Davies and Brook – serve almost 36,000 cocktails every year combined (in case you’re wondering, The Flapper is the most popular). In their new book, you’ll unearth more than 400 cocktail recipes, ‘spanning many decades and the circumference of the globe’, with something to suit every occasion… from Champagne & Sparkling, Stirred & Complex, to Short & Sharp and much more. To whet your thirst, here are four favourites from Claridge’s: The Cocktail Book to fashion now… Extracted from Claridge’s: The Cocktail Book, published by Mitchell Beazley on October 14, priced £25.

Giving your property a lift with Home Staging services As we head into the New Year with Christmas behind us many of us will have made New Years resolutions and may be considering change of some sort, perhaps career or lifestyle based. For those considering a house move of some description, be it buying, selling or letting, having your property Staged before it hits the market could be one of the best investments you will make. So what is Home Staging? Staging is an effective property marketing tool (not to be confused with interior design). Extremely popular in the States and many other countries around the globe including Germany, Spain, New Zealand and Australia, its main purpose is to ensure that a property is reflected in its best light

So what exactly does a professional Home Stager do? There are various different services that Stagers provide, from initial consultation visits with detailed action reports and photos through to full Staging packages. A professional Home Stager will take the time to explore your property (both inside and out) and look at it through the eyes of the potential buyer. Garden trends: Recycle, re-use and rewild Experts predict the trends that are going to be hottest in the garden in 2022. Sustainability, recycling and the use of native plants are going to be trends which gardeners will be pursuing in 2022, experts are predicting. Award-winning garden designer and TV presenter AnnMarie Powell (ann-mariepowell.com) says priorities have changed since lockdown. “It’s about people wanting more layers in their garden. Pre-lockdown, people wanted something nice to look at. Post-lockdown, people want to have something that’s beautiful to be in. “People have realised gardens aren’t just for looking at. They are places that enable you to do something good which makes you feel good, creating a space that’s not only beneficial to you but beneficial to the environment

as well.”
“Lots of people will want elements of grow-your-own and are keen to find out about food provenance,” says Powell. “The vegan movement, healthy eating and wellbeing, organic and no-dig – all those elements are much more in people’s psyche. People want to know where plants come from, that they are chemical-free and haven’t travelled for thousands of miles.” MORE ‘LASAGNE PLANTING’ IN SMALL SPACES “Container gardening will continue but people will be trying to extend the season of interest,” Powell predicts. “Sarah Raven put the bulb lasagne (where bulbs are planted in layers and flower at different times) into people’s minds a few years ago and people with container gardens are really understanding that. “It’s not just about appreciating the flower, it’s about that flower inviting company to your balcony or window box to allow you the space and time to watch nature up close and personal.”

GARDEN TRENDS | OUTDOOR LIVING
EMBRACING ALL SEASONS “I think we’ll be adopting a new way of thinking about seasonality,” predicts Andrew Duff , vice chair of the Society of Garden Designers and managing director of the Inchbald School Of Design. “In the past, we’ve tended to see autumn as the end of the year and the garden going to bed. But perhaps due to lockdown, people are seeing how exciting winter is and are beginning to embrace it. “It’s to do with acceptance. In winter, we are realising that the branches of the trees, the strong sunlight and the bare soil is an important aesthetic in our calendar. It’s the skeletal nature of winter.” (andrewduffgardendesign.com) GIVING HOUSEPLANTS OUTDOOR SPACE Horticultural influencer Michael Perry, aka Mr Plant Geek, says: “There is the upcoming trend of using houseplants outdoors, directly into pots mixed with the usual summer flowering plants, or in borders and hanging baskets. The perfect candidates are spider plants, tradescantia, and perhaps even a specimen monstera. It’s the perfect way to gravitate indoor plant enthusiasts to the great outdoors, even if they just have a window box.”

PRETTY VEG Powell reckons more gardeners will be growing ornamental veg within their flower beds rather than in a vegetable patch. “Often people are wanting a muddle of productive plants as well as beautiful perennial plants. Things like cardoons, artichokes, we grow them as beautiful ornamentals and it’s the same with apple trees. Lots of plants that you would grow as ornamentals are edible.” REWILDING RESUMES “Rewilding will continue apace and we are keen on that because every time you plant something it helps towards changing the world in some shape or form. Plants lock in carbon, attract pollinators and create habitat. It’s curated wilding,” Powell explains. “If you create pools of planting in among natural landscape where you are planting a mix of grasses and single flowers, which are the plants pollinators love to feast on, they are like nectar bars – areas of loose landscape with no intervention and pools of planting amongst it.” She recommends using grasses such as Pennisetum ‘Fairy Tails’, miscanthus and anemanthele (pheasant’s tail grass).

“It’s curated wilding, of as large an area as you can, so you’ll be managing those areas in amongst the unmanaged areas. But it creates peaks of colour among scrubby, grassy, brambly areas. “For colour, you’d be going for echinacea, heleniums, buddleias and those on the RHS plants for pollinators list.” LANDSCAPING CHANGES “With hard landscape, upcycling and recycling will continue,” Duff predicts. “Gravel is being embraced because it’s in everyone’s budget and it offers a more natural feeling to the garden as plants self-seed and spread to the gravel, presenting a softer aesthetic.” GOING NATIVE “A trend which is coming through is our acceptance of native species,” says Duff. “We are finally waking up to the glory of our native plants, which work well in our changing climate, such as the wonderful hazel Corylus avellana, native grasses like luzula and carex. They do so much for our native wildlife and we are seeing that come forward.”

PONDS WILL BE POPULAR “People really want water in their gardens for the same aesthetic and beneficial wilding project. If you have water in your garden, wildlife will come because they need to drink,” says Powell. THE BUZZ WORD IS SUSTAINABILITY “It’s all about reduce, re-use, recycle. We are looking at trying to keep sites as neutral as possible with regards to taking things out of the garden. It might be crushing concrete that has come out of a sub base and re-using it as a new footpath,” says Powell. “People will be thinking, ‘What have I already got that I can re-use?’ It might be a coal bucket or the inside of an old washing machine drum. On Instagram, I have seen people using the trays that grapes come in for growing seeds. It’s not just about the aesthetics, it’s about practicalities.” FURNITURE FASHION “We call it ‘dine and recline’, where your garden becomes like a lounge, but I think people are wanting things that are a bit more quirky than rattan. I’ve started looking at steel which has a reclaimed vintage vibe to it. That will last forever. You can just throw a blanket over it,” says Powell. Words by Hannah Stephenson, PA

L A N D LO R D S FIN ED £ 13,0 0 0! THERE AND BACK A G A I N , A C O V I D TA L E
A couple have been fined £13,000 after they were found guilty of unlawfully evicting four tenants and breaching management regulations on a property they rented out in London.
I write this staring at a Christmas destroyed for our industry and with every phone-call another dreaded cancellation. I can’t blame our customers, it’s not their fault - but got to say it’s hard to conjure up anything positive to say at the moment. We are looking down the barrel of the gun and the Wonky Table, my lobby network is in full red alert.
The landlords changed the locks whilst the tenants were at work, without going through the correct possession notice procedures. It was then found they had failed to display an up-todate Gas Safety Certificate, Electrical Certificate, and emergency contact details.
A Christmas destroyed, again. Irresponsible government and scaremongering media has meant that the Christmas has faded away and we now look set for a very hard dark quarter.
Dagenham council were told by the landlords the tenants had left voluntarily, however, the courts did not agree with this. They were therefore fined, £2,000 for each of the four tenants illegally evicted, £700
When I wrote last month’s column, we were so positive about the Christmas period, we were full and looking to fill the coffers for the long winter ahead. Now we face renewed restrictions, a December disaster in terms of trade – ultimately it’s going to be a very difficult winter with much depleted reserves – with my phone on overload with just one question, “Where’s Rishi?”

In the mood for a cosy winter break? Hugely popular during the pandemic for summer escapes, Cornwall is magical in winter too, as Katie Wright discovers. Ducking into the diminutive St Ives Bakery, where rows of pink and white marbled meringues are stacked in the windows, the inviting aroma of freshly baked pastry envelops you like a warm hug. Rumour has it that the Fore Street bakery sells the seaside town’s finest pasties, and when I arrive in the early afternoon there are only a handful of the day’s shortcrust delicacies left. Keen to expand my horizons, instead of the traditional Cornish variety I select a steak and stilton pasty, devouring the thick pastry pocket filled with chunks of tender beef, root vegetables, gravy and tangy blue cheese straight from the brown paper bag while perched on a low wall at the seafront, a few minutes’ walk downhill from the bakery.

If surfing or wild swimming aren’t your cup of tea, there is one way to take a dip in Cornwall without having to brave biting sea temperatures. Opened last year, the UK’s first geothermal lido, part of the art deco Jubilee Pool complex, extracts water from a 410-metre well to keep the shallow saltwater pool at a balmy 30 to 35 degrees C. The water feels wonderful when I first wade in, but I have to keep paddling to stay warm enough during the hourlong session (£11.75 for an adult; jubileepool.co.uk). Even more steamy than the geothermal pool is the hot tub I sink into that night (and every other night) on the terrace of The Gate House, the three-bedroom former rectory in which I’m staying on the Clowance Estate. Situated at the far end of the 97-acre estate, surrounded by trees that are starting to shed their autumn leaves, the property feels secluded and cosy yet spacious, with an open-plan kitchen/dining area and conservatory that opens onto the terrace. With delightfully comfy beds (the sheets are five-star hotel-level soft) and virtual silence at night, the luxurious bedrooms are ideal if catching up on sleep is top of your holiday priorities.
The main Clowance manor house was the seat of the St Aubyns family until 1839. Now the building houses a reception, a café-bar, the swimming pool, gym and spa. From Scandi-style A-frame lodges to converted houses, all properties are self-catered, meaning the kitchens are very well-equipped (I get particularly excited about the immaculate drawers full of cutlery and utensils) and supermarket delivery drivers are used to dropping off grocery orders straight to your door. Last year, the estate was forced to close due to coronavirus restrictions, but once lockdown ended and UK travel opened up, Cornwall became a hugely popular summer staycation destination. “It’s been a bit up and down,” says resort manager Wayne Gilbert. “The impact on the business was massive.” Now though, Clowance is almost back to full capacity and the team is relishing being in the spotlight.

“It’s given us a good opportunity as a company to show people what we’re all about,” says Gilbert, who enjoys welcoming back guests who “love the sights and the quirkiness of Cornwall”. With renewed travel restrictions due to the Omicron variant, staycations are looking even more attractive again, and as my visit proves, Cornwall makes for a brilliant break all year round, not just in summer. If country walks, stunning scenery and charming seaside villages float your boat, you’ll find a lot to love here – just make sure to watch out for the seagulls. Interior trends set to be big for 2022
Here’s what design platform Houzz predicts when it peers into its crystal ball, says Sam Wylie-Harris. It’s been a turbulent time in the world of interiors. From pre-pandemic easy-breezy colour schemes for when we wanted to chill out, to decadent decor and glamorous touches for socialising at home… And then the sudden need for so many of us to WFH and home office space the focus of our desire, who’s to say what a new dawn will bring? As we look ahead to 2022, home renovation and design platform Houzz.co.uk has unique insights into how people are designing their homes with a community of more than 65 million homeowners and home design enthusiasts, and more than 2.7 million renovation and design professionals. Here, they reveal six key home design trends along with their furnishing forecast to help you scale up your space…

We’re also anticipating statement headboards to be big next year, a search term that shot up by 87% this year. Professionals on Houzz are opting for super-sized designs or even building bespoke panelled units that house clever storage solutions. “I’m big on headboards,” says Omar Bhatti of Space Shack. “We’ve done so many statement or bespoke designs. It’s not just a simple headboard anymore it’s part of the whole design of the room.” Biophilia meets sustainability The design world’s focus on bringing the outdoors in shows no signs of subsiding, with natural materials and nature-inspired tones continuing to be popular as we move into 2022. Biophilia, the innate human instinct to connect with nature, has been a key design principle throughout this year and will continue to be seen in interior choices, such as colour palettes and materials. “We live in a society that’s overworked and overstimulated, and this has a huge effect on our wellbeing,” Itai Palti of Hume says. “Our homes are usually the only place where we have a choice of how much stimulation we’re exposed to.”

The sociable garden Searches for the term ‘garden designer’ have grown by more than eight times this year as homeowners turn their attention to their outdoor areas. More and more, gardens are being seen as a relaxing extension of interior living spaces and designed as such, with tables, furniture and rugs that would not be out of place indoors. Our gardens have provided sanctuary throughout the pandemic and now that we’re able to socialise they’re a prime entertaining spot. In 2022, we expect to see more outdoor kitchen and dining areas and garden designers on Houzz say clients are more frequently requesting worktops, sinks and even fridges to kit out their outdoor kitchen areas.

Joyful interiors With many people spending so much time at home during the past year and a half, homeowners have been focusing more on bringing their own personality to their interiors. With this, has come an increased colour confidence, which was evident at 2021’s design shows and being seen in many of the new projects being uploaded to Houzz. Searches by users for ‘sage green’, ‘duck egg blue’ and ‘mustard yellow’ have all increased in popularity, and we expect to see more of these shades in interiors next year. “My clients are definitely being braver with colour,” says Burton. “People are a bit more comfortable to step out of their comfort zone, so I’ve seen a lot more colour. Not just bolds either, my clients are choosing warmer neutrals like dusty pinks and earthy tones. They want to feel hugged by their home.” Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

New Year, New You! January is historically a time for detoxing and dieting after our Christmas indulgences and to start the year ahead in a healthy frame of mind – and body.
With everyone currently spending more time at home, whether that’s due to remote working or just preferring to stay safe indoors, now is an excellent time to invest in yourself and your biggest investment – your sanctuary. Wellness units such as saunas, steam rooms and spas are now available for home installation and with plenty of wellness options, there’s something to suit all tastes. SAUNA Our infrared saunas provide relief for many ailments - from the common cold and chronic fatigue to rheumatoid arthritis and musculoskeletal pain. They are also effective when dealing with cardiovascular health and skin conditions and assist with performance in endurance sports and post natal recovery. Perspiration or sweating is one of the main ways our bodies get rid of toxins that accumulate inside us and just 15 minutes in a Jaquar portable sauna can help us sweat as much as we would normally in an entire day. STEAM ROOM A steam room is a Turkish style sauna that uses boiling water to generate wet heat or high humidity instead of the dry heat of regular saunas and are also excellent in dealing with: Detoxification - The list of chemicals claimed to be removed from the body includes: mercury, lead, copper, cadmium, manganese, sodium, chloride, arsenic, nickel, benzenes, street drugs, prescription drugs,

Weight Control – It is claimed that a 15 minute sauna session is as effective for weight loss as rowing or jogging for 30 minutes. The improved blood flow to organs and endocrine glands speeds up their metabolic process, increasing caloric burn. Fat becomes water soluble at 110°F. An indoor sauna reaches temperatures of between 145°F to 190°F, thereby exceeding this and helping your body to release subcutaneous fat along with the sweat and toxins. Cardiovascular Conditioning - The human body will naturally try and cool itself as temperature increases. It does this by diverting blood from the internal organs to the extremities and skin by vasodilation. This increases heart rate, cardiac output

M OTO R I N G N E WS Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
R O A D T E S T: M G H S – Q U A L I T Y A N D E Q U I P M E N T A S S TA N D A R D MG, the famous British brand, is producing an increasingly impressive range of vehicles given the price point of their models. Their flagship model is the HS and priced from £21,495 and includes a plug-in hybrid priced at £30,095. There is just one engine, a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. With two trim levels, the Excite and the more highly specified Exclusive, standard fare across the range is very generous. Air conditioning, auto lights and wipers, auto dimming rear view mirror, parking sensors and rear camera, cruise control, navigation, high beam assist, 10” touchscreen along with Apple Car Play and Android Auto plus leather seats all come as standard. The Exclusive model from £23,995 adds a truly panoramic sunroof, dual zone air conditioning and heated seats.
J A N UA RY 2 2
Both externally and internally the HS looks and feels a quality product, there are soft touch materials in evidence throughout the interior and switches and controls operate with a pleasantly precise feel. Despite the march of digitalisation, and the MG is no exception in this regard, there are still buttons for the key functions. Although annoyingly the climate control and heated seats need the touchscreen. That large 10” touchscreen has nice clear graphics and is pretty intuitive compared to some larger and more prestigious marques. The driving position appears high even with the electric height adjustment at its lowest setting, but both the front and rear seats are very comfortable and supportive. My top-line Exclusive model felt spacious, not least due to a panoramic glass roof of which half opens as a sunroof. The space
108
continues in the luggage area with an additional storage compartment under the floor and split fold rear seats to increase the carrying potential further. On the road the MG passes the benchmark 60 mph in 9.6 seconds and is a smooth, refined drive and with a particularly precise manual gearbox. The engine isn’t the most modern and fuel economy can be beaten by newer competitors, but 38 mpg is by no means poor. For a taller, non-sports SUV the MG handles well, soaking up the roughest of pot-holed, undulating roads. This is a hugely impressive SUV with high levels of quality and standard equipment marking it out for serious consideration to buyers looking for a larger SUV. It’s one I would be happy to have on my drive.
R O A D T E S T: MA ZDA 3 SALO O N – D I SC R EE T LO O KS H I D E AU TO M OTIVE Q UALIT Y In a motoring world where cars, to the average person, all look vaguely alike Mazda’s 3 saloon is arguably no different. It looks pleasant enough but in reality is a design that could carry any automotive badge. Sit behind the wheel though and you find those discreet looks hide a car whose quality, drive and equipment belies its price tag. Mazda’s 3 comes in both saloon and hatchback with prices starting at £21,955 for the hatchback and £24,955 for the saloon, and it’s the saloon we’re concentrating upon here, although many of the features are the same in both formats.
The Mazda has a very decent boot and the aperture is a good size too, often a practicality failing on saloons, and despite its 4-door status there are split folding rear seats. Saloons can be practical! There’s also, in my view, a good argument for saying that saloons are quieter than their hatchback counterparts by nature of their fully enclosed load area.
On the road the car drives beautifully and has an interior that feels extremely premium and high quality. It’s a really nice place to be and there’s a reassuringly positive feel to the controls, and well done Mazda for having buttons and not over-thetop touch screen control for everything. A central display, crisp white on black dials and a head-up display make for easy reading.
Hatchbacks account for by far the greatest number of sales with saloons notching up a very small percentage. If you thought saloons are less practical than a hatchback then you’re right....some of the time. How often do you remove the parcel shelf from your hatchback? How often do you lower the seats in your hatchback? For many people the answer is not that often.
A single 2.0-litre petrol engine is offered on all saloon models, developing 186PS, and with clever hybrid engineering returns commendable fuel economy. I averaged 56mpg in a top-of-the-range manually geared GT Sport Tech. Standard fare on the Sport Tech GT is very comprehensive to say the least with everything you would expect to find on a much more premium brand.
Mechanically there’s a wonderfully smooth 6-speed manual gearchange (auto is available), refined ride and handling and very tidy acceleration. It’s not a car to excite petrolheads, but for those wanting comfortable luxury and a choice away from the usual automotive suspects then the Mazda 3 saloon has nailed it!

R O A D T E S T: IN EOS G RENAD IER – A P R O P E R LY IMPRESSIVE OFFROADER As car marques go few can match Sir William Lyon’s Jaguar, especially when you consider it started off in Blackpool building sidecars. In its modern incarnation Jaguar is now one of the companies that is leading the charge to electrification. Their aim is to have a completely electric range by the middle of the decade, their start being the critically acclaimed iPace However, my Jaguar drive was the long standing, non-electric, XF. It’s a car that has been around since 2008 and which has seen evolution rather than revolution in its modernisation. Sharper lines, a visually lower stance with a deeper front grille give today’s XF a mean and imposing stance. Finished in metallic grey with a black interior the test car certainly enhanced this look, especially with the external black pack. As always Jaguar don’t stint on the standard equipment and my R Dynamic HSE doesn’t disappoint on the technical or comfort front. At £44,760 it’s somewhat of a bargain in the sector. Although only a 2.0-litre,
4-cylinder engine sits under the bonnet it’s a powerful one that propels the XF past the benchmark 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and on to 155 mph. Add all-wheel-drive and this is a Jaguar that runs as well as its four-legged namesake, albeit with somewhat more longevity than the big cats in the wild who are sprinters rather than marathon runners. I’m a fan of more traditional, lighter and arguably more British interior style rather than the dark hues present in my test car. That said it didn’t detract from the impressive comfort and quality of the XF’s interior. Not too long ago I criticised the XE and XF for what I saw as a drop in quality. That has certainly been rectified and the XF feels like it is back where it belongs on that side of the quality equation. There’s also a lesson for the digitisation obsessives in car design, it doesn’t have to be complicated and can be intuitive, as the XF demonstrates perfectly. On the road the XF doesn’t disappoint and despite the mere 4-cylinders retains a commendably refined air. With ride options ranging from sport to waft mode it’s a delight to drive. On the debit side the XF isn’t that spacious considering its size. There are also still traces of cheaper plastics that should never be allowed inside a Jaguar! Overall, though this is a car that acquits itself with considerable aplomb and which can happily park on my drive anytime.

ROAD TEST: TOYOTA YARI S C ROS S – S HAR P, M O D ER N AN D D I STI N CTIVE For those who remember Toyota’s Yaris as a small economical hatchback it may come as somewhat of a shock at the number of variants now bearing the Yaris name. However, it certainly hasn’t lost its appeal as an economical hatchback of choice. It has just got significantly trendier, and in the case of Yaris GR considerably more sporting.
3-cylinder petrol engine mated to an automatic transmission. It also benefits from a 59kwh electric motor to boost power and reduce emissions. You have an allwheel-drive option on one trim level and although not for true mud-plugging snowy roads and the local village fete should prove no problem thanks to higher ground clearance and that all-wheel-drive.
In addition to the standard, lead-in Yaris model with 5-doors, 1.5-litre petrol engine and prices starting from £20,210, there’s the Yaris Cross which offers a crossover style from £22,515 and then the barnstorming 257bhp Yaris GR from £30,020. However, it’s the Yaris Cross that’s the focus of our attention in this review.
Standard fare across the line-up includes keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, automatic air conditioning and a multi-media system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto
One friend described the Yaris Cross as looking like a friendly chipmunk from the front! Whatever your particular view, styling is very subjective, the Yaris Cross looks sharp and modern and more distinctive than many of its competitors. Power in all models is via a 1.5-litre,
with Bluetooth. There’s a good range of paint choices available as options, various optional packs as well as individual items like a rather splendid panoramic roof at a not unreasonable £330. Inside, the Yaris Cross has a smart and functional look with what seems to be a very good build quality throughout. There are also still physical knobs for the climate control and buttons for major controls. Hurrah! A decent on road ride allows for pretty good handling and while the CVT gearbox does occasionally get gruff, it’s a lot better than many I have tried and is for the most part quite refined. The performance isn’t anything like hot hatch territory but the Yaris manages to be fun, and you’ll have no problem keeping up on the motorway and nipping past slower traffic on A roads. If you’re looking for something a little funky, but with mainstream reliability and practicality, then the Yaris Cross is a perfect choice!

ROAD TEST: VO LVO V9 0 – A VERY D ES I R AB LE SWED I S H STEED Volvo’s staple buyer has changed over the last few years with the transformation of its range, from safe and worthy to dynamic and fashionable. The Swedish car maker has created a very cool, Scandinavian (even though they’re not all made there now) look to their line-up. Their high-tech march towards electrification includes plug-in, mild hybrid and pure electric models. My particular Swedish steed was the V90 Recharge plug-in hybrid in R-Design specification. Essentially what that means is a traditionally spacious Volvo estate with a distinctly Scandinavian vibe. Despite the popularity of SUVs Volvo estates are still in demand, and for good reason. These are load carriers, not in the same league as the square box Volvos of old but still pretty impressive, they are also packed with luxuries touches.
mirrors, leather, heated front seats with electric adjustment and lumbar support, heated wiper blades, dual zone climate control and as you would expect from Volvo there is a plethora of standard safety kit. Prices start from £42,995 and my test model, the Recharge plug-in hybrid, R-Design, at £57,525. Options included a fabulous power glass tilt and slide panoramic sunroof, cornering lighting, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel and windscreen, memory passenger seat, Bowers & Wilkins sound system, adaptive dampers and
Standard fare across all V90 models includes auto dimming mirrors, auto lights, high beam assist, auto wipers, keyless start, cruise, electric and power folding door

air suspension, parking camera and a retractable towbar. This bumps the price to a not inconsiderable £66,675. Power comes from a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive for any kind of weather. With added electric power the V90 passes the benchmark 62mph in just 5.9 seconds. In pure electric mode the Volvo can take you up to 52 miles, so more than enough for a commute. Gear changes are smooth, the refinement is excellent giving the V90 an air of unruffled calm. It’s one of those cars that you feel could take you from one end of the country to the other and emerge with no aches or feeling in any way jaded. The interior is modern and minimalist but at the same time has the look and feel of a luxury car. It’s an object lesson in how interiors can look so classy yet remain practical. In case you haven’t already gathered, I like Volvos and this one in particular.

We use advanced radio frequencies to target loose and sagging skin caused by weight loss, ageing, or pregnancy. This treatment is a safe and effective way of tackling skin that has lost its elasticity on the face, neck, abdomen, thighs and arms. RF is a leading technique using energy to heat the subdermal layers of the skin to above-normal body temperature. Award-winning service from start to finish Having tried a few agents with little success, I approached Saxe Coburg and was immediately impressed by their professionalism and knowledge of the market. Once the sale was agreed, Lynn and Lesley worked tirelessly to keep the chain together, keeping me regularly updating and offering advice and support with my onward purchase. I would not hesitate to recommend them; outstanding service. - MS FLYNN
I have to give a huge shoutout to Lynn Kravos and Lesley Newcombe at Saxe Coburg. They handled the recent sale of my property with complete professionalism and outstanding help and expertise. Keeping me calm through stressful times and reassuring on difficult days - not been the easiest of times or sales during Covid! Thank you all so very much I am at last getting settled and am very content in my beautiful new home. - MRS CULVERWELL
