Lewis-Manning started the year with a bang to kick-off a year of activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. The packed calendar of events started with a small celebratory tea party with staff, trustees and patients who have played a part in the charity’s success over the past three decades, hosted at the hospice on Longfleet Road in Poole. Clare Gallie, Chief Executive at LewisManning Hospice Care said, “LewisManning Hospice Care has achieved so much in the past 30 years, helping over 8,000 patients, carers and loved ones to get the much needed hospice care they deserve. None of this would have been possible without the incredible help and

H A N D - C R A F T ED, B ES P O K E K ITC H EN I N S P I R AT I O N Award-winning kitchen designers, The Myers Touch are delighted to showcase handcrafted kitchen cabinetry and furniture design examples created for customers that want a truly personalised kitchen. Their bespoke approach extends beyond the cabinetry. For example, their designers have included false chimney breasts with concealed extractors over AGA cookers to add charm and a focal point to a kitchen space. Pop-up mechanisms within peninsulas to reveal flat-screen TVs have also been created, as have custom-made wall units for elegantly storing coffee pods and mugs. By applying their unique, holistic approach formula for each bespoke kitchen commission, their expert design team can create a truly personal kitchen-living space for a client based on their ‘Life’ desires. Based on this formula, their design team carefully choose a range of bespoke cabinetry, surfaces, worktops, paint finishes, materials and wish list appliances for their new kitchen space to bring ‘light, space & laughter’ into the heart of their client’s home.
William Brown of Winkworth commented, “We have recently had a lot of success selling a great selection of properties in the ever popular Branksome area and as a result, have a number of clients registered with us still very keen to purchase a home there imminently. “Having lived in Branksome for a number of years and my daughter going to the local school, I am extremely passionate and enthusiastic about this area and would love to help our clients find their ideal home here. “If anybody is considering selling, either now or in the near future or indeed are just curious as to the value of their property, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I

Lasting Powers of Attorney: How to safeguard your finances and future Whereas Wills have always been regarded as a crucial document, Lasting Powers of Attorney, or LPAs, are quickly catching up thanks to the peace of mind they bring. In this article Alistair MacFarlane, Partner at Dutton Gregory Solicitors, explains how LPAs can be indispensable for individuals and families, helping to avoid unnecessary arguments and providing clarity when difficulties arise. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney and how do they work? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a written document that delegates authority to one or more individuals, so that they can handle your affairs in the event that you are unable to. There are two types of LPA, one for Property and Financial Affairs, the other for Health and Welfare. Without an LPA, when someone loses the capacity to make decisions for themselves a third party, known as a Deputy, will be appointed to do so by the Court of Protection. This can be a lengthy and expensive process in comparison to drafting an LPA, although both are effective. What are the major differences between the two types? The Property and Affairs LPA incorporates financial choices, which can cover everything from paying utility bills, operating a bank account and even selling a house. Health and Welfare extends to choices about where you live, how you are cared for and the medications and treatments that you receive.
How should I choose an attorney? I think that by far the most important quality in your attorneys is trustworthiness – is this a person that you trust to make the most vital decisions about your health and wellbeing? When it comes to finances, think about their abilities in terms of running your affairs and making decisions that chime with your own needs and wishes. It’s also essential to discuss these topics with your attorneys and solicitors beforehand, to brief them on the current state of your affairs and what you would like in the event that you lose capacity. If you’re thinking of appointing more than one attorney, it’s important that they get along with each other and are able to reach decisions amicably to avoid any delays. How much does a Lasting Power of Attorney cost? Depending on the specific circumstances, as everyone’s case is unique, you can expect to pay around £450 for an LPA – whether it’s a finance or health LPA doesn’t usually factor into the cost.

For both documents, our solicitors would charge £600 and in the case of a couple who individually request both, meaning four documents in total, it would come to a total of £800. VAT would be an additional cost but any extra clauses would usually be included in the original cost. Why should someone use a solicitor when getting a Lasting Power of Attorney? There are several major advantages to having a knowledgeable solicitor on-hand whilst sorting out these legal documents. They can guide you through the entire process from start to finish, provide expertise and offer their insight into any complex legal issues that may arise. For more information on LPAs or any other personal legal matter, visit www.duttongregory.co.uk or call 01202 315005.

The Founders of Hearnes have lived in Talbot Woods since 2002 and the Managing Director also had a period of residence here as well. They all comment that it is a truly beautiful sylvan area to live and it’s hard to believe it is so close to the town centre of Bournemouth. It’s a superb area for families as it’s so convenient for everything, being in the centre of the conurbation with the beach less than 2 miles away. Hearnes have specialised in Talbot Woods for 25 years and have a real passion for the area and the properties within it. They have been the most successful estate in Talbot Woods over that period helping more people to move than any other agent so have excellent knowledge as well as loyal ties to many of the residents. We all hope that the area always retains its natural beauty which is largely down to our predecessors and the planting carried out 200 years ago!

I have a Tenant who has complained about mice at their property. Who is responsible for sorting this out? This is an interesting question! The Landlord and Tenant

and for which parts of the property the Landlord is responsible. Whilst the Landlord has to carry out the repair, it does not automatically assume that the Landlord has to pay for it! A clear example would be a broken window; the Landlord is responsible for repairing it, but it will depend on how the window was broken as to who is responsible for the payment. The Landlord should still carry out the repair in a timely fashion (or risk a Court determining a breach in the Landlord’s duty to the Tenant), even if that means paying for it initially. However, there are some grey areas – one of which is Pest Control – and simply recommending that the Tenant puts out mouse traps will not be the answer! As most mice gain access through a hole in a wall or roof – it would be an issue of the structure of the

if the mice are outside, is the Tenant disposing of their refuse correctly? A good Letting Agent will work hard to resolve such issues! “Fleur Lettings is hands down THE best Agency in the area. Ways to make the most of your space
Stylish solutions to step it up a notch. While some things in the home can be short-lived, passed on or recycled, we all want our bathroom flooring to be functional and hardwearing, especially considering its footprint. But we also need comfort to the touch of our toes, good looks, and possibly offering the illusion of space, too, as wash rooms are frequently on the small side. Inspired by spa-like elements and equipped with the latest features, while the bathroom carpet debate rumbles on, here’s how to achieve the right flooring for your layout and lifestyle, according to the experts… Vinyl is viable and in vogue “Vinyl and luxury vinyl are ideal flooring solutions for bathrooms,” says Stuart Hannah, showroom manager at The Floor Room. “Particularly hardwearing and unaffected by spills and splashes, they’re able to effectively emulate more expensive materials and designs – such as stone or ceramic tiles – whilst also benefitting from an easy and affordable installation process. Think beyond the bath mat: opt for a washable rug “When looking for a floor covering within the bathroom, our advice is to not only search for ‘bath mat’ options but also consider a washable rug,” advises Daniel Prendergast, managing director of The Rug Seller. “With washable rugs, you can choose from a variety of sizes that will not only add warmth and comfort underfoot, but look fantastic. They’re suitable for all floor types, whether tiles or wooden floors.” If you have underfloor heating, it’s a good idea to choose a rug with low thermal resistance, and be hessian rather than felt-backed, he adds. Give careful thought to the thickness and the size of the rug, so it has a negligible effect on the performance of the underfloor heated system. “Tiled floors can be cold and uninviting, so adding a large washable rug or mat will not only add warmth and texture to your room, it can also help to prevent slipping on smooth surfaces. Consider buying two rugs in the same design, one for the bath or shower, and one for the sink or vanity unit.” Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

First look at Norfolk’s new luxury cabin escape Banish the blues and flee to the countryside, says Claire Spreadbury. I can’t actually remember the last time I had a bath with a friend, but it was probably about 35 years ago. It’s not an opportunity that crops up very often, but that’s set to change at Congham Hall’s brand new Orchard Cabins, as the star attraction of the sleek openplan spaces is an outdoor bathtub. Wiggling into skin-tight swimming costumes – after a three-course meal of roasted beetroot, goat’s cheese, plump pillows of ravioli and a decadent assiette of (not so) mini puddings – seems like a good idea at the time.

(That might have had something to do with the delicious lashings of Fleurie we washed it down with.) And once the the stainless steel silver taps are splurting water into the ginormous tub, there’s no turning back. Bubbles spill over the top as we hurl ourselves in, seconds away from deciding an outdoor bath is exactly what every single one of us needs in our lives right now. Putting the world to rights while trying to stay above water, we fight back the giggles while debating the monstrosities of life in 2022. The apple trees watch over us, swaying disapprovingly at the drowning slippers and robes mopping up our overspill, and the shrieks we can’t bear to keep in. The stars twinkle from a distance, promising a better display in brighter months, as we lay back and savour the dark night sky. The Norfolk hotel has built five luxurious new rooms with outdoor bathtubs, all overlooking the beautiful apple orchard at Congham Hall in Norfolk. Launched to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the hotel’s management by Nicholas Dickinson (previously of Le Manoir and Luxury Family Hotels) and his team, the timing couldn’t be better. As ‘The Great Resignation’ rumbles on, with people choosing to move away from cities and into the countryside, it offers a great taste of Norfolk life. Already, Burnham Market in north Norfolk has been nicknamed ‘Chelsea-on-Sea’, due to vast swathes of Londoners upping sticks and moving there. Although Congham Hall is in the west of the county, there’s still an abundance of fresh air and green spaces, beautiful beaches, hugely affordable stunning houses, and it’s teeming with nature at every twist and turn. As well as the outdoor bath, the new rust-coloured cabins
(which
look
like

containers from the outside), give you the option of bathing inside, like a normal person. Much less fun, but because one roll-top is sometimes not enough, you can take your pick from the brushed tin tub outside, or the pretty pink bath in the bathroom, both big enough for multiple bathers.

Inside the cabin, a squashy bed awaits our weary limbs, beside a large pink sofa, marble-topped circular coffee tables and comfy spinning chair; the perfect spot to sit and take in the views of the orchard. A green bistro table and chairs sit out on the balcony for morning brews and sundowners. It really is a place to relax, and the slow pace makes you feel like you’re on an actual holiday. “We’re in Norfolk, there’s no such thing as late,” Nicholas tells us as we apologise for our tardiness at dinner. We’re then encouraged to sup on aperitifs by the bar before heading over to our table in The Samphire Kitchen – a two AA Rosette restaurant, which has recently had a restyle. We peruse the menus, shortlist wine and nibble on salty edamame beans. Game and fish feature heavily because of the location – Congham aims to source 80% of ingredients from within a 20-mile radius, as long as they’re the best available. And there’s a separate vegetarian menu, too. Mains cost between £20 and £30, starters around £10 and desserts about £9, but room rates that include dinner are a good idea.
Wine is well chosen, around £40 for a really good bottle, and staff are attentive. The co-owners also wait on tables – either a sign of their hands-on nature, or the post-Covid impact on hospitality. The Secret Garden Spa features a 12-metre swimming pool, steam room, saunas, treatments rooms and a new outdoor deck with hot tub. Roomy enough not to feel awkward when you clamber in among other guests, it’s the perfect spot at dusk, when pink skies light up the surrounding woods and meadows and the warm, gentle bubbles heat up our cold bodies. If you feel the need to explore further afield, local walking routes are available from reception, along with pairs of Dubarry boots. We blow the cobwebs (and hangover) away on a flat three-mile loop, taking in the old railway line and local woodland. We’re told Old Hunstanton Beach is worth the 25-minute journey, but we choose to while away an hour or two at the local distillery, Whatahoot, instead.
MARCH 22

N O R FO L K | T R AV E L
Whatahoot is an award-winning distillery and gin school, set in a beautiful 15th century building in Kings Lynn (about seven miles away from the hotel). We gather on sofas with AJ, who talks us through the history of gin, and the brand, and why husband and wife team Nicky and Jason decided to set it up. “In the summer, Norfolk is beautiful,” AJ tells us. “But in the winter, everything closes – people need something to do.” And doing gin comes highly recommended. Whether you pop along for the distillery tour to learn all about how gin is made (£15), upgrade to a cheeky Cocktail Masterclass (£35) or go the whole hog and book into the four-hour gin school (£95, or £135 for two) where you make your own gin, you’re likely to wobble out with a big smile on your face. My lips feel like they’re bubbling with dryness as the alcohol warms my throat. For someone who’s not a fan of doing shots, I seem to be sampling the straight gins without any trouble at all. Fiery but smooth, each variety is really quite delicious, and even better when you add a splash of tonic.

Holiday plants you can grow at home... Hannah Stephenson suggests six foreign favourites to give your home a holiday feel. If you love botanical gardens and plant collections when you’re on holiday, why not bring that feelgood factor home by growing some of your far-flung favourites? Plant inspiration can come from all over the world – from South Africa and the Caribbean, to Japan and Southern Europe – and you can grow many of the plants you see on your holidays at home. What better way to spark those special memories and hopes of sunnier times… BELOW Protea flower | Alamy/PA
PROTEA A native of South Africa, along with agapanthus, restios, strelitzia (bird of paradise) and tulbaghia, the protea (the king protea – Protea cynaroides), is the national flower of South Africa. You can spot them growing wild on Table Mountain, but you can grow them here too. Treat them as an alpine but be aware they won’t behave as they do in their natural habitat, as they don’t like wetter, warmer winters. They are not hardy, but if you live in a mild area they should thrive in full sun and poor, acid soil, with plenty of air flow. In cooler locations, grow them in a well ventilated greenhouse or conservatory, as they don’t like damp, humid conditions and will soon die if you put them in waterlogged ground. With a little TLC, you should be rewarded with their unusual flowers surrounded by colourful bracts.

BOUGAINVILLEA Mediterranean countries are awash with this dazzling climber, which you see in shades ranging from shocking pink to peach and white, although the plant actually originated in Brazil. In this country, you’ll need to grow it in a sheltered spot, preferably a conservatory or greenhouse which is heated in winter, as it prefers warm, sunny conditions and won’t withstand frost. PRIDE OF MADEIRA (ECHIUM CANDICANS) Originating from Madeira, as its name suggests, this bushy, evergreen, biennial sub-shrub, which reaches around 1m high, bears majestic rosettes of hairy greygreen leaves and spikes of dazzling purple flowers from spring into summer. It’s also common in California, but if you find a sunny, sheltered spot closer to home, you may have success without a Californian climate. Plant it in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun at the back of a border or among cottage garden plants, or partner it with spiky palms and agaves in a sheltered, tropical scheme in full sun. In autumn, cut the spikes down and cover the plant with horticultural fleece to protect it from winter weather. LEFT Colourful bougainvillea and palms overlooking the sea
BELOW Pride of Madeira (Echium candicans) | Alamy/PA
PALM TREE We see them in so many hot countries, from the Caribbean to the Americas and beyond. Yet you too can enjoy a taste of the tropical if you choose specific palms, which are suitable for a UK climate. The most popular is the Chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), also known as the windmill palm, which originated in China but can easily be grown here. It has a single main stem bearing fan-shaped deep green leaves, with small clusters of yellow flowers appearing in summer followed by blue-black fruits from female plants. Keep them sheltered from cold, drying winds, and give them some protection in winter if you live in a cold area. Those with small spaces should ideally grow them in large pots in a warm, sheltered position, allowing you to bring them inside for winter.

RED CARNATION The red carnation, whose scientific name is Dianthus caryophyllus, is the National Flower of Spain and the Flower of the Balearic Islands, although there are many different varieties to choose from in everything from white to deep pink and multi-coloured types. Symbolising love, passion and historically religious zeal, locals use the red carnations extensively, at the front of borders and to provide a colourful addition in patio pots. They are perennials, relatively low-maintenance and should come back year after year. Grow them in free-draining neutral to alkaline soil enriched with compost or well rotted manure, deadhead regularly and feed them with fertiliser each spring.
FLOWERING CHERRY (PRUNUS) Anyone who’s visited Japan in spring could not fail to notice the dazzling cherry blossom, known as sakura, which this year is expected to arrive a couple of days early in its native country in March. The colourful display is a huge hanami (‘flower viewing’) attraction, while the cherry blossom season in the UK and Ireland typically starts towards the end of March, as clouds of billowing blossoms spring to life. Their blousy blooms may look fragile, but these trees are tough, surviving harsh Japanese winters and tolerating various soil types, although they prefer chalky (alkaline) soils, and do best in full sun, sheltered from strong winds to protect the blossom. There are plenty of choices, but the best include Prunus ‘Accolade’, which blooms in early spring, growing to a final height or around 8m, and Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’, which opens its pink flowers on bare stems throughout the winter. Celebrating blossom with the National Trust Nature has proved a huge source of comfort for many of us in recent years, and in spring the sight of fresh blossom on a warm spring day can be especially uplifting. In Japan, ‘Hanami’ or ‘flower viewing’ is all about enjoying the fleeting beauty of blossom trees as they come into bloom. This spring, join in the UK’s own blossom celebration in the run up to the National Trust’s #BlossomWatch day on 23 April 2022, when the conservation charity is inviting you to share your own pictures of blossom on social media. In Hampshire from March to May, National Trust gardens fill with displays of dainty cream and pink fruit and cherry blossom. In countryside hedgerows, in woods and on downland, blackthorn reveals sprays of tiny white flowers. Hawthorn closes the season with its highly scented clusters of white blossom. Blossoming trees are good for wildlife too. Their pollen provides essential food for insects, and in autumn their fruit is a feast for blackbirds, song thrushes and other birds, as well as mice, badgers and foxes.

Meeting with family or friends under a blossom tree is pure joy, and something everyone can do, from grandchildren to grandparents. Here’s where to spot blossom at National Trust places in Hampshire. For more information visit www.nationaltrust. org.uk/hampshire.
MARCH MOTTISFONT, NEAR ROMSEY Early spring also sees the flowering of Mottisfont’s magnificent white magnolia by the stables. In full bloom it makes a stunning backdrop for springtime selfies – you can get a lovely shot whilst seated on one of the benches lining the flint wall in front of the tree. White and pink-tinged sweetly scented crab apple blossom may also make an appearance at this time. There’s a wonderful 200 year old example on the north lawn, known as Napoleon’s crab apple. The flowers provide an important source of early pollen and nectar for insects. Out on the six mile estate walk hedgerows are littered with tight clusters of HINTON AMPNER, NEAR BRAMDEAN
white blackthorn blossom.
From late March, the pink double flowers of Japanese blossom variety ‘Kanzan’ begin to unfurl in Hinton’s little cherry orchard. Lemon-yellow narcissi, tiny bright blue anemone and chequered fritillaries litter the grass beneath the trees. Elegant large-petalled magnolias are also on show including fragrant white variety ‘Alba’. This year, ten new blossom trees have been planted on the east lawn, carefully chosen to complement former owner Ralph
Dutton’s

choices and including the richly scented white

‘Fragrant Cloud’. These are young trees and their displays will develop over the coming years.

THE VYNE, NEAR BASINGSTOKE There’s space in the heritage orchard here to picnic beneath old varieties of plum, pear and apple trees that reveal tiny cream and rich pink petals - a lovely way to while away the time on a warm spring day. In the historic walled garden clusters of white flowers appear on fruit trees decoratively trained against the old wall. Wander down the path to the wild garden where little ‘bird’ cherry trees produce displays of almond-scented white blossom.
M AY SANDHAM MEMORIAL CHAPEL, BURGHCLERE Fronting the chapel Sandham’s orchard of historic apple tree varieties, many of which are over 90 years old, burst into soft pink and white bloom. You can picnic under the blossom here, on benches close to the trees. Look out for spring wildflowers in the long grass and at the base of the hedges surrounding the orchard – delights like pink ragged robin, lilac snakeshead fritillary and yellow cowslip. Behind the chapel, young crab apple trees covered in tiny white bunches of blossom line the path through the garden.

STOCKBRIDGE DOWN, NEAR STOCKBRIDGE At this time of year you’re likely to see hawthorn blossom (also known as ‘May’) as soon as you walk through the little wooden gate on to this ancient site of chalk downland. Bursting out of hedges and in scrubby clumps, the clusters of scented white flowers cover the length of the tree’s branches and line the paths taking you to the top of this Iron Age hill fort and its panoramic views. Several hundred varieties of insect feed off hawthorn flowers, including many of Stockbridge Down’s native butterfly species such as the beautiful green hairstreak. In autumn the bright red berries feed birds, small mammals, even slow worms.

Take a peek at Europe’s most exciting new spa breaks Indulge in the latest wellness and beauty treatments at these nurturing retreats, says Sarah Marshall. There’s nothing quite like a spa session to plump up skin, preen tired bodies and revitalise exhausted souls. In the last few years, wellness has become a growing focus for many of us; we care more about the food we eat, the products we use and the way we treat our bodies. Finish DIY Projects Unfinished DIY jobs could be used as a potential bargaining tool to negotiate a lower price. Most buyers will be looking to just move in and will be reluctant to spend time or money completing your unfinished projects. Redecorate where necessary A neutrally decorated, well-presented house can add immense value to your asking price. Invest in fresh paint to brighten up high-traffic areas or rooms which are currently painted in a vivid colour that may not be to a buyer’s taste. Clean, clean, and clean again A sparkling, sweet-smelling house creates a good impression. Presentation Try to see your property through the eyes of a potential buyer. Take photographs of each room and then look at them objectively. It will become obvious what needs to change, whether it be decluttering or re-positioning furniture. During viewings turn the lights on, display vases of flowers, fresh fruit, and light scented candles. Kerb Appeal Ensure the exterior of the property looks well maintained and welcoming. Tidy the garden by sweeping up leaves, pruning shrubs and weeding beds, mow the lawns, hide the dust bins, and add seasonal colour with Spring planting in pots by your front door. Repaint the front door if necessary. Hallways and Entrances Allow potential viewers to literally “see” themselves in the house by placing a mirror in the hallway. Tidy away all coats, shoes, and bags to ensure it is clutter free.
Mentally Move Out This is the most important thing you can do. You have decided to move on so do all you can to achieve a quick and profitable sale. Don’t worry if

Preserving the legacy of successful business owners
Why do ethical business owners deserve to get paid well when selling a successful business? There are untold reasons why successful business owners who want to sell ethically, deserve to get paid well. Firstly, selling ethically means that you care about how well the new buyer is going to preserve your legacy. Meaning, you want to get paid well for selling your business, MOREOVER, you also want to ensure that your staff are looked after and the culture you have built over the years, along with your company name and location are maintained. All too often, a trade buyer will do whatever it takes to maximise profitability from acquiring your business. This often includes “streamlining the business”, such as making redundancies, moving the offices to lower cost locations, increasing prices to customers and cutting corners on quality and service level to your customers. Surely there is a better way? If you want to find out more about how we can help you contact Robbie Mair, 07900 555217 or you can visit www.K-ZenGroup.com.

However, if you prefer on trend Industrial or Scandinavian simplicity, let their staff show you the best way forward in kitchen design. They can also discuss finance options available too. INTERIORS | SEVENTIES INSPIRED
easy ways to work the Seventies trend at home...
Go groovy with your decor, says Sam Wylie-Harris. A decade defined by disco music, eye-catching prints, a colour scheme of browns, oranges and greens and shot of glamour for good measure, the Seventies certainly captured our attention. And we’re still feeling the love – so much so that designers continue to be inspired by the 1970s, reviving the look with a range of ideas to fire the imagination. There’s a sense of fun when we reconnect with this decade’s trademark palette of brights, as well as the feelgood factor of nature (house plants were one of the hottest trends at the time), and there’s good reason key pieces such as vintage chairs, lava lamps and eclectic homewares have never lost their appeal. Here’s how to rock the Seventies vibe at home… Play up patterns and prints “The 70Seventies was such a ground-breaking era in interior design and it still inspires us today,” says Rachael Doble, co-founder of Carmine Lake. “For an instant injection of Seventies glam, a feature wall in a 1970s-inspired design will score plenty of style points.

“Make sure it has a strong, distinctive print and a palette of browns, oranges and reds for maximum impact.” Abbas Youssefi, director of Porcelain Superstore, agrees: “Seventies interior style was all about statement patterns in strong, earthy colours. Meanwhile, Molly Pusey, vice-president of supply at Fy! describes the Seventies trend as bringing a touch of luxe and nostalgia, especially with a retro colour palette of terracotta orange, aqua tones and rich greens. “Opt for mid-century furniture pieces and add a contemporary edge with velvet textiles and contrasting textures,” says Pusey. “Finish with the warm glow of a mushroom lamp for a sense of vintage glamour.” It’s cool to colour-clash “The Seventies were defined by the bold sound of the funk era. The music was rich and brazen and really made you stop in your tracks to listen,” says Chris Bond, director at The Rug Retailer. “From an interiors perspective, for me 1970s style is all about capturing the excitement and confidence of the funk movement, so strong colours and shapes are an absolute must. And don’t be afraid of clashing hues too – the more the merrier.” Try mixing and matching your furniture, rather than sticking with variations of the same shade in a room. Volvo C40 When the House & Lifestyle team were asked to come and test the new fully electric Volvo C40 we were all pretty excited, not only is this SUV extremely fast reaching 60mph in 4.7 seconds it also offers a range of 273 miles between charges and only takes 37 minutes to give you 192 miles of charge. The C40 takes its technical basics from the XC40 Recharge, a model also 100% electric. However, the C40 Recharge is not just a copy of the XC40 Recharge, on the contrary, it differs from it in several ways. With this model, Volvo confirms and reinforces its plans for fully electric models. According to the manufacturer’s forecasts, electric vehicles should represent 50% of its product mix by 2025 and 100% by 2030. Interestingly, the headlights are changing, and not just Volvo returns with the letter C with its C40, a rather sporty

conditions for optimum efficiency. In addition to its engine which makes it a future proofed ecological car, Volvo has taken this concept of respect for the environment a little further with the absence of leather upholstery inside the vehicle. The

communication system based on the Android operating system, jointly developed with Google and integrated with services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play Store. Updates can also be done remotely. The C40 we tested has two electric motors, the twin charging system, each based on an axle, making it an SUV with four-wheel drive, there is also a two-wheel drive option available. The power is 408 hp, enough to go from 0 to 60 mph in the space of 4.7 seconds. A good performance for a machine where its mass exceeds two tons. On the battery side, we find a set providing a capacity of 75 kWh, enough to offer the C40 a range of

about 273 miles with a single charge. This is equivalent to Poole to Southampton and back four times. Or even Poole to Ringwood twelve times if you wanted to think more local! We found driving the C40 Recharge refreshingly uncomplicated. There are no drive modes to choose from, just forward, neutral, and reverse. The low centre of gravity and the car’s massive and immediate torque mean it will shock most other cars on the road if necessary. On top of that our heated seats and heated steering wheel helped warm the cockles on a very damp and wintery day. All in all we loved it, and it didn’t stop there. The showroom at Volvo Cars Poole is exceptional. All the latest models gleam in the brightly lit and comfortable lounge area. The top Volvo models invite you to sit inside for that new car smell and interior comfort. The staff are very friendly and were on hand to answer any questions you have so we recommend you pop down and have a look yourself. Don’t forget to flick through your latest issue of House & Lifestyle whilst you are there!

M OTO R I N G N E WS Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
S P I R I T O F E C S TA S Y R E D E S I G N E D F O R M O S T A E R O DY N A M I C R O L L S - R OYC E E V E R Rolls-Royce has redesigned its iconic Spirit of Ecstasy figurine to grace the bonnet of its new all-electric Spectre model, 111 years since the Spirit of Ecstasy was first registered as intellectual property of RollsRoyce on 6th February 1911.
The most visible change is her stance. Previously, she has stood with her feet together, legs straight and tilting at the waist. Now, she is a true goddess of speed, braced for the wind, one leg forward, body tucked low, her eyes focused ahead.
The figurine has been remodelled with a lower, more dynamic stance that brings her much closer to the drawings made by her original creator, the illustrator and sculptor Charles Sykes, in the early years of the 20th century.
While all figurines are made using one of the oldest known casting techniques, named ‘lost wax casting’ or ‘cire-perdue’, each is individually finished by hand, so will be minutely different from figurine to figurine. Until 1939, the mascots were made and polished by Charles Sykes himself.
The new Spirit of Ecstasy stands 3.2 inches tall, compared to her predecessor’s 3.9 inches. Her robes, which flow behind her in the slipstream – often but erroneously characterised as ‘wings’ – have been subtly reshaped to make them more aerodynamic and realistic.
MARCH 22
Though relatively rare in the modern era, changes to the Spirit of Ecstasy have been made throughout her 111-year lifespan. She has been rendered in various sizes and materials and, briefly, in a kneeling position.

ROAD TEST: FO R D K U GA – A S MART AN D S M O OTH VI S UAL PR ES EN C E With ever more new models being launched the demand for SUVs continues. However, it’s easy to forget that some of the long familiar names in SUV world have also been transformed. Ford’s Kuga has been a familiar sight since 2008, indeed before that the Kuga name (spelt Cougar) was attached to a coupe, and you see many older Kugas still looking good. The very latest Kuga has a refreshingly smart and smooth visual presence compared to many of the overly aggressive looking newer entrants. Think of the Kuga like a grown up Ford Puma, which when I tested it had many people thinking it had stylistic echo’s of Porsche’s Cayenne. Praise indeed! Prices for the Kuga start from £27,895 with standard equipment including sliding rear seats, navigation, Car Play and Android auto plus powered and heated door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, air conditioning, cruise, rear privacy glass and a heated windscreen. The two engine options are a 1.5-litre EcoBoost with 6-speed manual gearbox or, the pick of the duo in my book, a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid with CVT automatic
transmission. You can have either a selfcharging or plug-in hybrid with 190 PS and 225 PS respectively. In plug-in mode the Kuga will cover around 30-35 miles (in the real world) on pure electric, the full hybrid can utilise electric power automatically, such as at low speed, and assist the petrol engine to avoid using excessive combustion power. An ST-Line X Edition was my test model and priced at £38,005, in addition to that hybrid power it gains significantly more standard equipment such as LED lights, hands-free powered tailgate, parking camera, climate control, keyless entry and start along with subtle styling adornments including red brake calipers.
139
On the road the Kuga is as smooth as it flowing lines, and unless pushed hard the CVT gearbox doesn’t cause much of an audible ruffle – it is a trait of these boxes to raise the revs thereby increasing cabin noise - and changes smoothly. For a large SUV the Kuga handles well despite its taller stance and weighty battery pack, thanks to a comfortably stiffened sports suspension and excellent steering feel. Inside there is rather more ‘scratchy’ hard plastic than one would like, but a welcome presence of buttons and a logical layout with clear displays are big plus points. The driving ‘feel’ just adds further to the Kuga’s already appealing presence.

In terms of performance, battery and range, the ENYAQ Coupé iV vRS is fitted with an 82kWh battery pack and has a driving range of up to 309 miles. The vRS is equipped with twin motors – one on either axle – that the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 111mph. The ENYAQ Coupé can be rapid DC charged at speeds of up to 135kW via a CCS connector. This means an 80% charge can
be achieved is as little as 36 minutes when connected to a 150kW charger or faster. On a standard 7.2kW home wallbox, a charge from empty to full will take around 13 hours. It’s equipped as standard with a sports chassis that is 15mm lower at the front and 10mm at the rear. Dynamic steering is also standard on vRS models. The first UK deliveries expected by the end of July. Further derivatives of the ENYAQ Coupé iV will follow after the market introduction of the vRS model.
NEW PERFORMANCE GT FROM RML RML is a British high performance automotive engineering company. Its new two-seat, high-performance GT has a lightweight, carbon-composite body paying homage to the driving purity of supercars from the past, while offering 21st-century comfort and convenience. Features like its stacked rear lights, exposed fuel filler, chip-cutter front grille and vents appearing behind each wheel and on the bonnet have all been carefully reimagined. Powered by a 5.5-litre Ferrari V12 engine, allied to a manual six-speed gearbox, the Short Wheelbase integrates a raft of discreet modern features which transform it into a fast and usable GT with classic lines.
Achieving the paintwork’s rich lustre involves layers of special carbon primer, regular primer and a silver base coat that gives this first Short Wheelbase’s as yet un-named blue colour a real ‘pop’. There’s a ‘no-plastic’ mantra on the interior with every switch, button and clock being bespoke, and developed in-house. Everything you can see and touch in the

ROAD TEST: K IA N I RO H E V There are a number of car makers offering a single model with self-charging hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric powertrains. For those not yet convinced to go fully electric then self-charging hybrids are the most practical, with no range anxieties and no plug-in issues. The UK government’s lamentable indecision on what hybrid vehicles can continue to be sold after 2030, when conventionally powered new car sales will be banned, means we have no idea what will be available to buyers. So if full electric is not a practical proposition, and for many it certainly isn’t, then you have a limited time to make your mind up.
powered cars. That will hopefully come down as 2030 looms closer. You certainly get plenty of standard equipment for your money with Kia. The Niro’s extensive list includes alloy wheels, 10.25” touchscreen, navigation, Apple Car Play, Android Auto and Bluetooth, reversing camera, smart cruise, auto dimming rear view mirror, auto lights and wipers and rear privacy. With a raised ride height the Niro lacks the boxiness of some designs and has the usual Kia feeling of quality and solidity of build
One of the most popular cars with multiple eco options is Kia’s Niro, with prices starting from £25,705 for the self-charging hybrid, £31,065 for the plug-in version and £32,895 for full electric. Buyers will find, not just with Kia but all car makers, that any kind of hybrid or electric model comes at a price premium over conventionally
on both the exterior and interior. There’s a good range of adjustment for both the driver and passengers with plenty of space in terms of both leg and head room. Power switches between petrol and electric automatically, or even uses both, with selectable driving modes. The dual clutch automatic gearbox is one of the better systems being smooth and lacks overtly racing engine revs and lag, unless under hard acceleration. The Niro acquits itself well for this type of car and is pretty refined too with decent rather than exceptional performance, but economy and emissions figures are good. Overall the Niro is transport, more than any kind of motoring inspired nirvana, and none the worse for it. If you had to be in your car everyday then the Niro is a nice place to be whether for work, family or both. It offers all the creature comforts you need for long days behind the wheel.

REC HARG ED AN D ELECTRIF YIN G: THE CLASSIC MINI L AU N C H ES I N TO THE FUTURE The MINI Recharged project is one that means a vehicle’s life can be extended in a sustainable way. A classic Mini can now be given a new lease of life whilst maintaining its much-loved heritage. The drive is a modern electric motor that generates a continuous output of up to 90 kW and accelerates the electrified classic Mini from zero to 62 mph in approximately nine seconds. The energy is supplied by a highvoltage battery which enables a predicted range of around 100 miles. In addition, every electrified classic Mini from MINI Recharged receives the characteristic central instrument cluster, which now displays the drive temperature, the selected gear, range and speed. With a silent drivetrain, instant acceleration and the ability to enter the electric or lowemission driving zones of many large cities, otherwise inaccessible or at a cost, with a combustion engine it offers a classic electric drive. For example, the electric classic Mini can drive in Oxford Street or Piccadilly Circus in London, without the driver having to pay congestion charge. In addition, the classic conversion does not need a new registration. Today, one in five new MINI models has an electrified drive. Now, the MINI Recharged project will allow the brand’s classic vehicles to become a useable experience of the future. The bespoke upcycling of the classic Mini is carried out exclusively in the United Kingdom. Each converted vehicle is given an individual number, making it unique.
R O A D T E S T: H O N D A C I V I C E X – A FA M I LY C A R T H AT ’ S A S TA N D O U T FOR ALL THE RIGHT RE ASONS Mention the Honda Civic and most people who know their cars will immediately start talking about the iconic Type R. For those who don’t know their Hondas that’s the bonkers one with the mad spoiler on the back. There are a couple of other less bonkers versions but also a very decent array of more workaday models that still offer great performance. Most of the ‘standard’ range use a 1.0-litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with either manual or CVT automatic transmission. My EX mid-range Civic utilised the 1.0-litre with CVT transmission. With six trim levels, the top two use a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit, prices start from £22,590 and there’s a decent level of standard equipment even on the lead-in version. This includes climate, auto lights and wipers, powered and heated door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise and Bluetooth. Priced at £28,465 my EX trim had heated front and rear seats, keyless entry and start, adaptive damping, wireless charging, leather, auto dimming mirror, panoramic opening glass roof and LED headlights. The Civic is a bit of a marmite car on the looks front with lots of angles and an overtly muscular style.
MARCH 22

There’s plenty of space for both occupants plus their luggage and provides a very comfortable environment. Previous Civics had a rather eccentric dash with two levels, things are more ordered now, and much better for it. It’s sensibly laid out without the rather minimalist, arguably boring, look of some rivals. The central touchscreen is a little on the small side but even so is clear and the instruments as a whole, and the driver instrument cluster with a central digital speedometer is a lesson in clarity. Try and find the phone USB socket though and you’ll struggle, it’s too well hidden behind the centre console and a bit too much of a faff to reach. Predictably the Civic handles extremely well and the 7-speed CVT automatic transmission is a smooth and quick shifting affair, one of the better CVTs. Road noise can be quite loud on rougher surfaces and if you push the Civic it has a suitably sporting engine note. With striking looks, decent equipment and a good drive, not to mention my test car being in a rather striking shade of blue, makes the Civic an ordinary family car that is different to the norm, a standout for all the right reasons.

ROAD TEST: S E AT TER R AC O – A C L AS SY, S PAC I O U S AN D G EN ERO U S LY EQ U I PPED FAM I LY H O LDALL Motorists of a certain age might recall the days when we had the Morris Oxford and Austin Cambridge, cars named after places. SEAT has taken to the same idea with the Tarraco, the largest of their SUVs, it’s named after the Spanish city of Tarragona. Apparently, Tarraco is what the city was called when Rome ruled this part of Spain. The range comprises of six trim levels with both petrol and diesel power along with manual and DSG automatic gearboxes. The 1.5-litre TSi petrol engine comes in 150PS while the 4-wheel-drive option comes with a 2.0-litre petrol unit in 190PS and 245PS power outputs. The 2.0-litre diesel develops either 150PS or 200PS. Standard equipment across the range includes 7-seats, cornering lights, LED lights, powered, folding, heated mirrors, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, keyless start and Apple Car Play and Android Auto plus Bluetooth.
A rather different - and welcome - approach to the usual rather brutish, huge-grilled look of many SUVs the Terraco’s sharp styling looks classy and understated, and as ever with VAG products there’s a feeling of quality throughout, both exterior and interior. The Tarraco looks smaller and less intimidating thanks to that subtle styling but the result is a capacious family holdall that mixes a touch of style while getting on with things in a world where reaching the school gates in time is more important than playing grand prix wannabe.
There’s plenty of space inside and even the rearmost seats are fine for an adult on short journeys. My test car had the benefit of an, admittedly not cheap, £1015 optional panoramic roof, but it makes the interior superbly light and airy. The range starts at £30,785 and my FR Sport was £42,990 with 4-wheel-drive, DSG automatic gearbox, 2.0-litre diesel power developing 200PS and riding on 20” ‘Cosmo’ Grey machined alloy wheels. With its sporting credentials the performance is pretty decent with 62 mph reached in just under 8 seconds. Considering its size the FR Sport handles remarkably well with little body roll thanks to firmer suspension. It’s not at the expense of ride comfort though. Unfortunately, as with most VAG products there is an increasing amount of digitalisation instead of more practical and easier to use switches. That said, time would soon bring familiarity and there is much to like in the Terraco. It’s classy, spacious, generously equipped and makes a fine family holdall.

Tremendous service
"Saxe Coburg made selling our home a hassle and stress free experience. Lynn and Lesley were very professional and communicative. They provided great, no nonsense advice and guidance throughout the sale process. They made viewings convenient for us and handled all of the behind the scenes queries and communications with the buyers and legal teams with ease. We would highly recommend them and look forward to working with them again future! Big thanks to the Saxe Coburg team!"
"Unbelievable service! I have never seen such tenacity in getting a deal done. This transaction was thwarted with so many complications but both Lesley and Lynn were absolute stars in pushing this along. If I ever need to sell property again they will definitely be my first and only choice. I don’t think I can endorse them highly enough."
