THE BETTER BLIND COMPANY

better choicePlantation The ultimate window cover

The Shade and Shutter Company

Installing window blinds is one of the easiest and most effective ways to instantly change the appearance of a room in your home. However, why should you choose blinds over other options like curtains? Whether you want to install blinds for practical or aesthetic reasons, here are five key advantages of installing window blinds in your home. 1. Control the Light Entering the Room Window blinds provide you with more control over the amount of light entering the room because you can cover the entire window or just part of the window according to your own needs. For example, the slats on some window blinds are fitted so tightly together that they do not allow any light in at all. This could be ideal for a room where you have a home theatre or in your bedroom where you don’t want any light to wake you up in the morning. 2. Countless Styles, Colours, & Patterns Window blinds come in an endless variety of styles, colours, and patterns, allowing you to create the perfect look in your kitchen, living room, or bathroom. Choose from mini blinds, vertical blinds, roman blinds, and even cordless blinds, which are safer for children and pets as well as being very elegant.

3. Wide Variety of Materials The variety of materials that blinds come in allows you to choose the blind that is most suitable for you in terms of both price and style. For example, if your living room contains wooden furniture, you can complement the room by installing wooden blinds. However, if you find wooden blinds too expensive, you can opt for faux wood instead to keep the costs down. You then have plastic blinds, bamboo blinds, aluminium blinds, and other materials to choose from to ensure that you can always find the right blinds for any room in your home. 4. Enjoy Complete Privacy Blinds provide you with a level of privacy that you cannot get from many other options such as curtains. For the ultimate in privacy control, consider installing top-down shades. Using these, you can lower the shade from the top so that the natural light can come in, but you can still enjoy as much privacy as you require. 5. Easy to Maintain Finally, one of the best things about window blinds is that they are typically very easy to maintain. In fact, many blinds simply require a quick wipe with

a damp cloth from time to time to remove the dust. Compare this to curtains, which need to be washed every once in a while, and blinds start to look like the most convenient option. In addition, they are also long lasting, especially blinds made from wood or aluminium, meaning you won’t have to replace them until you decide you are ready for a change.

Find the Perfect Blinds for Your Home Whatever style you have in mind for the rooms in your home, consider installing window blinds. Not only can they become a unique feature of the room, but they also don’t have to cost the earth. In fact, they can often be cheaper to buy and install than curtains, especially if you choose an option like faux wood instead of real wood. So have a look online or in the store next time you go shopping and try to find the perfect window blinds for your home.

BBC unveil unseen footage of the Queen in documentary featuring engagement A BBC documentary featuring never-before-seen footage of the Queen taken from her personal archive will include clips of the monarch beaming at her engagement ring – months before the announcement was made public.

The Queen granted the BBC unprecedented access

The home movies, which had been held privately by the Royal Collection in the vaults of the British Film Institute (BFI), capture the Queen’s life from being pushed in a pram by her mother to her coronation in 1953. The

documentary,

titled

Elizabeth: The Unseen Queen, captures the first extended visit of Prince Philip to Balmoral in 1946 while the couple’s engagement was still not public. It depicts a beaming Princess Elizabeth showing the camera her engagement ring.

How to turn your garden into a spa sanctuary Take inspiration from Chelsea designer Kate Gould’s ultra-zen creation. Imagine the setting – a cornucopia of tropical planting shadowing a hidden oasis of calm, replete with hot tub, comfortable loungers, subtle lanterns and tea lights dotted around, and the scent of jasmine in the air. This might seem like an unrealistic aspiration of how to create the perfect garden sanctuary, especially if you have a small space. But if you’re able to include just a few of these features in your outdoor space – which all star in

Use subtle lighting “You can light the canopy beautifully, because all those plants light beautifully at night. Really simple uplighters are very effective at lighting trees and don’t necessarily cost the earth. You also don’t have to see them,” says Gould. “Then you have decorative lights like standard lamps and lanterns, floor-mounted objects which look amazing and you can just layer it up. The only thing you really want is to make sure, if you are using electrics, is that somebody qualified installs it for you.” Consider an outdoor shower On hot, balmy summer days or nights, an open-air shower might be just the ticket – but get a professional to install it for you. Create privacy by sheltering it with plants, Gould suggests. Make cosy seating areas “This has changed over the years. If you have a large area and can really customise it, you could make it long and low and really comfortable with cushions. But remember you will have to put the cushions away in the winter,” says Gould. “Otherwise, there are many other lovely furniture options to choose from. Modular sofas can be assembled in the configuration you want [and many] come with waterproof covers.

“Spas tend to want to be relaxing, so if you choose colours which uplift you, such as reds and yellows, you’d probably avoid those. Go with gentle blues, greys and greens because that will also reflect the planting.” What about water? With Covid, more people are investing in their gardens, which means they might put in a swim spa – a large jacuzzi with a current in it which you can swim against – says Gould, whose Chelsea garden will be incorporating one of these. “The spa becomes not only something you can sit in for relaxation, but you can exercise in it,” she notes. “Water’s like Marmite – you either love it or hate it. If you have a spa, you can get in it and sit there in the bubbles, and maybe drink bubbles when you’re in it. Alternatively, a still pool of water can reflect. “But you could equally have a sculpture or a firepit, which is less to maintain and might aesthetically fit the garden and doesn’t necessarily need the upkeep that a water feature would.”

Scent-sational plants “The

is

(trachelospermum), which has lovely glossy evergreen foliage which flowers in the winter. You could also have Christmas box. If you have lots of pots and a bit of sunshine, you could plant pittosporum, which smells like holidays,” says Gould. “You probably wouldn’t want to mix your messages, so if you are going down a leafy, tropical theme, you are not going to want to put lavender in.” Words by Hannah Stephenson, PA

TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR

Our claims service

MANDIE THAKE, Lettings Manager at Fleur Lettings answers this question from a Landlord

What can I reasonably expect of my Tenants? We think that the judgement of Lord Justice Denning

What matters most is how claims are handled and how you’re looked after.

in the case of Warren v Keen in 1953, whilst now nearly 70 years ago, clearly explains this.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated account handler for your claim, meaning you can maintain clear communication with a single point of contact, who will provide continuity throughout the claims process. A-One enjoys exceptional, long-standing relationships with insurers, which coupled with our world class customer service standards means your claim is dealt with swiftly and with a positive outcome. However, in the event of dispute, delay or other distraction, our claims specialists have the knowledge and experience to fight your corner and provide you with even greater peace of mind.

In his judgement, Lord Justice Denning stated “The tenant must take proper care of the place. He must, if he is going away for the winter, turn off the water … He must mend the electric light when it fuses. He must unstop the sink when it is blocked by his waste. In short, he must do the little jobs about the place which a reasonable Tenant would do. In addition, he must, of course, not damage the house, wilfully or negligently; and he must see that his family and guests do not damage it: and if they do, he must repair it. But apart from such things, if the house falls into disrepair through fair wear and tear or lapse of time or for any reason not caused by him, then the Tenant is not liable to repair it.” At Fleur Lettings we encourage our Landlord’s Tenants to communicate any issues quickly and openly to us, so that they can be resolved before they become major problems, and by doing this we often save our Landlords some repair bills! The importance of updating your will regularly

Which? magazine estimates that as many as 60% of adults in the UK do not have a valid will in place. Research from Solicitors for the Elderly highlights that 47% people haven’t updated their will in over five years. This means that nearly half of wills in the UK are out of date and over half of the population do not have a will at all. Making a will is one of the most important yet underutilised estate planning tools that everyone should have in place, even if a person does not consider that they have any possessions or money to give. Below are some of the risks to those who have not

ADAM SCOT T

made a will: • If a person dies without having made a will then the distribution of their estate will be dictated by a certain set of legal rules, known as the intestacy rules. These rules may not reflect how the assets are wished to be distributed upon death. Parliament could also change these rules at any time, without notice. • If a couple are not married or have not entered into a registered civil partnership, when one dies, the surviving partner will receive nothing, potentially leading to significant financial hardship.

JUNE 22

T R E T H O WA N S | TA L K I N G B U S I N E S S

• If spouses or civil partners are separating and one should die during that process then unless a will has been made directing otherwise, the majority of the deceased’s estate will transfer to their spouse or civil partner. • A will can indicate those persons that should become guardians of any minor children to prevent arguments between the family should both parents die. • If you have significant assets then not having a will in place could lead to an unnecessary inheritance tax burden.

“I would like to thank you for an incredible result reached and the support given to my family.”

This is why the Bahamas were given a royal seal of approval Following in the (barefoot) steps of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Ed Elliot explores the beach and sun paradise. “When they came to The Bahamas, we told them: ‘Hey, you saved the best till last’,” recounts Marcus with a smile. “We rolled out the red carpet for them.” Negotiating the compact streets of downtown Nassau, the engaging taxi driver provides a brief background of the nation’s capital, before crossing Sidney Poitier Bridge to Paradise Island, and stopping outside The Cove hotel. His remarks refer to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who stayed here during the final leg of their Caribbean tour to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in March this year.

While the royal couple had limited time for recreation during their whirlwind two-night visit – which followed stays in Belize and Jamaica – regular guests are spoilt for choice. Based on the mythical lost city, Atlantis is a colossal water paradise primed for both relaxation and adventure. Sharks, stingrays and sea turtles are among 50,000 lagoon-dwelling marine creatures dotted across a thrill-seekers playground, which is surrounded by five miles of beaches and home to 11 pools, a 141-acre water park, nightclub, casino, golf course and more than 20 restaurants. Unsurprisingly, it is a celebrity hotspot. Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie are just a handful of those who feature on the list of previous clientele, while I find multi-million pound super yachts permanently docked in the mega resort’s marina. The waterfront location is the setting for my first genuine taste of Bahamian culture – an experience similar to one enjoyed by the royals on Bay Street in the heart of Nassau.

An absence of crimson-coloured floor covering confirms I have arrived too late to catch a glimpse of William and Kate. Yet I receive a royal welcome of my own as I enter a tranquil, open-sided lobby and follow in their footsteps by wandering along marble corridors surrounded by elegant cichlid ponds. The Cove, opened in 2007, is the most opulent of five hotels within the sprawling Atlantis resort, sister property to Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai. Several floors down from the penthouse recently occupied by the royals, I check in to one of the 600 suites and am greeted with glorious views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Rumbling goat-skin drums, clanking cow bells and whistles signal the arrival of a frenetic cascade of feathered headdresses and elaborate costumes. The vibrant street parade is Junkanoo – a joyous national celebration dating back more than 200 years and celebrated most fervently on Boxing Day and at New Year. Brass instruments contribute heavily to the carnival atmosphere, with the passionate parping of a solitary sousaphone player stealing the limelight. “Junkanoo to us Bahamians is like the biggest thing ever,” explains Kool Aid, Atlantis’s eccentric brand ambassador, as he guides me around the resort a few days later. I’ve never seen anybody, including our royals, stand up straight and watch – you feel the bass on your chest, it gets in you.” The Commonwealth country – located north of Cuba and a stone’s throw from the south-east tip of Florida – is an archipelago of 700 islands. A nine-hour flight from London, it is home to approximately 400,000 people and was a British crown colony from 1718 until The Duke and Duchess’ recent sojourn included a trip to

independence in 1973.

the Abaco Islands in the north of the country. For guests eager to join them in exploring the surrounding areas – known to Bahamians as the ‘family islands’, Atlantis has teamed up with Coco Bahama Seaplanes, to launch trips with a touch of glamour. I board the inaugural scenic flight from Nassau to Kamalame Cay (pronounced ‘key’) on the nation’s largest landmass, Andros. Shortly after take off, it is initially difficult to distinguish where sea and sky meet. Shadows created by wispy, cotton wool-esque balls of cloud then begin to pockmark a kaleidoscopic expanse of water, which is home to one of the world’s largest barrier reefs, and ranges in colour from enticing blues and greens to mustard yellow and milk white. A cruising altitude of around 3,800 feet allows me to pick out a pair of languid eagle rays from above, just before the eight-seater Cessna Caravan circles one final time. “I hope everyone’s ready to get their feet wet,” warns co-pilot Cole as we splash down with a light thud. “You don’t get that with Delta Air Lines!”

Paddling ashore, it is instantly clear that the privatelyowned destination is the antithesis of Atlantis. Golf buggies allow visitors to access some 97 acres of flowering jungle and deserted stretches of white sand. After driving barefoot along winding trails, I jump aboard a speedboat to gain a different perspective on my new surroundings, before later sitting down for a beach lunch of blackened mahi mahi, red snapper, and avocado ice cream, disturbed only by the gentle hum of further propeller-assisted arrivals. It is tempting to linger longer among the hammocks and coconut palm groves, but the time quickly comes to make the return hop east, a journey of roughly 15 minutes. Back in Nassau – which is situated on the country’s most populous island, New Providence – I am persuaded to follow the Duchess’ lead in trying a seafood delicacy. Rumoured to be an aphrodisiac, conch (‘konk’) pistol is commonly said to be the male genitalia of the eponymous sea snails which dwell in pink and orange shells, and are ubiquitous in this part of the world.

Forests to get lost in this summer If you go down to the woods today, you won’t believe your eyes, says Sam Wylie-Harris. Forests are a lifeline. Super fertile and vital to our ecosystem, they flourish under the watchful eye of Mother Nature and reward us in so many ways when they’re managed sustainably. They purify the air we breathe, provide safe habitats for all manner of wildlife and animals, are part of the livelihoods of millions of people around the world, cushion climate change and connect us to the wondrous beauty of the great outdoors. Looking for some forest inspiration? Whether for a visit in person, or simply to admire from afar, here are five fab forests we’d love to explore… Tahoe National Forest, California, USA A wilderness made up of Sugar pines, Douglas firs and Ponderosa pines to name but a few, the Tahoe National Forest is northwest of Lake Tahoe and soars above the lake’s west shore, Emerald Bay. Mind-blowingly beautiful and a National Natural Landmark, this freshwater lake borders California and Nevada and the best way to admire the vista is from Inspiration Point, which sits 183-metres above the water.

Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica Situated between the majestic Tilarán and Guanacaste mountain ranges, the Arenal Volcano is active – so here’s your chance to explore the Costa Rican rainforest as well as trekking through volcanic trails and lava beds. Cited as an ecological paradise, Arenal Volcano National Park offers waterfalls, fascinating wildlife including white-faced monkeys and keel-billed toucans, hot springs and the chance to hike the Cerro Chato, an extinct volcano with the promise of a topaz coloured lake when you’ve conquered its peak. Not sure where to start? Adventure travel company Flash Pack (flashpack.com) specialise in tailored trips to Costa Rica and do all the hard work for you.

Options include explore the hiking trails, and there’s even the opportunity to camp among the tall pines (there are designated campgrounds). Or you can always take to the road and journey through the forest through one of the highways. The New Forest, England You only have to head to the south coast of England to immerse yourself in The New Forest – voted the number one national park in Europe in the 2022 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for Destinations. Located conveniently close to the coast dotted with sandy beaches, you can explore the woods, heathlands, rivers and wildflower meadows by foot or bike, with more than 100 miles of cycle paths. Teeming with ponies roaming freely among the forest, getting into the saddle and horse riding is one of the biggest attractions – but with a variety of water sports, golfing, fishing and nature based activities too, there’s something for everyone.

Sagano Bamboo Forest, Japan A stunning retreat on the outskirts of Kyoto, Japan’s Sagano Bamboo Forest is a haven for appreciating the beauty of bamboo – a place that takes you to another world where bamboo stalks tower above you, and sunlight streams through with the soothing sound of swaying stalks whispering in the wind. A densely packed grove with paths and trails, you can also explore the surrounding tree-covered hills and mountains, shrines, historic temples, zen gardens and photogenic tea fields. El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico Tropical rainforests can be a real challenge, but with family-friendly trails at a little under 1km long, or actionpacked adventure if you’re after greater rewards, the El Yunque National Forest is a goldmine for anyone who wants to get to the heart of a diverse ecosystem. Home to hundreds of rare plant and animal species, including Puerto Rico’s coqui frog – with special toe pads instead of webbed feet to climb and cling to trees and leaves – ziplining through the green canopies is ranked as one of the highlights, not to mention cooling off in the countless waterfalls. Burley Lifestyle is a perfectly formed interiors and gifts shop (all be it small) which stretches over two floors and is located at the edge of Burley Village in the New Forest, just opposite the entrance to the Burley Manor Hotel. The shop supports several local artisans such as award-winning artists; Sandra Binney, Penny Driscoll, Paula Mitchell - as seen on TV’s Landscape Artist of the Year and Susan Jeneson. Originals and limited-edition prints adorn the walls and greeting cards are available of some of the artists most favoured works. Each artist contributes a different vibe and style for an array of its customers’ homes. Perfumes and scented candles are available from two award winning perfume-tiers; Sarah Ireland Perfume and Connock London, both of whom are Hampshire based locals. Other gorgeous goodies in the shop such as stunning handmade all-season faux flower wreaths and silk flower arrangments, hand-crafted silver jewellery by Gem Freeman. How to make a style statement with mirrors, whatever your budget Looking glass is a luxury for less, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Mirrors are magnificent. Whether it’s checking the way you look, making a room seem bigger or brightening a whole space, they really are essential in the home. “More than ever, shoppers are adorning their walls with statement mirrors that bring light and space into their homes,” says Dayna Isom Johnson, trend expert for Etsy (etsy.com) online marketplace. “Embodying both form and function, statement mirrors allow shoppers to express their creativity,” says Johnson, “while also upgrading their selfie games.” She says asymmetrical mirrors are especially on the rise, as shoppers look to add pops of personality to their spaces. Think free-form, distorted angles and bean shapes beaming back at you. As Lucy Mather, interiors expert at luxury home and interiors retailer Arighi Bianchi puts it: “Mirrors are an interior designer’s secret weapon, and sometimes it’s easy for homeowners to forget just what an impact a well-placed mirror can have – both from a design and functional perspective.” Here’s how to bounce the light, frame those furnishings and show your best face….

Take visual illusions into account Mather says the same rule can be applied for adding texture to a space. “A mirror which reflects back a piece of rustic furniture, tactile cushions or throw, will create the illusion of added texture, creating interesting spatial illusions and reflecting your design details around the room. “Meanwhile, placing a mirror in an entertaining space will make your dinner parties and soirees feel bigger than they actually are,” suggests Mather. Not only will a well-placed mirror make your room look bigger, lighter and more interesting, as Mather points out, they’re also pieces of art in their own right: “From large leaning mirrors to small mirrored accessories – consider what role they have to play as part of your design aesthetic.”

Think about what you want to see in the mirror “One of the most crucial considerations you need to take into account when making a statement mirror part of your design is what you want it to reflect,” says Mather. “This could be bringing in more natural light and greenery – in which case, you should hang your mirror opposite or adjacent to a window,” suggests Mather. “Or, you may want to give an added dimension to a design feature in your space.” For example, she says a mirror hung on the mantelpiece opposite your sofa will reflect the space behind you that you don’t get to see when sat down. “If you have artwork or a statement wall, then it will reflect it back to you,” observes Mather. “Making it visible, even when you have your back to it.”

The more mirrors the merrier For maximum impact, why not consider a feature wall of mirrors? Especially if you’ve collected a few over the years or have some flea market finds gathering dust. Jenna Choate, co-founder of Interior Fox says grouping mirrors together creates a feeling of more space and allows the light to bounce around the room. “Using mirrors that vary in size will elevate the scheme and create a point of interest in the room,” says Choate. “This technique works especially well on large open walls like the living room, a narrow hallway or over a table,” she continues. “Choose a mirror that echoes the aesthetic of the room, for example, a sleek metallic frame works well in a more modern home, while a light wood frame would suit a Scandi scheme, or rustic style for a more traditional home.” When hanging the mirror, Choate says proportions are key. “Allow enough distance between the ceiling and furniture, and if grouping, there should be equal space between each mirror.” Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

Of course for some people who are not ‘into’ cars it’s a decision of practicality, cost and other sensible, more tangible reasons. What if you are producing more everyday motoring fare and trying to separate your cars from the rest of the market? Well you could take a leaf out of Honda’s book as a lot of their range is aimed at more

At low or modest acceleration levels the HRV retains a refined air, but exercise your right foot and the CVT automatic gearbox creates quite a din while it holds the revs and the speed catches up. It may not last long but is out of kilter with the HRV’s otherwise refined ambience. Moderating your driving style helps but at some point you will require that push of power and endure the vocals that come with it. The HRV is one of the nicest mainstream cars I have driven and will doubtless, as Hondas do, perform faultlessly for years. If you want your daily drive with comfort, a dose of practicality and plenty of toys, then the HRV could be for you.

Exercises to trim your waist and make you feel super strong

With new guidance saying our waist measurement shouldn’t be more than half our height, Imy Brighty-Potts asks experts how we can tone our midriff. New guidance has us thinking about our waistlines. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) says adults with a body mass index under 35 should ensure their waist measurement is less than half their height. For example, if you are 5ft 5in, you might want your waist to be 32.5 inches or less. This isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all approach as we all carry weight differently, but it could be a good starting point. People who have more weight in their middle can be more likely to struggle with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. A slim waist alone is not necessarily enough to ensure you are fit and healthy, but putting more effort into exercise and a healthy diet is no bad thing. If you have any concerns about your health and fitness, speak to your doctor.

or a high-low plank [where you move between a plank on your hands and on your elbows, trying to keep your body steady].” Scarles also recommends trying a side plank – certain to get your tummy trembling. HIIT HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, can burn fat and muscle – while always keeping workouts interesting. “To get stronger, HIIT works really well,” says Scarles. Most gyms offer HIIT classes, and there are plenty that are accessible online if you want to try them at home. It can be quite tricky to target specific areas in your body, with Scarles suggesting you cannot “control where you lose weight from” – so why not adopt the attitude of working out your whole body, and trying to Stomach exercises could help trim your waistline, with

it makes a huge difference to how you carry yourself.” While “you cannot spot reduce fat”, she says: “We can target certain areas with strengthening moves to appear more defined. Body fat percentage plays a big role in this. If you are lean, your muscles will appear more visible. So nutrition is key.” By having a healthy, balanced diet and focusing on waist-training exercises, you might be able to trim your midriff and feel stronger. These are some exercises you can do – without having to do hundreds of sit-ups… Planks – and their many variations Ben Scarles, trainer and studio manager at F45 Soho (f45training.co.uk/soho) explains a “plank is one of the most famous and easiest exercises you can do to improve your core strength”. If you’re bored of the regular version, he says: “Try a three-point plank [where you hold a plank, alternating between raising one leg off the ground, then the other],

Squats and deadlifts When we think about getting slimmer, we may sometimes avoid heavy weight training for fear of getting ‘bulky’, but actually, lifting weights might make it easier to tone and reduce inches in the long run. Scarles says squats and deadlifts are “exercises that work the whole body” – and you’ll keep coming back to them, “Because you get those little wins when you manage to lift more than you have before”. Lifting weights requires you to engage your core, to carry the load and stop yourself from getting injured. Hollow body hold According to Scarles, a hollow body hold is basically a plank flipped around. Lying on your back, raise your head, shoulders, arms and legs into the air using your abs – while keeping your lower back glued to the floor. The further you stretch those arms and legs and the longer you hold it for, the tougher the workout. Scarles also recommends adding a rock back and forth, to really hit your obliques.
