MARWELL WELCOMES ALAN TITCHMARSH MBE
Alan Titchmarsh MBE, paid a visit to Marwell Zoo last week for the formal presentation of its Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development.
Mr Titchmarsh attended in his capacity as Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Hampshire, along with fellow Deputy Lieutenant Simon Tufnell on Tuesday 14 March.
Presenting the award, Mr Titchmarsh said: “Over many years Marwell has demonstrated, quite clearly, its dedication to sustainability and to conservation, two aspects of our lives which have quite rightly been regarded as of prime importance in the current climate, which is something of a complex scenario at the moment.
“The need to cherish and sustain all aspects of the natural world is something very close to my heart. The world begins at our front door and the first steps into it take us, I hope, into the garden, the microcosm of nature

that’s so often overlooked and under rated while we worry about the global picture.”
The award, which was announced last year, was due to be presented in September but was unfortunately postponed due to the period of mourning after The Queen’s death.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave Marwell Wildlife the royal seal of approval in recognition of the charity’s achievements in biodiversity conservation, education and sustainability.
The award citation made particular reference to the charity’s work reintroducing scimitar-horned oryx, which had previously been classified as Extinct in the Wild, to its natural range in Tunisia.
Extensive work to harness energy from zoo poo to power the heating systems in the zoo’s largest buildings, an initiative that helped the zoo achieve carbon negative status.

CASTING A NET TO CAST POOLE’S FIRST EVER COMMUNITY PLAY
History will be made on the streets of Poole this summer as Lighthouse hosts the town’s first ever community play - and more than 100 local people are wanted to take part.
Produced by Lighthouse and created by Angel Exit Theatre, SALT is set between 1681 and the present day and shines a light on the Newfoundland trade that was at its height from the mid-17th century until the mid-19th century and saw Poole sailors bring salt cod from Newfoundland to the ports of Spain, Portugal and Italy, and return with salt, olive oil and wine.
By the end of the 17th century many Dorset families had settled in Newfoundland, economic migrants from rural and coastal poverty in search of new lives in a new land, and the play focuses on the first brave women who made the treacherous voyage to a hostile land to settle.
The themes of what it means to belong and what it means to leave your homeland are woven into a story with contemporary characters developed by playwright Stephanie Dale through community workshops that overlaps with the historical narrative.
SALT will be performed promenade-style in the Concert Hall at Lighthouse and on the streets of Poole from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 July.
NEW CHAIR OF TRUSTEES SOUGHT TO HELP LEAD NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM INTO THE FUTURE
The National Motor Museum is looking for a new chair of its board of trustees, someone with the skills and ambition to help shape and drive forward its future.
The successful volunteer will join the National Motor Museum at an exciting time, as it embarks on ambitious new redevelopment plans after celebrating its landmark 50th anniversary.
National Motor Museum Trust Chief Executive Jon Murden said: “We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic new chair of the board of trustees, to help shape and lead the direction of the museum, capital redevelopment plan and fundraising campaign. Applicants should have the profile, empathy, time, knowledge, networking and fundraising experience to lead trustee meetings and provide support and advice to Lord Montagu and our senior management team.”
NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM www.beaulieu.co.uk
He added: “We are extremely grateful for the hard work, experience, advice and leadership of our current chairman Christopher Magowan OBE, who has been a board member for over 10 years. His successor will have big shoes to fill!”
The new chair will help lead bold new plans for the National Motor Museum, as well as helping to raise significant funds needed to fully realise the museum’s ambitions over the next decade.
The role will include two to three days a month of voluntary work, both at home and on-site at Beaulieu in the New Forest, Hampshire.
For more information or to apply, please email Anna-Marie.O’Connor@beaulieu.co.uk
The closing date for applications is April 14th.
At Talbot Heath, we are situated in the middle of 6 hectares of pine woodland. This gives our pupils the opportunity to explore and connect with nature. We are blessed to have two Forest School areas. The main site where we are able to run a full Forest School programme for Years 1-6 and a smaller Forest School trail which is used for EYFS children to give them a sense of the woodland in a secure smaller area.
EYFS children are taken out weekly to explore the woods. They play, climb and make mud cakes. Their natural inquisitiveness is heightened by the discovery of a centipede hiding under a log or a robin waiting to be fed. They also begin to develop confidence - trying to walk the slackline, climbing up and down a tree by themselves. They learn through their own play, activities and stories.
Our Forest School ethos is to allow the child to develop at their own pace, learning to take on new challenges whilst supported by adults who encourage their independence.
LAUNCH OF BETTER BREATHING CLINIC BY LEWIS-MANNING
HOSPICE CAREA Breathlessness service has been launched at Wareham Hospital, hosted by Lewis-Manning’s Breathlessness team, which includes Respiratory Specialist Physiotherapist, Louise Hopley and Specialist Occupational Therapist, Anna Lambert.
Director of Clinical Services, Hayley Bonner advised, “The hospice’s expansion of the Breathlessness service is fantastic to see, we’ve had an outpouring from the community for a desperate need for this service.
“We are thrilled to be o ering this service in Wareham, as part of our current strategy is to bring hospice care ‘closer to home’. It’s fantastic that we can do exactly that for patients who really value the ease of getting to a close by clinic, but with the same expert and friendly sta that they would see in our Poole hospice.”
Louise said, “The service will be run out of Wareham hospital on a Wednesday, with regular appointments available to patients needing help and support with their lifelimiting condition.
“Breathlessness can be frightening. We help people with conditions, such as heart failure, COPD and lung cancer who struggle with breathlessness. The service is very patient centred – it is about listening to each person’s journey and their individual experience of breathlessness and how it impacts their lives. The assessment is an opportunity for me to learn about what coping strategies the individual already uses and together we look at other ways to help, such as breathing techniques, positions to ease breathlessness, and fan therapy.”
The organisation was delighted that Maggie Hardy from the Wareham Hospital Friends was in attendance of the launch, as well as NHS district nurses and clinicians from the local area, in addition to sta members and Lewis-Manning Trustee, Ian Marshall.
To access the service, patients need to be registered with a GP surgery and any healthcare professional directly link to your care can refer you to the Breathlessness service. For further information you can call: 01202 708470 and ask to speak to our Breathlessness Team or visit LewisManning’s website today.

The Great Easter Property Hunt in the Spanish sunshine!
Spring has already sprung on the Costa Blanca, and with Easter just around the corner, owning a second home in Spain is a wonderful way to enjoy the best of the Spanish lifestyle. With a seemingly never-ending winter across the UK, it is easy to see why so many dream of sunnier climes.
Now is an Eggcellent time to make that dream a reality! With the second longest coastline in Europe, Spain has always been a popular holiday destination for the British. Orihuela Costa has a remarkable 11 Blue Flag beaches, as well as 4 World Class golf courses. It is certainly a region of Spain that has something to o er everyone.
Each year, more and more of us opt for something more than just a holiday. Investing in property in Spain remains hugely popular with those from throughout Europe. O ering a wonderful average of 320 days of sunshine each year, the temptation is real.
The recent budget statement in the UK has brought some very welcome good news, including an improved exchange rate. Our currency partners at A Place in the Sun currency are o ering fantastic rates to their clients.
Vistacasas has worked with A Place in the Sun for many years. Not only are we well-placed on their hugely popular property portal, but we have also featured many times on their daytime TV show “A Place in the Sun”, where you may have seen the famous Villamartin Plaza, the location of one of our o ices. We are also delighted to be o ering their safe, secure foreign exchange services, which can save clients thousands on their currency transfers.
Easter is a wonderful time of year to visit Spain. If you are thinking of buying your very own Place in the Sun, please get in touch with Vistacasas to help plan your visit.
A PLACE IN THE SUN CURRENCY
What is A Place in the Sun Currency?
A specialist currency transfer company, dedicated to helping buyers and sellers of overseas property make their money go further when transferring funds internationally.
What are the benefits of using a currency exchange company? Do I need one at all?
You can use your bank to transfer funds overseas –but their exchange rates tend to be poor, and their service not much better. With A Place in the Sun Currency, your exchange rate will be up to 3.5% better than the bank – saving you up to £6,000 on a typical €200,000 property purchase. With a personal account manager on hand to look after you from start to finish, the process is also streamlined and e icient for our customers.
Has the 2023 Spring Budget had a positive e ect on UK foreign exchange?
Not yet! Budgets don’t tend to be too controversial (with notable recent exceptions) but the growth – or otherwise – of the economy in the coming months will have an e ect on the value of the Pound. There are also interest rate changes, unemployment, and political stability to consider – so exchange rates can be very volatile.
Why should I use A Place in the Sun Currency?
If you are buying or selling overseas property, our service is completely tailored to you. You can fix your rate in advance, to guarantee the exchange rate and therefore sterling cost for a future payment; we also know how to get your money to its destination without excessive charges or delays. And of course, our exchange rates will save you money.

Trethowans celebrates double promotion and two new appointments
Trethowans has announced a double promotion and welcomed two new associates in Dorset.
The firm has promoted Jonathan Sherman to senior associate in its corporate team, where he specialises in mergers, acquisitions and disposals, company law, employee share schemes and shareholders agreements.
Since joining Trethowans in 2019, Jonathan has been instrumental in growing the corporate team and winning new clients as well as helping to set up the firm’s sustainability committee.
Jonathan said: “I am pleased to have been promoted to the role of senior associate at such an exciting time for both the firm and the corporate team. Trethowans has been a great place to work since I joined over three years ago and I have enjoyed in particular working with colleagues and advising numerous clients on the successful sale of their business.
“I look forward to contributing to the corporate team’s continued growth in 2023 and continuing my development with the firm.”
The firm’s second promotion is in its family team, with Jacqueline Reeves promoted to associate. Jacqueline, who has worked in family law since 2005 and joined Trethowans in 2019, is known for her ability to empathise with clients, who she supports
on cases relating to divorce, financial provision, child arrangements and nonmolestation and injunction proceedings.
Jacqueline said: “The team at Trethowans has been incredibly supportive over the past four years since I joined and I’m thrilled to have been made an associate.
“My role providing clients with both practical and legal advice on how to move forward when they’re going through a divorce is greatly rewarding. Equally I really enjoy supporting junior members of the team with their development.

Celebrating blossom and spring bulbs with the National Trust
Blossom encapsulates everything that’s wonderful about spring. Breathtakingly beautiful and often sweetly scented, it lifts our spirits like nothing else; and it supports our wildlife too. Combine that with jewel-coloured tulips and swathes of bluebells and you’ve got a spring day out with the National Trust in Hampshire.
From March to May, National Trust gardens gradually fill with colour, thanks to gardeners who planted tens of thousands of bulbs last autumn. Fruit and ornamental cherry blossom transform orchards, and in nearby woods native bluebells mingle with other wildflowers –tiny violets, celandines and wood anemones.
This year, the charity is also encouraging people to celebrate spring by sharing their photos of blossom’s fleeting beauty on social media using #BlossomWatch especially during Blossom Week (24 to 30 April). Spending a little time in the company of blossom with friends and family is something everyone can do, from grandchildren to grandparents.
Here are the best National Trust places to enjoy spring colour around Hampshire...
MOTTISFONT, NEAR ROMSEY
Spring in the garden: in early April over 20 different varieties of tulip produce rich displays in Mottisfont’s walled kitchen garden and rose garden, from pastel shades to rich pinks and purples. In the little cherry orchard next to the stableyard 15 Mount Fuji cherry trees produce copious amounts of snowy blossom which releases a honey fragrance, making it a favourite with visiting bees. Wild delights pop through the long grass - naturalised narcissi, tiny pink species tulips and snakeshead fritillaries
Bluebells: in late April and early May there are some terrific opportunities for bluebell-spotting on Mottisfont’s estate walk, which actually starts in a bluebell wood – at Spearywell. Great Copse is another magical moment whist out walking.
HINTON AMPNER, NEAR BRAMDEAN
Spring in the garden: Hinton Ampner has something of a reputation on this front. 6,000 tulips in multiple varieties pack the pretty kitchen garden, and the borders around the house with a stunning mix of salmon-pink, cream, yellow, deep purple, candy striped, and orangered blooms. Bright blue anemones and chequered snakehead fritillaries litter the grass in the orchard.
From late April cherry Mount Fuji produces a mass of snow-white, scented flowers. The candy pink buds of cherry variety Kanzan follow, unfurling to reveal blowsy pink double flowers with a frilled edge; a real showstopper. There’s a beautiful example beside the pond where the branches cascade elegantly over the lawn.
Mottisfont - cherry orchard | National Trust Images, James Dobson
Ten new blossom trees planted last year throughout the garden add to the late spring display. Carefully chosen to complement former owner Ralph Dutton’s 20th-century planting choices they include the richly scented white double-flowering cherry ‘Fragrant Cloud’.
Hinton Ampner Blossom Festival, 11 March to 7 May: Hinton’s new pink deckchairs are perfect for picnics or a peaceful read in the sun – you’ll find plenty of inspiration in the second-hand bookshop nearby. There’s a giant deckchair too, for fun photos against a spring colour backdrop. Inside the house, the Butler’s Pantry has been beautifully set-dressed with silk blossom trees, hung with brown tags for visitors to write blossom-themed thoughts. Throughout the National Trust’s Blossom Watch Week (24 to 30 April) there’ll be additional activities and events at Hinton Ampner to enjoy.
Bluebells: a gentle 30 minute stroll across Hinton’s estate takes you into ancient woods, transformed into a sea of blue as scented native bluebells fringe woodland paths. This really is an amazing spectacle
THE VYNE, NEAR BASINGSTOKE [1]
Spring in the garden: at The Vyne, you can wander through the orchard to enjoy clusters of tiny cream and pink petals from the many heritage varieties of plum, pear and apple tree. This is a nice spot for a picnic on a warm spring day too. In the wild garden near the lake little ‘bird’ cherry trees produce beautiful arching sprays of almond-scented white blossom.
Bluebells: if you venture on well-worn tracks beyond the gardens at The Vyne you’ll discover beautiful beech woods. In late spring they’re awash with native bluebells. This is a good bluebell destination for families.
UPPARK, NEAR PETERSFIELD
Spring in the garden: in late spring, Uppark’s small meadow on the edge of the formal gardens begins its changing displays, as yellow rattle, crown imperials, orchids and other wildflowers appear in the long grass. It’s a lovely spot to relax in and enjoy the visiting wildlife looking for nectar supplies.
The gardeners at Uppark planted ten new blossom trees in 2022, near to the garden’s entrance, and this year we hope to see them bloom for the first time. Picnic benches placed under the tree canopies allow you to enjoy a moment of peace and tranquillity in comfort.

SANDHAM MEMORIAL CHAPEL, BURGHCLERE
Spring in the garden: further north, in the quiet village of Burghclere, you’ll find delicate wildflowers in the long grass of Sandham Memorial Chapel’s orchard, from pink ragged robin and purple snakeshead fritillary to yellow cowslip. In May the historic apple tree varieties planted here almost 100 years ago produce soft pink and white blossom. Behind the chapel two rows of young crab apples produce a pretty cloud of white blossom.

Seeing is believeing...
Why should I choose a steel-framed garden building option?
Unlike many of our competitors, our structures are fabricated in-house using square-tube steel instead of the cheaper C profiles. This means that our buildings are better able to withstand the strongest English winds and storms without creaks and structural movement. Because we fabricate the structure in-house, we also have control over the fabrication schedule, design, ease of assembly and build quality, and thus ensure that the job built ‘right first time’.
Our steel chassis structures are typically installed on a number of concrete support pads. BENEFIT: This means that there is less garden spoil produced for removal Vs fabricating a complete concrete slab base. This allows us to achieve an assembled framework, on its foundation bases, with reduced materials cost and a quicker installation time. The steel-framed structure is assembled from prefabricated section lengths and erected on site. The building can therefore be installed in restricted
access areas with fewer restrictions on the overall final size (subject to permitted development or planning constraints).
Because our steel framed structure is a completely bespoke fabrication there are none of the design or layout constraints imposed by modular systems such as SIPS panel construction. The steel framed structure
can also be designed to accommodate higher floor loadings. Enabling uses such as a home gym etc, withstanding the impact and shocks transmitted by the use of weights and equipment.
The steel structure provides a rigid framework for subsequent fit-out by traditional trades, enabling a high level of fit and finish of walls and windows. This also means that future maintenance or building amendment does not require specialist skills, material or equipment. The structural integrity of the steel frame structure means that buildings can be produced with larger, open span widths. This means, as a bespoke structure, larger glazed openings can be accommodated than other construction methods or materials.

There are a variety of different ways co-owners can own property, often with very valid reasons for individual circumstances.
However, it is vitally important that you understand the pros and cons of such decisions, especially in later life. Wills & Probate specialist Kathryn Beresford explains more.
Jointly Owned Property
When a spouse passes away, their estate may automatically pass to their surviving spouse without the need for a Grant of Representation to administer the estate. If a property is ‘jointly owned’, it is mistakenly believed that no action is necessary, but the title of ownership at the Land Registry needs to be updated and transferred into the survivor’s sole name.
Individually Owned Property
If one spouse passes away and leaves the marital home in their name to the other the process can be more complicated and the Personal Representatives will need to apply for a Grant of Representation. Also, if the sole owner of that property moves into a care home, and the other feels the property they shared has become too large for them to manage, the remaining party may not be able to sell the property, and purchase a replacement, even if they hold a Power of Attorney. Instead, there may need to be an application to the Court of Protection for approval, which takes time and money.
‘Tenants in Common’
Not only does this protect the surviving spouse’s place to live, but should they need to move into residential care, the first spouse’s share will pass to the beneficiaries when the surviving spouse dies (known as the life tenants), such as children, and not used to pay care fees.
Why? If a property has two named owners on its title, it can be difficult to sell and this may present problems, particularly if the survivor has moved into a care home and needs the money to pay for care fees.
If a couple owns a property as ‘Tenants in Common’, each party owns a share, which might be half or a specific percentage. When the first spouse dies, their share can be held in Trust for their chosen beneficiaries by creating a ‘Life Interest Trust’ in their Will, whilst the survivor has the benefit of continuing to live in the family home for life (often subject to certain conditions) if they choose to do so. On the death of the surviving spouse, the property passes to the beneficiaries.
For unmarried couples, this may affect the inheritance tax position. Although there are often good reasons for property to be owned in one person’s name or jointly, it is recommended this is kept under review and appropriate advice needs to be taken should circumstances change.

As the Hollywood sign turns 100, now is the perfect time to explore LA
Katie Wright heads stateside to find out how Tinseltown is celebrating a very special anniversary.
The barrier keeping eager fans out of arguably the most exclusive spot in Los Angeles isn’t a red velvet rope.
It’s an unassuming metal gate on the side of a dirt road, which swings open with a screech to reveal a steep slope leading down to the world-famous Hollywood sign.
Clinging to a neon orange safety rope installed for my visit, I shuffle down the gravelly path, landing a few metres behind the giant ‘H’ (just over 15m tall) and edge round to the front of the iconic landmark.
Bathed in morning sunshine and silhouetted against a cloudless California sky, the bright white letters –recently treated to their once-a-decade repainting – are beaming down on LA like a row of (slightly crooked) teeth.
“This started as an advertisement to sell homes,” says Ferris Wehbe, trustee of the Hollywood Sign Trust (hollywoodsign.org), which has organised this special visit (members of the public shouldn’t attempt the same – LAPD officers are stationed 24/7 above the sign to prevent trespassing).
Erected by a real estate company sometime in 1923 (the exact date has been lost in the sands of time), the original wooden sign said ‘Hollywoodland’ and was illuminated with bulbs like a dressing room mirror.
“It used to be lit up, and there was a guy living here, changing the light bulbs on an ongoing basis,” Wehbe continues.
While the real estate firm went out of business within a decade, Hollywood was fast becoming a mecca for moviemakers, so the ‘land’ was lopped off and a star was born. Rebuilt in metal in the 1970s, those nine pearly white letters remain Tinseltown’s most recognisable symbol.
Now Los Angeles is enjoying a year-long, citywide celebration to mark the sign’s centenary, so there’s no better time to soak up the LA sun and discover the behind-the-scenes history of Hollywood.
Here’s how culture vultures can make the most of the world’s entertainment epicentre…
Major museums
Opened at the end of 2021, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (academymuseum.org) is a movie buff’s heaven, with four floors packed with costumes, props and other memorabilia tracing the history of the film industry.
In addition to the permanent collections, current exhibition Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971 (until July) puts the spotlight on pioneering African-American entertainers and filmmakers, while in September, a new exhibit will celebrate director John Waters.
Entry is $25/£21 for adults, free for under-18s, and for an extra $15/£12.50, the Oscars Experience lets you find what it’s like to accept a coveted golden gong, smiling (or fake sobbing) as you lift the 8lb statuette. Your award-winning moment is captioned on camera then emailed over to share on social media.
Take a walk down memory lane at the Grammy Museum (grammymuseum.org), which pays tribute to hitmakers and award winners throughout the decades.
Celebrating songwriters, rock’n’roll heroes and today’s pop greats, nostalgic exhibits will give music lovers all the feels. Adults $18/£15; children aged five to 17, $12/£10; under-fives, free.
Behind the scenes tours
Also marking a centenary this year, the Warner Bros Studio Tour (wbstudiotour.com) is home to Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls, as well as the Friends fountain and couch, and is still a working studio. Opt for the last tour of the day on weekends and you might get to walk through ‘live’ sets (to use the industry lingo) when they’re not in use. Adults $69/£58; children aged five to 10, $59/£49.
More of a theme park than a studio, Universal Studios Hollywood (universalstudioshollywood.com) has sections dedicated to Jurassic Park, the Simpsons and Harry Potter (among others), plus a 60-minute studio tour which ferries you round sets – old and new – on trams, and includes three virtual rides. BELOW
New this year, Super Nintendo World is like stepping through your screen into Mario and Luigi’s technicoloured landscape.
Venture into Bowser’s Castle and you can ride a real-life version of Mario Kart, donning a VR headset so you can throw virtual shells to try and hit 100 points and defeat Team Bowser.
Queues for the biggest rides and rollercoasters can stretch to well over an hour, so it’s arguably worth splurging on the Universal Express ticket, from $199/£167. Adults from $109/£91; children aged three to nine, from $103/£86; under-threes, free.
Hollywood history
Proving that, contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a car to get around LA, the three-hour electric bike tour from Bikes and Hikes LA (bikesandhikesla.com; $98/£82 per person) takes in La La landmarks like the Hollywood Forever cemetery, where the great and the good have been laid to rest, and theatre-lined Hollywood Boulevard, as well as the more upscale residential areas.
Stopping off at the Original Farmers Market (farmersmarketla.com), be sure to sample local favourites, such as a mac and cheese-filled Nonna’s Empanada or a glazed Bob’s doughnut.
For a more sedate option, stroll with LA Walking Tours (lawalkingtours.com; $28/£23 for adults; $16/£13 for children) on the Downtown Architecture trail for a closeup look at the city’s most stunning 1920s buildings, like the muralled rotunda of the Public Library and the ornate wrought iron staircases of the Bradbury Building, as seen in sci-fi classic Blade Runner.
The route winds up at bustling Grand Central Market (grandcentralmarket.com), where you’ll find authentic Mexican pork tacos at Ana Maria, breakfast baps at Eggslut, crispy fried chicken at Lucky Bird and a whole menu of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at PBJ.LA.
Where to stay
Quickly establishing itself as a hipster hotspot, Tommie Hollywood (hyatt.com) welcomes visitors with a laidback, art-filled lobby and is perfectly positioned for exploring LA’s main attractions.
Flash your hotel keycard to skip the line (and there usually is one) waiting to head up to Desert 5 Spot, the buzzy, western-themed rooftop bar that locals love.
Conrad Los Angeles (hilton.com) sits among the skyscrapers of Downtown LA, providing five-star service to stars such as Olivia Rodrigo, who was spotted at the hotel on Grammys weekend.
Spacious rooms offer sleek décor in a calming colour palette, exceptional amenities and – if you’re lucky – a view of the Hollywood sign.
How to plan your trip
To find out more about LA, go to discoverlosangeles. com. Rooms at the Conrad Los Angeles start from $500/£413 per night. Rooms at Tommie Hollywood start from $199/£164 per night. Direct economy return flights from Heathrow to LAX with British Airways start at £392.

Dorset based ar e ural designers nds new home in Ashley Cross
After 12 years of focusing on opportunities throughout the UK, Tony Holt Design has recently settled into new o ices in Ashley Cross, Lower Parkstone.
During this time the practice has notched up over 600 self-build and homeowner projects, stretching over 47 counties in England, Scotland and Wales and more recently in Ireland and even across the Atlantic in Boston, US.
Their presence in the domestic arena took o when one of their projects, Dairy Farm Lodge, was nominated as a Grand Design award finalist for best self-build and featured as the cover story in Build It magazine, a national self-build publication. This led to a 2-year regular column in Home Building and Renovating magazine featuring how to redesign and remodel existing properties.
Projects completed by the designers range from small extensions, to major remodels and new builds. In addition to the services expected from an architectural practice, they also overlap into space planning and landscape design delivering a comprehensive and ‘joined up’ design solution for clients.
It’s an incredible feat for their small team to have secured consents with over 150 di erent local planning authorities, many in challenging and sensitive areas including green belt, AONB’s, conservation areas and even a notoriously di icult paragraph 80 (formerly paragraph 79 & 55) dwelling.
Tony Holt, Director, explains “We hope that our local presence in the Ashley Cross community will allow us to connect with local opportunities and add to our diverse portfolio of homes, continuing to create spaces for people to grow and flourish.
“We o er a comprehensive design service focused on people wanting to create something special and interesting. With 20 years of experience in the homeowner and self-build sector, covering all types of domestic projects, we are well placed to guide clients through the challenges of a building project whilst delivering real value for them and their families. The success of which, we believe lies in good preparation and embracing full exploration of design options and ideas.”

Now is the time to think about styling your outdoor space, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
There may be an unexpected chill in the air, but it’s not too soon to be thinking about a spring getaway – to your own garden.
After all, it only takes warmer-than-average temperatures to trigger thoughts of outdoor entertaining, so why not spruce up your patio space or sun deck in preparation?
Especially if you’ve thought about doing it in the past – only to discover all that lovely al fresco booty has already been stripped from the shelves.
“Think of your outdoor space like an extension of your home,” says Gabrielle Anderson, outdoor living buyer at John Lewis. And this season is all about flexible living, she adds, and buying pieces you can use inside and out.
“For example, don’t save your glass and china tableware for inside dining only, make the most of your favourite pieces and mix and match them to create a colourful and eclectic dining table.”
Ways to up your al fresco game
Outdoor cushions are great for adding an extra layer of comfort and pop of colour to dining outdoors, Anderson suggests: “They are easily packed and stored away when not in use.”
Here’s how to style your space for springtime socials…

Get set for a mind-altering journey at this surreal London hotel
The Mandrake in London demonstrates how a hotel can double as a creative gallery space, says Sarah Marshall.
There’s no finer furnishing to grace a grand entrance than a chandelier. Whether it’s an antique piece crafted from the finest Murano glass, or a Gothic wrought iron fitting flickering with candles, a hotel’s choice of lighting reveals a great deal about your stay.
It takes me some time to work out exactly what’s hanging from the lobby of the Mandrake Hotel in London’s Fitzrovia. Ebony tassels tumble from several concentric crowns of wax lanterns, but there’s something a little more unusual about the material – it’s made from human hair.
Surreal and delightfully perplexing, the installation by hairdresser and artist Robert Masciave uses 200m of real-life manes to decorate The Haunted Chandelier, made by jewellery designer Lara Bohinc. It’s one of many pieces commissioned by the hotel’s art-loving owner Rami Fustok, who has fashioned the 33-room property into a hotel, restaurant, wellness space and gallery.
Inspired by the medicinal properties of ‘the mandrake’ (a Mediterranean plant belonging to the nightshade family, supposedly resembling the human form and historically used in rituals), rooms are named after legendary healing and hallucinogenic plants – but the artworks alone are enough to spin me into a mindaltering state.
An antelope dressed in a peacock’s body appears to leap above the bar, while an extravagant ostrich with a snakeskin neck parades it’s feathers in the dining area. There are also works by big names such as Salvador Dali, Jeff Koons and Marc Chagall scattered throughout the labyrinthine property. Each piece has its own message to convey, making it very clear this is more than just eccentric interior design.
The idea a hotel can also double as an art space makes sense: away from our everyday stresses, it’s much easier to appreciate statement-making sculptures and thoughtprovoking paintings. Equally, art has the power to soothe and relax – essential for a successful weekend away.
In fact, every element of the hotel is a creation.
In the YOPO restaurant, chef George Scott-Toft has prepared a South American and European inspired menu with an emphasis on spice and flavour. Standout dishes include a seabass with charred avocado and roasted pineapple, and a side of grilled Sicilian aubergine served with puffed rice, and a miso made with 28 ingredients.
Next door, in the Waeska bar, a cocktail menu is based on ethnobotany, with drinks made using herbs and botanicals. Fans of spicy infusions will enjoy the Mangosteen, made with chipotle agave and jalapeno vinegar on a tequila base.
And while a courtyard decorated with ferns and passion flowers is a winner in warmer months, seductive scents fill the corridors year-round. Carefully concocted by award-winning British perfumer Azzi Glasser, jasmine and fig are two key ingredients used in the secret potion said to heighten sense and arouse sexual desire.
Aphrodisiacs aside, though, it’s very easy to fall in love with a hotel built on creativity and beauty – both inside and out.

FLEXITARIAN; OR JUST A NORMAL DIET?
Flexitarian is a word which has only recently appeared in our day-to-day vocabulary but one which seems to be trending in the ever-developing world of people’s dietary needs…
But what does it really mean?
The Oxford dictionary definition is “A person who has a primarily vegetarian diet but occasionally eats meat and fish”. I don’t know about you but this to me appears to be describing what we would call a good old fashioned “balanced diet”, but we have somehow warranted the need to coin a title for it. Why so?
In a market where the extreme is becoming more popular, and restaurants are becoming more and more niche in their menus, it’s hard to keep up with what, how much and how far operators should be going to cater for all everyone’s requirements. It’s a veritable minefield of can and can’t eat, and the worry is that too little or too much might alienate or offend certain foodie types. Which of course no restauranteur wants to do.
I like the idea of this Flexitarian creature, a casual vegetarian who looks for the benefits of a sustainable yet well rounded diet where nothing it off limits but everything is viewed in moderation. It feels inclusive and surely a win win for all those involved?
Why not look to become inclusive all year round, and this Flexitarian ethos is what we’re going to focus on in 2022. Living life in balance sounds like a mantra that we could happily stick to.

LANDLORDS SWITCHING TO USING LETTING AGENTS
A recent survey by USwitch found 63% of private landlords are turning to letting agents due to the current complexity of self-managing their properties.
The top 3 concerns Landlords in the survey cited were;
• False information on applications forms
• Repairs taking up too much time
• Being up to date with forever changing legislations
Using reputable agencies is so important when making this leap and I am proud to say Move On are one of the top agents in the area for being widely known as the experts in lettings.
From the moment an application is received, a process of due diligence is put in place to make sure the background checks tell us the proposed tenant has passed our strategic checks. But we don’t stop there! Our regular property visits during a tenancy and yearly appraisals, ensure our landlords are fully compliant with the latest up to date changes within the forever changing legislations as well as conducting rental reviews, which means our clients can be confident their individual property is receiving individual attention!

Flashes of gold in decos and furnishings can bring just the right dose of dazzle, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
Want to get your summer glow on and channel some glitzy brilliance around the home? Gold-tone accents feel sophisticated and fresh – and work surprisingly well alongside simple furnishings as well as traditional pieces.
Ultra-versatile, these glimmering flashes can complement elegant design features and Scandi schemes, and make everything look that much lovelier.
As Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy trend expert, puts it: “A fun way to introduce a summer glow into your home is to incorporate shimmering metallics – like gold, brass, and copper – that embrace warmth and brighten up a room. From bold metallic wall art to dazzling statement lighting, metallic decor is the perfect option to liven up a summer room, while also adding a touch of glamour.”
Ways to give your home style a touch of luxe
Not sure about going big with the glitz?
For a more subtle take on the trend, she suggests incorporating neutral pieces with smaller metallic details – like gold-handled mugs, trinket dishes with gold edges, etc –into your existing decor.
Likewise, plush cushions, cocktail glasses and exotic bookends can really revitalise a space…

With its art deco style, marble shelves and brass frame, this one ticks all the stylistic boxes.

Lightbulb moment
Great lighting is not merely functional but, when designed correctly, improves the feel and atmosphere of your home. So when renovating a property you should think about lighting right from the start: How will you use the various spaces, what functional lights are needed for tasks and what sort of ambience do you want to create for different times of the day?
You may decide to invest in a statement lighting feature but it’s often the subtle light fittings that creates the mood; they come into their own particularly in the evening.
With the increasing popularity of openplan spaces flexibility is key. Layering your lighting on separate circuits will allow you functionality and the ability to create the feel you want in each space, whether relaxing, entertaining or reading.
touch lights are IP rated battery powered and can be table or wall mounted.
Far from being an “add on” element of your home design, great lighting will enhance the look and feel of the space and ensure maximum relaxation and enjoyment for you and your guests. Partners in Design work with clients to design and install beautifully lit schemes; why not get in touch with us and see how we can light up your home.
You can create interest with layers of light and contrasts of light levels. Accent lights that highlight art, cabinet interiors, walls or window dressings add a luxe design element to the room. The use of cool white bulbs will create a modern, crisp look while warm white will soften space with a golden glow.

Table lamps provide the most flexibility, allowing you to have a lot of fun and enhance your décor. The Melt by Tom Dixon is one such table lamp which looks great on or off – an imperfect, organic and naturalistic lighting object which is as much a work of art as a light fitting! Similarly, the impressive “Vertigo” pendant from Petite Fritture will create a sense of awe in a hall or over a dining table. Don’t forget lighting in the garden when you are entertaining too.

Recycling never looked so good!
Remoulding the Past, Reshaping the Future, Rebuilding the Environment!
With the warmer days ahead of us, the garden is a great area of the home to focus your attention on, as during the spring and summer months it can become an extension of our living space.
At Reformed Plastics we specialise in creating attractive and hard-wearing outdoor furniture, decking, fencing and gate solutions, planters (plus more), all made from 100% recycled HDPE plastic waste, previously destined for UK landfill or the ocean!
Our products are a great investment because they are much more durable and lower maintenance than their wooden counterparts, so will last over 50 years and save any future expense. Being made from recycled plastic the furniture doesn’t absorb moisture like wood does, therefore it doesn’t rot and will last infinitely longer.
Not only will it give your garden the uplift it might need for the summer but will help you be able to enjoy it all year-round. The important factor to consider is whether your surfaces are safe to use in the everchanging weather conditions we face. Our decking is anti-slip, so you can feel safe walking around whatever the weather, plus furniture can be simply wiped down so you can still enjoy a cup of tea in your gardens even after a rain shower!
ABOUT US
Reformed Plastics are an experienced and friendly Family business who are a leading UK manufacturer and supplier of sustainable products made from 100% Recycled Plastic. We’ve been providing a unique & personal service, delivering direct to the Domestic and Commercial sector Nationwide since the turn of the century. From concept to completion, our experienced and dedicated team based at our Parley workshop make it their mission, for you to get the most out of your outdoor space for the best price possible!
Due to the ever increasing importance to recycle and protect the environment, the plastic used is recycled in the UK and is the perfect maintenance free alternative to wood. Our aims are to help rebuild the environment by utilising a commodity which people would otherwise just throw away, turning what most would consider rubbish into a valuable product for everybody.
We offer our products at extremely competitive prices, and with a market leading product guarantee of up to 25 years! We’re also delighted to say that sales of our products have saved the equivalent of over 110 million plastic milk bottles from entering UK landfill to date.
“Reformed Plastics did a fantastic job on our decking last summer! It has required no upkeep and looks as good today as the day it was installed.”
Recycled plastic outdoor furniture is the perfect choice, both practically and aesthetically, as the material looks like wood but can last outside all year round without the need for annual maintenance. It is extremely strong and durable –guaranteed never to rot or splinter. We also build wheelchair friendly and easy access furniture for complete inclusivity.
Not only does it look great but it has helped many of our customers achieve their environmental goals.
PERFECT FOR THE PLAYGROUND
Children love spending time in the playground, so it is important to know the equipment and furniture they are using is safe and durable. We have been involved in a number of projects custom making products for schools where they not only meet this criteria, putting teachers and parents minds at ease, but they are also bright and fun so that the children enjoy them too, adding and extra burst of colour to the playground.
Plus with the importance of climate change our products are a great way of getting the children involved and teaching future generations about the importance of sustainable products and how they can be brought into every day life.
MAXIMISE YOUR COMMERCIAL SPACE
Businesses have to put a lot of consideration into commercial spaces and how to make them not only a comfortable social environment, but also safe for customers.
One of the main benefits of investing in recycled plastic furniture for a business is how easy it is to clean and maintain. It can be regularly hosed or wiped down with disinfectant after each use, giving you and your customers peace of mind. It is also a great investment because unlike wooden furniture, it will not rot, split or splinter, so once purchased it will last forever saving you from the need to replace it a few years down the line.
Plus all our furniture comes delivered fully assembled, saving you valuable time hassle and money!
FINANCIAL BENEFITS
Achieving value for money is a key driver for any purchasing decision. Although some recycled products have a greater up-front cost, their longevity and durability make them a much more cost-effective and sustainable option over the long term.
“David and the team were always on hand to answer any questions we had. Reformed Plastics have reformed our outside seating area, making it look like new all year round.”
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why are recycled plastic products different?
Plastic lumber is the perfect alternative to anything that has ever needed maintaining.
Plastic lumber can be cut with a regular saw, drilled or screwed into and routed as easily as wood.
Will not rot, split or splinter
• Will not need painting or staining
• Resistant to all weather and salt water
• Resistant to chemicals and vandalism
• Resistant to insects and bacteria
• Anti-slip decking
• Lasts for over 50 years
WOOD VS PLASTIC
“Not only was delivery prompt and easy, the Reformed Plastics driver was incredibly helpful. The product is great – 9 years on and it still looks brand new. Better yet, it’s recycled!”
How strong is it?
It is extremely solid and strong being able to withstand stress levels of well over 10x that of traditional timber. It is heavy, durable, virtually indestructible and will not need to be replaced. In short, it is worry free!
Does it need to be cleaned?
Our products only need to be cleaned after a spillage. The collection of airborne dirt is inevitable and we would recommend a simple spray-down with a hose or brush over every so often to ensure that your purchase is kept in the best condition.
Is there a colour choice?
Our standard colours are black or brown, however we do produce a range of products in a variety of bright colours including purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, grey and beige! This removes the need for painting and staining. So whatever colour is required... just ask!

Create your own private garden sanctuary with Broadview
Feeling the sun on your face, the breeze in your hair, the grass under your feet… spending a warm summer day out in your garden is one of life’s most rewarding pleasures.
At Broadview Shading Solutions, we believe that your garden should be your sanctuary. Our modern pergolas provide the perfect private retreat for you to enjoy the great outdoors in comfort and style.
We are the South’s premier suppliers and installers of high-quality pergola systems from Brustor, the industry leader in garden shading solutions. Stunningly designed and fully customisable, they add a modern focal point to your garden while protecting you from the harshest sun and rain.
Here are just some of our favourite projects from over the past few years to give you inspiration for creating an impressive garden space of your own!
B200 PERGOLA INSTALLATION OVERLOOKING PARKSTONE GOLF CLUB
A neglected patch in our client’s garden overlooked a picturesque pond and the luscious greens of Parkstone Golf Club. Wanting to transform the look and function of this space without spoiling the stunning views, a high-end pergola was the ideal choice.
We recommended the Brustor B200 louvred roof aluminium pergola with continentalstyle sliding glass walls. We chose it for its stylish and freestanding structure, which could be enclosed during adverse weather by closing the tilting roof slats and frameless sliding glass panels. In the summer, it can be opened for the perfect al-fresco experience, offering the best of both worlds.
B600S PERGOLA INSTALLATION IN BARTON-ON-SEA
After building a brand-new patio on the back of their property, our client approached us with the idea of creating a beautiful, shaded area to host friends and family. They eventually chose the B600S pergola for its integrated screen system and compactly stacked S-shaped louvre.
To cover an eight-seater table and reclining chairs, we recommended a 6m x 4m freestanding structure with an Anthracite Grey frame and white louvres. The louvred system is fully automated and retractable - it allows sunlight to spill in when open and can be rotated for adjustable sun exposure when closed.
To enjoy the pergola all year-round, our client chose to upgrade with colourmatched infra-red heaters, LED lighting strips, and four integrated screens.
B150XL PERGOLA INSTALLATION IN BRANKSOME PARK
Having just finished landscaping their property’s exterior, our client wanted a pergola that would provide shade to their patio area while blending in seamlessly with the garden design.
We recommended and installed the B150XL pergola, a model that doesn’t compromise on style or modern functionality. Its custombuilt 4.5m x 5.11m structure and 21cm rotating louvres can be operated by remote control or mobile phone, making it easy to control the amount of light and shade.
Added extras include two Sand Grey ZIP screens, an integrated rain sensor, cladding, LED lighting strips, and two electric heaters.
TERRACE COVER INSTALLATION IN CANFORD CLIFFS
A new homeowner in Canford Cliffs loved the stunning views offered by their uncovered terrace but found that it was unusable during cold and wet days. They approached us to help them transform it into a flexible outdoor dining area that could be enjoyed all year round.
After visiting the property and discussing their requirements, we suggested a custompainted outdoor structure to sit neatly in the alcove of the building and stretch to the edges of the patio. The bespoke patio cover included integrated overhead LED lighting, LED uplighters, Bromic Platinum outdoor heaters, and two concealed sliding screens for ease of use.
Our client is now able to use their terrace in total comfort, even on the chilliest winter nights. They were so thrilled with the outcome that they decided to install a custom outdoor kitchen and barbeque area alongside it!
Broadview have been the South’s leading shading specialists for over 50 years, offering a stunning range of garden pergolas and awnings. MOTORING NEWS
Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
ROAD TEST: 2023 – YEAR OF THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE?
Over the last year my test car list included numerous electric vehicles, whether selfcharging, plug-in hybrid or full electric. It’s not surprising as manufacturers up the pace of their EV production with many announcing fully electric ranges within a couple of years.
One of the main problems with EVs has been, and in many cases remains, the higher initial purchase price when compared to equivalent specification models with combustion power. Part of this can be explained by the fact that any new technology, and despite electric vehicles having been around for many more years than people imagine it is new technology, takes time to embed itself and allow demand to reduce prices.
With the advent of new EVs such as the MG4, the technology is getting ever more affordable and mileage range is increasing.
Still not enough to match combustion powered equivalents though. The biggest issue is infrastructure, or rather the lack of it. In the UK it is frankly awful with few fast chargers and even the moderately fast 50kw units so few that you invariably end up having an excessive wait.
Although EV charging will never be as quick as fuelling a combustion car, more superfast chargers would reduce the time significantly enough to make it convenient. That, along with pricing, is the main issue because convenience will lead to much greater adoption of EVs. Vehicle
manufacturers have got their act together remarkably quickly, government now needs to do the same.
There have been many EVs on my driveway that have appealed, but the two that have personally appealed most come from BMW’s stable. The MINI electric remains the most fun you can have in a battery powered car. It possesses all the elements of a traditional hot hatch in terms of acceleration and handling. Priced from £29k it’s only real drawback is the 145 mile range. When you consider the MINI has been around for over 20 years, it’s a credit to BMW that it remains so competitive thanks to their careful evolution of the brand.
The second is at the other end of the scale in all respects; the BMW iX. It’s a real style statement that divides opinion, even the interior is more like a concept model. With prices starting from a shade under £70k it needs to be good and it delivers. With a more useable, range of 253 miles the larger battery models will in theory take you to nearly 370 miles. If you’re thinking EV then whatever your budget the options are growing.

IS THIS THE WORLD’S
RAREST UPCYCLED ELECTRIC VEHICLE? A 1961 BENTLEY S2 CONTINENTAL
Lunaz Design has unveiled what it bills as the rarest classic car ever to be transformed to full electric power.
Dating from 1961, this specific Bentley S2 Continental is one of only four examples built. Today, now completely restored and reimagined, it’s equipped with Lunaz’s inhouse designed electric powertrain.
This specific Continental was built in 1961. In period, a small number of luxury car bodies were still being produced by independent coachbuilders to the customer’s specification, on a ‘rolling chassis’. According to the build sheets, the first owner initially commissioned a four-door body from leading London coachbuilder James Young; but he evidently had a change of heart at the last minute, since research shows the car has only ever existed in its present twodoor form.
In 1967, the car changed hands for the first time. Over the decades that followed, it would reside with various owners as far afield as Germany and Japan before
returning to the UK. This Bentley Continental is the rarest S2 variant and today is one of only a handful left in the world.
All Bentley S2 variants were powered by the then-new ‘L’ Series 6.2-litre V8 engine.
The electrification process starts with a detailed inspection and assessment to determine the chassis, powertrain, and suspension configurations. Lunaz Design’s engineers use 3D scanning to create detailed Computer Aided Design (CAD) models as the basis for any renovation and reconstruction work required.
The car body is then stripped down to a bare metal shell and returned to as-new condition using traditional coachbuilding and restoration techniques. The internal combustion engine and its associated
systems, lubricants and other fluids are carefully removed and reclaimed, then replaced with Lunaz’s proprietary fullyelectric powertrain. The modular design is developed entirely in-house.
Other vital systems, including brakes, steering, suspension and electrics, are all modernised to bring them into line with current safety standards.
The now fully electric Bentley is equipped with a clean-air 400 bhp powertrain, producing 530 lb-ft of torque. 0-62 mph is achieved in 6.9 seconds. To ensure handling capability suspension is uprated to a fully adjustable coil-spring suspension with a lever arm damper. Likewise, its brakes, which also incorporate a battery regeneration system, have been upgraded.
In its new incarnation, the Bentley retains its luxurious character; but in keeping with its zero-emission powertrain and Lunaz Design’s culture of upcycling, the interior now incorporates a much higher proportion of sustainable materials than the original.
ROAD TEST: ISUZU D-MAX – RUGGED WORKHORSE AND URBAN TREND SETTER
At a point not that long ago you would only have ever associated pick-up trucks with builders, tradesmen and farmers. They would have been of a specification and look that made utilitarian seem sumptuous. How things have changed! Most now look rather smart, don’t look like they’ve spent much time in the local building supplies yard or farm and can cut it on the style stakes with the best SUVs.
Manufacturers realised that they were missing a trick and a pick-up with good levels of standard equipment and a variety of optional hard tops and accessories can appeal to a whole new range of potential buyers. Add in the possibility of all-wheeldrive and the chance to carry 5 people, as well as a decent load bay and towing ability, and the appeal is obvious.
Isuzu have long been a ‘go to’ manufacturer for those wanting a comfortable, rugged and stylish pick-up. Good standard
equipment with excellent accessory packs and options means the Isuzu D-Max range can cover every scenario from building site to trendy wine bar. The range is essentially split into two halves, the business lineup and the V-Cross and Artic models and there are single, extended and double cab options. Prices start at £23,149 and peak at £47,999.
Power comes from a 4-cylicinder 1.9-ltre turbo diesel that propels the Isuzu well for such a large vehicle. With an empty load bay the D-Max does bounce around
on rougher surfaces but things are better with a weight in the rear. For such a large vehicle the D-Max is an easy drive and can be piloted through bends with much more aplomb than might be expected. Bouncy unladen weight ride apart the other issue with the D-Max is noise. Pick-ups are never the most refined but the D-Max does get rather vocal under acceleration, not helped one suspects by the modest engine size.
The build quality and equipment in the D-Max is excellent, and betters some cars, with an interior that lacks the ‘bolton iPad’ style touchscreen in favour of a neat built-in screen. Soft-touch materials are also evident and although some of the touchscreen functions look a little dated they all work very smoothly. If you’re into your pick-up trucks the Isuzu looks the part too. If you’re looking for something a bit different on the rugged transport front then the D-Max can be a surprisingly sensible choice.

ROAD TEST: FORD CONTINUES TO PUT ON THE STYLE WITH PUMA
MOTORING NEWS
Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
ROAD TEST: 2023 – YEAR OF THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE?
Over the last year my test car list included numerous electric vehicles, whether selfcharging, plug-in hybrid or full electric. It’s not surprising as manufacturers up the pace of their EV production with many announcing fully electric ranges within a couple of years.
Even after it has been on our roads for three years Ford’s Puma still draws admiring comments and still has stand out looks in a motoring world where much seems the same on the style front. When I had my first Puma test car I was parked in a supermarket car park and a rather trendy young couple walked past.. “That’s the new Puma,” said he. “Nice, isn’t it”, said she. A few minutes later they both purred past in their Porsche SUV. If you think a lot of people buy a car because they like the looks-and then argue they bought it for more common sense reasons then it’s probably the former. The Puma, even in these difficult times, delivers healthy sales for Ford. Underneath the smart body sits a lot of Fiesta, including engine
With the advent of new EVs such as the MG4, the technology is getting ever more affordable and mileage range is increasing.
and gear box. But the bits you can see are all bespoke to Puma and stretch further in every dimension than the Fiesta donor.
Ford has a hard won reputation to maintain for building affordable cars that bring a smile to their driver’s face. The Puma more than lives up to the accolade, with the sort of eagerness to tackle a corner that the taller body might warn against. Positive steering and a pretty snappy gear change add to the fun. The more sporting ST-Line and ST look enhanced in all the right places with a sports body kit. However, they also have sports suspension so it’s worth checking
Vehicle
manufacturers have got their act together remarkably quickly, government now needs to do the same.
the ride is to your liking before making your final choice, even the non-sporting models ride and handle extremely well.
It’s a real style statement that divides opinion, even interior is more like a concept model. With prices starting from a shade under £70k it needs to be good and it delivers. With a more useable, range of 253 miles the larger battery models will in theory take you to nearly 370 miles. If you’re thinking EV then whatever your budget the options are growing.
Prices start at £24,920 for a Puma that comes with a 1.0-litre 125PS engine and shares all the attributes of dearer cars. The Pumas also add mild hybrid to the mix for improved green credentials. Every Puma gets a cockpit that looks modern, works well but arguably lacks the surface shine of some rivals. There’s plenty of room up front and just about enough in the back, before we reach the clever bit in the boot. Lift the boot floor and you discover what Ford calls a MegaBox, an 80 litres waterproof compartment, complete with drain plug for dirty wellies and the like. The goodies count is impressive, with even the lead-in Puma featuring power fold heated door mirrors, auto lights, high beam assist, auto wipers, navigation, intelligent cruise, climate, Car Play and Android Auto, quick-clear heated screen, five different drive modes and 17” alloys.
ROAD TEST: MAZDA 3 - A COMPETITIVE AND ATTRACTIVE MOTORING PACKAGE
Two quick glances–inside and out-might well be enough to put this Mazda high on your list of desirable medium sized hatchbacks. The Mazda 3 line-up offers both hatchback and saloon priced from £23,265 and £26,265 respectively. All engine options are based on a 2.0-litre, 4 cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol unit with mild hybrid assistance and mated to either a manual or automatic transmission.
Six trim levels, five in the saloon models, offer an excellent standard features list and in the GT Sport Tech on my driveway the list is extremely comprehensive. Powered and heated door mirrors, auto dimming mirrors, adaptive LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors with 360-degree camera, auto lights and wipers, power sunroof, privacy glass, dual zone climate, head-up display, heated front seats and steering wheel, intelligent cruise control and a comprehensive sound system that incorporates navigation and Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
My test model was finished in Soul Red, a particularly head-turning colour and for the right reasons even if it does add £870 to the final bill. However, this latest Mazda 3, priced at £30,465, has more than colour on its side.
The GT Sport Tech has a clever 2.0-litre petrol engine that comes with what Mazda calls spark controlled compression ignition which mixes conventional petrol engine technology with a touch of diesel cleverness to produce better economy and emissions. Developing 186PS and mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox the car returns 53.3 mpg. There is also mild hybrid assistance courtesy of a 24-volt battery to further improve economy, performance and help reduce emissions.
The rest of the car is more typically old school Mazda, which is nearly all a positive. You will find a cockpit that’s well put together but veers (correctly) on the side of simpler usability, with switches and knobs rather than taking the full touch screen route that looks sexy but is simply annoying to use. Add the sharp styling package and the Mazda makes for a competitive and attractive motoring package.
Healthy living for your diesel engine
Neil Hansler explains the facts and benefits of the fantastic TerraClean service
Diesel engines will unfortunately build up carbon deposits in combustion chambers, exhaust ports, turbos and catalytic converters as a result of lower combustion temperatures. For carbon to burn, a combustion temperature in excess of 550 deg C has to be achieved.
Modern Diesel engines are fitted with Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems (EGR), which reduces the combustion temperature to around 350 degrees C. This reduced temperature lowers the amount of emitted Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) from the vehicles exhaust into the atmosphere.
Although this is good for air quality, it is not so good for the inside of your engine!
The TerraClean diesel process starts by isolating the vehicles fuel system, the TerraClean machine is then connected to the engines fuel lines and the engine is run on the highly refined fuel contained within the Terraclean machine. This fuel is rich in additives, it cleans both pre and post combustion, a quality unique to Terraclean.
The process removes gums, varnishes and carbon deposits from the injectors, improving injector response times, reducing knock and restores spray patterns, resulting in an improved atomisation, a cleaner burn and lower Hydrocarbons.
Once the fuel has burnt, additives that have turned into gases oxygenate the
combustion chambers, turbo, cat and DPF, reacting with the carbon deposits within them causing an exothermic reaction turning carbon into carbon dioxide. Thereafter, they exit the exhaust as carbon dioxide and water.
The end result is improved engine efficiency, leading to improvements in performance, mpg and emissions.
Prices start from only £110 for a standard fuel service and we have availability this week at either your home or workplace.
Results vary by make, model, age and mileage of vehicle.

Food writer Skye McAlpine on cooking to spread love
Katie Wright finds out about Skye McAlpine’s passion for sharing food, and why she thinks Venice is magical
Skye McAlpine was studying classics at Oxford University when she started getting serious about cooking.
“My parents cooked a lot, so I always felt comfortable in the kitchen, but it was that transition from being asked to peel a potato or chop something, to the whole production of creating a meal,” says the food writer.
“I was always planning supper – who I was going to have over, or what I was going to cook – when I probably should have been more focused on my studies.”
Born in London, she moved to Venice with her parents (her father is the late businessman and politician Lord McAlpine) when she was six, enrolling in a local school and picking up Italian within a year.
Fast forward to Freshers Week at Oxford. After a chance encounter in the college bar, the then-18-year-old began dating the man who would become her husband, Anthony Santospirito – and that wasn’t her only burgeoning passion at the time.
“That’s when my love affair with cookbooks really started,” says McAlpine, who now splits her time between Italy and the UK. “I bought a couple to learn to cook, and just loved reading them. Then I started collecting them, and spent a lot of time cooking.”
Completing undergraduate and master’s degrees in classics, she was partway
through a PhD, focusing on English translations of 17th- and 18th-century Latin love poetry, when she became pregnant. And it was while on maternity leave that McAlpine started a food blog.
“By the time I’d completed my PhD a year-and-a-half later, the blog had gained momentum, and I’d been commissioned to write some freelance pieces. I also had my first cookbook commissioned.”
Now the proud author of three titles, the 38-year-old hatched the idea for her latest book, A Table Full Of Love, during lockdown in 2020.
“I spent a lot of time thinking about why we cook, and wondering what makes it feel like a worthwhile investment of time, when time is such a precious commodity.
“We cook for people – I do anyway – and that’s why it matters. You make a plate of pasta, then you sit down and eat it – it’s the rituals around it.”
Inspired by her academic work, she originally wanted to title the chapters using Greek or Roman words for the different types of love, such as eros (romantic love) or philia (familial love). However, she had to rethink that approach: “When I was tackling mania, which is intense stalker-type love, it felt quite forced. So, I thought, ‘I can’t do that’.”
Instead, she settled on five themes to illustrate why we cook: comfort, seduce, nourish, spoil and cocoon.
“The first chapter is about friendship,” she explains, which is where you’ll find recipes for gooey macaroni cheese, warming chicken soup, and her mum’s saffron and lemon risotto.
“It’s this idea of cooking to lift someone’s spirits, whether that’s because they’ve had a tragedy, or they’re having a rough day, or you just want to show them you care.”
In the seduce section, McAlpine shares the recipe for Anthony’s Special Pancakes, made by her husband in the early days of their courtship.
“Some couples have songs, but we have recipes or dishes,” she says. “I remember being blown away by how delicious Anthony’s pancakes were.”
The couple’s sons – Aeneas, 10, and Achille, three – are pictured in the nourish chapter, helping mum make ‘polpette’ – ricotta balls. And the spoil theme is all about the joy of edible gifts – for both the recipient and the giver.
“When there’s nothing you can do to help someone, you can make a phone call, you can bake a tray of brownies, or you can make them a cup of tea,” McAlpine says. “Being able to do something that
visibly makes someone you care about happy is a precious thing.”
The final chapter, cocoon, celebrates selflove with dishes perfectly portioned for solo dining, such as roast poussin with lemon potatoes, AKA “the joy of a chicken lunch, but for one”.
Featuring sumptuous photos taken in the author’s magnificent Venetian apartment, the book is beautiful to behold, but McAlpine wants to stress the dishes aren’t as elaborate as her decor.
“There are so many shortcuts and a lot of simple recipes. It’s not about cooking something amazing or fancy or impressive, it’s about doing something, no matter how small, because sometimes these things can bring so much pleasure.”
The Venetian cookery influence is obvious, with the plethora of vibrant pasta and creamy risotto recipes.
“It was a magical place to grow up,” she says of the city famous for crisscrossing canals, gondola rides and incredible architecture. “It’s a bit of a fairy tale city. It’s deeply impractical, but it kind of lives in its own time capsule.”
After more than three decades as a part time resident, McAlpine has watched Venice strain under the weight of millions of visitors.
“The volume of tourists is high, and I’d say it has been for the past 15 years. That has had a big impact on the fabric of the city, but it’s still magical. It’s a magic, magic city.”
A Table Full Of Love by Skye McAlpine is published by Bloomsbury, £26. Photography by Skye McAlpine. Available now.

Pollo alla Pizzaiola
INGREDIENTS
2tbsp olive oil
4 chicken breasts
460ml tomato sauce
2-3tbsp capers
Leaves from a small bunch of basil, chopped
200g mozzarella cheese, sliced
Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper
INGREDIENTS
325g sheet of ready-rolled all-butter puff pastry
1 egg, lightly beaten
250g mascarpone
2tbsp finely grated Parmesan cheese
400g thin stems of bright pink rhubarb
1tbsp caster sugar
130g Cheddar cheese, grated
Small bunch of thyme
Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper
SERVES 4
1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan that has a lid; you want a pan that is large enough to fit the four chicken breasts. Brown the meat on both sides over a medium heat, then take the pan off the heat. Take the breasts out of the pan, set on a plate, and season generously with salt and pepper.
2. Put the tomato sauce in the frying pan while the pan is still off the heat, so the difference in temperature between sauce and hot pan doesn’t cause the sauce to spit, then put the pan back over the heat to warm through. Add the capers and basil. When the tomato begins to bubble, nestle the seasoned chicken in the pan.
3. Cook the chicken in the pan over a medium heat for seven to eight minutes, turning the breasts every now and then, until cooked through.
4. Lay a slice or two of mozzarella over each piece of chicken and cover the pan with its lid, or, if you don’t have a lid big enough, you can cover the pan with foil. Cook for a further minute or two, until the cheese is melted. Serve immediately.
Rhubarb and Cheddar tart
SERVES 4-6
1. Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6. Line a baking tray with baking parchment and unroll the sheet of pastry on to the tray. Use a sharp knife to score a two to threecentimetre border around the edge, then prick all over the centre part with a fork.
2. Brush the pastry edge with the egg, then line with baking parchment and baking beans. Blind-bake in the oven for 10 minutes, until dry to the touch and lightly golden at the edges. Take out of the oven and leave to cool for 10 minutes or so.
3. In a small bowl, combine the mascarpone with the Parmesan and season generously with salt and pepper. Spoon the mascarpone over the middle of the tart, and spread it out as evenly as you can. If the pastry is puffed up in the middle, don’t worry, just press it down gently with your hands and spoon the mascarpone on top.
4. Cut the rhubarb into long-ish pieces, roughly 16 centimetres long, and arrange them snugly, side by side like soldiers, over the mascarpone. Sprinkle the sugar over the rhubarb, then top with the grated Cheddar.
5. Lastly, scatter over a few thyme leaves.
6. Set in the oven to bake for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the rhubarb is tender. Serve warm.
White chocolate and pistachio tortinie SERVES
INGREDIENTS
100g salted butter, plus more for the ramekins
100g white chocolate, finely chopped
60g caster sugar
2 eggs
2tbsp (level) plain flour
2tsp (heaped) pistachio butter, shopbought pistachio cream, or chocolatehazelnut spread, such as Nutella
Icing sugar, to dust (optional)
Finely chopped pistachios, to serve (optional)
2
1. Butter two 10-centimetre ramekins, making sure to liberally coat the bases.
2. Combine the butter, white chocolate and sugar in a small saucepan and set over a low heat to melt. Stir regularly to stop the chocolate from catching, and take the pan off the heat as soon as it is melted.
3. In a small bowl, lightly beat the eggs with a fork. Add the eggs to the melted chocolate and stir vigorously until well combined. Now add the flour to the chocolate and stir vigorously until you have a smooth, chocolatey cream.
4. Pour a quarter of the mixture into each of the prepared ramekins. Spoon a dollop of pistachio butter, pistachio cream or chocolate spread into the middle of each, then pour over the remaining white chocolate mix, dividing it equally between each ramekin so the pistachio or chocolate is completely covered. Cover and set in the freezer for a couple of hours (longer if you like).
5. When you are ready to serve, heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6.
6. Bake the tortini straight from the freezer, in the middle of the oven, for 25 minutes, until lightly golden on top and slightly risen in the middle. They should feel firm to the touch. Dust with icing sugar and/or a scattering of pistachios, if you like, before serving while still warm.
